Getting busier with my international trading business and management consulting firm--which is a good sign for some growing companies. I'll be on the road soon visiting clients and hopefully getting a chance to explore new places (with my camera gear).

Just received my 2009 commission check from deviantART today. It's been fun building a small local manufacturing facility into a true international business with a distribution network covering the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. However, it was time for something different and more challenging.

During the past three weeks I have been busy setting up my own international trading company to service a variety of industries with high-tech products. By finding new applications with existing products, we can offer instant and economical solutions to our clients. For others that may require more sophisticated industrial products to streamline their factories, we can provide innovative and energy-efficient equipment to meet their needs.

I believe one must be prepared with a good plan for every opportunity, but a good plan without proper execution is useless. If I don't answer your inquiries in a timely manner--it's because I'm executing those big plans!

Thank you for your visit and comments.
Peace and happiness to all!

===========================================

F.A.Q.

I'm a painter/sketch artist, may I use your photo(s) as reference?
Feel free to use my photos as reference to your drawings/paintings.
Coming into 2008 I had accumulated about twelve weeks of paid vacation time. It had been almost three years since I took a real vacation so I decided to take some time off from work and go on a cross-country trip heading west. Once in a while I'd stop the car and check out landscape scenes in places such as Plainfield (Indiana) or Marshfield (Missouri). Found some rather interesting desert views across Texas. Did some drifting around large sand dunes in New Mexico. Hiked at the Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon in Arizona. Photographed evening scenes at Hoover Dam and Las Vegas while in Nevada. Spent a wonderful week between San Diego and San Francisco in California. Visited a few national parks in Utah. Went through the freezing Rocky Mountain of Colorado. Stopped at Topeka Zoo in Kansas and then at St. Louis in Missouri before arriving home.

During this road trip, I crossed more than a dozen states and over 7,400 miles (11900 km) in about twenty-five days. Witnessed eagles diving into a lake for fish; had a close encounter with some amazing cows in a desert farm and stood between a wild deer herd grazing in a mountain. Found a lone seal on a beach; looked over the Pacific Ocean from a lighthouse; and got a unique perspective of a waterfall as it splashed against the rocks before me. Walked around the Gila Cliff Dwellings for a feel of the past; drove alongside some small twisters as they joined together and formed spectacular sandstorms; and watched the sun set in the horizon as the moon and stars took over the sky. Went shopping in Las Vegas and loaded my car with tons of goodies instead of spending money at the casinos. Did some high-speed driving across the deserts and a couple amazing rally-style time trials through the mountains. Interviewed a rock-balancing artist along San Francisco Bay and got invited to a personal behind-the scene tour at St. Louis Zoo. All these and many other interesting stories, places and faces that I will not soon forgetÂ

It was definitely a lifetime experience seeing so much in such short period of time, but these fortunate incidences wouldn’t have been so exciting without the many people I met along the way… so thanks to all of those “friendly locals” for telling me about their unique points of interest that aren’t listed on maps. I’m also grateful to every single one of you that made suggestions to check out different cool spots in your states from Missouri to California. Please be patient as it will take me months to go through my photo journal and select my favorite images to post on my DA accounts.

On a personal note, I recently cut my long hair and donated it to Locks of Love [link] It’s a nice non-profit organization assisting financially disadvantaged children so please help if you can. I’m currently volunteering as a graphic artist to create a series of READ posters used by the American Library Association to promote reading at a local public library. I’m also working on photo materials for two monthly solo exhibits to be showcased later in September and October. Will also have some limited prints and 2009 wall calendars for sale later this year (with proceeds going to my charity and scholarship funds).

Last but not least, my most sincere gratitude to my cousin Ben for taking care of my pack of Siberian Huskies while I was gone and to Paulette and Liz for their hospitality while I visited southern California earlier this month. Paulette was kind enough to invite my brother and me to the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park for some fantastic shots of the giant pandas and other incredible wildlife. She and Liz also treated me to a wonderful surprise birthday dinner during my stay. Thanks for being such good friends!

It's good to be back!

Best wishes for peace and happiness to all!

Paulette’s Gallery
Liz’s Gallery
<img cl...

Lately there are few people asking me about my work and how I get them exhibited locally. So read this if you are an inspired artist and would like to showcase your work in your city:

WHERE AND HOW CAN I GET STARTED?
Ever checked out your school, community center, or even fitness center’s hallways? Do you have any public art gallery nearby? That’s where you can get started and you won’t have to pay a cent for the space! Have some samples of your best work and put together a small personal portfolio. Once you get approved, prepare for the show… If you are on a tight budget, make your own prints at home or have them done cost-effectively at your local photo processing places. Purchase discounted pre-made, standard size, frames (such as 5”x7” or 8”x10” ) for your artwork or make your custom frames if you are crafty. With some effort and planning you can have a nice public exhibit without spending all your savings on it.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Before you continue, you should know that things really got out of control for me... I really enjoy photography as a hobby and I get easily inspired by just about everything I see. This past year I went from a basic Canon Digital Rebel XT to an EOS 30D, then bought a new EOS 1D Mark III and a bunch of Canon lenses and miscellaneous Bogen-Manfrotto accessories. Like I said, it got out of control!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON EXHIBITING YOUR WORK?
The first time, I approached a public art gallery and asked them to check out my portfolio (about 300 individual 8”x10” prints). I requested for some space and a month of exposure. In exchange, I offered to donate all profits from my sales to purchase new books for the local public library. They immediately gave me three consecutive months of exhibit time. After the initial couple of weeks, a local newspaper published an article about my work and objective; subsequently they gave me an additional four months at the gallery. Another art gallery director heard about my photos and booked me for two separate exhibitions at a nearby city... that was last year.

WHAT TYPE OF PRINTS DO YOU MAKE?
All my earlier prints were produced by CMYK printing presses on vinyl, boarded, laminated then framed. Each one of them measured approx. 28"x20" in size and cost me a small fortune for production. For every month there were between seven to fifteen prints exhibited at each location. My basement is full of framed and unframed prints from my previous exhibits. Sometimes I hang them up then switch them around my house, depending on the season.

HAVE YOU EVER SOLD ANY OF YOUR WORK?
Few dozen large prints were eventually sold to local businesses and private clients. Three additional prints made their way to Brazil and I never reproduced any of those unique prints as of today.

HOW DO YOU FUND YOUR PUBLIC EXHIBITS?
Fortunately, I have a career in international business (which I enjoy) and it pays for all my public exhibition materials, travel fees, photo equipment and other cool toys. Although money isn’t an issue, time is always critical… Those people that think “time is money” are wrong! Most people on Earth can make money, somehow, but none of us is capable of creating time. Therefore time is not money--it is life. So if you’re still young, spend your time wisely and have a good life. If you’re getting older, live the rest of your life as if there’s no tomorrow.

WHO DECIDES WHAT YOU EXHIBIT?
This year I only chose to do three local exhibits (August, October and December) and volunteered to conduct two community workshops due to my busy schedule. Those free workshops focused on showing others, based on my limited experience, basic photography and digital imaging. My current exhibit consists of a dozen autumn photos, grouped in sets of three, in matching contemporary small frames. Fortunately, the art gallery’s director allows me to choose my subjects and freedom to frame and hang up my own work.

WHY DON’T YOU HAVE A dA PRINT ACCOUNT?
Why… would you buy my prints? Seriously, it’s not my intention to seek approval, recognition, nor make money from selling prints. My goal is simple: show my work to the public and hope to inspire somebody else in getting out of the house and taking photography as a new hobby. Based on feedbacks from those visiting my exhibits and some fellow deviants, I believe I’ve done a decent job thus far.

WHAT’S NEXT?
I’ll be taking a break from work at the office and be with my family and friends during the next few weeks. Plan on doing some traveling to neighboring states around mid-east USA (with my photo...

- I visit zoos almost every weekend, sometimes two in different cities.

- How long do you wait for “the shot” at each exhibit?
- It depends; sometimes it could take a couple hours or longer (but it’s worth the wait).

- How do you get your zoo photos to look natural?
- I try to avoid foreign objects (signs, fences, electrical lines, brick walls, etc.)

- How do you get rid of reflections when shooting through glass?
- Here are my simple techniques: [link]

- What cameras do you use?
- They are all Canon digitals: 1D Mark III, 30D, Rebel XT, Powershot Pro1, and (a very old) Elph S100.

- What are your favorite lenses for your DSLR’s?
- They are all Canon lenses listed here: [link]

- How long have you been doing photography?
- I’ve been snapping photos since I was a child, but did not get serious until 2005.

- Do plan on selling your images?
- Yes, will have 2008 (12-month) calendars for sale later this year. Proceeds will go to my charities.

Once again, it’s an honor to share my nature/wildlife photography with you and I hope you’ll continue enjoying my work. I truly appreciate your words of encouragement and the inspiration you have given me through your work as well. As always, your constructive criticism is welcomed.

Peace and happiness to all!
Best regards,

Thanks to all of you whom faved and/or featured my work. It's an honor to share my photos with you and I hope you'll continue enjoying them. I also appreciate the time you have taken to comment on my work or to inquire about photo-related issues. I read every comment and try to respond each note whenever I get a chance.

Recently I've been receiving some criticism about my use of copyright watermarks on actual images. The good news is that they work and the bad news is that they are staying. I'd rather mark my original work than wasting my precious time fighting someone to regain my copyright. If you have any hate mail or would like to contact me outside of DA, my E-Mail address is: photosooper@hotmail.com

In just a few days I'll be displaying some of my new conceptual work at a local art gallery. It will be open to the public seven days per week throughout the month of August. Proceeds from the sales will go to my charity fund.

Three of my large prints from last year's exhibits are on their way to São Paulo, Brazil. I'm also negotiating to have additional pieces to be exhibited at an art gallery in northwestern France. More follow-up news later...

Peace and happiness to all!
Regards,

Like many digital photographers today, I rely on Photoshop for processing and editing. Well, each time I pick up a camera I think of different ways to capturing unique images. Once that’s achieved (sometimes after couple hundred shots) I consider my options for final composition (cropping, framing, etc.) The more I get into this hobby each day; I’m drawn towards simplicity… I mean taking natural quality photos without spending time enhancing them on my laptop, but how?

After spending my entire lifetime savings (just kidding) I finally found the answer I was seeking: lenses and filters! Yes, as a beginner I thought that two to three lenses should be sufficient for my DSLR kit. Then I checked out many awesome images on DA and realized that attaching the appropriate lens to a body is as vital as getting the right camera settings before each shoot. So in about a year’s time I built up a small kit consisting of two bodies, six lenses, and a dozen filters.

Next time I’ll present the filters that I’ve been using on my lenses to save time on post-process. For now, let’s focus on three lenses that worked for my Digital EOS (Rebel XT and 30D) systems. Under artist’s comment, you may notice most of my recent deviations have been shot with one of these following lenses:

Until about a week ago, I've been using my versatile Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens [link] on most of my indoor/outdoor photo shoots. This 72mm dia. lens is well constructed with image stabilizer feature that allows capturing great action shots with or without flash application. It's a fairly light lens with quick zooming and well-priced for amateur photographers.

Recently, I outfitted my Canon 30D with a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (77mm dia.) lens [link] and wow... that little bit of extra reach to 200mm at constant f/2.8 makes a great difference! This high-end telephoto zoom lenses is tough enough for wildlife photography yet civilized for urban and wedding scenes. If you don’t mind carrying a heavier lens, this one opens doors to new possibilities!

Another great Canon lens is the compact-sized EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (58mm dia.) [link] which captures sharp images with natural, eye-pleasing, depth-of-field. I primarily use this lens for still life and portraits, but it also comes in handy for many creative shots outside the studio. Definitely worth every penny!

Thanks for your visit and happy shooting!

While photographing on location, many people have asked me how I capture action shots and how to avoid reflection when shooting through fences or glass windows at zoos and aquariums. If you follow these simple steps, I can promise that you’ll get better results on your next trip to a zoo/aquarium:

STEP 1:
Check your camera equipment. Set your camera to ISO 100 or 200 for still subjects and ISO 400 (800 if necessary) and apply burst mode (if available) for action shots. If you have a lens hood use it to block unwanted light. Use a monopod or a tripod to minimize camera shake. Telephoto zoom (for outdoors) and macro (for aquariums) lenses are recommended for SLR users. Turn off digital-zoom feature on non-SLR cameras.

STEP 2:
Spend time to study your subjects. Wild animals are unpredictable, but sometimes there’s a pattern to their daily activities while in captivity. Note the paths they take when pacing around their enclosure and locate ideal locations at the exhibit to shoot. If the animals are asleep, wait a while or come back at a later time to catch them in action.

STEP 3:
Anticipate and stand by for action. Now that you have observed how they move, which way they turn, and where they look… just keep your finger on the trigger and shoot away when your subjects are in focus. You only have a split second to capture the moment so be ready!

STEP 4:
Reflections and glares usually ruin the shots through glass windows, unless that’s your artistic/conceptual intention. I use the black side of my collapsible 5-in-1 reflector/deflector kit to solve this problem. If you don’t have this tool, you can achieve the same effect by wearing something dark and use your body to reflect a dark spot on the glass to shoot through it.

STEP 5:
If you must use flash at an aquarium, try to have your lens against the glass to avoid flash light reflection. Remember to remove the hood attached to your long lens; otherwise it will cast a shadow on your image. If you have macro, use it to capture those fine details. Sometimes a diffuser on your flash unit may help getting rid of that harsh shadow and soften the background.

STEP 6:
The technique to shoot through vertical wire or chain-link fences is very simple: find any gap between the fence, zoom in through it, focus on your subject (particularly the eyes), and snap! This works much better when you are closer to the fence while the animal is farther away from it.

BONUS TIP:
You’ll find many zoo animals active during early morning when they come out on exhibit or later in the evening before they are put away. Try to show up a bit earlier and/or stick around a little longer—you’ll have a better chance to capture unique moments.

Happy shooting and let me know if you would like more tips like this.
