One of the websites I visited this morning had a warning out about a major security flaw in all supported versions of Internet Explorer. The next site repeated the warning, and recommended switching to another browser. I still wasn't sure how reliable it was, so I went digging for more information. Here's what I found:

[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]

So I've got to agree with them - switch to another browser, even if it's only temporary, and please pass this on. I personally recommend Firefox, but some of the articles also link to others.

Thanks for reading,
Sarah

There was a competition not long ago; I won a prize for form but got beaten badly at sparring. ~AkumaSenshi gave me some tips though, so I hope to do better this time.

I turned 19 early last month. My payslip does not yet reflect that.

My keyboard has been switched to a left-handed Dvorak layout, and I'm getting better at using it, but no-one I've told knows what that means. Hee hee.

And finally:
On Christmas Day, my family and I are going to Japan for three weeks. I've never been there before, and my parents haven't since Mum followed Dad there twenty-odd years ago. So we're looking forward to it. Eventually we need to decide what we plan to do when we get there.

No, it's not a new baby or anything like that... my 30-year-old cousin Emma got married last Wednesday. It must've been the most informal non-Vegas wedding in the history of the universe. Most traditions were upheld, but in a half-joking kind of way (e.g.: the bouquet was just handed to the nearest single friend); the groom was repeatedly called Yocchan in the ceremony itself (his name is Yoshitaka) and the dance music was just that, actual dance music, not a single waltz in sight - things like Abba songs, Love Shack, Uptown Girl... the list goes on and includes several songs that I should not have known as well as I did, seeing as how they were before my time... in short, the Nutbush was as formal as it got. I am borderline antisocial. I danced anyway. It was fun.

Oh! We had a sushi stall in the Ekka. I skipped a prac my parents didn't know about to help when they were short of staff. It did well.

Last night, for the first time, I think I died in a dream. Falling down the stairs. Now that's pathetic.

Am I the only one who can't get the mood thing in the little box underneath this to change?

So, this is my first journal update since January. So much has happened that I've forgotten most of it, which is good because most of it's pretty mediocre.

I went on a trip to Caloundra with a couple of friends, and ended up fighting with them; got a few good photos though, so now's as good a time as any for an art dump.

Since said holiday proved to me that the family camera absolutely sucks for more-than-basic shots, I went out and bought a new one with half my savings. It's amazing, but I'd be considerably happier with it if it acknowledged my computer. Ditto for the scanner.

~Sailor-Destiny turned 19 this time last month. Probably should've mentioned that earlier.

At the last AYC concert, I gave my old conductor some storybook illustrations she commissioned me for. I wasn't expecting her to be so thrilled! She hasn't paid me yet, but I'm not sure I want her to, since I left it so disgustingly late. I'm thinking about posting the pictures here, if I can figure out how without splitting the pages or making the file too big.

<Start Header>

...

<End Header>

Take a look at this website I found: [link]
I think it's funny. It might not seem so at first, but just spend three minutes there... and then ask yourself what the heck you've been doing for the last three minutes... and I think you'll understand.

Now that you're trying not to giggle, or more likely wondering just who is this girl who finds things like this funny, I'd like to tell you that I now have a piece of very official-looking laminated paper that says I'm legally allowed to crash a car. Yes that's right! I got my learner's license. You should probably think about getting off the road now.

Also, it turns out I have a slight vision problem and glasses won't help. My eyes don't converge properly, meaning that whatever I think I'm looking at, I'm actually focusing on a point quite some way behind it. So now I have this weird glass prism thing that I have to read with for ten minutes a day, probably for the rest of my life (provided, of course, that I don't lose it tomorrow) that forces me to focus by making it hurt if I don't. Supposedly, after a few months I'll be seeing better, though personally I never noticed the problem.

And I joined a tae kwon do class. It hurts. A lot. But it was also a lot of fun, and Rachel's joining with me, so I'll have someone to fight with once we get to that level. Who I wouldn't mind kicking sometimes, and who will probably enjoy beating the stuffing out of me, so it's kind of win-win.

<Start Footer>

Check this out: a club that actually cares what the artworks look like for once, instead of just adding any old thing!

<End Footer>

OK! Where to start?

I turned 18 last Wednesday. And it turns out I hate the taste of alcohol. Joy.

We have a new house! It's only about five minutes away from our old one, but everything about it is completely different. It's one and a half acres for one thing, and for the first time in my life we have trees, but the house itself is tiny. I think the zoning is "rural lifestyle," which could be why we get to have a bonfire in our own backyard. It would also account for the complete lack of streetlights and the 2km walk over three hills to the nearest bus stop. In the dark. I really should get a driver's license... but it's easier to get Mum and Dad to take me everywhere I hope they realise I'm never moving out now.. not when they just bought my dream home.

Also, Saturday was my last concert ever with the AYC. This choir has been my life; I can't remember not being part of it, and I don't want to leave! But I'm too old now - I only got to stay this year on a technicality. Mrs Thomas, our conductor, gave me two solos this time around though, and my sister told Mum that I did well when she thought I couldn't hear. I can't even say how much that means to me - Rachel always seems to disapprove of just about everything I do, and it stings because I want her to like me. Seeing us together, you'd never guess I'm older.

Well, I'm off to fail a maths exam!
I've got this ridiculous urge to write "Ja Ne"...

Not that anyone's actually going to read this, but... Europe was great! Kinda sick of singing though. In 19 days, we gave at least 21 concerts. And always the same terrible repertoire! Oh, in case anyone happens to be reading who doesn't have a clue what I'm talking about - 48 members of the Australian Youth Choir, from 5 different states, went to Europe on Tour, singing all over the place. I went because it was my last chance, next year they kick me out because I'll be 18. (Being the oldest, by the way, definitely does not guarantee any kind of respect.) It was SO worth it, even though I owe my parents $4000 Australian. I'll probably put in another journal about it, as well as some of the photos I took.
I had almost 300 messages waiting here (all but 9 were journals) and 630-odd deviations, which basically just means I have to clean up my watch list; I don't even remember why I watched some of them.
In the meantime: HELLO!

It's been getting slower and slower, and a few days ago, it just gave up. Then Mum went and bought a new modem, or whatever you call those things, and guess what, it STILL doesn't work. It seemed like it was going to, but it only lasted half a day. Looks like the sound is going too. I suppose we should have expected this, we got the computer second-hand about seven years ago, but we can't afford a new one right now. So I'm going to have to stay off dA for a while - uni has a download limit, and it's not working perfectly on this computer either.

I don't get birthday or Christmas presents for another five to ten years, and I have to pay my parents back half, but I get to spend 19 days travelling around another continent performing. It's the chance of a lifetime - and my last chance, because next year I'm too old.

So now I have to finish a 2000 word philosophy essay before I go. The one I haven't started yet and don't have any ideas for. I got my results back for my first one: 23/30.
I'm just going to fill space with meaningless babble about nothing much. Random stuff, like how my dad stepped on our Pom-Bichon, Chi, and had him limping around the house for a day. And how I cut up the vaccuum cleaner cord in four places with the end of the vaccuum cleaner last week. And how no-one talks to me at uni, and I've discovered that I don't really want them to. I'm not good at the whole 'social life' thing. But I found a really good second hand book store, and a flock of Australian White Ibis near the campus lake that don't mind my company in breaks. They're very polite. When you hand-feed them, they're brave enough to come close but they don't snatch at the food or bite your fingers. Nothing like geese or swamphens! I've been calling the swamphens 'lake chickens.' I saw one of them on a nest with three babies, and other adults helping, but a week later it was gone. I don't know why. That lake keeps losing water in this drought; it was a handspan lower after my first week. Now there are places I couldn't even see before where I can walk without getting my feet wet. I've been kicked out of my chemistry class. I'm doing a bachelor of arts course, and the faculty decided two weeks into the semester that they wouldn't let students go to classes from other faculties in the first year anymore. They got tired of the course being used as a stepping stone. But I'm going to those classes anyway, and there's nothing they can do to stop me! Mwahahaha! Wow, look where this rant has taken me. Hey, my first rant! Ah... this is a rant right? I'm not misunderstanding the term? Never mind.

I've just been rereading what I've written. Been is a strange word. Beeeeen. Like bean, but not. Hm. I should think out loud-ish more often. I didn't know I could type this well. But I probably won't subject other people to one of these again. It's nonsense, pure nonsense, and if you're still reading you have my sincere apologies for continuing.

I'm waiting for the holiday (no, not holiday... "lecture free period") to end so I can get back to choir. My conductor's asked me if I'd be interested in a commission, illustrating a children's song/nursery rhyme. Let me think... YES! She says she's been looking for someone to do it for years, but apparently she never found dA, or she would've asked someone else much sooner, and probably could have got it for free. A year ago I never would have thought of showing anyone my art, and now I have to figure out nine ways to draw a mouse with a spinning wheel?! How does that work? If this actually happens, I'll upload it, if not, well, not. Speaking of which, I should probably do something with this account soon, but I just can't think of anything to do. I guess this is artist's block. Interesting. But not. I think I'll stop talking now.

Or now.

I was tagged by ~Riowolf, who tagged “whoever hasn't done this yet...”
So far, I haven’t seen anyone with a list as strange as mine.

The Rules:
The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/things/hates about yourself" and people who get tagged MUST write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things/hates as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours...

1 – I collect feathers, any kind, as long as they’re not broken. I have armloads of them. When collecting them, I stick them in my hair so they don’t get damaged, and usually wear them for the rest of the day. I once had more than 20 poking up around my head at once.

2 – Every night I say “Goodnight, world. See you in the morning. Love you”. I don’t expect to be heard, I just need to say it.

3 – I greet all animals and plants as “cousins”. This is not as silly as you might think. All living things are related. Personally I believe evolutionary theory, but it works the same for most religions: if everything was created by the same omnipotent source, then it stands to reason that, coming ultimately from the same “parent,” we are all distantly related. That’s one of the many reasons I find war, especially “holy” war, so hard to understand.
3a – I call my dogs my “brothers” because we adopted them.

~ Just so you know, the following are completely involuntary. Unfortunately, that makes me more crazy, not less.~

4 – I absorb mannerisms from books I read and shows I watch. Months after reading Kate Forsyth’s books I still occasionally say “dinna” instead of didn’t, for example, and Wolf’s Rain kept making me want to howl. After seeing some good fanart, I’ve been watching Avatar: the Last Airbender, and it’s starting to affect the way I walk and move my hands.

5 – Young of any species are “kittens”. That includes not only cats and foxes, but other animals like dogs, humans, horses and ducks. Not fish though, at least not yet.

6 – You know those dragons I draw? I think a lot like one of them, and at home, I act like it too. Sometimes it’s more wolflike, but either way I walk around on all fours and curl up on the floor with my “brothers”. My family’s so used to it they don’t comment. It sort of phases in and out a bit, but on a strong day I can feel my ears flicking forward to listen, and the wind ruffling my feathers… if I’m in a high place at the time, I really want to jump off because I’m so damn certain the wind will catch me.
6a – On a related topic, I hallucinated once during grade 12 exam block. For a whole day I was seeing dogs and cats in the strangest places...

I have more. Lots more. But you don’t want to know.

Tagging:
Anyone who hasn't done this yet.
--

As a completely unrelated side note, I have been making some of my artworks available as prints, since I'm really strapped for cash at the moment and need another $1000 by June.

And now for something completely different:

I'd like to know if anyone would be interested in commissioning me to do sketches of pets or wild animals. There are 3 weeks left of holidays; I'm bored and running out of inspiration. I'm not really expecting any replies to this, other than about the song, but it doesn't hurt to ask. If someone actually does show an interest, I'll start to think about the details.

So, this isn't your normal sketch slot thing. (hence the reason it's only three slots and not five or ten). The rules are different in that it is not based upon if you comment first on the journal but instead is based upon who the artist decides to draw for. Now, this can go through in two different ways, either the artist can go the idiotic way and merely pick their friends, or they can pick those that have the most original or most interesting character designs. Meaning that, by merely commenting in this journal and showing what you would like drawn, you are in the running for a sketch. Now, the artist must also announce a timeline for when entries are no longer taken. At that time, the artist will start to work on these sketches and whoever is chosen for a piece must also post this in their journal.

If anyone would like a sketch, the following people are open:

... And looking at sketches other people have done, it turns out that what I'm doing is apparently not, strictly speaking, a sketch. This is the first time I've been involved in one, so I don't really know what to expect. What I've been doing, is trying to get a similar quality to the original character sheet, or better if I can... and that means colour, detail, AND a background colour, with the character in a pose of the owner's choice. Now, I don't want to scrap what I've done so far, so this is no longer really a sketch slot. The way I understand it, it's more like giftart. But that doesn't change the rules, and the winners can do them however they want.

The rules:
Commenting will end on: 24 January - one more day!
The list so far:

Note: four-footed characters are preferred, in colour if possible.

Another note: I have been very bored waiting for people to answer, and have already started drawing the first two. But if your character is interesting enough, I am willing to do more than 3 slots. I'm on holidays with nothing else to do.

Third note: ... and of course once I posted that, I got a small flood of comments. Oh the irony....

First it was Naruto and Inuyasha, then FMA, which was way too short by the way, and now I've taken the advice of a whole heap of artists' signatures and started watching Wolf's Rain. The English version, because the quality of the Japanese ones wasn't good enough to read the subtitles.

The art's really good on the wolves, and I'm hoping to use it to improve my own art, but anime just isn't practical for me, especially since I don't want my family to know. The internet manga is bad enough. For movies, I can only use YouTube, and whenever I watch it, my Mum and sister complain because they think it drains the computer. We're on an 'unlimited' broadband plan, but when you use 8 gig in a month, they send you a letter, and after 10 gig it slows down to a crawl. I once watched over 100 episodes in a month and didn't get a letter, but I can't tell them that. So instead, I have to listen to the complaints.

People are still having fireworks at 9:30pm on the First. Only small ones though, which is a pity since I didn't get to see the ones last night But I wake up at 5am every day, so I have to go to bed earlier. That way, I get the Internet uninterrupted for at least 2 hours every morning, and my sister doesn't complain since she usually gets it at night.

I've just spent all my spare time today either reading or working on new artworks, and in the end, there's only one new one that I think is good enough to put on this site. I don't know why I'm so fussy, no-one looks at them anyway. Meh. Guess that's just the way I am

I was sorting through old photos on the computer, and I finally found my year 12 Retreat and Heron Island photos. They've been missing for months, and it turns out they were in 'shared documents,' not my login at all! So I've picked out some of the best ones and am now adding photo after photo to my gallery. At this rate, it'll take DAYS! But at least I found them.

And, of course, I haven't bought a single present yet. And, of course, instead of doing anything about it, I'm sitting here, adding all the old sketches I can find to this account, writing my first journal entry and hoping my parents don't come home to tell me to clean the house. Yay. Can I go home now?
