Hey guys, as you may have noticed, I've been writing a series of news articles to help you improve with your artwork and motivation. I want to continue to write articles periodically, so there's where I want your help.

So far I have two articles posted:

Challenging Yourself to Become a Better Artist

Becoming a better artist means knowing how to challenge yourself, and maintaining a positive attitude even when nothing seems to be working out the way you want it to. This article explores how to push yourself to do things you never thought you could do.

Establishing a Process for Better Art

In this article I'll talk about establishing a process of working on art that will help you turn out much better work without as much struggling or confusion.

As I mentioned, I want to continue writing about things relevant to helping you guys push your art to the next level. What I want from you is ideas on what else you'd like to hear about, or things you need help with.

Take a look at the two articles I have posted already, and that should give you an idea of the type of stuff I'm looking for. I'm not looking for ideas about specific tutorials or anything like that, I want to help with more 'big picture' stuff first.

Even if I don't take a specific idea from you, the ideas you give might lead me to another overall concept that encompasses what you're looking for, or something that might address the root of a common problem I'm seeing.

Anyways, thanks a lot guys, looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

My new personal project is going to be titled Hayling. I'm going with my gut on that title, given that it's tightly knit into the story. It'll become more apparent later, so I want to close discussion on it for now.

I'm aiming for it to be a complex narrative and hope to tell it in a unique format, probably some sort of hybrid of a graphic novel/comic/art book, as well as straight up illustrations with clues and hints to the storyline and characters.

I don't want to reveal too much right away, because the progression is going to be fairly complex and involved with twists and reveals, but the general concept is this:

A group of complete strangers find themselves in a precarious position, trapped inside the walls of an enormous facility, in some unknown, yet familiar, location. With strange marks on their bodies and no memory of how they got there, they work together and traverse the compound looking for an exit. But they soon begin to realize there's much more to their plight than they initially thought. Each room presents not only more questions, but deadly challenges and startling discoveries of things that shouldn't even exist.

But as hours turn into days, the group becomes more desperate--their paranoia almost unmanageable. They struggle with the increasing feeling that whoever or whatever is orchestrating this rat maze has much bigger plans for them. As they continue forward, hanging onto their last shreds of hope, the unexplainable occurrences and bizarre happenings eventually lead them to one question that should give them all the answers they need. What is Hayling?

And that's just Part One of at least 3 parts, it gets really crazy. I understand the initial concept might sound a little cliched, but once you see some of the artwork I plan for it, you'll see that it's quite unique. Most of the really interesting and meaty stuff I can't reveal without destroying plot details, but that'll all come later!

I hope to get some conceptual pieces done for it soon to give you guys more of a visual cue for the story. And don't worry, it'll have plenty of sci-fi elements.

Anyway, I hope this whets your appetite somewhat. The project is still in the very early stages, but I'm writing up a storm for it and I'm really excited.

Hey guys, I'm actually really excited to announce something. Well, not so much announce as it is tell you of some little developments that I'm giddy about.

Some of you might remember my personal project Vermillion Flux that never really went anywhere other than a quick conceptual painting and a few journals.

The poster, journals, and info within them I always thought were a cool sort of teaser/viral thing, so I was a bit bummed when I decided to discontinue the project. I had a lot of cool ideas for it, but I just wasn't into it anymore. You can still check some of it out if you want by clicking the things below.

Anyway, I got into thinking about a new personal project. It's not Vermillion Flux, but some of the ideas from it are indirectly related to my new project, and hopefully this new idea is much more badass.

Unfortunately, there isn't a ton I can say about it right now, because I'm still working out details... and to be honest, there's a lot that needs to be kept secret to avoid spoiling anything.

What to expect...

In my mind I keep thinking of Lost and Fringe (JJ Abrams much?). Not that it'll be anything like those two shows, but I plan for it to be a treasure trove of secrets, reveals, and mind fucks, with the viewer/reader constantly questioning what's going on and why.

I plan for it to be not only action packed, but sort of a psychological experience and perhaps philosophical to a degree, with a lot of back story and mythos to be revealed.

Format

Not entirely sure of the format I'll be doing it in yet, but I'm thinking maybe some sort of cool hybrid. I'd like portions to be graphic novel in nature, but then I'd also like it to have full on digital illustrations, as well as short 'novel' sections where there's a bit more reading.

If any of you know of Doug Chiang's Robota, which is amazing btw, think of that with perhaps more of a graphic novel/comic element to it.

Anyway, I look forward to revealing more about it down the line when I get it more worked out. I know I haven't given you much to work with, but I hope you guys are at least a little interested! If it gets off the ground, I plan on putting into it all the love and care that you've seen `adonihs putting into LMS.

Take care!

I went to an entertainment conference at my school today, from 9am-4pm where we had people from Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and Pandemic Studios come and talk to us about their industry experiences and give us advice.

Needless to say, it was quite an afternoon.

There's so much to tell for those of you who are interested, funny little stories and bits of advice, so I guess I'll break it down into the individual speakers with a little table of contents:

Jay Shuster - Pixar
Don Drum - Pixar
Alex Jaeger - Industrial Light & Magic
Chris Hunt - Pandemic Studios
John Bevelheimer - Sony Pictures Imageworks

Jay Shuster - Pixar

I'll talk about each of them briefly, but the real highlight of the show was definitely Jay Shuster, who's an Art Director at Pixar, so I'm going to go ahead and talk about him first.

Before I get into what he's done, I'd really like to say what I thought was great about Jay was his sense of humor about everything, including his ability to poke fun industry big wigs and his previous projects, as well his overall attitude about his work, art, and life.

So starting from the beginning, he attended my school, the College for Creative Studies, for a few years and he's responsible for a number of designs on Star Wars Episode I. He was relatively vocal on his dislike of the prequel movies and his disappointment that was Episode I. He shared this with us through a number of goofy anecdotes and slides.

One of the things that sticks out in my mind is when he was talking about prequels and 're-mastered' movies, like the original Star Wars films that were redone, and he kept using the "NOOOO!" picture of Vader from Episode III.

I also thought it hilarious when he discussed how a little kid came up to him one time after giving a speech and asked him when he was going to apologize for Episode I. Jay then went on describing how he wanted to roundhouse kick the kid in the head. He also joked around about how the only communication he had with Lucas was through stamps that he'd mark on work that was shown to him. That's not the first time I've heard of Lucas doing it, but it was funny to Jay when he moved onto Pixar and they also used a stamp approval system from time to time, rofl.

Anyway, Jay Shuster is responsible for a lot of the design in the first Cars movie. After that he moved onto WALL-E, where he personally did the design on both WALL-E and Eve. It was amazing to see dozens, if not hundreds of drawings and sketches that he went through to get to the final design. Many of them were really cool, others looked like WALL-E on steroids.

He discussed the problems associated with the design process, especially things like fitting everything on WALL-E, being able to have it pack in to a square nicely, while still having it make sense. Apparently between WALL-E and Eve, the design process took about a year and a half total.

I had a chance to talk to him after the presentations and Q&A about their pipeline and getting your foot in the door. Obviously it's difficult, and he told me that there are really only a few new hires each year there, but part of the reasoning for that is that Pixar pretty much hires for life. Meaning that when they get you onboard, they expect you to be there for the long haul. That's fantastic for employees, especially in this industry, but makes it so much harder to be a part of the magic that is Pixar.

He also showed us all sorts of great photos of their campus, neat things they do, classes they have, their ridiculous offices filled with toys, and one hall of offices that looks like a shanty town.

But what was most important about his speech was talking about rising up from school, through the ranks, to become an art director as he is now. It's incredibly inspiring, and it's great to hear of other people who started out just like us making it big in the industry and realizing their dreams.

A great bit of advice he gave is whatever the director asks for, give them WAY more. You have to work your ass off to get noticed and become a well respected key player, and they'll always appreciate the work...

So it looks like I'll be back in school this fall semester. I had decided to drop my classes for another semester based on both financial reasons and the freelance work I've been getting, but apparently I was a day late for a full refund on tuition.

As it turns out, I can take 2 of my 5 classes for CHEAPER than it'd be to drop all 5. Crazy, I know. The problem is I've already missed two weeks of classes, but I've already talked to one instructor who's cool about it.

Looks like I'll be in an Advanced Illustration Techniques class, and likely either a Matte Painting class or Invented Environments. Really not that bad of a deal, gives me time to hone my skills and learn while continuing to do freelance work.

Not to mentioned it structures my time better. I think we all know how easy it is to get lazy when you don't have a daily set schedule. Luckily this'll help keep me busy and on top of things even more than before.

In any case, I'm actually kind of excited I was unable to drop classes entirely. I get to pick up two of the classes I was relatively excited for, and there's also something about working with other artists in a learning environment that you can't really get elsewhere.

Take care everyone, catch up with you again soon!

P.S. I haven't forgotten about the contest, just need to find some spare time to get things together still.

I feel dumb for not having known about this earlier, but I just discovered a fantastic resource for artists by clicking through the options in the Firefox search bar.

Basically, one of the options aside from Google and Yahoo and stuff like that is to search for Creative Commons content. The site that it uses is CreativeCommons.org, but it searches through sites like Google Images and Flickr to find images that are legal for you to use in your work.

This is especially useful for anyone doing matte painting who need to find landscapes and other things easily to be able to modify or paint into. Also useful for photo manipulators, or if you want some good reference to use without having to worry about getting in trouble for copying something.

It is not considering stealing or ripping as long as you modify it and don't try and lay claim to the original work. There may be other stipulations such as making sure to give the original owner/creator credit, and also labeling your work as Creative Commons to some extent, but it's not really a big deal.

You can do Creative Commons searches through Google Images and Flickr by simply using the advance settings, but just using the CreativeCommons.org search automatically does it for you and saves you a bunch of steps and time.

Anyway, check it out, I'm sure a lot of you will have uses for it.

Hey guys, I just bought a new monitor today to replace my primary, but it was less than satisfactory, so I'll be returning it. I wanted to get input from those of you out there who are tech savvy or have professional grade monitors and do professional grade work.

I was hoping to spend as little as possible for a new monitor, but let's say I don't wanna spend more that $500 at the absolute most. That's the top of my price range and I'd personally like to avoid going that high if possible. I'm looking for roughly a 24" monitor, give or take, depending on the quality.

So, if you can, hit me with any suggestions you might have. Newegg.com is a good resource, and I've had good experience with them, so links to products there are definitely appreciated.

Just remember, I don't want to settle for a "good" display. It needs to stand up to professional work, and can't just be something suitable for gaming and videos. But on the flip side of that, I'll likely be purchasing a PS3 soon, so I'd like it to work well with that as well.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it, I hope to hear from you.

Let me start by saying I won't give out any spoilers. This is a movie best seen fresh, but read on if you wanna know how incredibly badass it is.

Basically, this movie is my favorite film of the year so far... by a landslide. I can't describe how refreshing it is to see something so original, executed so well and without any big studio interference.

Neill Blomkamp's style is visceral and real, but also profoundly cinematic and epic. Combining the sci-fi genre with such a gritty, documentary style approach is something hard not to love, at least in the hands of such talent.

Let me say that whatever you think you know based on the trailers, you're going to be surprised. It isn't misrepresented at all, but there's so much more to it, ideas, concepts, and 'twists' that are going to having you leaving the theatre going, "Fuck, that was cool! And so was this, and oh man, what about that!"

The story and concept is set up in the beginning very well, and about 20 minutes in is when things really take off, and the documentary/interview style is ditched for a more cinematic, albeit still real and gritty, approach.

My jaw hit the floor more than once, and I found myself involuntarily emitting loud guttural sounds at a few key parts that are going to shock your pants off. The movie has a ton of, "Holy shit, did that just happen?" moments. You'll be surprised at just how graphic the violence is. Let's just say the alien weaponry doesn't look to incapacitate you as much as it aims to completely decommission you... permanently.

And even better, the movie is funny. Not comedy style funny, it's more of a dark, sadistic type of humor, but I promise you'll get at least a few good laughs out of moments that are of the, "that guy just got hit by a car, but did you see how funny his flip was" nature.

Also, the CG is insane. I expect nothing less from WETA. The aliens, the ship, the mech, the weaponry, the effects. They're all incredibly convincing and lead you to believe this world is real, and not just some fictional fabrication. The way it's shot also lends itself to the realism, when a lot of it has a homemade look, but it has these elaborate special effects integrated.

This film is an absolute must see, no doubt about it. You'll walk away extremely satisfied, and if you're anything like me, you'll be ready to see it a couple more times before it leaves theatres and we have to wait for a DVD release. The big screen is definitely the way to see it, though.

Seriously, wow.
<sub>
P.S. Please try to avoid spoilers in the comments, so as not to ruin anything for anyone. Thanks!

In case you're wondering what's been going on in my life lately, read on! I've got some cool things to share, like a movie I just worked on, hopefully news soon about that contest I've been meaning to do, as well as more Livestream painting/tutorial stuff.

Matte!

First of all, I just finished up some matte painting work on a movie, which was really fun to do. It was for a film called High School, which stars Adrien Brody, Colin Hanks, and Michael Chiklis. The scene I helped with looks pretty sweet. The synopsis is:

"A random drug test coincides with a high school valedictorian's first hit of pot. With his college scholarship at stake, he enlists the school's biggest stoner to help nullify the results of the screening - by getting the entire student body high."

Sounds like it could be pretty funny, I'll keep you guys updated when there's a trailer out for it. The company I did the work for is great, awesome people there. And thanks Danny, I owe you.

Livestream!

I'm hoping to do some more Livestreaming soon on my channel. I've got a bunch of work coming up, so a texturing tutorial might be a little while down the road, but I might be able to broadcast some of it. I'll definitely let you guys know.

Contest

I didn't forget about the contest I talked about either, I just need to get the free time to put everything together. I still have all your ideas floating around from that journal, so I'll keep you updated. Like I said, I'm gonna try to make it fair to as many people as possible of different abilities and types of work.

District 9

Seeing it tomorrow! So psyched. Everyone go check it out, gonna be one of the best films of the year. It has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes as of me typing this. If you don't know anything about it yet, check out the trailer here. Looks AMAZING.

More Paintings

Like I mentioned, I've got a lot of freelance work under my belt right now, but I should be able to show some of it. I'm itching to work on some personal stuff soon, and I think I should get a break coming up in a couple weeks. I might push through that matte painting from the Livestream just to get something done. It's relaxing and was turning out pretty cool.

Reformat

I'm going to be reformatting my computer tonight or early tomorrow it seems. Shouldn't take too long, I don't have too much stuff to reinstall and transfer back on. It's more of an inconvenience than anything. But again, thanks for all the help with Photoshop, it's a bummer I couldn't get any of it to work.

Anyway, take care everyone! Hope all is well.

Adobe wasn't much help, but I won't blame that on them, only so much you can do over the phone.

I managed to borrow a friend's laptop for the next day or so in order to finish up a project I have a deadline for, but I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do a reformat this weekend.

I already backed up my important files, so it's not a huge deal, just a rather sizable inconvenience.

Again, than you all so much for going out of your way to look things up for me and try to help out. I apologize for not responding to everyone, but I read everything I tried most of the suggestions that were relevant.

I've spent the last 20 hours trying to fix this, but I'm throwing in the towel. I'm not even frustrated anymore, I've come to terms with it. Sometimes life throws us curve balls and tests us, so I'm keeping my cool.

Take care everyone, thanks for being awesome.

Hey guys I have a MAJOR issue right now with Photoshop and I need to get it resolved ASAP.

Basically, I'm working and it suddenly freezes and dies on me. Then, it won't re-open, no matter what I do. I uninstall, then reinstall, and still same problem. Other Adobe products will open, but NOT Photoshop.

I have an official license that I tried installing with the Production Premium Suite, but it's giving me the SAME issues, I cannot get Photoshop 32-bit or 64-bit to even go to the splash screen. I double click the icon, and nothing happens.

I went through Adobe help, they sent me through a long page of troubleshooting here, none of which helped. I need to get this up and running as soon as possible, and if you have ANY suggestions, please let me know.

I'm tempted to use a system restore point, but I want to avoid that as long as possible. And a reformat of Windows Vista is out of the question right now.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hey guys, this may or may not be an issue you're aware of, but it's a rather sizable one that really needs some attention brought to it, so please read on.

Basically, dA has a major bug right now, and has had it to varying degrees for at least 4 months that I'm aware of. It's more noticeable to more popular deviants, just based on the sheer numbers of watchers, but there's chance it's happening to everyone else too.

According to my poll, some other polls and journals I've seen, and discussions I've had, about 1/3 of deviants often DO NOT get notified of updates by certain artists. It may not be consistent with deviants though, and perhaps you could say that 1/3 of the time, deviants don't get a submission in their message center from certain artists.

This seems to apply occasionally to polls and journals as well, but I'm uncertain to what extent. Regardless, you can see what kind of issue this is. You watch someone to see their new art, right? So what's the point if the site isn't notifying you.

Me and others have filed help desk reports already, but still no solution. I know things like this take time, but I wanted to help push it along.

So I'm asking you guys a favor that's going to help both you and me out, as well as others. Basically look at the following two things:

If you watch an artist, and haven't noticed updates in a while, but you see a bunch of new art or journals on their page, or...

...you've noticed less traffic on your work, and have confirmed it with your watchers that they aren't receiving some of your work in their inbox...

Then please file a help desk report by clicking here and detailing the issue. It shouldn't take but a moment.

This has been happening for months, as I've said, and it's frustrating to say the least. I know both me and `adonihs are reluctant to post work right now due to the fact that a very sizable chunk of you won't even get to see it.

Reporting the problem to the help desk will help them see how widespread it is, and hopefully instill a sense of urgency in tracking the problem down and fixing it.

Here's the link again to file your report. Like I said, if you personally notice these problems, and aren't just taking my word for it, take a minute and file a report so we can all enjoy each others art again.

Thanks guys, catch you soon!

Hey guys, I'm sort of toying with a new concept right now that I think could be a lot of fun and bring a whole new level of immersion into digital painting.

For future works, I was thinking that it'd be really cool upload Flash enhanced versions, primarily for environment based work. There are a whole slew of really neat things I could do with something like that:

Enhanced lighting effects.

Ambient sounds or music.

Enhanced nature elements, like animated clouds, birds, trees, bugs, water, etc.

Maybe animated ships or other man made elements.

Interactive elements, like buttons, or lights, or doors.

Ways to reveal other picture elements.

Ability to tell a small story through a few interactive elements.

Maybe hiding easter eggs or connections to other paintings/stories.

The list goes on, there are all sorts of really cool possibilities with it. I just think that even a few small things like some ambient noises, clouds drifting, or water dripping, or some subtle lighting shifts would really add to the overall immersion factor of something otherworldly.

The idea isn't wholly original, I've seen Flash on sites before that create a sort of interactive experience with an environment. But my goal isn't to make it some complex interactive experience, I just want to add a little bit of flare and edge to it, something that helps represent to you how I see something in my head even better than just a traditional still image.

Let me know what you guys think of the idea. And if you have any insight on how I could utilize Flash and/or Adobe After Effects to achieve these ideas, feel free to chat me up and give me some tips.

Also, any other ideas on neat things that could be done with this sort of thing, definitely toss those in my direction. And, if you know of any existing examples of ideas like this one, please link me so I can see what others have done and how. Anything you come up with is much appreciated!

Thanks everyone, talk to you soon!

I've been having some amazing dreams lately, they've been playing out like movies that I'd really wanna see, that cater to my exact interests. And best of all, I tend to remember them for at least a day or two, and longer if I manage to remind myself of it or write it down or sketch it.

It's due to a lot of things I'm sure, the art I've been looking at, the movies I've been watching, the music I've been listening to (especially while sleeping), and things I see in the everyday world that manage to inspire me in unexpected ways.

I find that my waking hours inspire my dreams, and my dreams inspire art, stories, and other things. My mind is my own personal Hollywood sometimes, and I absolutely love it.

Very often, the coolest ideas come to me right as I'm falling asleep, when I'm on the cusp of being awake, and being completely knocked out. Moments like that, I either have to wake myself enough to try and remember it, focus intently on it with the hopes of dreaming about it more, or get up and sketch it really quick.

Unfortunately, I have just enough paid work to prevent me from getting to the personal pieces I'd love to be doing. Luckily I quit my job at Gamestop, so really all I have to do now is focus on my art, and nothing more.

Anyway, life is good. I have amazing friends, especially `adonihs who never ceases to inspire me, push me, and make me smile. I also have an incredible girlfriend, =CaelestisTrucido, whom I love very much, and I also have all of you. People who support me and drive me to keep doing my best, the people who I love to entertain and impress, the people who without, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Again, life is good. But I digress.

What I want to know is what is your relationship with your dreams? Do you have a sort of artistic symbiosis like I do? Or is it more of a strained effort? Do you manage to remember them? Do they reflect your real world interests, or are they a hodgepodge of ideas? Let me know!

Also, if you have Twitter, hit me up! [link]

So I finally quit my job. I'd been thinking about it for a while, but I put in my two weeks, and now I only have a few days left. GameStop just isn't worth the effort anymore, and it's too trying on my patience. Also, what use is 4 hours a week at $8/hr? I can make more in a week with art than I make there in 3 months there if I'm lucky.

Every day I worked, I felt like someone was testing me... testing me to see if I could resist from splitting a child's cranium open with a Halo action figurine from across the store as I watch them destroying the place while their parents look at them and smile while chatting happily away on their cell phone about the wine Brenda served at her dinner party the week before, and how their kid is spoiled as they buy them 4 games and a new PS3 to replace the old one they traded in 2 weeks prior because they wanted a 360 instead, but suddenly realized the PS3 is better....
</run on sentence>

*deep breath*

... that pretty much sums up GameStop.

Obviously retail is not my calling. Anyone who's worked it knows what a horrendous bitch it is. People treat you like you're the dregs of society, like you have no worth or purpose other than to bend over backwards for them. I'm leaving it behind for greener pastures.

So, goodbye GameStop. We had some good times, but I'm ready to move on. I hope you find it in you to treat your employees well someday, and you learn how to make a policy that doesn't make working for you an irritating, logistical nightmare.

Good night, and good luck.
- George Clooney
</sup>

I have a rather important question to ask you guys. A lot of you won't be able to help much, because the experience and knowledge might not be there yet, but I'm hoping some of you can help shed some light and help me out with a crucial decision.

I'm battling with schooling.

Basically, I've completed two years of entertainment illustration college courses, and I'm set to go back in the fall. But there are a number of things I'm conflicted over.

First off, no doubt, is the cost. It's gotta be something like 25k a year now for schooling, which is hard to manage, even with my scholarships. I don't want to be paying off debt til I'm 40, that's for sure.

But there's also the fact that I've often discovered and learned more on my own, than from school. Of course I've learned a lot, but it seems that after the first two years, a lot of these upper level courses are things I'm already well versed in.

Sure, I could definitely use more training and knowledge, but if I already know a large chunk of what's going to be taught, then I ask you, is it worth almost 3k per class when I'm maybe pulling knowledge out of it that's closer to being worth 1k or less?

Not to mention the time it takes up to learn, time that I'm PAYING the school, whereas on my own, I could be learning much of the same stuff, and MAKING money instead.

Other than the networking, and diploma, which in this field is often a useless scrap of paper, where experience and portfolio matter much more, I'm trying to decide if finishing school for another 50k is actually worth it, or if I should just bail on it.

I've had opportunities presented to me lately that I'd never dreamed I'd see. Nothing has quite congealed yet, but if it's an indicator of the future, then I'd say I have a good shot, right?

So those of you who have completed college, are in college courses now, or work in the industry at this moment or have before, what say you? What's your advice, anything I should know, anything I'm not considering? I can always go back if it doesn't work, they'll hold onto my scholarships for a few more semesters at least before they dump them... but yeah, that's my plight.

There are some great artists I know of who haven't completed higher educational courses for art, `adonihs, *PearlPhoenix, and *AndreeWallin, among many others. So it's definitely possible to make your way, I just need to figure out if it's the right path for me too.

I really appreciate anything anyone has the time to tell me, because this is a really big decision. I already have some advice from `adonihs' side of the table, and I think I have an idea of what I want to do, but I want to see what others think before I make a decision.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to attempt to cover a skin texture brush, cloud/smoke brushes, a patterned brush, and maybe a splatter brush, water brush, and stubble. I'll also talk about the palette knife brush I've been using in my matte painting demos.

If I don't get to them all, I can always do a second part, but after just a few, you should be able to get the hang of it. It's not hard, and it's going to help you a lot in your paintings and work.

If you miss it, it'll still be available to watch afterward on-demand. Also, feel free to pop onto the channel sometime when there isn't a show, I'll be on there periodically and if I'm around, I can answer questions you might have.

Matte painting...

If you're interested in the two matte painting "demos" I've done, you can watch those by clicking the on-demand button under the broadcast window. Sorry for those of you who couldn't make it in, I'll hopefully get the viewer cap lifted soon.

I was already going to be working on a matte painting for fun tonight, and I figured I'd cue you guys in on it in case you wanted to check it out from the beginning stages.

I'll be starting at 9pm EST, on my Livestream channel, and going for an hour or two before I sign off. You can see what time it'll be for you here. It's about an hour and a half from the posting of this journal.

The painting is going to be a 2012 style, apocalyptic city destruction scene. Yeah, I know, I'm excited too. And for those of you who don't know, matte painting is a technique used for film and games, where photos are used and painted into to create an ideal or impossible scene.

It's not going to be a comprehensive tutorial or anything like that, I'm by no means an expert at it, and matte painting can often be trial and error to get the right look, but I'll give some tricks and tips as well as show you how I go about getting into a matte painting, including inspiration, reference collecting, and texture grabbing.

I'll talk for part of it, but I'll also probably have periods where I shut up and just work. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to read them while I work.

See you guys there!

P.S. Like I mentioned before, the max is 50 people until I get some more stuff on the channel, then I'll be able to increase it, so I apologize if you don't make it in this time.

Hey guys, I want to do my first live painting session through the site Livestream soon, where you can watch me work and ask questions or chat with other viewers! I decided I'll do something easy and fun, like custom brush creation.

A lot of people use them, but I bet many of you just download brushes instead of making your own. I'm going to show you how easy it is to make awesome custom brushes instead of spending a ton of time hunting for what you need, and having it still not being quite what you want.

I'll go through the basic steps and show you how to make a few different types of brushes and walk through some of the more important settings. I plan to cover a skin texture brush and a cloud brush.

But help me out!

This is where I want your input. Give me some other type of brushes you'd like to see, and I'll see if I can fit the most popular ones in as well.

I'll let you guys know beforehand when I'm going to do it, but don't worry if you miss it, you'll be able to watch it later on-demand on the site.

The catch is, until I get a few tutorials and sessions up, the viewership is capped at 50 people. So keep mindful of the time once I announce it!

Other tutorials...

Also, let me know what other kinds of things you'd like to see later on besides custom brushes. I know texturing is something you guys would like to learn, and I also plan on covering layer masks, which will make your life WAY easier.

Take care guys, talk to you soon!

Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Michael Jackson, and now Billy Mays, the OxyClean man.

Actually, that was just a shit hook to get you to read the journal. I'd only kill myself if Jason Statham or Clooney died.

But in all seriousness...

Anyway, by the time you actually read this, I'll probably have surpassed the 500,000 views mark here on the site. I wanted to thank each and every one of you for supporting me, many of you for a year or more.

Without the support and constant confirmation that I'm doing something right, there's always that chance I would've fizzled out long ago, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I also wanted to personally thank `adonihs for not only being one of the best friends I could ever ask for, but for being a constant inspiration and source of amusement, and when I need it, comfort and support. One of the best people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.

I want to thank *PearlPhoenix as well, for sticking by my side, especially during the rough points. She's an amazing artist and a good friend when she wants to be... sometimes she just wants to play L4D, but that's okay, can't blame her. She has a Hunter fetish.

Contest.

Again, thank you everyone. And as a token of my appreciation, I'm going to try and put a contest together soon, the one I mentioned a little over two months ago. Give me a bit of time, and I'll see what awesomeness I get can together based on your suggestions.

Live feed.

Also, based on my latest poll, it seems a good portion of you are interested in a live feed of watching me work. I got the idea from *janaschi, and it's totally badass. I'll see what I can get together for that soon, and maybe even do some quick little lessons or tip segments when I have the time.

Take care everyone, don't die on me.

I think the best way to describe this movie is as a practical joke on moviegoers. I can see it now, a nude Michael Bay kicked back on a yacht counting his money as meteors fly overhead, lens flares abound, laughing at everyone.

Now, don't get me wrong, the movie wasn't bad per se, but it certainly wasn't good. Even if you're in it for just the action, you're going to find it hard to stomach a lot of the characters and dialogue... especially when you have not one, not two, but THREE Jar Jar Binks style characters that I can think of offhand.

And the story? Don't even pay attention, it's not worth your time. It's so outlandish and stupid, it's almost as if they didn't even try to ground it in reality. It's far fetched even by sci-fi standards. And forget a lot of the continuity with the first film.

When people tell you that you need to shut you brain off going into Michael Bay flicks, that's good advice. Except this time around, I'd go as far as suggesting you bring a Gameboy or a magazine. Once you have an hour and a half of time invested in the film, you won't want to walk out, but you might need a little extra incentive to stay for the remaining hour.

The action is intense, and the CGI for the most part is very strong and entirely kickass. But don't be surprised when you can't tell which robot is which in some of the fights due to Bay's shakey cam style.

However, the action and cinematography are about the only things that save this movie from being a total stinker. Without the massive budget, flashy special effects, and fan base, this would've been a B film that went straight to DVD. It looks big time, but feels low grade.

Anyway, I suggest you make your own opinions, but lower your expectations, and hopefully you'll enjoy it more than I did. I know this little review sounds like the movie was awful when it really wasn't... let's just say it was a very big disappointment.

Apparently our Golden Retriever Rocky was poking his nose where it didn't belong during his bathroom break and got skunked hardcore.

To make matters worse, he was let into the house before anyone realized he got hit. How no one smelled it before opening the door is beyond me. So I came home to what smelled like an abandoned slaughter house down in Alabama, mid-July.

We've lived in a rather comfortable equilibrium with this skunk for a while now. I see him every so often, usually late at night. Sometimes we lock eyes, I nod to him, he smiles back. Cool guy if you ask me, but Rocky can get overly excited, and probably took Skunk Man Jr. by surprise.

Luckily I'm on vacation this Sunday through Wednesday, so I don't have to put up with the stench much longer. Nothing spectacular, but it's at least some time off from a lot of hard work. Going cross state to a cottage on Lake Michigan, so that'll be really nice.

Books/magazines to check out:

Picked up some books and magazines to mull over while I'm there. The two most recent issues of ImagineFX which have some solid tips, Advanced Photoshop Magazine with a massive spread on matte painting including stuff from ^taenaron, Physics of the Impossible by Michio Kaku, my favorite physicist, and Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, which is soon to be a film by Martin Scorsese staring Leonardo DiCaprio, which looks amazing.

Work and more work...

As for paintings and other work, I have some commission stuff in the works right now, but once I get back I should be able to get rocking on some personal work again. I've got some really cool sci-fi stuff planned if free lance work doesn't get in the way again. I also have a really neat idea for a piece of fan art that I think you guys'll love.

Have you ever worked on some sort of task for so long, where it becomes the only thing that occupies your mind? Like, imagine painting something for a day straight, stressing on it, and then going to sleep... and then all you dream about is painting it. They call it the Tetris Effect, and on Wikipedia it says:

"The Tetris effect occurs when an activity to which people devote sufficient time and attention begins to overshadow their thoughts, mental images, and dreams.

It is named after the video game Tetris. People who play Tetris for a prolonged amount of time may then find themselves thinking about ways different shapes in the real world can fit together, such as the boxes on a supermarket shelf or the buildings on a street.[1] In this sense, the Tetris effect is a form of habit."

Sometimes it's useful, and I actually can solve problems in my dreams, wake up, and paint it. Other times, it's just my subconscious not being able to let go of the task.

I recently did some samples for a rather big company (fingers crossed), and now every time I shut my eyes, I'm coloring lines... over and over and over. I almost feel like I should be getting paid, lmao. Then I wake up, and I still see those damn lines and the colors I was putting to them...

Sometimes when you wake up, it feels like you never stopped working... You're just as tired as when you went to sleep and sometimes it's demoralizing when you finish something off in a dream, and wake up only to have to do it all over again.

Is that something that happens to you guys sometimes? And if so, in what way? Share your experiences with me, I'm interested in what sort of things pry their way into your subconscious and if you have any ways to beat them out. The mind is a curious thing.

A lot of artists have trouble with anatomy. I know I do. That goes for people that are just beginning, even up to seasoned veterans of the industry. So, what I've compiled here is a few resources that should help you practice and learn without as much pain or struggling as you might be used to.

Pose Maniacs

This first site is absolutely free, and it's absolutely invaluable. While it has many features, first and foremost, it has hundreds of 3D completely rotatable poses, all showing the muscles.

On top of this, it has a random pose viewer, which gives you a random pose and random angle on that pose.

There's also the timed random pose viewer, which can be set anywhere from 10 seconds to 90, which basically lets you do gesture drawings, forcing you to get quicker.

Then, there's the hands for drawing viewer, which gives a different type of 3D models that you can completely manipulate. It has more than just hands actually too.

The Structure of Man

Although I haven't yet had the opportunity to personally try out this DVD set, I think reading any one of the dozens of testimonials on the site will attest to it's quality.

It costs $45, but you're getting 43 hours of training and tutorials out of it on just about everything you need to know, including inventing poses and drawing the figure from your mind. More than worth it if you ask me and I'm sure I'll be picking it up in the near future.

Anatomy Figures

This last thing is actually something I fully intend to buy, as soon as I make sure I have proper funds. I think ANYONE who is serious about being an illustrator, concept artist, sculptor, 3D modeler, etc should have one of these.

Basic Model

The first one on the left is the basic one and you can view it here. It costs $219, but these are all 24" tall at 1/3 scale... yes two feet tall. It has detachable sections for better viewing as well, and on the site you can watch a 3D rotating video of it.

I think you'll agree that being able to get a full 360 degree view on a model at whatever angle you want, especially one so big, is a lot better and easier than trying to combine different anatomical views from a book in your head.

Sculpting Model

The second model you can view here. It's designed the exact same way as the first one, but it's specialized so you can practice sculpting on it with clay. It costs $275.

Professional Model

This one is the same as the first one, except it's painted up for a more accurate representation. You can view it here. It also comes with wall charts that help detail everything out for you and it runs about $425.

I'l...

Hey guys. My guess is in the next month or so, I'll be hitting 500k views. It's one of those things that you never really expect, and I'm still astounded by all the support and encouragement I get here on the site. And to be completely honest, without deviantART, I probably wouldn't be half the artist I am today.

This site has in many ways introduced me to the realm of possibilities that digital art has to offer, and it's always proved to be a great motivator to keep working.

So, that said, I want to be able to give something back. I'm thinking of some sort of contest or idea of that sort. Maybe some prints involved, subscriptions, and perhaps those Dead Space art books I mentioned way back. Could do some features too maybe, and on the off chance I have a bit of time on my hands, some sort of speed painting for the winner(s).

The problem is, I need an idea that's accessible to everyone, so something that's not necessarily based on artistic talent. But I also don't wanna do some sort of 500,000 screencap thing, cause I think those are cheap, unfair, and too easily manipulated.

So, give me your ideas, that way I have some time to sift through them, and hopefully come up with something cool. Thanks a lot guys!

I'm in the clear, but I wanted to talk to you guys about it. It's a very real threat and everyone should be informed and cautious about their own bodies and potential cancer.

A while back, I noticed a lump on one of my testicles and grew concerned. At the time, a few years back, I just sort of ignored it and did nothing about it.

Well, eventually I talked to one of my doctors, and she sort of wrote it off as nothing to be concerned about as well. So, I moved on, and didn't think of it anymore for quite some time.

Then about a year ago, I became concerned about it again, thinking that perhaps the doctor didn't realize what I was talking about, or couldn't glean enough info from a tug and rub.

At this point, I still did nothing about it, because quite honestly, I was too scared to. I didn't want to find out that I had cancer, no one does. Plus, I didn't want to risk losing my long, sexy mane.

But finally, this morning, I went in to get an ultrasound and see a urologist. They greased me up with freezing cold jelly, and looked inside my coin bag. Turns out, everything is fine, and there's nothing to worry about. BUT, I do bring this up for a reason...

Just about everyone these days has had their life touched by cancer in some way, whether it be a friend or family member, or themselves that have had it. It's a difficult thing to deal with, both for the individual with the disease and those who care about them.

But, in cases like testicular cancer and breast cancer, if the disease is caught early enough, the survival rate is very high. Same goes for skin cancer.

So, check yourselves, and do it often. If you don't know how, talk to you doctor or Google it. And if you find something suspicious, no matter how harmless it might seem, get it checked. Don't do what I did and put it off, don't let you fear keep you from getting help. Because if you don't go, and you do have cancer, you're literally killing your chances of survival.

Better safe than sorry.

Take care guys.
<sup>
P.S. Hope you like the journal layout I made last night! Got real sick of the old one.

Things have become a pain to work on lately, and surprisingly, new hardware is gonna motivate me like crazy.

Half the reason I ever get lazy or don't feel like working is that my computer tends to lag and skip for a while when I first start working, or if the file gets too hefty. But that'll be a thing of the past in approximately one week.

Here's my shopping cart below, and I stepped away from it all for fairly low cost too, which is even better!

And I mentioned before, and I'll say it again, I'm ready to kick my ass into high gear and really start whipping some stuff out.
Remember when the Halo movie got scrapped? Remember when the reported director Neill Blomkamp kicked ass, but they still wouldn't give him the time of day? District-9 is his new vision, coming soon, so do yourself a favor and read on, you won't regret it. So, like I said, I wanna get some some basic info from people who know a bit about it. I'll lay out a little list, anything you can answer or give me a little insight on would be greatly appreciated.

What kinds of mediums do you think work best and why?

Which ones feel close to Photoshop, but are unique to Painter still?

What are some key features I should know about that differentiate it greatly from Photoshop?

How do the different layers interact? Such as the canvas layer, and watercolor stuff, or the liquid ink, or the add water feature?

How well do PSD's stay intact if you transfer to Photoshop, or from Photoshop to Painter?

What are some things Painter does that you simply couldn't live without?

How easy is it to apply textures like you would in Photoshop to detail something?

Do the layer blending modes and brush modes work largely like the ones in Photoshop?

Are there any issues you foresee a beginner having that you could tell me about so I can avoid them?

And any other little tidbits of info or features you think would be useful for a beginner to know.

Thanks guys, looking forward to hearing what you have to say. I'm excited about getting into it, but I need a kick start. If I can, I'll let you know what this is all about relatively soon.

Take care!

This is something I meant to tell you guys about ages ago, but it slipped my mind entirely. Basically, I want to tell you about something that's going to make your experience with Wacom tablets or Cintiqs a hell of a lot nicer. I'll give you a little rundown here, but I also have a short video up that'll explain things really nicely for you.

For starters, you can go to the deviation by clicking below, which will link you to the YouTube video, or you can click here to go straight to the video.

So what this is, is something called SmudgeGuard. It's a little half glove that fits over your drawing hand. What this will effectively do is make your drawing experience a thousand times better. You won't get grease or oil on your Cintiq or tablet anymore, so your strokes are going to be much smoother and more natural, and your hand won't stick or drag ever again.

Everyone I know who's ever gotten one absolutely loves it, and wouldn't even think about working without it. Best of all, it's relatively cheap, especially for how much you're going to use it and how long it's going to last. So check out the video, it'll give you a better idea of what it's all about, or you can go directly to the website at SmudgeGuard.com to learn more.

Also, definitely check out the testimonials on the site. If I can't convince you, I'm sure they will.

Take care guys, pick one of these up if you get a chance. You won't regret it.

Today is my birthday. That means, almost 3 years ago, I purchased my first tablet with money I had gotten for simply aging another year. That also means it's been almost 3 years since I gave up on my tablet and tucked it away.

That's right, I bought my first tablet, fell in love with it, quickly grew frustrated, and just wrote it off as another waste of money. Then, somewhere around 4 or 5 months later, I decided I'd give it another go, and the rest is history as they say.

Another year older means another year closer to achieving my dreams. We all get frustrated guys, we all get that spark of doubt of whether or not art is really for us, or if we can achieve some other dream of ours. But you know what? You won't know until you try.

We all need a break sometime, but don't ever give up. If it's what you want to do with your life, fight for it. I don't know where I'd be right now if I just kept my tablet packed away and never thought about tackling the challenges it presented.

Sure, the road can be tough, but what road worth traveling isn't? So if any of you have written off your tablet and your dreams, dust that shit off and get back on it. Don't let someone else live your dream for you.

You only get one life, so live it to the fullest, and fight for what you want out of it. I'll see you at the top.

Essentially, this boils down to me sort of patting him on the butt pocket of his jeans, the one with the wallet in it. So, no harm, no foul.

As I do this, I see an employee out of the corner of my eye, walking by. I realize he just did a double take at my ass pat action. So I look at him as he's walking down the isle, and he glances back one more time, with this huge grin on his face.

Totally embarrassed, I'm thinking, oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit. I get this sudden sinking feeling like my mom just walked in on me buffing the banana or something. I yell down to him, "It was a joke!!!"

He responds, "He says don't punch me, so you slap his ass?!" and continues to walk around the corner, huge grin and all. Didn't give me an opportunity to explain further, the bastard!

Needless to say, we won't be going back there anytime soon. I don't think I can risk looking that guy in the eye again. Plus, I'm sure he told everyone else on shift, and probably posted security photos of the incident in the break room.

Fuck my life.

In other news, should have a painting up within the next day or so. It's looking pretty cool. Take care guys!

Alright guys, this isn't targeted at anyone in particular, so please no one take offense. I've noticed a growing trend, and I think saying something about it is long overdue.

I feel like too many people are showing a lack of respect on the site these days. `adonihs and I have discussed it on numerous occasions, and it's a source of much annoyance and every so often it forces us to rethink our participation in the site. It's often based on misunderstandings, or people just not fully thinking about how they're saying something.

And just so everyone knows, I'm not angry or upset, with you or anyone else. I just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention to make dA a more fun and hospitable place. If you're guilty of any of the following things, please don't feel like I'm targeting you or pissed at you, just make sure you read it and reconsider the way you comment.

So, let me lay down some general guidelines for when you comment on someone's journal or work:

BE RESPECTFUL

When you comment, read it to yourself as if someone were saying it to you to make sure it's not coming off wrong.

If you're going to critique, say something positive as well as things that you think need to be worked on.

If something reminds you of something, be sure to state what else you like about it, or give a compliment. No one likes to feel like they're being accused of stealing ideas. Even if inspiration is evident, it's okay to state it, just don't let it be the only thing you say.

(99.9% of you aren't guilty of this, but try to avoid comments of the "Reminds me of ______" nature, and having it be the only thing you say. You may think it's complimentary, but more often than not it comes off as rude or accusatory.)

Respect the journal space. Everyone is entitled to say what they like in their journal, there's no reason to attack someone or get upset if they say something you don't agree with. You wouldn't walk into someone's house and throw a fit because of what they're serving for dinner, would you?

If a journal is inviting you to start a conversation, then obviously it's okay to disagree or start some dialogue, but don't attack, belittle, or come off as rude. Respect their opinion, and they should respect yours.

If you're not interested in a journal based on the title, the preview, or the first few sentences, don't read it, simple as that. A lot of people simply complain about subject matter in journals, and I seriously don't get it. Just don't read it.

If you're going to state your subjective opinion in a negative way, don't bother. An artist doesn't need to know if you personally don't like the colors or some minor detail. It's good to know if an overwhelming amount of people dislike a certain aspect, but critique respectively and don't let the entire thing be subjective.

As touched on above, try to keep things objective when you critique. Remember, it's their work, not yours.

Have some fun, be friendly and outgoing. That's often how misunderstandings start, when something comes off as too serious when it's meant to be friendly.

So in respect to most of the points I've made, simply follow the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. Otherwise, one day you'll experience it yourself and realize how disheartening it can be sometimes.

Again, please don't don't feel like I'm upset with any of you. A lot of the stuff I've stated is trivial in a lot of ways, but when it adds up, it can become bothersome. I know you guys enjoy my work, and I'm grateful for it. Just try to put yourself in the artist's shoes from time to time so we can avoid misunderstandings, which is what a lot of this stems from.

Take care everyone, hope you have a great weekend.

I'm probably around 5 hours into a piece, which means its not too speedy, but it'll be a quicker concept than most that I do. I'm definitely going about it differently, which is interesting and fun. It's a good learning process and I'm sure I'll get quicker. Hopefully I'll have that up for you in a day or so, and then have some more stuff to show soon after.

Here's a tiny little snippet of it, just to tease you. Doesn't really reveal much.

Super happy fun time...

Next up, this past week was utterly awesome. Definitely a good time to sort of relax and just have fun for a while. =CaelestisTrucido and I played a ton of games, and watched movies, and generally just acted like badasses together.

Show me dem artists!

I want you guys to link me to some sweet artists you like, people you think I'd be into. I don't wanna sound like his father or something, but I'm really proud of him.

Thanks everyone, and take care. He suggested I take up speed painting again.

Is that something you guys would like to see, or are you just interested in my more finished work? I'll likely end up doing it regardless, just wanted to know if you'd like to see them posted. I might make a poll too, just to see, but I wanna hear your thoughts as well.

Dead Shock

Also, just an update on where I'm at with my work, I'm currently conceptualizing a nautical themed piece. Even if you're just a casual artist, and are doing paid work for someone, you should read this.

It's not something you need to follow word for word, but it's crucial that you have it in the back of your mind, and draw up some sort of agreement. There's always exceptions, such as if you know the person well and/or have substantial reasoning to trust them, but you can never be too safe.

Collab

In other news, the collaboration with ~teemunkle is in the early stages, and all I can say is that it's going to rock your socks off.
Alright, I can understand how some of you would take my last journal and news article the wrong way. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but also know that I wasn't sitting here pointing my finger at all of you, the people I'm referring are but small portion of the overall dA population. Those that watch me know the last thing I am is elitist or stuck up.

Virtually everyone who asks me a question gets an answer if I see it in time, I do my best to help out in the community by providing insight into technique, and giving critiques. I go out of my way to lend a helping hand, does anyone remember when I raised over $4,000 here on dA to help a friend who desperately needed surgery? Apparently not.

But, I'm not going to sit here and defend myself like that, because I don't feel the need to. Those of you who are attacking me, calling me an asshole or making petty threats, you need to grow up and get a life outside the site. I acted in a mature fashion, why can't you? I was trying to do the community a favor. This is going to be the last time I give in to the pressure to submit something like this as a news article.

I was never attacking you or your art, so next time, please read a little more thoroughly before you think I'm smacking you in the face and acting like I'm better than you. I assure you, I'm anything but an elitist or egomaniac.

And to the person who acted as a catalyst to this drama train, shame on you, act your age and act like a professional. You coax people into this type of stuff and show no shame in it. You yourself admitted to arguing for the sake of simply arguing.

I'm done responding to comments on the article or my journal, because quite frankly I've done enough repeating myself. Take away from it what you will.

Take care everyone.

Alright, a relatively serious journal for once.

I normally don't like to stir up trouble, but I've been noticing some things around this site that really irk me. Artists to be more specific, which I'm certainly not going to name. I'll break it down into a couple categories.

Also, I apologize for this being long, but I honestly think it's something all of you should read. It's important for not only you, but for the site and other artists.

IMPROVEMENT

There are artists on here, namely a handful of extremely popular ones, that show almost no improvement in their work over the years, yet people go more and more crazy over all their stuff.

I don't understand how it is that these artists can be satisfied with staying at the same level of quality and technique, and sometimes even regressing. Some of them don't ever venture out from their norm, and are completely satisfied with creating the same thing over and over again with the same, or similar compositions.

I don't get the point of being an artist if you're not going to push yourself to improve or do new things, and it's even scarier when it doesn't happen over time naturally as it should.

The praise and favorites they get here on the site sometimes cause certain individuals to perpetuate their mediocrity. They get convinced they're already great, and don't need to get any better, whether it's an ego thing or subconscious.

LYING AND MISLEADING

There are also artists on here that either lie about their techniques flat out, or intentionally mislead people into thinking they're more capable than they really are. This happens a lot, even with really big artists.

What really gets on my nerves is when someone praises the hell out of piece for being something that it's not, simply because they're duped into thinking the technique is something that it's not. This includes photo manipulation, smudging, mattepainting, etc. that are passed off as being completely painted. Even when someone makes an inquiry, it's often ignored, or they just act like it's no big deal or make excuses.

There's also artists who pass unfinished, or really sketchy paintings off as finished professional work, and I can't believe people would pay for some of it, even really big professional companies that are household names. Some of these people get sloppier as they get bigger, and I don't understand it. I understand deadlines, and volume of work, but sometimes it doesn't make sense.

I've got nothing against certain techniques, but I can't stand when people pass things off for something they're not. There was even a DD recently that someone tried to pass off as a painting that was nothing more than a smudged photo, with even the original jpeg compression intact in places.

Luckily I was able to help get it taken care of just shortly after it showed up in the stream, but people seriously just need to be honest and realistic here. You're not convincing anyone when the drawings in the rest of your gallery are pencil anime lines, or DBZ fan art, and you have ONE photo realistic rendering that you try to pass off as an original work, or like you painted it. And for the record, I'm not insulting those art forms, I'm just saying the mash up of different styles is often too extreme.

EGO AND POPULARITY

Part of the problem that perpetuates these issues is the drive for popularity, and the almighty ego machine. Most people with a substantial amount of pageviews will tell you that they mean nothing.

Me and many of the "popular"/pro types I know have a good mentality towards this type of stuff, and we make it a point to not develop these overinflated egos that eclipse our art. We don't let the BS go to our heads and suddenly think we're gods because we get a ton of faves and comments that tell us how great they think we are.

Ask someone like me or Adonihs and we'll just tell you we're two regular guys, even though a lot of the community likes to think otherwise. Too many people think they're above the rest, but will never admit it, or are too self-absorbed to realize it. I personally still feel like I'm taking my first baby steps when it comes to art.

SO....

So what's my point with all of this? I hate seeing people fall victim to such shenanigans, and even more than that, I hate seeing artists that are good or have potential turn into hacks and egomaniacs.

Everyone needs to open their eyes, artists and art admirers alike. If something looks out of place or too good to be painted compared to the rest of something, then it probably is, trust your gut.

And on top of that, if some big artist passes something mediocre or crappy off as something big, or great, or pro work, don't feel afraid to critiqu...

Teaser

It's going to be a couple days until I get a new piece up, but I wanted to at least give you guys a little preview/teaser. It was meant to be a quick piece between pieces, but that never turns out the way you expect. I think you guys will like it. It's some heavy sci-fi stuff, which I haven't really done in a while.

Also, what would you guys think if I put up a custom box on my front page to put teaser/WIP shots in, would that interest you enough to keep you checking back?

Halo Wars

And if you have a 360, download the Halo Wars demo immediately. I'm not an RTS fan for the most part, but the game is absolutely sick. The cinematics were done by Blur and they're fucking fantastic.

I personally like the art direction of the cinematics a lot better than that of the other Halo games, it's a lot grittier and more realistic. Not to mention they promise a pretty cool story so far...

Anyway, catch you soon... take care everyone.
