Okay, begging for favors isn't something I normally do, but here goes. Sometime next month my DA subscription is going to end, right in the middle of December, when frankly the money for indulging myself with an ad-free, high speed environment just won't be there.

Therefore, my dear readers (both of you), if you've enjoyed reading my stories or laughing at my silly LOLCat pictures, I ask you to show you appreciation by donating. I'm not asking for a whole year's subscription from you, but I figure if I can convince twelve people to blow $5 each, I'd be set for another year.

In return... Well, I'm not a visual artist, so I can't make each donor a sketch. And my fandoms (Terinu, Bujold, obscure SF authors and so forth) really don't square with most other folks' fandoms, so I can't guarantee a drabble for each of you either. But if you've enjoyed some of what I've written in the past, and are looking forward to seeing what I do in the future (in between my working on an actual commercial novel), I ask that you at least think about showing your appreciation.

Thanks.

Update: Many, many thanks to and the other anonymous deviant who both gave me a three month subscription!

In this collection of the first three adventures written by Harry Harrison, we meet inerstellar con-man turn super spy, James "The Stainless Steel Rat" DiGriz, as he gives his life of crime (barely) to fight crime, and watch him booze, smoke and pill pop his way across the galaxy fighting interstellar evil.

Review: Another series that shows it age in certain ways (a female criminal in the 330th century? Shocking!) but overall holds together as good adventures.

Note, I said "adventure", not "comedy". There's a tendency to view the SSR books as a funny series, but I think that's a mistake. It's POV is certainly humorous. Jim DiGriz makes for an amusing companion, as he cheerily and egotisticaly dissects the boring, peaceful inhabitants of the planets he robs blind, but the situations he finds himself in are deadly serious, and he never forgets the consequences of failure.

Consider the three short novels in this collection:

The Stainless Steel Rat: DiGriz is recruited in the Special Corps, the galaxy's secret peacekeeping arm, and almost immediately goes on the hunt for a psychologicaly damaged mass murderess.

The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge: He has to stop a group of mysterious grey men who use their finely honed techniques of psycological torture (as in, making you believe you just had your hands cut off and reattached) to wage interstellar war.

The Stainless Steel Rat Save the World DiGriz has to stop a time travelling madmen from destroying the Special Corps by erasing the past, and along the way journeys to a nightmarish post-apocalypse Earth 20,000 years into our future.

Laugh a minute concepts they are, I tell ya.

I've been archive diving through Erfworld [link] the past couple of days at work. The concept is simple: Like Order of the Stick it's a fantasy story set in a world using rules mechanics that the characters are aware of (a computer turned based fantasy war game in this case, not a tabletop RPG.) Unlike OOTS it plays the concept mostly straight.

"I won't be a game piece. You hear me? I'm a player! FUCK YOU!"

Anyway, Parson Gotti (an anagram of "Protagonist") is an overweight, twenty-something gaming obsessed geek out of college and stuck with a car that's half dead and a lousy job at Kinkos. Until he gets pulled into Erfworld and is made "Lord Hamster", after being summoned by Overlord Stanley's minions who were seeking the Perfect Warlord to defend their city. It would seem they're really short on troops and hope, since the Royal Crown Coalition, led by Prince Ansom, is on the verge of taking their last city.

Mild problem: They also happen to be the bad guys.

Review: This is a story that digs its claws into you. It's easy to sympathize with Gotti. He might be (bluntly) overweight and unattractive, but he's smart and he does his research as he tries to figure out the world's rules, compelled by the loyalty spell that Stanley slapped on him as part of the summoning ritual. And it's a real war being fought, with real casualties, and real horrors. Which are made all the worse by the damned cutesy names and creatures (you don't die, you "croak", dragons are "dwagons", Ansom's main flying steeds are dried out Peeps, and his second in command is a cross between a vampire and The Fonz) It isn't long before Lord Hamster starts to figure out that maybe gaming the system isn't going to be as fun as he wants it to be.

It also didn't help that I heard about Micheal Jackson dying just before I got to this page. [link]

Just $15.15 for the trade paperback, or a cheap $6.25 for a PDF download!

From the back cover.

The Elf and the Beast

Betrayed, enslaved, and stripped of everything he owned, including the shirt on his back, the ancient elf called Tez finds himself bought by Maria the Beast-Kin, a woman who looks mostly human, but is really the product of a wizard's alchemy. While trying to discover what his eventual fate is to be, Tez finds himself drawn to the mystery of this wizard's familiar turned landed lady. What does she want with him, and why does she act far younger than she appears?

Together these two outcasts form a tentative alliance, and then a deep partnership. By turns erotic, adventurous, and philosophical,
Unexpected Diversions explores Tez and Maria's deepening relationship, as one of them tries to atone for the evils he has done, and the other pays a steep price to obtain the only true form of immortality.

Very strange, intense dream this morning that woke me up about a half hour ago. I was dreaming about a memory, if that makes any sense, of my Dad being part of a Space Cowboys style Apollo mission to the moon, using refurbished Apollo era equipment to fix something there He did this just a couple of years before he died, and if you had asked me immediately after I woke up, I could have described going down to Florida to watch the launch with my mom, watching the flight on the news, and our worry as they landed and only had intermittent communications with Earth.

This plainly ridiculous for a number of reasons. Never mind the idea of NASA actually having enough restorable Apollo equipment or the institutional memory to put it back together and pull off such a mission. My Dad, at the time I thought the flight was, would be older than John Glenn and suffering from emphysema after smoking for sixty+ years. Hardly astronaut material. Nevertheless, I was on the verge of Googling "Apollo 18" to convince myself it had happened when I first woke up. Because there was so much stuff my dad had done in his life that he hadn't told me about until he was close to dying*, that flying to the Moon and then not bothering to talk much about it would have been entirely in character with him.

*I had know, vaguely, that he had been in the OSS during WWII, and done one or two semi-impressive investigations with the FCC after the war, but until close to the end he'd never mentioned he flew on a blimp up and down the California coast looking for illegal radio transmitters. Or for that matter, most of his romance with my mom, which was sweet all of itself.

Then I can (hopefully with 's help) put the manuscript together for publication on Lulu.

So to that end, I now open the floor to artists who have enjoyed my Tez and Maria stories and would like a copy of the Unexpected Diversions omnibus for themselves. I'm estimating that the book's value will be $15 before shipping costs, but for those who participate, it'll be free.

Rules are as follows:

1. Make a reply below saying you'd like to draw something for it.

2. If I think your art style would be suitable, I'll send a private note to you to get your address and other shipping info.

3. I'm looking for inked or clean pencil illustrations that can be used for interior art. Color or shaded art would be nice, but would drive up the printing costs too high for anyone else to be really interested in buying it (this is, essentially, a vanity publishing deal after all).

4. Illustrations should be sized for a trade paperback (6" x 9"). Half sized (6 x 4 1/2) would also be welcome.

5. Preferably the illo should be of a scene from one of the stories. But if you just want to do a generic character picture or "off-screen" scene, then I can probably find a place for it, either in the main text or a separate gallery in an appendix.

6. To prevent artists from duplicating scenes, if it comes to that, I'll open a forum thread on my home page for everyone to discuss things openly.

7. One book will be shipped to the artist per every one to two illustrations provided.

8. Please try to keep any illustrations PG-13. IE: No naughty bits hanging out, and scenes of violence (if any) can be a bit bloody but not covered in gore.

9. Full credit to all artists, whether your real names or a preferred pseudonym, will be given at the front of the book

9. This solicitation will remain open until I start the final editing process. For now, I'm shooting to complete that within 60 days. Books will be shipped the the artists ASAP once I publish on Lulu.

Links to the individual stories that will be in this books:

Unexpected Diversions, Part One: [link]
Unexpected Diversions, Part Two: [link]

Unforeseen Consequences, Part One: [link]
Unforeseen Consequences, Part Two: [link]

The Island Lord: [link]

Stride: [link]

Failure Mode: [link]

Open Canvas: [link]

Shopping Expedition: [link]

Andrea's Story, Part One (note: ignore all the present day scenes in the current posted version. The major sticking point recently has been completing Andrea's Story, but I've finally come to the decision to just edit it wit ha chainsaw and reduce it to a series of vignettes without the present day incidents and ditching my attempt to shoehorn in her romance with her eventual husband.

As I mentioned over a year ago, once I get the stories finalized, anyone offering to do artwork for the book (clean pencil or B&W inked preferred) will get a free copy.

Her next favorite thing seems to be looking at the picture book I sent in the care package...and the doll baby.

Wierd Factoid: Talking to my mom last night she mentioned little Georgia was found by the police on the same day that her namesake, my grandmother Georgia Easton, was born. By the orphanage's best estimate she was actually born on March 23rd, which just happens to be my birthday. I'm not sure I believe in destiny but WOW.

I have no idea why, but for some reason I've had the daydream of a Saudi Arabian theater production of the musical 1776, translated into Arabic, running through my head.
Though the idea of translating the opening number's line "For God's sake, John, sit down!" to "All Merciful God, John..." does have a certain appeal.

So, with fond memories of Star Blazers Series One still running through my brain, I put "Final Yamato" the last Space Battleship Yamato (the original Japanese name for Star Blazers) theatrical movie in my Netflix queue. I shouldn't be surprised that the ship sinks in this one because at two hours and forty-five minutes the damned thing is almost as long as "Titantic". I'm only about 40 minutes in and already have had my suspension of disbelief not merely stretched, but pulled to the breaking point and then tied into a pretzel knot.

Events of note in more or less plot order that I've seen:

1) Bad guy turned good guy Dessler (Deslock in Star Blazers) is killed offscreen when his re-built empire is destroyed by a completely unexpected galaxy colliding with the Milky Way. Captain Kodai (Wildstar in SB), investigating this event, mourns his passing by tossing a bouquet of lillies from the deck of Yamato down to the planet below. Presumably in the future all warships will be equipped with a flower shop just in case this sort of thing is needed.

2) Aquarius, a planet completely composed of water, floods the Dungali homeworld.

3) The Dungali (sp), looking for a new planet to settle, decide to space warp Aquarius to Earth in order to flood it... to get rid of the Earthlings... so they can settle it... Despite it being flooded and everything.

3A) So if they could do that, wouldn't have been simpler to divert Aquarius away from their own homeworld in the first place?

4) The Yamato, her crew all either unconcious or dead from multiple hits by Dungali "Ultra-radiation missles" flies herself back to Earth.

5) Situation: You're Yuki/Nova, a trained nurse. You find your long-term fiance Kodai lying seemingly dead on the Yamato's bridge along with a pile of other bodies. Do you A) Check his vitals to see if he's alive? or B) Pull out his pistol and try to commit suicide in dispair?

I've got about two hours to go before this is over. I'm not sure my brain is going to make it.

So for those of you who follow this journal or my LiveJournal you probably know I'm in the process of finishing a few more Tez and Maria stories with the intention of self-publishing them on lulu.com. I have the great advantage in this effort of having the aid of , who has already made a wonderful cover image [link] and who intends (time permitting) to do several interior illustrations.

Now, even with that, this is likely to be a very slim volume. When I recently edited the current draft of the story I'm working to remove spaces between the paragraphs and justify them, I managed to lower my page count on one story from 65 to 50! In the end, the total page count will likely just squeeze by at around 120 pages, even with Peta's illos.

So, I was thinking that I might try to fill the page count with an "Other Visions" gallery, using (with permission) other artists images of Tez and Maria that I've managed to accumulate over the years. I've got at least three or four, and I hoping to persuade some artists to get more.

So to that end, I make the following public offer. Anyone who wishes to produce art for the book, I promise I will provide you a free copy of the finished book after I make it availible for sale. I will not ask you to produce anything until after I've finished writing my text. If you do request to provide an illustration in exchange for a copy of the book, I reserve the right to turn down your offer if your skills don't appear to be in the same league as the other illustrators providing work (I'm not asking you to match or 's quality, but I'm not looking for ten minute pencil sketches or stick figures either)

Does this sound reasonable? Anyone interested?
