Yeah, it has. If you take a look at the results of the poll in my latest journals you'll notice that the "deviantart splat package number 2000 with five colors" iPhone skin has obviously won...of course it annoys me, having acually used two days for my skin as opposed to five minutes (the time the other took to start PS and save the pic), but then what should be the question/problem? is a shoddy paintsplatter really "cooler" than for example my thingy with clouds and a pretteh 3d object and actual depth? That splat design is by far the worst(definition : I think it's shit so that's why it's the worst) in that pack, but still it has the biggest number of votes.

So in conclusion, does this mean a bunch of iPhone owners(read : all of them) just...are not the brightest persons around as that "design" I could make on your phone with real paint and it would prolly look better, or is it just that I have taken the wrong direction in art, actually using time to make something look good instead of blindfolding myself and rubbing my bottom onto a paper.

WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THINGS HOLY!

Not the only thing I'm kinda pissed off mind you. The fact of the matter is, Tatskinz now owns my design and I have no voice on this one, so I am not allowed to use it anywhere else...

Let's see them stopping me with their Macs, asswipes.

/rant

ps, ikarus, I know you have an iphone, don't take this personally

And the answer is...

No.

(EDITS BELOW)

The reason for this answer boggled my mind a bit. Apparently I can't texture like they want. So anyone wanting to get there, this is not what they want :

[link]

[link]

That is what I gave to them as a proof of what I can do, texturewise. To this they said "We want someone who can texture photorealistically. Someone who can transfer a photo (of a buildings wall in my case) and not make any adjustments at all to it and use that photo as a texture straight away" That is really what they said.

That sounds very much like a thing I like to call CopyPasta so you can imagine my face when I read that. All the things I know, all the time I have put into learning those, all for naught. I should have just learned to copy and paste images from the internet, into a buildings wall and I would have been pro, none of this painstaking drawn by hand stuff, with dozens of layers...

Seriously, what a load of crap. If that is how they make their stuff then I don't want to be near them... ever. That is not what I want to do.

EDIT:

Okay...

I actually asked about this from the AD of Bugbear, who was nice and explained this all to me.
First of all, I didn't follow the ref to the point, the windows are the biggest difference to the ref as I went and lost control over my artistic side so one big fail there (i just thought they looked better that way >___> )

Then about the copying and such, they do it. It's very simple, they take a photo and put it on the model, minor cutting and adjusting is needed usually, especially when there's only one side of the building photographed, but nothing like what I do, with tiled textures which I make unique by hand. It's all about saving time with dozens of assets.

Oh well, I just have to learn this way of doing things.

EDIT OF EDIT :

And for those who may wonder what they gave me as a ref pic to follow

[link]

Okay.

I downloaded the demo after hearing mildly good things about it's haxed multiplayer (which I never tried to find or play. you'll see why). Started the game and I got slapped silly with license commercials and whatnot. I really don't care if an Ace Combat clone has the license to use Saab's fighters...

Then tampered around with the settings, which were on the highest automatically so at least the game recognized my hardware. Switched my controller settings to "expert" in hopes of getting away from the system that the game is all hyped about : a system that helps you to intercept the enemy, prevents you from stalling and pretty much does everything for you... as if an arcade shooter really needs all that but oh well.

Then off we go to the game. Started the tutorial mission and felt like "hey this is not so bad. looks okay and i can actually get inside the cockpit. Even the controls seem to work nicely."

Then all hell went loose.

The tutorial was apparently made to get you accustomed to the "Limiter OFF" system, which is said to give you an added edge during dogfights and give you the "full control capabilities of modern day fighters" so that you can execute daring maneuvers while totally kicking your enemy's ass. These are all things that the OFF (remember the caps) system does not do despite the hype.

The thing it does best is to get the player (me) shouting "FUCK NO WHAT IS THIS SHIT I CAN'T CONTROL MY PLANE WHERE THE FUCK IS THE GROUND I CAN'T EVEN SWITCH TO THE COCKPIT VIEW!"

Because that is exactly what it does. The system switches the view to a camera that is focused on the direction of the locked-on enemy, your craft remaining on the immediate vicinity of the center of the view. From this view you have to control your craft while the camera stays fixed to the enemy's direction. It's never fixed to the enemy's actual location. Talk about a disorienting experience. My plane swooshes in a all possible angles but my camera stays leveled with the horizon.

At this point I wanted to switch back to the "Limiter ON" mode because I felt that if having my Limiter OFF meant that I had to control my fighter from a drone camera positioned in a random spot in the sky then I would rather limit myself. The tutorial said "NO. You must learn to use this awesome new technology so that you can be good." So I quit the tutorial and took a moment to gather my mind.

Then I went to play an actual mission, where my purpose was to shoot down bad guys coming in a variety of fighters, boats, tanks and bombers...in that order. No surprises there eh? I thought this would be nice because the limiter could be left ON altho I had specified that I wanted to use the expert control settings. Well what the hell. At least it should get rid of all the helpsignals, interception helpers and whatnot. All part of the modern day fighters systems I'm sure.

Well apparently having the expert controls don't mean shit to the game or its designers so here I was stuck with annoying messages that recommended me to engage the interception helper and so on. I ignored them and continued, hoping that that would be the only annoyance I would face. Guess what?

I was wrong.

Having played for about ten minutes I apparently went too close to the game areas border, which was in the middle of the city I had to protect. No warnings were issued, like "Turn around" or something. No.

The game just took control of my machine while flashing an arrow that pointed to the other direction than where I was heading and while I struggled to retain control of the machine to raise it up from the sea-level on which I was flying, the game, apparently thinking that I was wrong, plunged me straight to the sea.

What happened next is as follows : I shouted some mildly offensive words to the game and its makers, tried to exit with the trusty Alt-F4 with no success, Ctrl-Alt-Deleted and shut it down, went to Steam and promptly deleted the game from my machine.

Really. Not good. I don't see it getting good even if they put Tom Cruise into it, which would just make it even gayer than the movie you all know about.

And I really don't see the need of putting RPG elements into an ARCADE SHOOTER! Getting experience to unlock new planes? Wow...so original and useful.

That's the end of my rant. The Ace Combat series is still my choice if I want an unrealistic jetfighter game which has all the features needed and actually works in terms of being fun and addictive at the same time. Tom Clancy fans may like this game because you can help the Ghost squad (or whatever it was) by destroying things on the ground : STORY CONTINUUM. THEY'RE ACTUALLY CONNECTED WOOO!

Right...

This is SkyWay. Still liking games that work without all that extra bullshit and licenses that no-one gives a shit about...

Yeah.

Just finished reinstalling Vista because 3D Studio Max would not show the "Modifiers" drop-down menu when the toolbox was in my second monitor. It worked fine when in the primary and I thought it was Vista getting broken and shiz.

Turns out I was wrong.

3D Studio Max would not for some reason or another recognize my monitors PHYSICAL arrangement. My screens are arranged in a way where the main monitor is on top of the secondary and of course this is the way I have made them be in the Display Configuration. When I reverted to the "normal" dualview setup of having the monitors side by side the drop-down worked again.

It was kind of a "WTF JUST HAPPENED?" moment...

A program with a prize-tag going over ONE THOUSAND EUROS, having been around for how long, currently at the 11th version and this is what you get? How can the code even fuck up something like that?

Oh right...they use their own drop-down menu code instead of the default Windows implementation. That code causes the menu to open virtually in a monitor that should be on the right side of the main monitor...

Wonders of the world. I'm seriously considering moving to another program...all these flaws in the program are beginning to pile up.

Oh and Max's DX10 drivers seem to not work either...

End of rant.

EDIT :

I have a 3D Connexion 3D mouse. It's awesome when the sensor don't get dusty.

BUT

Altho it has support for Max...it really doesn't. It crashes randomly, creates oddities, fucks up the whole thing when you're not paying attention. This is just another example of Max being a cock. really if you're considering buying a 3D modeling software steer away from Max. It just isn't worth it.

Have to edit this for lazy people. READ THE WHOLE FRICKIN JOURNAL! k?

So here we have [link]

He gave me a tip on realism with my models.

And I got pissed off thinking "HE? Giving me a tip? Look at teh stuff he does! This is a joke!"

Well what the hell? I was the same once. My stuff was worse than his. I could blame the tools I had or the lack of power in my computer.

But those are just excuses. I had enthusiams and I knew what I wanted to do. No frickin way was I going to give up.

But one thing I lost at one BIG turning point in my life as a 3D illustrator. As a visualist. A dreamer.

Arrogance.

Because I know I can be better and that I need the help of those who are better than me now. Nothing I have made or will make will be perfect.

This whole crusade of an idiot against a child began with Jester giving comments on my work like

"its not as easy as it looks.you really need to watch tutorials but after a few months you can make things like these"

and

"i dont want to hurt you or something,im just givig you a tip cause in real life hose edges arent that sharp"

So here is what I said to jesterv2 on his Ferrari model after some not so intellectual exchange of words.

"You gave me a tip on "realism" so now I'm gonna repay for that. This is meant for you to read and understand, so don't think of this as some spiteful mouthing.

Which it actually is but anyway.

You might want to learn to use the meshsmooth modifier (or ,heaven forbid, if you're using the Turbosmooth then don't.) Theres the option of "separate by smoothing groups" which I think you know gives you control over the way the modifier tessellates the mesh. By using that correctly you can get rid of those "bumps" as you call them which are caused by the mesh not tesselating correctly due to edges or vertices being too close to each other. Also I find the "Classic" style of subdivision better than the "NURMS." It just works better. But anyway this tessellation error phenomenon is apparently occurring all over your model, so take another look at your lowpoly base and correct the polyflow. Or in case you have converted to poly after using that meshsmooth then start over, there is no saving for this model.

And that front...it's a plane of steel? used to kill people? Get your design right while you're at it okay? At least chamfer the edges or something.

Onto the material. It's plastic so this is a toy-car? That would explain the wheels not having any space to move in. Realistically cars have a suspension and steering system that would require the wheels to have some space...
But the material really is shiny. I want one of those paints for my car. Very bling. Almost unreal.

Found this on the net and thought it would come in handy for my next car but hey. Since you're all pro you should find this useful too [link] It's a mental ray tutorial for creating a "studio car paint" material.

My main points : get the design right, even if you're going for something totally unrealistic. If it looks like it's made from plastic and in a hurry then that's what it is even though you've wanted it to be otherwise.

Then make sure you make a good and solid lowpoly base with no errors in the mesh and a good polyflow, that'll help clear up the biggest problems the subdivision modifiers have.

Go for details only after you've completely satisfied with your mesh. They can really mess up a good model if your base is lacking.

Do not make everything smooth. A ball is smooth. A good looking girls skin is smooth.

And soft

A car isn't. It's made from steel, aluminium and that fancy carbon fibre stuff that everyone uses. It's hard, cold and should have angles in it. I have yet to see a car that's all smooth.

I'm not gonna go into the materials and lighting your picture because that's a whole different story.

I know i've forgotten something in this tip but I think you, seeing as you know everything better than me and can do the stuff I do in a jiffy, know what to do and I don't have to worry about it.

It's a world of opportunities for guys like you. You're so good and original that it makes my eyes hurt.

Just giving you a tip. I don't mean to hurt your feelings or anything."

If anyone thinks I did wrong and I should just ignore that guy and whatever...

I won't

I take pride on what I do. Baseless arguments, tips with a sneer and a mocking attitude towards my stuff are never going to get by without a sound. Even when they are done by children with no understanding of what they say.

That's just the idiot I am.

"Introduction

Air State is a free internet multiplayer game currently in development, and will be publicly released within the next few months.

Air State is a fast paced online team play helicopter combat flight shooter, set in the near future across barren desert landscapes. Teams of up to 50 players battle head to head in gripping tactical game play in state of the art helicopter gun ships.

Air State uses the Turbine Game Engine, designed specifically for this game, to meet high demands of visual graphics and network architecture while maintaining full scalability to allow very low minimum system requirements. Air State will require Windows and DirectX9, and will comfortably run on a 500mhz with a 16mb graphics card, while faster systems will enjoy higher standards of visuals."

<sub>
Please read. I got this from

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

These days in Finland are annoying. One day you have this beautiful snow covering the landscape and the other you got your feet deep in slush. The thing that I like in winters are those crisp days when the snow is dry and iced and there is almost no wind and when you look up to the sky you feel the calming coldness. There's something in the atmosphere that makes me want to create something as calming and cold as the sky. I think I will submit my old Christmas Globe picture...

Yes. It has started again. The pain.

It's my final year at college and i'm confident that I will pass all my exams with good numbers. But what that means is, that I'll have to study and study and did I mention that I'll have to STUDY! I have been thinking... and I have a solution on how to arrange my schedule.

But thats for the school. I haven't posted anything in DA for a long time and that's because I have moved TWO frickkin times in summer, been workin the whole summer vacation and I don't have a computer now so I think it's obvious why I haven't posted any deviations.

That's all about to change this week... I will get my computer... just you wait...

And to all you people who start their school again: Just bear with it. Sooner or later you'll realize that it's a good thing that you worked so hard in there.
