An exception would be a set of bodies with tattoos.

For example, I intentionally stayed away from any photographic source, using only hand painting, as the original Bethesda bodies did. I think a photorealistic body might be possible and make an alternate texture that is quite different. We see this done with Rhedd's heads to good effect.

I found this in a post over at Psycho Dog Studios and this is good news for me since I'm starting out fresh from the mesh itself, noticing its possibilities, while staring at photos of naked men... ahem good reference pictures, until my eyes bleed. All other retextures I've seen have basically been high resolution varieties of the original BB textures. At least the rare MALE ones. Female retexture projects seem to spawn like cliffracers.

So naturally I will NOT do female bodies! I will retexture some of Bethesda's female heads, though. I've just reinstalled the game and this time I'm not using any head packs.

I'm not modifying any current textures, but working from scratch from an exported UV-map, a grid of sorts that guides me. I will not look too much at the other textures in fact. There are some reasons for this: They're not that appealing to begin with, however detailed they are and they have anatomy issues. I will TRY to do some visual corrections, but I can't do anything with the mesh.

So, today I have exported the UV-map (it took a while because I had to export all body parts individually and then merge them) and started to work on placement on the front of the torso. A picture of my current progress is here: [link]

It's not grey because I'm making a Dunmer texture, even if that's something you would suspect from me. I'm rendering it in greyscale so I can easily modify the colours for the different races.

Now I need reference pictures!

EDIT: Now I've worked a bit more on the placement lines: [link] It's quite different to the other BB textures, in fact, but I think it will work. I'll replace one of the active textures with it later to see how it works along with the animations. This stage is quite important to get right so I don't start painting the skin wrong. I'm using photos and Robert's Oblivion bodies as reference.

Gimp for Painters: [link]
It's smooth. It doesn't have the same feel as SAI, but the result is the same. It's a matter of getting used to the faster strokes again. At least I already know the interface.

While I was on the lookout I found a whole bunch of free art programs that others may find useful, depending on taste. I've found they have basically the same functions, but the interfaces make them more or less difficult to use. SAI doesn't suffer from this, but I can't buy it. (No Paypal, no credit card)

ArtRage, Starter Edition [link]
The full edition (I think?) came with my Wacom tablet. It looks quite weird and claims the entire screen. It looks nothing like the other programs. I didn't find glitter and "drying" blobs of paint very useful.

ArtWeaver [link]
Someone said it looks like a clone of Painter. I wouldn't know. Now I've fiddled with it a bit more and I'm quite impressed. It takes more learning, though, but the clean interface makes that very easy.

Dogwaffle [link]
Apart from an odd name, it has a nice looking interface and can co-operate with ArtWeaver through a plugin (called DogWeaver). I didn't try, though. I shut it down to try other apps when it was clear it didn't come with many brushes and I didn't have time to bother. Apparently it's made for animation as well. Don't know what kind.

Often called "the free Photoshop". It's an all-round program that does photo editing just as well as actual painting. It has a very limited set of brushes to start with, but that's easily fixed. There are tons of downloadable packages and you can make your own too. The program may be customized with some of the many plugins. The new version 2.6 is apparently so different from the older versions you have to uninstall them completely or make a new program folder.

Once I did the other way around and made the Ordinators in Morrowind use the female animations instead. That was quite hilarious

I've been typing like a woodpecker the last two days as I dug up a couple of notes on Breonnarin's earlier life and thought that I could just as well make a short story of how he fared in Ald-Ruhn and why he stopped studying at Mages Guild in favour of being a thief. It's almost done, but I need to read it over tomorrow to catch errors and tidy up the language. It's around ten pages long. That's a lot from me in just two days!

Altmer on a Leash is doing fine. I'm sketching up new parts of the plot every night. Yesterday was quite amusing but tonight... I'm not looking forward to it at all I hate abusing my own characters!
