I hope each and every one of you is having an awesome Christmas. I'm stranded at uni so it's going to be... new for me, but I'm sure to keep it interesting. How are you spending New Year's Eve? I'm grabbing a coach to London with a few friends and gonna go see the fireworks!! It's bound to be awesomeness, so I'm excited about that.

Two (was it two?) days ago I went to watch Avatar and, man... I was blown away! I'd first seen the trailer which promised a mediocre film, with a highly clichéd plot and corny moments. Maaaaaaaaaan was I wrong! Well... not about the storyline... which isn't the most original one out there (not by a longshot), but about the quality of the film. Mediocre? PFHAH! It's James 'The Man' Cameron!! I'm officially subscribing to like every single film that man poops!! Avatar makes liking Titanic socially acceptable. You can, from now on, with not even a smidgen of shame, declare before people "I liked Titanic. I thought it was a masterpiece. It's James Cameron. The man knows how to direct his scenes!" And that he does. By the way. I dunno if you can remember it, but there's this scene in the Titanic which has managed to stick to my mind so vividly I could draw it! When the ship's sunk, the camera journeys through its rooms (with masterfully composed music touching your heartstrings in the background) and there's this shot of the ball-room and a woman, floating before the light, her dress flowing around her, transparent and... gorgeous. That scene always makes me gape for the sheer beauty of it. Always.

I've taken a liking to manipulations most recently so I might be posting some of those in the future. I don't have a scanner anywhere here so I can't scan anything I'm drawing. I know, fail...

Returning to this year's films on a sort of tangent from my digression from Avatar to James Cameron to the awesomeness of Titanic... I really have a good feeling about them. I've watched Inglourious Basterds and, although it was a very Tarantino film, I liked it. I didn't think it was very good, mostly because it lacked... substance (hence, Tarantino film), but it was interestingly done. Brad Pitt is love, too. I love his acting. But what I'd really like to mention is... Hurt Locker. Wow oh wow. You go in there not expecting much and then you get this utterly realistic and powerful film... you don't know what hit you. By the time you exit the cinema it's starting to sink in and you realize its full impact. Very nicely done, very nicely written and... hawt dang Jeremy Renner needs that Golden Globe! BADLY.

In the hopes that this year's Oscars won't disappoint, I bid you adieu and wish you the very merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years!

OK, I feel this need a better explanation. Dawgnabbit Humberto Ramos can draw, but he hasn't been drawing Runaways. I was quite amused to find out that they're finally changing the creative team and it's all ladies. They've had ladies before, but now it's ALL ladies. I am amused and pleasantly surprised. The reason why I'm screaming 'hell yeah' so late is that I've 1) been very busy with uni, 2) thought to abandon Runaways altogether thanks to Ramos' genius. It spilled over the book and I couldn't read it anymore. Yes, it was that bad. I'm sorry, but Chase looking like Sabretooth when eating a burger made me drop that in a second. I'm still wary of buying the two TPBs because I know I'll be throwing good money away just on Moore's writing (and, to be honest, that's not that impressive either). Well, it couldn't have been exceptional, not after you have a Joss Whedon run... but I expected ... I dunno... Something BETTER than we were given?

Funny thing... If you go on Sara Pichelli's blog to the entry where she announces it and scroll down to see the comments, the last comment might make you smile. Not an amused smile, but one of those smiles that floods your face and warms your heart because you know what that person says is true and are excited to see it for yourself. I quote:

Sorry I haven't been posting much but I've been busy with Uni and life and don't have a scanner. But I am going home in July so I will be free of Uni, my social life will practically be the computer and my parents do own a scanner, so I expect I'll be fiddling with a pencil in my spare time. I have been doing a bit of artsy stuff, but it's mostly Photoshop manips which I don't care to put on here for a great many reasons which mainly include copyright issues. I've also been skinning RPG forums lately. When I say lately, I mean last night, all night and morning. T'was fun. Looks pretty good too. Not bad for a first hack, really. I'm basing my comparison on what I've seen people do their first times... it's not all that pleasant. Aaaanyhoo... Just wanted to prod to see if you guys were still alive and let you know I am.

By now I've seen most of the films which were nominated for Oscars and I'm just as unimpressed as I was when I watched the damn Award show. They were fine when it comes to the work invested in them, but they seemed to lack that certain something which gives them a spark. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button got me yawning halfway through it. I love Cate Blanchett to death but even she lost me. My interest faded away slowly but surely. It was a touching story, but it left me with nothing to think about, really. It's a good film, don't get me wrong, but it's nothing that... SPEAKS to me. Same thing with Slumdog Millionaire. The acting was by far impressive, but I loved the beginning. I was very confident after the first ten-twenty minutes. Halfway, however, it went downhill. Too much, too too much. And then it was Benjamin Button repeat: nothing to think about. I preferred the Changeling (and I'm not even an Angelina Jolie fan!). I could sing hymns about Fireflies in the Garden. In Bruges!!! IN BLOODY BRUGES (I've never seen Colin Farrell acting so well)!!

First year when I LOVED LOVED LOVED all the films nominated for best Animated Picture. Dude. Bolt. Not Pixar and yet... awesome. It wasn't fantastic, but it was a funny family film. And not quite what you've seen before either I was very pleased with the basic idea. Wall-e, of course, after the reception it got, was going to win. I had no doubt about it. Personally, I would've chosen Kung Fu Panda for the Oscar for the sole reason that it was phenomenal as a whole. I paid to watch that film three times and then watched it at other people's houses an additional astounding number of times. I recommended it to everybody and everybody loved it. It's an animated film worth watching in whatever mood you're in. If you're wacky, it'll make you wackier. If you're down, it'll cheer you up. I can't say the same thing for Wall-e. However, it had a better, more complex message than Kung Fu Panda. It had something under the surface. It wasn't an old concept under a new wrapper - or, should I say... it wasn't an overused concept under yet another wrapper. New concepts are very very rare, so let's not exaggerate. It was touching. It was remarkable. But I wouldn't watch it again. It's Mystic River all over again for me. Was very impressed and touched by the film. Watched it a couple of times, but, I'm sorry, that's my limit.

And now I feel like watching it yet again. Gotta get my hands on that DVD. Heh.

So yeah. Wow. This was not meant to be about the Oscars. It now officially is. I hope this year's films are better, coz... man... they need to be so very badly. If Slumdog Millionaire's been chosen as best film of year 2008... it's sad. Maybe I'm asking for too much... but I like my films with a deeper message, when appropriate. C'mon Hollywood, it's the Oscars' Best Motion Picture Award! It's appropriate!

OK, beyond the joke. I'm really sorry I've made promises I couldn't deliver. I'm... struggling with a bit of block when it comes to drawing. I have some random spurs which usually end up with completely something else than I had in mind. That, and a nice incident of me moving out of the country and forgetting my sketches at home. And then I talk to my mum and she's like... "What sketches? There were some random scribbles left on the desk. I think I threw them away." Wheee... I'm kind of still depressed about that so I dunno.

So yeah, I've been kind of..missing motivation lately. I'm motivated to do a lot of other stuff, just not drawing. Finally got to update my stats, though. I'm not too crazy about going home for Christmas, but there are certain things I'm looking forward to. Will try to get my butt to do some work in the next few weeks.

That being said. Not open for any trades or whatever.

Lots of updates about me. All fabulous news - hence the unfathomable luck that was mentioned.

:pencil: Place at Uni confirmed and stuff. Plane ticket bought. Leaving on Sept 23. Now all I have to do is wait for the accomodation offer and I'm all set. :]

:pencil: I'm currently writing from my all-new Laptop. :D And proud of it. The only thing that bugs me is this Windows Vista - pun intended. In case you missed it, Vista, bugs, Vista, bugs, get it? Hard to find Laptops which work with Windows and don't have Vista on'em.

:pencil: Keep an eye out for either inks or new sketches coz I got me a tablet. Well, 'I got me' isn't the proper term for it. Indeed there was a great deal of getting, but in the sense of receiving. ~Kain-from-NOS & ~CA2007 bought me one. :heart: I'm still trying to get my head and hand around it. It looks easier than it is, really.

:pencil: Metallica was kicka$$!! I'm not a big fan, but I loved the atmosphere and the company :heart:. It rained all throughout the damn thing but I didn't mind. :D Unique experience... 6 people under a pink raincoat at a Metallica concert. Truly unique. :rofl:

But let me tell you... IT WAS AMAZING!!! Just take a long-awaited ending, shove some mind-blowing animation, a couple of plot twists and some predictable (but still very cool) situations and you get... genius. I'm not going to pretend that I didn't see about 90% of what was coming before it actually came, but it was so wondrous that my mind refused to accept it until it actually happened and, boy, did it happen!! I should have probably let this sizzle down a bit in my brain before writing this but I can't. I'm too damn excited!! Plus, even though I don't usually ship, because it's obvious what ships are going to be from the beginning, I was pleased with what happened in the end. Oh and although Katara's not my favourite character of the lot (quite the contrary) I thought she was pretty cool in Into the Inferno. Kudos for the writers there. Zuko was Zuko and we love our Zuko but what really really really made me jump out of my seat and start yelling "YEAH BABY!!" like a crazed person (seriously, ask my mom...) was Aang. And Toph and Sokka, but Aang was da man.

Phew... Right. That is all.

See... In about a month and a half I'm not going to be writing to you from Romania anymore. (This is the part where I start squealing and jumping around the place................ OK. Done. Back to writing.) No sir-e, gonna be giving all of yous a nice big grin from the United Kingdom (England, to be more precise) where I'll be going to University. Yeah. Amazing, right? I know. Cool, too. Fab etc, etc, etc. Part of my busyness was academically-related. The other is a bit too personal to talk about it here.

The important thing is that I'm really going to be active from now. For sure. It's a promise. At first, I won't seem to be very active because I've got... 18,028 Deviations and 2,948 Messages to read/look at (feel free to faint. I have. Repeatedly). I'll probably comment on/reply to some of them, but not to all. I'll try to get myself a sub too. (I've been trying, but this stupid paypal's all wonky for Romania -because contrary to popular belief, we aren't "people too"- and cards won't work at all so direct purchase is no-go.)

On other distant frontiers...

Metallica's coming to Bucharest on the 22nd of this month. Now, I'm not a hardcore Metallica fan (like my pal *NickMockoviak is), but I'm still going, heh heh. Call it alternative motives ;). So I'm going to be hanging out with ~CA2007 and ~Kain-from-NOS. News had spread at some point about a Bon Jovi concert but it didn't happen :(. Lots of concerts lately, but no attendance (from my part). I'm still bummed out about missing that Jethro Tull concert last summer and I'll probably be until I get to see&hear them live. If I ever do. Man I love those guys. To. Death. They're on my fave bands list, right under Pink Floyd and on the same level as all my other band favourites. Notice how Pink Floyd's one step above. Favourite bands are like that, you know? (Sorry Chelsey!)

The thing about Romania is that films arrive here WAY too late. They show them at least a month later than everywhere else (except in Bucharest. Damn them!) Anyway. 1) I hate drawing hands. Hate hate hate. Stab stab stab.
2) I can brood upon a pose or idea for a drawing for DAYS without actually sketching anything.
3) Hardly ever had the finished product in mind before beginning drawing - always change/remove/add stuff.
4) I've never gone through all the steps to drawing a character: like..line drawing, then the cube-cillinder thingy and whatever is out there. I can't seem to find the patience to do so.
5) When I was really little - like 5-7 something - I used to have an obsession with drawing stories with squirrels and chipmunks as main characters. Tree houses and all. They weren't Chip'n Dale inspired though.
6) I never seem to be able to draw something inspired by a song but I'm working on that.
7) I'm still taken aback when I draw something that looks sorta like a guy, since I used to have problems with that
8) I can't decide which I like most: cartoony or realistic style of drawing
9) The best inspiration for my drawings are other artists' works. (I see Betty Boop and draw Daredevil. Seriously.)
10) I'd love to do something more...animated in the future

Second order of business. Or should I say busyness? The fact is, I'm over my head with homework and projects, curricular or extracurricular, they eat all of my time. So I'm going to apologize to everyone who are expecting drawings from me, I won't be able to deliver. I'm sorry. I might throw something in the gallery from time to time - something done at school more likely. I've got 2000 deviations screaming for me to see them but I haven't got the time. Time for something more...difficult. :plotting:

It's a style conversion Jam.

Everybody knows how western comicbook style is, right? It contains a large variety of styles which have made a place for them under that -shall I say- genre. From Jack Kirby to Joshua Middleton, all those styles have something in common. Heck, some are even manga-influenced (note that they are NOT manga).

Now, everybody knows how the guys over at Disney draw. Their style is totally different, more cartoon-like, innocent looking, etc.

Guess where I'm going at? No? Here's the deal: you take a character, either from the comics (any publisher) or from Disney (Snow White, Aladdin, Bambi, whatever) and draw that particular character in the other style. If it's Rogue, she's going to be drawn in Disney style, if it's Esmeralda (Hunchback of Notre Dame), she's going to be drawn comicbook style. Okay?

Every day, there are more and more Craigslist posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on Craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. Well...it's that time of the year! Sleighbells are ringing (although I can't hear them), kids are singing (run! run far away!! air pollution!!! - heh just kidding), and people are having a good time.

I got what I wanted for Christmas! Yep, guessed it! Scanner! Now I'm scan-happy and just plain happy. Finally managed to get my folks gifts! First year when I do this because I got my merit scholarship for last year! W00t to that!

But I've been and still am so busy with exams and stuff that 1) I forgot all about it 2) don't have enough time to finish - at least I don't think I have. I have a written paper on Wednesday, I'm booked for Monday and Tuesday afternoons AND I've got two more written papers on Thursday and Friday. And she's gonna be mad at me. Gah! Why did I say yes in the first place???

It's that time of year!

The annual Holiday Art Swap was something I participated in last year over at the PencilJack forums, and it's back again this year. It was a lot of fun! Signup already closed for it, but I was thinking....

What if I held one here on DA? So I borrowed the event from the very awesome guy that organizes the one on PJ.

The rules are really simple:

:bulletred: You sign up for it while signup is open. So if you're in, please reply.

:bulletgreen: Once it's closed, I will randomly pair everyone up, and you get together with the other person with what you'd like each other to draw. If there's an odd number I'll figure something out :)

:bulletred: Then you have until December 25th to get it done and mail it to them (if you can). A tip is to email them a high rez scan in time for Christmas so they can see it as well :)

:bulletgreen: When the 25th is past, everyone can post scans of their gifts and I'll make a whole journal entry with thumbnails so that everyone can show what they got from their fellow deviants.

:bulletred: This is for fun, it's not a contest. But you and your friend will be getting each other's work, so give as good as you hope you will get.

:bulletgreen: Spread the fun! Any artists can sign up for it, I just need to be able to put you guys in contact with your partners.

Signup will be open from now until November 24th (this coming Friday). After that I'll draw the pairs and list them on November 25th. Then you'll have a month to do the gift and send it off!

Saturday I just wanted to chill and did practically nothing all day... in the evening, I did the art jam with my pal ~dnbdjq45 which mind you lasted 30 minutes. She blew a fuse! I drew all day! I didn't do any school work! But I drew all day! Hey, I get it that she's angry for not doing anything all day, but she's angry for DRAWING all day?? Since when? I only drew for half an hour... and now I'm not allowed to draw until the Christmas holidays!!!
:frustrated: She's MAD!! And she took my digicam away! Gaaah! It's days like these I wonder if my parents had lived in Germany during the Nazi regime and supported that cause, would they have been Nazis? Really... OK, I've been working on a new project for the past few days so if I seem kinda busy and don't have time for requests I apologize. I'm not telling you what it is because if I don't finish I don't want to bring anyone's hopes up. Yeah, normally that wouldn't happen but school starts in a little over a week; who knows? AND I'm working on a drawing for ~Evo-Obsessed-Club's contest. It's almost done, just a little tweaks here and there, finding a scanner and submitting it.
