How time indeed flies.

Feel very ready for the new adventure and I approach it with a sense of excitement and satisfaction.
Things are moving onwards and upwards.

I'm currently awaiting a response from my university of choice, I sincerely hope I get in!

Fingers crossed!

On a personal level, it is now the turn of the X-Men for my current obsession. Every given opportunity has been spent trawling the pages of the Marvel Universe website (most comprehensive guide to all things comic) and this weekend I'm hoping to pick up a copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Uncaged Edition for the PS3. 99 times out of a hundred, movie tie-in's are dire affairs (take Spiderman 3 as your benchmark!), though every now and again, a movie tie-in will stun the gaming community by actually being good...Spiderman 2 being the ideal candidate.
IGN have given it a highly respectable 7.8 review so I think I may have to invest a few hard earned pennies on Sunday

In other news, I'm currently knee deep once more in the wonderful world of Ivalice and Final Fantasy XII, I've had the game for around 3 years and still haven't finished it due to one thing and another. I think it was high time I put it to bed!

Annoyingly this week, the wonderful BBC have decided to stop showing season 4 of Heroes for a fortnight while they air the snooker world championship. Normally I wouldn't mind this as I always enjoy watching the action at The Crucible, but to stop a series 4-5 episodes from the end is just ludicrous! I'd better be compensated with a gripping finale to the snooker otherwise I will be putting my thoughts in writing to Terry Wogan at Point of View!

Let's now look forward to the end of an incredibly tense and close end to the Premier League season, the conclusion of my beloved Heroes, snickity snick snick Wolverine style and NUCA and the Canaries!

KaoChao

Last Friday saw the release of the long awaited Resident Evil 5...

As a lifelong fan of the series I was expecting good things from the serial undead machine. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed too.

Resident Evil 5 follows much in the footsteps of the last iteration, pitting old boy Chris Redfield and newcomer Sheva Alomar into the depths of Africa to combat a new strain of the Las Plagas virus.

The graphics are achingly beautiful, the gameplay is fast and ferocious and the newly adopted co-op play is a welcome addition and brilliantly executed.

Downsides would be the distinct lack of any puzzle element and focus on linearity over exploration.

That said, Resident Evil 5 is a fantastic game and a worthy instalment into the fabled series.

Capcom though, must change things with Resident Evil 6 as I don't think this particular formula will work as well a third time. Bring back the scares, bring back the zombies and bring back the puzzles and the series will be back to its eponymous best.

Ciao

xxxxxxxxx

Street Fighter IV.

Once every few years, a game will come along and immediately force a reshuffle of any 'Greatest Games of All Time' listings.

This is such an occasion.

The original Street Fighter II already holds a top 5 birth in my own personal list and it's 18-year old younger brother has now joined it in that elite bracket.

Street Fighter IV is a shining example of how a company can resurrect a legendary franchise. Not only by breathing new life into it, but redefining it.

Immediately accessible to newcomers and unerringly familiar to those who have experienced Street Fighter in the past. It has a subtle depth a lot of modern fighters can only dream of and a sense of art direction and style that most will never be able to achieve.

A stellar cast of 25 characters:

The 12 original World Warriors - Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun Li, Dhalsim, E. Honda, Blanka, Zangief, Sagat, Vega, Balrog and M. Bison.

Super Street Fighter II stars - Akuma, Fei Long and Cammy.

Alpha series fighters - Sakura, Rose and Dan.

Original Street Fighter - Gen.

Five new characters - Rufus, Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte and Seth.

And a special (renamed) appearance from Sheng Long himself - Gouken.

Every element to this game is astonishing and leaves you craving for more.

Capcom have truly earned their corn on this occasion.

I'll see you in another 20 years for Street Fighter 5!

Kaoruken!

xxx

A new month, a new gaming obsession!

10-years after its eponymous third iteration and a full 18-years after it's meteoric rise to legend status, Friday sees the release of Street Fighter IV.

I can't quite get over just how excited I am about this game. As a kid I must have lost months, possibly even years of my life to the World Warrior.

In a nutshell, Street Fighter is special.

It is one of those titles that along with Mario, Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto, the whole world has heard of and it helped truly define gaming as we know it today. It is among an elite group of genre-defining games and is the grand-daddy upon which all subsequent brawlers are based. Granted it's been recycled and copied more times than anybody cares to remember (141 games in total I'm reliably informed) but this IS Street Fighter. The name alone speaks volumes.

I'm filled with a glorious blend of excitement, nostalgia, love, affection and adoration for what I am to experience.

Join myself, Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Blanka. Guile, E. Honda, Dhalsim, Zangief, Vega, Balrog, Sagat and M. Bison on Friday.

Roll back the years and experience all over again why you fell in love with games.

HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!

Kao-ryuken

xxxxx

In a little under a week, I finally get my hands on the new SlipKnoT album "All Hope Is Gone", and thusly, I am currently in an almost catatonic state of excitement! It has been four long and arduous years since any new material has been released and to have it this close is bordering on torture!

I have been fortunate enough to sample 30 seconds of each song and so far, it has only served to magnify my excitement level exponentially! They appear back to true form and are bringing to the table the most mature and arguably the purest SlipKnoT sound to date.

I haven't submitted anything on DA for quite a while and as a result I am planning a full review of the album and its 12 songs.

Other news of note is that I'm now on my third play through Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in a row and attempting to beat the 'Big Boss Extreme' difficulty. I can't portray accurately what an impact this game has had on me, suffice to say that it has joined Final Fantasy VIII as my favourite game of all time and may yet surpass it.

SlipKnoT excitement and Metal Gear...what a great combination!

Can I also express my most heartfelt pride and happiness at the astounding success my closest friend PiratePhotography has made in recent months. She is fast becoming a star in her own right and if you haven't sampled her work so far, I implore you to do so immediately!

That's all for now I think...

Stay (sic)

Kaoru
xxxx

Masterpiece.

That is the only definitive way to describe Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The game that Hideo Kojima and his team has assembled is one of stunning beauty, riveting story-telling, deep emotion and overall mastery.

This game isn't just good...it's about as close to perfect as I've ever found a game...and I've been playing games for a long, long time. Everything about the title screams perfection and a drive to achieve just that. I'm not going to go into the specifics of the story, but it moved me very deeply and will stay with me for the longest time.

I give a heartfelt congratulations and round of applause to Hideo Kojima and his team at Konami.

I give a standing ovation to the immensely stunning, innovative and emotive B&B Corps: Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf & Screaming Mantis.

I give a nod to the impressive Playstation 3 system for being able to manage this epic with no problems.

And I give a long and emotional salute to Solid Snake. You have given me many, many happy memories...it's time for you to rest.

...I'm going now to have a cigarette in honour of Snake, Hideo, Konami and Metal Gear Solid.

Kaoru Akiba xx

ALL HOPE IS GONE 8.26.08

Slipknot, the Grammy Award winning hard rock machine from of Des Moines, IA is back. The band will release its fourth album, All Hope is Gone, on Roadrunner Records on August 26, 2008. The album was recorded this spring in Slipknot's home state and is co-produced by the band and Dave Fortman.

"The nine" will spend their summer laying waste to arenas in North America as they headline the first annual Rock Star Energy Mayhem Festival. As Slipknot's first tour in three years, these dates are sure to bring the band's legion of diehard fans, affectionately dubbed "maggots," out in full force.

All Hope is Gone is more of a statement than a record. Corey Taylor comments, "Every album we have made is a statement about that space in time. I think this era is the most mature, most beautiful and the most powerful. We have made an album that will show the road behind, the road ahead, and where we are as men. I think it's the best thing I've ever made. And I challenge anyone to prove me wrong."

The album promises to blend elements of 2004's Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and 2001's Iowa, while adding a perspective, freshness and depth that only three years apart can bring. The first single "Psychosocial" will be delivered to radio on June 30 and will be available digitally on July 1. A complete track listing will be announced shortly.

Slipknot is the ever-evolving definitive voice in hard rock music. They are pioneers of an alternative metal scene, where scarring riffs and thunderous percussion are punctuated by vocals, which seamlessly shift from brutal to melodic within a breath. The band's previous studio albums, Slipknot, Iowa, Vol.3The Subliminal Verses) have all been certified platinum or better, as have their DVDs, Welcome to Our Neighborhood, Disasterpiece and Voliminal: Inside the Nine. The double live 9.0: Live holds a gold certification.

(Extrct taken from SlipKnoT's official Myspace blog)

FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to bother with new years resolutions as I never remember what I promised myself. Instead, I'm going to have a year of "looking forward".

Rather than the usual "I'm going to do this!" and "I'm going to do that!" routine, I've decided merely to look forward to upcoming events.

So...this year (so far) I am looking forward to:

~ Getting my freedom and flat back
~ Spending some proper time with little one
~ Starting my new job
~ SlipKnoT's new album and tour
~ Dir en grey's new album and tour
~ Hopefully getting to see Dimmu Borgir
~ Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
~ Final Fantasy Dissidia
~ Silent Hill V
~ Plenty of great nights in the Lloyds Arms

That should do me for now.

Hope the year is as promising for you as it is for me.

31st December 2007 is National Smoking Day in the UK.

Thousands of pubs and clubs up and down the country are boycotting the ludicrous law enforced on 1st July 2007 by allowing smokers to have a fag or ten inside their establishments and smoke with the freedom that was cruelly taken away from us by the British Government.

It's not an attempt to aggravate non-smokers, it's merely people taking a stand for what they believe is right and trying to regain some of the freedom that was so unnecessarily taken away.

The smoking ban has had such a detrimental effect on numerous aspects of British life. Smokers have become more and more disillusioned with their government and have finally decided to take a stand.

Register your support at [link] and bring some much needed freedom back into these British Isles.

I'll see you by the ashtray's!

Definitely one of the best gigs I've been to this year. HIM were in outstanding form! Ville was on song as only he angelically can be, it was truly beautiful to see him sing. Gas was drumming in a cage for some bizarre reason. Linde can shred with the best of them and was the man of the moment during some solos. Mige still looks like a scruffy sod compared to the rest of them but the man can play a growling bass tremendously well. Poor Burton on keys was getting some stick from Ville but he held his own and almost looked as sharp as the main man.
Overall it was absolutely magnificent and such a memorable night full of sweet pandemonium.
This game is amazing! No other way to describe it, the graphics push the PSP to its very limits, the story is engrossing and provides a fantastic insight into the origins of the town and The Order.

Travis Grady is a likeable character (not all too disimilar to Jack Burton from Big Trouble In Little China), combat is solid and ideal for the system, the nurses look incredible as ever and the transition between the 'light' and 'dark' variations of Silent Hill is very well worked.
The Death Note

I spent yesterday evening watching not one, but both of the live-action Death Note films back-to-back. I've been a follower of the series for a while but this was the first time I had ever seen the films.
I was expecting something good, but not some this good. These are in all honesty, two of the greatest films I have ever seen!
The concept is a stroke of genius from day one anyway, but the cinematography, art direction and script combine to make an amazing spectacle.
Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami, gives easily his best performance since Battle Royale, which will no doubt have Hollywood calling. The surprise for me though was my first encounter with Ken'ichi Matsuyama as Ryuzaki/L...he's the same age as me, though whenever he was on the screen, I could not take my eyes off him. Granted, the character of 'L' is a quirk all of its own, but his mannerisms, physical movement and slow, yet very deliberate movements had me absolutely captivated.

If you've never heard of Death Note, seek it out.
I owe my existence to you personally and to your collective entities. I thanked you once but you will never understand those random two words I uttered to you. VIII x

II - In one facet or another, you have always been in my life. You have come and gone like the wind, yet always returned to source. One day the pond will not be so great. x

III - You are no longer with me or us but your presence will always be felt. You opened my eyes to the world I covet so dearly and were the first to unearth my true self. I am forever thankful for every second I spent with you. Forever the heartless, Miss. x

IV - I always thought you were the one, until my mnd was changed. I chased and harried after your love and graces for three entire years of my life. You will always mean the world to me and it is my sincere hope that you one day find the happiness that you long for. You know me better than most and will always have a place among the single white lillies. x
V - The one person any son holds dearest of all. Times and circumstance have changed but you are still the one person who knows me best of all. I hope your Mr Christian brings you all the love and engegement you have been craving for so many years. x

VI - Not much to say as we've never been the truly talkative types...You'll never walk alone Pops...never. x

VII - The one soul on this Earth who knows every single facet of my being. I have been there since minute one and although the years are in differentiation, you know who I truly am. We will continue to be there for one another, come hell or high water, always. I love you dearly and treasure the closeness we have. Time to play the game... x

VIII - My second brother. The two of us have been to Hollywood and back. For eight long years now and numerous disappearances, you are still there. As close to a brother as my own and I love you all the same. Whenever I need a rational or traditional stand point, of just someone to share a beer or a game with, I know you are there. Domo arigato K-san x

IX - You are the greatest enigma of them all... x

X - One Sunday, the Autumn past, you changed my life. All those days waiting and wanting were gone. Much to my astonishment and bewilderment. All that which I had coveted all these years...gone in a single shared kiss. From that point on, I knew there was to be only one. I discarded much of the baggage I held, in order to provide you with myself entirely. A few jolts down the line and we are approaching our most pivotal and intimate cycle. One which I know wholeheartedly will bring us closer than anything or anyone before. I live my life for you, and for you alone. My sole mission in life is to see and help you reach the pinnacle of where you deserve to be. I come a very distant second to your needs and your desires. Though given collared circumstances, that statement does seem rather ironic and paradoxical. Regardless...I meow only for you and for your love. I anticiapate a wonderful and truly beautiful future ahead of us. I love you with all my heart and soul. xxxx xxxx

Myself and Mr Cookie travelled to Sheffield to see the awesome Stone Sour in action. We got there eventually, checked into the scabbiest of hotels then made our way to the Corporation.

On lining up outside the venue, we happened to be stood next to the back stage fire doors. Said fire doors kept opening and various roadies/fans and the like were coming in and out. Everytime the doors opened we'd naturally have a little peek inside to see of we could spot anyone. After the seventh or eighth time of opening, we caught sight of a small(ish) blonde guy who bore an unmistakable resemblance to Corey Taylor [referenced under "God"/"Genius" in the dictionary]...that alone would have been enough! Moments later, the doors swung open again and he was stood there...his instantly recognisable voice bellowed out "What the fuck is going on out here!" That was it, I was mesmerised! I offered out my hand and he shook it...that there was all I've ever wanted, just to shake the man's hand, in appreciation for what he has given me over the past nearly 8 years (irony much!). It was a milestone moment for me, and those who know me well, will know all too much how high a pedestal I hold this man on. It really was one of those moments that will forever be engrained in the memory. Thank you Mr Taylor! For everything.

That already had made my night, and for a moment, I had completely forgotten that we were there to actually see Stone Sour play!

While we waited, a hooded man sneaked through the doors, only to pull down his hood at the last minute and reveal himself as Mr Josh Rand. More minutes passed, the doors opened once more and the diminutive and highly charismatic figure of Roy Mayorga was there in the doorway! This guy is funk! There are no other words that describe him...his is just pure funk! He spent some time socialising with the fans, taking pictures etc etc then disappeared round the corner. If that wasn't enough, the doors came open one final time to reveal the very tall and oh so cool James Root! This guy looked so swish, hair back, glasses, scarf and a suit jacket...he really did look so cool! He didn't stop for anyone but I managed to pat him on the back! Two members of SlipKnoT in one day! Amazing! This day was one of the greatest days I have ever had!

We got into the venue....the Corporation is a small place, but the intimacy the fans have with the band really is second to none...I loved that little place.

Bullets & Octane were the support act. They were ok, nothing too special, but not too bad either, just ok. The singers' mannerisms and body movements reminded me so much of Ville Valo! They played their set and left.

Stone Sour came out to "The Final Countdown" of all things :S Don't think I'll ever understand the rationale behind that one! Corey was on top form as ever, James, Josh, Shawn and Roy providing powerful support as ever! Corey actually introduced the band, the first time I've ever seen him do it. The set list was a little on the short side, with some strange omissions, but regardless, they were absolutely on fire!

In no particular order they played: 30/30 150...Orchids...Your God...Blotter...Tumult...Reborn...Come What(ever) May...Get Inside...Take A Number...Bother (preceeded by "Wicked Game!" ACE!)...Through Glass...Hell & Consequences...and Inhale.

They absolutely excelled themselves...there were some priceless moments of crowd interraction from Corey:

"You can take all the money, all the fame and all the shit...THIS is the reason I do this...this right here!"

Corey Taylor, James Root, Josh Rand, Roy Mayorga, Shawn Eckonomaki...thank you for a truly amazing and memorable evening.
