It's been a really long time since I've posted anything or updated a journal so I thought I'd share a few things...

I have a photo in my first juried art exhibit at the River Arts Center in Prairie du Sac. That's pretty exciting. I've also managed to shoot some business portraits, magazine photos and have another wedding shoot scheduled. I'm taking a trip to Santa Fe, NM to do some shooting in a week or so. Really looking forward to that, as well!

I also bought some new gear (another flash head and a smaller soft box and strip light, among other things). I've been considering volunteering as a photographer for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. Not an easy thing to do, but such a valuable gift...

I joined the Center for Photography at Madison with the idea of meeting other local photographers and shooting with them. Sadly, I haven't been out shooting much. I managed to get out and shoot some IR the other day, though. Hopefully, I'll get some more of those photos up soon, as well as some other more recent work.

Life has been busy, but wonderful. I've never felt more grounded...

My best to you all.

-Bob

Facebook

The transformation of a strong man into one who finds it painful to be moved, was difficult to watch. In a short period of time cancer ravaged my father-in-law's strong body and turned it into nothing more than a skeleton with skin stretched over it like some poorly constructed canvas frame. Fragile and useless.

Hands that built garages and outbuildings - hands that cleared land and helped so many - could now barely manage the slightest squeeze. A back and shoulders that carried so many burdens, now became burdens themselves. Clear, piercing eyes, were now dull and distant.

Yet despite your physical weakness Ken, your inner strength and resolve was evident throughout your final days. Thanks for another, and final, lesson without words.

Not only are there wonderful photographers here on dA, many of you are also wonderful people. You've encouraged me in ways I'm sure you'll never know. Hopefully, I'll get to meet some of you on a future trip abroad. China and Japan have been on my radar for some time, but I think a trip to Poland or Romania is more likely to happen.

I really enjoyed my time at the Buddhist temple.
When it rains, it pours.

Seriously! After all the snow we've had this winter, now it's raining day after day after day after day... The lake that has formed and joined my yard with my neighbors on each side, is now finding its way into my basement. Sigh...

My Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L glass is on it's way back to Canon for repair. The lens has back-focusing and auto-focusing issues. I hope they simply replace it with a great working lens rather than just recalibrate it.

And sadly, I have a full-time job again and it's getting in the way of my personal life. It involves wearing a tie.

Actually, life really is good. There's nothing I can do about the rain and it's forcing me to clean out my basement. I'm looking at buying a Canon 5D as my main camera soon and will probably get a new lens, as well. And work? Well, it's at least helping me pay for new camera equipment and studio rental. So, I hope to be posting some real studio shots soon. I've heard shooting with strobes can become addictive.

I actually sat down and put some thought into what I'd like to shoot in the studio the other day while consuming my favorite espresso drink (caffeine really is my muse). Hopefully I can realize these ideas before I have to break down and get a job.

I know dA discontinued the "Nearby Deviants" feature, but if any of you are in my area and would like to model, please contact me.

Here's a link.

Granted, she at least didn't remove my copyright, and she did post, "by RobertDwight," so it doesn't look like the user was trying to take credit for the photo. But they didn't ask my permission and they didn't link to the original. I've contacted both the user of the page (the_rising_sun) and FOTOLOG of the copyright infringement. Why I even created a FOTOLOG account so I could post comments about my own photo. That was fun!

So, I'm going through and adding the ol' dA watermark to my existing photos and will be adding my own new watermark to any future postings.

Now for more fun and exciting meanderings... I used my Alien Bees strobe yesterday for a photo shoot in my studio (aka my living room). What a fabulous piece of equipment.
This has been the strangest year for me, filled with both pain and joy. But then, which year isn't?

The Pain:
No need for details...

The Joy:
A wonderful trip to Ireland with my wife. Having the ability to take a six month break from work so I could explore photography. Being there for my children in the their time of greatest need. My first Daily Deviation. The prospect of being able to see clearly again soon. Finding out more about myself.

I've also really enjoyed meeting all of you and having the opportunity to share our thoughts and feelings about our work. How sublimely satisfying this is for me. I hope it is for you, too.

My hope is that each of us discovers more about the art in us this coming year. Embrace each moment, each emotion.

The power of our voice emerges when we have a true sense of ourselves.

Now that CS3 arrived, I'm back to working on photos.

I spent a little more time on a few photos of for the Barista Series. My friends at Ancora Coffee in Fitchburg, WI, are allowing me to photograph people in their cafe, using the store's wonderful, indirect light. In return, I agreed to photograph their baristas for display in the store and on their web site.

The purpose of the project was to help me learn about portrait photography and natural light. What better way to accomplish this than by simply doing?
The portrait series is one of baristas from a local espresso bar. I got the idea while enjoying a macchioto there one day. It's a beautiful place with wonderfully neutral colors and a wall of windows.
