In this chapter, we learn a lot about Alex. Important things about him. I know he's been a mystery to you all and I know I promised that you didn't know the half of it, but this next chapter will help. With it, I am taking a risk. There comes a time in a person's life where they just need to face facts and come to terms with their conscience. Don't worry, I'm not dying or committing suicide. I've just been keeping this news from all of you for the past few months. I know this is going to upset some of you, but I hope you can understand. I don't know why I'm telling you this on May 18th- a Monday of all days, but I figured "why not?"

Flying With a Broken Wing will be my very last long-term fan fiction of any kind. I will not be writing any fan fiction for any fandoms of any kind any more. I may occasionally post a short story for Pirates, seeing as the fourth installment may jump start my creative piratical brain, but as for that, nothing else will emerge.

Please, before you ask any questions or post what a traitor I am, please hear me out. As many of you know, I plan on pursuing a major in Creative Writing when I attend college. I am hoping to become a professional author when I... well, grow up. The fact of the matter is, writing fan fiction is not going to get me anywhere. I cannot publish fan fiction because it is borrowed work in my own words. I want to publish something before I exit high school and fan fiction is a real time and brain consumer.

I beg of you, do not think that I believe that I have been wasting my time. I have had some of the greatest joys of my life writing for you all. There is nothing more that I look forward to than submitting a chapter and reading all of your comments and feedback. Call me conceited, but I'm always bragging about the love I receive from you all. "Never, ever, ever do that again, Alex!" Addie shouted at him as she threw her pistol down on her desk. She unbuttoned her vest more violently than she normally would. Alex slammed the door to her cabin behind him and argued, yelling, "Perhaps if you stopped being stupid and putting yourself in such dangerous situations, I wouldn't have had to!" Addie glared at him and scoffed, putting her angry fists on her hips. Alex unbuckled his belt and tossed it on a chair, then yanked eased his bloody shirt over his head as carefully as he could, trying not to irritate his injured shoulder. He continued, "If you had just gone through the back way like I had told you-"
"I was not going to go through the back way like some coward!" she interrupted, averting her eyes from his muscular chest, "I'm not afraid of those bastard soldiers!"
"It's not about how brave you are, Addie! It's about how safe you are!"
"It doesn't matter what I did! You jumped in front of the gun!"
He searched the drawers of her dresser and pulled out cloth, wrapping his mildly massacred shoulder with one hand. "Well, that sure as bloody hell is the last time I ever take a bullet for you! You're the most ungrateful woman I've ever met!"
She stomped over to him and helped wind the fabric around his arm and chest. "Don't ever risk your life for me again!"
"It's my job," he stated, lowering his voice and letting her assist him, "I'm your protector."
"Yes, but," she took a deep breath, "but I don't want you to get hurt."
He turned his neck to look into her eyes. "I don't want you to get hurt either. That's why I leaped in front of the bullet."
She looked back at him, speechless.
"Addie, I could never forgive myself if something happened to you and i could have done something to stop it."

Addie stood on the tips of her toes and stretched up to kiss Alex on the lips. She'd never kissed a man before. Ever. No one. So, she just pressed her lips and pulled away a second later. However, Alex wouldn't let her stop there. He put his hand on the back of her neck and pulled her back to him. She dropped the cloth and wrapped her arms around him, running her fingers up and down his bare back. As his lips moved with hers, she smiled and threw herself into the kiss even more... until he let out an "Ow!" She jumped off of him and yelped, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" He groaned a bit, rubbed his shoulder, and chuckled, "It's alright, Addie. Come back here." He motioned for her to return to him. She obeyed, letting him hold her close. He kissed her hair and she kissed the shoulder she'd accidentally harmed.

"I love you," Alex confessed, "and I always will. Even if you don't love me back." Addie looked up at him and put on a smirk. "You don't have to worry about that," she told him, "I love you too."
He grinned. "Just promise me that I won't have to jump in front of a firearm too often."
"Only if you promise not to jump next time."

And there you go! Aren't they adorable? Tell me what you think!

M'dear bucko/sister, =LadyYuna88, has already begun on her's (which I find absolutely incredible), so I figured the rest of ye would want to get started also. However, there are a few... guidlelines that must be followed, as always:

No profanity, sexual themes, etc. on the image. There'll be none of that on me profile, ye hear?
It must be related to Flying With a Broken Wing, of course.
It would be nice if ye could put the title in the preview image. It just makes more sense that it's a preview image that way.
It must not be derogatory to the story, characters, trilogy, etc.
All entries must be submitted by April 3, 2009! (let me know if ye need a bit of an extension, savvy?)

And last, but not least:

Gibbs yelled to Addie, "If you must help, tie down the sails with the tightest knots you can manage!" Addie ran to the nearest mast as fast as she could. Waves came crashing onto the ship like iron blankets. The water was cold and angry. It was as if it was the arms of the sea, pulling in its victims without reason. And what reason did it need?

Addie remembered how to tie ropes. Loop around and under. Loop around and under. Her mother had taught her. Her mother had taught her everything. Addie began tying another rope when her hat finally gave in and let the wind carry it away. She didn't bother to fetch it. The rain attacked her face in icy pellets. She closed her eyes and felt the rope with her hands. The darkness was all the more scarier with the sound of thunder ringing in her ears and the dim flash of lightning seen through her thin eyelids.

Another rope tied. She opened her eyes to find more to be fastened. The waves were getting larger now and their tempers were flaring. Out of the storm, she heard Jack's voice shout, "Adeline, watch out!" but it was too late. The wave had already taken her and pulled her under. Before it could drag her into the sea, she latched onto the rail of the ship. Jack yelled to her, "Hold on!" and she could see him running towards her. Her nails dug into the wood of his ship, but she could hold on no longer. With one final heave, the water clawed her from the rail and into it's mouth.

As I was typing up Chapter XVII last night, my mind started to go. I wondered what you all think Kate looks like. She seems to be a beloved character. I know I love her very much. Can you see where this is going?

Well, yes I do. And here they are.

Little House by The Fray
This song is pretty much Addie's theme, to me. If you listen to the lyrics, you get a lot of her character. For example, She doesn't look/She doesn't see/Opens up for nobody pretty much describes how she's not very open about her feelings (rather than her anger, of course) and how, at first, she didn't want to speak of her past. And then, what really ties it in to be her theme is Something scratching its way out/Something you wanna forget about is obviously describing Jack, who she wants to just forget about, but she can't because she's now on his ship and is forced to dwell with him.

Learning to Fly by Tom Petty
~CaptTreasureTroveTi can appreciate this song, since its from the Elizabethtown soundtrack. Obviously, the title of the song alone ties in with the story and/or the title of the story. But, specifically, some parts tie in, such as I'm learning to fly/But I ain't got wings/Coming down/Is the hardest thing is obviously talking about how Addie getting her independence, but she's never really had the "wings" (aka Jack) to help her. Plus The good old days/May not return meaning the days with her mom and So I started out/For God knows where/I guess I'll know/When I get there is speaking of her journey she's taking.

This is a rather depressing song, but it helps me get in the mood to feel Addie's pain about the loss of her mother. Lyrics like How could this happen to me?/I've made my mistakes/Got nowhere to run/The night goes on as I'm fading away/I'm sick of this life/I just wanna scream/How could this happen to me? really tug on my heart and help me get in that sad mood. She misses her mom a lot and it tortures her every day, so I'm sure she asks herself How could this happen to me? a lot. (By the way, I hope I didn't just depress you guys with those lyrics...)

This song also helps me to get into Addie's mood with her loss of her mother with lyric like Has no one told you?/She's not breathing and how she doesn't want to believe that she's all alone If I smile and don't believe/Soon I know I'll wake from this dream and how she doesn't want sympathy from anybody Don't try to fix me/I'm not broken but, in reality, she knows Suddenly/I know I'm not sleeping. A very popular song, I know, but you're got to admit that it ties in with the plot of the story. In Addie's case, she murdered her mother's killer, which she knows was wrong, but she wants everyone to look past that and see that she's a victim. If you haven't heard the song, the chorus goes: Let mercy come/And wash away/What I've done/I'll face myself/To cross out what I've become/Erase myself/And let go of what I've done.

What Not to Do in Front of a Fangirl...

#1. NEVER, repeat NEVER, bash on her fandom. She won't like that. You might end up on a slave ship heading for the cotton fields of Cuba.

#2. If she's in love with a book or movie character, do NOT tell her that her fictional boyfriend isn't real. Let her believe that he is or else she'll threaten to get said boyfriend to kick your a$$. And you should be afraid of that.

#3. If she's in love with a band, do NOT say that you're "just not into" that band. She may tell you it's okay, but on the inside, she's planning your murder. You just like the band, okay?

#4. If she's in love with a celebrity, do NOT tell her that he is too far from her reach. She just might sneak up on you later and choke you with her shoelaces. Tell her she has as a chance. Trust me.

#5. If she's in love with a movie, movie trilogy, or movie series, do NOT tell her that the movie is "so old" or "so last year". As far as you're concerned, it's new and fresh and exciting. That is, if you want to live to see your next birthday. If not, go ahead and tell her that you're over it.

#6. Say there's a countdown coming for either her book's release, her band's new tour, her crush's birthday, or her movie's premiere- participate in her excitement or at least pretend you're the least bit interested. And NEVER ask "Why?" Do NOT.

#7. Say she just found out that her fictional boyfriend's book was getting bad reviews, her band's number one song was dropped from the top list, her celebrity wasn't doing good work, or her movie(s) was beat in the box office, do NOT tell her to "get over it" or say "So what?" Just don't.

#8. Say she's gushing about her fandom and it's getting really annoying, do NOT tell her to shut up. Do NOT roll your eyes. And again do NOT, repeat do NOT, start bashing on the fandom. Or you will wake up very confused in a wooden box floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

#9. Say she's got more than one fandom going on at once, do NOT tell her that she can't have more than one fandom. Tell her that you think it's great that she has so many interests.

#10. When she gets over her fandom (and, believe me, she will eventually) do NOT throw a party to celebrate. Do NOT thank God (at least not out loud). Do NOT tell her how annoying she was. Do NOT start bashing on the fandom she supposedly just got over. If you know what's good for you, you won't.

Because fangirls are just awesome like that.
