It's a little late for spring cleaning, but I've been meaning to go through my old crap for quite some time now (Some of it was 2004. Yikes!).

Apologies if I got rid of anything you liked, but I had a lot of very similar photos as well as a few that other people seemed to like which I didn't. [In fact, there are still several of those in my gallery still, but I'll wait before letting the axe fall on those].

Anyway, take a spin around and let me know if you like what you see!

<3

Katie

I guess part of the reasoning has to do with the different qualities of light. Different street lamps, flood lights, patio lights, etc. all have different hues. With long exposures, I can take a picture of what looks like something in regular, "yellow" light and on camera, the light source looks blue or green or red. I think that's kind of awesome.

Plus, with night photos, I feel you can take photos of people, places, things that you might pass by every day and actually bring out depth that just isn't there in daylight (at least, in some respects). Everything is a little creepier at night.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Ignore the mood that's listed, btw, because the computer I am on is slow to load the emoticons and thus I cannot change it to something less dramatic

Had a paper due yesterday, one due today, a labor economics problem set due tomorrow, statistics due Thursday.... and then I finally leave for Thanksgiving break (yes, I'm skipping out on classes Monday and Tuesday) only to come back next Friday. Then, I have an essay due Tuesday and two essays due Thursday (thankfully, one of these is only two pages long). The week following my essays is finals week.

Someone remind me why I took 19 credits?

To boot, my camera is nearing a comatose state. For those of you that don't speak "Katie," my camera is epically failing. The autofocus has been off since this summer. It's constantly focusing and drains my batteries like woah. Lately, the power button and menu wheels have been all gummed up. I literally have to use my teeth to alternate between autofocus, macro, sports shots, etc. because the wheel is so impossible to turn with my fingers. The power button sometimes doesn't like to turn on. Other times, it doesn't like to turn off. It's a Catch-22 of FAIL.

On the upside, I should be getting a new camera for Christmas. I contemplated getting an inexpensive SLR, but due to unforseen monetary issues [god I hate the economy], it looks like I'll be getting another "advanced" point-'n'-shoot. At the moment, I've been looking at the Nikon Coolpix p80. I'm going to try it out at Best Buy and compare the shutter lag with my Kodak z650.

To make a long story short, I'm not sure how many shots my camera will let me get before I dies. I'm actually not sure how much time I'll have to take photos before I get my new camera, either. Hopefully, I'll be updating soon.

<3 But thank you all for your kindness lately!

<rant>
So today I uploaded a photo to the Self Portrait gallery. However, not for the first time, when I browse to see other works in the gallery, I am bombarded by photographs without any artistic content. Finding beautiful pictures in this gallery is like finding a needle in a haystack: nearly impossible.

I'm not asking for every photo to be a masterpiece. My photo wasn't even that fabulous, but at least it was taken in an attempt to express something. That gallery seems to be a catch-all for users to post personal photographs of themselves. Many of the photos are myspace-esque pictures taken in poor lighting by either cell phones or video cameras, which (unlike good myspace-esque photos) are not even edited in a program to fix color and contrast issues.

All I would like to see is that artists treat this gallery with the same respect they treat others. If you want to post photos of your drunken debaucheries, then by all means, get an account with Yahoo or Flicker and post a link in your profile if you mean to share these experiences with this art community... Otherwise, please, keep deviantArt for the artists.

So, I've gone from having zero jobs, to having two definite jobs, three tentative jobs, a job offer, and possibly my position teaching jewelry making again at Michaels... not to mention the occasional babysitting I do for my Jane.

Just got back from vacation with my family... and I think it's about time for another one.
On the upside, at least I got to see Marquis in Bermuda.

Tomorrow, I am so hitting up the beach to see if I can get some pictures of not only the water, but possibly some of the wildlife that lives there. There were people water skiing there today, but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time there to snap any awesomee photos. Not only that, but maybe I'll have enough time to hit up Deep Cut Gardens and snap a couple of interesting pictures. Who knows?

Also, I'm working on something w/ my tablet. I wonder if I'll ever finish it, or if (as always) I'll just lose interest before finishing it...

Ben Folds: please have my children?

Well, Ben just finished playing his concert here at the University of Pittsburgh, and despite a painful chest cold and the death of my grandfather---I did get to see him. I was dead center, about 7 people back (standing concert). About 5 songs from the end I felt dizzy and moved to the right of the stage-- and actually, you could see him much better: there were much fewer people and was kind of hilly. Whatever-- it worked out in my favor like tenfold.
The fun and games have ended however. I won't be around for the next week. There are much more depressing events at hand (and I hope I can keep postponing how horrible I'm going to feel in two days).

Footage of the Oakland (Pittsburgh) Riots. I saw all of this from my window. Distressing, no?

This is what my friend Kate (who was in this mob) said of the night:

Pittsburgh Owned the Super Bowl!
Oh my freaking God. What an incredibly excellent night. I wish you guys could have been here.

My mother said it sounded like I was in a war zone, and I suppose that would be a logical conclusion. There were thousands of insane people running around in the streets, with at least three helicopters filming us for local news coverage (yes, that's how ridiculous it was here...), and people were lighting fireworks, and we swear we heard the sound of machine guns, but we never quit figured out what that was all about. Drunk people were trying to push the Cathedral over (the Cathedral is 40+ stories and huge and made of stone...), they were climbing lamp posts, tearing down street signs, jumping on cars, and very few of us were wearing coats....yeah, 26* and snow!

Seriously, though, I've never had such a rush...it was euphoric, almost. True, it was probably the potent mixture of pot smoke, sulfur from the fireworks, hallucinations from the cold, and clove cigarette smoke all coming together, but still, it was so much fun.

Now, I just want them to start playing Grey's Anatomy...enough of the news coverage already!

Here we go, Steelers. Here we go. Pittsburgh's going (er, went) to the Super Bowl!

(I don't need to hear that song again for a very long time...)

They won and chaos had broken out in the streets of Pittsburgh. Apparently, kids have overturned cars & overcame the first part of the police force-- then back up came. I dunno what happened after that.

o.< Chaos, I tell you.

Before, they (the 400+ people I can see right outside of my window on the street--not including the people down the street) were all jumping at the same time to "Here we go, Steelers. Here we go! *stomp stomp*"....

I'm not gonna lie-- I'm kind of psyched for politics. I've never thought myself the type.

But, I won't go off and rant about Bush and how he's an idiot. If you care enough, go read it here.

Posted a few more deviations since my last entry. One's blatantly political about post-9/11. One's just fun sketchiness with my tablet. The last is something that happened pretty sporatically, actually... The fairy/sunflower piece... was a pleasant surprise. I just started doodling on printer paper... and, thus, a pretty cute thing. I'm not a big fan of the entire concept-- but I like the technique I did with her hair and her hardcore background.

I've decided I don't do backgrounds nearly often enough. I love doing them in traditional media because I become a bit of a perfectionist with my tablet... a lot of things have been "eaten" up by my perfectionism--- and thus, have never really gotten the chance to be finished.

Curse of being a virgo, I suppose.

I'm back! Actually, I've been back since Jan 4, but that's a minor detail.

I'm back at school and life is just as hectic as it was when I left. I no longer have any idea what I want to do in life (as far as my major) and because of this, might have to transfer. (In which case, my mother will have to drag me kicking&screaming back to New Jersey-- this school is amazing!)

So, right. Dropping my bio major, which was never officially declared anyway. Picked up Psych, Anthro, Freshman Seminar (English Composition), Ancient Civ, and re-taking Bio1 just in case I do pursue a Bio major sometime and need that C (I got a C- last semester.... ugh).

As for my Freshman Seminar class, our topic is "Political Dissent After 9/11," which is a topic that hits home for me. Hence the reading material. Middletown, America is a book written about the experiences of those in my township (Middletown, NJ) post-9/11.

In highschool, I never bothered to read the book, and now that I am, I'm not extremely fond of the way that Ms. Sheehy portrays us, but the experiences are heart-wrenching and are very easy to empathize with.

So, if you're looking for something to read and you're sick of all those "Chicken Soup for the _____ Soul" books, I would (so far) suggest reading it.

Maybe you'll get to see some of my reactions in artwork down the line.

Thanks for everything,

Well, I'm bound for college... and this past month has been ridiculously stressful as results were sent back to me at an agonizing pace.

The fam. and I are going to check out VaTech two weeks from now, which is cool.

But anyway, if any of y'all care about all of the crazy stuff that's been setting me back from posting, the main reason it that I'm scanner-less... and haven't even thought about using the school's (go figure). So, for now I leave you with nothing but my post, but eventually, I'll put a bunch of things up here for you.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

So, as my entry title suggests, I just finished the brilliant Gregory Maguire's Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. It was about twenty times better than Wicked! The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West in my opinion. At any rate, it's brill and should be read.

On another note, my aunt took me to see Mamma Mia! today. What a heart-meltingly amazing musical! Made me cheer Sophie the whole way through, get upset for Donna, and had me on edge.

I can also swear that Judy McLane was looking me in the eyes (Tanya) at the end of the play. (Probably because I was beaming, on the edge of my seat, and drinking everything in as if I would die otherwise)

Afterwards, my aunt and I went to Ruby Foos for some hardcore pan-Asian cuisine.

NYC is my life. I think I'd die if I didn't live so close to it. Who could live without Broadway? It's... unthinkable.
Ms. Stean's subbing, though, so it's not so bad. Thinking of knitting something for the Nordt to be proud of (hehe).

Hurrah for finishing the last HS midterms I'll ever have to take (All you MHSS and MHSN seniors: if you tell me that the English midterm took you more than half an hour, I forsake you as my friend).

Unfortunately, though, the mad crazy stuff I've been drawing has no scanner to help post..... I'm trying to hook up my ex-printer/copier/scanner, but my computer doesn't believe the USB port exists whenever I try to hook up the pseudo plug-and-play.

Not to mention my brother has completely desecrated my computer by bogging it down with craploads of spyware that load themselves on every moment I'm not looking (actually, I could be looking, I could run anti-spyware programs one-after-another and there would STILL be spyware left to find).

Death to spyware and my nakedness due to constantly being connected to this marvelous thing called The Internet. -.-

*sigh*

On a lighter note, I get to paint tomorrow! Woo!

When he was little, the only things he'd draw were:
1.) trucks
2.) smiley-faced heart-headed stick men with top hats
3.) green dinosaurs with red sweaters.

Mom never understood the red sweater bit, but hey, whatever.
