There are two main reasons I have been absent from here for so looong:
1) I wanted to spend some time really working on my skills and honing my technique. I thought it best to take a leave of absence from posting work while I did this.
2) We've moved! We are now back in our home state and all the things associated with moving made art take a major back seat. We've been back going on a year now and I'm pleased to say everything is going very well. I now have a HUGE studio space and I no longer need to break things down when I'm done! The area is upstairs with it's own A/C zone and everything.

Hey all

Well, I've now been on dA for 1 year and I have just over 600 page views. Not a whole lot but I don't really do much in the way of self promotion. A LOT has changed for me this past year. I began using pastels. I've dabbled a bit in acrylics and found I don't like them one bit. The use of pastels has been the single greatest thing in my artistic career. They've forced me to realize that a little is often better than a lot. In this I mean that I used to try to achieve a level of detail that was not in keeping with my personality and pastels helped me unlock how to create enough detail using color depth without overworking an area. In this regard, my whole philosophical approach to painting has changed and I think the results are MUCH improved. While the number of pieces I've produced has dropped from the previous year, the ones I have produced are of sufficiently increased quality that I don't need to feel badly. I still have a lot of work to do and so many aspects to improve upon that it's scary but at least I can look back and see where I came from and realize making something that grabs people and speaks to them is not completely out of my reach someday.

I'm about ready to launch a website for marketing my sports art. It's basically ready, I'm just waiting. Not sure what for... I suppose I'll have it hosted on Tripod for now since I don't want to spend anything for the URL.

What can you look forward to from me in the coming year? Well, probably an increase in the number of landscapes which is really my roots in art. I'll definitely still put out plenty of sports themes. I've also started writing and I may decide to use dA as a sounding board. I imagine I'll still be a rather manic contributor, going months without logging in and then spending a few weeks checking in several times a day...that's just me

Best of luck to everyone in 07!

YAY! I got my first commission since I started painting again on Friday night!! I am to do a small pastel of a lady's grandson playing lacrosse. He was on the all-county team at least two years in a row and was the coutny player of the year in his Sr. year of high school. It's to be a Christmas present for her daughter. She also said she might have me do her other grandson as well. I'm practically giving it away but that's fine. She has lots of friends so I'm certain my work will be seen rather widely and with any luck, this will lead to more!

I promise I'll upload something new....

I do have a legitimate excuse actually. This Saturday, I'll be celebrating the 3 week birthday of my 2nd son! He came a little early but is home and is doing very well.

I also have to prepare a fairly new pastel piece for another show. I have to cut the mats and frame it before the 12th. I don't even have a frame picked out yet. Gotta do that this weekend.

Speaking of pastels, I really should post some pictures of those...

I stood in the chilly air of a brooding Saturday, praying the rain would hold off, as strangers processed by my artwork. Some stopped and looked while others filed past. I suppose nothing struck them as endearing or shocking enough to make them open their pocketbooks and take something home with them. I'm encouraged only by the fact that the person next to me whose work was head and shoulders above anything I expect I'll ever do also sold nothing. I was set up along a fence provided by the arts council. I didn't anyone who was on the fence sell anything. Another artist who had an actual booth along the main thoroughfare of the show said he had sold only one piece.

I got a letter that same day saying I was accepted into a much larger show in Pennsylvania. This one lasts 2 days. I'm in what they call the "emerging artist" area. I will have to buy a booth. That's all I need, to make a large capital investment to go and sell nothing....

Purchased the new Tool CD yesterday. I'm quite pleased with it. It makes me want to do something new, something different...

I guess I should upload pictures of my newer pieces, but somehow I feel it would be a waste of my time.

Ok, so it's been a long time since I've done anything here and lest those few people who do watch get fed up and drop me I thought I should post something completely without meaning or purpose. I have a lot of work that I've not posted. Mostly hockey related, of course. I've taken up pastels and totally love them. It is such an immediate and vigorous medium. However, I feel dirty and unfaithful to my oils. They stare at me..... they make me nervous. They did me no wrong, how could I do such a thing to them?!?!

My exhibition is over, my paintings have been removed from the walls and are now sitting in a backroom in Baltimore. I need to go pick them up. I'm going to enter my Mars painting and my Peter Forsberg painting in a juried regional show. *fingers crossed*

Music pours forth... I've begun composing again...stay tuned, the first song from a new age of my musicality shall soon be available. Your ears will never be the same, "what filth!"

I've finally gotten the first track from what I hope turns into a full album uploaded onto one site on the net. Go give it a listen if you get the chance and be sure the read the song information because that's where I begin to introduce the story this music is meant to convey. The title is "The Muon Conspiracy."

I've been a bit of a frustrated, "I Suck" mood lately. I've been looking at too much art in magazines and on here. The problem is, I admire styles that I seem to have trouble painting. I have a lot more admiration and love for the more stylistic or impressionistic artists than true realists but I seem to have a personality that tunes into detail and, as such, I am completely unable to control that part of me that wants to depict every single aspect that I know is there even if I'm far enough away from my subject that it can't be fully seen. I'm far too cerebral. I took a day off Friday and devoted it to recharging and painting some.

I guess I need to make a few statements about how the olympic hockey has turned out. If you've been following along, you know that both the US and Canada were eliminated in the first medal round. I'm not all that surprised by this. I think Canada was a bit out of sorts due to the Gretzky gambling scandal as well as not having any time for the team to really work out together. The US's only excuse can be lack of team chemistry from no practice time as a team. To me, this really demonstrates that NHL players do not belong in the olympics unless they are willing to forego a large part of the season to play and practice with the olympic team.

As it stands now, I'm hoping to see either Finland or Sweden get the gold and for Russia to be on the medal platform too.

Well, I hardly ever bother to use the computer on the weekends and since yesterday was a holiday for me, I really didn't feel like booting the POS up and logging on and all that jazz. So...I come online today and find that a lot of people were really busy over the weekend and I need to check out a whole LOT of people's art work sometime today.

Hockey update:
Canada beat Sweden in the women's gold medal game yesterday and the US beat Finland in the bronze medal game.

The US men got a berth to the medal round when Kazakhstan beat Latvia today. I guess they are playing Russia right about now or in an hour or two for a game that the Russians may want to throw so they can play Switzerland in the first round. The US gets the top seeded Finnish team tomorrow regardless of whether they win or lose today. Looks like quick exit for the the "All-Star" NHL laden US team. Just goes to show, the NHLers should NOT be playing in the Olympics.

Painting update:
I have 2 pieces in works right now, the major one is Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. It's about 80% complete and coming together nicely. The other is a church that is also about 80% complete. I'm not very happy with that one right now. I could finish it up rather quickly since its only on a 14X18 inch canvas but I'm really not too excited about it right now. I also have detailed sketch going of a fantasy painting as well as another hockey scene.

Stay tuned...

As I stated in my last journal entry, I feel this is the best work I've ever done in terms of detail, color, technical workmanship, and composition. I was able to throw my tendency to rely on my brain to tell me what color things were and let my emotions work.

Men's olympic hockey starts tomorrow I believe. The women started yesterday with huge wins by the Canadians. Here's how I would like to see things end up on the Men's side of things:

1. USA
2. Suomi
3. Canada

I do know better though, Canada is clearly better than any other team in the field.
