So I've been thinking about taking another BA after I finish this one and before I go on to grad school in archaeology....and the new degree I've been thinking about is art...graphic art and animation, more precisely. I've always wanted to do freelance concept art and stuff like that, but with my current schedule I just don't have time to work on art like I want to, or to progress or improve.....art school would fix that, force me to paint a lot and teach me tricks.

Yeah....but degrees are expensive....and I'll be paying off my current one for a while. I'm a poor starving student as it is...ok not quite starving, but poor because I eat so much. Heh. I'm cheap enough that I'm making most of my christmas presents for my family...making them jewelry. If I had a better camera, I'd post photos of my jewelry, 'cause the camera I have reflects the flash off the metal so you can't see anything, and without flash is super super blurry.

Another thing is, I need a PhD in what I'm in now in order to get the job I want....if I just got a bachelor's in art I could probably land a job...right? Wrong? I don't know!

I loff my Moises <3
So I have been pretty much inactive artwise lately. Was pretty hectic moving all my crap again and starting school, getting back into that routine and all. This year I have to leave my house 2 hours before my classes start in order to get there on time - quite the change from living on campus!! Starting to hate public transit...

School's going well (sort of), I'm enjoying my classes but already I've missed a bunch of them, and later this week will be missing 4 more days' worth because my boyfriend is flying me to Tennessee and then to Indiana for some T-bird shootouts. Will be fun and worth it, I think. He just got home from Afghanistan, and this weekend was the first time I'd seen him in MONTHS. So next weekend will be good for us, but bad for my school.

All right, so I've been trying to hold back, but SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MY MOMO IS HOMEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Pretty sure I squeeled when he texted me on Thursday night saying his plane was landing and that he was home early from his deployment. :D:D:D:D:D:heart:

He came to pick me up from Vancouver on Friday and took me down to the States to visit for the weekend. We were going to go to an SCA event called Banner War, but that morning I ended up in the ER for a few hours 'cause of another bad gall bladder attack. They were going to do surgery on it but I thought it best to wait until I got back to Canada. It was my first time in an American hospital, and because it was the closest one to us my bf took me to the Army hospital on the base he works at. I was very impressed with the service!!! All the doctors and nurses were super nice and helpful, and didn't treat me like a problem they just want to go away. Normally I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to hospitals because I hate going, but I actually didn't mind this hospital at all. +1 for America (still got a long way to catch up in my books though!)

The did a bunch of scans and tests, including an ultrasound and some kind of heart scan, then they hooked me up to an IV, took some blood, pumped me with 3 litres of fluids and gave me some awesome pain relievers. I could still feel the pain but they meds put me in lala land and I didn't care lol. When I got discharged they gave me some percocet and some anti-spasm pills. Here's to hoping that my medical insurance covers all this...

So in addition to not eating gluten, the doc not told me to stay away from any fat, cholesterol, refined sugars, or corn...I think I'll be eating a lot of soup. And rice.

I was supposed to take the greyhound back up to Canada last night but all the tickets were sold out (bastards!) so I had to miss ANOTHER day of classes.

Anyways I have to run and catch the next greyhound in a few minutes here, and should wrap up this little update. I feel bad 'cause I haven't gotten anything artistic done lately and thought people deserved at least an update on my status :(

Anyways. Sorry for lack of updates. Things have been kinda rough lately...health-wise and financial-wise and stress-wise...like being told to move out of the apartment when I'm done this semester for no reason....so I don't know where I'm going to live next year...

Health-wise...to sum it up, I'm not reacting well to certain meds I'm on and have stopped taking them 'cause there's a risk of stroke. Also from all the migraines I've had lately, I've gone wayyyy over the limit of how much NSAIDS (advil, aspirin, etc) my body can handle, so my intestines/liver/etc are on strike. I have new migraine pills, and am now using aspirin pills with happy amounts of codeine and caffeine, so that I don't have to take as many (my poor insides). I'm assuming the mysterious symptoms I've been having lately are somewhat related...

As for the rest...I'll not get into details, I'm already pretty ranted-out.

Anyways...I have a bunch of WIPs that are almost done, so there should be a flood of new and much much improved artwork coming in from yours truly soon ;)

and looking forward to spring
Hello my lovelies.

So, I'm starting to get back into the swing of things. These things being, of course, school, school, and campus life. I did decidedly terrible on my exams last semester, so I'm hoping to step it up a notch this semester and bring my GPA back up. I got the worst marks I've ever got in university last semester...gonna blame it on my new arrival to this university. >.>

I spent two weeks up north with my parents, then flew down to Seattle to spend a wonderful week with my boyfriend, Mo.

I could write an essay on everything that has conspired in the past month...but I won't. Too many damned essays for school. To sum it up, I had fun :)

I've been decently healthy this last month, no problems such as I had in previous months, thankfully. However, I did get fat over Christmas from all that candy and massive dinners. I'm now trying to live off veggies and lean meats, and as soon as it's nicer outside I want to start going on jogs. Incidentally, I refuse to go out in the rain. I hate rain. I especially hate rain when it turns the snow on the ground into 6-inch-deep slush that, even with my boots, completely penetrates everything to the point where I might as well be swimming.

So, my goals for this semester are to bring up my GPA and to lose this fat. And get my muscle back...all that muscle I had this summer has melted :( I miss my muscles...they were fun. And nice. And hard. And not flabby.

So i finally got in to see a doc yesterday, wasn't the nice ladies that I got the last couple times though. Some grumpy man. I hate that. Anyways, I told him about what I've been experiencing and that I was worried about my kidneys, and he didn't mention anything, so I'm assuming it's ok....

My original problem has cleared up for the moment, but after I begged for at least a prescription, he prescribed me some antibiotics in case it came back suddenly (like it's been doing).

So I'm fine for the moment. Just....incredibly tired. I don't understand it. Maybe I'm still recovering from last week? meh. Last night I went to bed at like, 8pm (which is UNREAL, I'm usually up until about 3am), and decided I would get up at 6AM to get some studying in for tomorrow's exam. Well...I slept in. Until 2pm. like WTF?!!!! I normally sleep 6 hours a night, how the heck did I sleep that much without waking up?

Just one more exam left for me, on Wednesday. Last week sucked...I was working my ass off trying to finish a paper for Friday, and I also had two final exams on friday. I got zero sleep Thursday night, incidentally. So when I staggered back home after my second exam on Friday, I had a 2 hour nap and when I woke up, had a bad fever (again :(). Luckily the fever had broken by the next morning, when I had to go in for another exam. Needless to say though, I didn't get much studying done Friday night.

This coming Friday, I fly up north to visit my parents for Christmas. Will be nice to see my dogs and my horse again :)

Yeah...FAIL! Hopefully these ones work better than the last. *grumbles* Infection came back...with a vengeance. Appears to be gone again, and I have a couple days' worth of antibiotics left, which sucks, 'cause they be messin with my poor stomach.

Also, this week holds for me: writing that dang paper that I'm having trouble with, and studying for three final exams, all of which I have within a day of each other (already had one final, and my last one is a few days after this cluster...). Oh joy. And on the weekend, too. Might not be so bad if...I'd actually gone to most of the classes all semester. I'm such a bad student this year. :( Though I did manage to pull a 90% on my last paper...which is good...'cause I'm gonna bomb the test unless a miracle happens :(

don't you just love politics, war, and the media?
First of all, I'm super stoked about my new computer! It's not quite up and running yet (but it will be tomorrow after my boyfriend brings me a new CPU fan), but the prospect of having a system that can run photoshop and games smoothly is just...plain sexy!! On my current laptop, if I work at a resolution higher than, say, 1000x1000 pixels, strokes lag a lot. Sometimes, I'll make a stroke with a big brush, and then sit back and watch it slowly work its way across the page over the course of the next 30 seconds. Pretty frustrating. Plus, I'm pretty fond of gaming, and my laptop generally has FPS rates of about 5-10. I have screenshots of 1 FPS. It's pretty scary. Anyways...my boyfriend Mo helped me pay for this new system, and ordered all the parts in for me and put them together, and gave me his "old" 22" monitor (barely a year old, and beautiful!!!). I splurged and bought a Razer Lycosa keyboard. I'm going to have to live off rice and beans for the next few months, hahaha!

In other news, I'm rushing to get a paper done for a Classical Studies course on ancient Greece. Funny thing is, I'm writing about the modern America/Iraq war, the ancient Graeco-Persian war, and the way the media (movies in particular) have distorted and manipulated these conflicts through leftist organizations. WHOOHOOHOO!!! HOT TOPIC!!! Bring on the heat, I'm an unabashed right wing supporter. Right wing in theory, really, I can't say I support everything the conservative government does (either Canadian or American! I'm Canadian btw).

My prof is VERY leftist, so...this could be interesting. He's pretty anti-military, anti-war, etc, whereas I'm...extremely pro-military, to say the least. Maybe I'm digging my own grave?

Thoughts? I love talking about this stuff.

Hey guys. Just a quick journal entry this time. I just read (moments ago) about a situation an artist I respect and have been watching for the last couple years (:iconendling:) is going through, and I would like to help out. You can find more into in his journal: [link]

In short, he's got some pretty big medical bills, and I'd like to contribute as I can to help him get through this. I'm super busy with school and life at the moment, but I do have time for speedpaints and sketchs. Some bad and some good
I haven't been very productive lately. I've been trying to do daily speedpaintings, but school's kept me fairly busy. On top of that, last week I came down with what I thought was a normal cold, but then I started getting fevers and migraines. The migraines are common enough, with me, but combined with the fever, I think it may be linked. Then I developed a bit of an infection (don't worry, I won't go tmi), followed by a couple more days of fever. I'm not yet sure if the infection triggered the fevers, or if it's related to something else...perhaps my "cold" was some strain of flu? I'm not sure. Or maybe, as my mom speculated when I spoke with her on the phone tonight, it's something I picked up this summer when I was in the Near East (I got really sick over there). I've been refusing to see the doctor, but my boyfriend and a close friend of mine, who is in nursing school, have been harassing me to get to a doc, and my mom's on my case now too. I hate going to clinics and hospitals with a passion (spent a lot of time there when I was younger). So maybe I'll book an appointment tomorrow...I need to get some sleeping aids anyway. Insomnia's led to me missing a lot of my morning classes, and I'm falling behind on some of my classes, starting to get really stressed about it. Which also doesn't help the migraines

On a brighter note, I was feeling well enough to go to GM Place and watch the Detroit Red Wings at the Canucks! Even though I live in Vancouver (at the moment), I'm not a Canucks fan, but a hardcore Wings fan. One of my friends bought me a ticket, which was super awesome of him (thanks Joel!!). I had a blast, ate too much popcorn, and watched my hockey heroes pwn the Canucks. My throat is still a little sore from cheering and yelling haha. I was one of the very few Wings fans in the audience of thousands of Canucks fanatics. It was interesting. lol

This weekend was my boyfriend's and mine 3-month anniversary. I warned him that I was super sick and likely to be miserable all weekend, but he drove up from Washinton to take care of me (and it worked! I felt much better by Sunday). He's such a sweetheart... :heart::heart::heart:

So You Think You Can Dance Canada!

The American show So You Think You Can Dance has always been a favourite of mine. This year, it has premiered in Canada, and one of my good friends, Izaak Smith, auditioned. He was accepted into the top 200, then made it through to the top 20, and after two weeks of voting he is among the top 16!!!! It's surreal, seeing one of my friends on national tv, not to mention on one of my favourite shows!

ANNOUNCING: Commissions!!

Okay, I'm going to have this as the journal that can be referenced about commission info, rather than typing it out in every following journal.

As some of you know, I'm a full-time university student. I pay for all my schooling myself. In the past three years, I've managed to get by without taking any loans out, but this year my funds have run out, and I've been forced to take out loans. It's all worth it, in the long run, but it does make things a bit tight (especially when the govt gives me the very smallest amount they can for me to get by!). I have a job, but I only get a few shifts a month, so it doesn't make that much of a difference in the long run.

So, I would like to start offering commissions, at what I think is a very decent price, for the number of hours put into them. Yeah so I don't feel like copy/pasting the old formating into here, so here we go.

Basically this is to get my old angsty journal off my front page.

A new journal with a new layout (actually thinking of trying out CSS...if you have any tips, lemme know! I've never attempted CSS before.) will be coming soon.

I have tons to write about!

...I'm just too damn lazy.

For example...I was in Israel this summer, started a blog and all, but the blog only lasted about a week before I just stopped bothering to write. [link]

And that's just one of the things I have to talk about. Recently I've moved, got a serious bf (liek zOMG Sen has a steady bf??!!!!), um, started school again (man remind me not to take any more semesters off school, I just about lost my mind), and...yeah. Lots to talk about.

I have such a short attention span for some things. (namely anything not related to art, fantasy, or fighting)

Anyways on that note I'd like to announce that the previous sketch commission sale (see previous journal entries) is over, and I am now accepting regular commissions, which will be started as soon as I finish off the last few sketch commishes that I'm working on.



I got an xray today. A month and a half ago I messed up my left hand in a swordfight (err...more like a brawl), and after the urging of many people I finally went and got it checked out the other day. Guess what? It's broken! Well, the middle knuckle, anyways, it fractured quite nicely, and the doctor said that depending on how bad it is I might need surgery. I was wondering what all those new bumps were! BONE FRAGMENTS ftw lol XD (gosh I'm tired...I shouldn't write journals when I'm tired...) Anyways the knuckle is pushed down fairly far...when I hold my hand out with fingers stretched, the knuckle bump is about lined up with the vertex (is that the word I'm looking for?) between my thumb and forefinger. And it's big and ugleh ;) And purple. Which is amusing...my hand bruises up (I just kept on swordfighting and kickboxing since the injury, so it gets all freshly bruised and swollen each time - especially after kickboxing) and the only finger that turns purple now is the middle one. Which makes for quite the amusing picture.

So anyways, I went and got my hand xrayed today, but they wouldn't let me see the results :( So I pretty much just have to wait until next week to hear the final verdict on whether or not I need surgery. Needless to say, my mom convinced me to stop fighting for a few weeks to let it heal. Which is all good, because my right wrist is messed up too, something to do with the tendons, and it's been bothering me for a few months.

Okay...I'm going to get back to my essay now. It's due in...a few hours, and I still want some sleep after I finish the last four pages of this bloody thing.

So I just got back from Winter War in Borealis, which was an absolute BLAST!!! I tell ya, there's nothing more satisfying than war. NOTHING I SAY! I mean the ride back home sucked - it's supposed to be a 9 hour drive, but turned out being...a lot more. The roads were crap, and we were going like 30 km/hour a lot of the way. It was a pure skating rink, and we passed a ton of accidents and chained semis that couldn't keep going.

No shit, there I was, storming across the field with my shield wall beside me. I get one kill, and then, out of the blue, something slams into my throat. As I fall, I'm looking around and thinking, "What the hell, there's no one there...wait...shiiiit I hate archers!" The last battle scenario was the best, tons of other, much better 'no shit there I was' stories, but alas, you'll have to ask me if you want to hear those.

And the revelry, the revelry....nothing like a bunch of drunk fighters, knights included, just doing what they do best.

So yeah...I guess I'm still in a bit of a post-event stupo--i mean, adrenaline rush.

Okay, so I found this list entitled "You know you're in the SCA when...", and I have to share some of my favourites (they're all quite true! which is the great part):

You know you're in the SCA when...
-you've brushed your teeth with beer, because it was easier to find than clean water
-you yell "Huzzah" at mundane events instead of cheering "normally"
-the axe you use to chop wood is one you've made yourself
-you slip and address a coworker as "milord" or "milady"
-people don't assume you're going in for surgery when you say "this weekend I'm going to get my knees fixed"
-you have to remind yourself not to call that tourist in the checkered golf pants "Sir" just because he's wearing a white belt
-you cry "Lay On!" when serving at raquetball (or tennis, or...)
-you have a credit card in the name of your persona

and

You Might be a Stickjock If...
-you can describe the tactics, strategy, weapons, armor and troops used in hundreds of medieval battles, but don't know why they were fought
-you pick up the trash bin lid and automatically snap it up to a defensive position

-[you're female and] "You're so aggressive!" is a compliment! (or in my case, it's "Gently! Hah! Saeth's not gentle!" and it's definately a compliment XD)

there were tons of others, and those are just some of my favourites.

And for those of you who've commissioned me for sketch portraits, they are in the makings, but since I've been busy with exams and war (and failing exams because of war...), I haven't gotten as many done as I'd hoped. On my off hours I'm working on them!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that my current projects and commissions are going to be put on hold for a little while.

The reason? I'm hosting a small fund-raiser for , who's dog has recently become very ill. Check out her journal for more info on that.

The scoop: For the nect month or so (or whenever I decide to stop) I will be offering cheap $10 portrait commissions. All money will go straight to .

Nothing elaborate or really realistic, just a quick (as in 5-10 hour) sketch portrait. As I hope to do as many of these as possible, I will not spend more than 10 hours per piece (unless I really like it...;D)

If you are interested, please pm me with a detailed description of a chara you'd like done, as well as any pictures you have (if any) of this character/person. I will also do actors/movie characters or portraits of family etc.

the UPDATE

A friend of mine has recently been in a serious snomobile accident, which has had me very shaken for the last couple days. He had been put into an induced coma right after the accident. His only broken joints are his wrist and cheekbone, but what had us worried was the extent of brain damage. Basically he didn't see a 12-foot dropoff in time...to sum it up, let's just say that his helmet, the best available, was completely broken in two. It saved his life.

At the moment he's still only semi-conscious, responsive though not talking yet. The brain scans haven't shown anything, and tonight I was told that it's looking hopeful; he should recover, though it will be a long healing process. There still may be some brain injury, but we won't find out for a while.

His family and mine are very close, so it feels like this has happened to a brother of mine. Needless to say I've been pretty shaken up these last few days. Also this morning another friends of the family passed away. When I get shaken like this my brain goes into a deer-in-headlights mode; for example, I didn't eat the day after I heard of the accident, and my mind didn't really want to focus on anything except worry. Where I'm going with this: I'm going to take a break from painting for the next day or so, unlesss my mood suddenly changes. I should be back to pumping sketches out before Thursday or Friday though.

I plan on doing a lot more practice with realism, and hopefully garnering some interest around the school and DA for commission…I’m your typical poor college student :(

My Graphire, which I just bought a couple months ago, is already going wonky on me, and will probably die soon. I’ve heard so many stories of tablets just randomly dying, so I’m hoping against hope that this one will last a while longer. I’ve also been drooling over the Cintiq, but that is FAR out of my financial reach! Costs more than my bloody laptop! And speaking of laptops…I’ve got this love-hate relationship going on with mine, knowing I’d die without it yet hating it’s wimpiness in terms of gaming and cging :s

Anyways…so hyped for school! So much better than working at crappy minimum wage jobs and working at campsites and dealing with grumpy old american tourists, and I enjoy learning things and getting away from that typical ‘ignorant kid’ stereotype. Which reminds me…I’ll be legal in two and a half months! Not that it’ll do that much good, as I’m allergic to most alcohol, but still…

I feel like I’m someone older stuck in the body of an 18-yr old. Pah. Though it *has* been almost two years since I graduated, although it feels like two weeks, as I’ve done like nothing this year but work and drudge along cynically.

Also a little heads up (like if anyone’s actually reading this! What a laugh…), once I get better at portraits, I’m going to be on the market for commissions, which would be cheap, of course, to start. But hopefully I’ll get a few before my Graphire dies on me completely, so I can get a new one, or maybe upgrade to the Intuos.



Oh, and I must share my favourite part of the poem I’m illustrating (it’s such a moving poem! Though you’ve probably heard it before):

I managed to find a relatively inexpensive 3-in-1 printer-scanner-copier that does adequately.

I hope to get some extra time in soon, to improve my style and technique – maybe in the distant future I’ll be good enough to sell commissions. The price of res has been raised to $600/month for next year, so I’m sweating about that…I really don’t want to have to live off campus without a car…

It’s times like this when I’m glad I stayed home an extra year to work. Even if that work is more than depressing….

Basically I’ve been looking all over the net for poetry contests and the like with cash prizes. Heh. My only problem there is that there’s usually a 20-line limit; I like to write epics and stories.

Any heads up about such contests would be much appreciated.

Funny how I always delay writing/drawing/anythingelse until the last minute at night when I should be getting to sleep so that I can have at least four hours of sleep before I have to get up for an early day at work where I will undoubtedly stress out and come home with my back knot flaming and in need of a massage and a large amount of tiger balm before I crash once more to repeat the cycle.

Ahem.

You know I’m tired wheeeen…..

Well, they do say that the mind is at it’s most creative at night. (I think they say that…) I think I’ve written all my decent poems and drawn most of my art at night. I find it a lot harder to fall asleep at night than I do during the day. Old habits do die hard.

I’m kicking myself for wasting money on Staedtler Mars Graphic 3000 Duo markers. I thought they might do something like the cool stuff I’ve seen done with Copics (and I’m not about to be able to afford them…*sigh*), but I was wrong. *cries* Maybe if I buy every imaginable colour in them I’ll be able to shade skin tone…but until then, they don’t really do much…

If anyone uses or knows someone who uses Staedtler markers, PLEASE please tell me, so I can see what they do etc etc…grrrr….

Meanwhile, I’m keeping a close eye on all my devWatches, and drooling over the absolutely amazing art they produce. Keep it coming, guys. I need the brain food. [link].imagination! *sob*
