The submission period has officially ended for the June contest (seeing as June is over) so it's time to begin voting (which lasts until the fifth). I'm happy to say that we've got quite a healthy competition with lots of different submissions. These are all voting eligible submissions for the June contest, just take a look through em all, pick your favorite, and send me a note with the title VOTE. In the body of the message simply put (title of submission you are voting for) by (artist who made submission). Voting is open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they are a member, and contest participants are free to vote too, you can even vote for yourself if you want to. First off, the theme for our monthly contest is Jack-O-Lantern. Everyone should feel free to interpret that as they will, be it a pumpkin with a face, a hideous monster with a jack-o-lantern for a head, an abstract interpretation of a jack-o-lantern, or any other idea you my have had that I just didn't think up. If you want to submit a picture for the contest just send me a note with a link to the picture and tell me what theme you want for next month so that I'll know if your picture wins.

I briefly introduced myself in my last message, but, I thought that it would be interesting for some of you to introduce yourselves. I think that an important part of having a club is the human interactivity in the club, which is why I think this would be good. I'm not going to force anyone to introduce themselves, but, I think it would be a great new start for SPIRIT-Halloween.

Lastly, I do want to mention once again that we are having our first monthly contest, the theme is Jack-O-Lantern. Feel free to interpret that as you will, be it a pumpkin with a face, a hideous monster with a pumpkin for a head, or even your abstract interpretation of a Jack-O-Lantern.

Finally, I have written out a charter of sorts which will appear at the end of all club journal entries spelling out what passes for rules here. I'm hoping to hear from many of you in the near future, and hoping we'll have lots of submissions both normal and for the contest soon.

It seems that SPIRIT-Halloween has been dormant for months now, and I feel that this truly is a shame, however, I want to look towards the future and not the past, and I want to take SPIRIT-Halloween and all of it’s members towards a new level of interactivity, creativity, and just plain old fun. I am a horror fanatic, I gorge myself on movies, books, comics, even music, and Halloween is a very special time of the year for me, because it is a celebration of all of the horror that I love. But, Halloween is not just about the Samhain side of things which interest me, it is also about candy, pumpkins, and little kids in costumes, and I want that to be expressed too.

Due to it’s months of dormancy, SPIRIT-Halloween is somewhat of a mess, and I intend to begin cleaning it up as quickly as possible, getting a membership back together, and getting things going. But, just to start things off with a bang, I would like to begin monthly contests. There will be a theme every month, SPIRIT-Halloween members can submit their work for the contest by sending me a note with a link to the piece they wish to be submitted and a subject line SUBMISSION, and can vote for their favorite work by sending me a note with the name of their favorite of the submissions and a subject line VOTE. I would also love to see lots of submissions not related to monthly contests, same way to submit simply send me a note with the subject line SUBMISSION and a link to the work you wish to have submitted.

For anyone who wishes to join SPIRIT-Halloween (And I do hope there are lots of you), joining is also easy, simply send me a note with the subject line JOIN and add us as a friend. I’ll add you to the line up of members. As a second note, there will be a hierarchy (of sorts) of members, the difference being between those who are contest winners, those who are regularly submitting members, those who have submitted at least one work, those who only vote, and those who are only members. I hope to see lots of you quickly ascend the ranks.

Getting back to the monthly contest, it is time that I begin speaking of our first monthly contest. The theme is Jack-O-Lantern, and I am open to a wide variety of submissions, you want to send me a pumpkin with a carved out face, go for it, if you want to draw a terrible monster with a pumpkin for a head then do that, if you want to send me your abstract interpretation of what a Jack-O-Lantern is, then go ahead and do that too, and if you’ve got some other idea that you feel would fit in but that I wasn’t creative enough to think up, then send that in too, because I’d love to see it. I’m also open to all forms of media, take a photo, draw with pencils, pens, crayola crayons, paint with oil, watercolors, acrylic, whatever strikes your fancy. I’m also more than happy to see digital works made with any program you choose, be it MS Paint, Paint Shop Pro, or Adobe Photoshop, it doesn’t make a difference to me what you made it with, I just want to see it submitted here. Submissions are due here by June 30th, and I shall end voting on July 5th and announce the winner, who shall be the proud recipient of a position in the top rank of SPIRIT-Halloween membership, one mark for their contest victory, and shall have their submission proudly displayed in the Featured Deviations box.

Lastly, regarding submissions, and the fears some may have of making them, I want to encourage those in all skill levels in whatever medium they enjoy to work in to make submissions, regardless of whether you’re a world class artist, or if you couldn’t draw a straight line to save your own life. I’m certainly not the world’s greatest artist, but, I am not it’s worst either, and I know from experience that you do not improve in skill simply by wishing it, and that just because you didn’t paint something worthy of Van Gogh or Escher at age 3 that doesn’t mean that you don’t have talent and that you can’t ever get it. Regardless of what anyone says, the more you draw, paint, or whatever you love to do, the better you get at it. And secondly, I know that just because a painting doesn’t rival the Mona Lisa that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have value. All works have value, the deeply symbolic, and those which do nothing but examine the simple aesthetic of what they portray, have something to say, and something to show us. In order to join the club, you must send a note titled 'JOIN' or leave a comment stating that you want to join and you must DevWatch the club. We'd prefer you'd submit art upon joining, but it isn't required.

To submit a deviation to our gallery, you must include a link to that deviation in a note titled 'SUBMIT'. All works submitted must be Halloween related. If the work requires a 'Mature Content' filter, than don't waste your time because it wont be submitted.
