Current Theme: Magic

Submissions due by: July 30th, Midnight EST
Theme: Magic
Guidelines:
Create a new piece that has a theme around the idea of Magic. Be creative! Please make sure you follow all the rules in this journal.

How to Submit:
Send us a note with the subject MAGIC CONTEST. Make sure to include a link to the piece you want to submit to this contest.

How Often Will Contests Be Held?

Contests will be held every two weeks.

How Are Themes Picked?

We gathered member's opinions on how to pick themes, and here's how it works. =Space-Club will hold a poll with 10 options, and you guys vote for the one you like the most. Feel free to send in suggestions for a theme, and we will make sure to include it in the poll. The next theme poll we hold, we will drop the winning theme and the theme(s) with no votes or the least amount of votes, so we will cycle out the ones we've used and the ones that people don't appear to have much interest in.

How Will Contests Be Judged?

We are going to do this old school =Apophysis style. For those unfamiliar with what this means... keep reading. We will post a weekly news journal with thumbs of all the entries on the day the contest ends. Each thumb will be labeled with a number, the title, and deviant. To vote, members should simply leave a comment with the number of your favorite submission. The submission with the most votes is the winner. We will also post the runner ups and any ties.

How Long Will Judging/Voting Be?

Two weeks. This gives plenty of time for everyone to vote, and is further explained below.

Can the Admins Submit?

Yes. Because the voting is done by the members, and all the admins here would enjoy being able to take part in the fun, we have decided that it is fair for the staff to submit pieces to the bi-weekly contests as well.

Can A Member Who Submitted Vote For Themselves?

No. This is the most simple answer, it would be an unfair and biased vote. Submitters *CAN* vote, just not for their own entry.

Can the Admins Vote?

Yes. An admin's single vote means as much a member's single vote.

How Do We Know Who Wins?

The winner of the contest will be posted the day the next contest begins. This is sort of hard to explain, but we'd like for it to be a nice continuous cycle. When *Contest A* ends, there will immediately be another *Contest B* beginning. When *Contest B* ends, the winners of *Contest A* will be posted, voting for *Contest B* will start, and a new *Contest C* will begin.

Are there any Specifics that Members Should Know?

The only real specifics are that the submission must follow the theme. They can be any dimensions, with no limitations. Just make sure it's still space art, and have fun!

Does the Winner Get Any Prize?

If by prize you mean subscription or print or something physical, unfortunately, the answer is we do not have the funds to do that. The winner will be our featured deviation (we have tried a couple ways to handle the featured deviation, but this should take care of it completely) - and will be featured in our journal for two weeks.

What limits should we put on submissions?

The results are in...
38% (23 deviants) said Please don't put limits!!! (Surprised that many didn't want limits.)
18% (11 deviants) said Quality Control

So, apparently quite a few of you don't want limits. Not very many of you mentioned why... but that's okay. Thanks goes out to ~BlPh for a great suggestion, which unfortunately we didn't have in the poll for the first couple days. The majority ruled that at least 38 members DO want some form of limits, so here's what we've come up with that will be implemented in December.

It was pointed out to us amidst the poll that putting limits period was a form of quality control, as it will force members to consider which piece(s) to submit to our gallery. Thus said, we are going to go ahead and limit the number of submissions from one member per month to FOUR. This essentially means 1/week, however members are welcome to use their four at any time during the month.

If we ever do hold contests (see new poll), we will submit the winners submissions to our gallery, as well.

Other Community News

We will be choosing a new featured deviation every Friday from now on. These will be completely at random, and we will never feature a piece twice.

Should we put watermarks on images submitted to our gallery?

And the results are in...
50% (41 deviants) said No!
44% (36 deviants) said Yes!
6% (5 deviants) said Other!

Surprisingly large number of results. We will be running polls more often as they seem more effective than journals asking for suggestions. But, getting to the point. We had been using watermarks on our images to encourage viewers to go visit the original or at least read the description. This has rendered relatively ineffective, as we still get favorites constantly, and even the occasional comment that is almost a verbal whip lash at us for using them.

A barely majority of voters (as you can see) said no we shouldn't use watermarks, and a couple people suggested just using the smallest image size that we can for submissions. So, as of the next time we upload submissions, that is how it is going to be. We will do a trial run of it, and see how it works out.

In the mean time we have a new poll up to gather ideas on how to limit submissions. We have an awful system currently, and members' message centers are probably getting filled to the brim with things they don't even want to see. In the end there will be limits placed no matter what, so here's your chance to have a say in how it happens.

Updates, and such

Hey everybody! ~the-wasd-man here with a few updates on what's going on.

You might of noticed a lack of submission updates recently, well, don't worry, we're not slowly dying, I just got caught up with, well, the real world there for a little while. But all is well now, and I uploaded all of your submissions and even added quite a few new members to our club! Welcome!

Anyways,I was thinking about instituting a "submission day" of sorts, so that instead of just updating the gallery on a semi-random basis, I would do it once a week (say Saturday). So instead of getting a few jumbled updates, you'd get a bunch of them at (almost) the same time. Plus it would be a good way to remind me to do the uploads. I just wanted to know your thoughts on that, so leave a comment!

Also, just letting you know that our submission pack is still running. We didn't get too many submissions, so if anyone was feeling like submitting something, well, you still can! And please do!

Um... that's about it for now. Stay Shiny guys and gals!

More Updates and Such!

This time, =Lizzys reporting! Well, we are now officially over two years old and running stronger than ever. Way back in the day, I had once said we would choose a senior member once every 6 months, and that is (rather obviously) long overdue. So, in the next coming week, please keep in mind that we are watching you and will be choosing at least two new senior members to make up for missed months.

In more boring news, I made the rest of the journals look just as pretty as this one. Yay?

News

Subscription... I gave in a bought one. And now our journal has pretty CSS and thumbs are now an option in case we finally getting around to holding contests.

Weekly Features... I'm trying to figure out how to do something fair with the featured deviation. If anyone has any possible ideas please leave a comment or send us a note!

Admins still needed... At this point its so much of a need that no one needs to pay attention to the part that says do no apply if you've only been a member for a day. About

We had a few people suggest releasing themed wallpaper packs, so we're going to give it a try. This journal will consist of requirements for entering a piece into our packs, information about present, past, and upcoming packs, etc...

We're coming up with ways to pick the next theme, for now =Lizzys has just been using very generic ones, but we could open a poll with a few ideas and a place for input and suggestions.

How to Submit a Piece into a Pack

First, make sure this is a piece that shows your utmost talent, creativity, and uniqueness. We want a diverse pack that shows your best!

Next, make sure it meets all the submission requirements (explained below). We will be going through all submissions and clearing out ones that don't meet the requirements.

Finally, send us a note with the subject PACK SUBMISSION. This note just needs to include a link to your piece, and we will do the rest!

Submission Requirements

Dimensions: 1600 x 1200 pixels. Always. This is a pretty large sized desktop, but it makes it easier for people with smaller desktops to scale them down to fit.

Themes are not just put there as a suggestion. If your pack submission doesn't follow the theme, its not going to be put in the pack. In general the theme will be pretty vague and allow you to use a lot of creativity. For example, the current theme, Winter, could simply be inclusion of cool colors.

Due Dates aren't really set in stone. If you send in your submission a day late, we can probably still include it, so don't fret too much. We'd like to have the Winter Pack out by January 1st.

Should we put watermarks on images submitted to our gallery?

And the results are in...
50% (41 deviants) said No!
44% (36 deviants) said Yes!
6% (5 deviants) said Other!

Surprisingly large number of results. We will be running polls more often as they seem more effective than journals asking for suggestions. But, getting to the point. We had been using watermarks on our images to encourage viewers to go visit the original or at least read the description. This has rendered relatively ineffective, as we still get favorites constantly, and even the occasional comment that is almost a verbal whip lash at us for using them.

A barely majority of voters (as you can see) said no we shouldn't use watermarks, and a couple people suggested just using the smallest image size that we can for submissions. So, as of the next time we upload submissions, that is how it is going to be. We will do a trial run of it, and see how it works out.

In the mean time we have a new poll up to gather ideas on how to limit submissions. We have an awful system currently, and members' message centers are probably getting filled to the brim with things they don't even want to see. In the end there will be limits placed no matter what, so here's your chance to have a say in how it happens.

We will be choosing a new featured deviation every Friday from now on. These will be completely at random, and we will never feature a piece twice.

Many club members probably do not realize that there is a set of general club etiquette that should be obeyed in this club as well as others. We have previously received complaints of members (names will not be listed) which have called for the addition of this journal.

Following is a list of club etiquette that should be followed when submitting, commenting, critiquing, and sending notes, etc.

Degradation

Whatever you do, do NOT degrade anyone nor anyone's art. If they ask for critique, then give them critique - however, keep in mind...

Critique is not: "I like the concept but its badly done."
Critique is: "I like the concept that has been used here, but next time you might want to try to use a different texture or color, make more stars, try a different landscape... etc."

Critique will help an artist get better, not make them feel worse.

Politeness

Be polite. This is a pretty self-explanatory guideline. Don't embarrass yourself by not following it.

Sarcasm

Rude sarcasm will not be tolerated. It is hard enough to detect when someone is being sarcastic online because no tone of voice is heard. So be especially cautious when you're being rude and using sarcasm.

Spam

Just don't. Simple enough.

Common Sense

Use your common sense. If something you're thinking of isn't on this list, that doesn't make it okay to do. And if someone thinks of something that should be added to this list, let us know.

Victims

Please! if you are a victim of any of the above behavior, let =Space-Club know. Send =Space-Club a note and we will deal with the situation best as possible. Our goal is to have a beneficial community, not a degrading one.

Anyone who dismisses the above as childish crap and refuses to obey will receive punishment. You will get a warning and then be released from the club if you continue to ignore our club etiquette.

The club would like to personally apologize to those who have already received and witnessed the childish behavior of some of our club members. Again, please let us know who needs to be taken care of.

Send us a note with the subject Collaboration. In the note just let us know that you're open to collaborations, and tell us what you're willing to do in the collaboration, be it a background image, landscape, planets and starfields, etc.

Upon receiving your collaboration note, we will add you to the list. Hopefully overtime a good amount of people will be added to the list to create more options. Make sure a note is received from the =Space-Club telling you that you've been added to the list.

Find Someone to Collaborate With

(Eventually) below you will find a list of people willing to do collaborations. Make sure to look at what parts of a collaboration they are willing to do, and if you find someone you'd like to do a collaboration with, send them (and/or us a note). If they agree, then goodluck to you both and hopefully your collaboration turns out well!

Make sure that if you have found someone to do a collaboration with, your name gets taken off the list (unless of course you're really dedicated and want to work on more than one collab at a time!)

How to Submit:
Send us a note with the subject AVATAR & ID SUBMISSION. Make sure to include a link to both the Avatar and ID you wish to submit.

Judging:
When we get to this point, we are going to do this old school =Apophysis style. We will post a weekly news journal with thumbs of all the entries. To vote members should simply leave a comment with your favorite submission. This will be mentioned in the journal with thumbs as well, in case you forget.

Since we're not really sure how we get CSS submissions, we're leaving this a bit open ended for now. All you members should send in lots of comments and notes with suggestions for how we could set this up. It would be nice to hold off on this until we have an avatar & ID so members can maybe match them with the journal CSS, or whatever they feel like. Once we figure out a way to get submissions in, journals could be set up to demonstrating each CSS submission and members could vote on the journal they like best, but we want to hear other opinions and suggestions first.

This was made with the intention that after we attract a few visitors and members, we can use it as a place to share art and just chat in general. Along side #Spacious we have #SCAdmin, which is the place for all =Space-Club staff members, obviously. If any visitors or members have questions, they are welcome to join us and ask the administration directly.

Yes, There Are Rules

Following are rules that apply to both dAmn chats, however the groups and privileges are slightly different in #SCAdmin.

Please read the section about at least whatever group you are in and follow the privileges that you get for your group. Aside from those, please make sure to abide by the following information as well.

Spam and Flooding

Do not spam! There is nothing more annoying than to have someone interrupt a conversation by flooding links and repeated words, etc. Spamming will result in a kick, and repeat offenders may suffer a ban.

Right along side of spam is flooding. Where you enter the chat and constantly feel the need to hit enter every point five seconds. Or that other thing where you enter and leave the chatroom over and over. The only exception there is if you manage to tell us you have a crappy connection before someone bans you.

Lyricizing

Please try not to lyricize too much either. We understand that you may be listening to the catchiest tune in the world, but not everyone agrees on music choices, so if you're typing lyrics to Britney Spears and the rest of the chat is moaning and groaning, that may well be your hint to stop.

Learn How to Use Caps Lock

CAPS are ANNOYING. PLEASE avoid USING them OFTEN. Especially lIkE ThIs, bEcAuSe CoNtRaRy To PoPuLaR oPiNiOn, iT dOeS nOt LoOk cOoL.

The Debate Team

Debates are welcome, just try not to let it get too out of control to the point where you're scaring away the wee little visitors. We're trying to attract people, not make them fear us.

If You Got It, Flaunt It

We encourage flaunting your art. Everyone except those who are banned are allowed to post up to at least five thumbs - use it to your advantage! If you want critique, comments, 's, feel free to post and ask! Just don't become too pushy, or you may push the wrong person's button in a little too far. We ask that you don't flood the room with a bunch of thumbs though, try to keep it to a point where other people can share their art too.

Swearing

Yeah, you bet I'm going to tell you not to. Well, you're wrong. If you've just screwed something all to hell, well god damnit, keeping your anger locked up inside is some annoying shit. We only request that if there is someone in the room who becomes offended and asks you to keep swearing to a minimal, please respect their wishes.

Power Abuse

If you see anyone abusing the powers they've been given and there is no staff around to help, please send a note to the club or one of the staff members. We will try to make sure they are dealt with as best as possible. Also, if you see someone disrespecting the above rules, please let a member of the staff know. We'd prefer to keep the chat pest free.

Kicks and Bans

Kicks will result if someone is seen abusing the above rules. Depending on how annoying the person has been will depend upon how many chances they get. If they are a repeat offender, a temporary or permanent ban may be in order. You will be warned once before getting kicked, and if you continue to abuse you will be warned about ban possibilities, so please be kind and follow our simple guidelines.

So you want to join the =Space-Club! Well that's good, we appreciate your interest! Fortunately, through notes, joining is made very simple. All you have to do is send us a note with the subject Join. You don't even have to say anything in the note (of course that's optional, if you want to, feel free!). We'd prefer it if you added us to your watch list, but if you forget or for some reason don't want to, that is okay. We understand that some people just want to get a little more recognition for there works and don't want the clutter in their message center.

Be Aware of not watching our journals. We update them constantly with community news, polls, pack, and contest information, so we highly advise to at least watch the journals. You might miss out on the fun bi-weekly contests and the voting for them!

Submissions

So you're all joined and now you want to submit something to add to our growing gallery! We simply ask that you send us a note with the subject Submission. Unlike the join note, this one must include a link to the deviation you want us to add to our gallery. We will add a link to your original submission in the description and ask that all s and comments be directed there.

Please, please, please at least drop your s to the original artist. The =Space-Club itself did not create the image itself, one of our talented artists did and please give them the respect they deserve.

We disable comments and use the smallest image size on all submissions in an attempt to get people to go visit the original. For those people that fail at following rules, we do send a note requesting them to redirect the .

How Many Pieces Can I Submit?

Implementation date: December 2008. We will only be accepting four submissions per member, per month. This is to prevent everyone's message centers from overfilling with submissions that have little to no quality control on them. Quality control is your job, not ours. If you want to only display your best works here, that is fine. However, if you want to display work that you know needs improvement, and you just want some critique, that is fine as well.

If we ever start up regular contests, we will add the winning submissions to the gallery as well.

Please be mindful of our submission limits. We will keep track, and if you go over the limit, we will notify you and you can choose to have us upload it the next month, or save it for something else instead.

What to Submit to the Club

Anything that includes the likes of outer space in it. If the piece has a planet in it, galaxy, stars, etc. as a main point of interest, we will add it. We've previously let some submissions slide through, such as comics and fractals that might pass as space art, however, with the increased number of members and submissions, we are going to start filtering out images that we do not find fitting.

We plan to start doing regular clean ups to filter out old images soon. If they are in the 25th page in our gallery, chances of anybody going that far back to see them is not very high, so you aren't benefiting anyway.

Applying to the Staff

So you've been a =Space-Club member for a good while now and you think you're ready to take on a job helping out the club. Awesome! =Space-Club was once a relatively small community, not in too much need of a huge staff at the moment. However - now we've grown, but the staff has remained nearly the same size. If you're interested in helping out the =Space-Club please continue reading!

Space-Club Staff Requirements

You must be an active member of the club for some time - meaning you contribute to the gallery, comment on fellow club member's works, and show just some general interest. If you've only been a member of the club for two days, don't bother applying. We will likely look at your application, however chances are extremely slim that you will be selected. The current staff here must recognize that you are a worthy addition to the club and will not take your Admin promotion for granted.

Applying for the Staff

By applying to any part the Staff, you will be entrusted with the password to the club. If you are caught giving it out for any reason, you will be immediately removed from the admin (and possibly entire club depending on severity). We have divided the staff into sections, so there are specific jobs to apply for.

Staff Positions and Descriptions

To note, we would like to have at least one staff member for all of the below. We are now a pretty prominent group and there is an overload of things that need to be taken care of around here.

Admins: Process notes, new members, submissions, take care of misplaced favorites, answer questions, update journals, bring new ideas to the community, etc..

Member Inducers: Pretty self-explanatory position; take care of anyone wishing to join our community. Add new members to our watch, journal, and chat, and go through the message center and double check if new watchers just wanted to watch or wanted to join (you'd be amazed how many people watch us and think that means they're a part of the club now).

Submissions Department: This section of staff will probably require the largest number of people, due to the fact that it is the most time consuming job (right after admin...). The submissions department will be commiting their time to uploading submissions from our members to the gallery, as well as taking care of gallery clean ups.

Demotion

Half of the time, people just want to be part of the staff for the recognition. However, we will notice, and if you aren't being helpful to us at all, you will be demoted. It isn't worth anyone's time or the hassle to have an staff spot filled with someone doing nothing for the club. We will remove you from our staff and replace you with someone who we hope will put some use to the spot you left. If sometime later down the line you manage to prove yourself worthy again, we will hold no hard feelings against you and reconsider you for a staff position. Another reason for demotion would be giving out the club or email password. If we happen to find out, you will be immediately removed from the club staff and further punishment will be discussed depending on the damage done. If this is the case, you will not ever be allowed to return to position on our staff.

Staff Members Unable to Commit Time

If you no longer have the time to contribute to the =Space-Club you are welcome to remove yourself from the staff. If you were helpful during your time, you will be added to a former staff list, so you continue to get the respect you deserve. If you ever decide to return to the staff, you will be considered before other applicants, provided you did your job well previously.
