I have an upper honors degree in biology, with distinctions for my final year project and modules in cryptogamic botany, integrated pest management, and things along those lines. I also have distinctions for my minor subjects - javascript-based scientific simulations, dynamic website design and administration and so on. I also have an industrial-level medal for producing the best academic thesis and project in my honors cohort. Topped the 2003 honors cohort, in other words.

What do I do now?

I have been supervising grasscutting, making sure grass is not more than 2 cm tall, measuring how thick tree trunks are with a regular measuring tape, and routinely listening to complaints about people's rubbish bins overflowing, for more than 3 years. When tasked with developing their staff's potential, my bosses sent me for a course on operating a cherry-picker crane. I was also asked to go for a course on playset assessment, involving pushing and pulling slides, swings and see-saws to ensure they don't fall apart, but I refused vehemently, seeing as to how it would entrench me further in this field given the unbelievable additional bond period for something that isn't exactly analogous to a course in rocket science.

I go to work in long-sleeved office clothes daily as my mother would kill me if she found out I'm supervising grasscutting after wasting 4 years getting an honors degree.

It got very old from week 2, but I have been doing this for 3 years and 3 months already, with no other job offers on the horizon at all even after sending out close to 200 job applications in the past 3 years. To add insult to all this, only last month did my boss tell me that among the 14 existing 'managers', only 2 of us - me and another, were degree graduates. That immediately explained everything - the general lack of motivation, interest, initiative, EQ and all. In addition, apart from these 14, another 2 new 'managers' who had just joined were fresh graduates. I always thought 'manager' was a position someone reaches after some years of experience. Clearly this is not so here, and all along I had been working like some real manager, unaware that I was being given all the so-called 'manager'-level work (which really isn't high-level; just that the others don't know how to use computers) that the other 'managers' could not do - either due to incompetence or lack of interest. And I shan't even elaborate on the fact that 16 of the branch of 22 are 'managers'. Seems like everyone is a 'manager' these days. Clearly, I was cheated from day 1 when I applied for this 'manager' position.

Today, I was listening for almost 2 hours, to a resident, a retiree probably older than 65 who didn't need to work and could stay at home in his expensive land-based house all day watching TV, complain about how 'his rubbish bins have not been emptied for 6 months already', how he can see students routinely having sex at the benches near his house every week, and how he is unhappy seeing workers smoking when they are sweeping up leaves, I and noticed the way I was addressed was similar to how ruffians treat mangy dogs. Lots of cursing, belittling, insinuation and basically, loud volume. As usual I managed to keep myself in check, but if I wasn't part of the organization I would've let him have an earful right on the spot. I really wanted to twist his head off like one of those 1.2 liter screwtop bottles.

So much for that upper-tier biology degree. Measuring trees with a measuring tape and supervising grasscutting is definitely not biology.

Is this kind of thing common in other countries too, given the ubiquity of honors degrees, or is it just a Singapore thing?

Never show up, never respond to phone calls, as if they've been kidnapped by aliens the night before.

Another weekend wasted when I could have done something more productive. Two incidences on both days too. If they're not interested, why can't they just say so instead of coming up with all kinds of excuses and I'll reschedule someone else instead of wasting my time? To think all these people approached me to do a shoot first, not the other way round.

Luckily I learnt from the previous times when I bought roses two times for a shoot and they flaked out on both instances.
Stumbled across this journal article, and I feel the same way the writer does about the community in general.

[link]

Only in Singapore do people get so uptight over a hobby, complaining to newspapers, gearing up for a witch hunt, and things like that, over a newspaper article aimed at nobody in particular.

My favorite line: "the vehemence and rabidness of your tone in the e-mails sent in just show you for what you are - an empty (psychotic) vessel making too much noise."

So very true. Some years back, in a similar vein, some cosplayers even took it upon themselves to represent 'the entire singapore cosplay community' to demand an apology from a shopping center here after they held a cosplay event, for 'exploiting cosplayers', when what they did was just organize a cosplay competition. They even showed up in person to demand this.

Sheesh.

There is a certain photographer in the local community who is always looking for trouble. Someone who's always spouting law. No prizes for guessing who.

At every cosplay event I go to, he'll be there, and once he spots me, he'll make a beeline for me and deliberately stand behind me to irritate me. I'm very sure he does it so that he's in a position to photograph me secretly, for purposes that are probably less than honorable. I do not understand why people are always looking for trouble. Is this a product of the education system in Singapore, that instills such overcompetitiveness in its people?

Yesterday was no different. I was standing at the stage watching. He saw me from far and came over, and stood behind me.

I immediately turned and moved, and ended up behind him.

He immediately turned and did the same, and was behind me again.

And I did it again.

And he knew he'd been discovered.

So he went off somewhere else.

But his camera was always pointed towards me, even when his back was facing me.

A remote trigger?

I don't know what he's up to but I know he's been collecting photos of me for a while (read, many years).

I hope it's not one of those cases where they hope to climb up the ladder (pardon the irony) by discrediting other photographers.

Sadeness Pt 2 was also great but the rest of the stuff in that album wasn't to my liking.

Some have observed that Enigma's popularity seems to fall by half with every successive album release. They did have some albums that weren't up to par, like Voyageur and A. Posteori, but I really like how they've rebounded since then.

I'm really hunting all over for their first DVD now.
I just read this post in a local forum.

"There is this trend for organisers to do bikini, lingerie and nude shoots. Take a look at the section "Services Wanted" and see how many people are asking for lingerie and nude shoots. This seems to be taken for a place to get models for shoots involving very little or no clothes. What is happening?"

And I agree with the poster. Over the years the photo gatherings have degenerated, with the models becoming younger and more inexperienced by the day. The surface area of their clothes also decrease likewise.

It wasn't always like this. Seems like these days anyone can take a nude photo and call it art. Where are our standards headed?

Please, give us more style and less sleaze.

Seems like the world is spiraling into rotten condition. To put it simply, here's what seems to have happened.

Peasants borrow money from banks.

Banks lend peasants money.

More and more peasants borrow money to buy a lot of things since the economy is good.

Banks found out they may not have enough money to tide over future problems, but still lend money.

Banks, one day, found out that they really do not have money for their own use. So they ask peasants to return. But peasants cannot return since they don't have money to return.

So banks close.

I love being a peasant.

I've been spending time picking up drawing again. I realized that so many of my awful drawings last time could be made presentable by applying rules of perspective. This will take some time to master.
