speaking of rats, and alice, and. well alice is pregnant. hee. im excited.
the daddy's a big fatty fat lard of a rat named zuzu. hes a blue hooded with a mismarked saddle. he's so FAT
you wouldnt even BELIEVE how fat
but anyway. emily and i are excited about alice and the little rat babies well have soon. shes due somewhere around the eighth of july.
she's already SLIGHTLY fatter, and shes groomed around her nipples some (rats do that when theyre mentally prepared to care for a litter) so thats a good sign. i hope the litters not too big though. and that there wont be any complications.
in the mean time, we need to plan possible homes out too. emily and i are keeping two each (she has dibs on two females, and i have dibs on a male and a female.. not to breed, but the girl to keep alice company and the male to bond with myself).. and we have somebody else lined up for at least two females. maybe we can con her into getting more, hee.
so far everybody wants GIRL rats though. which might be bad for our boys. they need a nice home too.
and theres no way im selling any of them to a pet store, theyll just end up rat food that way ;; id feel terrible. heyre alice's offspring, and im going to work with socializing them well early on, so thats wasted effort on both her and my part. but i might be selling the rats for five bucks each, hee, because im mean. but that's CHEAP for a rat. and if theyre all in good health and they have good temperaments, then.. well. you get might point. though i also dont really like the idea of depersonalizing them, because theyre meant to be companions, not objects. somehow it seems like selling them for a price would be treating them like things rather than living, breathing animals. but emily and i WILL need the money, and itll pobably all go towards supporting our own rats anyway!
OUTSIDE of that i need to get a spare cage tooo. so i can seperate the rats once they get to be six weeks old, and then so i can keep my male rat that i keep in it after that. definitely not a good idea to keep him with alice and her daughter.

of course ive no idea how many shell have. but signs of pregnancy early ususally indicate a larger litter, and what with her tummy, its possible. but rats can have anywhere between four and twenty-five ratlets per litter.. though the averate is twelve.
twelve would be a perfect number, hopefully shell have around there.

OKAY enough about that.

umm, drivers training starts the ninth of july.

I'm thinking I might start up offering comissions once summer starts. I'm sculpting out some plans for it still, but regardless, I need the money and I'm too young to get an actual job (I can't drive yet, anyway). Of course, I will be doing driver's training, and I'll also be more active socially this year. But I need the experience, and I think it'll help me grow as well as help me feel a little more confident once I get to the point where I CAN be legally employed.
I've decided that, if I do comissions, I'll only take one at a time.. I'm a lot more motivated to work if I don't have a huge list weighing down on me, so it works better.
I'll probably leave the price up for the commissioner, if they'd be comfortable doing so, so that they don't end up feeling ripped off.. I'll probably arrange it so that they pay half before and half after if it'd be easy enough so they can decide whether or not they feel satisfied with the finished product before they pay full. I'll also show them the work a it progresses, too, of course, and maybe if I feel motivated enough or if I feel the need I'll draw several sketches and see which they like best. And, of course, I'd send the finished product to them.
I've also got a deal in mind: I'm thinking I'll offer it that the comissioner pays full-price for their first comission, and any additional order alongside it will be half-off their original price. This only goes for each order, though.. say a client orders one thing for full-price and then orders another comission a month later - they'll have to pay full-price for that one, too. The way I'm thinking I'll arrange it is that they can order one comission and an additional one with it at the same time.

How's all this sounding to you guys? I know people won't be very interested, but those who are, I'd be willing to serve once summer starts up. The first person to talk to me about it will be the first in line.

Otherwise.. eh, my art will be stagnated this week what with exams and all, but I've been drawing, I guess. I'm also getting my hair cut once school ends! AND I'll be ungrounded. I struck a deal with my dad that said if I wait to get it cut until school ends, my groundation time would be cut in half. He only made the deal because he wants to hold off his daughter looking like a dyke for as long as he can, especially with me being in school where people would see me all the time, but hey.. who can argue.

I'm contemplating making another account alongside this one for my scraps.. since my sketches are doodles are doubly over half of my gallery here on DA and the works I'm usually most satisfied with, it seems kind of like an appealing idea. Especially since it's usually scraps I want critique and things on.. but everybody knows the scraps section of people's galleries gets no attention. Of course, I'd still post my more polished works up on this account.
What do you guys think I should do?


I guess I'm going to go find a way to entertain myself now.

But I figured I'd update you guys anyway. Also, excuse the crappiness of it, particularly the lineart. This is the first time I've attempted to line a scanned picture on the computer, sooo yeah.

I typed up some shit for her, since I haven't gotten around to finishing that yet! Even though it's pretty self-explanitory.


Nicotine is about the size of a red fox, and has the general build of a rat. It actually is genderless, but I typically will use a "she" pronoun for Nicotine because it is representative of myself.
Nicotine has thin, soft, short fur that's pretty much a dull light brown in color. Her skin is a purple-ish color, some parts with black specks (inner ears, tongue, fingers and toes, tip of tail). She's got a "tuft" of hair on her head, and you can do pretty much whatever you like with that, just as long as it's the same length. She's also got a sort of mane that goes down the center of her neck to about the small of her back. The beginning of her tail also has more fur than the rest of her, unlike the rest of her fur-to-skin body parts like her hands and ears. Her tail is relatively long and thick, and it's not prehensile. It can wrap around things, but not for the sake of picking it up (unless she feels like being silly) or holding her weight.
Nicotine has a feminine build but a boyish face, and large ears. Porportionately, her hands and feet are a bit large. Her feet are just like a rat's - as are her hands, but she's got an opposable thumb. The widest part of her body is her hips - the thinnest point is her waist. She's got narrow shoulders, so her figure is basically straight down and then curved at the hips. The most muscular part of her is her arms, and really, that's the only part of her that's somewhat toned. Otherwise, she's got a relatively thin and slender build. Her ribs will typically be somewhat visible, as will her hip bones.
She has a high brow, and her nose has a notch. Her chin is somewhat prominent and she has bags under her eyes, and the fur around them is /slightly/ darker than the rest of her hair. The fur on her cheeks will typically come to a point. Nicotine's teeth aren't perfectly white - not extremely yellow, but they're not perfectly white. She does /not/ have the teeth of a rat - her teeth are closer to canine in structure. Just as well, the whites of her eyes are yellow. Her iris is a blue-green-gray color, the same as mine. I don't draw her with pupils or a shine in her eye, simply as a way of personalizing her character. She's got long whiskers, and I always draw the three whisker-spots on her muzzle.
The only added feature about Nicotine is the stitches on her shoulders.
Nicotine can stand upright or walk on all fours, whatever is most comfortable for her at any given time. Typically, she'll be walking upright. Her body language is reserved and typically closed in, unless she's feeling confident. he has the tendency to rock back and forth. Most of the time, her smile won't meet her eyes unless she's truly, sincerely happy.
So really, Nicotine's pretty simplistic and plain. Her design is symmetrical and she doesn't really have any out-there markings or colors. All she's got different about her is the fact she's not a real species and she's got stitches on her shoulders.

i watched it today. the film, i mean.

it was great. wonderfully gory and creepy and all things majestic in that sense.

i was a bit surprised at how little pyramid head there was - only because people just GUSH over him, though. i would've thought, with the large quantities of such gushing, that there'd've been more to.. gush over. personally i haven't say i liked any of the monsters worse or better, iit was all great.

i wasn't disappointed at all, but i might have been had i played the games first - who knows. i hope to manage to someday, assuming i can get the first and also not be too much of a coward. oh my my.

as far as school goes? its fine. passing with half-decent grades is proving to be much easier that i'd thought, it's almost surprising. can't keep up in art class - im too slow of a worker and she gives us one day to work on things, generally. its alright i guess though, she pulled me aside and told me that "sicne i was more detailed than the rest of the class" it'd be alright if i took some extra time to get things done. now i just need to find the motivation to do it. blah blah blah. oh, and i weaseled my way out of a science test with extra credit. ugh. i think he would've let me slip anyway, being he assignent i didn't do was an assignment a sub gave us and it'd been due at the end of class, so it was confusing and whatnot.

otherwise? nothings been going on. i think i' going to go sleep now or something.

3rd period - HS Computers with Mr. Buchinger.
4th period - HS Choir with Mr. Cook.
5th period - Physical science with Mr. Lueder.
6th period - HS Art with Ms. Malik.
7th period - US History with Mr. MacDonald.

*grins* I'm pretty content with my schedule. I was surprised to see I'd gotten art as a class, but it was a pleasant surprise - I think next semester it switches to photography. Even better! Computers is a semester class, too, but I don't know what I have next semester. *shrugs* I'm not concerned about it, though.

So, yeah. The life of a freshman. I'm looking forward to it. The fact I'm a freshman is insignificant, being that there's no transition here because middle and high school are housed in the same building, but it's just that it's school. I'm eager to learn this year.

on another note.. my cat returned home a two ort hree days ago from having disappeared for about two weeks. fine, just lazy and skinnier than ever. i can actually feel his hipbones now, which is.. the weirdest thing ever, especially if you'd ever picked up this cat. may be fattening up some now, though. oh, and he's got a bit of a limp, but mother supposes he had that before he left anyway.

and irrelevantly, has anybody noticed the movies produced this year? i actually find it comical. the majority of the comedy movies i've seen advertised are the computer-generated animation variety, and usually with animals as main characters. i wonder if hand-drawn animation is even going to be attempted anymore.

otherwise, nothing to say. finally got my sleeping turned around, for the.. what, fourth or something time this summer? gee.

edit// I may have come to a conclusion with my fursona that's appealing to me as of yet. It may well be temporary, but it seems ideal to me.
basically, the idea is that I'm keeping the one I've always had, but I'm renovating her. First of all, a change in coloration is in order, as suggested by =Somewhatcrazy. I'll probably make her fur a lighter shade of gray with pastel markings; that's less loud and vibrant, I guess. Other than the tail and stitches on her head, she's being completely wiped out - all of her accessories and things are basically gone, right now, until I figure it out and whatnot.
So she's plain.

What else I love is that sometimes people say they feel alone or abandoned because everybody leaves them in the dust and then they go somewhere with their friends after saying two days before they'd been hoping to have you all to themselves that particular day.


I could bitch a lot more but I'm not going to, but I am in a pretty bad mood, and I guess this time I won't even bother telling myself it's stupid to put myself in one and yes it is self-induced and I acknowledge that because that's apparently numbing myself and that's supposed to be bad or something.

Otherwise, I want to ask, is there anybody around here who might be able to tell if a rat's pregnant? I think mine /might/ be, but I'm not certain, I'm not very experienced with rats. I know she hasn't gone into heat a single time for the twenty or so days I've had her, and I know a rat's gestation ranges from roughly twenty to twenty-seven days, but I unno, things vary a lot for rats.

Oh yeah. the rat I'm talking about is Alli, or formerly, Stockholm. Short for Allisyn.

So yeah, if anybody here has any knwoledge or experience at all on rats, I can link you to a journal entry I'd made on it at livejournal (albeit having typed it horribly). Any help is appreciated.

yesterday he was very inactive and slept a lot, so he stayed in his cage the majority of the day. today i noticed he looks a fair deal thinner - i can see the definition of his rib cage, where it ends, and his leg. he wasnt like that before, though nobody else seems to notice the change, i do. he's also very lethargic, and when he has energy it's very short-lived. i dont think he's eating much, but then again he's been sleeping a lot so he probably hasnt had time to.

my parents think he's just warmed up to us, but if rats seem this miserable when they've warmed up to you, then i unno. maybe he was better off at the pet store.

he could be lonely, i guess that could cause some physiological illness type symptoms, but i unno. another thing ive noticed, between weight loss and lethargy, is he's got rattley breathing sometimes. or, did, either it's receeded he's been sleeping too much for me to tell. he'd also been sneezing, as well. now his teeth are chattering, and his breathing appears to be labored, but maybe that's because he's lost weight?
from what i know, virtually all rats have mycoplasma, a respiratory disease. most of the time it should be inactive, and it's more violent in some than in others. it could be a form of this, but there's no discharge of any sort. he hasn't been awake enough for me to take note of his appetite, really. we ggave him several treats today, a number of times, and he didn't seem too put off on them.

rats are very stoic, so they dont show symptoms of illness until its serious. i mentioned bringing him to the vet to my mother, and she'd rather not "waste" the money. she also tried to say he was fine (and followed up with "he hasn't been throwing up or had diahrrea"; rats can't regurgitate, and i havent read anything about diahrrea in them save for when they're stressed out), but ive read up on this, and i spend a considerable amount of time with him. she hasnt done either. i think hes far from fine. i would pay myself for the visit to the vet, id rather pay thirty to fourty dollars for a check up and find nothing's wrong than not and have him die.
the problem is, the vet is closed until monday, and within that time i dont doubt that if there is something wrong, stockholm won't quite live until then without treatment.

i dont know what it is, it could be a parasite or it could by mycoplasma. it could be something i dont know about. i keep his cage fairly clean, and ive full-out cleaned it twice these eight days i've had him. i keep him in my room, mostly, where nobody smokes, and when i take him out im sure to keep him away from any smoke there might be. those irritate mycoplasma, so thats why i mention it.

that being said, i know a fair deal about rats, but im not experienced in caring for them. stockholm's the first who i've properly taken care of (for eight days, haha), being that the two we had when i was a little kid were mistreated because my mom doesnt know much on them and i was too little to do much anyhow. if anybody else is experienced in rats, or at least knowledgable, by some kind of odd coincidence, some advice would be greatly appreciated. im really worried about him, so anything helps.

He'd really quite adorable, he's so curious and it's all.. aw. <3 He's not shy around people at all, though he is a bit with his eating. he's dark brown (either that's his real color or it's just because he's young, I'm not sure which) with some white on his belly. I named him Stockholm.

I introduced him to his surroundings a small bit today, and right now he's sleeping with his.. head shoved into the towel that's serving as his bed right now. Strange. We've made some small progress on his eating already, he ate some taco meat (only a small amount, he's not getting meat regularly. I fon't think it's good for rats in excess?) while he was in my hand and he watched me the entire time. maybe if he sees I'm giving him food and that I'm not going hurt him he'll start to trust me. I hope so. Tomorrow I'm going to try giving him a soft food like yogurt on a spoon, so he can't try to run away with it.
The only thing is, I'm not sure if he knows his actual food is even food at all, and I'm afraid he won't eat it. I want to teach him to trust us and be sociable while he's young, but I don't want him to refuse to eat his actual diet because I made him so used to treats and things. Hm. maybe once I trust-train him I'll just leave the snacks out completely so he'll eat his actual food.
But then there's litterbox training (and yes it's even possible to litterbox-train a rat!).. *sighs* maybe I should invest in a bit more new food and mix it together or.. something. I'll look up on it.
... until then I'm open to advice. >>;
Oh, and I helped him figure out how to drink from his water bottle, cause he didn't get it at first apparently and he seemed really thirsty when I offered him a drop of water on my finger. So, yes. joy. <3 anybody who thinks rats are stupid are very incorrect.

I've taken consideration into developing a new style, as depicted above. You only get a vague idea of it by the sketches (I'll do some more later; haven't felt up to it today), but you get the just of it. I guess it's somewhat akin to realism, only more.. relaxed? It's closer to realism than the style I've been using, anyway.

I've been kind of chewing on the fact people have a very personalized libido, recently. Everybody has something different about them, say how soft or sharp the lines of their faces are, or how defined the features are. This opens up a huge array of differences in people, and a huge array of differences in how we express things. We do so unkowingly through body language and whatnot, it's all very complicated.. though that's not why I'm posting this. what I'm getting to is that I have a very.. limiting, for lack of better word, style. Underdeveloped, perhaps. I draw the same facial shape, the same nose (triangle thing? *laughs* fake-anime thing goin' on there..).. my style is very recycling, and there's not a variety of differentiating features, primarily facial. This is what I'd like to work on- this is why I'd like to develope a new style, so you can /tell/ my characters apart, so you can see them more intimately than I've allowed otherwise. I want you to see them as I do, or more closely to such, with the shape of their eyes, the curve of their smile, how defined their features are. I want you to be able to see how they express things, as characters, and how it varies from "person" to fictional "person." Maybe then I can establish a stronger connection than I have been- that's one of the perspectives of art, to some people, isn't it? To communicate a feeling, maybe a view or a collection of thoughts to other people.

As for why I'm posting this, well, I'm curious as to what your insight may be. Is it good or bad, what would you be interested in seeing? Plainly to say I'm not asking you to direct me in what I do with my so-called art, I'll do what I feel makes me happiest (because otherwise it wouldn't completely be my own, now would it?), but I'm interested in some feedback, maybe some criticism or advice or opinions. Anything you'd like to say, I'm interested in hearing, maybe you've got an idea about some areas I may need improvement. I'm open to pretty much anything.
