Wow, a Journal update, it's been a while.

How are things?

I'm totally swamped at the moment, which is not a bad thing. I've almost finished the character concept art for the graphic novel Between the Darkness and the Light, so I thought I'd take a a few weeks off when I finish the last one before I spend about six months drawing and painting nothing but goblins, elves and dragons.

Well... ...I say nothing but drawing and painting, I need to put the finishing touches to the scripts first, then it's nothing but drawing and painting goblins, elves and dragons!

Until then though I thought I'd work on a few pieces of art that have nothing to do with the above until the new year which have been waiting for a bit of free time to get tackled, I have a billion and one things I'd need to do, but so little time to do them in, so where to start?

So this has prompted a decision I have come to, I'm not taking on anymore unpaid commissions for the next few months, I've already got one or two I'm going to do, other than that, no more for now, sorry, but I really need to get this graphic novel in the baggy. I do love the fact that people like my work enough to ask to see their ideas formed in it, but time is my enemy at the moment, and I have bills to pay

It's not all doom and gloom though, on a lighter note:

I've just got my first 10,000 page views!

Which is really cool, it ties in with the poll I'm running on super powers, keep watching this space, which I hope will also make up a little for dropping unpaid commissions for the short future

So a VERY BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has spent sometime here on this page, I appreciate every view, , and comment that I get <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/bow.gif" width="21" height="16" alt="" title="Thank you! Some of which I follow myself here on DA and aspire to.

So a big thank you to Zaius the owner and writer of the fantastic blog, which is one I have been following for awhile now, so it was a big and welcome surprise this morning to be casually browsing to the blog for a catch up on all things comic and film and find my work featured there.

<img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/bow.gif" width="21" height="16" alt="" title="Thank you!
Official announcements, what are they then? It is almost like I'm important or something, secretly knowing that I'm not, well.... not yet anyway

First announcement: My Blog is now live - you can read and follow it here if you like - My Blog It is the best place to follow me and keep up with my art and writing as unlike my DA Journal I up-date it regularly, and unlike my Twitter and Facebook it's not a quick, random today i feel like....?

Second announcement: I've decided which book I'm working on next, if you can remember it was a tussle between a horror, Sci-Fi or Fantasy, well I've gone for the Fantasy option and have been working on it for a few weeks now. Some art to follow very soon in my DA gallery. The story is called, 'Between the Darkness and the Light' and for regular updates and news, just wack my blog into your Google Reader. (If your not using Google reader, why not?)

Third announcement: To preempt any questions about Google Reader, follow this link for more info - A Tour of Google Reader

Forth announcement: I've left the sad announcement for last, just to leave you on a bum note, I've decided due to a serious lack of anything from Overground comics to chuck in the towel on the project. It was born of a fantastic idea, and Yoda only knows what happened to it, it just seemed to fizzle and pop. So there you have it. That said, i'm still going to keep up with all the great guys involved with the project, i just wont be working on it anymore.

Fifth announcement: I don't think I have one? I just can't end on a sad note.... ...Oh, got one. I've changed my DA ID to the following -

I'm just hoping i don't get stung by the jobs-worth police of 'Art Theft' or something do the rounds on DA at the moment

Thanks for following and all the comments and s and s from everyone, I do get back to you all when I can. While I'm on the subject of thanks, thank you to everyone who has read my short book - Doctor Who and the Edge of Forever, it has now been read over a 1000 times and still has a five star rating.

You can read it here:

Many thanks to all who made it work

 Timey-Wimey, Wibbley-Wobbly… …Stuff?!

Short update this week, mainly as I’m plugging my now published Doctor Who illustrated short:

Doctor Who and the Edge of Forever

Which can be found and read here: [link]

This was a bit of a mad science experiment type thingy, and I think it has paid off as well as paved the way for more like it. I love the story and despite one or two not so great bits in the art, overall I’m very happy with the way they came out.

Paved the way you say, tell me more?

I’m glad you asked, yes I’m now torn between three one shots I’ve been planning now the crazy experiment has worked. A horror, a Fantasy and a Sci-Fi, I can’t quite make up my mind, plus I have a great idea for a full length Doctor Who story in the same format. Oh dear Over the next few days I’ll come to a decision of where to start as I’m going to hopefully publish all of them plus a ger-zillion other ideas too. In the mean time I’m going to focus on finishing my second piece for an attempt to try and land a 2000AD cover called, Death in the City a rendering of old stony face himself, Judge Dredd.

Facebook it is Then

The poll now over, and a bit of a surprise, and not that Facebook came tops, but that no one voted for MySpace? I remember the days when there wasn’t anything but MySpace, well sort of anyway. Twitter didn’t fare so well, let’s be honest, it is a bit pants, but it works for my needs. I think in reflection whatever works for you, and I guess that’s the point? It’s all great having these great tools for networking or whatever you use them for, my advice is to apply some sense. If you look at your Twitter for example and everyday at 9am your posting, ’Had a cup of coffee.’ and at 12noon your posting, ’Had a cheese roll. To finish your day with, ’Can’t wait to get home and watch Eastenders tonight.’ You have to question your motives, don’t you? Or maybe that is what it is all about and I missed the boat? Perhaps this world of networking is just about saying, ’Hay, here I am.’ And there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Enough rambles, thank you for looking and supporting, read my short story and let me know what you think

(You can find a copy in my gallery in the Doctor Who and the Edge of Forever folder - [link]). Any-who I needed something to experiment with for a formatting style for a future project, well I say future, I’m already working on it. This story fitted the bill and also gave me a chance to re-envision some of the story and show it in it’s entirety. So if you like Doctor Who and like to read, watch this space as it’s going to be published as an ebook by the end of next week, links etc to follow in my next journal.

Avatar - Not the Bald One!

Just one more thing before I go, I’ve been raving about this to everyone I know, so this includes you guys on DA too, check out this trailer: [link] it looks flippin’ fantastic

Enough flannel for now, thanks for looking, reading and supporting my work

Where would you go and who would you take if you had a Tardis?

The results of my recent poll:

What’s a Tardis?

TARDIS is an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension In Space and is the Doctor’s spaceship and is capable of travelling anywhere in time and space, harnessing the power of the time vortex to voyage across the universe. So where do everyone what to go and with who?

Where to go?

Everyone picked some great places, from just bumming around time and space, to London through one of my choices Poosh up to the Medusa Cascade. I got to admit I liked all of them and would have to do the lot.

Who to Take?

Interesting this one, most went for close friends or partners.

What would I do?

I’ve thought about this, and I would do everything and see everyone, I would take a posy of friends and family with me. However first, I would like to just take my son when he is a little bit older, right back to the creation of the Universe, a bit like the Doctor did with Donna at the creation of the Earth. I’d fling the door open point at the newly born universe and say, ‘You see this entire amazing and fantastic universe?’ And when he looks up at me with his big sparkly brown eyes, awe struck into dumbfoundness and nods, I’ll give him a big hug and tell him, ‘Well it’s all yours to explore son.’ And take him on one trip, before all the mad adventures start, to where ever or whenever he wants. I think that would be brilliant.

Re- Decorating? Well, having made the time to make them, I’ve now just got to make the time to upload them. I hope everyone enjoys them, I’ve already got the first few uploaded.
Torchwood – Children of the Earth

I’ve managed in between running around like a Muppet on fire trying to keep up with the Everest sized mountain of work and ever looming deadlines to not only watch the Torchwood five part season three, but also write this. See, time manipulation is possible

I ran a poll mid way through the week, and those of you who knew what it was seemed to be loving it more than hating it, which is more than pleasing being a big phat fan of the show. For those of you in the states who haven’t got the chance to watch the show yet, my advice is not to miss out. Keeping this blog spoiler free, simply it was well written, filmed and just about everything else you could ask for. My one gripe is there are one or two cheesy moments, but that’s Russell T for you. After my ‘no spoiler’ pledge I can’t really say anymore on this, so I won’t

2000AD

I just thought I would say 2000AD has, is and being the presumptive git I am, will be my favourite comic of and for all time. The English comic 2000AD has been around almost as long as I have, and I’ve been reading it since the first issue. It consistently kicks the bottom of other comics without breaking a sweat, and I have never seen or heard of any other comic being consistently just flippin’ brilliant, not one. It needs no gimmicks like other big comic publishers to retain readership, most if not all big names in the comic industry from this part of the globe have or still work on this amazing title. Not only does it publish weekly, but monthly too, and at no cost to the art or stories, again unlike other comics. Why do I bring this up? I’m tiring of the hero in tights dying one issue and back to life the next, or being ‘rebooted’ to stimulate fading readership, or having to buy fifty comics a month just to keep up with one characters story arc! None of this happens in 2000AD, just solid consistent and amazing stories and art. The other reason? This weekend for just a few quid I got not only the weekly issue, 2000AD, not only the monthly issue, The Megazine but also they were packaged with a Comic-Con ’09 Special brimming with stories and also a graphic novel of some older 2000AD stories. And if that wasn’t enough, there was a giant pin-badge relating to a current story run with the comic’s main anti-hero Judge Dreadd.

Take this risk, follow the link:
[link]

Re- Decorating?
New Star Wars or Old Star Wars?

I saw an interview with Megan Fox last night about the Transformers 2 Movie, she said it was all about pleasing the fans (I cannot comment on this point as I'm yet to see this movie), she then added, 'like George Lucas can confirm, this is a very hard thing to do.'

And it got me thinking about the Star Wars films. Are the new ones really that bad, are we as fans being too critical of these new chapters of the saga? Or is it that the fans of the new films just don't 'get it'?

Being an old fart and have been about since the first film was at 'the pictures' and growing up with the original Star Wars films, I must have watched them all countless times as a kid. I remember during the summer holidays me and my friends managed to wear the tape out in places on The Empire Strikes Back.

We had the toys, the t-shirts, the duvet and pillow sets the lunch boxes and socks! My generation lived and breathed nothing but Star Wars. Then it ended, for years! Nothing but the odd comic and magazine. Maybe a re-run of one of the films one weekend on TV. Then a lifeline, George was making Episode I.

It was exciting times.

Now there was years of expectancy, hyping and teasing until the film was released.

Talk about the expectance ruining the party! Queue the massive backlash from my generation, the Star Wars generation. When you look at it this way, you have to forgive us, the last thing we had was the Ewoks and the best lightsaber fight in the series, now we are teased with the promise of a look at the young Darth Vader. What do we get? Ja-Jar Binks and some kid with bugs in his blood talking to him like a mad man hears voices. WTF?

So we clung to Episode II, which promised to not only better, not only give more history on the rise of Darth Vader, not only give us some background on the coolest bounty hunter in the series Boba Fett but to also spill the beans on the Clone Wars!

What did we get?

A two hour toy advert!

Then Episode III flopped onto the cinema screens like a floundering fish, it turns out that yes it is an official medical condition, you can die from a broken heart? Nooooooooooooooooo!
Don't get me started on the cheesy Darth Vader screaming like some ham in that scene.

Now my generation are left drifting in the wake of this while we get a splash in the face by yet more Star Wars in the form of The Clone Wars, animated; haven't we seen this already? Yet, I find myself watching and enjoying this TV show, and on reflection, maybe the new films aren't that bad really?

Maybe?
I'm not to sure, I know I can't pick up a copy of The Phantom Menace and actually cringing at the thought of that numb-nut Jar-Jar Binks goofing across my TV, put it in my DVD player and watch it. I know every time I see another Star Wars fan made lightsaber fight video on Youtube I could puke my boots up in frustration if I could be arsed to generate the energy to do so. I know I don't laugh anymore when I see yet another Star Wars reference in yet another film or TV show, and on, and on...

The Star Wars universe feels to me like it is over exposed, it's not 'mine' anymore, has George sold out? Has my beloved Star Wars just become the McDonalds of the movie world instead of the dream?

On the cusp of a new season of 'the Clone Wars' show and yet another Star Wars TV show and online game and console game, and new book, and new comic, and.......Toaster? And god knows what else, maybe only time will tell, or maybe the Mc3P-0 with fries and a large Jawa juice to wash it down with are just around the corner and the Dark Times are now?

Who knows, feel free to wallow in my moaning and offer an opinion

A Heart Felt Plea

A fellow Deviant, brought my attention to a news article she had created:

[link]

It is a petition against animal cruelty which I ask all who can to take note of and put their name to.

If your not to sure if you should or not, just have a think about the following:

Many years ago an English Lord called Locksley is rumored to have told his son before he left to fight in the Crusades, ' Son, wherever you see suffering or hardship and it is within your power to help, you must do so.' His son was called Robin.

Many years later, finished fighting in the Crusades, he returned...

Not anymore, it is Torchwood, its own stand alone show that from time to time links up with Doctor Who.

If you have never seen Torchwood, do it, even if you don't dig Doctor Who, Torchwood is on a completely different level, no world! If you do decide to take the plunge, make sure it is the uncut for adults versions to get the full blown gore, sex, drugs and rock 'n roll of the show.

Still Calling all Artists

The creators of the Dreamscape Comic are currently looking for artist, so I said I would mention it in my journal for them, anyone looking to break in to the world of sequential art, this could be an opportunity you maybe looking for.
Hush

I pulled a late one last night, I finally finished the image of R.O.E. for Overground comics, to be posted later today when i have a chance to cast none blurry eyes over it. I then spent until stupid O'clock reading the final two chapters of the Batman two-parter, Hush.

I've been glued to it since the very first page of volume one, it is such a well written comic and I haven't read such a great Batman story in such a long time it has made me fall in love with the character all over again. I can't stress how brilliant it was to read about Batman being a detective and not just some 'deep' and brooding caped crime fighter in tights thumping the snot out of over tiered villains.

I haven't enjoyed reading Batman this much since all of those years ago when he first headed up the JLA, which was nice to see a bit of dialogue within Hush Volume one between Batman and Superman lamenting to this point too. If you like Batman and want to see him when he is on his top form, if you can find a copy, or even borrow a copy, go do it now and give it a read.

Sunshine

OOooh, the sun has got his hat on, hip-hip-hip-, you know how it goes

The sun has come out to play at long last

It makes me think of that Will Smith song from back when he was just a fresh Prince, oh those were the days.....

Still Calling all Artists

The creators of the Dreamscape Comic are currently looking for artist, so I said I would mention it in my journal for them, anyone looking to break in to the world of sequential art, this could be an opportunity you maybe looking for. If you are interested, just drop me a note. There is some concept art in my gallery for anyone who might be interested .

[link]

Lock&Load

Due to a hiccup in the space time continuum, I'm still working on the final two pages, they will be making their appearance in my gallery soonish.

Firefly

I've now watched the second episode of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, and discovered that it indeed has been, i can only guess at gun point, given a second season. If the first show wasn't bad enough, the second just added to this steaming pile of poo . So i checked it out on the internet, by the skin of it's teeth it got a second season, despite the general impression it shouldn't have. I've seen the trailer for next weeks episode, it too looks cack.

My point? Why-oh-why does this crap get not only onto my TV but, also get renewed for a second season, when clearly it is naff and Firefly, a fantastic show, not? I'm kinda feeling sorry for Joss Whedon if this is the best he can do now. Or, maybe it is revenge on the TV guys for canning Firefly? That might help me sleep at night if that was the case, has to be it, Joss Whedon is taking his revenge on all of those people that caused Firefly to get dropped by making them watch twenty-six episodes of this mind numbing

Links

Overground Comics:

I can also be found/followed on Facebook (Warning: Crazy axe murdering stalkers might not get excepted ):

[link]rofile

Thanks for looking, reading my crap and see you next time

Howard's 'The Complete Chronicles of Conan'. It is a monster read, it counts in at almost a thousand pages in that really tiny 10 point font, however it is more than worth the effort. On and off it has been almost a year from cover to cover. I remember reading 'The Lord of the Rings' all those years ago, another fatty of a tome, and enjoying every page of it, well, there was a few songs it could have done with out, but hay you can't have everything. Why am I comparing the two? Well i was relieved when i finished LOTRs, a great book, but i just wanted to get to the end. With Conan, I really don't want it to end It has been such a great adventure that when I turn that last page it will be like saying good by to an old friend. A lesson learnt there on knowing your limits when it comes to your work load, hoping it will all come together and knowing it will all come together are two very different things indeed.

Calling all Artists

So the creators are currently looking for any artist, letters, colourists, etc. They have a stack of scripts, so there is plenty of work to go around, anyone looking to break in to the world of sequential art, this could be an opportunity for you. If you are interested, just drop me a note.

Beam Me Up!

I've just seen Star Trek and the Wolverine origins movies, . Both i can highly recommend to any body, especially Star Trek, don't be freighted by it being a Star Trek film if your not a fan of the franchise, it totally rocks . I hear the guys are signed for three films, let’s hope they get made.

Check it out here:

[link]

As for Wolverine, stay for the credits!! There are two alternate endings at the end of the 3-4 minutes of credits, one featuring Wolverine or one featuring Deadpool, it all depends on the print you get when you go to see it! A scam to get you to see it twice and sit painfully through all the shopping list of credits? Maybe, but it's worth a go, the Deadpool one sounds by far the best, i got the Logan ending at my viewing.

Foxy

And why we are on the subject of films, the robot films are on the horizon and getting ready to battle it out this summer: Transformers 2 and Terminator: Salvation. Both of which i decided not to bother with at the cinema. However, that was until i saw the new trailers this weekend, both of which left me reassessing this and deciding to go for it. Both of which until this point seemed to have the depth of a puddle on a very hot day.

Here is the link for the Transformers 2 trailer: [link]

There is a bonus of watching the trailer as you get to see Megan Fox draped over a motorcycle in a crop top and hot pants! That alone could have sold me the film months ago

Tweet-Tweet, Bang-Bang!

I read a statistic on Twitter last week that said 60% of new Twitter users don't return after the first week of opening an account, and further more, those of the remaining percentage a further 30% of them don't last the month. Why? They don't say, it could just be that it is just simply shit! This is just a long way of saying I’ve dropped Twitter as an application, not to say I might go back when it's useful for something, I don't know what, but you never know. However for now, gone by-by

Lock&Load

For those who are wondering, mega work load = hold up on the final two pages. Once the backlog is clear though those final two pages will be making their appearance in my gallery.

<im...

 Week #5

Nerf Herding

Hello, I’m back from my two week jaunt to worlds end. Anyone who follows my Twitter/Facebook may have noticed an absence of updates for the last fourteen days. Just a two week break from work etc, which meant I went into hermit like seclusion from everything, including my DA gallery (sorry) to spend some time with my family. (and patch a hole in my attic, long story )

Good news is I’m back and have a stack of art to upload, two more concepts for Dreamscape, just the one left then time to hit some page plans. Which means the final pages of the Lock&Load comic can finally be rendered at long last now I’ll have a bit more time. I’ve got a tribute to one of my favourite comics Frank Miller’s 300 to upload called Leonidas – Duty, the image and the title are based on the chapter image and title from the book. A strange one called The Pink Assassin, just a Saturday afternoon inspired image I came up with and finally my Star Wars Force Unleashed Starkiller image inspired by the very cool character from the video game. Plus there is wide and standard sized wallpapers for each image.

Coming up? Lock&Load pages, the Jason concept for Dreamscape and a few other odd ones.

Who’s Scruffy Looking!?

Publishing: Well missed my first deadline I thought this might happen, reason being I decided to take two weeks off and added an extra chapter to the story to tie it up a lot better than originally planned. So my bad really. Any-who, other than that all going nicely to plan, just need to finish this first story off then get on with the other shorter ones and synopsises for the other ideas in the bag, then it’s the art and concept art, should be done by hmmmmm, September/October this year (fingers crossed).

And that’s it for this week, taking time off left me without much to update for publishing stuff, for those interested sometime, as promised, in the next few weeks I’ll add my evil plan to my journal to getting published.

Oh, yeah, I dropped the forum, it was really sucky and I doubt it would get much use.

Links

The Dreamscape Blog:
[link]

liambauckham.com
[link]

I can also be found/followed on Twitter:

[link]

and Facebook:

[link]

Who’s watching the Watchmen?

I’ve just seen this film and it blew me away, go see it now if you haven’t, read the dammed book too, comics rock and without the creative genius behind them there would be no great films like this or the obvious ones like Batman: The Dark Knight.

I could have almost slapped someone just the other week who said quite genuinely that ‘Comics are just for kids, get a life!’. Well, I’m kinda hoping this arsehole has now seen this film and is reassessing things, though sadly I doubt it, I’m more thinking it went right over his thick head.

Come on guys support comics, especially you guys in the UK where the industry is almost laughable yet has some of the best talent in the world. Which has just reminded me, if you don’t know already, Judge Dredd is a go for a new film, which Rebellion have assured the fans will remain true to its source material and after seeing how it can be done so well today with Watchmen, my hopes are high.

If you are now scratching your head going, ‘Watchmen?’ here’s a link you may find handy:

[link]

Rant over, see the film, buy the book, read the book, lend it to a friend and get them to read it too and the world can be a better place

Thanks for looking, reading my crap and see you next week

Oh, P.S. As I took the last few weeks off, I have a ker-billion messages to catch up with, all of which my goal is to get done by the end of the week. So my apologies here and thanks for waiting.

 Week #4

Nerf Herding
Well it’s more like week eight or nine than four; however I’m working to my own calendar, so it is week four on the road to being published. And that’s what counts, I guess it is a bit of I take your reality and substitute it with my own.

I now have a huge list of art to get completed, in excess of thirty pieces, not including the two comics I’m currently working on and the illustrations for my work to be published. So, that’s it, no more is being taken on, I just can’t see this huge mammoth list getting completed before the end of the year, let alone soon. Sadly it’s looking like a project or two may have to get dropped at the expense of work to be published, though that will be worse case situation, may be some stuff will just get put off until a much-much later date.

Lock & Load Comic: at a stand still, I like to think of it taking a holiday, sitting on a toasty hot beach somewhere, Kirt and Chuck polishing their guns and car waiting to get back on the chase. I’ve got a ‘spurt’ of time coming up on this one, so there should be another five – ten pages hitting the gallery soon.

Dreamscape Comic: grinding forward slowly, have almost finished the final concept art for the character of Caleb, the finals for Summer and Jason are coming soon. The thing that held this up was a drastic ‘re-model’ for the 3D characters I created for these three guys. Not so much Caleb, how ever Jason and Summer I don’t think until now I was ever happy with the 3D models I created. Very happy now though, so next week or two should have the finals done and be looking at some page layouts (at last).

I have a couple of new images uploaded, Aces High and Head Hunter, both also with a standard and widescreen version as wallpaper. I like the Aces High image, obviously based on old skool pin-ups, not sure about the Head Hunter one though, it was just an experiment in creating armour, so on that base I feel it was a success.

One of my pieces has been included in a news feature on DA, called, ‘Fantasy Riders of DeviantART’ and can be found at this link:

[link]

And here is the image, ‘Dark Rider’:

So very chuffed about that, thank you

Who’s Scruffy Looking!?

Publishing: My first writing deadline is looming, it’s looking good so far. The plan is simple, once this main story is done, shelve it and get on with the shorter stories, then review, edit and hit the concept art for the illustrations to accompany the book. Then return to the writing, reedit again, finalise the illustrations and page layouts.
Once that’s sorted, hit the synopsis and concept art for the other ideas. Review and reedit once more, send to the printers, job done. Sort of, just need to get it published then.

So my advice so far after my two month journey? Get organised, get a plan, set some deadlines and stick to it. I use iCal and desktop checklists and post-its to keep track of everything, that way things tend not to go to far wrong. (So far). The plan is the key, which I will post mine here at some point and an acceptance that you are going to have to work your arse off, sleep is a distant memory, friends and family become ghosts, time is your enemy and coffee is your friend.

For those that wonder, I do a 9-5 job too, I grabbed a snapshot of my desk just to prove that both of my work spaces are a bomb site of toys, notes and work:

I guess my friends and family aren’t to ‘ghosty’ at the moment, here is a snapshot of my son Ben when we were having a play at the weekend:

Links
The Dreamscape Blog:
<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://www....

 Week #3

Nerf Herding
This is the last upload of the backstage trip to the Doctor Who sets and the Exhibit this week, I’ve more than milked it enough for now, though I am hoping to get back to Cardiff this year and grab some more

The concepts for main Dreamscape characters for issue one are still crawling through their final phase none again to upload this week, there will be more soon, scouts honour

So this week is just some photos I’ve recently taken of the mad snowy weather we have had here in the isolated countryside.

I am working on another ‘test’ piece of art, this one to do with texturing and lighting armour, long story. It’s called Head Hunter and I’m hoping to get it finished soonish.

Who’s Scruffy Looking!?

I’m getting older this week, too depressed to mention my age here, on the bright side, some ace gifts, one of which is this awesome signed copy of Bad Boy, written by Frank Miller, illustrated by Simon Bisley and also signed by Simon Bisley! Flippin’ rocks thank you Craig

The road to publishing is moving along, just about on schedule for the first short story, was a little concerned last week, however back on track after a few late nights. Just need to stay on track now. (And awake)

I’ve decided to link my Twitter account to my DA page, so anyone who wants to follow and have an insight to my mad little world and the road to getting published, feel free to do so. It’s quite cool actually, I’ve linked it to my Facebook too, one update, three sites, bonus.

That’s it for this week, except I’ve also added the Forum to my DA page too, I’ve started a thread for getting work published. And like I say on the thread, I’m not expecting much until things get exciting (if publishing could be described as that?)

One more thing before I go, here is a photo from my doorstep this morning, it took my breath away when I saw it, the photo is a real disappointment though. Just have a looky and use a bit of imagination

Links
The Dreamscape Blog:
[link]
My BBC Web Comic for Doctor Who:
[link]
liambauckham.com
[link]

Thanks for looking, reading my crap and see you next week

 Week 2

Nerf Herding
Art is moving along, slow, however moving. The second to last upload of the backstage trip to the Doctor Who sets and the Exhibit this week. I have a stack more photos, however their not to great and I feel I’ve milked it enough for now and besides I really need to get on with other projects. So just a few more to tidy and that’s it.

Same with the 501st photos from the comic con last year only one to upload this week and that’s it, yetÂ
…There is another comic con this May I believe, so who knows, I’ll be a bit more focused this year, not so ooo stormtroopers, ooo comics

The concepts for main Dreamscape characters for issue one are crawling through their final phase none to upload this week, hopefully some more soon, Morpheus has had the thumbs up this week from the writers, so cool.

One image this week of art ‘Snake Bite’ with the usual widescreen and standard screen wallpapers. Not sure where this came from, too much Heavy Metal Magazine maybe? Naaa, you can never have too much of that! Again, due to tight deadlines on other projects this images main purpose was for lighting etc. Doesn’t mean it can’t be cool though, it’s type of image that (fingers crossed) will be going together with the published writing bid.

And there is more, just an odd photo or two. Lock and Load, argh! I really want to get that finished and time is such a fickled thing. I was hoping for end of February for a finish, it’s looking like the next chunk of pages will be then.

Who’s Scruffy Looking!?

Snow, It’s been so long since I’ve seen any real snow, today has been totally ace! So much so I had to grab some snapshots from my office window and the nice old building I work in looking all, well, snowy:

Had a shaky week this week just gone on the publishing front, I jinxed it last blog by saying I was going to hit the deadline I set for the writing!! Muppet! I had a bit of a change on a character, which meant a bit of a mad rewrite; for the better though. Drawback, lost two days, may not sound like much but I’m on a mission and I’ve set some real tight deadlines to keep me going. Now I have to get two days back somehow, which means lots of hard work

Other than that, still going to plan! The art, well some trial stuff such as Snake Bite is in my gallery, so that’s going okay. I’m starting to feel the strain on other commitments, such as Dreamscape and Lock and Load though and still struggling with a, ‘Nope, big work load on, just can’t do that!’ Dam my niceness!

However that’s week two on the road to being published, overall, not bad so far (jinxed!)

Links
The Dreamscape Blog:
[link]
My BBC Web Comic for Doctor Who:
[link]
liambauckham.com
[link]

Thanks for looking, reading my crap and see you next week

Week One – Well Sort of!

Art

What a crazy few weeks, I’ve got loads and loads to upload! It was one of those, ‘Hmm if I just get this finished then I’ll upload it with the others…’ Bad idea! Before I knew it I had 23 photos and art renders to upload to my gallery. Lesson learnt

So, more concepts for Dreamscape, a load more random photos too, amongst them some more from my backstage trip to the Doctor Who sets and the Exhibit (still a few more to go too), some random art and a ‘grindhouse’ style poster of Lock and Load, few...

Nerf Herding

Getting published how’s that going?

It’s on the right track already, I have a plan, not fool proof they never are, however as close as I can get it. It’s already meant lots of late nights and cutting out completely all the random art and taking on any more commissions for anybody which is tougher than you think. Once you get in a habit of doing art for people when they ask, it’s tuff to turn them down. I have a couple of images I want to get done, so I’m going to work these into any tests I might need, lighting etcÂ

I’ve set some very strict deadlines for stages of work that I intend to use to get published and so far so good. My first deadline other than the one for the Lock and Load comic and Dreamscape art is to get the first ‘book’ finished for a set of short stories and several synopses I have ideas for too. Once these are done it’s the concept art and layouts for the book and a couple for the synopses. Next it’s… Well you’ll have to wait, however the concepts will get uploaded to my gallery once their done.

Crimbo and New Year were great, I hope everyone else had a great one, lots of mad stuff and fun with friends and family. Going back to work sucked though, I found it really hard this year and it’s been a struggle since despite a manic work load. Let’s hope it improves before I have to kill someone .

Here is a photo of my son Ben, it was great, he dropped off on one of our weekend strolls. He looked so cute I just had to take a photo of him in his Kyle hat (south park – I couldn’t get it in green )

Kids, they just rule. Whenever I think about chucking it in trying to make it as a writer and artist I just have a look at him and think, ‘Bugger, I’m really doing this for you aren’t I?’ It makes me pull my finger out like you wouldn’t believe.

Time to go, but before I disappear new Doctor? Hmmmm… New Battle Star Galactica, New Terminator chronicles (not the pant’s new film that just looks like Transformers 2!) New Lost! Have to be careful with my time otherwise I’ll spend it all in front of the TV.

Links
The Dreamscape Blog:
[link]
My BBC Web Comic for Doctor Who:
[link]

Thanks for looking, reading my crap and see you next week

 Week Zero

Art
The art has been going just nuts this week, a minor tweak to page three of lock and load, bet no one even noticed
The concepts for main Dreamscape characters for issue one are in their final phase and will be uploaded soon plus a load more random photos too, amongst them some more from my backstage trip to the Doctor Who sets and the Exhibit.

Talking of doctor Who, I felt inspired last night and came up with a new festive image call Christmas on Europa, there is also a couple of wallpapers too, one in widescreen and a standard (1024x768).

My favourite image I’ve uploaded this week has to be this one of a lost toy bear I found:

I was just ambling to work, Guns n’ Roses blaring out on my MP3 one frosty morning this week and I spotted this little stuffed bear just perched on the wall. So I grabbed my crappy mobile phone and snapped a shot, some guys walking and driving past thought I was mad. It has a cute factor to it and it’s a good shot too, though my fave thing about it is it proves you just need the right lighting a bit of skill and a dollop of luck when it comes to taking photos, the camera doesn’t matter, it’s really all about capturing moments

Check this guys work out, it totally :

I stumbled across his work and it blew me away, here are a few samples for you, take a look at his gallery:

Nerf Herding
Well, what’s up with the blogy-journal thingy? I’ve decided to make better use of my DA gallery, I must admit I’ve neglected it for a bit too long now, so I thought it was time I pulled my finger out a bit. You may have noticed I’ve called this journal Week Zero. And that it is an early new year’s resolution to get finally published or be well on the road to being so by the end of 2009. Part of that challenge is to update my journal at least once a week and keep a track of how it’s going. If all goes to plan, hopefully the journals might help a few other guys out on their way, avoiding my mistakes The other part is my journal might just well keep me sane on the journey too

It’s xmas eve, my amazing son Ben’s first one at home too, so here is a photo of us putting up the xmas decs:

I love him to bits, he has become the driving force behind everything I do. Quite frighteningly, this time last year no one knew if he would be around to celebrate Christmas this year. Here he is though, stronger than ever and driving me and my hot, beautiful girlfriend mad! (I had to say how hot and beautiful my girlfriend is there, it’s rare a nerd like me gets a girl...

Look, man, if there's one thing I know, it's how to drive while I'm stoned. You know your perception is completely fucked so you just let your hands work the controls as if you were straight.

Oh my, the year is almost at an end, only a few mince pies and a turkey to be eaten a few gifts to be traded and the family ‘thing’ to get out of the way it we’re more or less done! Smoking-crap did this last twelve months fly by or what?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not wishing away the next week and a bit, I can’t wait, I’ve only a few of my chocolates in my Dalek advent calendar to go, all of my wrapping to do and a cake to finish. There is a few more from the studio tour and some from the exhibit too that turned out really well I’ll be uploading.

Photography, (model making as well) it’s my hobby, my art I class as my ‘moonlighting’. Where do I find the time? Anyway, I’ll be uploading odd photos etc as well from time to time, all I ask is if you use any for stock, just let me know, if it’s for commercial use, defo ask first, an old scratched record here but I’m sure most will agree, if anyone is making money from my work, it should be me, that said I’m always open to talks

And that’s about it for now, have a good Christmas and new year and as always, thanks for looking

<img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/biggrin.gif"...

Doctor Who

Wow, a whole month has flown by since my last update. I blame a flux in the space time continuum for the whole event, one minute it's October now it's creeping to mid November, weird!

Due to the influence of evil forces at work my art and writing ground to an almost holt this last four weeks, things are back on track now though and moving on again. The elusive Batman image will get finished and displayed soonish, the concepts for Dreamscape are now in their second phase of fiddling and are soon to be done. Lock and Load the comic is starting to come together, i admit i promised to upload the first page a while back, however i thought a few pages at a time would make more sense, more to read

So i mentioned Doctor Who at the top?

Well i was one of the luck few who had a visit to the sets this weekend passed, i've been in THE TARDIS, i've been in THE Torchwood Hub and visited Sarah Jane's attic! I met Dalek's Cybermen, Scarecrows, Ood, cast and crew, the whole thing.

You know what, I'm still reeling from the whole thing, i'm expecting at some point to stand up and go, 'Aaargh! I was there!' at the top of my voice.

So how does this help my deviant friends? Well i took in excess of over 400 photos of the day, all back stage stuff, some plot spoilers too.

Now, i'm not uploading all of them, however i am going to upload some of the better ones for anyone who's a Doctor Who, Torchwood or Sarah Jane fan to enjoy a taste of the wonderful mind blowing experience that i had.

I will be uploading them two or three at a time as i get them cleaned up a bit, the first if all goes to plan will be tonight. So enjoy a sneak peek behind the scenes of possibly the best TV show ever. What do I mean possibly! It is the best TV Show ever!!!

Plot spoilers?? I just don't do them, it's for your own good, trust me

However, i will give you these two:

One: I am uploading a photo of Capt. Jacks new car!

Two: Watch Children in Need this Friday on BBC One (UK Only), not just because you should anyway, it's a great cause, give generously, however an added bonus is not like last year a Doctor Who one off, but the first two minutes of the Christmas special. Not impressed? You will be, i've seen it already, it blew my socks off!

Enough ramble for now, enjoy the photos and the art/writing and thanks for looking

Well it’s another mad day at the office!

It’s been awhile since I updated my journal, so I thought I’d get my finger out and stop slacking

I’ve got stacks of art either uploaded or about to be uploaded depending on when you read this, it’s been a productive and smashing month so far, in more ways than one.

Still no Batman picture, it’s in my head I just need to sit down and get it on paper, loads of design/concept stuff done for the Dreamscape comic, though not the finals. Liam the writer of Lock&Load will be happy to hear that there is the final line concept of the Kit character now done too. Just a colour group image then the pages

And as a bonus of my current addition to Star Wars Force Unleashed I’ve just finished a what I like to think of as cool, rendering of a Wookiee, which is also set as two styles of wallpaper. (Nothing fancy, just std and widescreen sizes).

And this leads me to the smashing news, my poor Seven of Nine sculpture, finished and half painted and now in several pieces! My girlfriend knocked her on the kitchen floor recently, my kitchen floor being made of nice stone tiles. Which means the impact was interesting. Not sure at this point if she can be saved, I’d like to as I spent so much time on it, but at this point the jury is out.

So this brings us up to date, apart from the writing, which is almost there.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the work

Well it’s been a few weeks since my last update, my nine month old son Ben has learnt his first two words, ‘Hello’ and ‘Ma-ma’, which is ace, It could have been worse, I do swear an awful lot , don’t get me wrong, but it could have been, ‘Da-da’ that would have been much better, though my girlfriend has been working on the Ma-ma thing with him for an extraordinary amount of time, law of averages really. Though don’t read this as putting the little guy down, that’s pretty good for a nine month old.

Anyway, to business, art, things have squiffed like they do, a curve ball landed right in my mitt and I went with it If anyone actually reads these, they will be aware I’ve recently been offered two comics to illustrate, if you can also remember it was a bit of a dilemma, cos I find illustrating comics a bit of a nose bleed. Well, saying that, I didn’t always, had a bad experience, I digress: point is I was offered a gig illustrating an issue way off for a great comic called Dreamscape, the scripts I got to read are just amazing!

Off the back of that I picked up an open ended deadline for another comic which rocks call Lock&Load. All was going well, a hic-up and a burp later things changed and the Dreamscape comic I wasn’t due to start on for months has now to my delight become my main priority, which is ace, the comic script that got me back into wanting to work with comics again and I’m getting to do the first issue plus several more from just doing issue 13! Rock and Roll! All I can say is thank you to the guys who are the brains behind the scripts for their faith in me.

Other things will still be going on, the short stories, the Lock&Load comic, etc..

Well thanks for reading, viewing, watch this space for more

Another week or two flashed by, I think I must be getting old, last time I looked at a calendar it was December 2007, now it’s almost September 2008. So you can guess at my surprise and my need to add a calendar to my Christmas list for Santa.

Things are popping along, I just wish the DA site would keep up, I’ve just uploaded three images and the still haven’t filtered through the system, oh well, anyone reading this, they are probably visible now.

Whine over.
The art is coming on, the short stories are almost done, though I must admit I had a full on panic attack this week and questioned my ability to draw at all. Looking at the images I’ve done recently I just knew I could do comic art at one point in my life but now…? It just hasn’t happened though. So I dug through some old folders from 2003 when I last did any real traditional comic art and found art that made me think that I’d lost my way and it’s time to buckle up buttercup and get back on the horse. You can see the image that I’m taking about in my gallery, if it ever appears (Grrr, slow DA servers), it’s called the last son of krypton.

Looking at the line art, I’m thinking, hmmmm, if only I kept it going!

We live and learn, which brings me onto my Judge Dredd picture, one of my ‘let’s do it right’ images that followed the epiphany on Monday night when I saw my superman line art.

I’ve also just uploaded the first of the final line art character images for the comic Lock&Load, more to follow soon including at long last some pages!

Rambled enough, thanks for looking

Yes, I’ve dusted of the old scripts and giving it a good going over, so watch this space (Yeah I know I said to hell with it last time, but hay

I’m also working on a painting of old stony face himself, Judge Dredd, a bit of an experiment, so we’ll see how it turns out too, oo, not to forget the sculptor of Seven of Nine from Voyager is reaching its conclusion, photos to be taken and posted soon too.

I’m looking to finish of the short stories that I was hoping to get done and posted to DA a while back call Azmath. I think that’s about it, to keep up with such a large work load, how do I find time to do anything else you ask? if you are wondering, just don’t sleep!

AND I almost forgot, got a bit inspired the other night and created a Doctor Who image called The Last of the Daleks, that one did require a loss of sleep for real that night But it’s here on DA feel free to have a look.

Enjoy and thank you for looking, the pleasures all mine

Just a quick journal update, the comics are going well, I’ve at this point got the two main guys concepts upload to DA for the first comic I’m working on the art for, not in the style I’m actually illustrating the comic weirdly, just having a bit of a play, but hay, that would be easy

I’ve finished reading the scripts for comic number two for another group of writers, they just rock, the Lock and Load comic is just for fun and to get my ‘game-back’ as it were as it’s been a few years.

Which is strange, after spending a lot of time working on some comics, getting fed up with the whole thing and playing with 3D and digital manipulation for a while, I’ve got to say I’m loving doing the comic art old school style once more.

I get such a great buzz when one is done, I’ve not stopped drawing since I started, I feel my art taking a step back but moving forward in a great leap at the same time. I think in my head it’s easier to see this as a form of art, and I must say I always felt like it was a comprised image whenever I finished any 3D or photo-fiddling.

Enough for now, Joss Whedon has created what can only be described as the maddest thing ever called Dr Horrible, check it out while you still can at the following link:

TTFN

Well I’ve decided to take the plunge back into the world of comic illustration again, hankies at the ready for the oncoming nose bleeds! If I can get away with it I’m planning to publish as much as I can to my DA page, we’ll see how the writers feel first though.

On the topic of comics, good news, I’ve just had a 6 page short Doctor Who webcomic published by the BBC. It’s not difficult to get done, but you know, I did it so I feel a little entitled to blow my own trumpet for a few bars!

It can be found here:
[link]

And the snazzy cover I put together for it can be found here:
[link]

Oh, Doctor Who, for those that will be glued, along with me, to the edge of their seats, is there a new Doctor? Has Russell T Davies pulled the blinder of the decade and managed to keep this a secret from the whole world? I guess we’ll find out later tonight.

There has been lots of other bonkers stuff these last few weeks, Foo Fighters gigs, Glastonbury Festival, Ben almost figuring out how to crawl, oh the list goes on.

Until next time, which I’ll try not to leave for so long, be good!

You never saw George Clooney in ER asking nurse Hathaway for a size ten chair when he was doing brain surgery did you? So how is it going to precisely take an eye out?

One of her other gems was, ‘Stranger stuff happens at sea.’ Not ever having the privilege of being a cabin boy I don’t feel qualified to answer this one. However there is some relevance to my waffle, there always is if you manage to get to the end

I guess the ‘stranger stuff happens at sea’ is relevant because I seem to remember not so long ago swearing that I would never illustrate a comic again as sequential art gives me a nose bleed and I have better things to do, well, having said that, the strangest thing happened just the other day.

A script was given to me just last week by a friend on behalf of a friend sort of thingy, and asked if I would be interested, being the type of guy I am, I though why not! I’ll have a read and if it’s good then have a think about it.

Well, the scripts are better than good, they are mouth salivatingly good, they are a nuclear-blast of fresh air, mind blowing good. They are the sort of thing you read and think, ’Why the fuck didn’t I think of that idea first!’ So now here is the dilemma, do I go for it and illustrate the comic or say no … ?

Watch this space for more

Did I say there was stormtroopers too? Anyway, I almost popped after having to queue for an hour, by the time I got through the door my head was going to explode!
But I managed to hold on and not paint the walls with my grey matter.
I must admit I’m about to wet in my pants and it’s still a long painful two days away.

What you may think is only two days away and can I also wet in my pants? Well, yes if you like that warm trickling sensation to the second and it’s the Bristol International Comic Expo this weekend to the first!!!!!

It’s the one weekend a year where I get to mingle with thousands of my own kind, get my photo taken with loonies dressed as Stormtroopers, meet my art and writing heroes and let’s not forget, eat, smoke, drink, wear, breath and rub all over my dressed to look geek cool, (but not as a cliché geek cool, no-no, that would be just sad) body with COMICS!!!

It’s all just way to exciting for someone my age to deal with, having to work on these lovely hot and sunny days and not sit in the pub with a cold one is hard enough, but counting down the micro seconds until the gates of nerd heaven open on top of this, well, it’s like pulling rusty nails through my eyes whilst watching my Star Wars memorabilia burn like Darth Vader at the end of return of the Jedi.

I just can’t take it, I think the only solution is to pull a sicky, go to the nearest pub to the Comic Expo and camp out until the doors open at 10:00am on Saturday. My employer will understand, they are a reasonable bunch of guys….

….On second thoughts, no, they’re not, their like the fracking Borg from Star Trek. There was a story going around that they have been implanting microchips into those that don’t conform, and this would be a defo chip implant situation should I get rumbled. Knowing my luck I’ll get designation 6 of 9 or something poo like that. Best go covert like Sam Fisher, keep my head down and avoid any suspect ‘One-2-One’ meetings until Monday when I’ll be nursing my comic overload hangover.

Honestly, it’s like giving a six year old a sack of sugar and a crate of RedBull to wash it down with!

Ooo, don’t forget to look at my new image and the ones for the people I keep adding as friends, and keep an eye out for something a bit different I’m uploading on Friday. Well I say different, different for me any how!

Be-Good!

And SMEG! I've just noticed my Subscription has run out! It’s time to renew that baby ASAP. Why was there no email or warning from the guy’s at DA?? I can barely remember to get out of bed in the morning and go to work, let alone when a subscription I started a year ago is about to run out. Oh, well, I’ll live. Just the dilemma of more comics this weekend or renew the subscription? Only fate can decide….

In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.

-	I’d like to say that’s one of mine, but it’s not, I have to thank the late and very great Douglas Adams for it.

Some update coming this weekend if everything goes to plan, and everything always goes according to plan

So I guess that’s one thing. I’m almost there with turning one of my doomed web comic ideas into a series of short stories, so they could be popping up here soonish.
I watched a trailer for the new star wars TV show due to air in the fall, without going into one of my star wars purest rants, George give it a rest why don’t you! I’d put a link up but I just can’t bring myself to look at it without feeling a rage of pure hate take over me.

On that note I will say tar-tar for now (I’m English so one can say such things as tar-tar) and leave you with a quote from one of my favourite TV shows Spaced, it’s from a scene set in a comic shop and a young boy has just asked for a Jar-Jar Binks toy –
Tim: You are so blind! You so do not understand! You weren't there at the beginning. You don't know how good it was! How important! This is it for you! This jumped-up firework display of a toy advert! People like you make me sick! What's wrong with you?! Now, I don't care if you've saved up all your fifty &#039's, take your pocket money and get out!
[The little boy runs off, crying]
Tim: What a prick.

The shit just got real...

Not much happening in funky town this week, in fact this week has gone by too fast. It feels like there has been a hiccup in the space time continuum that has resulted in me losing most of the last seven days. It’s a frightening thought that some time manipulating fiend has taken away all my free time, I was going to use it to do loads of amazing things, honest. I was going to finish the ten billion ideas for images I have all fighting for space in my head, jot down the other 50 billion ideas I have for stories too and flea my cat Treacle. Who is now looking at me scratching her ear in a way most of us can only dream of doing!

Once that was all out of the way, it’s was going to be some quality time with the Playstation, SNES and Wii. They are starting to look neglected; I can almost write my name in the dust on the old PS.

But no, there has been some intergalactic conspiracy to steal away my free time and use it for evil purposes, like, stealing socks from peoples washing machines or hiding my keys when I’m in a hurry, there never where I leave them, someone is moving them, it’s not me going mad!
What a minute, it is me going mad. Bugger…Â

Hopefully uploading some stuff next week

Be good, just like the little alien that died, came back to life again, made a BMX (they were cool) fly, made his finger glow and left the little boy called Eliot behind to take all the shit from the guys with the sun glasses and guns, sorry, sorry, mobile phones, they are less menacing, and they don’t as an official body of the government want to appear menacing to children, unless you mock them, they don’t like mocking!

1000 page views!

It only seems just the other day I had my first one. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to look at my page so far and favourite any of my work or leave any comments. I’m guessing only half of the visits were by mistake, I can live with that. Here’s to the next 1000 views.

It’s been another mad week of baby vomit and little sleep, I think I may have gone a little mad, cos I simply don’t care, the little guy is so dammed amazing when he wakes you up at 3am screeching for food you can’t help looking at him as you stagger half asleep in the sickly red glowing Winnie the Pooh nightlight that dimly illuminates everything like a darkroom, and thinking, ‘aww, but he’s so cute.’

See, I’ve gone sick in the head!

Back to the art, I finished the Alien picture, found here:

[link]

I lost count of the layers, I think no more than 100 and no less than about 90. There was a lot of texturing on the Alien. I based to look on a sculpture I made years ago, when I painted it I made it look like it was made of a rusty-leathery stuff. Hard to explain, and I gave it away too, so no photo to show you. Point is, I’ve tried to ‘re-capture’ the look for the skin of this alien.

I’m also playing with cel-shading in 3d, which is strange, use 3d to make a copy of a 2d image, or there abouts. So my first try is the 1000 views thingy I did, so Simbar, we’ve come full circleÂ

Not much going on this last week, just lot’s of not-sleeping and baby poo and sick. Art wise I’ve just finished another painting, yes that’s two in a row now, so sticking to my statement last time of more painting, less 3D. I loved doing the painting; it’s a pin-up old style, very random thing to have done, but none the less great fun. My next image is a bit more ambitious, it’s an Alien (from the movie) about to eat some poor victim. It’s my most digital painting-3D photo-fiddle image to date; I’m about half way through and already on my 76th layer in Photoshop. One word of advice I would give anyone doing this sort of thing is to remember to name your layers and save regularly. I only thought about naming the layers once I got past 50 something, so making some changes to the earlier layers later was very interesting indeed.
Why an Alien image? Why not and Alien and a Predator? Cos the films Alien Vs Predator are, for lack of a better word, shit! How Fox Studios can take such a giant dump on a great movie franchise as Alien with these films is beyond me. I’m embarrassed to admit that in a disjointed way I sort of work for the money grabbing media whores they’ve become. The great films linked to the label, now look at what they do. I guess it was a giveaway when the called the new film AVPR! What a great title for a film, its right up there with the greats.
Oh well, that’s my rant over, just one word of advice, don’t, no matter how much you feel the urge, don’t go see the new Alien Vs Predator film, Rent out Alien instead and see something class.
Stay shinny

I’m back…!

Well I’ve been gone now for several weeks (creeping up to about two months now). It’s been a completely bonkers time. It all started the first weekend of December when my amazing son Ben was born, almost three weeks early, all was going well for a few days, and then things took an unexpected turn. Sadly Ben has heart condition; I’m not going to go into the details, as they are long and not very exciting anyway.
However after several weeks of hospitals, operations and stress & tears, he’s finally home, and more importantly happy. The condition his heart has will never go away, so I guess it just makes him extra special. And to be honest, to look at him now he has recovered from the worst of it, you would never know anyway.
So for all the support from everyone, family, friends, doctors, nurses and everyone else to numerous to mention, thank you, thank you so much, you all help with what up to now has been one of the most difficult times in my life so far. Big hugs and thanks to you all.
So I’m back now, I’ve just caught up with everything and uploaded the first picture in several weeks, strangely a painting of my amazing girlfriend Jo and our fantastic son, Ben. I think I might go back down the painting route more in the future; I really enjoyed the whole process.

Be shinny, Simon.

….Who’s scruffy looking!

Again another week and a bit has flown by, where does it go? It’s sure not at the back of my fridge where I found that half eaten bar of chocolate I’d forgotten about (score!). It must be my age.

I came to a big decision last night, I could get both of my web comics up and running, but that would leave no time for anything else, no more art or writing, or I could leave the web comic idea behind, as much as it pains me because of all of the hard work that’s gone in to it these last few months and get back to doing more art and writing like I used to.

So the web comic idea is gone :0(

Let’s not be sad about it, it was a case of myself being greedy and want it all. And sequential art does get on my tit’s as much as I love it. Who knows, one day when I’ve nothing better to do than teach younglings the ways of the force, I might kick back and get the dammed things finished in my lunch breaks. Yes even Jedi get lunch breaks. Although, I’ve always seen myself as a bit of a pirate and smuggler, the Han Solo thingy, more than a Luke sky walker. So maybe I’ll be a wise old rogue passing on my knowledge of how to make the kessel run in under twelve parsecs to some cocky farm kid? My friend James is quite fuzzy, maybe he could be a wookie side kick? Who knows, I digressÂ

Moving on, this means I should be publishing some short stories as well as more images to my gallery in the none too distant future, so watch this space, some may even be linked to my long forgotten web comic ideas. It also means I’ll have more time for you too, yes my long ignored but never forgotten guys on Deviant art.

So things aren’t too bad really.

The Force is With You......

Has it been almost a month? Bugger, I’m shit sometimes!

Oh well, the comic is sort of on the way, the plan has changed a bit, but it’s look cool at the moment (He hopes).

I’ve just rediscovered Star Wars, not that I lost it anywhere, like the back of the sofa, it was always there, just on the shelf next to American Graffiti. No, I mean something else. I used to love Star Wars, to the point of therapy, and then the new films arrived and like the rest of the planet, got carried away. And like all good parties, the hangover the next day wore on a bit.
The new films are good, I’m not disputing that, where they ever really needed making? Probably not, but hay, that’s not the point. It’s what happened to the originals, the really fucking good ones, the holy trilogy, the films I grew-up watching so much the VHS tapes were warn to static. They were special, then they got made not so special editions, I forgave that, I kinda got what George was doing.

Then the new films arrived, everything changed, including the original films so they now fit the new three films. And you know what, all 6 films run smoothly from one to the other, it’s clinical. And there’s the problem, it’s all to smooth. With the digital effects and all that jazz, it lost something special along the way, Star Wars was always meant to be a Saturday morning sci-fi show but in a movie format. It was meant to ruff round the edges, that’s why it worked, now those ruff edges are gone, and so are my memories.

Then I discovered the DVDs with the original Cinema cut of the films, at first dismissed by myself like possibly so many others as a money spinning scam by the George Lucas money machine.

Then I watched them. It’s all there, as it should be, from the smudgy camera lens hiding the speeder wheels, to Han Shooting that scum-o Greedo first, to the booby of the green chick dancing in Jabba’s palace falling out in the middle of her dance routine. It even has the old guy back as Anakin at the end of JEDI.
If you’re a Star Wars fan and you don’t own these original edits of the films, go get them now! Forget about the shinny CGI Yoda and watch him the way he should be. Made of foam rubber with Frank Oz’s hand firmly up his arse making his eyeballs move! He looks and feels much more real!

Just like Ben said, the force will be with you, always…..
And he knew what he was fucking talking about .

The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia; but only slightly less well known is this: never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!

What a bonkers few weeks, as always, sorry for not getting back to people (I always seem to start with that one), but I’ll be catching up with you soon as.
My web comic has taken a turn down Weird Street, I’ve thought of another idea which I really-really like, so…. I’m going to try to run two at once, which will be interesting as the amount of time it’s taking to get one finished. Two comics that couldn’t be further apart though, one is called Crusade and will probably take the longest to get done, the new one I hope to fit in to the great scheme of things is a once a week job called Azmath. If my head doesn’t explode first, then Azmath will be up and running shortly, just need to iron out the creases, so watch this space!

September 19th (Which is tomorrow or maybe not, depends when you are reading this really) is International Talk Like A Pirate Day!
Here is the link for the site for those who are interested:

[link]

So don’t forget to spend all day talking like a pirate on the 19th and just to make everyone think you’ve gone mad, don’t tell um why you’re talking the way you are, just let them assume you a bit strange. It makes it much more fun that way.

My internet connection hasn’t died for a few weeks now, so things are looking up on that front now. I’m still working on my (fingers crossed) soon to be released webcomic. I haven’t worked on a comic for ages and forgot just how much work goes into producing one, so if you’re thinking of dabbling in that area, be sure it’s truly what you want to do is my advice.
As a great man once said, life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look round , bla, bla , bla… Well you all know it and I don’t have time to go into it now, and for those who haven’t seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off, shame on you!

It’s been a nut’s few weeks again, the pirate career is looking more like an option as each day passes by, the only draw back is despite what the films say (Cos they never lie), they all seem to end up with a sticky ending after a short go at it.

I can’t think of a cool pirate name either, so until I do, I’m stuck with the day job that seems to take over the night, breakfast, lunch and most of sleepy time as well.

Well it’s work, work, work, unlike Deviant Art the last few days which has been, crash, crash, crash every time I try to update or upload anything.

I’m over it now though. I’m not bitter, much. But I’m still working far to much :0(

Nothing to upload this week! I’ve been so busy I’ve not had time to finish anything off, I’ve even been rude and only just caught up with all my messages (Sorry everyone).

The good news this week?

…..hmmmm.?

…I’ll get back to you on that one.

Time and tideÂ

‘Time and tide wait for no man’, a wise person once said. So I guess it’s time to move on to the new day and remember the old with fond heart.

So, what have I been up to? Loads. Moving on mostly, rolling around in mud at Europe’s biggest music festival - Glastonbury. A great time was had by all, (despite the rain, mud and sunburn!). I concede to my old man about the rock group ‘The Who’, they are one of the best rock groups ever. Spent three days watching some of the best music talent on offer, just to watch them all blown away by two of the oldest groups there, The Maniac Street Preachers and The Who. A sad reflection on most of the rock bands around at the moment.

And I’m going to be a father on the 20th of December!!! (OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Yes it’s now official, my girlfriend had a scan just last week and the little sprog (Gender as yet unknown) is due then.

Things are a-changing, I just hope I can keep up with them….

Much that once was is lost

The world is changed.
I feel it in the water.
I feel it in the Earth.
I smell it in the air.
Much that once was is lost.

-	LOTR Fellowship of the Ring

Many days have now passed since I last graced Deviant Art with my presence. A lot has happened in this short and drawn time. I can truly say that I have experienced one of the most elevating and joyous experiences of my life. And in a shadowy contrast one of the saddest and most heartbreaking experiences also.

It’s strange, as I find so frequently in life that one will often follow the other hand in hand, and often in a similar vain. As it comes to pass in this instants, the creation of life and the loss of life.

The world that I know is changed forever, a darker, lesser place left wanting.
But yet, as I look forward to the horizons, there is promise and a new hope of a brighter day, where the sun will shine through all the clearer for the times that have passed.

So it is time to rejoice, the times of the life that has been lost and the life yet to come into this world. But for me the grief is still to close for the fun and laughter of celebrations.

Yet there is joy in my smile despite the hollow pain in my heart, for time is the great healer it has been in the past and I know that soon my world will change once more for the brighter.

…….I wish!

Isn’t it annoying how work can consume your life sometimes? I can count the average amount of sleep I had each day of the last week or so on one hand, and I must have flown more miles up and down this country in one week than I did in all of last year.

But I’m now going to try and catch-up on all my messages the fifty-billion emails and outstanding artwork as soon as poss! Batten the hatches and brace the main sail, we set sail for lots of typing and hard work!

My cats are now working on solar-powered killer frogs in their latest attempted to take over the world, how do I know this? Most mornings I find them carrying dead frogs from their secret hidden lab somewhere behind the sofa.

(I think Treacle broke the scratching post death-ray by swing to much on the string ball that hangs from the top, bit of a design fault as the main firing mechanism).

Yippy! I now have an Apple Mac! That’s all I have to say about that, other than, why did I wait so long?!

Wow, it’s been a week? Yes it most certainly has been a week!

What can I say, complications arose, ensued, were overcome. Now as fortuitous as ever, I’m back and here to linger until the next time I disappear that is.

My cat’s are acting more like Pinky and the Brain now than ever, certainty is high there is a most foul plot afoot in the cat domain that is my home. (I swear that I caught one of them building a death-ray with the scratching post just this morning).

The missing week was naught for vain though, there will be several new pictures being added to my gallery this week. Even one or two good ones I may add, I’ve been recently discovering the joys of nodes and image based lighting in my rendering efforts.

So I say, ‘the choice is yours, your goods or you lives?’
