Right, I got tagged twice in three days. I feel loved.

1. Tagged by ~singinghope

1.Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.
“As months passed after the sole reply to the first message transmitted from Giordano Bruno at the time of the Shapieron’s departure, he had grown increasingly suspicious that the whole thing had been a hoax — that somebody with access to the UNSA communications net had somehow arranged a message to be relayed back from some piece of UNSA hardware located out in space in the right direction.” Well, it’s not only line 4, but I can’t quote a handful of words completely out of context.

2.Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you reach?
My coffee, clock, logic textbook, piles of CDs, headphones, sunglasses, bits of paper.

3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?
Doctor Who.

4. Without looking, guess what time it is:
3pm

5. Now look at the clock. What is the actual time?
3:04pm

6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?
The rain outside. It’s beautiful.

7. When did you last step outside? What were you doing?
About 11, I think, whenever I got home from Julian’s.

8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at?
I was chatting with ~KlavierMonette

9. What are you wearing?
My black jeans, grey shirt and blue argyle vest.

10. What did you dream about last night?
I was too zonked out to dream. Certainly too zonked out to remember.

11. When did you last laugh?
A few hours ago, watching Doctor Who with Emily.

12. What are on the walls you are in?
Posters.

13.Seen anything weird lately?
My entire life is weird. That’s a good thing.

14. What do you think of this quiz?
Meh, I got tagged, I always honour tags.

15. What is the last film you saw?
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?
A nice place to live, a nice car, musical equipment, a trip around the world, and I’d keep doing what I’m doing: writing, making music and studying.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know.
I wrote a song the other day that nobody will ever see or hear. Not because it’s lousy, because it’s too personal and sensitive.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?
Give everyone a proper education.

19. Do you like to dance?
I LOVE to dance.

20. George Bush:
Living proof that democracy doesn’t work.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?
Grace or Cassandra, they're pretty names. I like Nabilah’s choice though: Hope. You also can't go wrong with flower names.

22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?
Brian John, after my grandfathers.

23. Would you ever consider living abroad?
I’m planning on living in Japan for a few years, teaching English.

24. What do you want God to say to you when you reach the pearly gates?
"Oh dear, I hadn't thought of that..." *promptly vanishes in a puff of logic*

25. Three people to tag:

The Rules
The 1st player of this 'game' starts with the topic, "6 weird habits/things/hates about yourself" and people who get tagged MUST write a journal about their 6 weird/habits/things/hates as well as state this rule clearly.
In the end you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says 'you are tagged' in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours.....

1. Biting nails. (really bad habit)

2. Nerdism, particularly Star Wars, Doctor Who, Hitchhiker’s Guide and Lord of the Rings geekdom. (weirdness, albeit good...

As always myspace messes with the quality and clips some of the sound - it works fine when I play it back on my computer - but it's still as listenable. Check it out.

EDIT 2007.06.09

I've fiddled with the mix and re-uploaded the track. The clipping is gone and while it's typical myspace-quality it's a definite improvement. It's still just a stopgap mix until I can get live guitars on it *prays for Steve and Caz to say they'll join* but I'm a lot happier with it.

Ordinarily my way of composing a piece of music is to begin with a single chord or simple chord sequence, and improvise for five or ten minutes around it. I play it back and pick out the bits that I like and weave them into the song. The first draft, as it were, is usually not very interesting for the most part; much of it is merely getting the feel for the music. On the occasion of Leap of Faith, however, I decided the improvised piece was good enough in its own right to submit to the public. It may be found on the myspace site [link] I've made for the band, which is very slowly coming together. Let me know what you think; it's not very typical of the sound the whole band will have but then neither is any other song I've composed. Our drummer has recently started his own group, "Willow Avenue", but will probably stick with us as well. I hope he will. He's damn good. *grovels*

In other news, assignments and exams suck pants. I saw The Pirates of Penzance tonight, with Anthony Warlow as Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow as the Pirate King (it makes sense, trust me) and the director standing in at the last minute for Reg Livermore as the Major-General. 'Twas a riot. I will be seeing our bassist and co-vocalist performing in Sweet Charity next weekend and then The War of the Worlds: the Musical in September and The Phantom of the Opera, again starring the peerless Mr Warlow, in October.

Roccondil (Elvish translation of Phillip), Phil (most people), Pip (high school).

6) If you had to choose a new name, what would it be?
I wouldn’t mind Roccondil, but as far as real names go I’m getting along just fine.

7) Date Of Birth:
April 8, 1988.

8) Place of Birth and Current Location:
Melbourne, Australia.
13) What’s your favorite smell?
The first drops of rain in the dry summer air.

14) Political Position?
I’m not even going to touch that one lol. I subscribe to the Ford Prefect theory of politics: that nobody who wants to rule should be allowed to but if you don’t vote for a lizard, the wrong lizard just gets in.

15) What do you prefer to drink in the morning?
Haha, I’m a coffee junkie. I still can’t get over finally having a plunger. God bless you, Mishka.

16) Hair + Eye colour:
Dark brown hair (dyed black but it’s almost back to normal) and deep blue eyes. I want to get purple transparent contact lenses. Just for a lark.

17) Do you look like anyone famous?
I’ve been told Jack Black and Obi-wan Kenobi (depending on hairstyle or facial hair). I will eventually look *exactly* like someone famous: me.

18) What do you look like?
Me. Shortish, not overly large but healthy, often laughing. Favourite outfit: black jeans, leather Julius Marlow slip-on shoes, long-sleeved black shirt, shiny white necktie, navy and blue argyle merino vest, knee-length double-breasted black leather coat.

19) Any unusual talents?
Inventing languages. Other talents include music (piano, voice and a little guitar), dancing (I love to dance), arguing and requiring very little stimulus to be outrageously happy.

20) Righty, Lefty, or Ambidextrous?
Righty.

21) Gay, Straight, Bi, or Other?
Umm, what’s other? Lol I’m straight. I’ve learned in other matters to never say never, but I like girls too much to think I’ll ever change.

22) What do you do for living?
I want to get a job as an editor or a writer; I write poetry, stories, philosophy, music and languages to keep myself busy. I’m trying to get my band properly together.

23) What do you do for fun?
See above. I want to travel the world, especially Japan, England and Scandinavia.

24) What are your favorite art materials to work with?
My MacBook.

25) What kind of materials would you like to work with?
I’d like a decent camera.

26) Have you met your grandparents?
My dad’s dad passed away a few years ago now, and his mum had a stroke a year or two before that; I still see her but she can’t speak. Mum’s parents are alive and kicking and will last many many years yet.

27) Boyfriend/Girlfriend?
Neither.

28) Crush:
What is this, high school? Not telling.

29) What celebrity would you date if you could?
Maybe Amy Lee.

30) Current worries?
No worries. There’s no point in worrying. It’s a waste of time and mental effort.

31) Favorite online Guy/Girl(s):
Nabilah! (~singinghope) I love you to little glowing shiny purple bits.

32) Favorite place to be?
Rivendell, down on the coast on the way to Lorne. It’s gone now.

33) Least favorite place to be?
A rave gig.

34) Do you burn or tan?
Neither if I can help it. I burn in the sun.

35) Ever break a bone?
Not one of my own jk, none.

36) What is your favorite cereal?
I’m boring in the morning, gimme a bowl of cornflakes and I’m set.

37) Person you cry with:
I’d feel best crying with Klaire, Katherine, Dan or (if she were physically here) Nabilah.

38) Any sisters:
None.

39) Any brothers:
Little b(r)other Andrew. Gun drummer.

Right, change of plans. Movements two and four of Five (the as-yet-unwritten ones) are giving me a bit of grief, and they are quite similar thematically, and I had an idea the other day for an additional movement: so they are condensed into one, Concealment and Blindness, which will take the place, musically, of movement two. Movement four is now called Nero, and its subject is people who ignore the bits of scientfic knowledge they don't like, or ever abandon it entirely. At the moment subjects are global-warming deniers, Creationists and Christian Scientists, which (if I follow the established pattern) leaves two more to be decided. One might be Holocaust deniers. I might have called it "Inconvenient Truths", had that name not been taken, but "Nero" fits just as perfectly. (If you don't know why this is or who Nero was, then shame on you, and learn your history.)

In other news, my PC died on me at the age of 20 months, and would have been anywhere up to $1000 to fix, so I decided to say bugger it - it hadn't exactly served me flawlessly until that point -, turn my back on the Evil Empire for good, and get myself a Mac. And thank god I did. I am liking this machine. I will call him Gary.

In other other news, I am now 19, my party was a fine success, and I got some fantastic pressies (one of which was a book I'd been looking for for years) and all-purpose vouchers . A couple people brought along their guitars, I brought out the keyboard and we had a good old jam, including the first ever performance (...) of Comfortably Dumb; me and Julian running riffs on Master of Puppets which was a lot of fun; Steve (who I want for lead guitar when the band gets going) generally upstaging the hell out of everyone; and a rendition of Hallelujah with myself on synth, piano and organ, Caz belting it out on the electric guitar, Jules and Dan duelling on the acoustics and all four of us improvising vocal harmonies. Really made you feel special. Steve was the star of the party I reckon. I approached Caz re doing the vocals on Mother and Daughter if and when, and she liked the lyrics I showed her.

Uni is going swimmingly at the moment, although I sure did appreciate my break. Hawking's Time is not. The stories aren't flowing. It might take me a few days to type up a story, but I need a dozen, maybe fifteen, and I only have about four that I'm completely happy with. And the frame tale needs fleshing out too.

w00t!

Finally I'm getting off my arse and working on Hawking's Time. The question is, why the belgium have I waited until the end of the summer holidays?!

To be fair, several chapters are shrinking, rather than growing, as I prune stuff that's redundant, or boring, or just plain wrong. Note that I'm not pruning stuff that's merely irrelevant - The Journal of Niloc Moncö, Book I of the series, is in large part an absurdist tale, and serves mostly to set up the main characters. The actual story in Book I has little or nothing to do with the actual story of Hawking's Time the series, and so if I got rid of everything that's irrelevant (in the larger scheme of things) I'd be down to about 5000 words. But I'd also lose all the jokes and most of what makes the story interesting, and be left with three solid chapters of exposition about a plot that hasn't happened yet.

Another branch of the identity that is Roccondil Rínon has come into existance; after several months' quiet persistence from a small group of mates, I've got me a livejournal space. [link] Most future outpourings will go there rather than here, though arty ones will still find themselves on dA. As regards Hawking's Time, ideas and such will pop up here, while rantings about writer's block will probably end up there - about which see my first posting.

Meh. I'm just filling up time now, the cricket's finished (Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!) and I still can't motivate myself to work on the novel.

Don't know how long I'll keep it up actually, depends on the reaction I get. I'll still spend more time on dA, it's more my thing.

Damnit, I should finish Hawking's Time begore I even consider other projects. But this idea is too perfect to pass up.

I like my dystopias: some of my favourites are 1984, Brave New World, The Light of Other Days, and We Will Rock You, and I'm trying to track down a copy of We, the granddaddy of them all.

The idea of parallel universes, explored briefly in Hawking's Time, gives me an idea for what many might regard as the "ultimate" dystopia: a novel set in 1980s Nazi Germany. I shall call it Dyschronia, after the French uchronie, meaning a utopia in an alternative history.

Let me first say, so that no one is under any illusions regarding the hypocrisy of what I'm doing, that I absolutely loathe the Scissor Sisters' version of Pink Floyd's classic Comfortably Numb. I know Pink Floyd themselves approved. I probably would too, if I was getting money for it. To me it seems utterly tasteless. And before I heard it, I had enjoyed some of the Scissor Sisters' music.

What I'm doing now is writing a parody of the very same song. More a pastiche, I suppose, than a parody, because it isn't meant to be comic. Its subject matter is brainwashing, propaganda, censorship and the whole "ignorance is bliss" thing. Of course, it is called Comfortably Dumb, using dumb in both its senses.

It's not quite finished, but when it is, I'll post it. The last verse is giving me a bit of grief.

David and Roger: forgive me. I know not what I do.

Well, they promised me a piano by Christmas!

My folks did, that is. Finally went along to Billy Hyde today and picked it out: a Roland FP-5 stage piano. Why can't all the music places in Melbourne be accessible?! From Blackburn to bloody Cranbourne...oy! Still, I got what I wanted in the end. Though it won't be delivered til about Christmas.

I really should be studying for exams... Thinking counts as study for philosophy doesn't it?
