I've hit the point in my artistic development where I don't know whether to take the next step forward or not, and I really need all the advice I can get. I've been given SO MUCH drawing time over this free Thanksgiving week, so I've been experimenting a little with some of my character designs. My goal has always been to become toonier and more freestyle with my drawings, but things seriously slowed down around 8th grade when I learned to draw people... Yeah, its pretty pathetic, but I only started to draw people after 8th grade, so I've been treading new ground for some time now, and its been a great struggle learning what I can and can't do. Proportions of the face... body... etc... *shudder* Difficult!

So here I am now, discovering those awkward years of sketchbooks, and finding all the drawings I thought looked good at the time, and, well, being mortified. They look AWFUL. Its so frustrating, learning something new, because you're only looking through YOUR eyes, so what looks great for you, might be a complete lie. That's why I need your help. I want to experiment more with shapes, I want really abstract designs, I don't want to design people who are so completely average looking that you'll never recognize them. Example? I'm a great fan of Tim Schafer, ever looked up his work? Psychonauts... Brutal Legend... GRIM FANDANGO... THAT'S what I'm going for!

I just keep asking myself; Am I ready? Should I be venturing out to make designs where I hardly ever even consider proportions, and being at the risk of losing all that I've worked up for? I mean, I've achieved this state, what if I get too used to my new approach? And yes, I DO do figure drawing, I draw from life, I know realism, real proportions, etc. I still think cartooning is on a totally different end of the scale than that. I feel like the answer is painfully obvious, but I'm still being held back. I don't know... I'm just... Apprehensive...

So hey, I'm back and totally (not) ready for school. Yeah, I don't want to do my summer art projects at ALL. D< I think I have most of my stuff ready, but I'm still doing last minute stuff. I think instead I'll draw some stuff for funsies :] Because I've been deprived of that for the majority of the summer. Mneh.

Man, I totally wasn't prepared to write a journal today, hahaha I just wanted to tell you guys that I was back! So um, does anyone want to hear my crazy dream last night? Figure I'll throw that in here so this isn't a complete waste of your time.

So I was driving down this road, it was night and I had no idea where I was going, but that was most definitely NOT stopping me. Also, I was swerving all around the place and probably not going the speed limit, then all of a sudden this mob of people wearing roller skates start jaywalking out of nowhere. NOWHERE. Seriously, they just appeared out of thin air. (either that or I just fail at driving... which is weird because I can't drive yet) I stop the car and just sit there in frustration and confusion, because at that point I realized I didn't really know where I was going. Eventually, some of the people made a gap for me to drive through, and I made it to this large plaza area, where there were MORE rollerskating people, and I had to get out of the car. By that point I was so mad, that I just ran out of the car with my skateboard (wait, what? I don't skateboard either :/ ) and into the crowd, yelling at them and telling them I was in a hurry. Some dude actually stopped and was like "well if you're in such a hurry, go to that skateboarding park over there" *points over yonder* and LO AND BEHOLD there's suddenly a skateboarding park. I get to the skateboarding park, and I guess I start skateboarding until I run into this random door on the side of one of the rings. Face first D: The door slightly opens, I turn around and see the mob of roller skating people looking furious at me (note to self: don't open doors in front of sk8er peeps) so I immediately dive into this special door thing to get away from them. Once I'm in there, it's like freaking anime cartoon land or something, and I'm surrounded by the newer cast of Pokemon. I don't really know their names other than Ash, but I'm guessing one of them was... Mmmmmay? Well anyway, they accused me of breaking the door, and that I was going to let the Lickitounge out if I didn't help them fix it. Their idea of fixing it was to order all of their Pokemon to bombard the door with special attacks. I remember a Squirtle and maybe a Charmander water gunning/flamethrowing it, during which the room started flooding with water (at that point I guess I was a spectator or something, because I'm pretty sure I wasn't a part of that) and Team Rocket comes in. It gets a bit vague here, but I remember Meowth riding a Magikarp and yelling at everyone, then one of the Squirtles turns around and shoots him with water, which sends him flying against this wall with the Magikarp breaking the impact. There was blood everywhere. After that, it was like he had some kinda curse on him, which started making him really flat.(e.g. Parappa style) Then the dream kinda skipped a bit, and it ended up with Team Rocket sitting on this cliff thing surrounded by water and James is crying like mad. Also he was trying to take his shirt off. Meowth's looking at his claws and he says something along the lines of "James, I can't see you behind my really flat claws!". Then James just looks at him and is all like "IS THAT ALL YOU CAN THINK OF RIGHT NOW!?" (still crying) "EXPECTO PETROLEUM!" (yes, seriously) then he starts shreiking these inaudible spell names, over and over and over. I woke up and realized it was my dog barking outside.

BACK HOME TODAY! (actually yesterday)



I've now realized I take a huge, abnormal amount of pride in my state and nowhere else seems to please me as much as it. Sure, it's nice to visit elsewhere, but nothing is cooler than Texas. NOTHING. SOOOOO GLAD TO BE BACK.

In other news, I've missed my friends more than I ever have before. Don't really know what brought that feeling on as hard as it did, but I swear, if I don't see yall soon, all Hell will break loose D: And call me cold-hearted, but I generally don't miss people. I'm the type who lives in the moment, and things like this normally don't phaze me, so when I say I miss yall, I MEAN IT.

So my experience at this Summer Art School was amazing. I KNOW I have improved, and I've been in dire need of artistic discipline for a very long time. Man, they had me arting so hard for those 5 weeks @_@ I'm not sure if I'll post any of my work here unless it's in popular demand though, majority of it is a bunch of naked people, and the fact that this gallery is all cartoony and... well I'm pretty sure yall would be unpleasantly surprised to see naked people in my gallery without prior warning. Also, sorry for the flaky, not-so-responsive activity I've had going on for all this time. I didn't have much time to be on the internet, but I wanted to get on here, so if you're wondering why I had time to comment on certain things, and not others untill MUCH later, that's why. Sorry again for the confusion.

The good news is that I'm amazing at school, so this isn't an acedemic thing, I'm actually at an ART summmer school, and it's really fancy and swell, and I'm sure I'll have a great time! I've just got a lot of work to do @_@ So while I DO have internet access, I probably won't use it as much due to my schedule, so sorry guys. This is not supposed to be an emo journal, just wanna face a few truths here, so pretend we're at a conference or like... I'm in an incredibly chipper mood while reading this out to yall or something. Be creative!

I've realized that I no longer really care about updating, browsing, even coming online this site in the first place, so I'm going to take a break.(not sure how long I'll be gone, or even if I ever return thoughIprobablywillheh) I kinda came to this conclusion when I thought back to when this was the most exciting reason to be on the internet, and now its just so... mundane. Bleh. That's not cool. So maybe in the event I do return it'll be FUN and HAPPY TIME and all that good stuff.

Don't take this the wrong way though, I always enjoy the artwork here, and am in no way tired of seeing any of yalls work (in fact, I'll totally miss it) but I'm more concerned about myself at the moment.

ON A SIDE NOTE, if any of yall have MSN, IM, or YIM, GIMME GIMME GIMME! I would love to keep in touch with youz peeps.

Contradicting that last statement, I've finally come up with a word that fits this condition I've had for the last few years, and I'm very ashamed to admit I have it. Apparently I'm a sociophobe. This is another reason I'm leaving this place. I need to concentrate more on my friends irl than here. 1) I stand cross-legged.

2) I hold pencils "incorrectly". Normally I wouldn't believe that, but my finger is a bit deformed because of this, so uh, pretty sure I'm holding it incorrectly.

4) I'm bi-polar, so I switch moods very easily AND FAST (some of you may not know this; I try to hide it)

5) I'm hyper-sensitive to smell

6) I've secretly ALWAYS wanted to become a voice actor, or at least give it a shot. I'm almost as interested in it as I am with art, but I don't believe that job will ever be "for me".

7) I can lick my elbow (even without pulling on my arm)

NO I AM NOT KIDDING. Everybody denies that, and then I prove them wrong. I'm just awesome y'know?

8) For the longest time, I've wanted to go back in time and see myself when I was younger... mainly so I could stop myself from doing stupid things or teach myself something I should have known back then, instead of too late. Other things too, but you get the idea. Then again, I'm sure everybody's thought this at least once, but probably not as wishfully and urgently as I have.

If any of you were curious about the last journal, our 14-year old daschund, Winger, passed away D: God, I miss that dog. I'd had her all her life, named her, based a character off her even. The worst part was I had to go to school the day she was put down, so I had to go through the whole day knowing that during some point while I was away, she was going to be given that inevitable shot to end her misery. I think I had a breakdown almost every period.

But I'm not here to mope. I can now go on without crying when I think about her, and the good news is now we have 2 new puppies and they're ADORABLE. GUH! I think I'll upload some pictures of them sometime, but I'm probably going to wait a week so I can be a bit more desciptive about them... We haven't even given them names yet, so I'm up for suggestions

On a side note, I'm doing the OC Appreciation Month thingamabob! So yeah! Expect APPRECIATION!

I joined here many years back on a different account, and over time I was finding more and more people from my school here joining just to stalk their friends. So here's the deal. I know the basics of *pay me and I'll draw for you*, but now that I'm seriously thinking about starting up the gig, I wanna be as prepared as I can be.

This is what I want from you:

*Generally commissions range from about $5-$20, and some people (pompous or just highly talented) jack it up to maybe $100... but what would be a good starting price? What would you be willing to pay for my art, and those who DO do commissions... What price did you start at?

*I'm thinking the medias I'll be doing are Traditional: Inked B&W with shading, Inked and fully coloured/Digital: Inked and fully coloured. Any of those do you think should be excluded? Or suggestions on something that should be included?

*Tips and hints of things to stay away from and be cautioned by would be nice. Help out your n00bish friend :]

Here are the updated rules and info as to what's all going on.

Draw your character in Christmas clothing singing a Christmas carol and post it. (if you do not have a character you may draw yourself or just a random person)

I will choose the carol and assign you the verse of the song you are to include in your deviation.

Be sure and include a link to this journal in your deviation description. We'd like as many people as possible to spread the Christmas cheer!

We're not aiming for perfection here, all I ask for is a SKETCH. Remember, Christmas is peeking around the corner, and I'd really like to have all submissions done before then.

Still not too late to hop on the Carol Train! If the song ends, we'll do a REPRISE!

So with my group of buddies here on DA, I'd start the chain of sketching one of my characters in a Christmassy getup, with a few lines from a Christmas carol and post it. Then, I'd pass it on to whoever else decided to join in (given someone else has commented in this journal saying they'll do it) and eventually when the carol is done, we'll post it as one big collage of our characters singing a Christmas carol 8D

Haha, well I think it'd be pretty cool, and this doesn't mean you have to finish the drawing and colour it, sketches ARE FINE. I'd like to give this a shot, so hey,

Anyway, here's a question for you guys...
I know I fill up this entire gallery with fanart. I mean, I'm free to do whatever I want, right? Yeah, I know half of yall watch me because I submit art related to whatever it is you like at the time, but who here would like to see and learn more about my original characters? I thought I'd give a quickie update on my life 8D Why not, right? My friends just updated their pages--> PEER PRESSURE PLZ?

About the art: I've been lazy. LAZY LAZY LAZY and I have no excuses whatsoever. Sorry about all that. I'm still doing them, when I get around to it of course, but expect other updates not involving your request pretty darn soon.

Instead, you're probably going to see plenty of fanart, most likely involving Rayman. Yeah, Rayman fever hits again, WOOHOO!! I'd go on about it, but I guess I'll just save that for the next update.

BUT HERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS! For all those Animal Crossing fans out there, you'll know what I'm talking about. So dad, mom and I went to Fry's to go pick up the new Kung-Fu Panda movie ( ), and after checking out I was looking at the gumball-styled vending machines. Yeah, I know they're cheap and all, but every so often I find some pretty darn cool things in there. I once got a Spyro action figure and a Marving the Martian cell chain. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. Anywho, they had AC cell chains there, and I JUST HAD TO try for one. Only problem was that they were for a dollar, and I'M CHEAP, and I totally didn't want to go home with a crappy character...
BUT I PUT IT IN THERE ANYWAY.

OMG.

K.K. SLIDER, BABY! My life is complete now, THERE IS NO COOLER CHARACTER ON THAT GAME THAN K.K. SLIDER.
Now I just gotta figure out where to put him... Hmm...

Next time I'll figure out something more interesting to tell you guys. All I have really left to say is that I've been pretty darn bored lately. TALK TO ME ON IM PLZ GUYS. Or whenever... But high chances are you'll find me online

I'd like you to consider this an educational lecture on a popular subject most people like to throw at us cartoonists.

"WHY CAN'T CARTOONS BE MORE REALISTIC?","THIS DISNEY MOVIE ISN'T HISTORICLY ACCURATE OR 100% TRUE TO THE BOOK, THEREFORE IT IS BAD"

Honestly people? Do you really expect that people are going to be as interested in a movie or cartoon that is told EXACTLY as the original? No, that's boring. Incredibly boring. The whole point of a cartoon or an animated feature is to tell a story in a comedic, entertaining way, and sometimes to do so, you must take libreties. Parts will be left out to make room for other NEW ideas, to keep the whole plot fresh and exciting. You don't like that. GO READ THE BOOK. THAT'S WHY IT'S THERE. Let's take Hercules for example... My cousin once made a comment about how they never showed any of Zeus' other children (and we all know he had babies with like... everybody in Greece xD) and implied that Hercules was his only child, but think about it, really. Wouldn't that get confusing and take away part of the emotional factor when Hercules is kidnapped and cannot come back to the gods? You think: "Oh no, Zeus' only child, I feel so bad for him!", and not "Oh, he's got plenty of kids to spare..." She also made a comment about how Acelies(sp?) eventually recovered from his little "accident" and how they should have mentioned that in the movie. Well, that created plot issues. Think about it. Phil made a point that since Acelies was one of his biggest failures, he didn't want Hercules to end up the same. If he had pointed out the recovery, wouldn't that be kind of a bad example? It doesn't create the same feeling at all.

And how about cartoon antics/physics? The whole purpose of cartoons is to entertain you, and you absolutely CANNOT afford to be realistic. Nobody will want to watch Woody Woodpecker get his taxes done... Cartoons are a caricature of life in itself, EVERYTHING is emphasized, EVERYTHING is taken to the extreme, and yet, in a way, it's all so believable. Cartoons have created that sort of atmosphere about themselves, and it seems nowadays we just can't appreciate that.

I could go on, but I believe I've made my point. I hope the majority of you will at least take this into consideration and tell this to the next person who gives you such a naieve comment.

First off, is C. H. Greenbalt, the creator behind the new, poplular show on Cartoon Network, "Chowder". [link]

While the featured stills and model sheets are not all to impressive by themselves, he sets this "behind the scenes" type mood that makes everything seem more interesting. It has always intrigued me what goes on in the company itself (which I believe is a general comment, as most people probably feel that way too), but this man has such confidence in his team and overall production, that it gives you a new respect for the show. As great as the show is in itself, reading this man's comments gives me an all-new respect for Chowder.

Fans of Ratchet and Clank, if not Insomniac games in general should get a kick out of this one: [link] , this is the blog of "Dave" and "Greg" (whom I still have yet to figure out the last names to) who obvoiusly work at Insomniac as concept and character design artists.

Some of the work featured here you might have seen from the "unlockables" in previous games, however, there is plenty of personal work and also some never before seen concepts that for whatever reason, never made it into the "unlockable" section to their games. It's nice to know what came to their mind when creating these peices, etc, etc. Overall, they've both got innovating styles and ideas that should not go unchecked. In fact, I believe they'd still hold your interest even if you aren't a fan of the Ratchet series, or for any Insomniac game for that matter. Their style is so unique that it will hold your interst either way.

Next would be Scott Underwood, a former storyboard artist to the show "Ed Edd 'n Eddy" on Cartoon Network: [link]

Most definately one of my favorite blogs I've found yet, although the last one I'll list on here most definately holds the top spot, but I'll get to that later. It's nice to see that people have a completely different style outside of the show they work on, and it just pains me to see those who can't seem to develop one by themselves. People like that really shoot down their future. But I'm getting off-subject. Here's a man you can't take seriously, and it's great really, since I don't ever have to take full concentration to understand the point he's getting across (which completely contradicts what I'm going to say later, but you gotta enjoy different things at different times) He's got a good sense of humor...if not slightly disturbing, but all in all I like hearing what he's got to say. Somehow, I'd almost say his artwork really speaks for itself. I haven't been presented with something this...different in ages. I particuarly like the monsters and strange animals he draws, but in general I can only describe his style as "lumpy" and most definately "loose" yet comes together very solid. This guy has experience! I can't even begin to explain how much this guy can hold my interst, it's just unnatural! Upon discovering his page, my first thought was "-GROAN- Look at the size of that scroll bar!" but after reading some of his lectures and evaluations, you begin to discover the knowledge and experience this guy has with cartoons. This guy knows what he's talking about! What really gets me though, is his utter hatred for the whole "modern look" thing going on, you know, the flat-styled cartoons nowadays? Yeah, and he goes into detail about this stuff too, which gives me just Nth respect for him, because it's always nice to have an elaborate reason to hate something :] Oh man, JUST GO THERE, if you plan on visiting ANY of these blogs, GO TO HIS. It's not about the art, it's about the information. I've learned so much just reading a few pages from him. He's worth your time, GO NOW!

So hey guys, it's time for an angry journal...

And let it be known that I normally wouldn't do this, as it's pretty lame to vent online, but then again, yall would probably find out either way, and this is stuff that I will most likely not tell to your face, so here goes...

Why is it that people MUST have a problem with me? It seems that everthing I do wrong, every embarassing moment, strange quirks about myself MUST be brought up at the most inapropriate times? And by inapropriate, I mean undetected. It seems all my friends need to do this to me at least 2 times, and for what reason I have no idea. You like to depress and humiliate me during even the most peaceful of conversations... "OH BY THE WAY, RAY, I REALLY HATED THIS AND THAT 10 YEARS AGO..." etc, etc. What do you want me to say? I could apologize, but it's not like I HAVEN'T been doing that before. DAMMIT! I really hate you guys sometimes! What sucks even more is that I know this is a generalization on ALL OF MY FIRENDS, I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO SINGLE ANYONE OUT!! Half of this might even be my problem, because I try so hard to forget things like this. I try and tell myself that I shouldn't worry about the things you guys say to me, because I know you do it all the time, but there's this small nagging voice in the back of my head that tells me it's just wrong to be treated this way. At times I even want to just march right over to your house, call you, do whatever it takes to scream at you and tell you how mad I really am, but what's the point? YOU'LL FIND SOME WAY TO BLACKMAIL ME AND CRUSH MY SELF-ESTEEM. YET AGIAN. So I keep my peace. I'd rather have you think of and remember me as your happy and forgiveful friend. I try hard guys, I really do.

So there you go. Long story short, it hurts me so incredibly much that you guys can take so much joy in plowing down my conscience into the insignificant bug that I probably am in any normal conversation for the past 10 or so years. Let it be known that I'd love to keep my friendship with all of you -without your constant SHIT-

So despite the ecstasy, there are a few things I'd like to say, mainly about the art. I've decided most of what I'm going to submit here will be fanart, and little personal art. I hope I am not dissapointing a few of you, but really, I'd like to keep most of my personal works to myself and the people I actually know. Yes, I am a greedy bastard, BUT I STILL LOVE YOU GUYS. Which is another thing, for those shy people who aren't going to ask unless they are 100% sure it's okay, I AM OPEN FOR REQUESTS AND TRADES. A few months ago I left Deviantart for a somewhat long break, hoping to improve on my style, technique and whatnot, and well, here I am. I have no idea whatsoever if I have actually improved on my art, but I do know that I love being here, and I just had to come back... LIKE, NOW. Please, I am hoping for a lot of feedback on the art I will be submitting, especially because of my absence. I love hearing what you have to say about my stuff.
