Mood: Devastated...

On Christmas morning, at 5:30am, my lifelong best friend, and best man at my wedding, Christopher Alan Zoumbilys, died at the wheel of his car, aged 21 years old.

He was speeding, doing 150km/h coming around a roundabout in McCraken St, Essendon, and crashed into a tree, killing him instantly.

He had his cousin and soulmate, Nick, in the passenger seat. He escaped with head injuries, but lived.

The tree Chris hit was right outside the fence of our school.

I loved my mate. He was my brother. For ten years, he has always been there for me, making me laugh. I could always rely on him for anything. He would move heaven and earth for me in an instant. But not just for me. Chris would do anything for anyone. Doesn't matter who you are, if he called you a friend, he would do so for life.

I am very proud to claim myself his best mate. It is an honoured and privileged position, and I will forever remember my brother in my heart.

Chris, I know you are up there mate, sitting at the right hand of the Lord Christ. Your name means Bearer Of Christ, and you beared Christ for every man woman and child who ever met you.

Please don't crash God's laptop though mate, we don't need an angry God right now

Say G'day to your grandfather for me. Say G'day to my grandmother Betty for me, she loved you too mate, could never get her head around your wacky antics but loved you nevertheless.

I will see you one day, I'll be eighty or ninety years old, a great-great-grandfather, and I will hug you and tell you how miserable my life was without your laughter and cheekiness. Then I will turn to the Lord, and he will have some mighty explaining to do to me, to make me understand finally why I had to lose you.

Until that day, I promise to look after your family.

May you rest in peace, and go with God.

May God see your purity of heart, and bless you.

I'm sure he has already mate.

Your friend, now and forever,

Ryan. Skip. D-oh-nut. Stretch. Dopey.

Brother.

_______________________________________

On Saturday 6th November, 2004, I awaited my bride at Centenary Park, WA, who looked absolutely stunning in her simple white dress. She looked totally like an angel, and I was so nervous I kept telling the minister I was going to puke in the lake we were standing beside. Thankfully, I didn't.

I did, however, listen to my buddies' great idea of hitting the piss the night before! Add to that total stupidity, I got into a fight with an ex-girlfriend, who was obviously shitty I was getting married and was happy, and she punched me just below the eye. To make matters even worse, she had a ring on, and tore a chunk out of my face!

So I patched it up with one of those little invisible bandaids that aren't really that invisible, and hoped for the best. I prayed all night that Simone would understand, and not beat me further for ruining every one of our wedding shots.

And then, on his white horse, came Prince Photoshop to the rescue...

As a consequence of this, it will be a while before I get all my wedding photos up on dA, because I have to edit the chunk out of my cheek!

Oh well, I guess it'll be a story to tell one day. I told our guests I walked into a tree though, because telling them your ex hit you the night before your wedding day is not really that classy...

On the dA front, I've been incredibly dull, boring and most of all idle lately, and for that I apologise. At least now the wedding's over, I reckon I could get a year's RPL for any logistics and management course in the world! I had family fighting, cousins going nuts, the whole lot, plus a wedding that was looking like costing about a grand more than we could afford... All up though, we did it pretty well, and had an awesome day.

I'd like to pass on one message to all you bachelors out there: If you think marriage sounds scary, try telling your bride you have half your face missing on the morning of her wedding! If she doesn't have Fat Tony come around and "fix" you up for ruining her entire life, she loves you... marry her...

(Yes, my beautiful wife loves me. She was so fantastic about it all... I love you Simone, if you're reading this...)

________________________________________ _____

Let's put this momentuous occasion in some sort of perspective, shall we? Let's see... the last time I was on the Internet on a regular basis, was back in January, 2002! It has really been that long.

Since then, I've joined dA, maintained my profile and accomplished my tiny amount of pageviews utilising internet cafes and the ISP accounts of close friends and relatives, or, by using the Defence network onboard my ship. Unfortunately, they banned dA as a site "Unessential for military purposes", or something like that.

So the other day, I joined up with dodo, and now have internet access whenever I want it! So look out, I should be uploading lots of photos, as soon as I sort it all out and get an "assembly line" running so I can process and present some of my better material...

But, anyway, I'm just happy to now have a regular access method to dA, the only reason I use the internet is mainly for this site anyway, besides some banking...

And to all those whose work I haven't yet commented on, or journals I've not acknowledged, I apologise and hereby vow to make a better effort, now that I have the means to do so.

Look after yourselves.

________________________________________ _____

I have been able to take a very few photos, but unfortunately my laptop is still being fixed, so I can't upload them yet. It's due back very soon, and once I'm back on my photographic feet again, I'll be uploading shit-tins of them. I have photos from Christmas Island, Melbourne, Perth, all to share with you wonderful people very soon. So please stand by me, and bare with me...

I also noticed, I have 1,205 pageviews!! Fucken Aye!! That's a big deal for me, I've been here for a while now, and it's taken me months to get that 1st K.

Once I get my laptop and internet back up and working, I'll be commenting and viewing everyone's galleries, but for now I'm at a smelly LANworld centre, a place for video game nerds to stink out with their unwashed bodies, so I'm kinda keen to get out of here. I'll see you all in good time, until then, be good to each other, and keep supporting those awesome artists on here at the moment.

Firstly, my up top trip has been cut dramatically short. I have been found sleepwalking on the ship, and being as it's a warship with lots of dangerous things about, I am forbidden to sleep onboard. As a consequence, I have been sent back to a shore base, and am classified Medically Unfit For Sea, with a possibility (or rather a near certainty) of being Medically Discharged from the Navy!

Add to that, my divisional staff are all convinced that I'm faking it!! They believe I am just trying to desert the ship so I can be at home! So not only have I lost $8000 a year Seagoing Allowance, been stuck in a boring shit job on land, lost my trip, put off my promotion indefinitely, but apparently now I am also a traitor to my country!!

On the good side of life, I am having a baby!! Well, not me, that would be medical history, but my beautiful and darling fiance Simone, is having to me a brand new little bub. We have already chosen a girl's name: Anneliese Betty Moore. Pretty huh??

I got home, and got a bit of a kick to see I have 991 pageviews! Nearly at my first thou'!! I also have about 145 unreviewed DeviantWatch submissions, and have found a new look to dA that I kinda like. So with all these new things to stress about, babies coming, me losing my job and being labelled a traitor, when in fact I'm quite innocent, it's not my fault I sleepwalk, it all means it may take a little while to go through all of these deviations and leave appropriate comments, so please bear with me while I catch up on civilian life...

I would just like to clear up, that I am not a traitor, and I love my country dearly. The last thing I ever wanted was to be discharged... So don't go thinking I am a treacherous person, because I'm really not...

Anyway, have fun everybody...

And to my darling fiance, ~Sexy-Simone84 who'll be reading this probably, I love you sweetheart...

________________________________________ _____

Censorship And What It Means For Me

The dickheads who manage the Australian Defence Force internet service have decided deviantART is an inappropriate site to be displayed on ADF-provided terminals. This means, of course, that for the next four bloody months, I will be mostly unable to post to dA at all, given as I am sailing for this period of time to South East Asia! I am very shitty at this development, but shall be hunting down cafes and access points in Singapore, Japan and Manila when I arrive at each port. Don't worry, mates, I'll be straight onto it ASAP.

Being A Daddy 101

As you all may know by now, I'm marrying the beautiful and delectable Simone, otherwise known as ~ Sexy-Simone84. You may not know, however, that she has a darling little bloke named Xander, who turned one year old last Thursday!!

This has meant my crash course in being a daddy, which has proven eventful, stressful, hair-raising... but for the most part, it's been the most enjoyable, and satisfying, thing I've ever done. I change his nappy, feed him, put him to bed and collect him when he screams that he's awake, and he repays the favour by smiling the sweetest little three-toothed smile in the world, and by calling me.... get this everyone...

H E Â C A L L E D Â M E Â D A D ! ! !

I was so rapt. Altogether, things are going rather well for my newfound fatherhood...

Wedding Plans

Well, the date has been set: March 19th, 2005. It shall be a Saturday morning wedding in a beautiful little garden known as Harold Boas Gardens in Perth. The bride shall be wearing an exquisite Be-Joy wedding dress that cost me $2000!

I'm going to try and get the wedding photos onto dA, but bear with me on that one...

South East Asia, the Third

On Friday morning, I shall be leaving once more for yet another South East Asian trip. We will be visiting Singapore, Manila, Tokyo, Port Hedland, Christmas Island and Ashmore Reef. The trip will take us four months, so my beautiful and darling fiance shall be alone for quite some time. I hope she can manage... I'm going to miss her so very, very much.

I can honestly say guys, that I'm totally in love. Every time she looks at me, every time she speaks, I feel the urge to grab her, hold her close and tell her how totally stunning she is. I will be posting a pic of her soon, just so you can all see how wonderful she is. She makes me look at life in a very different way than I'm used to, and makes me want to be a better bloke. I've quit drinking, and contemplating hitting the gym, so I can look 100% for her, and make her proud of me.

We've had a few little quibbles, like any couple does, but we always get through it, and sometimes I wonder just how I got so lucky. How does such a beautiful lady wind up with a bloke like me?

________________________________________ _____

Alongside at Garden Island, WA, and just trying to get my life sorted out before I sail again on about the 12th July to head "Up Top", yet AGAIN!! Now, call me picky, hard to please and downright selfish, but three trips to Asia spanning 7 to 8 months total in about 12 is just too much! I'd just gotten back into the swing of normal life, catching back up with TV shows, the news, my love life... Now I've gotta let it all go again, while I stooge around Japan, Manila and Singapore in a tin can 118m long and 14 wide.

Maybe that sounds great, and I sound spoiled, travelling the world 'n all... but I tell you, it's not the P & O Fair Princess, and it's no luxury cruise.... Imagine 4 months of sailing with 12 days off, and 3 of those twelve at least taken up by duty, and when you finally get off the boat, you're not allowed in half the pubs because of "perceived local threats". In other words, we're the threats to the local's pubs...

Love Life

We're sailing along quite nicely, Simone (~Sexy-Simone84) and I, even through rough seas.... She's great, and I love being with her, and it can be hard sometimes, but let's face it, if it wasn't hard it wouldn't be worthwhile...

I don't think she's looking forward to me going away either, but we'll survive it, I think, and be the better for it...

Just killing time in Cockburn Sound, near Garden Island, WA. We have sat here for two days, doing nothing much at all. At sea just for the sake of being at sea, methinks... but oh well. We have nerdy scientists aboard doing defence-related trials, and they need to be done, so here I am, bored shitless.
In the civilian areas of my life, my time with Simone has proven even more enjoyable than I imagined, and we've really hit it off great! I know she'll probably read this, her devnick is ~ Sexy-Simone84 but she has no art or anything uploaded yet. She has the cutest little boy, and we're going out again this weekend, hopefully I can treat her to a great time...
Latest News

I have finally found a cool chick to be with, her name's Simone, and she's a stunner, boys, a stunner...

We've been mates for a little while now, and have decided we like the same stuff, and have similar intentions for the future, so we're gonna see that future together, if all goes well...

Anyway, it has made me a much happier deviant, and hopefully (if she'll allow me) I can post some nice photos of her and her gorgeous little boy, and me, doing stuff in nice places.

Ship Movements

Well, Arunta has a few weeks alongside (at last) before we sail for South East Asia, on a four month deployment.

We are going to Kobe, Tokyo (both in Japan), Singapore, Manila in Philippines, and a few other ports I neither know nor care about. I want to see Japan, and am keen to go shopping for a new D70 in Singapore, but besides that am not really looking forward to this deployment. I'd much rather stay home with Simone (see Latest News) but as luck would have it, we'll just have to cope apart for a little while.

I'm not as worried as I'd normally be, because I know she's worth the wait, and I'm convinced she's the chick for me. I know she'll wait for me, and that we'll be happy once I'm back home.

The Football

The Doggies are not doing too well this year (AFL, Aussie rules football) but hopefully we can pick up our game a bit and get to winning points...

Well, that's all I have to update you all on thus far.

Have fun, keep posting, and don't forget me.

________________________________________ _____
We're now alongside at Rockingham, Western Australia. I never realise how much I really love my country until I leave it. Just the smell alone. You can smell Australian soil. It smells finer than any other on Earth. It smells of people out in their backyards, roasting a barbeque, or taking their kids to the local footy match. It smells of meat pies at the Aussie Rules footy game, the local bottle shop selling glorious, glorious beer. And most of all, it smells like Bundaberg Rum, the rum God himself drinks...
Now maybe I can get some more photos posted up here, and get around to commenting on some absolutely wonderful work happening here since I've been absent/passive.

Deviants of note are *ButterflyLady and *SpiralSpring who have turned out some wonderful work while I was gone.

I bought myself an Apple iPod in Singapore. Cost me about $400 Australian. I got myself a 15Gb one, because quite frankly spending the extra $300 and getting a 40Gb seemed ridiculous to me. Where the hell am I going to find more than 10,000 songs? I'm having a hard enough time finding the 3,000 songs or more mine holds. I've already put just about every CD I own on it, plus those of my shipmates. And that only numbers 873!! Jesus...

I love it though. Awesome bit of kit. I'm now listening to Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It". I've got just about everything on here, from AC/DC to Marilyn Manson, to Garth Brooks, to Kylie Minogue, to Alice Cooper, to Madonna, REM, Rob Zombie, Hunters And Collectors, David Bowie (seen him live!! have his guitar pick framed on my wall. just had to add that bit), Cold Chisel, to name just a slight few...

Anyway, I'm on duty tonight, and won't get off until 0740 tomorrow morning. Upon which, I'll be rocking the local pub 'til nightfall...

Ahhh, a sailor's life for me.... A'harrrgh!!

________________________________________ _____
We're less than 500 nautical miles away now, and steadily closing.

I've just spent the last six weeks on deployment to South East Asia. We went on a Navigation Week, where we transited from Perth to Darwin following the coast the entire way, in order to train up new Navigators for the rest of the fleet. They were arrogant pigs, and we had a hard week.

As soon as we got to Darwin the trip got better though. We had a few days shore leave, which we spent drinking and cruising around the relaxed and breezy city.

We sailed to Singapore, via the Indonesian Archipelago, which meant closing up a pirate sentry every night. Yes, there are pirates still operating in many waters in Asia. They prey on merchant ships mainly, but there have been instances in the past where they have either mistakenly or boldly attacked foreign warships. So we close up a sentry, (me) whose job is to wear a flak jacket, carry a F88 Austeyr assault rifle, 60 rounds of live ammunition, a night-vision scope, six flares, two radios, a helmet and a whistle. A lot of weight to carry when you stand there for six hours in the dark, alone.

From Singapore we participated in Exercise Bersama Shield, a joint exercise with the Singaporean, Malaysian, British, and Australian Navies. The Thais also had a go, but that was only for one day.

We came in to Kuantan for a brief port visit, and from there sailed home. We are now approaching Perth at a great rate of knots, but the seas are rough and heavy, and quite a few of us (myself included) have fallen seasick more than once the last few days...

Anyway, I hope to get on here some time next week when I'm ashore and catch up with all my comments, check out all your deviations, and otherwise get up to speed on the dA world.

Until then, that's me...

________________________________________ _____

I'm currently cruising around north of Australia, on my ship, the HMAS Arunta. We're in a more relaxed state than previous months, and settling into what we call Cruising Watches.

We stopped off at Dampier for fuel, and we're on our way to Darwin, in the Northern Territory. I love Darwin, and am over the moon to be visiting my favourite port. The place is just the perfect Australian life. Thongs, heat, beer, board shorts, crocodiles and football. What more could any Australian man or woman want??

I hope to be taking plenty of photographs in Darwin, and there's plenty to photograph. Not right away, when you first look at the place. But after a while, you learn where the images are. They are where they always are. Everywhere around you.

So I'll be doing my best to get these (if they turn out purdy) onto deviantART. dA is the only place I surf to, besides my internet banking and such. I don't bother with the rest of the web. I don't always have time, as the Navy life is a demanding one. But I always find the time to jump on the LAN and have a quick look at my messages at least. I do my best to comment on others' work as much as possible, but again, I don't get a lot of free time.

Anyway, I hope *SpiralSpring is enjoying her subscription, * ButterflyLady is enjoying photographing Tieia (*PilotsAngel), and all of you keep giving me more reasons to crawl out of my rack an hour early in the mornings (or nights) and check my messages. Until then, catch ya later...

________________________________________ _____
I did get some shots of a submarine with it's periscope up (a rare sight, believe it or not), some shots of a few of my shipmates, and some of the HMAS Adelaide. I know I've been harping on about it a bit, and I apologise for that, but it really hit me to the core.

But today, whilst looking around on DA, (ever the source of sudden enlightenment that it is) I stumbled across an artist that I've admired for many years. I first came across his work when downloading skins for winamp, and have been a bit of a fan since.

His name is ~fli7e, and he is one of the best, and most known, winamp skinners on the Net. Between his work and misery/deaddreamer's, you need no other skin taking up valuable hard disk space, because no other can match theirs for quality and just sheer ingenuity...

Now, also for many years I've seen his work ripped by every little dickhead " artist" from Sydney to San Francisco and back again.

Despite all this, admirers of his work can still pick who the wannabe skinner ripped it from.

So that's what I want to aim for in my work. Not only nice images, but something so distinctive and reflective of me that if you did find it in the galleries of the likes of Lee, you would say, "Well, I don't know about this <insert name of copyright thief here> character, but this looks like a piece by Roger Moore"...

What do we all think about that? Can it be done? In today's world of mass-media and billions of images flying around the Net, can we produce something that screams "This was done by me" and could not possibly be by anyone else?

________________________________________ _____
If not for her breadth of talent, variety of areas she submits to, and sheer quality of her work, then it must be for that great devID of hers, which I laugh at every time I see it. A sexy woman with a great sense of humour, it seems...
A recent discovery, *ButterflyLady is a great portrait artist who uses the same model quite frequently (my number 6). She has a different way of seeing things...

Tieia is not just a beautiful looking woman, she's also a photographer! And of hard, charry military hardware nonetheless!! Just struck that magical chord in my heart right there...

7.
fee-clochette
This girl's photos are "da bomb"!! Just check out her colours and location alone... Awesome.

8.
Jomina
Ira Robinson by name, this man submits at least one new work every day I log on here... With 181 deviations under his belt so far, I'm sure it's only a matter of hours before his next work, which, if typical, shall consist of a finely thought out pose, exceptional lighting and a real meaning and intent to the shot.

9.
:iconphotography-challenge: Photography-Challenge
This place is a great idea. You try out each new month's challenge, which usually just involves taking a photo with three specified items/ideas within it. Not only do you have to think of a great way to present these three things, but you also have to give the shot something spectacular in itself. Not easily done...
I think this shows just how easily your work can be ripped off here. I upload all my work always thinking the same thing:

"If I upload this photo / artwork I've spent time and effort creating, will I get the credit and opinion I've earnt? Or will someone keen on feeling cool and loved take my work and say, 'Look at what I did'."

I have never claimed a work not mine, so can only see things from the point of view of the owner of the image. I would feel robbed. After all, it is MY heart, my soul, and my thoughts and dreams in my work. Someone taking it is like someone taking my soul and saying THIS IS NOW MINE, like it or lump it.

At first I didn't believe it. I sent Lee a note saying that he could write me personally, and gave him my address, as I honestly believed that he could not be capable of doing it.

I have now seen solid proof. I have seen a work I loved done by someone else, with no credit to that person. That person's imagination and hard work has been taken from them to satisfy another's need for acceptance.

What did bother me the most, however, is how easily this can be done. This then leads on to the argument: "Who's work is it REALLY??" whenever you see a great piece.

Does this mean, that if a photographer who may have taken average images in the past stumbles upon a great image by pure luck, that we should be skeptical, and wonder if they ripped it off??

I used to write my name in a small area of the image using a colour similar to the background but a few steps off, and small pixel-sized font, to mark my work. But I don't have time for that anymore. It takes much too long.

Will placing my name at the bottom right corner help? No. The would-be thief shall just crop the image. So how do we protect our images whilst still allowing them to be viewed unobstructed??

And how do I prove that my work is my work??

Another point that bothered me is the argument used that "each of his pieces was too unique".

This worries me, because my work is unique also. I like to try many different and varied techniques and subject matters in my photography, as I'm only just learning. I have photos from sunsets on tropical islands to cool rivers at dawn, to roundabouts in the midst of traffic in Vietnam.

Will someone look at my work, see no common theme, and accuse me of plagiarising my own work??

See my gallery and you'll see what I mean. I assure you that every single piece is my own. I shall provide the original discs (I have a CD Mavica) with the photos if you like. I shall even take you to the locations (except the Asia ones of course) and show you exactly how and where it was shot.

Is this the only way to protect myself. I hope not...

--------------
Take acceptance only in the work YOU do. Love and praise for someone else's work is love and praise for someone else.

In case you're interested, the Arunta is a 3,500+ tonne warship, equipped with SeaSparrow missiles and a 5inch gun. I'm a Combat Systems Operator, specialising in Electronic Warfare.

Anyway, I'm back at work again. We have the Internet at work, but it's very temperamental, and a lot of the time, when we go to sea, the internet is not always available to us. Sometimes that's because it's broken, but mostly because we cannot radiate our radio equipment for fear of letting everyone know where our ship is. It's an anti-intelligence measure. What this means is I can receive emails and such but cannot transmit.

What this means for DA is that I can only submit at certain times, both when it's available and I have the time.

I hope, however, to keep those entries coming. We'll have to see how things pan out...

Ocean Grove is kinda cool, but I don't think I'll ever go back there again for NYE. My friend and I had a fight, and I ended up kicked out of a caravan in the middle of the night.

I have paid heed all your comments about the size of the Maribyrnong Panorama image, and I'm trying to downsize it, but MS Paint can't handle it and I don't have any other software.

Anyway, I am working on it...

Aside from all that, I joined a few deviantART clubs today...

~photo-challenge

This club runs monthly "challenges" to produce a photo based on the criteria they give. This sounds like a lot of fun, and something different, so I joined. Also, I reckon it's probably an excellent way to improve your skills, shooting stuff that's not familiar. Step out of your comfort zone, so to speak.

~australia

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oy! Oy! Oy!

Well, I love my country to death... 'Nuff said.

I still am unsure how these clubs work, as I'm new to all this, but we shall see with time...

I decided at about 3:30am to go a-hunting photos, and wound up at St. Augustines, an old church around the corner from where I'm currently staying. The church is nice, but when I got there I thought, "No, it's all wrong" for a sunrise shot. Wrong angle, wrong setting, wrong everything.

So, on one of my crazier moments, I decided to travel about 20 kilometres to a small little park besides the Canning Street Bridge in Maribyrnong.

I wandered along the bank of the river until I found a good spot.

I also tried something new this morning. I decided I'd try one of those makeshift panoramas by rotating my camera and then joining all the images together.

So I took my tripod, which has bubble levels and a bearing circle on it, and set it up. As I was rotating the camera for each shot (5 degrees each time) I did it at regular intervals, and the lighting rose dramatically. I don't know what it will look like when joined together (I don't have PS8 with me) but from what I can see, I should end up with a full 360 degree panorama that starts in relative darkness at one end and becomes day by the other. Should be interesting, and I'll post the results when they come.

Well, trendsetters, it's the end of 2003. It's been quite an eventful year for little ol' Roger.

I've joined my ship, seen a bit of the world, grabbed some photos, made war on pretend enemies everywhere, and basically had a mixed year. By mixed I mean it was good, but some parts left wanted.

With New Year's Eve coming, I must make a decision all young males face all over the world at this troubled time: " Where am I pissing up this year?"

I had on my shortlist of Roger Moore's Venues Of Partying Down a few different places...

Place #1 Melbourne City, on the banks of the Yarra.
I thought about maybe taking my camera in to get some photos of the festivities, but figured if I did it would only be trashed, and the city does get kinda packed out.

Place #2 Home, a few mates around for a barbie.
Got no mates . No, seriously though, I've done this one WAY too many times for count, and it gets a bit old.

Place #3 The Mountains Of Peru, helping poor widdle orphans.
Ummm, no....

Place #4 Ocean Grove, surfing town on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria.
I reckon this is the place for me. Somewhere quiet yet boasting a party to rock your socks off, somewhere familiar yet seldom visited, and a nice cruisy few days on the beach, kicking up in the sun and surf.

The Verdict: Place #4, Ocean Grove for me!!

Phew! That decided, I won't be posting for a few days, so if you're thinking, " Hey, where's Roger?" he's drinking copious amounts of piss, teaching the young surfers how to drink like a sailor, bedding every female object in sight, passing out unconscious on the beach, full of tequila and the rushing blood of a man on the Wicked Water.

I'll still be here for a few days, but thought, seeing as you'll all miss me so much (..........*cough*.............*cricket in the background*......................*trees rustle*...............) I thought I'd warn yas.

Well, I know how to in PS, but all of the images posted here are genuine, pure photography. All I've done is crop a few of them, add a border here or there, and that's it. I did all of that in Microsoft Paint, as my aunt's computer is quite featureless.

I do miss my Photoshop 7, but when it comes to my photos I mainly use PS only for a few minor colour touchups, to take a bad element out of a photo (like a tree in the wrong place or something) or small insignificant things like that.

I really do believe in presenting photos as they are. If you do want to manipulate them, I reckon the decent thing is to at least tell people they've been manipulated.

The reason I try not to do it is because, with technology the way it is today, and movies like The Matrix commonplace, when you show someone a photo and say you "touched it up", no matter how much work you do, someone will always assume the magic lay in Photoshop, and not in your own skill with a computer or, for that matter, a camera.

Because of this I try to get the results I'm after at the source, at the camera, so that when you see a nice photo of mine, you can say, "That's how the lens saw it".

I've just been on a fairly long deployment to South East Asia and Operation Relex at Christmas Island, both fulfilling a "presence" and guarding Australian waters against illegal vessels either fishing or giving illegal immigrants a ride.

I took some great photos, which I am still trying to sort out and therefore can only post about three or four at the moment. I am hoping to post the rest soon though.

During our trip, we went to Darwin, Christmas Island, Langkawi (Malaysia), Singapore, Bangkok (Thailand), and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon, in Vietnam). I grabbed a decent amount of piccies from each port, except for Singapore, of which I took a total of six crap photos. I will be returning to Singapore again next year though, so it's no great loss.

Anyway, I'm glad to finally be home, and I think I will most definitely appreciate our easy way of life over here. We have things so much luckier than many...
