Good whichever time of the day it is for you. I'm typing this out on my parents' computer because for the next week I'm on mid-term break from my Diploma of Graphic Design course. *lets out sigh of relief* Not that I'm not enjoying school or anything like that, I'm just worn out after non-stop designing and deadlines.
Amusingly enough, our teacher tried to interest us in considering the advanced design course by showing us the epic pieces of work by the advanced students. Apparently they also needed to churn them out in even less time than we'd had for the projects that had left us in a state of tired delirium

But I digress...

In my time off I'm planning on spending some time with my parents, playing with my camera again, upgrading my softwarez, hanging out with my brother, pwning some ps3, watching some frakking Battlestar Galactica, and getting a start on my next project... A box set, cases and book cover for the rumoured upcoming expansion to World of Warcraft, "Cataclysm". Since all I have to go on is a single word and a ton of speculation, I'll be building a set of designs based on what I'm expecting and/or would like the next instalment to introduce - the obligatory +10 level cap & new battlefield, Playable Goblins for each faction, a new hero class, southern seas areas, aquatic mounts (dolphins, sharks, pleiosaurs, orcas, zombie sharks...) and other goodness.

But first, how about I upload some of my latest work?

I haven't been very active lately, artistically or otherwise. I'll blame it on a punishing routine of school work, but other things have been occupying me too. Call it a lack of muse, or an inability to focus my creative forces, or a misaligned zen, it's a lethargy that's proving problematic...

On philosophy...
I find I've been taking a nihilistic view of the world a lot recently - frequently feeling that things don't really matter. But I've found some of Nietzsche's ideas to be particularly interesting. His thoughts of the "slave ethic" and criticisms of mob morality resonated with my own feelings on the matters well. Übermensch is a concept that really gets me - a feeling I often express is that humanity SHOULD be so much better than it is. We should be above poverty and genocide and paralyzed international authority and financial instability and environmental unsustainability. But we keep failing as people and individuals and as a species. Perhaps most importantly, are we failing to achieve Übermensch because of the mob mind?

On pop cultural observances...
I've recently seen a few movies. Fast and Furious (my brother's pick) was an unapologetically mindless and entertaining cops n robbers n boy-racers movie. X-men origins: Wolverine was a mix of the outstanding and the outstandingly mish-mashed. Starting from a stylish and gripping intro of wolvie and Sabretooth battling through a back-catalogue of American wars, it slowly devolved into half-sensible set-piecing and forced cameos. Like humanity in the shadow of Übermensch, Wolverine should be a lot better.

On current projects...
School is keeping me beyond busy. The inevitable last minute rush to print the projects, coupled with a constantly failing printer drives my class of stressed-out, over-caffeinated, hung-over late teens/early twenties insane. The resulting environment is not particularly conductive to creativity, but I am looking forward to getting a qualification I can be smug about. My current project is to write, illustrate and print a children's book. I thought the project would be fun, but my current creative block is making it rather awkward.

"No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise."
-Rorschach, Watchmen novel (1988)

So, I dressed up as everyone's favourite inkblot-mask-wearing psychopathic vigilante and waltzed off to the armageddon expo I was so unsure of. Here's my summary...

This was the first time I've ever cosplayed", and the reactions I got were generally very positive. Several watchmen fans wearing the comedian's blood-stained smiley badge (anyone know where I can get one of those?) and many others enjoyed seeing someone emulating a character they enjoy. One guy I talked to told me he'd made a rorschach costume too but didn't wear it because his parents were embarrassed

I must have posed for at least ten photos in the first three hours. Anyone who's met me in RL knows how shy I am in person, so it felt bizarre getting so much attention. It was nice to entertain people though

At 12:00 my girlfriend had finished shopping and went home since she was now bored. I changed out of my costume and washed the ink that had leaked from my mask off my face. Now out of character, I went to the dA stand and hung out with ~spikeyheadedfreak as he drew "a demon being impaled from behind" as per request of a rather violent 12 year old.

I set up to sell some 6x4 prints of some of my best works. At just $1 a piece (most likely the cheapest thing being sold at armageddon) and with some quite genuine interest from the patrons, I was very disappointed that not one of the 100 prints I had made got sold. In hindsight, I should have kept with the theme of the event and made more sci-fi and fantasy art to sell, but I was hoping to add some variety to the dA stall, and represent some photography and digital art beside the drawing, anime, inks and paints of the others.

On the topic of selling art, I saw some neat New Zealand comics and publishers but didn't really discuss the industry or art form with them. I also noticed that mass-produced artwork posters were selling for two-thirds of the price it would cost for an average artist to merely get their work printed. If anyone knows how Victoria Frances gets such unashamedly dirt-cheap publishing, I'd be interested to know.

My failures as a professional artist aside, I also hung out with =HyperCannon (who was rather amused by my costume) watched Hulk vs Thor (not that I care much for either character) played Secret Agent Clank (typically awkward as any PSP game), killzone 2 (fairly enjoyable, but not the halo-killer Sony is desperately hoping it to be), and finally failed epically on drums for Guitar Hero World Tour (essentially "Band Hero" with its multiple instruments).

I must say that overall I was a little disappointed by this year's event. As I mentioned in my previous journal, many of the attractions didn't appeal to me, none of the celebrity or panel guests interested me, I had no playing cards for the competitions (and didn't find out about a "sealed deck provided" contest until too late), and the films and anime being played were average at best. Fortunately, it was not as over-crowded as last year, but neither was it as eventful or enjoyable.

My final message to the organisers: try the food you give away in the goodie bags before you endorse it. That instant macaroni is atrocious.

I just need to customise that iconic mask...

Cosplay aside, I'll see if I can hang with the dA stall.
I'm unsure about this year's armageddon expo convention. I've attended Armageddon for the past two years and enjoyed both quite a lot, but this year I'm having trouble deciding on whether to go or not. So here's a list of pros and cons, explaining my mixed feelings about the upcoming event...

pro:
I enjoyed it the last two times.
It's a good chance to make contacts in the nerd industry.
I have the rare opportunity to hang out with some of my dA friends in RL.
I could do with unwinding a bit.

Cons:
I have little spare money, and Armageddon involves a lot of stalls selling cool - but expensive - stuff, on top of the entry fee.
I'm rather behind in my course work and should use the weekend to try and catch up.
I don't have any cosplay stuff (I would love to go as Rorschach)
I don't have any art stuff to sell or pitch.
many of the attractions don't appeal to me. (wrestling? seriously? SRSLY!?)
I'm not particularly interested in the celebrity/panel guests.
I don't have any trading cards for the trading card events. (I used to have a fairly decent yugioh deck, but a former friend misplaced my cards...)

So that leaves me wondering how I should spend this weekend - at Armageddon or studying, doing housework, restocking my pantry, and getting a bit of rest. Any comments?

Although my prefix is yet to change from = to ~ for some reason. In all honesty though, dA's subs aren't really worth what they charge, for the amount I actually use them.

The internet blackout NZ has been a success, helping convince the government to postpone and rework a controversial internet copywrong law. Unfortunately, their reworking is currently being done by groups that don't represent the ISPs, users, or many of the artists at risk from this law...

That aside, Because the price of our democracy is eternal vigilance, I'd like to thank the creative freedom foundation and it's allies, as well as everyone who joined in on the blackout:

Finally, who else is completely psyched about WATCHMEN? The movie is promising a lot with the hyper-stylised trailers and legendary source material. I was hooked on the Graphic novel from the moment I read the unflinchingly brutal and nihilistic world view, but am yet to save up enough to buy a copy (which works out as half my weekly allowance, or a week's rent).

Anyhow, I should get back to Captain Kiwi-ing...

Join the black out protest against it!">

In protest of the latest assault on our rights in the name of copyright, I have blacked out my avatar and gallery. This reflects the law, which calls for guilt on accusation of online copyright infringements, and demands ISPs to sever the internet connections of this law's victims.

Consider this: a school loses its vital internet access due to students sharing music. How about this: a virus or worm infects a computer and uses its internet access to distribute copyrighted material illegally - until the hapless user is axed for no fault of their own (maybe besides having inadequate malware protection). Perhaps an online business is accused of using unauthorised copyrighted images on their website (perhaps as a visual for a product they're selling). Instantly, the website would be torn down and the business would be ruined.

Innocent until proven guilty is a sacred ideal for the pursuit of justice. The failure of big content to adapt to changing attitudes, business models and technologies is a pitiful excuse for undermining one of the most essential rights of a civilisation.

Abusive copyright? Not in my name

Heading 3

CSS Journal created by *bazzabent

News

Since half the images on the journal CSS I had been using for the last year and a half are broken, I figured it was time for a new one. ~Touch-and-Go's scratched and splattered dA appealed to me for some reason, so here it is.

January has been a mix of hits and misses for me. After struggling with paper-shuffing, countless forms, several meetings, a ton of mail correspondence and two months of wasted time, I finally got the local welfare/student finance bureaucracy to give me some long-needed support. For those unfamiliar with my situation, here's a rundown:

RK vs WINZ/Studylink
last november, my community college classes for english, photography, film and graphic design eneded. As such, my entitlement to a student allowance ended until my next course begins in early February. I had been unable to find a job immediately after school finished, but in the middle of applying for next years allowance, student loan and general paper-shuffling for 2009's finance, I stumbled across what looked like adequate employment until then.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get information about how much the job (general assistance in a kennel out of town) would be paying me or how much work I'd be doing, so I needed to delay my paperwork for the welfare office until I could be sure of what to actually tell them about my "employment status".

A month rolled by, my benefits ended completely, and the training day for the job arrived. Murphy's law dictated that when I woke up that morning I was sick and could barely move. After leaving a message explaining I'd be absent and they should get back to me to organise a new date, nothing happened. After a dozen more attempts to reach them, I just accepted the fact they'd ditched me.

So here I was, dropped by the job I'd been pinning my hopes on and was unable to finish my welfare applications over, essentially broke and with no income. I asked the welfare office what kind of assistance I could get until my course started, and they buried me under more forms and red tape, and told me to get back to them after the christmas break. Needless to say my family got second-hand and bargain bin gifts this festive season.

Several forms, letters, phone calls and such later, I had an appointment with a bureaucrat o discuss my situation. She fed me the same "fill in these forms" bullshit, said that they can't do anything for me until after their two-week stand-down period, and told me that they won't even help me pay my rent until I get an eviction notice. On top of that, sitting in her air-conditioned office and typing on a computer more modern than the ones I had at school, she had the nerve to tell me that I should go "get a job".

Two weeks later, and still completely broke with no sign of any assistance from the welfare gurus, I called once more to see what was going on... They wanted me to fill in more forms and send in more ID and assorted information and to book another appointment... But eventually they realised that between two previous years I had used their services, three recent meetings, seven assorted forms and letters, numerous pieces of identification and correspondence... I had long since provided them with every intimate detail they needed about my life, living expenses, living situation, plans for further study, vain attempts to find work, and all the numbers and barcodes they use to depersonalise their clients. Thus I can happily report that I can now continue to feed and house myself. For now anyway...

I received my school results summary for last year the other day. I already had my results for the majority of my work, since it was marked internally, but the results I was awaiting were for my level 3 design folio. As the deadlines approached, I sacrificed my film project and then my photography folio in order to get this finished and polished as well as I could manage. Ultimately, I managed to get a "merit" mark, akin to a B. I was hoping for better, but it's still a good result, and tops off last year's study well. Here's looking forward to my Diploma in Computer Graphic Design course.

Until then, I seem to have invented a new drink. What I'm entitling a "Canadian Cow-tipper" is made by shaking a shot of vodka with half a shot of maple syrup and a cup of milk through ice. Serve on the rocks or straight up, as per your tastes (I prefer on the rocks) <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/d/drunk.gif" width="25" height="28"...

Requests will be processed on a "first come, first served" basis.

Pricing is approximated based on New Zealand minimum wage for the reasonable amount of time a work would take, plus a little extra for any further resources I may need to provide (eg, items purchased to photograph or third-party stock used). Payment will be via paypal. I will provide a heavily watermarked and low-resolution copy of the work as a sample before requesting payment, then provide the full product upon receiving payment.

What kind of artist Am I?
I am an experienced art student with training in photography and graphic design. I have a 10mp Canon Powershot A640 camera which takes some of the best photos you can get from a non SLR. I use GIMP for photo retouching, photo-manipulation, and other design tasks, and also use Inkscape for vector editing.

What can I provide?

Stock Photography: Request anything within reason and I'll create a set of high-resolution shots for you to use as you wish. $10+(75% cost of items) for full usage rights.
[link]

Photo Retouching: Provide a photo and I can fix imperfections like red eyes, add simple effects such as sepia tones, turn a photo into pop-art, or simply improve the lighting and colours. $5.
[link]

Photo Editing: A step up from a retouch, a photo edit involves taking a photo and adding or subtracting entire elements. Was someone missing when you took that family photograph? I can bring them there for as little as $10
[link]

Photo-manipulation: This covers taking several photos and creating a work of art from them. Want an amusing shot of yourself as a superhero, or a spectacular image that could represent an entire ideal? $20-$40 depending on complexity, number of images involved and whether I need to outsource stock images.
[link]

Logo Design: I can provide simple to moderate logotypes and typography, conceptualisation and branding services. $10 - $40 depending on complexity, number of designs required and number of concepts.
[link]

Poster/cover design: I can work with images you provide to create poster or cover artwork in a style of your choice. $10 - $30
[link]

Anything else: I will consider any other kind of request as long as it is within the realm of photography or graphic design.
[link]

What wont I do?
I will not work on anything that is hateful, slanderous, pornographic, discriminatory or otherwise unethical. I will however support freedom of speech and peaceful protest. For example - There is a difference between saying you disagree with a country's foreign policies and saying citizens of that country deserve a gruesome death.

What can you do with your commissioned work?
This depends on what the work is, but generally you can do anything except claim the work was created by you.

What do I do with finished commissions? Generally I would upload it to my deviantART page and licence it "Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative-works", making it free to share as long as I'm credited and it isn't edited. If you would like it to be released into the public domain or kept private instead, that isn't a problem.

Any other notes?
I am only human - I can't guarantee my work will be finished as quickly as you might like, but I can promise to deliver a product that is as good as my skills will allow.

Prices are estimates ONLY. They might swing wildly in either direction due to pricing of additional materials, extra time required or further requests during the conceptual stages. But I promise I will be fair with my pricing and never ask for more than 133% of the estimated price.

Contacting me
Leave a message on this journal, note me, E-mail me, or call/text my cellphone: (+64) 027 636 4454

Thanks, I'm looking forward to working with you.
-Andrew, "RealmKnight"

My Deviations
<d...

As he said in his own words, not everyone will agree with his decisions and he will make mistakes, but Barack Obama is the symbol and harbinger of the change the US and the world has needed for a long time.

Unfortunately for NZ however, we ultimately decided the change we wanted was "change for the hell of it" rather than "change we need", and our leadership took a sad swing to the right-wing.

I'll be analysing a few issues that led to this and expressing my concerns for what this might lead to.

John Key gained quick momentum by attacking Labour's failed or unpopular policies, while leaching off to their successes by saying "we're gonna keep this Labour policy even though we voted and campaigned against it". In doing so he undermined Labour's achievements and downplayed National's moves against these steps forward. He also struck a nerve with the fact that most of NZ was bored and/or sick of Helen Clark, and proceeded to attack her over every issue big and small while refusing to be transparent over his own agenda - lashing out at a journalist who held his party accountable for the worrying statements made to party supporters behind closed doors.

Labour ran what had to be one of the worst political campaigns I have ever seen, claiming that we can "trust" Helen in spite of the numerous scandals she has been involved in (speed-gate, painter-gate, corn-gate etc). I personally think Helen should have stood down as PM candidate and let Phill Goff become the new face of Labour BEFORE she killed the election for her party.

Fresh leadership for Labour and a new coalition with the Greens and the Maori party is EXACTLY the change New Zealand needed in my opinion. Unfortunately, neither Labour nor the Maori party were able to deliver this change, and the majority of people who wanted something new from the government were left with only one option - the patently two-faced banker John Key.

What I expect of him is to run the country and government as if it's a corporation instead of a civil service. His reaction to the World Economic Crisis™ is to give the rich people more tax cuts, tell the working class to work harder, and to "encourage" beneficiaries to find work with financial blackmail. I simply don't see how this is fair when cronies like him are the reason the world is in this mess.

I can't say I'm looking forward to the next three years of government. National offers nothing to the people who need the governments help, and I'm not ashamed to admit - nor should I be - that this includes myself. I'm currently unemployed and looking for a summer/part-time job to help me live while I study a diploma of Computer Graphic Design next year. National wants to make it possible for employers to fire their employees WITHOUT REASON after three months. This is fucking outrageous. There is NO EXCUSE for denying someone their employment and financial well-being when they have done nothing wrong in their work. Existing laws about firing employees who are lousy workers or put the company into disrepute are more than all a boss needs to dispatch non-constructive employees - this policy is nothing more than a resounding "fuck you" to people looking to get into the workforce, and provides another reason for unemployment beneficiaries to be reluctant to try and get back to working.

I wonder - can we fire John in three months once New Zealand realises the mistake it made?

My Deviations

My Store

My Faves

My Wishlist

My Journal

My Stamps

Note Me

E-mail me

Journal Layout and CSS
Made by Lily A. I have experienced roughly a quarter of my life expectancy, and have all the world ahead of me.

This seemed as good a time as I'd ever get to make a list of things to aim for in my life. "Things to do before I die", so to speak.

In other news, the '08 school year is nearly over. I've shelved my film project to work on my more important Graphic design and Photography portfolios. I have a ton of photos and designs to share, but can't spare the time or effort to upload them to dA when I need to finish the final pieces to the highest quality I can muster. But in another week, I'll begin a binge of uploading all my latest designs, photos and perhaps a few pieces of stock film.

The US election is also today. I endorse Obama and would encourage everyone to vote for a man who transcends race, religion, socio-economics and political compasses, encourages diplomacy, social fairness, economic stability and cultural sensitivity.

This being said, I don't want anyone to be lulled into thinking Obama is perfect. He looks the other way while Israeli forces commit war-crimes against Palestinian civilians, supports the corrupt mega-corporatism that funded his massively expensive campaign, and is willing to give money culled from public tax to wealthy christian groups. However, so does McCain.

But after the horrors of eight years of Bush/Cheney, Here's to a lighter shade of grey

As for the NZ elections, it's coming down to whether people are sick of Helen Clark enough to kick her out and let John Key in - even though he's a douche. At least if he gets in he'll do something about New Zealand's worthless broadband

My Deviations

My Store

My Faves

My Wishlist

My Journal

My Stamps

Note Me

E-mail me

Journal Layout and CSS
Made by Lily A.

Starting off with good positive stuff, I'm proud to say I've been accepted into Natcoll Design Technology institute to study towards a diploma in computer graphic design next year. I'm looking forward to learning all I can from one of the most cutting-edge schools in the country, and not having to worry about interest on the $6-7k+ student loan I'll need to get is a blessing.

The NZ Green party (who I support ) are committed to doing things to help out the future of NZ citizenry like making buses more convenient and affordable, student allowances available to everyone, keeping student loans interest-free, and raising the minimum wage.

I've submitted my entry into the "Epic logo, epic challenge" contest, and have my fingers crossed that my design will make a splash. I'm also rather bemused at dA using a competition to create their next logo. It's a nice way to say deviantART is a community when something as important as its very image is open to its members to create. Logistically, it also saves the dA staff a LOT of money and time for them to invest elsewhere. How does running a competition and paying a whopping 2.5 grand to the winner SAVE them time and money? Quite simply, the prize money is equal to paying just the top 100 designers in the community at US minimum wage of ~$7 an hour to come up with concepts and designs in a time frame of 4-5 hours. Instead, they've got hundreds to potentially thousands (based on the article having over 2,500 so far) of deviants working for free, using as much of their own time as they feel necessary, sometimes over three working days of work. All this for a one-time payment of $2,500 to a single designer who crafts the winning design.

It's official - Sarah Palin is the next George Bush in terms of being a joke of a politician. I'm glad to see the relatively sane Obama getting some headway in the polls. In all honesty, I'm not in any way a fan of the democrat party - they're just the only viable alternative to republican. I wish the swing and independent voters could give some power to third-party and independent politicians, as the "red vs blue" situation doesn't seem to be solving many problems - instead of making fair compromises, the right vs center approach is instead polarising - preferring to push whichever standpoint forms the majority upon the rest of the population.

For example, in the case of gay marriage, instead of creating a fair compromise law for "civil unions" in order to give gays the legal rights of marriage without the religious connotations that make the issue so divisive, one side wants to ammend the constitution to prevent same-gendered relationships from being legally binding, while the other wants to force people who are ridiculously comfortable with the idea to "put up with it". I believe in full rights for everyone, but pushing a hot potato into a climate that isn't as open-minded as it should be could potentially make matters worse.

Back to New Zealand, what we are witnessing is a break-down of the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system that ensures minor parties who hold the sway in governments can have their voices and the voices of their voters counted. National holds a majority on their own according to polls, and if this continues through to the election, any legislation they want to pass could get through unopposed by any except the governor-general who needs to sign a law into power. This includes "hire and fire", "tax cuts for the rich", "sell kiwibank and other beloved state assets" and "borrow moar monies!". What is particularly worrying is how John Key AND Helen Clark boycotted a debate which included the minor parties, forcing the tv company to cancel it entirely and only go ahead with the head-to-head debate. Why are our leaders acting so undemocratic? Perhaps they want MMP to fail and NZ to become a polarised right vs center mess like the US? I certainly hope not.

<div...

Your friendly neighbourhood RealmKnight has recently misplaced his phone, so those of you who might want to text me will be getting a cold shoulder on my old number. I still hope to find it, along with the contact details of everyone I've known for the last four years, some photos I'd prefer to keep, my schedule for the next few weeks, and some neat downloads. However, I have been lent my brother's spare phone until I find mine or buy a new one.

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you'll likely see an ad for a survey about deviantART. I took the survey in the hopes of winning one of the non-iPod prizes... as well as demonstrating my democratic powers and freedom of speech over how I'd like this site to be run.

Simple questions like "how old are you?" (19) and "are you male or female?" (yes ) turned into questions about proposed partnerships with adobe and other computer and information industry megacorporations. I'm all for making software products better, but my concerns lie with the fact the survey marginalised other products, in particular the free or open-source ones. An example is the question about potentially integrating stock image and brush searches into Adobe Photo$hop - a great idea, but why didn't they ask if we'd like an identical feature in GIMP or Paint Shop Pro, which also feature prominent sub-sections in the stock area of dA?

What I'm concerned about is deviantART creating a bias towards any megacorp they partner with, or inheriting any of the major issues that have sprung up from the corporations' attempts to control their markets.

Being in bed with Micro$oft might result in hellish "IE-only" features of the site which would open users to a ton of security issues, while a partnership with crApple would inevitably cause an influx of DRM infected iJunk.
Google is generally one of the better info-tech megacorps, but they have issues with being censored by american copywrong laws, and being bullied into removing controversial material from blogger, youtube, google earth and google search.
Adobe create brilliant creative products, but they are also guilty of cash cowing by monopolising the digital creativity industry and charging horrendous prices for their software.

ALL of this is a potential problem for us as artists and fans of the free and largely open service deviantART provides. We all want people to enjoy our art and we all want to continue being able to explore our creativity in as wide a way as possible. This should include being able to enjoy features regardless of which software or OS we work with, and regardless of issues we might express in our art.

I for one hope that dA can aim for an unbiased and open art community - the way all art communities should be.

Time for some politicing, methinks...

<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/9...

Unfortunately, the majority of coverage isn't helpful to the ideals of democracy, ie the ability for everyone to contribute their fair opinion towards the way their government, and thus their country and their world, is run. Instead, we hear about who can't remember he owns seven houses and his mortal foe who might secretly be a muslim. Who's gaining runaway popularity just by whining about a prime minister we're sick of, and who's likely to win the latest season of politician idol?

What concerns me is how a candidate's image is more important than their policies, and their funding is more important than their credibility. It's times like these I feel it's obvious that a true democracy is impossible at best. However, a system of voting for people to vote for their own agendas is better than nothing at all. But I would like to stress the utmost importance of a citizen's responsibility to not only make the most of the power democracy gives them, but to take responsibility for their vote too by taking a short while to get to know the candidates - and something that's often overlooked: their policies.

John Key, the leader of the New Zealand opposition, is looking likely to become the first leader in a long time with a stand-alone majority in parliament. This means his team of centre-right businessmen can pass any law they want. These include: the "hire and fire" act, where an employer can fire an employee after three months of employment WITHOUT DUE REASON. the "copyright amendment act" which enables corporations to bully ISPs into removing content, ilegalises format-shifting of anything except music, and gives no "Fair use" clause for copyrighted work whatsoever - not even for educational, satirical, or derivative works. And "Tax cuts (for the rich)", which don't actually cut taxes unless you're earning more than the average wage.

As an art and technology student who has struggled both to find employment and to afford anything beyond rent for half a room and the cheapest instant noodles from Pak n Slave, all three of these policies are a slap in the face. I was lucky enough to gain employment at a local restaurant before "hire and fire" commences, but I wonder how many others in my situation might get the short end of the stick this law will create.

Most proposed tax cuts - and not only the ones in New Zealand - simply allow someone to earn more before their income tax rate increases. A good idea, except that the people who need the tax cuts most are students, the unemployed, single parents and the elderly. A better solution is to cut GST, thus making it easier for everyone to afford things.

Finally, over-zealous copyright. Copyright was invented to promote authoring by guaranteeing authors would be able to profit from their works. Unfortunately, today it has been hijacked by megacorporations. Not allowing students to learn from published works, or allowing artists such as DJs or pop-art to include pieces of other's work in their own, or even ripping a legitimately acquired copy of a movie so you can watch it on anything other than a dvd player - these are things that do not in any way prevent legitimate authors from making rightful profit from their work, so disguising an attack on our freedom to do these things under copyright legislation is little more than a lie.

Copywrong perhaps?

At any rate, I've currently pledged my support to the NZ Green Party. I am in no way whatsoever an environmentalist, but this party surprised me with the amount of proposed legislation I agree with. Higher minimum wage, reduced age to vote, reduced GST, open-source software for schools, fairer copyright laws and affordable healthcare are all things I support as matter of principle (as well as for my personal benefeit)

You're all free to vote for who you believe in, but make sure you know what you're getting yourself and your country and world into.

*-*-*

As a final distraction, okcupid.com has a politics test for summing up your political opinions into a political standpoint. I was described as a Socialist, with "a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and belief in economic fairness", and likened to (I believe) Hillary Clinton. I hope to emulate some aspects of the two in my year-end project for my film class as well, so I'm not just randomly blurting portmanteaus out, even though that can be funmusing...

Anyhow, deviantART has released an obviously unfinished version 6 onto the public with limited success. One of these limits seems to be that a good two thirds of the thumbnails I try to look at don't load. As someone who's currently scouring the stock image catalogue for suitable photos to use for my graphic design class, this is extremely frustrating. The worst thing about it is how it worked perfectly beforehand. The new browsing system is great, but when all you can browse is a screen of broken images it leaves a bad taste in this deviant's mouth. Sigh...

On to some more substantial(ish) musings, it has occurred to me that my pageview count is approaching 5,000 hits. It's no Tarantino, but I'm proud of what I'm working on <strike>and I'll try to get it uploaded here (and on youtube ) in a week or so once I've put the finishing touches on it.</strike>

EDIT: I've finished my film, a short symbolic journey through setbacks and perseverance through the metaphor of basketball. All I need is some advice on how to trim the 700mb finished product into something a little more web-friendly. My borrowed copy of Premiere Elements doesn't like me enough to let me use it's export features

I also have an invite to DA film to dish out to whomever I please. I'll try to be fair and give it to someone who's gonna use it well, so leave a comment and make your case.

Second, as a beta tester, I've enjoyed playing with the preview of the up and coming DA version 6. Like always, much of the changes come down to personal opinion as to whether they're a good or bad thing, but I like what I see overall. The only gripes I have are the lack of a lo-fi option (with low resolution and no javascript and flash) for those stuck with crappy computers and/or browsers, and how the new front page puts too much emphasis on popular and new deviations at the expense of the daily deviations and articles.

As for my real life, I've been keeping busy with a long search for the ideal accommodation and employment, and I'm on a roll with my school work. My first graphic design and photography assignments have nearly reached their final stage, waiting on little more than a new toner cartridge for the school art department, and I'm feeling quite confident for my next assignments - both portfolios.

Now, I'd like to end with something that I've been reflecting on lately. My gallery has everything except a common theme. And I'm quite happy having it that way. My art is a reflection of myself and my personality, so doing a bit of everything matches my life perfectly. Admiring everything from a sunset to a construct, and playing with photography, graphics and everything in between defines my artistic vision of experimentation, exploration and eclecticism. I might not get a million pageviews like someone who takes a hundred photos of water drops on flowers, or draws twenty characters from a popular anime/videogame, but I'm content staying true to myself.

Obamallama. As much as I enjoy some of the things I'm doing in school, I was getting pretty burned out towards the end of the term. So now I'm kicking back, sleeping in, kicking ass and chewing bubblegum . This break has given me time to sort and upload a bunch of deviations, as some may have noticed. I've been playing around with some designs and trying to get used to using Inkscape, as well as going through a process of trial and error to teach myself video editing in Adobe premiere. But in the meantime, there's still a bunch of photos for me to GIMP

This kitten apparently got so popular it ended up on the front page for a moment.

So, it turns out I'm not dead. Go figure. The last couple weeks have been hard to balance with deviantART, thanks to concerts, a devmeet, school, homework, dating, and bouts with a headcold and a flu. But without further ado, here's my obligatory journal post.

---

I'll start with the ROCK2WGTN concerts and the holiday I took around them. In a word – awesome! I got dressed in my bogan threads and had a fairly picture-perfect flight to the capital, where the concerts were being held. The first night, featuring Lordi, Alice Cooper, and KISS, was an experience to behold. Everything from waiting in line with tens of thousands of metalheads, to the sea of black that the stadium became after they entered was incredible. Seeing so many people in KISS make-up was especially interesting.

The concert began with the winners of a guitar solo competition ripping their guitars up to an amped audience. There was some real skill within these dudes, and their segment finished with the signature rock n roll finale of smashing a guitar.

The first major act, Lordi, were everything you'd expect from the monster-metal eurovision winners. Enjoyably gimmicky costumes and the pyromania of the frontman didn't detract from their rather decent hard rock at all, and culminated in a killer performance from the youngest headlining act.

Following Lordi was the first of the intermision acts, The Valves, who were completely lost amongst the jaw-dropping special effect show put on by Weta Workshop – zombie cheerleaders, firedancers... and the dragon. Three stories of lazer-eyed, growling, wing-flapping, head banging, smoke-breathing DRAGON. Let's call him Smaug...

The stand-out act for me was the jaw-dropping show put on next by mr Alice Cooper and his crew. With a commanding stage presence, the likes of which only four decades of the hardest rock could produce, there was not a single audience member not blown away completely. Everything from his voice- ripened with age like a fine wine- to his cane-twirling antics was an experience within itself. Props and performers were woven into his music with perfection, including the tossing of (I'll assume) faux pearl necklaces into the audience as he sung “Billion dollar baby”, the scattering of impaled dollar notes from a rapier sword, and a set of groupies with “Alice for president” signs as he belted out “Elected”.

During the middle of his set, he launced into an epic stage show operatic, blowing everyone all away. Somewhat reminiscent of the rock operas that Pink Floyd are famous for, Alice scorched through a performance of a non-stop operatic filled with an orgy of music and acting alike. Accompanied by an ensemble of actors, props and sets, the shock-rock story of a wife-beating, baby-killing, assylum-incarcerated madman was unleashed on a frenzied audience, ending with a mock hanging of our villan.

An extended version of “School's out for summer” worked into a stadium-shaking drum solo and the obligatory guitar show, while “No more mr nice guy” got the crowd going into a rave. His iconic anthem of &#147oison” was greeted by 30,000 cheering bogans, and his final departure call of introducing his partners in crime, “And of course... ME!”, ended any doubts of the power of the preceeding performance as the westpac arena exploded in cheering.

The next set of intermission was filled by a band called “The Symphony of Screams” and the aformentioned performance feast of cheerleaders in zombie make-up, dancers swinging flaming swords, hula-hoops and ropes around, and mr Smaug. A fairly decent band, but as with the Valves, they were undermined by the orgy of performance that was going on around them, and the fact that most punters chose this opportunity to take a break from the festivities to get food, water, booze, merch, and answer the call of nature.

Finally, the major act of the night got on stage. KISS are infamous for their iconic make-up, costumes, light shows, fireworks, stunts and stadium-rock anthems. It was everything you'd expect from a KISS concert, but it felt a little lacking somehow. There were many reasons for this – the main one being the audience, I'd say. Their amusing stage antics and simple sing-along rock anthems don't carry much effect if the audience is: exhausted from four hours of world-class music and performance, hungover from the cheap wine and beer they've been drinking since 5:30, completely blown away by the previous performance, cold from the bitter wellington southerly wind (I was wearing five layers and still felt chilly) and otherwise not in the mood for rock n rolling all night.

That said, they put on a decen...

I knew I was going to lose a lot of my spare time when I got back to my studies, but I still thought I'd be able to keep up with what was going on in the online world I'd engaged myself in to overcome my over-abundance of time and lack of a life to use it on. A neglected RP forum, a month's worth of new webcomics, articles, blogs and online news tidbits, many episodes of my favourite programmes to check out online, a WoW character who's been level 40 for far too long, and about 250 deviations and 50 comments later, I realise that was kinda silly. But reaching 3,000 pageviews sure is neat

That aside, having a life is fantastic. I'm learning a ton in my photography, film and graphic design classes, and carving my way through english towards the credits I need for university entrance. The people at my hostel are neat, and I've entered a great relationship with a girl from school.

I see that in the past while, DA has undergone some major changes. I've noticed DA has changed the programming of the popular deviations category in order to give popular deviations in all categories some limelight. This is a TREMENDOUS step in the right direction. All art styles should be appreciated on a site that is dedicated to almost every form of art imaginable. The collections system seems to have passed into general usage (correct me if I'm wrong) and I certainly like the feature and seeing it used on my art

A few more things I think DA needs however: First, a category dedicated for uploading music and audio - this is already done in the flash section, but a dedicated and organised musical section would be great for audio artists who otherwise have to go to the online quagmire we call myspace. Audio stock, free music, music presentations, dramatic readings, sound effects - these and more are all potentially great additions to the internet's largest art site.

Secondly, DA NEEDS a low-fi version. Flash and Java are great when they work, but if you've ever tried surfing this place with a crappy browser (IE, anyone?) or on a crappy computer, you are purely screwed. If google can make a html-only version of Gmail, why can't DA make a HTML-only alternative to the current set-up?

At any rate, DA and other online pursuits are on the backburner due to the fact I don't have particularly convenient internet access or much time to dedicate towards my online art gallery. I'll keep trying my best to upload stuff and keep track of my friends here though.

RK out...

EDIT: I forgot to mention, a certain RealmKnight found some cheap flights, accommodation, transport and so forth for this easter weekend. This is because the Deadlyish one will be attending The greatest rock event EVER!".

There aren't many movies I see that I an describe as an "experience", but this is one of them.

Some spoilers ahead so be warned:

"Shaky hands" always has it's critics, but the way it simulates the emotion of fear and confusion into the movie was well worth a minor headache. The filming technique in question really made me feel like I was almost part of what was happening, instead of merely watching what was being shown like in a normal movie.

I liked the characters enough, their experience felt believable for the most part (I'll get to this in a minute) and the story got across well. In-your-face product placement for NOKIA!!!! got on my nerves though.

Some parts didn't make much sense to me. The soldier letting three civilians run around a besieged, and supposedly locked down, city to save a woman who might not have even been alive? This was odd behaviour considering how soldiers would usually act in an attack event.

More odd behaviour is the looting scene - Cloverzilla is smashing your town apart and blowing shit up - the last thing on my mind would be nicking off with a stereo. Stealing a battery so you can contact your loved ones I'd endorse, but I think on guy had a PC under his arm - what the hell for?

The parasites were scary in the traditional "shit jumping out at you" sense, but I think they were a little under-utilised. Maybe it was for the better, but they just disappeared halfway through. I noticed Marlena (I think) grabbed a crowbar out of thin air to bash them with, but why didn't the protagonists arm themselves when they realised they had these monsters to deal with?

A fire axe also appeared out of thin air when they were attacked later on, but still - why didn't they all grab crowbars and other backyard weaponry in case they needed them? Hell, I know I would have.

As for the monster, it was a lot different from all the fake pictures I'd seen on the net, and overall a very interesting and frightening design. I went in expecting to see a few blurred shots and a leg or tail every now and then, but then BAM! You actually got to see the thing full-on multiple times. I'd describe it as a Tauroid meets Alien meets FFX's Sin.

Overall, I was really satisfied with the movie not giving away too much - or too little, something JJ Abrams is notorious for. Although I missed the thing you're supposed to look for at the end, but don't see because you don't know what you're looking for (it was something falling into the water behind Lily and Rob in the last part of the "taped over tape", I believe)

so I'd give it eight "taped over SD memory cards (another of the film's "eh!?" moments)" out of ten, and atypically hope for a sequel that can provide some more adventure, some more monster, and some more interesting new answers.

Features soon...

My Deviations

My Store

My Faves

My Wishlist

My...

It's been nearly a month since I've posted anything here, or even done much work on my art. A host of distractions are to blame, but mostly I just wasn't in the mood. Anyhow, my DA sub (donated by =yvanklestein) has run out, and annoyingly, I spent over an hour sorting my features around my favourites gallery with the beta-only "collections" feature, only for it to disappear when the sub ran out. <strike>I liked the features, but not quite enough to pay for them, so I wont be renewing it. There are other things I'd rather spend money on.</strike>

EDIT: Megathanks to for sponsoring my sub!

My World of Warcraft subscription has also ran out - expiring literally minutes after I got to level 40, bought my mount (Zombie horse! ) and started kicking some major ass with a new talent skill. I could have bought a game card and signed myself up for another couple months of MMO awesomeness, but I've got a real life that needs sorting... ish.

<strike>I've got myself a flat in Christchurch - nothing flash but the price is right, especially with unlimited broadband (hopefully at a decent speed).</strike> It turns out that the room I had found was double-booked, leaving me back on the search for somewhere to stay yet again.

I'll be moving in february, in time for the school year to begin. I honestly can't wait for school to start, I've been looking forward to playing with cameras and graphics for so long, and the next two and a half weeks can't go by fast enough.

I also finally got my family's computer all fixed. After the ordeal we went to in order to turn the hardware we had into a working machine again with a combination of old parts from my brother's machine and a few cheap new pieces, I had to deal with the following bullshit to get Windows XP working properly...

Install an ambiguously versioned Windows XP on the machine using the disk left over from my Laptop "repair"/fuckover (1 2 3 4 5). Realise the CD key on the PC wasn't working, and the ambiguous WinXP "non-edition" as I like to call it (which doesn't make it obvious to any degree whether it's home or pro edition) wasn't compatible with the XP Home single-machine product key I got with the PC. So I get my brother to send his copy of XP Home for me to use to reinstall XP. Again. After losing all the new programmes and files I'd just installed into the comp, I bang in the product key and get the worst response you can ever get from a piece of software: "call us"

The key I was using wouldn't activate XP, so I rang the Micro$oft telephone number and got an automated response. I usually don't mind automatic phones, but this one told me to input the numbers the activation software had spat at me. All seven lots of six digits - 42 all up, which was somewhat ominous. Anyone who's done phone banking or similar will know how much of a pain in the ass that kind of thing can be, but this was simply absurd. Then the prompt asked me if I was installing the XP on a new or old system. The tool I am, I figured that a reconstructed computer classified as "new system". Robobitch then told me in the most angry voice I've ever got from an auto-prompt "thankyou, GOODBYE!" and hung up!

Trying again, I bashed the numeric novel into my phone and this time told robobitch I was installing it on an old machine. Still determined to make me set a new record for number and ferocity of swears down a phoneline, the autoprompt claimed I had already used up my allocated number of machines on this key. Finally, I was allowed the option to be put through to a human who might actually understand my frustration and respon...

...to be jolly. I could be a grinch and go on about how I've had a lousy year or that things aren't really looking up much right now. But screw it - this is the one day that western culture puts aside for good things, so here goes.

I'm having perhaps too much fun on WoW, reaching lv29 last night. My guild are a great bunch - completely opposite of the elitist snobs I expected level 60/70s to be like. The staff of the Role-play forum I co-admin, Dark Forest, are busy reworking the system into even better shape and adding new features. I got a shiny new TV for Xmas to replace my broken old one.

Also, I've finished working with my brother to revive my PC, which was a task and a half that we justified by saying *deep breath* "using his old motherboard, getting a new case and power supply, getting a new graphics card that FITS his motherboard, and putting it all together after gutting the old computer of it's hard drive, memory card reader and DVD drive... is cheaper than getting a replacement motherboard". I'm sure glad I'm not doing computer hardware for a job like I was planning to this time last year.

So back to the topic at hand, I'd like to wish everyone happy holidays - including but not limited to: Christmas, boxing day, whit Monday, mother Theresa day, proclamation day, ascension day, emancipation day, armistice day, May day, and any others I've missed, and all the best for the new year.

So I went and bought World of Warcraft - $35 at Kmart, minus $30 of vouchers I got for my birthday last month (effectively $5 ). I know this game has quite the reputation for destroying social lives and so forth, but as I said on MSN, "I had no life BEFORE I started playing WoW". I believe it's the same as any hobby or activity that can cause addiction and other unhealthy habits. You just need to monitor your behaviour and how you're being affected by it, and if it's causing problems you cut back. Staying up to 3am gaming isn't healthy even if you're semi-nocturnal like me, so the solution is to resolve to quit at a more reasonable hour like 10.

Anyhow, my characters are Unraven, an undead rogue who serves as my main, and Kairado, a Tauren Druid who's more of an alt. Playing as this second character, it has occurred to me that the Tauren are a paradoxically anti-fauna race. "hey Kairado, go kill cougars and get me their teeth" "hey Kairado, I need this list of animal parts for my totem ceremony" "hey Kairado, the silvermanes are killing OUR animals - go kill THEM"... But woe befall the dwarf who feels like mining for a bit of copper

Warcrack aside, I've got my Christmas shopping sorted. I feel sorry for anyone who's experiencing the obligatory Christmas zerg rush, but I had no real problems. I'm pretty busy at the cafe with all the year-end functions and christmas parties they're doing, but that's what gets me money for next year. Fortunately I'm not like our chef who told me "I'm sick of ham!" after cooking her 30th

Stuff happens, stuff changes and stuff stuffs. I have an amount of unrelated stuff to mention, so here it is in no particular order:

We got a new kitten (photos coming soon). As sweet and cute and so on as Mandy is, it's weird getting something new shoved into your life literally days after something else is taken.

I'm downloading a free 10-day trial of WoW because Mr T told me to. It's been Downloading for about four days and is currently at 60% with the download speed slowed to a crawl - so by the time I get to play it my trial might have already run out. If not, I'm planning to go as a Forsaken (Zombie) Rogue. Any WoWers who might want to hang out with me (even for a short time) let me know what server you're on.

Today I enrolled for next year of school. I'll be studying Digital Photography, Motion Camera, and Graphic Design in Christchurch. I'll also be looking for a flat or other accommodation, and a new job next year. I'm obviously hoping for something related to photography, but I've got a whole bunch of thus far unused skills in other fields too.

Fingers crossed for next year, but first I need to suvive Christmas and the madness that brings

*update*
WoW finished downloading, and turns out that my 10 day trial already had six days used up... So I just made a new trial account to get the full benefit of "10 days" of WoW. I'm an undead Rogue named "Unraven" on the Silver Hand server if anyone wants to say hi. Level 6 FTW.

Life has it's ups and downs, and I think I just got hit by one of the latter. Work is really doing me in at the moment, and I had a rather bad day on sunday when the cafe was pushed beyond my ability to simultaneously wait tables and wash dishes. Another job I was hoping to apply for at a camera store has been taken. And to top everything off, my cat Leo died at barely a year old.

I haven't been sleeping well lately either, perhaps from stress, or maybe it's just summer's early sunrise kicking me out of dreamland out of sync with my preferred semi-nocturnal sleeping pattern. Either way, I've gone from being lethargic to being exhausted. Something I can look forward to is my brother visiting this weekend, though I'll be working through a decent portion of that visit. Sigh... enough angst, time for some features...

I'm back from my holiday to Palmerston North, and I had a blast. I've just dealt with the deluge of nearly 150 deviations, messages and notes that DA dumped on me while I was away, and I'm currently sorting through 1.2GB of photos of the six-day trip and a couple photo-shoots I had along the way.

I'm sure most people don't want all the boring details of my trip, but here's a quick summary. Flew to Palmerston North and hung out with my aunt's family and brother for a bit. Then went to the nearby town that my sweetie ~KasziahXoX lives. Hung out there for a bit, and went and saw some guy-fawkes fireworks and speedway racing back at PN. Went out for dinner for my birthday on the 4th, then again on the 5th (why not?).

On the 6th I caught up with =yvanklestein, grabbing some starbuck$ before he showed me a great little camera store he knew. Before I knew it, I was walking out with a shiny new Canon PowerShot A640 camera to replace my craptastic Megxon C430 so we then went for a photoshoot around the Palmerston North Square, and made the most of our equipment. Next day I took Kaz for a photo-shoot too, but that was cut short when I got rather sick. Finally, we packed everything up, I said a heavy-hearted goodbye to my girl, and my mother and I were back on the plane to Christchurch with some great memories and a gaping hole in our pockets.

The brutal simplicity of this piece is what really got to me. A fascinating thing about art is how sometimes it takes so little to make you ponder such a great amount, something this deviation did for me quite well.

The "Heart-shaped shadow in a book" picture is something of a cliché, but I enjoyed this one a lot with it's contrasts between copper coin, white page, black text, shadow and spotlight.

Righto. I've decided I'll keep on going with my features for a while and see if it goes anywhere. Whether or not I can promote some art I appreciate or not, I'll still come across some great art and maybe make some new friends in the process, so it's worth the time on my part. As for my own art, I think I've somewhat lost my muse for the moment.

This friday I'll be going to Palmerston North to see some family and my awesome girl ~KasziahXoX, so I'm pretty hyped for that. I should also be able to get a ton of pics over the week I'm there, so that's something to look forward to. After that I'll working as much as possible in order to save as much money I can to put towards school fees next year and a new camera - I'm leaning towards a Canon Powershot S series. Anyhow, enjoy the featureness...

Phew, I've been busy these past few days. To end all speculation, I'd like to say here (the place most people seem to go for news of my life) that I have found a job. I'm working assorted tasks in the cafe/bar near my parents' place, ranging from dishes to waiting. I've moved from the hostel I was at in Christchurch back to the middle of nowhere so I can work this job and save money on rent, with the hope of being able to save a decent amount of cash for next year. The job is hardly what I dreamed of doing, but it's better than stacking shelves like I was last year.

Anyhow, something I've been weighing up is the feature section I've been having in my journals lately. I don't know if the amount of work I put into finding, reviewing and featuring deviations is worth the amount of exposure it gets for the featured and for myself. Looking at the "recent visitors" widget on my page shows I usually only get 1-4 hits a day, and with an audience like that... well, what's the point?

I'm putting up a poll for this. Any feedback is welcome. In the mean time, I'll leave my features as they are for now...

A Great shot captured at the perfect time, with the perfect shutter speed. The refraction is astoundingly clear and the b+w adds a dimension of crispness to it. I wonder how many shots it took to get the timing just right.
I like having three feature boxes, one for each feature category (Favourites, Deviant, Art) as well as a bit dedicated to my awesome girlfriend. In the process, I remembered how annoying web design can be, especially when working with something you A) didn't create yourself B) don't understand C) At all.

With that said, I do like the CSS template `Lilyas created a lot, and I hope that in the future CSS can be used to spruce up a whole page rather than just the journal (with an option to turn custom skins off if/when they become a myspace-like mess) and available to all deviants, rather than just the subscribers.

On that note, I'm enjoying my subscription and beta-testing a lot, though I'm a little clueless about some features I've seen around and can't find. If someone could give me a heads-up about installing things like "recent visitors" and the like I'd appreciate it.

A Great shot captured at the perfect time, with the perfect shutter speed. The refraction is astoundingly clear and the b+w adds a dimension of crispness to it. I wonder how many shots it took to get the timing just right.

Last Sunday was the Christchurch devmeet, which was a load of fun. We gathered at Starbuck$ in the city mall, where I introduced myself and my craptastic camera before paying WAY too much for a mochachino. =Hypercannon forgot his straw, prompting this from the organizer, =Yvanklestein.

After we had all gathered and gotten somewhat used to another, we took off through the mall on our way to Hagley park and the botanical gardens. ~Forever-Simplicity decided to drive, and parked her car on the other side of the (massive) park, much to everyone's bemusement as =Sevenworldscollide went to find her, then *Bostwickenator went off to find the two of them.

In the meantime, the group caught some interesting shots including Yvanklestein's "the ultimate macro" and a couple of us got a candid shot of what was likely a drunk uni student lapdancing a statue, until his mates yelled "that guy's got a camera!" at him.

When everyone had finally found the group, we posed for some photos before =Hypercannon went home. We went for a walk to find somewhere to eat, taking some more strange shots along the way, like one of the guys "riding" a bike symbol on the pavement. One cafe didn't have enough seats for the seven of us, and the others we passed were expensive, so we ended up at BK.

After chomping into some greaseball burgers and fries, everyone except myself and Yvanklestein went home leaving us debating whether we should go to the pub or just go back to our respective accommodation. After looking up the bus timetables, he decided the latter and we bid each other farewell.

I had a great time and can't wait till all the photos are up. I'm looking forward to the next Devmeet, which should hopefully be on a day that isn't an important date like father's day and attract even more deviants.

For once my technology broke without me being present. The PC at my parents' house I use for most of my... uh, everything, died the other morning while I was still in bed, and my brother was busy trying to teach my mother to use online banking. My laptop is up and running in it's place, but it is hardly reliable, is lacking the vast majority of my files (including my photography ones ), and isn't powerful enough to edit my photos. I currently have it on dual-screen with my PC monitor just for fun, and that's pretty cool though

I'm in the market for a wireless adapter for use with the laptop, so I can get net access without having to pay a small fortune to go to the net cafe I frequent. Although, without a good enough computer to edit my photos, I probably wont be posting to DA that much. Not to mention my camera needs a SD card and a case, and I need a job.

I'll be going to the Christchurch Devmeet this Sunday, and I'm looking forward to meeting some other aspiring, struggling or established artists in the area, and no doubt getting up to some fun. Until then, RK out!

I've been quiet for a while, so here's the word straight from the RealmKnight's mouth. I finally got my camera (a rather sub-par Megxon C430) back from repairs, and dutifully returned my brother's superior Fujifilm Finepix F10 to him. However, my camera is now missing its case and memory card - making it hard for me to take my camera everywhere with me like I used to, and leaving me with an amount of internal memory that stores 16 photos at the most. The company that's been dealing with my camera is frustrating to say the least, so it's leaving me to wonder if they've misplaced it in the same way my laptop was "repaired" months back.

I have a 4GB SD-HC card which I intended to use with the camera, but the camera's unfortunately incompatible with High Capacity cards. This is leading somewhere - all this frustration over my equipment and not having spare money to do anything about it really put a damper on my spirits and left me feeling pretty uninspired about photography for a while. I've also been flat-out with the RP forum I co-admin, so that's taken up a lot of my time as well.

Fortunately, I've been a bit more interested over these past few days after a good photo shoot that lead to my latest deviation and some support from my special girl who recommended that I sign up to a localised photography website - which is just what I plan on doing after I polish off my prints with some fancy borders and the brand name I'll be using from now - "Skyraze Photography". (Just for the record, I have no affiliation with anything else on the web called "Skyraze")

So yeah, wish me luck
My RP forum is kicked into overdrive at the moment, and I'm trying to keep up with that and all the fun that includes. My mother, girlfriend and brother all have birthdays coming up soon, so I'm working on presents for mum and my bro, and Kaz already has hers - although I'd like to give her a plane ticket to visit me more than anything right now.

I should be getting my cheap old Megxon camera back any day now, which I'm not too excited about as I'll have to give my brother his far better Fujifilm one back. But that's the way it goes until I can save up for a Canon Eios or similarly awesome piece of equipment.

I'm in the market for a job, something all my subscribers are sure to know about by now. I'm really hoping for a job at a camera store or photography studio, but I'm also on the look out for something in IT that matches my skills there. I'm trying my best, and I've got a good feeling that something's out there - just gotta find it

Haven't updated this for a bit so here it is. My brother finally got in contact with the organisation that was supposed to have my camera fixed three months ago. I should get my craptastic Megxon camera back in a few weeks, and then be able to send my brother his camera back.

I haven't been in the mood for much photography lately since the weather's been terrible and it's so damn cold here in winter. I've also been feeling pretty down lately, and that's also affected my will to work on my art and gallery, among other things.

I did manage to find a "job" - a slave paperboy, which I quit on my first day due to the pay being insulting (not even enough to cover the gas to drive into town) and amount of work being ridiculous (3 hours of hauling several hundred pieces of junk mail for $11). Needless to say I feel like shit after being taken advantage of like that.

As for the few real jobs I've applied for, none of them want to even give me an interview. So all up, I'm feeling pretty bad right now. I'm a joke... I'm living at my parents house most of the time, even though I'm supposed to be an adult. I can't find a job to support myself, let alone save up for another go at college and a decent camera. And I'm stuck milking a sickness benefit for all it's worth, leaving me feeling pretty useless.

But I am glad for some things. My family have been great to me, even when I've been a frustrated ass. And my amazing girlfriend loves me completely, even though I don't love myself. Sorry for being emo, but I wanted to get this out...
I'd like to celebrate this milestone by thanking the people who got me here

First off, thanks to Zane for getting me interested in graphic design and art, and Kaleb for getting me into DA. HUGE thanks to my parents for getting me my first camera last christmas, my grandparents for letting me use their (awesome) camera for a while, and my brother for lending me his cam while mine gets repaired (or "if"... it's been over two months now)

Thanks to everyone who's supported me, especially Misplaced-Karma, living with death, and Robin Lover, who have given me tons of feedback and faves. And thanks to the awesome clubs I belong to and the cool people in them. And cheers to UseR2006 for his feature.

And tons of love for my special girl Karissa for loving me for everything I am

I'll also announce that I am still looking for work as a photographer, digital imager, or similar. From what I've found, it's very slim pickings in this field of employment, especially in Christchurch. However, I'm still hoping I can find something that I can do well and enjoy. So if anyone wants a photographer in Christchurch or the surrounding area, I'm available for commission. And lets not forget that my prints are available for a reasonable price.

After today's pretty successful photo shoot, I started to download my new photos to my PC's hard drive. With a half dozen left to transfer, my computer informed me that my hard drive was now completely full, and that I needed to kill some old files to make some space. My hard drive is only 80GB, and I was expecting this to happen soon anyway, but I would have preferred it to have happened once I got my shiny new 200GB portable Hard Drive, which I should have my hands on next week.

I'm still in the middle of searching for a job I can enjoy. I'm working with a job search agency, and trying hard to scan the net and papers for something involving digital photography and/or computing. It's pretty slim pickings so far though. Of the few jobs I found online, one would require me to move to Auckland, and the others would involve me being one of those guys who pounce on potential customers in a photography store. I have no desire to leave Christchurch, and I'm hopeless with customers, so I can count those out...

However, I did find a good pair of jobs in the paper. One needed someone with considerable computer skills to "down/upload and e-mail images" - which I spend a lot of my spare time doing anyway. Another, more interesting prospect involved "Pictoral data entry" at the local museum. Here's hoping I can get something

UPDATE: woohoo, thanks to a special at the store, I'm getting an extra 50GB for $10 cheaper than the original. Should be plenty of space for all my photos... For a while, anyway

It's been over a month since I picked up a camera, and DAMN it felt good to get my hands on my Grandparents' Canon Powershot G3 once again.

Several weeks ago, my brother broke my own camera - a craptastic Megxon C430, but a camera nonetheless. Because the only company that maintains these things is overseas in Taiwan or somewhere equally absurd, they take a long time to get things delivered and fixed up. Six weeks on, I'm still waiting for my camera.

The Camera I'm currently using is borrowed from my dad, who borrowed it from his parents in order to take photos for his holiday in the states. I don't know how long I'll be able to hang on to it, so I'll try to make the most of it for now. My brother, also irritated that my camera is taking so long to fix, has also decided to let me borrow his until I get mine back. It's in the post now, so should arrive soon.

My laptop continues to plague me. I managed to have it going for ten hours straight (playing Dungeon Siege 2 ) after switching the ram module into the other ram port, only for it to start freezing up again a few days later. At least now I can be somewhat sure that it's a RAM issue, thanks to a good friend who does tech support for me.

Anyhow, the last few weeks have been an absolute mess. I had to drop out of polytech after my stress and depression got too much for me to handle, and at one point I nearly completely lost it after one of my supposed friends pulled a twisted emotional prank on me. Fortunately I have some true friends, great family and a decent doc, who helped me through all this.

This leaves me searching for a job that I can both enjoy and cope with. So if any of my readers want to hire a college drop-out for any kind of photographic work in the Christchurch region, note me

I saw this on 's journal and thought it'd be a fun way to kill some time...

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...

Opening Credits:
Within Temptation - Evanescence
(someone in a friend's past is haunting me and her, through her memory of them. ouch)

Waking Up:
Ilah (Silent War) - Blindspott
(epic metal about struggling against something inside alone)

First Day At School:
Ruthless - Tsubasa Chronicle soundtrack
(this is an instrumental. I was pretty mute at school, so sure)

Shopping:
Over and Out - Foo Fighters
(Hmm, a lonely childhood = retail therapy?)

Hanging with friends:
Like the Angel - Rise Against
(spending time with friends makes me love an angelic girl somehow?)

First Kiss:
1975 - Blindspott
("I... I, am I everything you wanted? am I?" this works well)

Birthday:
Dig - Incubus
(two people who are always there for each other... dunno about that one)

Party Scene:
Trust - Megadeth
(I suppose I don't trust the people I party with)

Falling In Love:
the Kill - 30 Seconds To Mars
(Damn straight. "All I wanted was you")

Fight Song:
Of Wolf and Man - Metallica
(hehe... I fight like a warewolf XD)

Breaking Up:
Saddest Song in The World - Shihad
(very appropriate )

Prom:
Beautiful Lie - 30 Seconds To Mars
(Insincerity? School ball? no wai!!1!)

College:
The Unforgettable Fire - U2
(sure)

Life:
Everlong - Foo Fighters
(My life is a RAWKFEST! \m/ )

Mental Breakdown:
Fight For your right (to party) - Beastie Boys
(erm... wtf)

Driving:
A Song of Storm and fire - Tsubasa Chronicle Soundtrack
(I drive like an artistic-language techo-opera. erm...)

Flashback:
The River - Good Charlotte
(probably the newest song on my player, not sure about it being a flashback)

Getting back together:
Anywhere - Evanescence
(This song works pretty well, actually)

Love Scene:
Lithium - Evanescence
(most depressing love in the world apparantly...)

Wedding:
Awaken - Opshop
(a song about dreaming, I guess. Could work)

Honeymoon:
Broken - Seether & Amy Lee
(worst. honeymoon. ever.)

Birth of Child:
eternal - Evanescence
(another instrumental... I guess my kid's a mute too?)

Final Battle:
The Call of Ktulu, S&M version - Metallica
(epic rock instrumental with orchestral backing. perfect for an intense battle)

Death Scene:
Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
(I guess it's not less dangerous with the lights out...)

Funeral Song:
Enter Sandman - Metallica
(the eternal "sleep with one eye open")

It seems that I wont be able to update my gallery as often as I'd like to for a few reasons. First off, my camera is still broken, and my old man took my grandparents' camera (which I took my most recent photos on) with him on holiday. So I can't take new photos until my crap-tastic digicam gets it's screen replaced, which my brother just informed me was going to take "at least three weeks"

I bought a tripod off trademe in anticipation of when I'll get my camera back. It cost me all of $10, but when it arrived it turned out to be a mini-tripod about 20cm tall... Not really what I was after. It might be handy for some indoors stuff, but I was looking for one about 1.5-2 metres tall for general use. These are probably rather expensive though, so I'll just see where things go.

Anyhow, my laptop decided to start imploding... AGAIN. I can currently squeeze about 15 minutes of work out of it at a time, but that definitely isn't enough for me to work on digital art, random writings, or my on-again-off-again amateur game project. And I'm about ready to biff the accursed thing out my second-story window *shakes fist*

I'm back at polytech after my much-needed break, and the course still sucks - go figure. Meh, seven more weeks and I can hopefully move into the real world and get a job ripping people off for computer repairs. Apart from that, I've also got some other crap going on right now, which is getting to me more than I'd like to admit.

But hopefully once I get these things sorted, I'll be able to get this show going again...

My brother came to visit me and my parents for a week while I'm on holiday. He brought his hard drive, DVDs and PS2 games with him, so now I'm addicted to FF12 and trying to watch all his movies.

He went out with my old man to a car racing thing yesterday. It's not really my kind of thing, and I didn't want to get up at 5am in order to get there on time, so I stayed back and played FF12 all day (as any FF fanboy would). They also wanted a camera to take, so I gladly showed my brother how to use mine and gave him some tips for dealing with the retarded ways it acts at times.

So they come back in the evening, and he tells me that the screen broke, rendering my camera effectively useless. Knowing that I wanted to take some photos at the convention today, my dad managed to borrow his parents' digital camera - a shiny Canon Powershot SLR - for me. And after using it for a short while, I realise just how BAD the Megxon C430 really was.

So today I went into Christchurch (my parents live in the "middle of fucking nowhere") with my brother and met up with my good friends
& who didn't want to come to the Armageddon Expo, so we went to an arcade instead. My Brother beat me in some random racing game, I kicked his ass at Time Crisis 4, and learned that I can't play dancing games whatsoever. I had a great time anyway.

Finally, I got to the convention centre with my brother, and checked out the place. We missed several of the events since we got there in the mid afternoon, but we got to see an interesting Q&A with some popular voice actors, which was really neat. I would have liked to get autographs from Don S Davis (General Hammond) and John Rhys-Davies (GIMLI!! ), but I wasn't really up for paying the signing fee.

Signing fees... bleh! if I ever become famous and charge signing fees, please slap me.

I would have had a few games of Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards, but a friend of mine lost them after I let him borrow them. I did however get my photo taken with a Darth Vader Cosplayer and a pair of Stormtroopers.

My brother was extremely bored by the whole thing, which he called a glorified shop after noticing all the stalls selling things from comics to anime DVDs to costumes and props, so we left after I got a few neat photos. I would have enjoyed it more if I had my friends with me and had some money to burn, but It was still a pretty neat place to check out.

Anyhow, I wont be able to take any new photos until I either get this thing fixed, or (preferably) get a new camera that doesn't suck. Fortunately for my dozen or so fans, this doesn't mean I'm going to stop deviating, since I still have many photos on my hard drive that are ripe for deviation...

I just got back from getting a well-needed haircut (I was an emo at the front and a bogan at the back - an "EMOGAN" ) and a certain frustrating piece of computer equipment was waiting for me in perfect working order. That's right, my accursed laptop is now fixed, and the goodness that was locked away in it's hard drive will soon be uploaded.

As for the supposed $700+ processor replacement it needed? Apparently it's in perfect shape, and the damn thing just needed a clean to stop it overheating. So I'm gladly ripping off the sticker the "Laptop Company" slapped on my laptop, after the crap they've put me through with this thing.

*rip*

Bitterness aside, it's great to have this thing going again. It's not anywhere near as powerful as I'd like it to be, nor is it one of those neat tablet hybrids that are all the rage with digital artists, but it usually does the job and I'm happy to have it back.

Now, a few random things...

The Warehouse is selling 1GB SD memory cards for $45, right when I'm getting sick of my old one acting screwed up

Forgive me if I don't make too much sense, I think I made my bourbon and coke a little strong...

It's finally the easter holidays, and things are a little better for me now - in some ways, at least. I haven't heard from my mum's friend who was gonna take another look at my laptop, but I'm over being stressed about the whole thing. I also think I might be able to claim the GST on the repairs back as a "business expense", since I need the laptop to do my photo editing, and I'm trying to make a few bucks from selling overpriced prints on DA. Here's hoping - I could do with that $40 of GST back...

I've finished the first half of my course in Computer Repairs. I passed the written section of the exam, failed the practical test because my computer kept crashing and I ran out of time, but got to do it again and kicked it's ass, but I didn't get enough marks on my severely incomplete workbook to pass the course - yet. So all I need to do is copy some stuff out of a friend's book and hand it in again, and then I'll hopefully get a pass mark.

As for the angsty crap, I think this time off will do me the world of good. Two weeks without needing to worry about stuff is just what I need right now. I'll hopefully be going to the Christchurch Armageddon Expo with some friends, and my brother is going to come to my place for the second week, so I'm looking forward to it. I'll also get a chance to upload a heap of photos, so keep watching this space

People are probably wondering why I'm in a bad mood. It's a combination of several things that are probably simple on the surface, but very complicated and frustrating to me. Put simply: my laptop that I whined about in my last journal is screwed, I hate the course I've spent $2,500 and several months on, I have a huge midterm exam on monday that I can't focus on studying for, and my personal life is getting very weird and awkward to me.

First off, my laptop - I got a call from the place that "fixed" it before, and they told me that either the CPU or Motherboard is screwed (which I already knew) and that it'd cost upwards of $700 to repair, and it probably wouldn't be worth doing so, even if I could afford it. Fortunately, they didn't charge me for their diagnostic (not that I was gonna pay them for it anyway) and I got the paperweight that my laptop has become back. My mum obsessed about the whole deal, and wanted to send it to a computer guy she knows to see if he could do anything with it. I told her a million times that "it's fucked", but gave up and let her send it off for a second opinion just so she'd shut up about it.

Now the course. It's ironic, really - for over half of my life I've been extremely interested in computers, so it was only natural that I'd try to pursue a career in something computer-related. So I enrolled in a course in computer engineering - building and fixing computer hardware and systems. Right from the start it was a disappointment, and as I grinded my way through the huge text books and experienced countless technical issues with all manner of technology, I lost my interest in the course and everything it's about. So now I feel like I've wasted a huge (to me at least) amount of money, time and effort on something that I can't care about anymore.

Which brings me to number three: E X A M. This exam, in fact. I have never been good at school, for reasons of both my own fault and not. Out of all my high school exams, I passed ONE paper. Needless to say that I have no real idea about studying, and the idea of an exam gets me very stressed. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to fuck this up completely, and if that happens I might as well quit since the course will only get harder from here.

Finally, personal life... god, what should I say... actually, I think I'll leave this bit out. Bitching to an art community isn't the best way for me to resolve my feelings or private life. And putting these things out where my friends can see them is only inviting more awkwardness into what's already so very hard for me to deal with... I just wish things didn't hurt so much.

Why can't technology just work? Why is my laptop in the shop again only one week after they claimed they had fixed the damn thing? And what does an artist have to do to get tools he can rely on?

I took my laptop to course a couple times to get applications and other computer stuff for it last week after I'd got it back and finally found and installed my driver DVD. It took me about 2 hours to 3/4 fill my abysmal 40GB hard drive with that stuff, along with all my photos, music and assorted junk.

However, after I'd been using it for a bit, it started seizing up after a while and completely freezing. This is an issue usually caused by the CPU overheating - which had never happened before I took the piece of junk to this store. I was reluctant to put my laptop back into the hands of a company that mucked me around and charged me 1.5x what they claimed they would, but since I had their "guarantee", I figured they would have to fix any damage that was their fault (apparently all of it).

Needless to say the guy at the shop wouldn't give me a quote on how much the repair would cost, said I probably couldn't claim this under their guarantee since they only fixed my DVD drive and got me some WinXP reinstall disks, and didn't even say when they'd get around to looking at it, or when I could expect it to be "fixed".

The sad thing is, even as I type this I'm supposed to be training to be just like these fuckwits who are ripping me off for "fixing" my useless computer. The circle of life, eh?

I've just finished the digital photography course I talked about in a previous journal, so here's some boring details in case someone's interested.

Long story short, it was great. I learned heaps about how to compose, take and edit photos, and had a pretty good time doing it. Over the course, I took hundreds of photos to test camera settings, but the vast majority of them aren't deviation material for that reason. I still managed to get some neat pics though, and I'll try to get a couple up sometime soon.

I'm not sure where I'm gonna take my photography from here, but I would like to do some more training and get more experience with it. Here's hoping I can get somewhere

It has come to my attention that my camera's time settings have been completely inaccurate, and due to this any photos taken - but not necessarily submitted - before today's date (22/03/07, or 03/22/07 for you american types) have incorrect time stamps. This certainly isn't worth splitting hairs over to anyone except myself when I try to sort through my 500+ photos, but it's worth noting that the "Date picture taken" info on my deviations is completely wrong... although that is pretty obvious when it claims a sunset took place at 1:28:08 AM.

Ain't technology grand?

While wandering through the atrium of polytech yesterday I randomly grabbed a brochure about "creative short courses" and checked out what was on offer for photography. I noticed there was a course over the next two weekends (starting tomorrow), offering an introduction to digital photography.

I read the description, and wasn't too sure if I should commit to it, as I'm already familiar with many of the things the course covers - such as resolution and compression. However, I figured that there was still so much that I could learn from this course, and that if all else failed, I would still be able to walk away with some good photos.

This should leave me reasonably busy over the next two weeks, with computer engineering course on monday-thursday and photography on the weekend, but it should also be a load of fun, and I hope to learn quite a few things, and become able to take even better photos in the future.

Update: Saturday was great, I learned about a whole bunch of digital camera features, got some tips about composition, and took a bunch of photos using the features and techniques we learned about. Sunday on the other hand... I didn't go because I was sick as a dog thanks to some very dodgy fish pie the night before. I'm still a bit queasy, but I'm well enough not to have missed any of college this week.

In other news, two weeks and $350 later, my laptop is finally finished being fixed and is currently in the process of being pimped out. Thanks to the handy memory card reader it features, I can work on my photos while I'm at my hostel, and upload pics from the college library. Hooray. Now I just need to work on my poorness... sigh...

As I mentioned last week, I've been considering a move into semi-pro photography, and was considering selling some prints on DA. One of my latest deviations, "Vulcan Skies", has now become my first print submission, as I consider it to be one of my best photos thus far, and also because I don't have to worry about the legal issues of selling this photo because it doesn't depict anything that someone else might own.

Anyhow, if you want to support a poor young tech student and up-and-coming artist, as well as become the proud owner of a very dramatic sunset poster, be sure to stop by my shop and get buying

Cleaning up the gallery (and other stuff)

I should probably say something profound, since this is the first journal post I've done. But I can't really be bothered, since this post is just to explain a few things:

First... my laptop is broken in more ways than I can count, (motherboard or hard disk is busted, CD drive acts like it doesn't exist, it needs a WinXP install, needs hardware upgrades...) and NO-ONE seems to have a SD memory card reader, so I'll only be able to upload photos once a fortnight - when I visit my parent's place.

Since I've moved on from the forum signatures I was doing when I opened my gallery, to doing a lot of photography and a bit of digital art, I've scrapped/deleted most of my sig deviations in order to... clean up my gallery, I suppose. The ones that are left are my personal faves.

Also, I've been considering doing photography as a semi-professional thing, both because I enjoy photography, and I need some dollars. I think that selling prints on DA could be a good option for this, but I don't think I'd atually sell too many considering I've had less than 500 pageviews. Also, I'm not completely sure how the print-selling thing works, nor am I particulalry clued-up about the legal issues of photos that feature random people in crowds and the like, or buildings/landmarks.

I've ranted long enough to my audience of 11 watchers, so I'll just leave this by saying that any advice and oppinions are welcome.
