Sometimes someone says an unusual phrase that would be a good name for a band. At some point in 2005 I decided to start keeping a list of such names. Consider it my tribute to Dave Barry.

I'll be adding more names as I discover them, as well as accepting suggestions from all of you. Bear in mind, however, that the best band names are things that you happen to hear or say by chance. Don't sit down and try to think of names--the best ones have a story behind them.

If you form a band with one of these names, or someone you know does, or you find out about one, let me know so I can add a note.
That said... the list. [Newish items marked with a star.]

I've noticed that whenever I quit out of AOL Instant Messenger these days, I get an error message saying, "The application has unexpectedly terminated. We apologize for the inconvenience." Should I be concerned that the last thing my computer expects me to do is quit out of AIM of my own free will?

Time for an art update. The only thing currently in progress is my sketch of Salgrus, which I'm currently trying to trace and color in Illustrator. Yeah, I know... look, at some point I'll draw a character who isn't Salgrus. I promise. For instance, I still need to draw that dragon for ~silvermoonlight55555. Soon, I promise. After that, since I recently introduced my character Kuna from Avistasis (~amberfoxwing knows whom I'm talking about) on an RP board elsewhere, I should probably post a drawing of her here.

And after that... well, I'd really like to get started on one of my comic ideas. But which one? Well, my idea was to draw the first few strips of each one--sort of a "pilot episode," if you will. That way, I can find out A) which of my comics are the most fun to actually draw and B) which ones people like the most. I've already done this with my series about Scotthew and Alacrity, which I'm tentatively calling omgwtflol.

And now, because my need to share my cleverness with the world can't wait that long, and because it didn't seem worthy of an actual deviation submission, I give you...

Ten Sad Truths of Gaming

1. The only one who wants to hear stories about your character... is you.
2. It is physically, temporally, and philosophically impossible for five or more people to find a time when they can all reliably show up at a gaming session every week.
3. If you game long enough, this will stop being true, because you will have no life.
4. You will roll your eyes at old-timers who complain that older editions were better and that the new ones are a ploy to get more of gamers’ money, right up until the moment they release a new edition of a game you’re currently playing, at which point you will become one of them. You will still go out and buy all of the updated materials anyway, you worthless corporate whore, you.
5. Each additional supplement you buy only decreases the chance that you will actually use any given rule in any one of them.
6. If you hold enough gaming sessions at your house, then at a certain point your mother will stop offering to make cookies for you and your friends and start asking when you’ll move out of the basement.
7. I lied in the previous sad truth. You have no friends.
8. You will always run out of snacks. Always.
9. Your DM is a spiteful, bitter person with an unfulfilling personal life. So are you, actually, but the difference is that he’s the one with the power to take out his anger on you in-game.
10. You might think that my use of “he” in the previous sad truth is politically incorrect, but I actually used it because your DM is, and always will be, male.

Dude, I should totally put this on a T-shirt.

Okay, that's it for now. Stay tuned till next time for Ten Sad Truths of Musical Theater.

Aaargh!

Well, this is sort of annoying. Okay, people who have been following my dA site for a while might remember that for some time now I've been working (occasionally) on a comic in the form of a documentary about a bunch of washed-up fantasy adventurers (a la "This is Spinal Tap"). However, I've learned that there's a new TV show premiering tonight, Drawn Together, with a very similar premise: a "reality show" about what are basically stock characters from different genres of animation. Okay, it's not exactly the same, but now I worry that if I ever do start And Cut!, everyone will assume that I'm ripping off Comedy Central's idea. Ah well.

Still, I'll probably end up watching the show, because it looks like it just might be funny. The overall concept is a real winner, at any rate. Everything depends on execution, as they say.

Oh, and there is a fantasy-RPG-type-character on Drawn Together, but he's, well, nothing like any of the characters in my comic. So at least I'm acquitted of precognitive plagiarism on that count.

(I'm plagiarizing the term "precognitive plagiarism," by the way, from Arthur C. Clarke, who worried that people would assume that he stole the ending of 3001 from the movie "Independence Day.")

And It's Walky! is over. How sad.

Okay, folks, it's time for the Second Occasional RandomScribe MessagePool! (Henceforth known as the SORSMP.) That's right, you leave your guesses as to how many messages will be stuffed in my inbox when I return, and the person with the closest guess gets a nifty gift sketch of a subject of his or her choice! (Within reason.) The twist? This time, I'm going to be gone for a whole month! Well, close enough, anyway. I leave on Monday (that's July 19 for the calendar-impaired) and won't be back until August 14, so aim your guesses high: we're talking triple digits, folks! Or at least I pray we are. If I get back and have to slog through over a thousand messages, I'm going to cry.

Incidentally, I still owe Alex and Rosie their gift sketches. If you want to cash in on those, you two, talk to me once I get back! I can't get started until you tell me what to draw.

And hey, maybe I'll draw something while I'm gone! ...but don't count on it. *scampers off*

Thought I'd do another little contest thingy, since nobody was able to solve my word puzzle... fortunately, this time around the process is much easier. ^^

Here's the plan. Starting Sunday I'm going to be away from my computer for a while. To enter the contest, simply post a reply to this entry guessing how many messages I'll have in my dA inbox when I get back on Saturday. The person with the closest guess gets a drawing of a subject of their choice. Simple enough, no?

I'd like to give you a range to base your guesses around, but the truth is I don't know how many messages I might get. Sometimes I'll go for a couple of days without anything, and then someone on my watchlist will go and upload a whole roll of film. So instead I'll give you this week's RandomScribe Watchlist Deviant... *drum roll*

Man, did Sondheim know what he was talking about: if it's not one thing, it's another! Now that I suddenly have enough time to seriously work on art, my computer decides to have a complete meltdown. This is the computer with PhotoShop Elements, the tablet, all my works in progress, and my scripts for comics, so it's kind of not good. Thankfully, it looks like something that can be fixed without losing any data, but until then I might have to resort to drawing stuff on paper and scanning it... if I can ever get that darn scanner to work.

I received a couple of pieces of art this week, in case you didn't notice them in my Favorites section. The first , a gift, is a painting by ~fleshpeeler of my character Salgrus and ~ aphrodite0666's character (named Aphrodite, unsurprisingly) in a scene from an RP at the Freelance Keep. The second is ~sniper3's half of our art trade: a picture of my lizardfolk character Makhai, who will appear in And Cut! if I ever get around to drawing it. >.>

I didn't get any art done this week (See? What'd I tell you about May?), so instead I'm going to say a bunch of other random stuff to make this week seem more eventful than it really was.

First off, sometime during the week I hit 1,000 pageviews! *dances* Also, I got another two devStalkers, which makes me very happy--now I have so many that they don't all appear on my main page! (To paraphrase Kafka from David Ives's "Words, Words, Words": It's the only way we know they're watching. We perform, we upload deviations, we type another journal entry--and a comment appears. At least it's a sign that somebody out there is paying attention.)

Also, I really like dA's new scrapbook feature. It's really ingenious, in a way--it improves the quality of deviations on the browsing pages not by imposing some arbitrary standard on everyone but by allowing each person to set their own standards. I approve. *stamp* The new today page is also worth a look, if you haven't already seen it. The only other change I've noticed is that clicking on a deviant's name now takes you directly to their gallery, although the avatar icon still links you to their main page. Still not sure whether this is a good thing or not, but at least it's nothing major.

Finally, this week's Random Spotlighted Person Whose Gallery You Should Really Look At is... *drum roll*

~Merrwizard and his fascinating photo-manipulations! My personal favorite of his so far is Special Delivery--if you're a fan of any Quentin Tarantino movies, you'll find it has sort of a familiar feel. He doesn't have way too many deviations just yet, so you have no excuse not to go look at them all! Go!

Is that all? (Did you dance? Was he charming? They say that he's charming.) Yeah... I guess that's all. Till next time! *dashes off to STUDY!*

...a month which is about to start very soon. God help us.

So! I finally uploaded something! That brings me up to a grand total of 24 deviations, or one full gallery page. Unless, of course, you set your browser to view a different number of deviations at a time, in which case you're weird.

I don't have anything in the works just now, but I have a few ideas for drawings that I might start soon... not to mention the comic itself. (I'm going to stick with "And Cut!" as the title, by the way, since everyone seemed to like it.)
Okay, time to get that crazy April Fools' journal off my front page. And trust me, I've really learned my lesson this time. I thought it was funny at the time, but now I realize I crossed some sort of line there. I guess I just sort of assumed that 1) nobody would read it anyway and 2) nobody would take anything they read seriously on April Fools' Day (if it's any consolation, I got tricked within a minute of waking up yesterday). And look at it this way: April 1st is the one day of the year where it's okay for me to be a little mean for my own amusement. Someone as pathologically nice as I am occasionally needs that kind of catharsis. You can thank me when I don't suddenly snap and go on a bloody rampage ten years from now. ^^ And thank you just for caring; it's good to know people appreciate my art, even though that was the wrong way to go about finding that out. *hugs you all* In summary: toying with people's emotions is bad. Next year, I'll just draw a picture of my characters doing something silly.

But you have to admit, I got you pretty good.

I didn't get any art finished this week, but I hope to get some work done on that this weekend. I've also started learning Flash at school, and good grief is it ever FUN! For one thing, the vectorization means that I can draw really good-looking cartoons even with a mouse. It's really amazing. With enough time and effort, I might even be able to throw together a couple quick animations. Also, I've talked to ~ sniper3 about our art trade, so I should be able to get a start on that this weekend. Now all I need to do is figure out what to have him draw... >.>
*sighs*

Hey, everyone. This is kinda hard for me to talk about, but it needs to be said... you see, I haven't gotten any work done on my art this week--in a long time, actually. I just haven't been inspired to draw, and have been disappointed with what I have produced lately. I haven't told anyone, but it's really starting to depress me... and that's why I've decided it's for the best if I leave dA and give up on the art thing for good. I mean, it's not bringing me any satisfaction anymore, and if I'm honest with myself I probably won't be able to make a living drawing cartoons, so what's the point? I'm just wasting my time.

So I'd like to thank you all for your support during my short stay here at deviantArt. It's been grand knowing you. Fare thee well!

May the wind be always at your back,

I've reached a decision of sorts on the matter of webcomic hosting. I think I'll post the black-and-white comics here on dA to maybe get some more people interested, and then post them on Drunk Duck once they're colored. All that remains now is to actually start drawing. *sighs*

Art progress: the picture I mentioned I was working on last week is now about halfway done. And ~sniper3 still hasn't contacted me about our art trade... Snipey, where are you? My window of increased free time is rapidly approaching its end...

In other news, I seem to be the only one of my group of friends who hasn't posted one of those journal entries where you answer a huge list of personal questions. O.o

And this week's RandomScribe Deviant Spotlight winner is...

~Volkai! He hasn't amassed a very large gallery as of yet, but what's there is definitely worth a look. Many thanks for your plentiful comments and advice, Volkai! ^^

Okay, calling this art-related is stretching it a bit, but I couldn't resist sharing it with all of you. You see, I recently learned an interesting secret about newspapers, and today I decided to try it out for myself. So let's take a look at today's Arizona Republic (those of you also living in Arizona may follow along at home).

Okay, on the front page we have: an inside look at a hostage situation in an Arizona prison that resulted in a 15-day standoff, an article about a church trial that acquitted an openly gay Methodist pastor, a photograph of angry war demonstrators in Madrid, a human-interest piece about Arizonans spreading their loved ones' ashes in unusual places, and an article reporting that the Pakistani army may not have cornered Osama bin Laden or his lieutenant after all.

Now here's the secret: as any good newspaper editor knows, the headlines of every front page, when read in a counterclockwise fashion, should contain a limerick. So...

The standoff went on fifteen days,
They're clearing a pastor who's gay,
There's war demonstrations,
Creative cremations,
And bin Laden is still far away!

My Dilemma

And so I take my next step down the slippery slope of blogdom. Still, I can avoid compromising at least some of my principles by keeping this journal free of any personal stuff. Art-related news only. After all, that’s what you’re here for... right?

Anyways, my dilemma is this: if and when I start working on it, where should I host my comic strip? I’ve come up with a number of possibilities:

o Geocities and the like. I’m not willing (or able) to pay for web hosting for a comic at this point, but it would be easy to get a homepage on Geocities, as I already have a Yahoo account. I’d have to learn HTML, of course, but I don’t think that’ll be a problem. There are some other downsides, though—those pop-up ads, for one thing, and the limit on disk space: assuming an average file size of about 250 kb, I’d hit 15 megabytes after 60 comics—less than a year if I update twice a week. So I don’t know if it would be a very good long-term plan.

o KeenSpace. It’s free, it’s well-known, it has provisions for automatic updating and that nifty little navigation buttons and calendar. However, the servers are crash-prone and it’s apparently rather hard to use—~ amberfoxwing and ~ArekuWargTamer (authors of Kajekyuu) and ~kheetor84 (author of Across the Pond) all abandoned KS in favor of other sites. So again, I don’t know.

o Drunk Duck. Another free webcomic hosting site. It’s mostly an unknown at this point, since I don’t read any comics on it as of just yet (get working on Kajekyuu, you two!). However, I have been told it’s easier to use than KeenSpace. There’s also a commenting system automatically built in, but I figure I can get a forum at Talk About Comics wherever I end up, so that’s not really an issue.

o deviantArt. Surprisingly, dA didn’t occur to me as a viable place to host a webcomic until ~fleshpeeler (author of Phoenix Incarnate) elected to do so. And indeed, there are many advantages: uploading images is a breeze, my devstalkers would be automatically notified whenever I update, and I might attract a few more readers from people just browsing the site. And again, there’s a built-in venue for discussion. However, because I obviously can’t edit the site itself, putting a comic on dA would sort of limit the extent to which the page would really be “mine.” That’s really the only thing making me hesitate, but to me it’s a pretty big deal.

So anyway, I’d like to hear your opinions on this—that’s why I caved and decided to put up a journal entry, after all. To quote the Baker, “Any help at all...”

In other news, I’ve got one picture currently in progress, but don’t hold your breath—I’ve only drawn one of the eight characters in it so far, and that took me all of yesterday afternoon. It’s sad how perfectionistic I get when using my tablet, and half of the time I’m not as satisfied with the end result as I am with the stuff I draw by hand. Sigh. I’ve also got an art trade with ~sniper3 in the works, but he’s been busy and has yet to contact me about it. On a related note, the Infinite Art Trade is still in the conceptual phase at this point, but thank you for your interest.

And now, because I haven’t plugged my friends’ artwork enough yet, here’s the Random Deviant Spotlight of the Week, lovingly selected from my friends list by my calculator’s random-number function. This week’s winner is...

~silvermoonlight55555! Her poems are short in length and long in meaning. Be sure to take some time to reflect after reading them—there’s much more than meets the eye. And, as always, don’t forget to comment!

Well, that about wraps it up for now. Until next time! *dashes off to measure his ankles*
