Time to dispel some rumors and put the facts out there:

The Development of the American School Of Design

The Essential difference in geography of Europe and North America by 1830 was that while in Briton, civilization had existed for centuries, and had established a complex structure of land ownerships, properties, roads, and towns, through which the railway system had the thread itself, in America there was a new virgin landscape. Roads and canals had started to be built, and especially in the thirteen colonies, towns have started to be developed, but it was not to the extent one would find Great Briton. So Railroads could pretty much go wherever they pleased without much consideration to whomever owned the land because, well, no one owned it!

The tendency was to lay tracks as quickly as they could to attain land grants, so lines where laid out in relativity to the land, which varied in topography. So American Railroads developed into rough windy lines that sometimes questioned the adage of Permanente Way. Once the tracks where laid and the land granted to the Railroads, they would come back and rebuild the line.

There where still a few horse tramways in the Eastern Sates, built often as not as feeders to canals; and it was on one such line, The Delaware & Hudson, that the first steam locomotive ran in North America in 1829. American Steam railroading got a jump start on The Baltimore and Ohio when in 1830 the railroad arranged for a locomotive contest similar to the “Rainhill Trails” through with even stricter guidelines and more powerful arrangement of locomotives. The most grueling of all for the experimental craft being a month’s practical use on the railroad. Five Competitors entered, all American, and the winner was a watch maker named Phineas Davis, who entered a vertical boiler four wheeler. Although the idea of a vertical boiler proved an evolutionary dead end, it was a practical design, and in fact 18 of his locomotives where immediately built for the B&O, and were so well made and engineered they stayed in work until 1902! To this day, Davis is considered one of the great Railroad Pioneers.

Technically speaking, the important difference between British and American Locomotives at this time resulted from the Latter’s need for sturdier equipment to operate in its rough environment, and greater need to save capital outright. British-type four wheeled engines and cars and ridged plate frames just wouldn’t stand up to the track work, tough grades, and long distances. This for example, meant that passenger coaches had to built much longer, needing four wheeled trucks rather then two axels for weight, and the abandonment of compartments altogether in favor of open salons was simple a matter of cost saving. On the other hand, this proved a great opportunity as the scarcity of tunnels and roads to go under, as well as ground level platforms, meant that there was plenty of room to build high and wide.

The Steeper grades and longer distances put an early emphasis on the need for more powerful locomotives. American locomotive builders, after finding the British shops such as Stevenson’s, lacking to fulfill their needs, soon developed them greatly. First the use of pilot or guiding wheels to lead their locomotives threw the long curves, and then longer and more powerful boilers on lighter frames. This soon developed by 1840 the 4-4-0 class, a simple, robust, and powerful machine that remand the most common form of power until the turn of the Century.

As early as 1840, the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway of England, faced with the problem or working up the 1 in 37th Lickey Incline and hearing good reports on them from across the pond, ordered 14 typical 4-4-0s from Norris of Philadelphia. They found the locomotives to be extremely satisfactory and used them as models in their own developments. But for the rest of the 19th century, the development of railroads in the world outside Europe and North America was, as a rule almost, in the hands of either British or American engineer’s Schools of Design. British Engineers where given a head start by their country’s political influence around the world, by many colonel administrations from the more basic and powerful methods of the Americans better suited to local conditions.

After a lot of debate I have found a shelf layout in my room to be a practical solution. I have a nice point-to-point track plan that represents the town of Blue Ridge. It includes the Depot, run around track, yard-servicing facility, and a few yard tracks. The Roundhouse, car sheds, and such unfortunately will not be included.

The Only issue with the layout is…the shelf is already occupied by the “Sara Jane” Railroad yard for my extensive HO Layout known as “Southeastern Railroad.”

No, I guess the question is, Do I want to sacrifice one Railroad, for another….hmmmmm.

Yah, well, mine was alright. Halloween is never my Favorite time of the year, I guess because I never really do much with it anymore. Went Ghost hunting...didn't find a thing. *shrug* oh well.

anyway, on Thursday we did the "Derail Shuffle" The deal about that is, we had to place 5 cars on track 14...but the throat to track 14 could only accommodate one car without the locomotive. Otherwise your over the derail and well...screwed. So to do this we needed two locomotives to "dance" around the car. I was the conductor for 104, who did all the dancing among the sidings, while 1026, our GP9 ran among the mainline picking up the cars and brining them to the throat. In, out, in, out, all the siding we ran about. XD being the conductor I had to think ahead three steps in each of my movements, and I was cunningly on the ground, our riding equipment.

We worked late into the night. Night time got especially dangerous when switches couldn't be seen, and I still had to move among the darkened equipment and tracks. I was issued an electric lantern, do to the fact that the oil ones where locked up inside. (shut up steamby, in a situation like that one you took what was given and didn't complain) and worked until 10:30 when the last car was in place.

anyway, I'm starting to work on getting my hours on 1026. which is good. ^^ Its not hat hard to operate once you get the hang of it.

Also special thanks to CNW4648 for giving my an N-scale 4-8-4. Its a beauty and goes a long way to enhancing my miniscule collection of N-scale equipment.

Yah, two movie reviews in one! XDXD

Ok, I saw "Bolt" for the first Time this week. and I saw a made for TV train move called "Train Master" which I'm assuming was made to cash in on "unstoppable"

Bolt

being a furry fan I naturally couldn't get away from it. Allot of my friends saw it and told me that it was right up my ally. I had been reluctant to go out of my way for it so when the right moment came to see it, I jumped.

It....was....awesome.

The plot fallows a white shepred who thinks he has superpowers as he travel across America to find his girl who he thinks has been kidnapped.

I see why so many people like this film. First off the intro is freaking epic! Then the character himself is just....lovable. He's so damn series and all. The animation was flawless, Disney doesn't have the look up to pixar anymore, they can make their own epicenes. Things like smoke, skies, trees, and general fluids seemed to look better then anything Pixar had done. The backgrounds as they ran cross America where spectacular, and it had its "Funny Moments" Mostly the interaction between Mittens and Bolt being somewhat of a comic relief.

and yes, there where some trains in it, but Disney had yet to understand the 'era" idea. The first train was a well animated and detailed CSX intermodal stack train. (Yes...CSX was even written onto the locos and it had TTX well cars and everything! Someone did their homework ont hat) But the second train was made up of old PFE refers and boxcars O.o with Journal boxes and roofwalks.

There where some spots that I had some trouble with, for one Bolt seemed really...inexperienced...I mean REALLY inexperienced, I would think hat even as a movie star he would know what feeling hungry is?

Never the less Bolt was awsome and I recemend it for any dog film lover. ^^

Train Master.

Oh boy, here we go again with another Hollywood Runaway Train....but this time threes a twist! The runaway has a cargo of rugrats on board! The story focuses around a group of 5 kids who accidentally set a solitary locomotive into motion and...don't know how to stop it o.O (how about pulling the brake handle?)This Movie, I'm kinda in a part on. I think it has one of the better plots in the Runaway train sagas...for one there no dangerous cargo that could go boom, for the other the way it runway is rather well...believable. On top of that the solutions being brought to stop the train, aka, turning handbrakes, opening angle cocks...well....the people who made "Atomic Train" could take a few lessons. Heck they even...stop the train without wrecking!?!.........wow, thata actually, rather original. On top of that there are so rather nice train scenes and an interesting race between an SW1500 and a highrailer. The kids where pretty ingénues on figuring ways to help themselves out, such as making a "SOS" sign and waving it out the window as the locomotive rolled across grade crossings. Plus theres a cameo by a live steam Erie Triplex and a nice Modal railroad.

But even with that this movie can not be saved. The acting is rather...cheesy, and I found the child actors annoying. The adult actors all had the "redneck railroader" act going on, and the ending was so cheesy that I wish the train had wrecked.
The other thing that bothered me was the way the runaway was handled, it seemed no one knew how to turn the brake handle...I mean these kids resorted to cutting random wires that appeared out of no where before they even look at the control panel. and the whole (nothing works) excuse was well....too convenient. The adults where just as bad, I mean it took them and hour and 40 minutes of screen time before they figured out the solution was pulling the angle cock. I was sitting there in my head coming up with way better plans to stop the train. Including:

a. Pull the train brake Handle
b. pull the independent brake handle
c. reach into the electrical box and push "stop" on the engine run start control.
d. Get Bolt from above to use his laser eyes and melt the brake on.

Also there are allot of "funny" moments...and by funny stuff that made me groan so loudly I almost reached for the remote. and there was a moment where in the middle of all this fun, one of the kids starts hitting on the only girl in the rugrat group.....WTF? Your in a life or death situation on a runaway Killer train, and you manage to start hitting on the only girl on board. Damn that's ballsy, and this is coming for the guy who ran a 44-tonner with his GF sitting on his lap.

Also the ending was well....anti-climactic. Although I was unbelievably surprised the where able to stop the train! I was expecting it to run headlong into the nuclear plant with the random cougar that was staining on the tracks. although the soppy moments after they stopped it mad...

BOYCOTT THE POLAR EXPRESS!!!!!! has been the calling cry from Blue Ridge in the last few months approaching the Christmas season. I hate to say it...but its true, The Polar Express has wrecked on of the BRSRR's big trains.

How?...let me explain.

See the BRSRR (along with allot of small preservation lines)had a deal that around Christmas time we can run a "Polar Express" train based around the book. We had a license with the Van Allsburg family, and indeed at one point Chris Van Allsburg rode on of the train in the early years and read the book outloud!

But of course Warner Brothers has taken the license for the book when it created the movie. Now that means our license now fell under there control...no problem, right.

Wrong

Warner brother terminated the license without warning AND is sueing the Blue Ridge Scenic for use in the three years we had run "Polar Express"s without there permission even though we had the original license from the original family, and had no clue the Warner Brother had retained the license on train operations.

The whole BRSRR is Shocked. What is meant to be a kind Christmas theme has turned into something very major, all brought on by a large soulless company that just wants to make money. This hasn't just been the BRSRR, but other railroads as well, this year in particular they've come down hard and without warning on railroads who are struggling to make ends meat and in one case, keep a steam locomotive going.

so I say Boycott The Polar Express. I now refuse to have anything to do with the movie, for I am not giving those money sucking leaches any of my money and I urge those of you who want to keep US preservation lines there rights, to do so too!

( PS allthough I will agree its a good movie )

The locomotive being run as fallowed

Naitoches
Terrebonne
New Orleans
Sabine
Tiger

and finally, written unceremoniously into the ledger. "Leased W&A Texas"

The Texas! I found the Texas...in NEW ORLEANS!!!!!! Being run by THE UNION ARMY!!!!

This came as one huge surprise. As 1862 drew to a close, W&A leased the Texas, but what happened to the locomotive is unknown. All we do know is that in 1866, the locomotive was reported in Saltville Virginia. Apparently, somewhere in the frew The Texas went to New Orleans to work on the NOO&GW, and when that line was captured and run by the Union, Texas was run along with it.

Ironic, it turns out that after rescuing the General, the gallant ol' Texas was captured in the end.

This is so exciting, I finally have a starting point to fallow the Texas and find out exactly what happened in the "Missing years" Already I contacted the chapter historian and its created quite a frenzy.

Edit: rather then rant again on the subject that has caused the last great clusterf**k among up. I thought it best to just repost this. I stand by it now, as a I did then. While I will not name anybody, we all need to mature a little, and also to not take things as they seem. I learned one heck of a lesson today, pepole can be two-faced. Sadly, its sometimes pepole who you have great fath in. We need to stop gathering in groups againt eachother. While yes some of us act very imature and self centerd, we shouldn't let the actions of one atack the rest. let grudges stay between two pepole rather then spread.

They say the pen is mightier then the sword…well what I about the Pen Down (or type down) has to be on of the biggest issues regarding the youth rail fan basis…. ever.

Supposedly, there has been a “schism” (or split for you non-literary folks) regarding those of us on both Youtube and DA. I must say this…there is NO SCHISIM!!!! WE HAVE NOT SPLIT! What has happened, is a bunch of us have suddenly decided to whine and complain and segregate themselves from the rest of us. What makes the issue worse is that this group by doing this has called upon themselves the wrath of the rest of us. While I have been staying out of it for the most part because I don’t want to get involved. Well now it has driven me to the point that I must protest.

No More whining, moaning, sucking up to, copying or stealing.

This has all started because someone who shall remain unnamed (even though we all know his name) decided to steal art, and then rip off other artists. This has long been taken care of, as it should have been. Now before people start screaming “Hypocrite” at me, let me put down the three things that I think should be discouraged

1.	Stealing art. And I don’t mean “tributes” I mean down right taking work someone else did, and calling it your own. Now while I personably get a kick out of, and sometimes even get an ego boost out of this. Its bad, it makes you look bad, and it is against the rules here on Deveantart. Draw your own work. Tributes are nice, but it gets annoying when I see a wagon top similarly designed WOLF RR styled 4-4-0 numbered “97” doing relatively the exact same things as my own “97”
2.	Bullying. I don’t mean letting someone know that their art peace sucks and then outlining why, I mean going to someone’s page and spamming it. We all are weird and strange in our own ways. I mean hell, I have a cocker spaniel running a steam locomotive!
3.	Egos. Let me tell all of you. Put your hand in a water bucket….now take it out. Is there a hole where your hand was?….NO. I do not have time for over inflated egos. Now I’m not saying that any of you do, but really, we all are on the same plan of existence, stop looking down at newcomers who have no idea what they are doing. And Newcomers…stop trying to do stuff just for the attraction, Ok. You art is all I want to see.

So, with that said: To those of you in the “fun side”: Deventart is an art website. I came here because I like to draw, and I like people to see my work and enjoy it. I do not come here to become “Super popular” or one of “the crowd” we should all respect each other and stop complaining/bitching/sucking up/placing ourselves in a group. Aren’t we all in a group anyway?….Railfans. (except for me…I’m a RailROADER XD Jking) This crap where we are all attempting to gain fans has to stop. Also, just because you like it, doesn’t mean we all have too. Case and Point…I think the Beatles suck. Now does that make me bad…No…dose that mean all you Beatles fanatics are stupid…No. It just means to my ears the Beatles are nothing more then utter rubbish (which they are!) end of story…my opinion, and I’m aloud to have it. And Please, enough with the sucking up. Ok, I’ve had enough of seeing un-original designs that are clearly rip-offs. Make your art. And don’t give me that “well…I don’t know how to” crap because guess what…your on an ART website. If you can’t or are unwilling to create your own art, then you don’t belong here.

As for the “Serious Side” and yes I am putting these down as “sides” because t...

Arlen Specter, D-Pa., initiated the project two years ago, bringing Norfolk Southern together with the U.S. Department of Energy and Penn State University, which supplied critical help with managing the batteries, said Mark Manion, Norfolk's executive vice president and chief operating officer.

No. 999 is a switcher, powered by 1,080 12-volt batteries, which fully charged can operate the engine for three shifts.

The locomotive emits no pollution, unless you count what's emitted by power plants generating the electricity to recharge the batteries - and that's much less than what's thrown off by standard diesel-electric locomotives.

They expects to build an over-the-road version with more batteries by 2011.

That locomotive would run coupled at first with regular diesels, which could help recharge its batteries - though eventually, battery engines could power a train by themselves. They require about the same manpower to build as a diesel, but are cheaper to maintain.

Norfolk Southern named the engine 999, echoing the NYC&HR 999, the first locomotive to go 100 mph.

The locomotive was considered a sucess.
Some things get better with age!

As some of you may, or may not know, I like to listen too, and collect, old radio shows! I mean old radio shows from the 1960s, 50s, and 40s. I don't why, but there are some great jewels out there.

Anyway, a while back I got into a conversation with about a radio show he liked. I downloaded a few episodes of the show, and too be honest...it was ok, but not my style.

But to return the favor, and hopefully pass one some really great old time radio. I would like to share a show with you all.

Gunsmoke was one of the premier radio shows, and in fact is considered the original "western" this show started the Western Drama and it sure is a dusey. With 900 Episodes, a TV series, and a movie that's due to come out in 2011. Even the Simpson's Bows down to Gunsmokes blazing trail. Being one of the first it isn't a "childish" show.

The show fallows Sheriff Matt Dillon as he cleans up the town of Dodger City. Some listeners, such as vintage radio authority Dunning, have argued that the radio version of Gunsmoke was far more realistic than the TV series. Episodes were aimed at adults and featured some of the most explicit content of their time, including violent crimes, scalping, massacres, and opium addicts. Many episodes ended on a somber note, and villains often got away with their crimes. Dunning writes that Dillon "played his hand and often lost. He arrived too late to prevent a lynching. He amputated a dying man's leg and lost the patient anyway. He saved a girl from brutal rapists then found himself unable to offer her what she needed to stop her from moving into... life as a prostitute." (Dunning, 304)

Nonetheless, thanks to the subtle scripts and outstanding ensemble cast, over the years the program evolved into a warm, often humorous celebration of human nature.

Here is one of my favorite episodes. "Bit Tom" The file was taken from the "Jack Benny Podcast" Mr. Benny has done a great favor by posting and preserving over 300 radio shows. The episode is available for download. Please take a listen and enjoy. Comments are welcomed.

[link]

The last time we had a number even close was 700 at our 30-year anniversary, July 15, 2000. We where running trains every five minutes at one point. Dispatching became a real job and I being the conductor juggled squeezing passengers, keeping my schedule, and trying to run the train admits all the chaos. In the end it was one fun and lucrative day.

Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson

But both pale in a loss to the railway world.

Peter Jones, the owned and operator of the Compton Down Railway, has passed on. For those of you who don’t know, He was a well-loved and highly respected member of the garden railway scene, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him or had read his wonderful writings. His articles I lived for. His style and approach to model and real railroading was one in which I just loved. I never met him in real life, but I felt as if I did in his writing. His railway the CDRW [link] is one of the most beautiful railways I have ever seen. Steamby51 it would be your world in miniature. It was such a beautiful and magical railway, that even I, the anti-British Rail, all US steam lover, was trapped in its embrace. Perhaps it was because the CDRW wasn’t a British railroad, even though that was its location. It was a steam railway, running both 4-4-0s with balloon stacks, and buffer plated narrow gauge slate locos.

And Mr. Jones was a steam railroader.

Peter Jones, 1944-2009

Wow, what a workweek. We got 104 running again, which is a blessing because it means I got my old go-cart back, and bane because her leaky brakes are as bad as ever.

I also got a visit from a fellow rail fan and friend. Her brakes acted up the whole time he was onboard (which figures) but once he left I made two of the best runs I ever have! I think 104 does that on purpose. He also sold me two boxes of flexi track with assorted odds and ends, as well as a box of cork! ^^

Anyway, 104 behaved herself for the most part. I made my first couple up, I got involved in my first switching run, And I got my authorization! How many of you guys get to run a locomotive on a daily basis (and I’m not talking Train sim)….I DO!

Which brings me to my next big adventure. This Saturday we brought our 2-8-0 consolidation locomotive to the top of the hill. Freshly painted and rebuilt cosmetically, she was a sight to behold! Now here the tricky part. Its not as simple as pull it up the hill and place it on a track. As the locomotive is so big that you just can’t fit it at the top of the hill. So 104 and our GP7 1026 spent an hour dancing around this thing as we leapfrogged her from the bottom of the hill over a few tracks. This was a real test of my lack of skill. The steamer weighed a good bit, and we decided to do the movement without air as it would take so long to get pass threw pressure to raise. So I had to use my 44tonner as a 44 ton anchor! For the most part it worked. (Those of you who still live by train simulators…this weekend showed me how hopelessly out of touch they are!)

By the end of the day, 21 was sitting next to General II. And now that I have my authorization, this will be the last “Engineer’s Log” for a good while.

In other news, I’m preparing for my trip to Railcamp 09. The itinerary looks awesome but I won’t lie saying I’m a little nervous. Its just this is the first time Southeastern Railway Museum and the Atlanta Chapter have been represented. So I want to do my railroad proud.

Shut up Railrunner, I still don’t want to hear any stories for you just yet. I want to be surprised!

Also, Blue and the Gray Episode 4 is out!
Ok, I got an interesting experience today. First off 104 was up to her old tricks again. Her engines where running fine and throttling normally, but for some reason power wasn’t getting to the traction motors. So Instead of moving she just sat there like a rock and I looked utterly retarded trying to get her to move.

We ended up shutting her down and firing up 1026 our GP9. man THAT was a sweet ride. I got to take her throttle and run her a couple of times. She can be rather intimidation because she builds up so much momentum. Plus her gearing (which is for passenger) makes it so that you have to open the throttle wide, up to notch 4, before she starts moving. Then you have to time it so you shut the throttle before she gets too much speed. But she has to coolest out-of-tune horn ever! People all the way out in downtown Duluth could probably here me laying on that thing! Unlike 104 with her strange air brake system, 1026 just walks away with our two-car train. She also gains this nice rocking motion, which is really relaxing and soothing.

Of course as if getting used to a new locomotive witch I am not accustomed to operation with isn’t hard enough, around 2:00 the dark clouds started to roll in. At 2:20 the thunder rolled and the lightning cracked and the rain started to roll in. and I mean IN! We had sheets of rain so bad I couldn’t see the track in front of me.

We also had some minor flooding. Which gave me the ultimate Rock pool experience! Once we got the train in I saw the General II up to her flanges in water. Once the rain stopped I went out and sat on her pilot. I so wished I had a camera because everything around her was under a good inch of water and was reflecting the sky so perfectly you couldn’t see the track or ground. I skipped a couple rocks in the water from her pilot beam!

Also I saw one of the most beautiful movies ever! “The Legend of 1900” Its about this piano prodigy who spent his whole life on a Victorian era steamship. Watch it…NOW! It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you want to go get some cheese and eat it!

That’s all for now!

I had an awesome date with my girlfriend, went Putt-putt golfing and got my arse wailed on. (she got 4 hole in ones…I gots none) Then I begin another week of engineer training.

Which brings me to my next topic

As I’m going threw my training, I thought why no keep yawl up to date on the day-to-day antics of an operating tourist railroad!

Anyway, I was the engineer for the regular runs today. New York Ontario and Western #104 was our power. She acted pretty good today, unlike yesterday or in the past. See 104 is a very uh…special…engine. Her brakes, throttle, and gear are so old (60) that it sometimes has a mind of its own. Pulse she leaks water like a singe.

Anyway, watered her like normal, dropped halfway in the sight glass before the morning was over. Ended up watering her no less then five times. My fireman went between Burt Chu, and Mark Schafer. Both are qualified engineers and essentially are there in case I F**k up. Both are awesome guys. They never had to lift a finger under my command and pretty much spent the runs giving tips and staring out the window. Towards the end of the day they didn’t even bother riding in the cab.

104’s brakes acted normal…well…as normal for 104. See 104 has a very interesting feature. We’ve tried again, and again, to figure out why she does this. But for some reason whenever you put the train brakes in Lap…it slowly applies instead of just sitting there. Sometimes it’s very slow, sometimes its quick, and sometimes it doesn’t happen at all.
Anyway, I learned how to use this to my advantage, whenever I want a very gradual stop, I can place the brakes in lap. A good engineer can even work around the inconsistencies. But I’m not yet a good engineer, so every time I put the brake on it’s a new adventure! Needless to say every now and then I slightly banged the cars and rolled in and out slack as I corrected this. Hopefully I can master this strange art.

I also learned that nothing is scarier then trying to stop your train before it runs up the train into an oncoming freight train, even when the freight train is aligned for NS’s mainline and not your spur. (although I do love exchanging horn blasts with the unit freights!)

BTW…MSTS and TRAINZ…. nothing, and I mean nothing…like real life. They aren’t even in the same ballpark! The real thing is much, much, more tense, depending on touch, feel, sound, noise, and vibrations. It really is a stressful job. But oh so rewarding to come up the 3 percent grade on the hill with both engines charging and leaning your head out the window, one band on the throttle, the other on the brake.

Ok, the strangeness began this morning when I was going around Southeastern Railway Museum unlocking cars and turning on lights. I unlocked the Sleeping car “Tugalo River” and this black cat runs out! I mean like out of freaking nowhere!

Then my Girlfriend visits me, which on its own is freaking epic! We watched flash anime videos in this 1900s Pullman. XD There is nothing stranger and yet so wicked awesome then anime mixing with trains!

Then we had a near catastrophe when one of our volunteers twisted his ankle when he fell from a moving locomotive. He’s all right, got checked out at the hospital and despite the strange way it turned they said all he needed was to put some ice on it.

Then once the Museum was closed and my girlfriend had gone home, I went down to the Museum’s library.
The best way to describe SERM’s library is a literal Trainload of info. Really! Its two baggage cars full of anything and everything you could possibly want! Books, papers, documents, designs, artifacts, PC files! It’s flipping awesome.

Anyway, I checked my E-mails and accounts from the PC back there and spent the rest of the day till around 8:45 reading, searching and coming up with new story and art ideas.

Then my mother surprised me and dropped me off at the “New London Theater” and I saw the play “Fools” I love the NLT! It’s a real live play theater! Not a school function, and yet not one of those large giant theaters like Broadway, but a nice simple theater.

All in all it was an epic, yet strange, day.

Strange how you forget so much yet when you see it, it lights that fire in you that caused your obsession to begin. It really is a beautiful movie, between the backgrounds, plot, caricatures, soundtrack…just EVREYTHING is perfect. It one of the last great hand animated films, before the Japan Invasion and CGI overload. “Balto” really is a hidden jewel.

I Might continue the trend and set down and watch all the two sequels now that I finished the original, and spring brake is here.
Virtual Railroad: (N) a Fantasy railroad that exists in the Virtual World. Is represented by means available to access. IE: Drawings, stories, and you tube videos. It can also exist in model or real form outside the virtual world. Examples: WOLF, Mystic River traction Company, Gunpowder falls Railroad, Granite St. Boiler works.

Ok, Today’s journal is about Fantasy railroads…and what separates them from the crap that some people have been setting up. It seems that all of the sudden several Deventart and You tube accounts are popping up that are specifically designed to gain more views and become popular. Without mentioning names I would like to draw the line between the two.

Deventart is an ART website. Which means drawings, stories, and photographs. NOT maps with MS-Paint lines drawn on them. Please people; this is about art and mixing railroading and your other interests into it. To me Railroads are art, and its my tool for showing the world my own Railroad. The lives and tales of the trains and their crews is what makes the WRR real. Not copies of the same “make your own wolf/dragon/furry and a map. Now there are some very up and starting railroads out there. But please, draw them, write about them, show us what they are.

Wow, what a weekend.

First on Saturday I wore my new wolf tail to work at Southeastern Railway Museum. Early in the morning I got the chance to get throttle time on one of our 44-tonners, the 104. There was the awesome moment where I had my tail dangling out the cab window (the seat is right at the edge) and was piloting the locomotive, tail flapping like a flag in the wind!

Now THAT’S a railroad furry!

Then there were all the awesome comments about it. Most of the Railroad crews thought it funny and interesting, and the passengers all commented on how whimsical it was.

Then on Sunday was had the 50th anniversary celebration. I met [link] face to face. He and a few other guys came down from the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. He was really awesome and we had a nice time chatting and eating, using the pilot beam of the 4-6-2 #750 as a table! Talking and laughing about everything from our Railroad’s, TRAINZ, railroading in general, and virtual railroads. (I hope I didn’t bore him with all my WRR junk)

Anyway, it was an awesome weekend. The Celebration was awesome, I got to drink champagne and toast my Railroad, whare a tail on Railroad property, and meet a fellow Railroader who was like me.

Can’t wait for SERM’s 100th bash!

A little over fifty years ago, a group of forward looking men gathered to plan a major undertaking. These where men of imagination who all shared one thing: the love for trains. Some we’re railroaders, others work-a-day people like you and me. Steam was disappearing rapidly and these men wanted one locomotive to be saved. The Atlanta and West Point 4-6-2 #290.

They formed a group called “the 290 group” (Oh so original!) and arranged to have the locomotive donated and displayed. But as their numbers grew that formed plans far reaching indeed. More equipment was being gathered far and wide, locomotives, cars, and historic artifacts began to fall into the group. They wanted to preserve the railroads of Atlanta in this time where things where changing rapidly. They re-formed to become the Atlanta Chapter of the National railway Historical Society and started to organize a museum to publicly display their rapidly growing collection.

In their early plans, they envisioned a 30 acre site with a roundhouse, turntable, loop of track, and coal/water tower. They even dreamed of re-building the grand Atlanta station Sherman burned down during the civil war! These were far reaching dreams, and when the chapter received their chapter, they went ahead and tried to build it. There have been slowdowns and setbacks, but we have constantly moved forward.

Today Southeastern Railway Museum has grown in every way imaginable. With two display buildings, a two track shop with overhead crane and sand blasting shed, several steam locomotives, two undergoing restoration, a train ride on resurrected yard track, exhibit hall, railroad station, and massive collection of railcars, we have become something with our early pioneers dreamed. And you know…we’re digging the pit for that turntable we always wanted!

This weekend Southeastern Railway Museum turns 50. and here is too another 50 years of railroad preservation!

Not to start any un-do rumors as I’m not sure of all the ins and outs…butÂ

As you may, or my not know, the Blue Ridge Scenic, inspiration and prototype for Lady and Tramp’s Railroad, is operated under a freight short line called the Georgia Northeastern. The GNRR runs cement trains mainly to a plant in Mckaysville called “ Pilgrim’s Pride.” The GNRR runs the trains, takes care of the tracks and maintains the equipment that the Blue Ridge scenic operates. The two company’s run hand and hand.

Pilgrim’s Pride went bankrupt this year. There is a nice chance that if things don’t get better, it will close.

If its closes the GNRR will have to cut back on its revenue lines…including the Blue Ridge Scenic. This might be the last operating season for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. And if the economy doesn’t turn around, the line along the Taccoa River into Blue Ridge will be abandoned.

I’m hoping things get better soon; I would hate to see this beautiful mountain railroad lost. It is the inspiration and prototype for the fictional Blue Ridge division of the WRR. It would be quite a loss to the surrounding area, as well as the railroad community.
