Yay! Happy birthday to me

Turning 23 years old today the 18th, oh mah gosh. time flies. Hmm, other unimportant facts.. Oh yes. I reached 13k pageviews on Friday the 13th. I still owe somebody a dbz Kiriban.

So you might have noticed that I almost haven't made any art in the last 4 or 5 months. But I'm planning on starting again. I've made something the other day but I can feel I'm still rusty (still have to colour that thing).

Okay, so I've noticed that people here on dA and other places on the internets take commisions. Sometimes they draw characters owned by say, Marvel or DC for people. Those people then pay them. With monees and honey. But mostly monees.

So here is my questions:
[1a]Isn't it copyright infringement if you make money out of somebody elses character?
[1b]Could somebody please explain to me why?
[1c]Would it still be okay if I say for example drew a perdy Wonderwoman picture and print out 50 posters and sell them?

[2]And then to the people who have already done commisions here. Do you just send the person the high resolution image or do you guys actually send the original sketch(or printed picture) to your client via Snailmail?

[3]Oh yes and one more thing. Is there even any alternatives to international payment to Paypal or is it the only way pretty much?

Hello, I'm back again. Today. Vacations sucked chunks before you ask. Would've been back a week ago but things didn't go according to plan. Got stuck in a small town with family. Nephews, etc. Now I know why don't go home that often.

My V-day was pretty chilled. I grabbed a beer or three with one of my good friends, who is also single. And later that day I got to hang out with my awesome friend ~DarthVaderDuck and his girlfriend. We played poker until the early morning hours with a few other friends.

So why do/did I hate it so much you ask. Beside the fact that couples in love just have to be everywhere and rub it in my single face there is an even bigger reason why I do not like this day very much.

Why do you need a stupid holiday to show your love for somebody? It's just to make money out of you people. Yes you that keeps on going on about love and such. If you have ever worked at any kind of store that sells Valentines day stuff you'll know what I'm talking about. It sickens me. Little children from some asian country that we probably haven't even heard of most likely might have made that teddy bear that's lying on your pillow right now. I don't like capitalism very much.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Here's an idea! Why don't you make your Valentines day cards yourself. You people are artists, aren't you? And why not cook a romantic dinner for your loved one instead of taking him/her to some fancy shmancy restaurant. I'm sure that at least half of you guys and girls appreciates it more if it has so much effort in it.

If you did cook your dates dinner and made her/him a card then I'm really proud of you. Really really proud of you. In fact I would give you a hug or a handshake for doing so.

But heck. I'm beginning to sound like a hippy or something. I hoped you all enjoyed your singles awareness day. To all my fellow single friends. Hmm, there really isn't anything interesting that I can tell you about my holiday. I went to the beach, went fishing, drinking and got sunburn and that's about as interesting as it gets. Oh yes, and I worked at a stationary shop and learned one or two things that might come in usefull in the future.

This is my final year at university and I'm both excited and uneasy about the fact that I'm soon going to have to get a job and my own place to stay. There lies a mountain of work in front of me that I have to finish this year because I don't plan on staying longer than necessary.

I apologise for not commenting on your works. 480 Deviations is just waayy too many to go through for me. But I must say I'm proud on a lot of you guys and gals. You have improved so much in the last few months, it's astounding. Wait, replace "proud" with "jealous".

Oh look now, an update
I had to register for my studies this year and got some not-so-nice news. I'm not going to be able to take all of my subjects this year and finish my studies on time. Once I got over the fact that I have at least two years of university ahead of me, I had to decide which subjects I want to take this year and which subjects to take next year.

Basicly I planned on firstly taking all of the shitty subjects this year and getting it out of the way. Next year I would take all the fun subjects and finish it with a smile. Something like finishing my veggies and then enjoying my pudding as a reward.

Buuuut due to stupid technicallities(you know, can't take this subject with that one. Can't take that one without finishing this one first. Blah blah, same bullshit and whatnot) it seems that i'll have to mix my veggies and my pudding into one big messy heap and devide it into two new heaps.

If I didn't make any sense right now don't worry, it wasn't very important anyway. As you can see, I'm somewhat pissed off at the moment but I only have myself to blame for not working harder so it seems that shit naturally happens unless you do something about it in the great race that we call life.

I'm so unbelievably glad this year is almost over. It was one bad sandwich filled with poop that I had to force down and try not to puke. Hmm, where do I begin? I've had depression for a while but I think I'm over it now. I've been in a neutral to bad mood most of the year and all of my work has been mediocre according to my standards. Absolutely nothing that I'm proud of.

Thinking about it, there isn't really much that I want to share about the bad things of this year with you guys. Sorry. Either that or I'm not in the mood for writing anything at the moment. I haven't lost any relatives or friends this year so I guess it could've been worse.

I haven't accomplished one new years resolution this year. I think I'll only make one important one next year and try to stick to it. Have you guys accomplished any of yours? I'm sorry to all the people who I promised to do collaborations with this year. I'm going to have to call it off for now until I have sorted my own crap out.

Guts? Yes. Time? Not really.

Would you do Meth if it was legalized?
Isn't meth that drug that fucks you up REALLY badly and makes your face look like a zombie because you lose parts of your nose? Oh yeah, and there's no way to get off the stuff? I think things should be legal, illegal and super-illegal. If they even catch you with meth you should get shot.

Abortion. For, or against?
It depends on the situation. If raped then I say you have the choice to decide if you want to raise the baby. This is still a difficult one. The child didn't choose to get in there. But if you just were fooling around, it's unfair to the baby. Most governments also allows abortion in cases like inbreeding, mental disorders and that kind of stuff. I think it's not wrong in every situation.

Would the United States fall with a woman president?
As far as I know Nieu Zeland(erg, how do you spell that place again?) or some other island had one for a while and they did pretty well as far as I know.

Do you believe in the death penalty?
Murder and Rape(and some other cases) for sure. People always goes on about "what about his rights? He didn't know what he was doing." But what about the victim?

I've decided that I HAVE TO GET A WACOM INTUOS ASAP. And it won't just come knocking on my door asking me to use and abuse it. I have to work for it. So I have advertised to do some commision artworks for anybody on our campus who would be interested. Sorry guys, but for now it's just for people who I can meet who I'll do a commision for. I'm too lazy to get me one of those paypal thingys and besides, I doubt that anybody would commision me if they can choose from the awesome artists here on dA. This is a very smart plan and I can't figure out why I haven't tried it earlier. #1 It will give me some extra experience and practise. #2 Now I'm forced to do decent art works and not the half-ass stuff I sometimes submit to dA. My name is at stake. #3 Money. #4 It fills up my portfolio. #5 Less spare time. Wait.

about tutorials
I've found one or two awesome inking tutorials on the internets. One of the reasons why I have to gets me a Wacom. I'll post the links later. Please remind me if you're interested in inking.

about colabs and plans for the holiday
After exams(which ends the 16th for me) I'm going home for about four weeks. I'll be doing a few colabs. I have to ink one of *Blazingwire's works and do a inked sketch for =blO0dLuSt. I also have to color one of *luketaylor's works. I also have to start working on my Super-BIG-Super-AWESOME-Super-SECRET-Colab with *damouse. There is something else but I can't remember right now.

---THE KING OF PIXELFIST TOURNAMENT---

We will have a tournament in which contestants will 'battle' against each other(we still will have to decide if there will be multiple rounds) using a small animation program called EasyToon. The idea started in this journal. Easytoon is a small program that only uses black and white pixels and frames(like all animation) which can then be saved into .GIF files. This program is small but quite useful if you learn how to use it. It's recommended if you are new to animation and want to learn more.

The main idea of this tournament however is to teach and learn from one another. I don't yet have prizes and stuff for the people who improve the most. Everybody's a winner just for entering (Is there anybody who wants to donate prizes perhaps?)

You can see a perfect example of what to expect from this tournament here or here. This is also sort of how it started because of ~Dojang and ~Quaro

~slyshand has suggested that we use THIS VERSION VERSION 1.9.5. Because he is the master and knows the most we will be using the version (VERSION 1.9.5) that he uses. Sorry for the inconvenience if you have already downloaded another version.

Once you've got easytoon ~animationinfo(run by ~AkiraShimada) has made a tutorial for starters of easytoon here. Take a look at the rest of his gallery to learn more.

If you still want to see what can be done with this program I highly recommend taking a gander at s gallerys

Dojang and Quaro would usually work at size=450x260,time interval=7. This will be the standard for this tournament

Ah, it's good to be back. This holiday has been really boring. Didn't do much as far as art goes. I'll submit a few works a little bit later.

I've been back for almost a week now but I had problems getting my pc to connect to the internet. I had to go to the library every time I wanted to connect.

about maggots
I finally came back from home after 5 hours on the road. But when I unlocked my flat's front door it was like walking into a crime scene, or at least something that smelled like it.

With the power failures that SA had been having my fridge also paid the price. All the meat and everything else in there were rotten. Smelled like a corpse. We're still trying to get the smell out. Wish me luck.

about new year's resolutions
I don't really have one. Hmmmmmm.......*thinks really long and hard*....err...to be a better artist I guess, and to perhaps try and get into shape.

Life is good But not for me

I am now a part of the Graphic design team of our Campus newspaper Wapad. I help with the adds, illustrations, posters, etc.

This will mean ILLUSTRATIONS!!!

Unfortunately, this will also mean even less time on DeviantArt.

The first edition that I'm working with is the Aardklop edition. It's an Art's festival where people come to buy t-shirts, listen to music, consume large quantities of alcohol and a few other things not worth mentioning here (If you're planning on getting knackered @ Aardklop, please obtain a Wapad before you do. It's going to be handed out for free and stuff.)

I don't think that I will have much of a Pee-Aye-Arrr-Tee-Why though because we have a few major assignments that has to be finished just days after this short(like, 10 days or so) vacation when Aardklop will be taking place . Life's a bitch

In other news we've started to learn a bit about webdesign in HTML, Dreamweaver, etc. All the fancy buttons and gizmos are making my head spin. But I'll get the hang of it, eventually.

Oooh, Printdesign and Webdesign.

There are also a few other things that I'm very excited about, but I'll keep it to myself for now .

1. What sort of artist would you consider yourself to be?
The one that doesn't know where he is going.

2. How long have you been doing art?
My parents once told me that even in kindergarden I would spend an above-avarage time drawing with crayons. The other kids would play outside and i would still be indoors drawing (The earlyest picture that I can actually remember drawing was Bart Simpson). So yeah, I pretty much started from the moment I could hold a crayon in my hand.

3. What is the biggest strength of your art?
I strife for perfection (even if I'm a long way from it). I've always criticised my work right after i drew it. I would always try to learn from my, and other peoples work and see how it can be improved. You can see the result in my work.

4. What is the one thing you would like to improve upon?
This may come as a surprise but I actually want to start working more abstract. One should constantly challenge yourself to improve your style and even create more than one style.

5. Are you a professional?
Nope.

6. Would you like to be a professional?
Of coarse.

7. Which artist has influenced your art the most?
Too many to mention. But let's try: DBZ was possibly the first anime that I have ever watched in my entire life. I was totally overwhelmed by this new style of drawing. At first I taped the episodes and then later paused them and made quick sketches. (But I really suggest buying a book about anatomy and drawing other stuff ) . I'm trying to move away from the anime these days. That's just one faze of my life. I watched a lot of cartoons when I was younger and I guess I just developed a talent to actually see and remember the linework (does that make sense?). I can't really think of any particular artist that I'm following. It is said after all that an artist's style is influenced in one way or another by everything he or she has ever experienced in their life. (Oh, and one more thing. This is to all the young artists out there who is only starting. Don't ever just trace another picture directly. You won't learn anything that way. Rather put it next to your paper and try to redraw it. You'll learn a whole lot more )

8. What is your strongest medium?
Ah, the pen is mightier than the sword, but a pencil can still write in space .

9. Is there a medium you would like to learn how to use (or use better)?
Oil paint, Photoshop, Illustrator and ink. And other mediums prolly also.

10. How do you handle critiques of your work?
Very well as long as it's usefull. I am prolly my biggest critique.

11. Do you give critiques to other artists?
Only if I'm sure about what I'm saying. I don't want to be a nuisance. But people are welcome to ask.

12. What is your favourite subject matter for your art?
"Total. F***ing. Randomness" would be a good answer .

Our vacation will be about three or four weeks long and I don't have internet at home so no new stuff or comments from me then.

I've browsed around and seen a few tuts I want to try out the vacation to improve my skillz.(If you know of a good tutorial that you think I could use, please post a link in this journal. Thank you)

I am also planning on finishing [link] . Although I will have to redraw the picture because I don't like the linework on it. So stick around kids.

I will be here for another week or so so if there is something you have to let me know tell me.

There is also a collaboration on the way but my lips are sealed.

PS: Just thought of something. You know the tab that goes with this text in your journal, the watching, reading, eating etc. thing. Well you know what, the folks from DA should add a 'smelling' option too. Just think about it for a sec: 'smelling:Freshly baked cookies, smelling:The sweet aroma of coffee, smelling:fart'.

It's almost Winter. Ah, I love the Winter. There's something about the cold that just makes me feel alive. Can't explain it. I should have been born in another country. This South African Climate is really not for me. Although I guess someone that lived in a colder region would feel diffirent about it.

My Photoshop skills are improving and I shall be submitting some soon. Some of my older work are also being redone.

I've taken a closer look at my work and realised that to improve I'll have to re-invent my style. I'll have to go back to the basics of drawing to do this. An Artist fades into the background if he or she doesn't try to constantly re-invent himself/herself.

I always drew shapes simply by feeling. I would almost never draw guidelines(eg. ellipses and contour lines) and fill in detail as I go along. I've noticed that most proffesional artists still does it. Somebody once told me that I have a very steady hand. That may be true but I can still improve by making rough shapes before I draw. There's always room for improvement.

We're so busy these days so I don't really get time to browse around DA. So I am still not watching any new people. But the holidays is around the corner and then I shall have some time to make new submissions. I will be scarce for a few weeks but feel free to drop a comment or two

I can't really think of anything worth mentioning here. I'm currently studying Graphic design. Oh yes, we started working with Illustrator the other day(Check out my Slipknot wallpaper). Very nifty program. I will be submitting more in the future hopefully.
