ANYWAY! Caeli news! (get comfy, you'll be here for a while)
My little girl celebrated her fourth birthday on July first, and is now an official horsey adult.(Yay!) PLUS This past Saturday held a (SUPER) major milestone for the two of us and I couldn't be more proud. I managed to weasel the day off and join four other boarders to do our very first trail ride. She didn't want to get in the trailer, and when we GOT to the county park she was acting like a jitterbug (understandably!), but she calmed quickly even in the unfamiliar surroundings.

My girl braved wooden bridges, horse-eating deer, flapping tarps, a legion of goats, roaring motorcycles, and rabid children with scooters. And all without the drama and spookiness I honestly expected out of her. We even opened two cattle gates . . . well, she opened the second one on her own. Do I get extra points for that?

The ride itself was amazing, and I'm sure I was grinning like an idiot for most of it. Walk, trot, canter, uphill, downhill . . . it was a blast. On one of the longest straightaways I let her stretch out to a full gallop. She listened perfectly when I asked her to slow, and then stop. The group teased me playfully as I had the only horse that wasn't in the vicinity of 16hh (or larger) and everyone else towered over us. But we kept pace and never fell behind.

However after the first time we cantered as a group Caeli got it into her head that she and Rohan (a Shire) were competing. It was hilarious! Amazing ride. I'm looking forward to doing it again!

We had a good laugh about it afterwards. My friend turned just in time to see me kiss the dirt, and she said Caeli was looking down at me like "What the Hell are you doing down there Mom?" Thankfully nothing (mainly ME) was seriously damaged, and I learned a few things in the process. I just wish I didn't have my wallet in my back pocket . . . I now have a lovely black bruise about the size of my ipod nano. And I don't bruise.

Ah well, I was overdue for a spill.

On the morning of July 30, 2007 I received a call regarding Caeli. She had tried to go through a twisted wire fence and would let no one near her. She had peeled back a section of her nose and had three good slashes on her hind leg along with various other welts and cuts. She got off lucky with 11 stitches and a bandaged leg. She's all better now with just a couple of scars to show for it.

Why start with this? Because here begins the chain reaction. After they made me wait two and a half hours before I could go to my horse (the day of the injury) I soon quit my job at Quizno's and began spending my days at the ranch. The owners hired me under the table for a while, so for three months I was able to spend every day with Caeli and began working with her more as she recovered.

With my friend Chris watching my back, I began the serious work with Caeli. Small things at first. Coming to a whistle, waiting for her food, saddling, and then worked her up to the bigger things like bearing weight. Next thing I knew, I was on her back for the first time, with nothing but a saddle, a halter and a lead rope. I've been going slow but she learns things at a startling pace. She walks, turns, stops, backs up, and this was only on day FOUR.

I have had no professional help, and those who SHOULD have been helping me said that I couldn't do it alone, if at all. That I didn't know how. Well, true, I don't know much about starting horses in general. But what I DO know is Caeli, and her reactions to . . . . well, everything. So we are learning together, and it is working for us.

So adding this, PLUS a brand new full-time position at Petsmart, and you get one VERY proud Sharys. How's THAT for doing the impossible?

These past two weeks have been CRAZY!! My good friend Jan severely hurt her leg two weeks ago, so me and two others have been trying to make it up to the barn every day to take care of the horses. Poor Caeli hasn't been out as much as I'd like, but sadly it can't be helped. Due to a recent mishandling, only two people are alloud to take Caeli out of her stall, so sadly she misses out on play time. I'm going to the DMV next week to take my written test and (hopefully) get get my license ASAP. I really need to be mobile right now . . . .

On a happier note: I GOT TO WORK CATTLE ON SATURDAY!!! It was a first for me, but it was SO much fun! It was odd, 'cause I was the only one on horseback. Everyone else was on foot, carrying rakes and sticks . . . like I said; odd. It was a real treat for Moonshadow, the heard kept breaking away from us so we had to bolt over the next hill to cut them off. As an 18 year old arabian, Shadow knew what to do and let me know when I was doing it wrong! I can't wait to do it again!

In other news, there are three horses that me and ~song-of-the-dragons are currently working with together. The first one is Comache, an older mare with a lotta go and a pet chicken that sleeps in her feeder. The second is Sirocco (sher-ah-ko), a nine-year old Arab gelding with a little work but a lot of potential. And finally Patches, a fox trotter (supposedly) who moves like a fat four-legged Chocobo.

Between them and the other horses on the weekend I think I'm gonna get whipped into shape well before Caeli's B-Day in July.

It was so sweet that she let me flop on her, and the two times she went to lay flat out, she would remember that I was behind her and would sit up again. We had lots of bonding time yesterday.

Ah, but then today struck with a vengeance. First off, one of the other horses hurt himself in his stall, leaving a small but very bloody gash on his face. Being the first to notice, I called the barn manager and his owner and ended up cleaning him up myself. That's the second time I've had to wash that horse's wounds. He's so accident prone . . . .

And THEN my friend Shanti and I decided to take Caeli for a short walk along the trail. She was doing perfectly fine until we reached the dog park. Lots of people, lots of big barking dogs, and big loud trucks. Long story short, Caeli was having a meltdown, and she completely lost it during my one moment of inattention. She knocked me down with her shoulder and went clear over me. To her credit she made it a point not to step on me, but she did bang her knee into my shoulder. Somehow I was still holding her lead rope, and managed to get her back under control really quickly.

I'm okay, Caeli's okay, but DAMN was that scary.

We were going down a long hill when I felt off andf looked down . . . only to realize I was riding (quite literally) on Lio's neck! Somewhere along the way the thin nylon cinch had come completely undone, resulting in my awkward situation.
But Lio was perfectly calm about the whole thing, and so I got off and we re-saddled him and rigged the cinch to prevent a repeat. The rest of the ride went wonderfully. I gave poor Lio extra treats for being such a good boy about the whole thing, not many horses would have reacted so calmly . . .

In other news:
This was one crazy weekend! On Saturday I went on a group trail ride on a horse I had never ridden off the ranch before. I rode Chico (the barn manager's mustang, and notorious slowpoke) and was happy that he was more than willing to gallop with me. Trust me when I say that this is a miracle.

On Sunday I had convinced myself that I was insane. I ditched work to go job hunting all over town, and ended up taking the light rail to see my boyfriend at the end of the day. Then that evening we discovered that it's official: after 7 years I have my own room! YES!!

On a completely different subject: Donna's leaving. As in out-of-the-state leaving. So what does that mean for me? I am now a paid employee of Jan's Riding School! Score!

Plus I still have that weekend job at Coyote Ranch. Horses and ponies all around.

When I finally decided to show some backbone, I was worried sick. Then later I found that others who witnessed my confrontation (of sorts) were proud with what I had to say . . . and do.

I had a cheering section without realizing it, and it made me feel like I did the right thing. And as today progressed there were several small things were done for me.
