Welcome to the first in a series of many interviews of selected *Shutter-Scene members! These interviews are a result of =Bamsen's droodling with ideas after we finished the contest. I will "interview" active members of our small community, and try to keep it updated once pr week!

So! To be fair and square I thought I'd start off with the selected few that are in the back, trying to run this club as smooth as possible. I'm of course talking about the admins! So without further ado I'd like to introduce to you =Kamo7s ! He's one of our latest additions to the admin-crew and he's also pretty fresh when it comes to photography in general, so I thought it'd be interesting to hear his thoughts about both clubbing here on dA and so on.


Introduce yourself please, who is the man behind the nickname?:

My name is Tom Elkin. I'm 37 years old. I live in St. Louis, MO, USA... "The Gateway to the West" and home of the infamous Gateway Arch.

For how long have you been a member of dA?:

I've been a dA member since April 2006.

How did you discover the whole concept of clubs? And what do you think of them?:

It wasn't until earlier this year that I discovered clubs. I joined a couple of fractal clubs even though I can't create a decent looking fractal to save my life.

Why did you decide to become an admin, and why shutter-scene?:

I had been a member of shutter-scene for a few weeks when I saw a journal entry calling out for admins. I wanted to do something to give back to the community and decided this would be my starting point. So I sent in my "application" and was happy to be accepted as the newest admin of Shutter-Scene.

I kinda take it for granted that your favorite medium is photography, but do you have any other mediums you work in?

I dabble in graphic arts, mainly creating wallpapers for widescreen monitors. I got started doing forum signatures. I've done 100s of those, but I haven't posted but a few of them on my dA site.

For how long have you been into photography?

Actually, only since May of this year. I've wanted a good camera for a while to replace the point-and-shoot digital I have. I saw a sale on a Canon Digital Rebel XT and decided to jump on it before the sale expired. I'm still very much a beginner, but I'm learning and trying to teach myself. Lucky for me DeviantART is here, there is an abundance of information on here to help someone just starting out.

And why photography? Why not painting, drawing, etc? What is so special about photography?

To be totally honest, much like the fractals I mentioned earlier, I can't draw worth a darn. I have ideas in my head, but when it comes to putting them on paper or a canvas, the ideas get rerouted from my brain to my hand. As I said in my journal this week, Photography has allowed me to see the world differently. I realized recently when I was driving around St. Louis, that I don't look at run-down buildings as eyesores as much anymore as I do a photo opportunity.

Do you have any plans/ambitions to take your photographic career any further than just a hobby thing?

I would like to, but as I said I'm still learning. I've had a lot of compliments on my work, but I don't think it's as good as it could be. I still have a lot to learn...

Who are your greatest influences?

As far as photography goes, my influences are mostly here on dA. They all have different styles too. Here's a short list!

Has being a member of dA helped you in any way to become a better artist? And if so, how?

Oh yes, being a member of dA is what inspired me to purchase the camera in the first place. So doing features a little different this time, I did a mini interview with them and I was going to edit their responses into a paragraph, but I think it's more interesting to read it as an interview...so enjoy

CN: Umm nothing too special.. just trying to get better at photography.

SS: When did you first become interested in photography?
CN: I was interested since I was little and I always imagined photos in my head and I had lots of ideas, but I didn't have a camera.

SS: What are your future goals and aspirations? (brief -art related or not)
CN: Well, I would really like to get better and better at photography. Alsom I have a pretty irrational dream of building an animal shelter to help stray animals as much as possible.

SS: Working on anything right now? (any projects? learning a new technique?)
CN: Right now I'm trying to work with models and I also have other ideas for photos.. I always have lots of ideas...the hardest part is to make them.

Just to let all the members know - We are now doing submitting by collections, like some of your other favorite clubs! And right now are submissions are kind of low, so if you don't see your work right away, it's just because we are waiting until we get a full page too screenshot.
Also, when we add your work to our collections it does send you a message, so that way you know we got your note! Also, there is really no need for you to send us a thank your for the fav/collection - because it was your monthly submission!

Hey everyone, we are back up and running. Have been for awhile...but we are lacking the submissions we once had (obviously to be expected).

So I thought that we'd have a little theme submission. Now you can submit this in addition to your normal monthly submit AND you can submit as many as you would like! Contest time!

And the theme is...*drumroll* .... "Change" ! Thanks to ~candygirling for the suggestion!

You are all free to interpret the word as you want and you can submit under any category (as long as you keep it under photography of course ). The photo have to be submitted AFTER june 1'st (after all we do want you to actually go out and do something to win, not just submit something you've got laying around in your gallery.) And thats pretty much all the rules there is when it comes to what you're allowed to submit to the contest!

So basically this means the contest is now officially started! So when you're ready to submit send the thumb/link to my PERSONAL account =Bamsen (this just makes it SO much easier for me to manage ) And put "contest" in the subject field. You've all got until June 30'th (23:59 GMT+1) to send me your submissions!

The winner will be picked by a set of judges, which will be announced as soon as they're all sorted out

Oh, and we'd still appreciate any kind of donations when it comes to prizes!

Hi people!

Seems like we're back up running like never before, which is good! But please, DO NOT FAV CLUB DEVIATIONS! This creates heaps of unnecessary work for the admins, and we'd really appreciate it if you'd just go straight to the original deviant's work and add your 'es there! New members, you might want to read over the submission guidelines which can be found here: [link]

In other news, it seems like we've got the admin problem sorted for now. We have several people trying out as admins now, and it seems to be going really well! So please don't hesitate to send in your submissions!

And last but not least, we had a poll going regarding a new contest arranged by the club. And I'd just like to thank all of you for the feedback, it's really helpful! I'll probably come up with a decision regarding the theme over the weekend, and I'll make sure to post the rules and all that jazz as soon as they are ready.

We do need some prizes though! So if anyone would like to donate anything as a prize we would REALLY appreciate it (please send me a note to my personal account ( =Bamsen ) if you've got something to contribute with )

Okay, I have a fix for now...or maybe for a long while. I did find something in the FAQs about there being a limit to how many icons you could post in a block...so I just omitted them all together. Instead there is a link to our devwatch list.

Okay guys...I cannot get our member list to work for the life of me...is there a limit to how many icons you can have or something? cause I get so far and then it won't let me add more...it shows up in the journal preview just fine, but when i acutally update the journal...nothing!
So - any ideas? just let us know please! I haven't given up hope yet! lol

So, it didn't seem like many were interested in a contest....so i just made us a new one.

and please tell me what you think. overkill on the blue? i think a tad, but what other color can I use? Depending on the size of your screen you may or may not see the blueish/greenish [teal?] gradient in the header....that's why everything else is a similar color.

Now I'm not going to change the color scheme completely, b.c well to be honest...the whole ordeal is a pain in my busy behind. But maybe we could add in another color or something? maybe change the color of the boxes...or mess with the text and the link colors?

First off, we know that "Summer Lovin'" isn't the exact theme you chose, but your top two were loneliness and love. And both those can be applied here. Remember this theme isn't just love, it's summer romance and all that it implies.

okay, so no entries for the CSS contests, but that is most likely b.c our members are photographers!
So! for now this will be our CSS, AND we will now have a photography contest for you guys!

First of all - you all should go over to 's journal and check out her LIP LOVER'S CONTEST

Second of all - it's the last day for the contest!! Any last submissions...get them in! Now this was our first contest....so of course there will be a couple small problems.
1. WAY too many submissions...it will make the voting hard. [Solution: Shorter contest time, possibly only 1 submit per person]
2. Having a fair form of voting. [Solution: Have a panel of judges]

VOTING
Because we have soooo many entries and b.c I am the only admin who didn't enter [thus will be handling the voting alone] I am going to handle the voting alone. As of right now there are 141 entries. Insane I know. SO for voting I think the entries will be divided into groups of...10-15 and you just vote for your favorite of each group. Then we will have a top 10 and have a another final vote from that.

Any more prize donations?? please? something small even. It doesn't have to cost money, it can be a feature in your journal, or an interview in your journal...umm....maybe a commissioned piece for the winner/s. IF you aren't poor, it could also be one of your prints (those are pretty cheap) or even a 1 month sub. Our prizes are just pretty wimpy right now...so please if you can, donate a prize!!

Portrait Contest!
This theme was suggested by our admin =Bamsen and I liked it so...here we go

Rules!!

First and foremost, the entry must be a photographic portrait! AND Wikipedia says..."A portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artistic representation of a person or object. The intent is to show the basic appearance of the person or object, and occasionally some artistic insight into his or her personality (if a person)....."

You also MUST be a member to participate, so if you aren't...Join us!!

Each member may submit up to 2 entries! Send us a note titled "Portrait Contest" (please be sure to do that, it helps us keep our inbox organized!) with a link to your entry/entries.

It cannot be a deviation that you have already submitted to our club.

No photo manipulations please.

It would be nice to have links on the top or bottom or side or somewhere... about 4 or 5 links that we can customize.

We recieved a comment asking what CSS was...so I tracked down a free css template...and put it here. This is one idea of how our new super cool CSS Journal could look. BE INSPIRED!

Sorry for being behind on submissions - I am doing my best. It's harder to keep up than I thought it would be - which is why I've decided I need help...anyone interested in being an administrator? I think I will probably just take on one or two at the most. This way we can get the club rolling with contests and features and such.

SO, if you are interested in being an admin, then send a note to my personal account, *fraggle37, with "Admin" in the subject line. Please, tell me a bit about yourself. You don't need to give me where you live or anything, but a name would be nice, and maybe how old you are - that sort of thing. It'd also be nice to know what your interests are also, b.c I'd like to find someone who I am somewhat compatible with. Also, include an approx. amount of time you would be able to spend on the club. (NOTE: don't feel the need to say a lot, just be honest. This will not affect whether or not you will be chosen, it will just allow me to decide how many admin's i need)


OH! and I will be putting up more of your submissions...but the last three I added don't seem to be showing up. SO, I am going to wait for a bit...b.c I don't want to be resubmitting everything.
