*NB how on earth do I embed small thumbnails in these entries?*

Pleased to say I am working towards doing glamour shots and more people oriented shots with mystical, goth themes too.

Next year I'm hoping to hook up with stevepl [link] for a shoot or two to learn more on photographing natural nudes. I know many of his locations very well! Can't wait Steve

I have a beautiful friend PS who is happy for me to develop more glamourous style shots including her . Should be doing some shoots with her around Christmas: have been preparing a couple outfits and props, with some suitably cool, mysterious locations to shoot out. Ideally would like a little bit of fog for some I have mind!

We took a train journey together last week and the pendant she wore was catching the sunlight; she was happy for me to take photos, and having showed her around my DA last night for an hour+ was happy for me to put up these images. With future shoots, I'll be able to put up more with her agreement. We're going to have an awful lot of fun

Went to see "Watchmen" on Saturday night.

What an awesome film. Comparable with, perhaps even beyond "The Matrix" for its visual appeal, fights, and exploration of existential issues.

Great costumes, effects, attention to detail, philosphy, ethics. It's 2 hrs 42 mins long, but I didn't look for the time once. It is violent and somewhat disturbing in the context of the potential awfulness of humanity which it explores (including a near rape scene).

Absolutely superb and mind expanding. I haven't felt such a mental rush after a film since seeing The Matrix. One to think about again and again. Once I've read up some more on the characters and the thought behind it, I think a repeat viewing may be in order.

There's a good soundtrack too (80s, 60s, and the incidental music), and as a fan of hair, one of the principal lady characters has awe inspiring between breast and waist length hair which remains perfect even during 'Matrix' style fight scenes!

I want a t-shirt, poster and director's cut special edition DVD now!

Science Fiction at its best, working visually, intelligently. Super.

Got back just after midnight from a family trip to Edinburgh in the first part of the week, and then a 36 hour visit to York. Many photos taken, of course. Wonderful buildings, eerie graveyards, dazzling cityscapes, trains, Anglo Saxon, Viking and Norman re-enactors.

Not sure when I'll get around to putting the photos up - catching up with everything which needs to be caught up with when coming back from going away. I also need to throw some serious time and effort to my business and get the pounds and pennies coming in again in ernest.

I look forward to further sharing my photographer's eye for those who would be interested

Cheers

Was out with both my cameras today for 40 mins - the litte Nikon Coolpix 5200 and the bigger 8800.

The big one definitely is not working right.

Anything zoomed in on other 'as you see it' before zoom, or settings other than full automatic will generate blurred shots. Otherwise, you may be lucky.

That explains why I've either grained, soft focussed or heavily coloured some shots from the St Mary's Rostherne pics - just to make sure I've got something large to keep.

Can't afford a new camera at the moment, though have been sorely tempted by the Canon PowerShot SX10; my wife has a lower of the range which I have been very impressed with, and it takes brilliant portrait photos.

So, yes - my camera is definitely poorly. It's like having an impaired eye. In time it will get addressed and sorted.

Maybe 1000 images *this* month?

I didn't get to do much else in January. It was an extraordinarily crap month, lots of bother, problems, stresses. I hope to never revisit those again.

I also moved into a 'new' office at home, having spent the last 3 years working, relaxing and sleeping within about the same 9 foot by 9 foot by 9 foot cube... it wasn't very healthy.

So, I've got a room now for work - which is good; but it's like moving house, and my 'office things' which were spread between our bedroom, the landing alcove, outside the bathroom door and the garage have come into one area - so LOADS of sorting to do.

There was also the tax return...

That meant I didn't have the time to add more images... I'll work on that this month!

My main camera definetly isn't working; fired off a load of images of snow this morning - *every* one out of focus; so I'm using the old coolpix 5500 for the moment, selotape and all, holding it together. To be without a camera is to be without an eye,

Perhaps I need to be looking for a new main camera. Hmmmmn.

‘The Roads & Trackways of North Wales’, a new book, does just that.

Collage Pictures Link [link]

Driving along the A5 from Chirk to Anglesey, are a succession of signs stating that the road is a ‘Historic Route’. This book shows that the A5 is a comparative newcomer, with many others in North Wales which are ten – twenty times older.

Some of the roads were pre-historic when they were utilised by the Romans and two thousand years on, still remain in use.

The packhorse way being succeeded by the cart, coach and motor vehicle, in many cases preserves a route-way that had its origins in pre-history. The old road from Rowen to Aber – Bwlch Y Ddeufaen, or the pass of two stones – still has the two huge way-markers as well as a cromlech at the side of the roadway.

Author Tim Prevett begins the book looking at the evidence for such old roads and then moves on to examine the Roman roads, pilgrims’ routes, drovers’ roads and subsequent highways up to the turnpikes, including Telford’s A5, the London to Holyhead route for Dublin-bound travellers.

He has carefully included lots of maps and photographs to illustrate the text. They make it much easier to understand the locations he describes. There is a lot packed into the book’s 160pp and it is competitively priced at £14.99.

With its eye-catching cover of sheep still using the Bwlch Y Ddeufaen route, the author shows us how much of our heritage we can easily take for granted and how much of our countryside has been shaped by our forefathers and mothers.

*[link]
If buying, click the Amazon link on my website which will earn me commission on the book sale.
Future Appointments Required

Well, really couldn't have had a much better day I guess.

I needed to return a library book to Audley just over the border into Staffordshire. Audley is an intriguing village with a big mining history. The morning sunshine was strong, and having returned overdue and unrenewable library book, we got some sweets and went and sat on a big low tomb in the churchyard. Defoliating trees were around us in various shades and hues, and the light was just brilliant.

A slow walk down to some fields brought us across some bods doing archery practice which occupied our attention for a while, before walking a little further, and then returning home for delicious lunch.

After a short break and making up my mind where to take us, we set out. We lost the sunshine, but still had a wonderful time. One of my favourite churches in Cheshire is at Church Lawton (love the vibe there; it is undeniably put there because of its relationship with the land and what must have been there previously), and is perched on a sizeable mound, but I'd never explored the woodland around it. The route took us 4/5 through woodland and the last section through a field.

As we got further into the trees the sense of 'The Other' increased hugely. It was dizzying. I felt so alive and reverberating. Senses sharpened. There was a huge lake with surface algae. Trees defoliating around and upon us. It must be a reclaimed quarry forming a large bowl in the landscape, as the rim upon which we walked had trees towering above us, the far rim had trees stretching even higher - but the bowl below us had trees of immense stature which didn't even reach our level.

We bumped into a gentleman lobbing sticks for two dogs down an embankment in excess of 45 degrees steep, and the dogs came back craving more. It was such a spectacle to see, and we were peeing ourselves laughing so much. One of the dogs (called Anubis) twice tried to pull a branch off a tree to have fun with. Completely psyched up looney dog in his element bent only on enjoying the pursuit and retrieval of sticks.

Early in the conversation mainly between myself and the gentleman, it turns out he's a solitary Druid (Hedge Druid is the term; my LJ user name is a partial play on that idea, as well as a nickname from a corrupted form of my surname given me as a leader on Hants & Dorset Christian Youth Camps in 1990 and 1991), as well as Countryside Ranger. He articulated the subtleties of the locale I had felt, and I sensed a real kindred spirit. It felt sort of like The Universe had enabled the crossing of our paths today, perhaps. Whatever the case, I was and am grateful, and felt even more thrilled.

I'll be returning to that location again at different times. Overwhelming in its ambience and given better light, even more photogenic than today.

Good to see work working for you and for your clients

Very pleasing to see some of my commercial work now being used; the event I covered on Sunday should have some of my shots in the press this week, and this shot here which I took as part of generating an image library for the area back in February is used in the publicity leaflets around the county and country - the top right in the above scan. Very satisfying.
A few days of media and political circus...

I know every week is arguably unique, but this has to be among the most unique weeks of our town's life in its 170 years. Media and politicians from around the country are piling in for the scramble in one of the most important Parliamentary by elections for some time. I'm having a ball covering the campaigns subject to other commitments. I could be in a studio audience for Channel 4 News on Tuesday evening too, possibly asking questions... ooer! So, my usual coverage of places is temporarily replaced by the hosts of media, politicians and celebs pouring into town... exciting time.
