If haven't notice the recent poll a old idea has surfaced again which is now most likely dubbed as Change or some synonym that sound less corny like Alteration
how does it work?
- Characters with the alteration mechanic can replace a duelist with same name with either no alteration mechanic or a lower alteration number.
- in the case of bid of a duelist in a game Characters with the alteration mechanic the player that plays said card doesn't have to bid on a card with no alteration mechanic or a lower alteration number.
- you can't turn back the hands of time once a Character with alteration is played. only when that duelist goes to discard pile can a copy of a duelist with no alteration mechanic or a lower alteration number can be played

----------------
now that though be cleared i can introduce new possible features to the game:

Blast Counters & Burn Counters!
these two are mainly introduced now because lot more duelist are using fire and explosives these days.

Blast Counters are used to represent the volatile items a duelist can use. these don't regenerate after the fight without help of cards. some cards may come into play with these counters on them, including some duelists; other cards may require these counter in addition to activate costs.

Burn Counters, on the other hand, used as damage modification. when dueling your duelist will take an addition 1 point of damage after regular damage is calculated. these counter are remove one at a time at beginning of effected players next upkeep.
---------------
as for other changes such as, now the use of combat is mostly being replaced with duel (i.e. dueling zone and dueling phase). this change occurring to fit with the part name of the games name Samurai Duelers League.

if there are any questions thoughts or ideas relating to the subjects cover in this journal please comment. Max of 4 Duelist Sets (52 Cards).

Objective: To bring your opponent over 21 hits of damage.

How To Play: A Samurai's Cunning consists of one on one battles between two players and their Duelists. Both players start by selecting a Duelist from their Set and placing it face up. They then take 5 Twists from their Set and place them face up in front of their Character card. Finally, they select 7 Skills from their Set and keep them in hand. These cards are the only ones able to be used for that round. Remember the Golden Rule though, rules on card > rules in game.

From there, players decide initiative via Rock Paper Scissors/d6/whatever. Initiative determines who is able to act first; it switches each round. This is also where Will is gained. After that the players proceed to the Rising Action, where they can play and refresh Twists, play Character abilities and regain Skills. From there play proceeds to the Combat Phase, where Skills and Twists can be used. Then there is the Falling Action, where Twists and Character abilities can be played. This is also where any timed abilities tick down. Once that is completed, the win condition is checked, the player's turn ends and initiative goes to the player to the left. This continues until the objective is met.

Card Types: There are three major types of cards in Samurai's Cunning: Duelists, Twists, and Skills

-Duelist: This is the OC that you control. They may come from different artists, have different backstories and all that jazz but here they all have three things in common. These are a name, an ability, and a Damage Modifier. The name is self-explanatory, the ability is a special trick that aids them in battle, and the Damage Modifier determines the final damage a player takes in combat. A high negative number means less damage, while a high positive number means more damage. Remember though, more damage taken means more Will to play with.

-Skills: These are the attacks, assists, and general tools of combat for an OC. Skills can only be used in the Combat Phase, played face-down with the desired Technique facing the opponent. These have: a name, Potency, two Techniques, and an ability. Potency is the main stat, it determines damage and breaks Style ties. It also determines how much Will is needed to play in a combo. Technique determines which Skill wins against another in combat. Ability is the same as with the Duelist. There are three Technique classifications: Speed, Power, and Finesse
-Speed overwhelms Finesse but is stuffed by Power
-Power negates Speed but is redirected by Finesse
-Finesse outclasses Power but cannot counter Speed

-Twists: These are assistants, special powers, rare items, events, locations, anything that could turn the tide of battle. The player has 5 out at all times, and can play...

Well that was where i got my current concept for a SDL version of it but i would even happier if the members of SDL could make cohesive Trade Card Game with actual decks that if in the real world would theoretically be played like a real trading card game!

Updates and News

Hello Contributors,Watchers, and those just stopping by this a special update because there has been something there has been two things that has clawing at the back of my mind with combat and abilities of the TCG.

1) Card positions:
because Magic: the Gathering is the father of all trading card games, most games follow a special card positioning factor to them to add strategic value to the game. i feel this TCG lacks that quality, but if this game hits the street with that type of system i don't want to sued millions of dollars for copyright infringement. so i want going with a system similar to the Pokemon system (Normal, paralyzed, confused, etc) with the ever popular magic "tapping", the combination sort of has the four position being prepared, fatigued, stunned, and disoriented. the symbol between prepared and Fatigued hasn't been created yet (copyright infringement once again). It's something that still needs more fleshing out.

2) "God" or Insta-Win Cards
i hate to say it, but it's true, i have been thinking about Yu-gi-oh cards that are instant wins or looming metaphorical death over an opponent's head (you all know the ones i am talking about). Cards like that were one of the things that eventually drove me away from that game, but it is all a part of strategy and like a burning building ,it something i can't ignore. so now that i put the idea out there i must throw the balance warning out there because if you has something as broken as auto-matic win there has to be something that make you have to hold it back on use it the second you would draw it. my suggestions are as followed:

- it requires multiple cards to play
- making it very expensive
- have a limiting it to one card per deck
- give it the fate of random chance(has to use coin or dice)
- make it very rare

if you want to you may discuss any one of these topics please comment

-----Old news--------------
(7/10/08)
added Section 5: FAQs on main page

Here at Samurai of the Grove are reaching our 1000th pageview which is an awesome first step in the project.
so far as of the PSD files that have been downloaded here are our stats

--------------------
Duelist: 7
Elite Duelist: 0
Support Duelist: 4
Skill: 3
Item: 5
locations: 3
events: 7
total downloads: 29
--------------------
this doesn't seem like much but it a major start in my book. i am hoping for 1000 more views and that more people join in the project

i would like to especially thank the project contributers and the watchers for showing their support. you guy are great

+Subscription Added and Temporary CSS up+
Possible New Keyword - Betrayal #- when this duelist comes in to play put # of duelist(s) you control into the discard pile from play. If you don't this duelist goes directly to your discard pile. this keyword meant of the more ruthless duelist of the SDL who will anything to win.

disclaimer: not thing is set in stone it need to discussed with Ronin
I know i ask people to check out the card template and make their own cards. i never planned on forces the idea down people throats, even if it seems like it some time on the Chat. well since it has been pretty slow I'm thinking about making a create a card contest for the fine people of SDL to create. it most likely going to be multiple category contest with prize that may include Rank Ups.

Table of Content

<a href="http://Samura...

Since players are put in the position as mangers of the duelers, Duelers loyalty act like heath. if loyalty <= zero put dueler in discard pile. a duelers power is how much damage it deals in combat. Armor is how much damage must be dealt to a dueler before it starts effecting loyalty. Speed is a determining factor during combat to see who strikes first. Combo directly determines how many skill cards can be attach to a dueler.(See Skill Card for more detail). the Price is the amount of yen payed to hire.
As of right now Rank doesn't matter unless you make Elite. these Elite Duelists are powerful in both stats and abilities, however they're quite expensive to hire.
Making Yen
- At the beginning of a game, players start out with 2000 yen each and is used to play any card. how do you get more yen as it is depleted? yen is made by winning duels, some event cards, Selling (putting into the discard pile, not actually discarding) items or location(putting into the discard pile)
- All Yen costs are in increments of ¥50
-on average idea cost measurements: 100 is Low, 500 is Moderate, and 1000 is High
Your Reputation and you: A brief look at Victory Points
Since Players are acting as a mangers or fighter promoter in SDL, they have earn reputation in the form of Victory points. When the game starts both players start out with 0 victory points or no reputation. As duelists start to win duels, player will earn victory points for each successful win. the more victory points you possess, the more advantages you get when playing cards that are directly effected by reputation. However you can lose reputation if a duelist or event ability gives you "bad reputation" or when a duelist is put in to the discard pile then players lose 1 victory point.
Playing Cards
Now that you can make yen, you’ll want to use it to play cards (Skills, events, duelists, items, and locations).
-You can play skills, duelists, items, and locations only during one of your main phases when there’s nothing else on the stack. events can be played at any time.
- To play a card, take the card you want to play from your hand, show it to your opponent, and put it on the stack. (The stack
is the game zone where cards exist before.) There are a few choices that you need to make right now. If the card is an Event and says “Choose one —,” you choose which of the options you’re using. If the card is an event it has a target, you choose what (or who) that target is. skills also target the permanents they’ll be attached. If the card has 100*X in its cost, you choose what number X stands for. Other choices will be made later, when the card resolves.
- Now check what the card’s cost is. subtract the amount necessary to pay that cost, and pay it. Once you do that, the card has been played.
- The card doesn’t resolve (have its effect) right away it has to wait on the stack. Each player, including you, now gets a chance
to play an events or an activated ability in response.
- When a cad resolves, one of two things happens. If the card is an event, it has its effect (in other words, you follow the instructions on the card), then you put the card into your graveyard. If the card is a duelist, item, location, or skill, you put the card on the table in front of you. The card is now in play. Any of your cards in
play is called a permanent because it sticks around permanently (well, until something happens to it anyways). Many permanents have abilities, which is text on them that affects the game.
- After a card or ability resolves, both players get the chance to play something new. If no one does, the next thing waiting on the stack will resolve (or if the stack is empty, the current part of the turn will end and the game will proceed to the next part).
- If either player plays something new, it goes on top of the stack and the process repeats.
Abilities
Static Abilities
A static ability is text that is always true while that card is in play. You don’t play a static ability. It just does what it says.
Triggered Abilities
A triggered ability is text that happens when a specific event occurs in the
game.
- Each triggered ability starts with the word: when, whenever, or at. You don’t play a triggered ability.
- It automatically triggers whenever the first part of the ability happens.
- The ability goes on the stack just like a spell, and resolves just like a spell.
- If the ability triggers but then the permanent the ability came from leaves play, the ability will still resolve.
- You can’t choose to delay or ignore a triggered ability. If the ability has a
target, however, nothing happens if you can’t choose a legal target.
Activated Abilities
- An activated ability is an ability that you can play whenever you want.
- Each activated ability has a cost, then a colon (":"), then an effect. Playing one works exactly like playing an event card, except there’s no card to put on the stack. The ability goes on the stack just like a card, and resolves just like a card.
- If you play an activated ability but then the permanent the ability came from leaves play, the ability will still resolve.
Keyword Abilities
Some permanents have abilities that are shortened to a single word or
phrase. Most of these have reminder text that gives you a brief description
of the ability’s effect.
Combat
there is no limit to number of that can be put in...

GET A DECK
You’ll need your own SDL deck. You’ll also need a way to keep track of both players’ victory point and yen totals.
GET A FRIEND OR TWO...OR EVEN MORE
To play a game, you’ll need an opponent! Your opponent will play against you using his or her own deck.
START THE GAME
Each player starts at 0 victory points and 2000 yen. You win the game by getting 20+ victory points. You also win if your opponent has to draw a card when none are left in his or her deck, or if a spell or ability says that you win.
Decide which player will go first. If you’ve just played the same opponent, the loser of the last game decides who goes first.
Otherwise, roll a die or flip a coin to see who gets to decide.
Each player shuffles his or her deck, then draws a hand of seven cards to start. If you don’t like your opening hand, you can mulligan. Shuffle your hand back into your deck and draw a new hand of six cards. You can keep doing this, drawing a hand of one fewer card each time, until you decide to keep your cards.
PART OF THE TURN
1. Beginning Phase
a. Untap step
You untap all your tapped permanents. On the first turn of the game, you don’t have any permanents, so you just skip this
step. No one can play cards or abilities during this step.
b. Upkeep step
This part of the turn is mentioned on a number of cards. If something is supposed to happen just once per turn, right at the beginning, an ability will trigger "at the beginning of your upkeep..." Players can play events and activated abilities.
c. Draw step
You draw a card from your deck. (The player who goes first skips this draw on his or her first turn to make up for the advantage of going first.) Players can play events and activated abilities.
2. First Main Phase
You can play any number of skills, events, duelists, items, locations, and activated abilities. Your opponent can play events and activated abilities.
3. Combat Phase
a. Beginning of combat step
Players can play events and activated abilities.
b. Declare offensive duelists step
You decide which, if any, of your Duelists will attack, then they do so. This puts the offensive duelists into the combat zone. Players can play events and activated abilities.
- declare support offensive duelists substep
-You decide which, if any, of your support duelists will assist one of your offensive duelists
c. Declare defending duelist step
Your opponent decides which, if any, of his or her Duelists will fight your offensive duelists, then they do so. This puts their defending duelist into the combat zone
- declare support defending duelists substep
-Your opponent decide which, if any, of their support duelists will assist one of their defending duelists
--you may put a location card into combat zone
Players can play events and activated abilities.
d. Combat damage step
Each duelist assigns its combat damage to the defending player's Duelists that is blocking. Once players decide how the duelists they control will deal their
combat damage, the damage is "locked in" and it goes on the stack. It will be dealt even if some of the duelists leave play.
Players may then play events and activated abilities. Once these have all resolved, all combat damage is actually dealt.
e. Award step
Compare your duelist's loyalty to your opponent's duelist (compare those which dueled each other) then award victory points and yen respectively to each players. then return all duelist back to the commons zone
Players can play instants and activated abilities.
f. End of combat step
Players can play instants and activated abilities.
4. Second Main Phase
Your second main phase is just like your first main phase. You can play activated abilities and every type of card, but your opponent can play only activated abilities and events.
5. End Phase
a. End of turn step.
Abilities that trigger "at end of turn" go on the stack. Players can play events and activated abilities.
b. Cleanup step
If you have more than seven cards in your hand, choose and discard cards until you have only seven. Next, all "until end of turn" effects end. No one can play cards or abilities unless an ability triggers during this step.
Next Turn
Now it’s your opponent’s turn. Once they go through their turn it your turn again. Keep repeating until a player reaches 20 victory points

Rulebook links

Rulebook - Section 1: The Basics
<img src="http:...

Skill cards can't be used if the duelist's combo is 0 or the cost is great than the combo point as duelist has.
-there are two types of Skill cards - Passive and Activating. most skills are Activating which means each skill can be use at once during the turn.
