They are standard trading-card-sized sketches done in ink and greyscale markers, any character you would like! Here's an example of what the sketch cards look like:

Here's the deal! For your first sketch card, it's only $3. Three dollars! That's nothing! Everyone has three dollars, right? That's including shipping and everything, it's totally sweet.

But even better! After the first card, it's only $1 for every additional card!

So you could get 2 cards for $4, 3 for $5, etc etc.

The tricky part is, I still don't have my PayPal fixed, so it's got to be check, money order, or snail-mail cash. I'll take any of those three, though, so no worries!

EDIT: Apparently, you can also send money through Western Union online. All you need is a credit card.

If you want a one-of-a-kind personalized sketch card drawn and signed by yours truly, just drop me an email or a devNote.

Cheers, y'all!

Links and Stuff

Important Links
Kastle Comics
Atlanta Comic Creators
Post Secret
Engadget

Webcomics I Read
Count Your Sheep
Devil's Panties
Dominic Deegan
Girls With Slingshots
Looking for Group
Misfile
Red String
Wasted Talent

Stuff by my Favorite People

   <a href="http://niteshadepromise.deviantart.com/art...

My mom bought me a plane ticket so I could go to Birmingham and be at Kingdom Comics for the big event, which was absolutely awesome of her. This would have been my first time doing 24HCD away from Kingdom, and I was so glad I could go back for that.

Right when I got into Birmingham Thursday night, Scott Stantis (of Prickly City fame) put me straight to work. He had a few deadlines he was rushing into, what with just being named head editorial cartoonist of the Chicago Tribune and all (omgzors woot woot), so he had me color one of his cartoons for him while he finished up another one.

Then I wasted Friday doing a whole lot of absolutely nothing! Yay!

Saturday heralded the beginning of 24 Hour Comic Day. Only about 8 people showed up this year, which was kind of a bummer, but they were like 8 of my favorite people (except for Robbie who didn't show up! Rar!). ~ashe83 , ~niteshadepromise, and ~fason showed up. Deon was there, and I know he has a dA account, but I can't remember for the life of me what it is! Sorry, Deon!

Technically, I was the only one at Kingdom to officially finish. Fason did 24 pages, but as you can see if you check out his gallery, they weren't really comic pages. He did more like a picture book of silly monsters, which was totally cute. The "Doyle" monster was my idea.

Everyone else either finished their story in less than 24 pages or left before they finished. So even thought the 24HCD guys aren't announcing winners or anything, I totally won at Kingdom Comics

And on that note, don't forget to check out my 24 Hour Comic. Just hit the Download button on the left and unzip it to read the comic.

Links and Stuff

Important Links
Kastle Comics
Atlanta Comic Creators
Post Secret
Engadget

Webcomics I Read
Count Your Sheep
Devil's Panties
Dominic Deegan
Girls With Slingshots
Looking for Group
Misfile
Red String
Wasted Talent

Stuff by my Favorite People

<spa...

One more time, folks. 24 Hour Comic Day is THIS WEEKEND. If you do the challenge, whether you finish or not, at a local event or not, if you email me a link to your comic, you'll get an exclusive(!!) Kastle Comics wallpaper drawn by yours truly!

If you're going to be in the area, drop by Kingdom Comics and see me! I'll be there for 24 hours!

In Other News...

Commissions are back open again. I still haven't found a job, so I have no money and a lot of free time on my hands. So feel free to hop on over to this journal entry for pricing and rules and all that jazz. Prices are a little different from last time, I had lowered my prices ridiculously earlier because I was desperate. I'm less desperate now, so prices are back up to normal.

Good luck to everyone who decides to take on 24 Hour Comic Day this weekend!

Links and Stuff

Important Links
Kastle Comics
Atlanta Comic Creators
Post Secret
Engadget

Webcomics I Read
Count Your Sheep
Devil's Panties
Dominic Deegan
Girls With Slingshots
Looking for Group
Misfile
Red String
Wasted Talent

Stuff by my Favorite People

     <a href="http://StitchedUpRabbit...

Just another reminder to you guys that 24 Hour Comic Day is the first weekend in October! That's coming up fast! I highly encourage anyone and everyone to participate in this challenge, even if there isn't a location near you hosting it. Just get some friends together and give it a shot. Make a party of it. Watch movies and eat pizza and have a jolly good time.

In fact, I am SO encouraging people to do this that I'm making you a deal. If you compete in 24-Hour Comic Day this year, upload your comic online somewhere and send me a link to it, and I will send you an exclusive(!!) Kastle Comics wallpaper! Hooray!

Well, I think it's exciting.

In Other News...

You know me. I don't generally ask for stuff and stuff. But webcomic artist Adrian Ramos of Count Your Sheep fame needs a hand and wants people to vote for his t-shirt design on Zuda.com. So if you have a heart for a fellow artist in need, head on over there, log in, and vote for him. So the secret announcement is now being announced!

Kastle Comics is back!

That's right! After almost a year of nothingness, I'm finally getting back to drawing my Kastle Comics webcomic! I really liked drawing it before, it was a lot of fun and a great way to make sure I drew something every day even if I was busy, and so I'm doing it again!

I don't work at the comic book store anymore, so it won't be about my times working there, it'll just be about my everyday life and the funny things that go down. I'm hoping it'll be just as funny, and so far I've been getting a good response from the people I've showed it to. So check it out!

In Other News...

Don't forget about 24 Hour Comic Day coming up soon!

And don't forget to come see me if you're going to AnimeFest in McKinney, TX! She's getting me a plane ticket to Birmingham so I can go to Kingdom Comics for 24 Hour Comic Day this year! That way I don't have to drive or buy my own tickets hooray!

It's still a little ways off, but don't forget, people! 24 Hour Comic Day is the first weekend in October this year, Saturday the 3rd through Sunday the 4th. Check online now for places hosting the event near you. If no one is hosting the event, try getting some friends together or asking your local comic book store, college Art instructors, or maybe even a library, book store, or art supply store, if they would be willing to host the event. If not, you can have a big shebang at your very own house and do it from home!

For those of you new to the concept, 24 Hour Comic Day is a weekend during which artist all over the world attempt to draw a complete 24-page comic book in 24 hours or less. It was started by Scott McCloud several years ago, and has expanded into a huge worldwide phenomenon. They don't publish the winners anymore, but the challenge itself is always fun and rewarding. I've done it every year for the past four years now I think.

Check out the website for more details and hosting locations near you!

In Other News...

I got to register for classes today. We spent the morning learning the school's songs and marches and the stupid Eagle claw "caw" thing. Then I registered for classes, except because it was so late, most of the classes I wanted were full already. But I did get Design II, some Sociology class, a British Literature class, and an online course about Culture through Film or something. We basically watch movies and discuss it on the internets.

Also, while I was at the school today, I managed to land a job at the bookstore. Apparently four years' experience working at a comic book store finally paid off! I'm going in to fill out some paperwork tomorrow, and then I start training on Monday. Hooray! A job that's NOT waiting tables!

Also...

I have a secret announcement that I'll be making in a few days or so, once I get the last of the details finalized. I'll keep y'all updated, so keep an eye out. You're going to like it, I guarantee it.

Don't forget to come see me if you're going to AnimeFest in McKinney, TX! UPDATE!

THAT'S IT! That's ALL she wrote! And boy howdy I can't believe I am at 100,000 pageviews! This is just awesome!!

I'm such a loser. I've been sitting here going back and forth between Photoshop and deviantArt just to keep up with how many pageviews I had, counting down until I hit the big 100K.

Everyone who sent me an email or devNote before I posted this journal has made it into The Picture. I don't know how long it will take, because I've never drawn this many people in one picture before. I ended up with about 35 people, only two of which are zombies, by the way.

So, stay tuned!!

In Other News...

On a different note, this ALWAYS happens to me. I plan to go to an anime convention and get a table in the artist alley to sell prints and do sketchies and whatnot, but EVERY - SINGLE - TIME, for some reason or another, I don't get a table!

Usually, it's because by the time I remember I want to get a table at a convention, the deadline has already passed. This time around, I wanted to get a table at AnimeFest, but since I just moved and haven't started my new job yet, I have zero dollars, and all I could do was watch as the spaces filled up and there was still no money in my pocket to pay for one.

I'll get a table eventually, I'm sure I will. It's just kind of a bummer that this keeps happening. Blah.

But, speaking of new jobs, I'll be starting next week. I'll be working at El Chico, the Mexican restaurant that my sister ~nystra used to work at, and her husband ~StitchedUpRabbit still does work at. So this is me, in Texas! I got here like a week or two ago, and it's been fabulous. The apartments are nice, the place is quiet and I can keep things clean, and we have this snazzy little computer room, and it's all good times. I've put in applications to everywhere in the area almost, and I've got an interview on Saturday, so hopefully I'll have a job within the next week or so.

I've got to go to a mandatory new student orientation at UNT before I'm allowed to register for classes, and they're charging me $58 for it, which is absolutely ridiculous. I don't want to go on the stupid orientation anyway, and they're making me PAY for it? Totally lame.

I also have to talk to an academic advisor and the financial aid office and get all of that taken care of. And, unfortunately, I will have to take a full-time four-course schedule if I want to be on my mom's insurance, so I won't be able to do like I planned and just take 3 classes so I'd have extra time to work and get homework done and stuff.

I had to switch banks because the nearest Regions bank is 40 minutes away from here, so now I am a Bank of America minion. Rock on. I got $25 out of it cause my sister referred me or whatever, and since I opened a student account then they didn't do like a new account fee or whatever.

Other than that, life is swell. My hand hasn't been hurting at all since I came to Texas, so I've been drawing like a demon, in case you haven't noticed. I want to do more, but I'm running out of ideas. For a few days there, all I did was draw. I had so many ideas and I hadn't been able to draw them for so long, that it all just came spewing out at once.

Mmm. Spewing creative juices.

But now that the initial spurt has passed (mmm... passing inspirational spurts...) I'm running out of ideas. I wanna draw something pretty and detailed, but I don't know what to do. But really, in the grand scheme of things, that is a minor problem.

All in all, I am fantastic. Thank you very much.

Links and Stuff

Important Links
Kastle Comics
Atlanta Comic Creators
Post Secret
Engadget

Webcomics I Read
Count Your Sheep
Devil's Panties
Dominic Deegan
Girls With Slingshots
Looking for Group
Misfile
Red String
Wasted Talent

Stuff by my Favorite People

<a href="http:...

Everything about it just dazzles me. Every time I read it, I get completely and totally inspired to draw stuff. It's just so fantastic and amazing and breathtaking that I'm just like, "I want to draw something like that, too!" I catch myself just staring at pages and panels for minutes sometimes, trying to figure out exactly what about that particular panel makes it so awe-inspiring. I love love love it.

On the other hand, I'm actually secretly very afraid of doing Saiyuki fanart, because I worry that nothing I draw can possibly compare to Kazuya Minekura's phenomenal work. It's like, I feel like I'm not doing justice to the story and the characters and the artist.

But! I'm doing it anyway. I've actually got five pictures in the works, which just goes to show how inspirational that manga truly is. I've got one just typical color pinup group shot thing, and then a series of four potentially black and white illustrations, one for each character. I haven't decided if I'm going to do those in color or black and white, but I haven't done a lot of black and white lately, which is a shame cause I absolutely love it.

Unnnnfortunately, there isn't going to be anything from me for a few days at least. It's sooo frustrating, cause I'm halfway done with the color picture, and I want to finish it SO BAD, and I can't! And I'll tell you why I can't. I don't know what exactly I did, but my wrist and forearm and hand have been hurting all day today. Me and my mom both think it could be carpal tunnel, or at least like leading into it or something. So I've got to lay off my hand and wrist for a few days so it doesn't get worse and destroy the Money Hand. I probably shouldn't even be typing this much right now, but it's hard to stay completely away from my computer and deviantART and everything.

The whole wrist/hand/arm thing is a little worrying, really. I mean, this isn't the first time I've had inexplicable pains in my hand and arm, and it's always gone away shortly thereafter, but anything even remotely suggesting that I might not be able to use that hand for drawing much anymore is a scary thought.

Of course, with my lifestyle, it's really only to be expected that I'd get something like carpal tunnel eventually. The moment I decided I was going to be a computer junkie and an artist was like signing a contract that said I am willingly putting myself at that risk, and in no way blame the universe for what I'm doing to myself. I guess I'd just sort of hoped I'd hold out longer. Wait until I'm all old and junk before going all CTS on myself. Rar. Shame on you, Sarah. You're such a pansy.

My mom says I should probably get a wrist brace to use when I'm not working, because stabilizing the wrist is supposed to keep it from getting worse or whatever. I already use a stylus and tablet for most of my computer needs, which I hear is much easier on your hands and wrist than using a mouse is. I think I've got a fairly ergonomic computer station setup or whatever. If anyone else has any other suggestions, I am more than open to them.

Hopefully in a few days, I'll be good as new, and I'll be able to finish all these new pretty pictures I've been working on.

[EDIT] I got fanart! Would you LOOK at that pageview count I've got going on up there? I'm almost at 100,000! How COOL is that? It's taken me five years to get here, but I'm almost there! That is just so awesome!

I've actually got a cool surprise in mind for when I hit 100,000, so keep an eye on my journal as I get closer to find out more details about that. You'll want in on it, I promise.

In Other News

In non-dA-related news, I'm moving to Texas in about three weeks. I am SO excited. It's gonna rawck. I still haven't heard back from UNT, but it probably took Montevallo a while to get them my transcript or something. Got my fingers crossed and all that jazz.

Until I move to Texas, I've got a lot going on. I'm going to Birmingham one more time this weekend to hang out with friends and family and stuff. While I'm there, I'm going to show off the finished Kastle Comics stuff to Stan and give him the CD with the files on it so he can get it to the printer. I'll keep y'all updated as to when that'll be published and how to get ahold of one.

The weekend after that, there's the Summer Shindig for the Atlanta Comic Creators website thing, which I'm looking forward to. Still don't know where it's going to BE, and I hope they decide that soon.

The weekend after THAT, my stepsister is coming to visit up here for a week. I haven't seen much of her since I was like ten years old, so that's going to be WAY awesome.

Then the weekend after THAT is my little sister's 15th birthday, and then shortly afterwards, I'm moving to Tejas. So I'm gonna be a little busy!

CS4 Thoughts...

So, I recently got my hands on a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended. I gotta say, I'm actually not that impressed with it. Putting the files into tabs is annoying, they changed one of my shortcut keys, the menus are much more difficult to move around, and when you zoom out, the brush icon looks different, and it's distracting. Also, there's a thin little white border around the edge of the entire program, which throws me off a little. Like, it looks like the program screen isn't maximized all the way, even though it is, and it's super distracting. And I don't like the floating brush options menu. It always gets in my way. Couldn't they just leave it anchored to the top menu like before? It was mostly out of the way up there, anyway.

Also, it's incredibly slow. I don't know if that's just my computer (I've only got like 4G of RAM right now), but CS4 runs so slow that it's not even worth it to use it. It's hard to work with details or lots of layers cause everything gets all jerky, and anytime my mouse accidentally hovers over the image's title bar, it pops up with a yellow box of the image's name, and it doesn't go away until I hover over the title bar again. VERY bothersome.

Honestly, they didn't change a lot. Which is kind of the problem. The stupid little things they did change just bug me, and they didn't really do much of anything else from what I can tell. I've been using CS2 for a while now, and I'm just as happy going back to that. I don't think I'll be using much of CS4 unless there's a brush set or something that isn't compatible with CS2.

Kind of a let-down. I was getting all excited about using CS4 the whole time it was installing. Pout.

Links and Stuff

Important Links
Kastle Comics
<a href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?h...

I don't do much hand-drawn work for commissions, so of course this isn't the only reason. But the fact that BOTH of my scanners are broken still sucks!

Reason Two: I went to the pool and got SUPER bad sunburn on my thighs, which is where I hold my drawing pad and my wacom tablet when I'm working. It's excruciatingly painful. I didn't know my skin could turn this color.

Of course, of those were the ONLY two reasons, I could totally get past that. I could do all my work digitally, and suffer through the sunburn on my legs or something. I can do that.

What I CAN'T do is work while...

Reason Three: MY MONITOR IS BROKEN. Several people apparently don't read the entire journal, or skip over the part about how to give me my money. I CAN'T USE PAYPAL. Sorry.

Pricing

Here are the options available for you to choose from. If what you're thinking of doesn't fall into one of these categories, just talk to me and we'll work something out.

Blueline and Pencil Sketch - $15

Black and White Inked Drawing - $30

Inked with Digital Tones - $35

Color Character Design - $35

Full Color Picture (chunky lines) - $40

Full Color Picture (fine lines) (1-2 people) - $60

Full Color Picture (fine lines) (3+ people) - $80

Comic Strips/Pages - price depends on number of pages/panels/characters etc.

AGAIN. NOT TAKING PAYPAL. SORRY.

What You Get

When you commission a picture, first thing you'll get shown is a pencil sketch, or the Photoshop equivalent thereof. If you approve of the sketch, I'll move onto the final product.

After it's all finished, you'll be emailed a high-resolution copy of the picture to print out or use as you please, as long as you credit me if you post it on like Live Journal or MySpace or whatevs.

If you want me to email you a 8.5"x11" print on glossy photo paper, it'll be an extra $5 for printing and shipping costs. I can potentially print larger copies, but that'll be on a subject-by-subject basis, and pricing will vary.

Payment

Unfortunately, as I said several times, at the moment, I can't do PayPal because for the life of me I can't log into my account. I can't figure out the right combination of emails and passwords to get into any of my accounts, and I can't even remember which account is attached to my current bank account. So, no PayPal.

However, I will accept checks, post office money orders, or concealed cash. Also, you can send money online through Western Union with your credit card. I don't need payment right away, but you will not be sent the final picture until it reaches me.

NO PAYPAL.

Examples of Artwork

Just to give you an idea of what you'll be getting when you commission a picture from me.

Blueline and Pencil Sketch
I don't have any examples of this in my gallery. It's basically a sketch done in blue pencil, then cleaned up with tight graphite pencil lines.

Black and White Inked Drawing

Inked with Digital Tones
  <a h...

But they're all low DPI and I'm lazy, so most of them aren't available at all sizes or something like that. Maybe if I remember from here on out, I'll make sure to save another copy at a higher resolution to submit to the print thingy. I don't actually expect anybody to buy anything, I just figured there was no reason not to put the thingy on there.

Too bad all of my best pictures are fanart... The artwork starts out a little off, but it gets better, and in color! Also, I have a thing for autobiographical comics about nerds and geeks and stuff. So, major kudos for this comic. I think mayhaps you should check it out, especially if you're a fan of comics like The Devil's Panties or Girls With Slingshots.

  One Last Thing

Also, it looks like I'm apparently going to be at ConDFW in Dallas, Texas in like February-ish or something like that. So, long way off, but that's where I'll be come February. I'm looking into other cons in Texas, since I'll be moving there shortly, and keep people updated as to where I'll be, and if I'll have a table selling pictures and doing commissions and stuff. Assuming, you know, people care.

  Last One, I Swear!

Oh, one more thing. I'm sure some of you remember Kastle Comics, my totally awesome, albeit currently deceased, webcomic. Well, for those of you who enjoyed it, I've got good news (not "food news", which I just typoed!). I'm at the tail end of a series of three original stories for Kastle Comics, never before seen on the website! I've got five more pages to ink, then the covers and such, and then I send it off to Stan for him to take care of the printing process. So hopefully maybe before the end of the year, assuming all goes well, there should be a big beefy Kastle Comics comic for y'all to buy and read and love. It looks like it's gonna be around 50 pages long (longer than I thought it would be! zomg!), but I have no idea what the price range or anything will be yet.

Also, I have no ideas for a cover. XP Go me. I can draw comics all day, but ask me...

Well. I declare Imagicon 2009 a complete success! It was a little on the small side, and there were a few organization issues, but that's really only to be expected for a con's first run-through. But I had a BLAST.

Of course, I show up to the convention expecting to help out at the Dealer's Table and walk around with some of the costume characters to hand out business cards, and then kick ass at the comic art contest. Little did I know that Stan had other plans in store for me! I did a lot of the aforementioned such n such, but then Stan comes out with, "Oh, by the way, Sarah, one of our people can't show up for the How to Get Published panel, so you're going to take his place!"

WUT.

So I ended up being on a panel Saturday evening. It was me and Chris Fason and Sean Taylor and Bobby Nash and Jamie Cottle and that WereRat guy whose name I can't remember. It was a lot of fun, actually. I had a good time. And I think the crowd liked us, because we were only supposed to be in there for an hour, and we ended up just chilling and talking for close to two hours, and nobody got up and left. It was fun. And I got to hang out with Sean and Bobby, who are both comic book writers, and they have decided that I am awesome, and said that they'd look forward to working with me in the future. Woohoo! Always a good idea to make friends with comic writers!

As far as the art contest goes, that was kind of a flop. Only two people showed up, me and my buddy Geoffrey. But it was good times still. We each had to draw five words or phrases out of plastic baggies, and draw a one page 11x17 comic thingy about those words. Geoffrey got "Aquagirl photographs a changing monkey outside the Hall of Justice", and I got "Leonardo (from the TMNT) investigates an energetic Christian Bale outside the Legion of Doom". Needless to say, both were VERY amusing. And Sean and Bobby were our judges, and decided that we both one first place! So we split the prize and ended up with 1 1/2 packs of comic art boards, which is AWESOME, cause that stuff ain't cheap.

Me and Geoffrey gave our comic pages to Sean and Bobby with the promise that they would scan them and email us copies. So as soon as I get that email, I'll post my page in my gallery, just cause it makes me laugh so much.

Aside from that, I did lots of hanging out at our dealer's table and drawing pictures. I sold some sketches off the table and stuff, and probably made like $50 over the weekend or something. Did a couple commissions and then sold some generic pictures like a smexxy Emma Frost and a Kingdom Heart Sora and stuff like that.

And now! Picture time!!

Despite the fact that I didn't DO anything or DRESS as anything, I still managed to end up in a picture!! Check it out!

I'm the chick with her face hidden behind the camera, in case you couldn't guess. I was escorting Spider-man (one of our customers in one of our costumes) around to make sure he got to the events he needed to be at and didn't get accosted by fangirls. My job was pretty easy, though, cause he was usually the one accosting people, and I had no orders to stop that. Except when he picked ME up and threw me over his shoulder and carried me away. Then I had to protest. He said he had a thing for readheads.

The bright green sticker he's wearing is from a blood drive that was going on on the second floor of the convention. There were some very amusing moments where Spidey sat down in one of the chairs and the blood drive people went hysterical, taking pictures of them "drawing blood" and him fainting and stuff. This one kid next to me was all, "Look, Spider-man's giving blood! I hope it's not still radioactive!"

Then we had a little Marvel/DC crossover thing going on here.

Batman was another of Kingdom Comics' customers in one of our costumes.

Millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne by day. Aside from that, I'll be at tables and panels and events if people need me or if I just wanna stop by and check it out.

If you're going to be in the Birmingham area at all this weekend, totally come by and check it out! I've heard some awesome things about this comic convention, and I know my boss wouldn't have invested his time and effort into working the comic track if he didn't think it would be worth it. So go!

Like I said before, if you can't find me, worse comes to worst, go to the Art Contest on Sunday. Wait till the end of the contest. The girl WINNING the contest? Like I said, I don't give a damn about the picture, but it's the PRINCIPLE of the thing! Raslfrasl. [/EDIT]

... so I was just reported for art theft ...

Can you believe that? ME! Reported on dA for art theft! I just go to check my messages, and I've got a couple devNotes in my box saying I was reported and the picture was deleted from my gallery. I don't care about the picture, really. But the fact that someone accused me of stealing artwork is insulting!

You probably don't even remember the picture. I did it years and years ago. It was of Kouga from Inuyasha as a kid getting a baby wolf cub. I don't even LIKE the picture anymore, and in fact I think I stuck it in my scrapbook forever ago. But it's the principal of the thing! I mean, the NERVE of someone accusing ME of art theft! I am SO damn offended right now! I am the LAST person on the face of the PLANET who would steal someone's artwork! I've ranted in journals about that before, and I'm sure some of you long-time watchers remember that!

UGH! I am SO pissed off about this! Really!

I "submitted an inquiry to the Help Desk" to get my lame-ass picture put back in my gallery, but they said it'll take 48 hours before I hear back from them.

UGH! And again I say UGH!

Tams thinks what probably happened is some stupid teenager saw my picture, and THEY stole it, and told all their little 12-year-old friends that THEY drew it. Then when one of the said stupid 12-year-old friends saw MY picture, the ORIGINAL, they flipped shit and thought "OMG SOMEONE STOLE MY BEST FRIEND'S WORK I MUST REPORT IT WITHOUT THINKING OR ANYTHING OMG!"

Sounds plausible to me.

UGH once again! UUGGHH.

I mean, I appreciate the dA report system and all that, and it is really handy for when there are ACTUAL art thieves out there, but this is ridiculous! They just deleted it without mentioning it or talking to me or anything. Did they bother asking if I stole it? NO. Did they even bother checking to see if there was another one of these floating around dA? Probably not! If they did, any genius could look at the fucking DATE and see that I posted mine first!

RARG.

In other news, ImagiCon next weekend. I'm horrible at remembering to update this thing. Turns out that Kingdom Comics is going to be running the comic track at ImagiCon this year! I've gone over the website, and this con looks like it is going to be totally awesome. I'm going to try my damnedest to be in Birmingham and maybe steal a dealer's pass or something.

Oh, and there's this totally neat art contest they're doing at the con, too! You show up with your art supplies, and draw like 5 random words out of a bucket, and then you have 2 1/2 hours to draw a full 11x17 comic page about those random 5 words you picked. That just sounds like way too much fun! So if I can go, I'm totally gonna win. If you live in the area, and you're going to ImagiCon, watch the contest and check out the chick who wins. That'll be me.

In other news, I don't normally do memes and stuff, but this one just seemed fun. You just write 25 random facts about yourself. Sounds easy enough. Let's give it a shot! Go!

1. I've had chicken pox twice. Ouch.
2. I'm the only kid in my family that hasn't had a serious head injury.
3. My total height is 5' 2 1/4", but I tell everyone that I'm 5' 3" to make myself feel taller.
4. I drive a red PT Cruise with flames up the side, and his name is Elvis Phillip Terrance Cruiser.
5. I haven't been to a comic book store in two months. It's killing me! I'm SO behind!
6. I don't like chocolate. Inhuman, right?
7. I have four freckles on my right arm that are in a perfectly straight line. Seriously.
8. I can also connect the dots on certain freckles on my leg and make the big dipper.
9. I skinned my elbow when I fell off the mechanical bull last week... Still hurts. >.<
10. ...I haven't shaved my legs in about a month...
11. My typing speed is about 180 WPM on a good day, with very few (if any) typos.
12. I've never failed a class in my life, but I had to take summer school twice (including the summer after senior year) because the school lost some of my credits.
13. I think between kindergarten and senior year, I went to 14 different schools. Maybe 13. I lost count.
14. I'm on question #14 and already running out of things to say!
15. I'm real big into American Idol. I want Danny Goki or Adam Lambert or Scott Maccintyre(sp?) to win.
16. Um... I never beat Kingdom Hearts. I just watched my brother beat the final boss battle. I got stuck at the Hollow Bastion.
17. Tiny Titans and Spider-man Loves Mary Jane are my guilty-pleasure comics.
18. I've never seen High School Musical, but I secretly almost want to, just to see what all the hype is about.
19. I kick ass at Tetris.
20. I'm one of those weird people that likes playing Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit and doing crosswords and stuff.
21. Uuuuhhh.... I broke my arm when I was little when I fell out of the car and my mom ran over me.
22. I am a Ninjapirate. Yes, those exist.
23. I have a WALL-E comforter on my bed. And a matching pillow case.
24. UM. I'm taller than my mom and my older sister, but my little sister is taller than me. Rar.
25. YAR I'M DONE!

-Kastle Comics

My first journal update in three months. Huh. I hadn't realized it had been quite that long. I keep up with stuff teh_good.

As far as stuff goes, Kastle Comics hasn't been updated recently because my computer with my scanner and printer and comics and photoshop and stuff like that is BROKEN. OH NOES.

I can fix it, but I also just moved into a new apartment, and I can't find some stuff, including my KEYBOARD, which is slightly necessary for the working functionality of a computer, THUSLY, the computer is out of comission until I can find my keyboard and reinstall Windows and whatnot.

Until THEN, I am stealing Trevor's laptop so there.

On another note, I am horribly ashamed of myself. I did something today that I had never done before, and swore that I would never do. It was a terrible, horrible thing that I have done, and I don't really know how I'm going to recover from it, but I'm sure I'll manage it somehow. Eventually. With the help of extensive therapy.

What have I done? Weeeellll....

My friend Eric talked me into playing World of Warcraft today. And I couldn't help it. I liked it. X(

This is something I had never thought I would enjoy at all ever in my life and yet here I am enjoying it... Hopefully I won't get hopelessly addicted, but let's be serious here. I got addicted to Animal Crossing like it was crack on a stick.

I better just face it. I'm screwed.

Damn you, WoW!
All righty, by our clock, 24HCD is officially over. Why am I awake typing this right now, then? Well, here's the skinny.

When we started at 12:00, we only had about three people, because everyone else was running late or forgot what time it was or had to come in between work shifts or something. So it started out slow. But more people showed up, whether it was to draw or just to hang out, and then things started kicking.

I ended up finishing my comic at 5:02 in the morning, which means it took me a grand total of 17 hours do to 24 pages, and that was with more detail than I'd ever managed to get into a 24 hour comic before. So apparently drawing Kastle Comics all the time has gotten me used to drawing fast while still retaining quality.

Which, you know, rocks.

So I was the first one finished. I hung around for another half hour while I packed up and everyone read my comic, then drove home at about 5:27 in the morning. As soon as I got home at about 6, I crashed instantly. But now the sun is out and my room mate is awake and has his stereo on, so that means Sarah is awake until further notice.

When I left the store at 5:27, no one else had finished yet. There were 5 people still drawing, and one person hanging around and occasionally scribbling something in crayon on a sheet of paper. I'll find out on Wednesday when I go to work again which ones finished and which ones didn't make it.

There was also a friend of ours who showed up with a video camera, and recorded some stuff, so once he edits that and whatever, he'll probably post it online somewhere, and I'll link to it for y'all to check out.

As soon as I get my comic back from Stan, I'll scan it and upload it for y'all to see.

Till then, I'm going to find something to do that requires no movement or cognitive thought.
Oh man oh man oh man! 24 Hour Comic Day is this Saturday, booyeah!

It took me a while but I finally came up with an idea and I've been sketching the characters like crazy trying to commit them to memory before I get to the event so I remember what they look like! I know last year, I completely forgot what my characters were supposed to look like, so main character dude ended up with a big dandelion head for his hair. It was baaaad.

I figured I might as well mention a few things for anyone who's planning on doing 24HCD, whether it be your first time, or you've done it every year since it's come out. Just like, advice or tips I've learned doing this for four years in a row now.

-Be prepared. Bring everything you'll need, and even things you think you won't need. I know the first year, all my pens ran out partway through the night, and I had to borrow from someone else so I could finish. And don't just bring 24 pieces of paper, because I guarantee you'll need more.

-Drink lots of caffeine. Seriously. You need to be able to stay awake for more than 24 hours, and the best way to do it is caffeine. Whether it be soda, coffee, or energy drinks. Also, snack throughout the night. I don't know if this holds true for everyone, but sometimes if all I do is drink soda, by 6 or 7 in the morning, my hands start shaking. So eat food!

-Wear comfortable clothing. You're going to be sitting in one spot in these clothes and shoes all night, so make sure it's comfy. I have a lucky shirt that I've worn every year, and if I can find it, I'm gonna wear it this year, too. It's ultra comfy. I also always bring a hoodie, just in case Stan goes crazy with the A/C like he did the first year.

-Now, this may not apply to everyone, but from what I've seen the last few years, almost everyone who finishes all 24 pages follows a similar plan of attack. This is what I (and they-ish) do. I come up with an idea before I go in there. I try to come up with it as soon as I can, so I can go over it in my head a lot to make sure I've got it down. You can't go in with any writing or characters or layouts or anything, so it's all gotta be in your head. As soon as the event starts, I jot down quick thumbnail layouts to get it out there so I don't get to 6 in the morning and not be able to remember what happens next. Also, to make sure my story fits in 24 pages.

After that, as fast as I can, I make the world's messiest sketch of my characters, just so I have a reference for when my brain dies. Then I get started drawing.

This is where most all the finishers do the same thing. We go through and pencil every single page in order first, just to make sure we've got something on paper. Then we go back and do basic inking on all 24 pages, then if there's time, so back and do more detailed inking and shading and whatnot. This way, you don't burn yourself out on the first few pages, and even if you run out of time and can't finish inking, you have 24 pages at least in pencil. It also helps pace yourself, I think, because it gives you a better idea of how fast you can work and how much time you're allowed to spend on each page to make things work.

And I guess that's it from me. This entire journal was pretty pointless, but I think I get entirely too excited about this event each year. It's always something I really look forward to, and it's always a lot of fun. I've recruited a bunch of people this year, including a ten-year-old girl! Granted, she isn't staying the whole 24 hours because she's not allowed to stay up that late, but she's gonna show up and draw pictures too! Rock on, ten-year-old girl! Rock on!

-Kastle Comics

Hokey dokey. Let's see. I'm going to Anime Weekend Atlanta this weekend. I won't have an artist table (I missed sign-up again...), but I'll be walking the con in costume, I'm gonna be girl-type Ranma cause it was an easy and cheap last-minute costume to make.

Hopefully, I'll be getting an art table at MTAC this year, if I don't miss the registration dates again. Those artist alley tables sell out so fast that you have to catch it like the DAY they go on sale, otherwise you don't make it. And that whole waiting list thing is crap, if you're on the "waiting list", it just means "no". Meh.

Really, though, MTAC would be the perfect con for me to get an art table at, because I don't even like that con anymore. Any other convention, I'd want to walk around and go to events and stuff, but MTAC lost me after last year. They aren't doing GEEK anymore, and Lisa Ray isn't coming, so there isn't much left that I really really look forward to for that one. So, here's hoping I get a table.

Also, I am currently working on formatting my comic strip Kastle Comics into print-mode, and should hopefully have a volume of that printed sometime shortly, assuming I get off my lazy bum and do the work. If I get that off the ground, not only will there be bunches of KC strips in there, but also an original story not featured on the website, and an additional story about Hobos and Penguins drawn by Wess.

And also also, don't forget 24 Hour Comic Day, coming up fast! It's October 18th this year, and it's gonna be awesome! Partly because we could end up with FREE BAWLS!! Rock on!!

I've been trying to think of a comic idea for this year, but my mind's coming up blank! Oh noes!

-Kastle Comics

Fun times.

So, here's how it goes down.

Monday
10:00-11:30 Intro to Digital Media
Rest of the day is free. Watch this not happen again.

Tuesday
9:30-10:45 Art History (9 ****ing 30!)
11:00-12:00 World Lit
2:00-3:30 Intro to Psychology

Wednesday
10:00-11:30 Intro to Digital Media
12:00-9:00 Work

Thursday
9:30-10:45 Art History (9 ****ing 30!!!!)
11:00-12:00 World Lit
2:00-3:30 Intro to Psychology

Friday
10:00-11:30 Intro to Digital Media
12:00-9:00 Work

Saturday
12:00-9:00 Work

Sunday
1:00-5:00 Work

SO! Bye-bye, life. See ya later. I just made it through my first two days, and I've already got to read three chapters of The Odessey, and like two chapters for Psychology. Oh, and the book store gave me a PHYSICS book instead of a PSYCHOLOGY book when I made the order online. Clever people.

To save on gas, I'm riding my bike, right? Except the chain is rusted, so it can only be in 1st or 5th gear, and the back tire is flat. Wheeeeee!

The good news is, my Intro to Digital Media class will be better than I thought. I originally thought it was going to be all Photoshop and Illustrator, which, after years of personal use, I have nearly mastered (I don't think anyone can FULLY master Photoshop), so I was worried that there wouldn't be anything new the class could teach me. But! Turns out we'll be learning Flash and Dreamweaver, too. Awesome! The teacher is... um... odd... But some of the projects look totally awesome.

I totally lucked out when it comes to Art History. Normally, the class is looking at slides and memorizing artist names and dates and stuff. But this semester, the very semester I signed up for, they're changing the curriculum! So instead of memorizing dates and names, which I totally can't do, it's just going to be learning about the themes and motifs of the different periods of art, and understanding the thought process behind it, which I can totally do! Naturally, they changed the course structure because the almighty Sarah was going to be attending the class, and they knew it would displease me if it was nothing but slides in a dark room for an hour and a half at 9:30 in the morning.

World Lit is gonna be eh. The teacher is funny, which is cool, but it's gonna be strict as all get out. No skimming over the chapters ten minutes before class like I did in English 102. Nope. I'm gonna hafta actually read these books now. We're reading The Odessey, In Cold Blood (which we're only reading cause it was written by a guy from Alabama), Shakespeare's Othello (I hate reading Shakespeare, he's not as good as everyone cracks him up to be!), and The Joy Luck Club, which I have never heard of, but I'm getting the feeling I probably should have.

And then we've got Intro to Psychology, which I'm only taking because it's required and it's the only thing I could get to fit into my schedule. The class actually looks like it could be cool if Dr. Jones would shut the hell up and stop talking about himself and how fertile his wife is, and just get on with teaching us the class. Ugh. I hate temp teachers.

Yay for college!

In OTHER news, I got my hands on a free brand-new never-been-opened 7-pen Rapidograph set! HOLYCRAPOMGWTFBBQEXCLAMATIONPOINT!!! I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, because of aforementioned soulrape program I'm currently attending, but I will! Oooohhhhh, I will.

-Kastle Comics

After almost ten years, they're bringing back my FAVORITE anime EVER! It was my very very first real anime (I don't count Sailor Moon as a real anime), and it's always been my absolute favorite series in the whole entire world.

The first two seasons, Prime and Next, were amazing as all get out. Then when TRY came out, I was so excited, but it just didn't live up to the excellence of it's previous incarnations.

But now! Revolution! It looks excellent!! The first episode sets it up to be just as amazing as Next, and it's chock full of typical Slayers-y humor. Absolutely brilliant!

The only downside is that I'm going to have to watch this week by week instead of a 26-episode all-night marathon like I'm used to.

Shira's Annual Jump!

So, somehow, in between being busy with school and work and never having a day off anymore, I still managed to watch two excellent anime in the last couple weeks. These two anime are Baccano! and Seirei no Moribito.

First off, Baccano!. It's not spelled right without the "!" so bear with me cause punctuation here can get pretty messy. Baccano! is, without a doubt, one of the best anime I have ever seen. You know the kind of wow you get when you watch Cowboy Bebop? That's the kind of wow you get when you watch Baccano!. It keeps you on the edge of your seat every single episode. There are more characters than you think you can easily keep track of, but the opening sequence shows you most of the main characters and their names in big bold letters, so by the fourth or fifth episode you've pretty much got all twenty million of them down.

The way the episodes are set up in crazy up the wazoo. It makes Tarantino look tame in comparison. You know how Pulp Fiction takes the stories of seemingly unrelated circumstances and somehow ties them together? Times that by fifty. You know how Kill Bill mixes up the order of things and shows you the ending first and stuff? Again, times by fifty. Baccano! starts at the end, jumps around all over the effing place, and leaves you confused as all get out and just begging for more. Every episode leaves you and your friends talking back and forth trying to figure out just what the hell went on and what the hell is going to happen next.

Not only is the story and the was they unveil the story interesting, but the characters are unique and original and oh-so-fun to be around. There is no "main character," because each of the twenty characters is the main character in his or her own story line. It just so happens that his or her story line interweaves with every other main characters' story lines in crazy ways. The story is very serious, with some strong violent themes, but the comic relief characters still seem to fit in perfect place with the rest of the story. The characters, while none of them are your perfectly normal human, they behave like a real person with their experiences and abilities would. It's all pretty realistic for a hyper-unrealistic setting.

I realize I've come all this way without actually telling you the plot of the anime. That's because I can't. It's not because it's too confusing -- after you see the final episode, everything makes sense -- it's because if I tell you ANYTHING about the plot, the story won't be nearly as fun. Baccano! isn't just a fun show, it's a fun show to watch. You catch my meaning? It's not just the show is entertaining, it entertains you. Like, it doesn't feel like you're just vegetating on the couch watching a good TV show. It's more interactive than that, and part of what makes it so involving is how much you don't know.

So, without telling you anything about the story, all I can tell you is everything I've told you so far, which is surprisingly a lot. Because it's not just about the story. There's more to it than that. Like I said earlier, this is one of THOSE animes. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun... The REALLY good ones. It's been a long time since I've seen a REALLY good anime. I've seen some good ones, and I've enjoyed all of them, but Baccano! is one of THOSE. It sticks with you, and it manages to remain in your top five forever.

The next anime I've seen lately isn't quite in the same category as Baccano!, because nothing aside from Cowboy Bebop is in the same category as Baccano!. Seirei no Moribito (The Guardian of the Sacred Spirit) is an excellent anime, though. It didn't catch my interest right off the bat like Baccano! did. In fact, my opinion towards it for the first few episodes was, "Well, I have nothing better to do, I might as well watch Seirei no Moribito." That feeling only lasted about three or four episodes before I really got into it.

Seirei no Moribito is in a feudal pseudo-Japan with some Chinese influences. The whole scenery is gorgeous, and the attention they pay to detail in the culture of the different regions is stunning. Visually, this anime is completely gorgeous. The animation is fantastic and fluid, and the fight scenes are intense. None of that dramatic anime-type fight scene stuff where the opposing factions face each other down and battlestare for ten minutes and exchange witty dialogue before attacking. There are no pauses in between attack rounds for the characters to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their opponent. When fighting happens, it HAPPENS. BAM! It starts, it goes, it finishes, and it looks HORRIBLY impressive while it's happening. There are very few sword fights, you know. Most of the fights are done with spears, which I, for one, have never seen animated before. And it's not that flashy stuff like in the live-action movie Hero, either. This is the real de...

Okay, ew. Next semester of college is not going to be pleasant. I had to register late because I forgot to turn in a health form and had to find time in my crazy busy schedule to see a doctor and get a physical, right? So I turned my form in today and could finally register for classes, except because I was late in registering, all the classes I wanted to take were closed. So, here's the happy fun times I ended up with...

MWF
11:00-11:50
English 102 Composition II

TR
11:00-1:30
Art 102 Drawing II

2:00-3:15
Math 131 Inter Algebra

T
5:00-7:30
History 102 World Civ II

See that? See THAT? That means I only get ONE art class this semester, because every other time slot was either closed or in the middle of the day on MWF, which I can't do because I have to work. So bleeeh.

Not to mention books this semester are gonna be like $300... I need to check and see if my World Civ II book is the same as my World Civ I book... If it is, I'll save like $90. If not, I'm trading my World Civ I book in next week. W00t.

But, the good news is, this semester is over, I passed all my classes, aced all my finals, and now I finally get to have some free time! Except all my free time is going to be spent doing stuff I didn't have time to do during the semester... Like finishing that kid's book thing... and redoing the Shuffle artwork... and catching up on commissions...

Looks like there's nothing but fun times ahead for me! How did y'all's first semester go?

First thing I'll be doing over the next few days or so is scanning and uploading my 24 Hour Comic from this year, and my first real attempt at coloring something in colored pencil in more than three years. It turned out halfway decent if I do say so myself.
Annnnnd that's about it. But now that I have a computer again, expect updates in the near future.

Also, my car, Elvis Phillip Terrence Cruiser, had a slip-up today. His steering just randomly died while I was driving out to get lunch. That was fun, let me tell you. I managed to maneuver it into a parking lot straddling two or three parking spaces outside Domino's. Then came the fun adventure of calling everyone we knew to figure out what was wrong, walking to two gas stations before finding a garage, walking back and forth from the garage to Domino's half a dozen times, calling a couple different tow truck people, and waiting around uselessly for two hours while everyone figured out what to do.

When we FINALLY got my car to the garage, they couldn't even do anything because they were about to close, so I won't even know what's wrong with it until tomorrow. Common consensus is something with the power steering. WHAT with the power steering, no one rightly knows. But hopefully I'll find out tomorrow, and then I get to figure out how to pay for it once I find out how much it'll cost.

I got a ride back home by some crazy stroke of luck, and spent the last two hours unpacking stuff and getting my living space all organized.

You know, after getting my tires slashed Halloween weekend, this was not allowed to happen. Karma says so.

Sooo in the horrible turn of events that could only be caused by karma vampires, my computer has... um... well, died.

See, thing is, I got my first blue screen of death on my computer about a week ago. My computer is like two years old, and blue screens of death aren't that horrible, and it usually doesn't mean anything, so I thought nothing of it.

Then it wouldn't turn on. If it did turn on, it would lock up or turn itself off again. I tried to run a virus scan, but it wouldn't stay on long enough to let me finish the scan. Now it's at the point where I'll turn it on, it locks up instantly, and when I try to restart it, it refuses to turn on at all.

I was hoping to be able to salvage my important files by putting them on my external hard drive, and then just wiping the main hard drive cause anything else I could just re-download or whatever. Buuuut since my computer won't stay on, it looks like that won't happen. Meaning I'm going to have to spend time and money to take my computer to a shop and see what they can do about it.

That's right, it's that time of year again. 24 Hour Comic Day is October 20th and 21st. Just go to the official website to check out locations and times and such. If you've never heard of 24 Hour Comic Day, it's a worldwide event that takes place every year. People all congregate at comic stores and art stores and such and attempt to draw a 24-page comic book in 24 hours or less. It's a blast every year, and a great challenge to undertake as an artist. I encourage everyone who can make it to attempt it. If you can't get to an official location, that's okay too. You can work straight from home, and mail or email your comics in to the judges. It's just always more fun if you can do it with more people. Things get pretty crazy when you've got a room of artists hyped up on coke and coffee at 4 in the morning.

Secondly off, Anime Weekend Atlanta is this weekend, and I'll be there. I won't be in costume or have a table, because I'm a poor starving artist. I'm going to attempt to get a table for MTAC this year, though. So if I can afford it and get to it before they sell out, I'll be setting up at MTAC and selling prints and original drawings and whatnot.

Speaking of starving artists, I'm going to start taking commissions. I'll post a journal later with all the rules and stuff. Until then, if you really want something right away, devNote me or email me at ninja.shira@gmail.com to discuss the details.

Okay, so here's how college goes... I got all my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I can work all day Wednesday and Friday. So!

Art122: 8-effing-o'clock till 10:30, 2D Design and Color Theory. Originally thought it would be boring, but I think I MIGHT like it if I can stay awake.

English101: 11:00 - 12:15, Composition. My teacher is really cool, we won't be doing a lot of reading, which is cool. It's all about the essays, yo, which I guess isn't too horrible.

History101: 2:00 - 3:15, World Civilizations. They taught us this in 7th grade. Ugh. And the stupid lady talks too quiet and I can't hear a thing she's saying. Le suck.

Art112: 5:00 - 7:15, Drawing. YES. The ONLY class I look FORWARD to each day. Love that teacher, and the three Sarahs all sit right next to each other, which is funny.

Having like 2 hours between classes is kinda cool, I guess, cause I can go to the bank and have time to go home or take a nap or something. But trying to find parking when I get back on campus again is a pain in the ass.

So, my days are...

Sunday: work 1-5
Monday: OMG SLEEP IN DO NOTHING
Tuesday: class all freaking day
Wednesday: work 12-9
Thursday: class all freaking day
Friday: work 12-9
Saturday: work 12-9

So I get ONE day off a week, and half of Sunday. Joy. Goodbye, life. Hello, college.

Speaking of which, I hafta go do my History homework that's due in an hour.

In other news, I'm completely broke, but life, the universe, and everything is still spinning, so I guess it's not the end of the world.

I discovered a new coloring technique, I've got several little pictures in the making, and my Brain Age gets younger every day. I've done more Sudoku on that game in the past few days than I have in my whole life. It's very addicting when you're bored.

I've had several potential offers for art-related work, including an expression of interest by Big City Comics, but nothing big yet. I think I'll finally get around to finishing that kid's book, though, now that the writer's life has calmed down. He's going to send me the final check (YAY!) and some revision notes soon, and then I can get the work finished on that.

I have to buy a parking pass for college, get my oil changed, buy my costume for AWA, register for AWA, and visit my mom this coming weekend, and I don't have the cash for any of it. College life is fun, and I haven't even started yet.

At work on Friday, I had a little accident... I slammed my finger in the solid wood door to the back room, and broke the middle finger on my right hand. Meaning I can't hold a pencil right now.
All righty! I just got back from visiting my Great Gramma in New York. A 13-hour road trip one-way... That means over 26 hours and over 3,000 miles just there and back. And we had to go to the airport four times to pick up and drop off my mom, sisters, and brother-in-law. And I had to pick up my brother in Chattanooga before the road trip even started. All told, I spent probably over 40 hours in a car this last week.

Have you ever heard this song?

"...there's nothing wrong with Ohio
except the snow and the rain..."

It's by Bowling for Soup. It is wrong. The worst part about Ohio is that it lasts FOREVER. Ohio took up HALF of the 13-hour drive! And there is NOTHING in that state! You drive through two cities, and the rest of it is FLAT FLAT FLAT FARM FLAT TREE FLAT FLAT COW FLAT. Ugh. I hate Ohio. My least favorite state in the world.

BUT. Aside from the brain-nummingly boring road trips and the jelly-like condition my legs are in now, I had a great time. It was so much fun to get everybody all in one place again.

Now that I'm back, I've got to catch up on commissions, wheeee. I hafta paint a lady's portrait, I have to draw a close-up of a guy's main character, and a group picture of all his characters (there's like ten of them), and I hafta draw a slightly risque poster of a bunch of DC superheroes for a guy at work. And I have to learn how to draw zebras.

THEN I can get back to stuff I want to do. Yay!

Oh, real quick though... While I was in New York, a funny thing happened... My gramma made some REALLY good corn bread, but she made way way way too much, right? So she crumbled some up and left it out for the squirrels, cause she has lots of squirrel-infested trees in her side yard. And so she gave them corn bread for three or four days before she ran out. Two days after she stopped feeding them corn bread, we found a dead rabbit in her drive way. So what we figure happened is, the squirrels wanted more corn bread. So they decided to give an animal sacrifice to their corn-bread-giving God. So they killed a rabbit and left it as an offering to convince God Gramma to give them more corn bread.

It didn't work, but she did give them garlic crackers. I think they liked that.

So, just something to get that huge-ass MTAC Report off my front page...

Saturday was Free Comic Book Day. Holy CRAP it was HUGE. And I thought last year was busy! Oi! A half hour before the store even opened, we had a huge line waiting outside the door, and then until 1:00, the store was so packed you could barely move.

We had a bunch of superheroes at the store. There was Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, Spider-Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Supergirl, and a couple Storm Troopers. Darth Vader was supposed to show up, but he was busy with his Homewood Day Parade thingy. As soon as I get pictures from that, I'll post a couple.

The last few days, I've been playing Tales of Legendia. It's not as good as Tales of Symphonia, but I've been enjoying it. I only have a few complaints with it. Like it's ridiculously easy. With ToS, you had to figure out what you were supposed to do next, and there were a few battles where I died and had to try again. In ToL, it tells you exactly where you're supposed to go exactly when you're supposed to get there. You never have to think of anything for yourself. And all the battles have been really really easy. Even the ones you're set up to lose end really fast. They could at least give you a run for your money.

Also, the story has been kinda cheesy... There's a certain level of cheese I expect every RPG to have, but this one crosses the line. But don't get me wrong, I've been having a great time with this game. The character interaction is hilarious. The Bantam Bouncers have gotten me laughing almost to the point of tears several times. But I think it's kind of almost more like playing an anime than playing a video game.

Speaking of anime, I just started a new series that has just got me in stitches. It's called Welcome to the NHK. NHK stands for Nihon Hikikomori Kyoukai (I think), which is basically an imaginary society to encourage young Japanese youths to become hikikomori, or social reclusive people that are afraid to leave there own homes. The main character is a hikikomori and is convinced there's a conspiracy with the NHK (does not exist!) to keep him a hikikomori. And so his kitchen appliances tell him that the only way to combat the conspiracy is to remain a hikikomori. But slowly he starts to leave the house more, become a porno-obsessed, dating-sim-loving otaku fanboy. And there's this girl who takes him on as her personal project to try and cure him of being a hikikomori. I've seen about half the series, and I am LOVING it. Not recommended for anyone under fifteen, though!

In other news, I'm thinking of getting a second computer monitor to hook up so I have more on-screen space to work with in Photoshop. Having one monitor isn't bad or anything, but when I've got my reference pictures open and my drawing open and all my toolbars and stuff, it gets kinda cluttered. With another monitor, I can put my reference pics and toolbars on one screen, and have my drawing on the other screen, stuff like that. I'm checking out Best Buy tomorrow to see if I can get a good deal on a monitor.

And that's the sum of my life up till now. Free Comic Book Day, Tales of Legendia, Welcome to the NHK, and a potential second monitor. Exciting, no?

So! I just got back from MTAC Prime '07. It wasn't as good as last year. There wasn't as much cool stuff to do. However! What little there WAS to do was GREAT. I absolutely loved GEEK this year (Goldenboy Extreme Elimination Challenge), that's always one of my favorite events. Unfortunately, this was GEEK's last year at MTAC. No more GEEK ever. Very very sad.

Also, the Lisa Furukawa concert was, once again, fantastic. Since the theme of this year was giant robots (MTAC Prime? Optimus Prime? Get it?), she sang Mr. Roboto by STYX at the beginning of her first concert. As soon as she started, half the room starting cheering and shouting, and then after she started singing, the other half finally realized what she was singing, and they started cheering too. Good times.

Me and my buddy Chip got to hang out with Lisa and her conguy at the Paradise Kiss Evening at the Attelier event. The deal was you had to be invited by one of the constaff because you're dressed like you wore ParaKiss clothes. Me and Chip didn't dress up, but Lisa was invited because, hey, she's Lisa Furukawa, and so she brought us with her. It was pretty fun, they gave us bubbly juice in champagne glasses and really good cake, and they were playing some really good anime music. We just sat around and talked for a few hours and it was good times.

And, Chip got to do something he's wanted to do for a long time. He got to sing with Lisa Furukawa. They sang Yoko Kanno's "Be Human" and it was pretty. Rob sang with them, too. That was a lot of fun watching them, and that just made Chip's day.

Again unfortunately, this was Lisa's last year at MTAC for a while. She's been there three years in a row, and now they need to schedule someone new to shake things up. I wish I could have gone to her final concert on Sunday, but we were standing in line for two hours and it was running late and we had a three hour drive to get home, and we couldn't hang around any longer. And I'm really upset that I missed it, cause she said she was going to sing an Angela Aki song, and I'm in luff with Angela Aki.

The only other event that I really, really, really liked was the Japanese Street Fashion Show. That was a lot of fun. They had a bunch of people in typical Japanese street fashion styles. They had Fruits or Decora, which they described as being like a rainbow exploded in your face. They wear lots and lots of layers, lots and lots of accessories, big bulky jewelry, all that jazz. Lots of fun. Then they had EGL and EGA (Elegant Gothic Aristocratic and Elegant Gothic Lolita), you know, all the fancy gothy dressy stuff. And they had ganguro and yamamba, which are the tan fashion-trendy girls, and the deep-fried panda chicks. It was way fun.

Now, normally at cons I don't hang in the screening rooms for long, because there are better things to do than sit and watch anime, cause I could do that at home any time, right? But MTAC had a supreme lack of things to do, so I ended up in the screening room a couple times, and there are two anime I must recommend.

Anime number one is Yamato Nadesico Shichi Henge. The English name is Perfect Girl Evolution. It's so ridiculously absurd and random and hilarious. It makes fun of every anime and bishounen stereotype in the world, and it's greatness in a can. When we sat down and started watching it, we thought, "Okay, great, it's a pretty-boy school-girl anime, whatever..." and then ten minutes later we were in tears laughing. It has the most random, weird jokes EVER. I only got to see two episodes, but it definitely caught my attention, and I'm gonna get my hands on more.

The other one is equally funny, but in a different way. It's called Nodame Cantabile. It's beautifully animated, and the music is gorgeous. It's an anime about music, really. Guy plays piano and violin, but wants to be a composer. He's scared of travelling, though, so he's stuck on Japan. And right when he's losing his motivation and about to give up, he meets this girl, Nodame, who plays piano. Again, I only got to see two episodes, but I'm already in love. It's gorgeous. And if you like or appreciate or play classical music, you will absolutely adore it. The interaction between the characters is freaking hilarious, too. It has it's sweet, touching, serious moments, and then five minutes later you'll be out of breath from laughing.

And now for something completely different.

Con pictures! We took a bunch of them, so I'll just link the important ones. I was the one behind the camera most of the time, so there aren't very many pictures of me, and none of them with me in my costume. Me and my friends did Pheonix Wright this year. Chip was Phoenix Wright, Rob was Edgeworth, and I was Maggie Byrd, the cute little cop from the beginn...

How about you?

I'll get internet working on my own computer one of these years. Until then, I am abusing the hell out of my mom's thumb drive getting pictures and photos and references back and forth between our computers since we don't have the help of a network.

The one thing that I miss most of all from my lack of internet is the fact that Doctor Who premired in Britain already, and I can't download the new episode! It's awful!

But! If you're into comic books, there are two things you MUST pick up this week. Incredible Hulk this week leads directly into World War Hulk in which Hulk returns to Earth to smash some brains in.

Also, surprisingly, The Avengers Initiative is REALLY good. I mean REALLY good. An excellent way to start off a new series. I loved it. The end was completely and totally unexpected. Definitely worth reading.

Ugh. Okay. So our Charter internet providers screwed us over royally, so we broke up. End of that relationship. Our new Bellsouth high-speed net works like a dream, but neither my mom nor I know how to set up the wireless network between our computers. So the only computer in the house with internet right now is my mom's. Yippee skippy.

So! Even though I really want to redraw my Can I Take Your Picture? comic, I can't, because I lack the necessary internet on my computer to research reference photos for the backgrounds and stuff so I can do it right the way I want to.

And! Even if I was drawing anything else (which I'm not) I wouldn't be able to upload it to dA, because all my art is on my computer, which, hey, has no internet.

So! All I really can do is tell you to go watch TMNT. That movie is excellent. It's corny and funny and humorous with some kickass fight scenes and all the cheesy goodness we should expect from classic Ninja Turtles. This, my friends, is the way Ninja Turtles are meant to be done. I did feel kinda bad for Donatello, though. He only had like five lines the whole movie. Poor guy. Turtle.

P.S. I got a wicked-cute haircut the other day, which means new devID as soon as I have internetage.

Whoo! I finally got my new Wacom Tablet in the mail!

My old Graphire 3 broke down a week or so ago. The cord leading out of it got really really loose, and it had to be held in place with duct tape or it would constantly be disconnecting. And the cable had to be turned the wrong way so it was always in my way, and I'd trip over it and knock it on the ground, which I'm sure didn't make the situation any better. So! I got a new one!

Unfortunately, I got this tablet with my Wii money. So even if I was able to FIND a Wii, now I wouldn't be able to GET it.

But! I love my new tablet! The Intuos that I wanted was out of stock, and I really couldn't wait for them to get it back IN stock, so I just upgraded my Graphire to a Graphire 4. It's silver, too, so now it matches my computer (which is all black and silver). And I went ahead and got an inking stylus for it, too. So it's all pretty and shiny and new and has all kindsa nifty stuff the Graphire 3 didn't have so YAY.

And! It came with Corel Painter Essentials. So not the full version of Painter, but I get some of the capabilities of the program. My last tablet came with an older version of Painter, and then I lost the disk so when I went to install it on my new computer, I didn't have it anymore. So I was without Painter when I really wanted to play around with it. But now I have it again! And a much better version, easier to understand and figure out where everything is. I'm definitely going to be playing around with that more later.

On a not-so-artistic train of thought, the other day I went and bought Pajama Sam 1: No Need to Hide When it's Dark Outside, Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren't so Frightening, and Blazing Dragons. I beat all three games in two days. It only took two hours each for the Pajama Sam games. I remember them being a lot harder when I was 8. Huh.

But Blazing Dragons was greatness in a can. I never remembered playing the whole game. I had this little memory of when I was younger of playing a game with a dragon inventor who had to rescue the dragon princess, and that was it. And I suddenly got this urge to find that game and play it. And so I found it, bought it, played it, loved it, beat it. It was greatness. So funny! It has this excellent Monty Python-esque humor through the whole game. Brilliant, I tell you. Brilliant.

So, for those of you who have been living under a rock the past two days, Captain America has died. After Civil War ended, Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) was shot several times on his way to the courthouse for his public trial. He was shot through the neck by a sniper, and then at point-blank in the stomach by a female S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who appeared to be acting under mental or psychic influence from an outside source.

Working at a comic book store, I'm privy to some stuff you may not be aware of. So let me answer some of the questions I got asked about twenty million times today.

Is Steve Rogers really dead?

Yes. Steve Rogers was proclaimed dead upon arrival at the hospital. Marvel comics has stated that Steve Rogers is DEAD. The end.

Seriously??

Yes.

Does that mean no more Captain America?

Steve Rogers will no longer be Captain America, but they're going to put someone else in the suit. So there will still be a Captain America, but it won't be Steve Rogers anymore. Kind of like how Robin has been Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake.

Who's going to be the new Captain America?

That hasn't been decided yet. Some people are thinking S.H.I.E.L.D. will find an agent to stuff in there, some people think Tony Stark (Iron Man) will find someone so he'll have his own puppet. I'd like to think Bucky (Winter Soldier) will take the job. It would be fitting for Captain America's former sidekick and best friend to take up the shield with Steve Rogers dead.

The Punisher should be Captain America!!

Okay, yeah, in the final issue of Civil War, The Punisher picked up Captain America's mask from the ground. That doesn't mean Punisher is going to be Captain America. He is completely the wrong kind of person. Captain America doesn't kill unless he has to. Punisher just kinda kill everybody. Cap is all about Justice and Freedom and America. Punisher is just about vengeance and shooting people all over the place. Punisher is NOT going to be the new Captain America, so stop being stupid. He'll just hand off the mask to the new Cap, probably.

Wait, Captain America's not really dead, right?

Yes he is. Dead as a doorknob.

Yeah that's what they said when they killed Superman, and he came back a year later.

He came back, yeah. But he WAS dead. Very dead. But we all know how super heroes never manage to stay dead for very long.

So does that mean Steve Rogers is coming back?

Probably. It's not going to be like, "Steve Rogers from an alternate universe finds his way here" kinda thing. That's not how Marvel works. Steve Rogers will be dead for a year or two, and then they'll bring him back. It won't be magic. It won't be another universe. It won't be time travel. None of that hokey magic DC stuff. Superboy won't punch a wall and bring people back to life.

Then how will Steve Rogers come back?

I've been sworn to secrecy. My boss at work knows how it'll happen, and he told me, and I read the story, and I agree that if Marvel brought him back that way, it would be the COOLEST story ever written. Civil War would be nothing compared to that story line. I can't tell you what it is, though, because if Marvel gets wind that too many people know, they might change it.

Aw, tell me!

Sorry, occupational oath of silence.

Can I have a hint?

There's a story Marvel put out about three years ago. They stressed several times that the story IS in continuity. If you read that story, you'll know how Steve Rogers comes back. It is absolutely amazing. Trust me.

And that's all I have to say about that.

In the meantime, look forward to World War Hulk! Hulk was tricked into being blasted into space by Reed Richards and the Illuminati. He was supposed to be sent to a world of nothing but plants where he could live in peace for the rest of his life. But something happened, and he ended up on an inhabited planet. They worshipped him like a God for a while. But now Hulk found out what the heroes back on Earth did to him. And boy is he pissed. Just wait till he finds a way back home. Heads will get crushed and Hulk will smash in World War Hulk! Coming this summer to a comic store near you!

P.S. If you want to read Captain America #25 where he dies, good luck with that. Everyone is sold out everywhere. It's going on eBay for over $75 already because no one anticipated this. My advice? Wait two weeks. They'll come out with the second printing of the comic. It won't be worth as much money in ten years, but you get the same exact story. Be patient.

So! Great news! I pulled a muscle in the bottom of my foot!

..wait, wrong news.

Good news! We finally moved into our new house! After three days of driving constantly, carrying boxes WAY too heavy for me, and dealing with stupid-as-all-hell Rent-a-Center guys, we are FINALLY moved into our new house. It's about twenty minutes away from the crappy apartment we just left, which means I'll have about a half hour drive to work everyday. But I've driven so damn much these last couple days, that that 30-minute drive is a piece of cake.

Okay, so bad news. I pulled a muscle in the bottom of my foot! I'm not really sure how. Probably lifting something or stepping wrong on something or something. For the last two days of the move, and one more day after we were done, I could barely walk, and I still had to drive and carry stuff. So that was fun. I was pretty much useless for those couple days. Still hurts, but I can walk now at least. But I look funny cause I hafta waddle and hobble and limp everywhere. Sarah the one-legged penguin yaay.

We just got our internet turned on this morning. That means we have cable back, too. Mom's having a coworker come by later this week to get our network set up so I can move my computer into my own bedroom. I need to get a computer desk, though, and that might have to take a while.

My Wacom tablet is breaking, too. The cord running out of the table is extremely loose, and I have to keep it in place with a piece of tape, or it'll disconnect every two seconds. So that means instead of getting a Wii for my late birthday present, I'm going to be replacing my tablet. That is slightly more importnant. However! I'll be upgrading. I think I can talk my mom into getting me a 6x8 Wacom Intuos 3. Quite a step above my little Graphire 3. I'm gonna miss that little guy, though. Le sigh.

I haven't gotten any artwork done these last few days, for obvious reasons, but right before we left I started this really cool picture of Gojyo and Hakkai from Saiyuki, and I should finish inking that... um... soon... ish. Pretend to be surprised, though.

BUT! All I really have to say at the end of everything, is I love this house, I love the fact that I get my own studio, and I am so insanely glad to be out of those crappy little run-down apartments.

Wow.

At work tonight, I finished my novel, Furies of Calderon. Amazing book right there. I loved it and the characters and everything. But that was nothing compared to what I read next.

Marvel Comic's The Sentry trade paperback. Oh. My. God. That is amazing. It really is incredible! The story and the character development and the emotional artwork and everything just combine and create this fantastic story!

I don't cry at comics books. Never once has a comic book made me cry. This one nearly did. Twice. If I hadn't been sitting at work... If I was at home, reading this by myself, I would have cried. It is THAT moving. That compelling. Never before has a comic, especially an American mainstream superhero comic, drawn me in like that before.

It was the kind of book where, when you get to the last page, you close the cover, and you just stare at the book for a second. And then all you can say is, "Wow." Just "Wow". The Sentry is above and beyond any other superhero comic, or any other comic for that matter, that I have ever read.

The story isn't about beating up a bad guy or saving the world. It's an internal struggle with this character, right from page one. Forget the bright, bold colors so common in most superhero comics. The muted, desaturated, soft-painted colors perfectly fit the mood of the introspective, complicated, and heart-breaking story.

I really can't tell you what it's about, because not knowing what you're getting into is part of what makes the comic so intense and amazing. You're really just going to have to take my word for it. But a story that fantastic, that emotional, that rivetting... It blew me away. Completely. I couldn't even read anything else after that tonight because it was that good. Anything I could have read afterwards would pale in comparison. So I sat in my chair and just thought back on all the great mind-numbing complexities of the story for twenty minutes till I got off work.

Even if you don't read superhero comics... Even if you don't read American comics... Even if you don't read comics period... You must read this comic. It is that good. It is, without a doubt, my favorite comic book I have ever read. Nothing even comes close. And to have so much energy, so much emotion, in a six-issue mini-series is unbelieveable. You seriously have to read it to comprehend what I'm saying.

And I'm telling you now, Sentry is officially one of my favorite comic book superheroes ever.

Just wow.

Good News Numbah One
We're moving into a new house! Yay house! No more loud neighbors or gay guys having sex in the room right above me! The best thing in the whole wide world about this new house is that I get my own studio!! There are two tiny bedrooms on the bottom floor, and I get both of them! So one will be my bedroom, and the other will be my art studio! Hells yeah baby!!

Good News Numbah Two
This is half bad news, half good news. The bad half is, the 11x17 scanner I ordered forever ago never showed up. So we emailed the people and demanded our money back, cause it's been like 5 months since I ordered it and still haven't got it. But! With the money we get back from the scanner, my mom is getting me a Wacom Intuos3!! Gonna replace this old Graphire thing. Yay!
Good News Numbah Three
Now this news is only POTENTIALLY possible. It MIGHT happen. I HOPE it does. I THINK it will. If it DOES, it will be THE coolest thing IN THE WORLD. We're probably going to trade in the car I have right now, and use the cash from it as a down payment on a new car for me. I'll hafta do payments on it for five years, but it will totally be worth it. Why? Because the car I'm gonna get is a red PT Cruiser with flames up the front, a swirly radio antennea, and a retro 60s-diner-style dash. IF I get this car, his name will be Elvis Phillip Terrence Cruiser. Elvis for short.

So, for lack of anything to do, and for an excuse to get Christmas pictures off my front page, I'm gonna post some obscure pictures here in my journal that I don't post on dA. There are a few reasons why I don't put these in my gallery. Either they're just doodles, or they're just character designs, or they're comissions for customers at work, or I just don't think they're gallery-worthy, or they're scenes from role playing that no one else would understand anyway.
It's a lot of images, so it may take a while to load. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized image.
