Well, *ShatteredVerse Enthusiasts, it's been a while. Far too long, I'm afraid. For reasons beyond our control, *ShatteredVerse has not been as active in recent months. We miss the fun times and the wonderful people we've been associated with in the past, and hope we can make up for lost time.

Our New Year's Resolution to you, our Members and Friends, is to rebuild the club, and regain our former pizzazz. We hope you will be patient with us as we proceed to reactivate chat and club activities, such as Collaborations (formal and spontaneous), Competitions, PotW, PotM, and other projects.

This unforeseen six month hiatus, we believe, has yielded some much needed regrouping time, and hopefully will allow us a fresh start.

Much love to all of you, and we wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Interest in the chatroom is high in the evenings but still lacking during the day, if you are interested in a possible staff position there please send me a note and include staff or chatroom in the subject line. Please let me know what you would be interested in helping with.

We have one very lonely entry for the summer competition. In order to update the competition journal I would like to see more entries please. Same thing with the carry-on collab. We have only a bit added, if you are interested in contributing please go check it out.

A belated congratulations is in order for =dreamersrapture, ~dieinfaith, and ~SpiritoCustode for the Poetry Month Competition. All the entries that were submitted can now of course be posted to your page if you haven't done so already. Due to the fact we missed the last collaboration, by popular demand: The next room collaboration will be held in ShatteredVerseChat Sunday 2nd July at 4pm CST. To get your local time just click here and select your location.

We often see the beauty of the facade; the attractive looks, the dazzling smile, the perfect figure. Enamoured by this illusion we are happy and content. But what does the mirror see that we don't? What would it really show if only we looked? What do others truly see?

Join us as we peer into this image and view the ugliness within. During this Collab we are going to try something a little different, so come and help expose and examine The Beast In The Beauty.

This month, and next, were trying something different again! For our May/June carry-on we will incorporate a simple format of iambic pentameter (5 metric feet per line) and six-line stanzas. There is no rhyme scheme. We ask that you affix at least 2 lines of your own, and no more than 4 in one turn. Dont worry about submitting the odd 3 lines, if it comes to your first line being line six, finish off the stanza and create the first line of the next! If you choose to participate again, please allow one or more collaborators to add their lines. Then feel free to submit again!

Iambic pentameter is used widely throughout poetry. Our verses do not have to be Shakespearean, however. All we are looking for in this...

Please, I would like everybody to look at SV's new chat rules. They are important and if you would like to partake in chat activities it is imperative you know them.A few things have recently changed so it can't hurt to refresh your memories.

Haiku Competition
The haiku competition has finally ended you can now view all of the submissions in the competition journal. We had quite a few submissions and I am pleased to see so much talent involved with SV. If you have a moment please check out the lovely submissions and also our next competition and rules.

Website
We have recently undertaken a big project to revamp the SV website. There is all kinds of nifty new features and it's really starting to take shape. Take a moment and check it out and leave us some comments in the guestbook. Our newest addition will be The Wall of Shame.. check it out regularly as we continually update.

I would like to take a moment to say how pleased I am with SV's new look. The new changes to the journals and staff seem to be working really well. I'd also like to take a moment to thank all our members for bearing with us through all of this. The feedback we have received from all of you has been excellent and is much appreciated. The chat room has been thriving as well, more members are stopping in and participating in our activities. A big thanks to you all, without you all this wouldn't be possible.

COMPETITION RULES:

1. The competition will run from the 15th of the month to the 7th of the following month.
2. Entries will be posted for voting from the 7th of the month to the 14th of the month.
3. These competitions and voting are only open to ShatteredVerse members.
4. Submissions must be new works and not posted on your page until after the next competition begins. All entries must remain annonymous.
5. To submit your entry note us the poem and your name, with Competition as the subject.
6. Once voting commences each member gets one vote to cast for their choice of winner. Please note us with your vote, with Vote as the subject.
7. Winners will be announced when the next competition is announced.

Sorry it was a little delayed but here are the results to the April Comp. The theme for April's competition will be smiling. Throughout our lives, we all smile for various reasons with varying levels of truth behind our expressions. The smile of a prom queen, the smile of a widow, an infant smiling in it's mother's arms for the first time, or even the smile of a killer: all of these are snapshots into the human existence and allow insight into a person's psyche.

A simply told tale about the rush of new love and the illusions created by unrealistic expectations, followed by the onset of reality, and the ending of the relationship. It is about going on with life, but with the regrets we carry with us. The poem progresses smoothly through these stages, having just a touch of melancholy. No angst in this piece, merely a journey through the doomed relationship.

Although there is a distinct lack of capitalisation and a slight overuse of the personal pronoun "I" this poem is well worth a read for the subtle yet vivid imagery, and the simply related story that is shown more than told.

Congratulations again ~cynicallaughter on a beautifully written poem.

XXIV - The

Raven

Featured Poet

=Lavos12 is a 14 year old poet from Michigan. Although often using a minimal amount of imagery he can also be quite complex, and definitely ahead of his years. Definitely a poet to keep an eye on for the future as his life experience and style develop.

His work, XXIV - The Raven was selected for its flow and imagery. Although he states he hadn't read Poe at the time of writing this piece it is indeed very reminiscent of Poe's The Raven. Lavos builds his own work and reproduces the sense of impending doom the same way, although his imagery is somewhat more complex than Poe's.

This piece is well worth a read, and is quite well constructed and well written. It captures the reader and brings them along like all good works should. Enjoy.

Important!
Come on people we need more haikus from you!! Thanks to those of you that have submitted already. It was pointed out to me that our description or explanation of a haiku was "inaccurate" so I am giving you the gallery description of a haiku: A haiku is a single crystallised instant in nature. It is a poem of simplicity, stillness and brevity, and a form of poetry mindful of the connotations implicit in the multitudes of natural phenomena, and the seasons. Originally haiku were written on a single line in sections of five, seven and five Japanese sound-symbols - whether the modern writer chooses to use the '5-7-5' stipulation or not is up to him or her. What counts most is content: vividness and minimalism of observation, rather than strictness of form. We would really appreciate if you would stick to the 5-7-5 pattern, please. It makes a bit more of a challenge then. Thank you for your time and hope to see more of your work.

Like I said before, there will be some changes to SV in the new year. Some of these include regular competitions and more things to get you all involved in SV. Please stay tuned for more updates as we continually strive to better ourselves.

Haiku's
The Chinese New Year is upon us and we thought in order to celebrate we would ask you to submit some Haiku's. Here is a short explanation of a haiku: A Japanese poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Haiku often reflect on some aspect of nature. So if you are up to this festive challenge please take a moment to submit it to us via note and we will feature it in the month of February. All submissions are due in by February 1st and we will make one big deviation for you all to enjoy. You are encouraged to submit your haiku's to your page as well, this is a more informal competition just for fun.

Updates!
We are regularly going to be featuring a member as poet of the week be sure to read the poem and leave some feedback for the artist. This helps all of us to become better writers and gives us some experience in critiquing. Our poet of the month will begin in February, we are reworking the way a PotM is featured so please be patient. If you feel you have stumbled upon a really excellent poem or an artist that you feel needs to be featured please send us a note and it will be forwarded on to the staff that arranges those things. And as always if you feel the need to we are always open to suggestions, comments, feedback, questions, etc... Hope everybody had a wonderful holiday season! More updates coming soon!

Mood: community minded

After our lovely staff meeting yesterday, I wanted to inform you all about some of the changes that are going to be taking place over the next month or so. I want to thank all the staff members and admin who felt that it was important enough to be there.

First off, there have been some changes to the rank in the chat room. I moved alot of names around. This was to get rid of the congestion that seemed to occur. All members are now placed in the ShatteredWriters section. We now have a founders privclass, an admin privclass, and a staff privclass. This was not meant as a slight to anyone just needed some revamping in the chat room.

Moving on... In January (after all the holidays) we are going to start incorporating a more up to date Poet of the Week and Poet of the Month, in our meeting yesterday we created groups of ppl to decide these things. These will be decided every Monday for the PoTW and every 1st of the month for PoTM. If you have a suggestion please note SV and it will be forwarded on to the person that is in charge of that function. Another feature we would like to add is a regular Q&A. In the past they have been all different days of the week and at different times, in order to make it more reliable for you we decided that we would host a Q&A every last Wednesday of the month. Times are still being worked out and we will have transcripts of the Q&A for those of you who are not able to show. Again, if you have suggestions on who you would like to grill please don't hesitate to send us a note with your suggestion. We also would like to incorporate more contests and events for our members. We will be having some form of an event or another at least once a month. Suggestions are welcome, comment in the journal or drop us a note. There will also be different events held in the chat room, some formal.. some informal.

We really need more submissions for the Autumn Contest. I would also enjoy it if another one of our members came up with a preview pic for the end deviation. If you are interested please note this account or note =lostko. Remember! Your contest entries MUST be noted to *ShatteredVerse and CANNOT be submitted to your page before the contest ends. As I have said before, this makes it less of a popularity contest. Still reviewing the prizes for the winners, if you have any ideas on prizes let us know. Subs are getting expensive and with Christmas and other things coming up it may not be an option so anything else you may think is worthwhile is much appreciated.

We would also like to host another Q&A but need to suggestions for our guest. Ok! We have decided that another competition would be good. The theme will be Autumn, anything having to do with Autumn, fall, etc. You can have any style to your writing. I must ask again that you don't submit it to your page until after the comp and that you submit it to us here at SV via note. This way we aren't running a popularity contest and the best poem truly wins. If you have any further questions please stop in chat and visit us or send us a note. We will be more than willing to answer any questions you might have. We would like all entries in by November 15th. Prizes are still being worked out at the moment but will be posted as soon as something is figured out. NEWS YOU CAN USE!
Our very own ShatteredFloydian, , is having a Hallowe'en contest! The prizes are awesome, subs galore! This is not limited to only poetry, either--any form of art is acceptable! For rules, deadlines, and the like, check this [link] , and good luck to all! (I mean that, by the way--I've got two ideas in mind already!! )

We are desperately in need of members to be in the chat room at all times. If you can spare some time either in the morning. afternoon, or evening and would like to possibly be made staff let us know. Also when you are in the chat room please don't use it as an idling room, greet all our members and guests as they come in. I have found that even when I arrive it takes some of you about 5 mins to greet me. I know I am admin but I wonder how many potential members we lose during the course of week because no one was either there or no one spoke when they came in. Thank you.

Now we need some ideas for a competition and the like.. Please feel free to note us or comment in the journal or on the page. We need something new to do, guys and without you the club is essentially nothing!! Please offer some feedback and keep us going. Also I wanted some ideas on who the next person should be for the Q&A, if you know of anybody that you think would be interested in a Q&A or jsut someone you are ultimately curious about please please tell us about it!! I would just like to say I was very pleased with the turn out for ~life-and-death's Q&A, members and non-members alike showed up to partake in the questioning. It lasted roughly around 4 and a half hours!! Thank you again ~life-and-death Unfortunately we did not transcipt the Q&A. Hopefully with our next Q&A we will remember to do that, lol .

Make sure you vote on the topic for our upcoming contest if you haven't already. We want all your voices heard!! So far it looks as though dreams is winning, so if you want another topic get in here and vote!!! You only have until Friday!! I should have put up a poll but totally blanked out when I was updating. Thanks =AellaWind for pointing that out to me. Next time that is definitely what we will do.

Submissions & Voting
I just wanted to give a run through of how submissions work here. I know each club has their own way of submitting, I would like to have everyone who is participating (after we of course finish voting on a topic idea) to submit their poems to ShatteredVerse via note. This poem has to be new and not already on your page. This I feel will cut down on favoritism and bias. In essence we can truly choose the best poem without being swayed by a name. You will not be able to post the poem on your page until after the contest is over, again to cut down on favoritism. ShatteredVerse will then submit all the poems as one deviation, each poem will be numbered, which we will all vote on the number we feel is best. I do not discourage working together on these poems as sometimes the best pieces come from bouncing ideas off of one another. I truly want the best of all of us to come out. Please keep in mind these guidelines before submitting.

Come on people, we could really use some contest ideas!!! Anything we are open to absolutely anything!!! Just leave us a comment or if you are feeling bashful and want your identity to be kept secret, drop us a note.

SUBMISSIONS
Ok we have gotten a few questions about submissions. Our thoughts on this is that the identity of the poet should be kept secret until after the contest, so therefore we felt it was best to have our members submit their pieces to us in a note and not submit them on their pages while the contest is going on. Once we set a date for all the submissions to be in we will create a deviation with all the poems on it numbered. You will then vote on the numbers, this way there is less chance of favoritism. After voting is through you will then be able to put them on your page. We hope this works for all of you. If the rules change we will let you know.

For our members:
Upon further consideration, I have decided that maybe it's not a good idea for all of us to watch all members, the load can be extreme as we grow as a club, I do strongly advise that you browse members galleries from time to time to comment and critique on their writing styles, and to help better each other as writers. Sorry for the confusion

IDEAS AND COMMENTS
I am very pleased to announce that we; as of the writing of this journal; have 27 members!!!! How exciting and I urge all of you to drop us notes and comments with whatever ideas you have. I know this probably sounds redundant but we are only as a good a club as you, the members, make us.

UPDATES
I noticed that there has been much confusion as to time zones with the upcoming "poetic lecture". I am trying my best to figure out everybodies time zones. The lecture will be held at 4pm EST, 3pm CST, 2pm MST, 1pm PST and as for our UK watchers I am not too sure on your time zones but I know ~SorrowBurn and ~infernal-raynata are 6 hrs ahead of me so that would make the lecture 9pm their time. If you have any questions, comments, or complaints please don't hesitate to drop us a note. Thanks for your patience as we attempt to bring things together.

I am pleased to see the interest in this club, it's so exciting!! I would also like to take a moment to thank those of you for your ideas in the previous journal. Please do not hesitate to drop us a comment in future journals with any ideas you may have. We are open to any and all suggestions you might have .

UPDATES
On another note we are pleased to announce our first workshop. Date: August 2nd, 2005(which by the way is my 26th birthday ) Time: 1pm PST (if you have issues with time zones drop us a note and we will help figure it out for you) It will be held in the ShatteredWorkshop chat room which you can find here --> ShatteredWorkshopChat the regular chatroom will be open for those members who do not want to participate in the workshop. New Poetry Club

Ok, this is , writing the first journal for the new club. , and I decided to start this club specifically geared towards getting constructive critisism going on people's poetry. Are you tired of getting, "Wow, I loved this!" without any explanation of why they loved it? Then this is your club! We're still trying to work out the details of how this is going to work, but be patient...we'll update soon and let you know!! In the meantime, give us a watch...
