Warning: Claire proceeds to write a frigging thesis on the movie she saw last night. You can skip to the bottom if you want.

I mainly wanted to see it in the first place because of the nostalgia factor--I read the picture book it was based on when I was in primary school, and I liked it. (Whereas I also read the one that seems to be everyone's favourite, "Where the Wild Things Are", but it didn't actually interest me that much. So no, I'm not going to see that film as well.)

The thing is, there wasn't much of what you could call a plot in that book--you certainly couldn't get an entire feature film out of adapting it faithfully. Taking some liberties--i.e., taking the concept (which was what the book really was, a concept of a world where the only source of food was the weather), and running with it--was the only thing you could do. And it could have been shit; just a bunch of bright moving colours and cliche'd dialogue that would shut the kids up for an hour or so, and nothing else.

So why am I tl;dring about a children's movie based on a children's picture book? BECAUSE IT WAS AWESOME XD I think it was made specifically for me XD

The protagonist, Flint, is a nerdy, awkward, dorkily enthusiastic aspiring scientist, with a silly haircut. Yes, in other words, he's basically the male version of me. You understand now, don't you? XD He has a poster of Nikola Tesla, a t-shirt that says "Science is AWESOME", and a lab he built himself (with egg-carton walls); he hums theme music for himself and narrates what he's doing, and constantly wears his lab coat. I want to marry him XD Oh yes, and he was teased at school when he was all little and cute. Hear that? It's my heartstrings being tugged. IT'S AUDIBLE FROM THE MOON.

Even his "cute", "hyper" pet monkey (because all kids' movies have to have a "hilarious" animal mascot that does retarded things), is hardly annoying at all. Well, I'm already sold on it--but wait, there's more??

Now, Flint is a cartoon scientist after all, most commonly known as an "inventor". Cartoon scientists tend to be good at a bit of everything, and they go around making all sorts of random "inventions" based on whatever inspiration hits them. Real life science doesn't work like that, obviously, but that's okay, we're watching a cartoon here. Hold on a moment, here comes the obligatory female character and love interest, Sam. She's--a meteorologist? Wow, they do acknowledge that different disciplines of science exist! Awesome! All right, not to give too much away, but Sam's actually a weather girl, since acting dumb and bubbly and just announcing the weather on TV while looking cute doesn't get her teased for trying to do something nerdy like meteorology. (There go my heartstrings again.) She has a tendency to say something technical-sounding, then quickly covering it up by saying something else. ("Jello tastes good!") A female character used the word "peptide" in an animated film... I want to marry her, too! XD

Am I going to shut up and stop fangasming already? Nope, sorry, still more. I've only talked about the characters. I want to express my opinion of the animation, too. I'm a big fan of animation, of all kinds, from all countries, 2D, 3D, CGI, traditional, stop-motion... The interesting thing about CG animation is the degree to which it's realistic or cartoony. I remember when I first watched Toy Story back in the day, and I could really believe that they were some actual toys come to life--but seeing the human characters was jarring and destroyed the illusion. Those were early days after all, and humans are about the most difficult things to do convincingly, because they're both complex, and so completely familiar that we pick up even the tiniest inaccuracies--ESPECIALLY the tiny inaccuracies. Move on a bit to, say, the Final Fantasy 7 film. Even if you hated it, or even if you were like me and didn't know the first thing about FF7, you couldn't say that it wasn't visually stunning. I would risk saying that it was about as close to realism one could get without pitching headfirst into the uncanny valley (though this is personal opinion; others might say they'd already fallen in, or that we could still improve). If I go into that, we'll be here even longer. (You can read on Wikipedia what the "uncanny valley" is if you haven't heard that term.)

I used some of my hard-earned, uh, earnings, to buy the first two seasons of Robin Hood on DVD--can't wait to sit down and watch that, I've been deprived of neck fanservice too long 8D All I need now is the third season, which is long over in the UK, but hasn't even aired here. I think someone just said a giant "SCREW YOU" to Australia and ignored us ;_;

And then. AND THEN. I received the mail, and it was a parcel from *SamCyberCat and *Moonstar102 Are you paying attention, guys? THANKYOU SO MUCH I LOVE YOU _{I'M PRETTY SURE IT WAS MY TURN TO SEND YOU SOMETHING YOU KNOW}

Now I finally know what a "stick of rock" is, and tasted it. (I had to eat it, it was too broken to keep. At least this package wasn't torn open, although it was taped shut, so unless you put the tape there, it has been opened.) And having all the Misawa Appreciation Weekend pictures--and the doctor/lawyer golf!--just warms my heart I've thought of the perfect safe place to put them now, too--I needed something awesome to put in my Mario folder!

And the games. That's really going above and beyond. My collection of the Ace Attorney series is complete!! YOU HAVE CONSOLIDATED ITS OWNERSHIP OF MY HEART AND SOUL.

...And I can't thank you enough for it If you see a postman in a semitrailer, don't worry, that's just a large delivery of love for you. He might need to make several trips.

ALICE COOPER CONCERT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME AND STUFF

He opened with "School's Out". Another song or two later, he was forced into a guillotine (for stabbing one of his masked adversaries right through the stomach with a big metal spike) and then picked up his own severed head to sing to that for a while. As you do. During the course of the show he was injected with a syringe bigger than he was (for "Poison", of course), hanged, and put in a cabinet to be stabbed right through with giant spikes.

...OHH, so THAT'S why it was called "Alice Cooper's Theatre of Death"
_{Sarcasm, in case it's not obvious with me XD He HAS been doing shows like this for thirty years or more...}

The contest is... The Worst "BRB" Message Ever.

The idea came from *Hiita-hime and *SamCyberCat. Sam is currently the winner by default, since during an MSN conversation one evening she left me with "brb, disaster" which caused me to sit there staring at the screen and biting my nails until she came back and reassured me that she'd been exaggerating. And not long after that, she used "brb, death", although she did that on purpose to freak me out again. IT WORKED D: (She then remembered that I'm a wuss and has stopped doing it XD)

I decided to make it into a contest after a conversation I was just having with *Hiita-hime, because the message she sent was (warning, may squick the men in the audience) "ARGH, I NEED A SHOWER AND A FRESH TAMPON, STAT." She didn't realise until after she pressed enter what kind of bloody mental images it conjured up XD She amended it with "I was gonna say 'brb, tampon slipping' but thought it a bit grotesque."

So! PRESS REPLY, EVERYONE, WHAT'S THE WORST "BRB" MESSAGE YOU CAN IMAGINE?

Shocking, right? Next I'll be saying something completely bizarre like I didn't enjoy Kingdom Hearts either _{I didn't like it, in case that wasn't apparent.}

It's probably too late to say this now, but please don't flame me. I'm sorry about all the sarcasm, but this isn't a rant about how the fandom sucks and everyone who likes it is stupid. I wouldn't say something ridiculous like that. This is just forewarning to people not to recommend the series to me anymore, please; and it's so popular that every second person I talk to is probably going to do just that.

I'm a bit frustrated.

I wasn't really interested to begin with, but my dear beloved *Hiita-hime insisted I read it. And you know she's dedicated, she put up with my bitching and whining the whole time XD

Here's why I'm so frustrated. In third-person and chronological order XD

1) Claire downloads zip of the collected comic strips. IT TAKES TWO HOURS. Claire had been planning to go to sleep prior to starting this download.
2) Claire has to find, download and install a program to extract the zip files, since there wasn't one on this computer.
3) Claire spends a further two hours reading the contents of the "main storyline" chapter.
4) Claire's worst subject in school was history, followed by geography. Claire DOESN'T GET ANY OF THE JOKES (except "Italy sucks lol!). She also has trouble telling most of the characters apart.
5) Claire despairs at getting through the hundreds of folders of content still left. *Hiita-hime suggests she watch the anime instead. Claire clicks the link she provides.
6) Claire's computer reacts with "HOLY SHIT VIRUSES!!!11one1" Firefox reacts by crashing. Claire tries to fix things.
7) Claire finds nothing helpful on Youtube. Claire gives up.


TL;DR: I'M PRETTY SURE IT WASN'T MEANT TO BE XD But you can't say I didn't try.

Perhaps if Hetalia had fixed the economy, done my taxes and cured cancer the way I'd been lead to believe it would, it would've been worth all the frustration.

Yep, received a package from *SamCyberCat and ~Moonstar102 today. It was full of love and newspaper. I opened it up and my auntie asked what it was meant to be, because nothing was visible under the paper at first. I told her I'd ordered an English newspaper, but some assembly was required.

Australian customs had opened it (and they clearly weren't gentle, the lid was torn XP) but I don't think anything was missing or damaged. Guys, I can't thank you enough! Honestly, Sam, the figurines? You can't spoil me like that, the DS was already too much I do have to get an adaptor so that I can plug the charger in, but that's easy; then I can test it

I want to thank you both for the drawings especially, because they're one-of-a-kind And it was quite amusing discovering which ones they were: "oh wow, a print of my favourite photo, I have to get a frame for this.. hey there's something atta--HOLY CRAP NAKED BASTIAN" XD Yeah, gotta detach that before I put the photo where people can see it

I think the sticker and colouring books are brilliant, not only as art references but for the entertainment value. Have you read the captions in them? I think they were written by a six-year-old XD And I think I know where I can still get stickers if I was so inclined

And oh my freaking god, I cannot believe you sent me Robin Hood action figures. I opened them, because I wanted to enjoy them as opposed to keeping them in "mint condition" and selling them on eBay like a dick; they have pride of place with the little Zane and Jaden ones. Guy is fighting a giant rhino whilst the Sherriff is siccing his bird on the Cyber End Dragon (I'll have to get pictures somehow.)

I still say my idea was better--put it in a big pot and pretend it's a real tree. Hey, you can get those plastic ones that are made to look like terracotta, it would have been a fake tree in a fake pot, it would have been great

Nothing puts me in the Christmassy mood like doing the tree. I'm going to have to post photos of it, it is probably the dumbest Christmas tree EVER XD It's older than I am. So are most of the decorations XD The thing is, right, I remember looking through a magazine at the "tasteful" decorations and I thought "WTF is this shit? They're BORING." (Seriously, those matte gold decorations with a bit of glitter thrown on, they suck.) I was literally baffled by someone mentioning the colour scheme of their decorations. Just... no. The way to decorate your tree, and whatever else, as far as I'm concerned:

Step 1: Cover it in as much tacky junk as you can find
Step 2: ???
Step 3: PROFIT

Our tree? Probably weighs twice as much as it did before we decorated it It's got lights, blinking lights, stars, bells, baubles, wooden toys, bows, angels with tinsel halos, a miniature Christmas tree (why?? XD), these multicoloured disco ball.. things, the weird little sequined gremlin my sister made, and about ten metres of
scruffy tinsel. It looks like a group of kindergarten kids did it XD

And it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside C: Because damn it, it's the epitomy of celebration, all light and colour and noise and liveliness. All right, well, I walked into the kitchen this evening to talk to my sister. I wanted a drink, too, and there were two soft drink bottles on the sink with a small amount of coloured liquid left in each. Not really paying attention, I thought "well, there's not much left in that one, if I drink it all I won't even need to use a glass". So I grabbed the closest bottle, opened it and took an enthusiastic swig.

You know something is very wrong when your soft drink is thick... and oily... AND HAS CHUNKS IN IT OH MY GOD D:

Dad had opened a tin of tuna this afternoon, and he couldn't pour the oil down the sink because it's bad for the septic system, so he stored it in an empty soft drink bottle. Which was sitting right next to the bottle of actual soft drink. And it was in front of the window so it was warm.

Warm, fishy, chunky oil = VERY UNPLEASANT SENSATION FOR THE UNSUSPECTING.

My lovely, sympathetic mother laughed and told me she'd been waiting for someone to do that ._.

The book: it is fabulous. I read the whole thing already, and couldn't help imagining some of the entries in the creepy Vincent Price voice XD I have definitely got to visit the real "poison garden" sometime. It had an entry for tea, as well; apparently "drinking more than five cups a day is a sign of addiction". Uh oh >.> (The first thing I did after going through the letter was make tea XD) Dad was a bit "WTF?" when I showed it to him, I don't think he understands poison enthusiasm like we do.

The cards: wow! There were so many awesome ones! The Rescue Cat is so insanely cute, I want to put it somewhere I can look at it all the time. Hell, I want to get a pet cat that looks like it and get it to wear a helmet XD And you shouldn't apologise about them mostly being from the Zane deck--I LIKE that deck. That's where all the robot dragons come from You gave me Cyber Twin Dragon! <3 My sister was amused by the "Remove Brainwashing" one, I think her comment was "well, THAT'S a real subtle illustration!" (Is it just me, or does the girl in the picture look like Alexis?) And she liked Mokey Mokey Smackdown (she went to a cosplay party and one of her friends went as Mokey Mokey King XD).

The postcard: what a cool lighthouse, I have to put that picture up somewhere I can look at it too. I wonder whose washing it is outside? Do you reckon that means people live in the lighthouse? Some of it is baby clothes... I wish I were born in a lighthouse XD

The drawings: all right, when I saw those, I was truly touched. Those are the hard copies of all our art trades, and birthday pictures, as well as the randomly inspired ones! That was possibly the best gift of all; I'm keeping those safe so I don't ever lose them. The first merman-Zane? That's a piece of history XD And the drawing on the back of the letter made me giggle, I'd almost forgotten that happened. Bastian's expression is too good, and poor Jaden doesn't get what the problem is XD (We all know how he should react, right? )

Definitely don't know how to thank you enough for all the thoughtful things, you really went above and beyond. Don't stop being awesome, you hear?

The imaginary producers are plagiarists too, it seems, because it started at the castle in Nottingham, where Guy and Allan were supposed to be keeping some amazoness bird-woman prisoner. See, I thought it was a Robin Hood based dream, and hence a good one. But no.

This amazoness bird-woman was bald, so Guy gave her a wig. It was a tacky fake-blonde thing, and this bird-woman had what looked like a fake tan, so the overall impression was that the imaginary producers had just hired ex-porno actresses for this "film" (they probably had).

Anyhow. The bird-woman escaped, and at this point I got to participate in the dream, yay, by going the same place she was. I was supposed to be riding a magical, green, cat-antelope creature with butterfly wings (my sister suggested we call it a Cantelope XD). What I was actually doing was hopping along and imagining that I was riding it. Yes, that's right, imagining it. In a dream. I'm surprised there wasn't a bloke following me and banging two halves of a coconut shell together.

I followed the bird-lady to a tree where all the bird-women lived, but only she and her partner were there. There were no bird-men, as you would expect in an "amazon" type society, so all the bird-women formed same-sex relationships. Which made sense, except in the case of this B-grade dream, it came across as more of a case of just being an excuse for random lesbian action. Also, baby bird-women were born from eggs that just magically appeared and were adopted by the other bird-women. How that happened was not explained, not even in the you-just-randomly-know-these-things way of most dreams.

The other bird-women weren't there because they were hunting, or captured, or some vague excuse not to have to hire more actresses. I don't even remember what I was meant to be doing or what happened next; I woke up.

So, to summarise: my dream was exactly like a bad fantasy film--poor actors, and not many of them; vague plot with obvious plotholes; gratituity; and complete lack of special effects. How disappointing!

Last time I had a dream involving both Guy and brightly coloured eggs, Guy was being "punished" by the Sherriff for not collecting them all. That was a good dream XD

I'm still using the deck I got at the start of the game, because to build my own I want the Cyber Dragons and stuff. Which are Zane's cards. And I have to get him to like me for them to be available in the card shop. And he is the character who I can't get to like me. ><

So I wasted about a thousand DP trying to find the sandwiches he would eat. By trial and error, mind you; until Sam pointed out to me that he only liked the Plain Sandwich. So I gave him his stupid empty sandwiches and it still wasn't enough; I had to give him the Golden Eggwich I was saving.

And of course, having finally managed to get him to not hate me, I was completely broke and couldn't afford the cards. DAMN YOU STUPID ZANE. He would be laughing at me, if he were capable of laughing. *shakes fist*

So, the release of the latest Grand Theft Auto game has people all up-ons because it's about living the life of a violent criminal. They removed certain scenes in the Australian release to bring it down to the 15+ rating.

But I'm sitting here laughing, and so I bet are the game's marketing team, because if anything was going to guarantee that under-15's are going to play this game now, it's the reaction of the people who are trying to "protect" them. Honestly, I'm even tempted to buy a copy out of sheer perversity, and I've never owned any of this series of games.

Funny, but films come out all the time full of violence and shooting and blood and drug abuse and swearing and sex and more violence and so on, and they get their R rating or whatever--and nobody gives a rat's arse. Because they're quite obviously not aimed at children, and anyone too young to see them isn't allowed to buy tickets. Call me crazy, but video games have pretty much the same rating system as films. Something like GTA is clearly aimed at adults, not children. But no, it's a video game, so it must be for three-year-olds. I mean, it's not like I'm 20 years old and still play video games or anything...

Okay, now I've caused myself an injury from excessive sarcasm. But my point is: the game is aimed at people old enough to understand the difference between fantasy and reality, who can handle some on-screen violence. Not everyone is entertained by that sort of thing, so not everyone will buy the game; and nobody is abducting pre-teens and forcing them to play it in training for a future life of crime, either.

There should be a new rating for games, though. D, for "likely to cause Drama", or "Dickheads will take offence". Or P, for "Pisses Claire off something shocking".

A lot has been going on these holidays, including the fact that my parents decided that it was time to finally move house and so had the family drop everything and just go. Now it's a fantastic house, a big four-bedroom affair with two bathrooms and an ensuite, three toilets, a kitchen/dining room, a formal dining room, a lounge, a study, a double garage and a games room--I'm kind of overwhelmed, considering the tiny house the seven of us (and two pets) have been crammed into since I was six. The only problem is that the phone wasn't even connected at first, and the internet still isn't hooked up 'til Wednesday. I'm reporting to you from the university, since I have a stack of work to get through and can't wait that long to try and get it done. Also, I don't even have a bed; if it weren't for the fact my sister moved out because she didn't want to come live in bumcrack nowhere with us, I'd be sleeping on the floor XD

As if moving house wasn't difficult enough, Dad also bought a second dog a few days before we moved (to keep Pippington company at the new place). Fergus, affectionately known as Fungus or Little Tosser, is a Jack Russel like Pip, but he has short hair which is about ten thousand times easier to keep clean. I'd forgotten how much trouble puppies were, but he's so cute we can forgive him for chewing on everything (and that includes our hands and arms and feet and any other part of us he can reach).

Well, there's also the fact that Guy is very pretty.

And the Sherriff, for all that he's an evil, sadistic, black-toenailed, snaggle-toothed, repellant old man, is weirdly loveable XD

The thing is, I'm pretty sure I know how every audition for that show went. I bet they called up the actor and told them "right, stand with your back to that pillar and look left. When I give you your cue, roll your head around, show as much neck as possible, until you're facing right. Okay, go!"

Honestly. In every episode I've seen, at least one person does that. Whenever someone is hiding behind something and watching someone else pass, the camera pans dramatically across and the hiding character can't just turn their head like a normal person--they have to describe as large an arc as they possibly can with their chin.

Okay, so Robin and his gang spend a lot of time in the woods hiding behind trees and watching other people; I guess they need to make it look interesting somehow. But it doesn't just happen in the forest scenes, this happens at every possible opportunity--in the village, in the castle, EVERYWHERE.

XD This show is hilarious. I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing at 7:30 on a Sunday night than getting my fill of neck fanservice on the ABC.

On the other hand, it's true, because it's impossible to be universally understood completely. There will be people who know you well that understand a lot of things about you, and there will be people who don't know you but aren't clouded by preconceptions and thus might pick up on things those that know you well don't understand.

Either way, the point of this philosophy discussion is that not being understood doesn't bother me. It's not that nobody understands me, it's that I don't understand anybody.

What bothers me is that I don't understand myself.

My problem is that I don't know what my problem(s) is(/are). Which isn't helpful at all, it's like saying a child died of SIDS--you don't die OF it, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a just a name for "they died and we don't know what of".

The point is, how can I hope to understand other people if I don't understand me? I haven't got much more than a superficial understanding of what drives me or holds me back; and I have real trouble with understanding other people.

Don't get me wrong now, this isn't an "oh my god I'm so depressed and holding in all this pain" journal. I'm generally content, I'm just tremendously confused. I'm like an awkward, confused teenager, except I'm 20 now so I'm an awkward, confused, immature adult. And I felt the need to vent a bit.

I had a robot eye which gave me x-ray vision and let me see infra-red. Plus I could use it to deactivate the security lasers in the building me and someone else were trying to break into.

It gets better My parents gave me an upgrade so I had robot legs too (with flowers growing on them, for some reason). The feet were jetpacks so I could fly. So I was flying somewhere and decided to land on a building, and I said "oh, I'll just fly downwards". Then I realised that 'flying downwards' is actually FALLING. I'm so silly. But luckily I caught myself with my jetpack feet.
