I've been off DA for an epic amount of time...feels like I haven't spoken to any of you guys in forever. How has your holiday been? School? Work? Drawing? Really...what's the best thing you've done lately?
I will be submitting multiple sketches and deleting several of my old works. Expect some random stuff...that's all I've had time for.
Over the break, it is my goal to actually do something for myself. I will be applying for scholarships and to colleges, but I WILL be drawing as well. Winter break is supposed to be a BREAK, and I'm determined to make it one.
Anyway, hope all of you are having an awesome winter break (if you have one). Go do something radical...like trying to walk outside barefoot in 14 degree weather (I did that...I had to take the dog out). Go try something new (I tired stuffed mushrooms on the 18th...mmmm...stuffed mushrooms ). Go write essays without parallel structures (because I'm writing one right now). GO FORTH AND CONQUER!

I found out on the 2nd that I had swine flu (*gasp*) and pneumonia. Yeah yeah, the swine flu bit sucks, but the pneumonia...if you're going to go get yourself sick, don't get pneumonia. It's not friendly. Really.
I hope this journal doesn't generate any "Oh! I'm sorry! That's sucks! Get better!" kind of get well comments. By the time I was diagnosed I was already getting over it.
Sooooooo....
I'm pretty much "not allowed" to draw. My parents want me to spend every waking moment applying for scholarships. Don't get me wrong, scholarships are helpful, but I'm tired of not being able to draw. Heck, I even have that glittering bauble INSPIRATION and I'm not allowed to draw, and God knows I'm NEVER have inspiration.
Just trying to drag through. I'm hoping the fog clears soon.

I've got art...finally!
I've gotten over my writer's and artist's block...I'm a writing and sketching fiend now. I blame it on the nice weather.
I've definitely got at least one color drawing on the way...will be a watercolor. Should be posted up here in in about a week and a half...keep teh eyes peeled (I'll be NICE...and I mean REALLY nice)

So.
I'm sure you've all noticed (ok...maybe you didn't) that I've been submitting mostly lineart, and pretty much all of it has to do with Kirae. There's a reason for this...
Here's my (lame) excuse:
I've been writing my book (-Kirae-) when I have spare time. (i.e: I haven't been drawing). It makes me a little depressed, but I just don't have any time to sit down and finish inking lineart right now (I blame it on homework and my book). My book is extremely important to me, and whenever I have a little extra time to write, I do. Whenever I have time to draw, I'm usually drawing things having to do with my book ("Tempus", "The Watcher", and "Pure" are all great examples). I greatly apologize that I haven't told you what my book is about...I'm just a little sensitive about some of the characters' names. Maybe one day...
For now, just bear with my insane amounts of lineart...I am working on other things *gasp!* and once school ends in June I'll have (hopefully) a lot of extra time.

What's going on in my life right now (besides my book and homework):
I just recently went on a trip (with my school's band) to New York...it was crazy awesome! I saw Wicked, which was an INCREDIBLE show (go see it...NOW!)...I also went to the Central Park Zoo, where I saw some AMAZING birds (Scarlet ibis, Nicobar pigeon, Bleeding-heart doves, weavers, Royal starlings, and many others). I hope to go again sometime...
I'm waiting for baby birds to show up at the wildlife rehab center I volunteer at...I hope to see a baby heron. (soooo cute!)

I've been studying for multiple tests (which have been coming at me like rapid fire), and haven't had a lot of time to draw. I apologize profoundly to those of you who have been waiting for a drawing from me...its not that I'm avoiding them, but that I get out a sheet of blank bristol-like paper, stare at it for 15 or so minutes, draw a few lines, then erase them. All of my inspiration has been shot. Its not that I'm not thinking about all the drawings I need to do, its just that I don't have much inspiration at the moment.
I've also been typing my book, -Kirae-, to keep my sanity. When I think about typing my book, I think of a very specific quote from Elie Wiesel (author of -Night- ): "Did I write it so as not to go mad or, on the contrary, to go mad in order to understand the nature of madness, the immense, terrifying madness...?" If you can expect any drawings from me right now, they will most likely be of, or relating to, Kirae...you've been warned.
But...
I have been drawing other things. Right now, as of this very moment, I have an Riike pencil line-art piece in my drawing drawer. I expect to ink it sooner or later.
Just as an interesting side note that has nothing to do with anything (sort of)...
In case you were all wondering...
'Riike' is pronounced: Air-EE-kee-eh, 'Maar' is pronounced: Meer-AH-air, 'I'irik' is pronounced: ee ' ee-air-ee-kee-eh, and 'Riku' is pronounced: Air-EE-kee-oo'ah.

I really don't get to do a lot of drawing, and when I do, I'm mostly doing drawings for myself (i.e to relieve stress).
I've decided not to complain anymore in my journals...but you may what to know what I've been up to...
Most of my time is dedicated to Marching Band. Yeah yeah, I know...it sounds nerdy, but I LOVE it. Only people who have been in Marching Band would understand how passionate I feel about it...I'm also in a local Symphony Orchestra, so that I get to play really hard stuff Flute and piano lessons further help my better my skills.
I'm in both AP English and US History...so I have homework almost every day (doesn't everyone? )
I'm also in Girl Scouts, where I get to help around the community...my freshman year I painted a NW coast style kingfisher for a camp. (picture coming eventually)

Well...that basically sums it up...
If you feel like complaining about your busy lifestyle, I'd love to hear about it!

I've met lots of great animals there. They all have different personalities!
For example (gets into rambling mode...)
Athena. Our resident Great Horned Owl....she hisses at me every single time I walk by her aviary.
Or Bear, our resident Bobcat.
He's such a sweetheart! You can go up and pet him as if he was you own golden retriever. His purring....it's like a semi truck!
Freedom the bald eagle...loves to talk when you walk by her aviary.
Eya the education barn owl...I twittered at her and she flew right down to me, and twittered back.

But, the crows are my favorite.
They may be loud, and never seem to quit eating, but they have such great personalities. Each crow you feed is different. Some crows like to try to fly out of the cage, others sit and be quite, staring at you with their bright blue eyes.

If you have a center in your area, and you LOVE wild animals, go volunteer! Get dirty! Go CRAZY!

(Yes, I did have fun even cleaning cages...I got to hold little baby jays...they have the most amazing blue eyes ).
However, there are some things about rehab that are pretty depressing....it's a little sad when you go out to the so called "dead animal freezer" and you see a duckling, or a crow, or a little baby rabbit that you had cared for the week earlier out there. But, maybe I'm just over emotional.
It's also depressing to see a new animal come in, the people who found it holding their child's hand, and to see them smiling. They expect the animal(s) they brought in to live, and it's really sad when the child wants to know what will happen, when the animal (usually a bird), has suffered severe head trauma, and will die within 20 minutes.
However, it's not all sad...I do get to care for many animals that are bound for release, and it makes me feel good that while I may go deaf feeding screeching little starling chicks, that they will most likely be able to be released.

Now, you are most likely wondering...what about the squirrels this journal is titled for...
I used to be so ignorant that I once believed that squirrels were cute, fuzzy and friendly little animals that would hop about in your backyard.
Boy was I wrong.

I learned that besides large carnivores (like bears, coyote, or raccoons), squirrels are the most likely animal to bite you and make you bleed! Yes! Those cute little animals are VICIOUS!!!
I once underfed a young squirrel, and it got so pissed off that it ran up and bit my hand!
They growl too, and look not unlike a really angry teacup poodle that would like nothing better than to bite your face off!


Well, enough ranting...I need to go study history for an exam...

Finishing the Riike project...have to do a Chief and a Pilot.
Finishing a Kket portrait for Konsumbrot.
Starting a 2 year old belated gift piece for superchipmunk.
Starting an Elite project.
Doing a project based off of some dragons I made up in 5th grade (see my scraps...sun and moon.)
Doing a gift piece for a good friend of mine.

And maybe some other random beastie drawings...

Now to the interesting stuff (in my opinion).
A little background on Elites first...
Elites can have thousands of genetical mutations that affect color, anatomy, and the works. However, they are all just plain nasty, and are extremely intelligent.

With this in mind, I need a few ideas for these mutations and if any of you guys could give me a few, or better yet, draw your own Elite version, just send me a note or leave a message if you are interested.

ENGLISH HOMEWORK!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!! The horror! *runs away and hides* - *dog barks in distance*

I have to do a 'life-map' of the person I read my biography on. I read about Bill Reid, the amazing NW coast style artist.
My life map is in the native style, which always has made me feel a little uncomfortable because I'm not native, and I always feel like I am breaking a dozen or so rules while doing it.
However, I'm quite proud of how it is looking so far; it is my most detailed native art drawing ever to date, and is crazily complex.
It consists of 9 figures total, all representative of Bill Reid's incredible life.
However, it is taking a painstakingly long amount of time to draw.
The Uniball micro size pens I am using don't work to well on marker paper, and I need to do two coats of ink for it to look nice.

So...yeah...not much else happening. I hope to have some more stuffs on here soon (whatever that means!)

I had been working on a very complex and LARGE drawing (just because I wanted to), and it needs to be photographed to view the whole thing (no, it's not THAT large, only about 16'' by 24'' give or take).
And just to make things even more difficult, there is a problem with my computer, and I can't scan anyway.
I hope to have things up and running again soon...

You won't be disappointed with this new piece. I'm quite proud of it
It will most certainly have a LONG description, so BEWARE!!!!

There were about 260 participants, and what I noticed was most of them were flute players; I was one of them.
I played 5 things - Mozart's 2nd Concerto for Flute (III movement), a trio by James Hook (odd name huh?!), the first trio of Haydn's London Trios (with a bassoon), a duet by Kulau, and another duet by Kulau. I had to play all of these things within 3 hours.
This in itself was A LOT of music (any flute player's out there would know...especially if you've ever played Kulau or Mozart). Not only did I have to play about 45 minutes worth of music, but we were judged too! This puts a lot of stress on all of the musicians. The good thing is, if we earn a 'superior' rating (a 1 or 1+) then we go to state.
However, there was a play off between the small woodwinds groups. (If you want to know what woodwind instruments are...Google it, it's a little complex to put here).
What ended up happening was that 4 of my five pieces were picked for this play off (we play in front of the judges again, and out of the 7 pieces they choose one to go to state), and I had to play...you guessed it...4 MORE TIMES! AHHHHHHHH!
None of my pieces went to state, but we placed 3rd in the playoff
So, I played 9 times that day, and my lips still hurt.

And just to top it off, it was my birthday too.... (please don't bombard me with comments about it...it was a day to celebrate music for me)


It was a tiring experience that lasted all day, and required a lot of energy.
The good thing is, I learned from this; NEVER do 5 things at solo and ensemble EVER AGAIN!

I am SO sorry to all of those who like to see me do more Riike, Akire', dragon, or other related lineart drawings. I have been excessivly busy and have had NO time to do anything worth putting on here. I have to do gift art for a few of my friends, and I also have to do some artwork for school (not art class...I've never taken an art class in my life...). (If you must probe, its for my German 2 class...)
For all those who enjoy me putting new stuff on here...stay calm...I'm working on some new stuff, and hope to have a dragon color drawing, a lineart bird drawing, and perhaps a few random dragons and Akire`.

For all your Riike fans (are there many???)...don't expect a lot to be happening for them for a while...I have to draw dragons for now
The next Riike drawing up is an Air Force general...stay tuned (later)...

Fanart...um...yeah...I'm not even going to comment on how thats going *hides from people I need to do fanart for*

I hope you all have a GREAT winter break, because I know mine is going to be busy!
