I can't sleep. And it has nothing to do with insomnia.
That's the story of my life for the past few weeks. I feel like I'm rarely tired, and when I am I often would rather distract myself by watching TV and playing World of Warcraft, of course at the same time, since I can't seem to do anything BUT multitask. Sometimes I think that I am not even really living right now, but I then again what else would I be doing? Sleeping? Writing? Getting high? Partying? What? Really... there's no point but to do what you feel like doing in life. Yeah this sounds pretty hollow, guess that's the word, but so what? If you can't do what you feel like doing, when you want to, then are you living life to the fullest? Even if doing so means you are gluing yourself to a screen and consciously developing carpal tunnel? I seriously don't think that doing homework early, reading for class, being social (whatever the fuck that means, I play fucking computer games for god's sake) makes you any more alive than sitting at a keyboard talking to people you've never met about topics that, believe it or not, you actually like talking about. You fly airplanes and don't work every week? You have HOW MANY children and you play WoW? You actually like System of a Down too? You don't think they're too pretentious? Wow... and I mean WoW... life is weird. Yes so I am not really spending my time being productive, playing guitar, writing applications for all the jobs I will get rejected from by May in time for my graduation... so what else is there to do? Play video games and not sleep of course.

Wall of Text Crits you for 999999999

Win

So...

I'm here in Miami... editing my songs constantly and I gotta tell ya... drum programming is NOT easy. I constantly feel like I need to strip everything further down. Get simple. Sometimes I over complicate things. "This song DOES NOT need to have a galloping rhythm!" for example.

I am about to start a project with a guitarist and his drummer friend in Springfield, MA and I wonder how it'll turn out. I hope we can get some gigs and some good songs lined up so I can finally get a little more experience. That's what I need right now, some stage time. It'll help me understand how a crowd will react to certain kinds of music.

I also discovered that adapting previously written lyrics to music is HARD, especially when it's metal or some other alternative hard music. Very hard.

So anyway, just thought I'd let you all know what I was up to. Music mostly, so that's why you haven't seen any poems posted.

Much love.
I am not sure I like it or not, makes me look older for sure, but I can't decide whether or not I like that older look.
All major wars the US has participated in within the last fifty years have been in the interest of protecting so-called "American national interests". None of the countries we have fought have been a direct threat to the security of the United States.

The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is an aggressive nation. We need to recognize our failings, and reform our foreign policies, and make a serious change in the nature of our government. Elections do not make functioning democracies.

Korea - By North Korea invading South Korea they were risking World War Three, true, but us getting involved made the risk worse. Defending South Korea, yes we were, but not out of the goodness of our hearts. Defending the US, barely, that was a war of political paranoia stemming from fear of the Soviets and the Chinese, who wanted a war less than we did and were much less prepared. Nevertheless, three bloody years later, we ended on a stalemate. America was not threatened, just our perceived "interests" in protecting South Korea.

Vietnam - Not our war, should never have been our war, and many Americans and Vietnamese died for what was another war of political/ideological paranoia. The Vietnamese as a whole were supportive of uniting under Ho Chi Minh's socialist government, and we could not stomach the idea of another "red" country. Again, fears of the communists drove us to a war we lost for many reasons (McNamara, as you said, as well as the rest of the idiocy that was the Johnson administration)

Grenada - Reagan flexing his muscles to protect about a few hundred students against Cuban-backed guerrillas, hardly a war really.

Central America - So training right-wing death squads to overthrow democratically-elected psuedo-socialist governments is protecting America? Hardly, more like protecting America's financial interests with the United Fruit Company and resulting in massive loss of life.

With regards to militaries in general, yes many are there to protect their country. Ours does that, but none of these wars involved protecting ourselves, they were to protect our financial and political "interests". No country we have gone to war with in the past fifty years has been a threat to our existence as a country.

We are the Rome of today, and that should scare everyone.

Hey everyone I'm Nick and I'm interested in finding a hard rock/metal band to jam/work with in the Five College/Pioneer Valley area around Amherst, Hadley, and Northampton. I can come to practices and gigs about 2-4 times a week, mostly in the late afternoons and nights. I also have a car that I can use to travel.

I primarily play rhythm guitar and compose (mostly) experimental hard rock and metal music. I have some experience in lead techniques and can pull off some mean harmonics and tremolo picking with my unique guitar style. I am a lyricist and poet as well, with a book of poetry in the works.
[link]

I can play bass, and sing either backup or lead reasonably well. I have some experience growling for those of you death metal and metalcore types.

I am influenced by System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath, and Slayer, as well as many many other great bands.

I've been playing for almost two years, but have progressed fast and am looking for a band with an edge that emphasizes an awesome live show with quality music and lyrics. I want more than just a band, I'd like to find a group of people who are honest and friendly, and are good, fun people.

I'm going from Istanbul to Basel, to Rome, to London, to Amsterdam, and then home!

It's gonna take a few days, but I'll get to travel a bit and see Europe before I get back to shitty Florida. I can't stand the heat... it's gonna suck. But besides that, life is good and although there are problems here at the host family's house, I'm glad to be practically done with school. I can't wait to use the summer to get better at guitar and write more. It's gonna rock.

Yep, it happened. It was all going so well for her too. She went from being an alcoholic drug-user with no education in the 1990s, to going sober (not easily) and finally going to school for nursing. She was finally able to start a real-life, was getting good grades (she will graduate in my class, 2008), and was finally feeling good about life.

Then the system fucked her. Hard. She can't afford her medications, so the government paperwork delays payments and she suffers. She can't go to school, but thankfully her loans went through (with heavy interest of course). She gets fired for taking sickdays after working double-digit hours most of the week and going to school the rest of the time. She made 3 dollars an hour (3 below the MINIMUM WAGE) on top of tips (she's a waitress).
AND THEY FIRED HER.

What ends up happening by pursuing selfish goals is that others suffer for your profit. Workers spend most of their life working for others to make money, while they make barely enough to live comfortably, and many don't even make that much. When profit is the primary goal of production, then it will always be like this. The individual who exploits is the individual who succeeds at becoming wealthy. Some will benefit from the wealth, but most won't.

If someone has more money than you, he has power over you. It's that simple. Money is power in modern capitalist-countries. If he has more, he can buy your labor from you, he can apply to the state for privileges you may not get, he can make his firm be considered a legal person, and buy political power. When he has that much power over you, and consistently applies this power for his own personal gain, that IS oppression.

Goods and services will be provided by communes and cooperatives, as well as individual artisans and workers who will provide their work for the common good, in return for access to everyone else's labor. No one person will control any other person's labor, and no state will exist to protect the person who wishes to have his power increased at the expense of others. All this must be maintained by a direct-democracy system where every single person is involved in the daily life of the society and works for the community's benefit.

By freeing the worker, the worker can spend more time at home, with family, working with the community, taking hobbies, and doing much more than he can in modern society.

Of course, theory is theory. But that's the idea.

I think what everyone in this country needs to understand, is that as long as we have the two-party system no major changes will happen. Both parties are controlled by the same things: money, and power.

Lobbyists and their CEO employers run government, as well as the various interest groups that garner votes for their favored party. It's all about currying favor with votes, which equal donations, which equal favorable laws for business interests, which placate the otherwise unaware voters, which creates money for those in power. The politicians may individual care about how well-off or happy some people are, but in the end it's the cash and the votes that control them, despite some of the more morally-acceptable candidates like Obama and others. The Democrats have sold out just as much as the Republicans, but at least they aren't nearly as idiotic as a group... at least not as catastrophically so in my opinion.

It's not about Republicans being power-hungry warmonging religious-literalists, or Democrats being weak on national security *rolls eyes* or being far left socially, it's about money and power. If you don't make six or seven or *gasp* eight or nine digits in your paychecks every year, you really can't influence the big two parties. You're a vote, a pawn, a piece in their game. Our only chance to affect real change is from the ground up, third parties and non-parties, organizations and ngos, activism and speaking out. We can't simply vote every two (four... eight... never) years and expect anything to change.

It's time we move on.

To do something. I'm bored. Life in Turkey is fine, but I've been sitting in this house, out of school, without friends (they all went back to the states) for two months. A girl I really like came over and spent a great weekend with me, but now it seems like nothing is going to come of it. We've been good friends forever, but she acts like nothing happened. That blows.

So what to do? Write music on GP5, make a myspace, practice guitar, and whine about it to people I want to read this if they feel like it. I posted some of my songs online for critique, the first one got good reviews, and the second got blasted. I can't change the song without totally messing with it, and I don't want to redo it now. I write my music for me, not for anyone else. It's still a real bummer when something you put so much effort into gets slammed. I fucking hate other guitarists so much. I take it all with a grain of salt, but when it's universal and totally negative, it's hard. It's part of being a musician, or a performer, or any kind of artist, writer, and so on.

I don't care that it makes me look like a whiner or like I'm vulnerable, fuck it right? Normally I'm pretty cool headed, things don't bother me, but whatever. I don't need to pretend for anyone. If you know me, then all this whining won't matter to you, and if it does, then you're as shallow as I am, or everyone else. Humanity is surprisingly similar everywhere in the world.

Tis life. I miss home, I miss family, I miss American food, I miss friends, I miss Amherst, I DON'T miss Miami, I miss Lorena and am afraid to tell her that I fell for her last weekend, and I miss being with people that actually care about me. The few people I suspect that do, I can barely count on one hand. So if you were tagged in this note (if you're on Facebook), consider yourself a friend of mine.

Really.

/end whining

Freedom of Speech vs National Security and Reasons why Turks Seem so Defensive...

The problem as I see it, is that Turks feel like Europeans are out to get them. If you pay attention to the EU-Turkey talks, Cyprus, the genocide allegations, Turks may have a point. It's for these reasons they are so stubborn about giving up some of their nationalist tendencies. They still feel under-attack, culturally and politically, by the Europeans.

As for freedom of speech, we know the French parliament passed a law making it ILLEGAL to deny the Armenian Genocide. This is just as bad as Turkey's law, and I'm surprised no one has talked about it.

Yes, you may believe things like the Armenian Genocide happened, and that's fine, or you may deny it, fine, but neither side should silence the other. It's not political, it's historical, and everyone needs to be able to discuss it. It's got nothing to do with national security, despite what some people seem to believe.

If any of you know how to link other people's work on a journal (cough cough, Lostinthewhirlwind) then please let me know so I can post some of my favorite artists's work here in my journal.
I'm going to post my favorites of my own, as well as those of all the people who watch my page, as a show of gratitude.

Ozzfest kicked ass. I'd post a whole review if I could... but my head hurts. Here's one about System, since that's why I came.

----------
I was at the Hartford show last night, and last afternoon, and last morning... etc...

The whole show was pretty damn awesome. Nothing like moshing and circle pits and all that during BLS.

Sex drugs and rock and roll ftw!

I'll cut to System now... since I could go on forever...

The first two songs were a bit off vocally... it didn't feel right (I couldn't stand Serj and Daron's vocals at first... WAY too high-pitched, but it got better). They opened with the Soldier Side Intro, which was ok but considering it was Ozzfest, Suite-Pee would've been a better opener. They kept switching from fast to slow and some people got up and left. Too bad really, because half-way through it got awesome.

They played nearly all the big ones: Aerials, Chop Suey, Toxicity, Sugar... and their finale was insane. The crowd was on its feet and the banging started. True... no pit, but a lot of people were going wild.

My grading -

Ozzfest  = A
SYSTEM = A- (for awkward intro, strange setlist, but still awesomely rocking ending)
Disturbed= A
BLS      = A+

Other first stage bands = B (sitting down during a day-time playing of Dragonforce and Lacuna Coil was sad... they should've played at night... not like Hatebreed *gags*)

Other second stage bands= B+ (maybe all the moshing made me like it more?)

Israelis should not have to live in fear of violence.

So my opinion =

The Palestinians do not have tanks, airplanes, nukes, or the support of the USA. So it's no surprise they resort to assymetrical warfare.

Are they right to do so? Yes, if they feel that is the only real solution to the problem and the stakes are high enough.
Does it make it right to kill innocent people for politics? No.

I was late rather often the first month or so of my employment, I got put on probation, which says if I'm late ONCE more I'm fired.

So... almost two months later, not one day of tardiness... and I press the wrong button on my cellphone that instead of snoozing, turns off the alarm.

I'm late for work, my supervisor calls me in, tells me there's "nothing" she can do... which is total bullshit since she only wants to follow the rules rather than understand the full situation...

She says I've got till Tuesday when the boss comes in to work. That day I'll have to explain my situation, and not get fired somehow.

Americans are too caught up in a consumer society where happiness is bought by material gain. As long as the economy is good enough to allow the middle class to continue to buy things to entertain themselves, there will be no revolution of any kind.
But again, it's America so I'm almost more afraid of post-revolutionary America than today's country... as superficial and retarded as it is.
I've spent 4 hours singing and listening to music instead of doing homework... and I still kinda sorta got into the London School of Economics General Course... I don't deserve it really.
