I am happy to announce a jam which I believe will prove a fitting challenge to many artists here.

It all began with a set of double art trades I did with not too long ago. Both his parts of our trade concerned a new unofficial coupling to V's "harem of fan-couples, failed dates and genuine affection" [link] (as puts it) between the extraterrestrial bee-girl Bootsi Q and V.

Anyway, the couple intrigued me, as Johann knows how to write up a great backstory to any given situation depicted in his spectacular art. So I challenged him to draw up a what-if scenario of either a wedding or a child of such a couple. He chose to go with the child approach, and the result was spectacular!

THE TASK!

It's all about creating an OC that is the result of two OCs from different creators having entered parenthood. Heck, the parents doesn't even have to make sense! Go wild!

RULES/REQUIREMENTS/GUIDELINES:

- Character must be the child of two different creators' OCs.
- Try to be creative with the concept. Don't simply name the character Vigil II or something like that.
- A fictional written backstory isn't required, but not forbidden either.
- Please, ask for permission from the creator before you get to work.
- Entries can be in single picture or comic form.
- All sorts of parents welcome! Lesbians, gays, transsexuals, unidentified, all!
- Anything goes! Are the parents unable to have children in some way? Have them adopt one and raise it. Use cloning technology. Anything!

But anyway, it will be my first Virtus project completed fully on my own. No extra artists, just me.



But in order to do this comic project, I need to have questions about Virtus, related to himself, his mythos and world. It can be already asked questions, it can be completely new questions. The importance is, I want to be able to write them down.

Examples:

What is V's sexual preference?
Why the red/black/white?
Why the secret identity?
What is it that motivates V?
What world does V live in?
What city does he live in?

The only catch is that I want you to put those questions down here, and expect that you will have to wait for the answer in comic form, but the deadline for new questions is August 1st 2009 . There's no real limit to the ammount of questions you want to ask, and it can be silly questions or perhaps even philosophical questions, plus you can come back from time to time with new ones.

There are some spoilerish questions you might have that I will not answer in this DA Exclusive, but I will make sure to inform you all that those answers are classified until further notice, so you won't be sitting on the edge in waiting for them.

If I approve or disapprove of a question for the project, you will get either one of the following replies.

1) Approved. That's a question that definately will get answered in the comic project.
2) Disapproved. A rude question will not be answered.
3) No comment. This is the answer for questions that touch too much on the future of Virtus, and would spoil too much of my plans.

I will throw in short personal thoughts on the questions also, so you'll know that I actually have read every reply.

Once I have all the questions, I will write a script based on them, and then begin work on the comic. My hopes is that it will be done around Spring 2010, so that I can test how far I can go. The final product will then be put up, page by page, here on DA.

So get cracking on some questions, and remember, you can always come back to ask something new! Once again, the deadline is August 1st!

I got a chance to hang with my associates and my bosses Fredrik Jelcander and Thomas Fels in real-life. I had a really good... no, spectacular time!! The music was a bit loud when the concert was held in that relatively small area though. Great music, but too loud!

Nevertheless, I used some well-spent money to buy several items from indy creators, each of them with their own charm.

Instead of specific years when relating to past events, I tried a different approach with different months slapped onto adventures, and the "X years ago" approach when referring to past events.

The first Virtus arc will run through a fictional fall, more specifically September-November, but it's not clear what year the month runs through. That way, I keep the timelessness of it being either last year's month or current month depending on when the reader read's it. The point is, I'll be able to keep the retcons to a minimum, with little mention of WWII, 9/11, etc.

For example, here's a line that I came up with in the spur of the moment for Supremus, a 90-ish Superman homage hero...

Supremus - 'World War II taught me...'

It can be interpreted both ways. Either as that he fought in it, or that World War II inspired him in a different way. Perhaps he watched it in a documentary, or perhaps he was active during the Cold War, seeing the consequences of the wat. Only time will tell, as he, in my master plan, is 94 years old. Which would set his birth in 1915 by 2009, 1916 by 2010... and so on. A floating timeline, with no years mentioned, only ages.

My dream of a timeline with years and dates will instead be used in an alternate universe concept, where everything happens in real-time on the Earth-R of my own multiverse.

Rocket and Bounce, created by Gene Kelly are two superhero siblings still new to the game as superheroes, yet still manages to save the day while squabbling on who takes the thugs on the right or left.

Maverick, created by Angela Peak , is a mercenary with a no-nonsense attitude and a harsh mouth, always on the move for the next gig on her superfast feet.

I'm having a ton of artwork piling up in my messages section, but when I try to delete more than one at a time, it takes forever just for the message center to go Error: "Unable to delete messages at this time."

Is it possible that the antenna on my DSL router is damaged? Because all the other three computers in my house (including the laptop downstairs) are having the same problem. It doesn't bother anyone else in the family, since I'm the only one who's a frequent user of DA.. But it's very frustrating on my nerves...

Any help, suggestions or other tips would be nice.

These characters are homages to the people that means a lot to me, some of them old friends, some of them fellow creators, some of them just awesome people!

We all know that I am the God of the Virtusverse. I overlook everything, making it part of the great design. But recently, I revealed my Virtus multiverse to the general public. Sadly, I cannot use the concept just yet, but I can still plan out things beforehand! ^_^

Anyways, there's one very special alternate Earth, called Earth-W. Designated W because it comes right after V, which is the main Virtusverse.

On this Earth, I have not decided on anything, for any characters. I wanted to make an Earth on which I could release my iron grip and let someone else be in charge. So I got the semi-brilliant idea to do an "Ultimate Marvel" type of universe. The idea sprang partly from this piece...

I'm allowed to use the design and idea, but then I figured: "Why stop there?"

The main goal of this jam is to make a whole new universe to become part of the official Multiverse canon. Every once in a while (perhaps once a year, maybe twice), I'll reveal a character to be revamped and restyled.

There are no winners and losers. I will mix and match ideas, designs and story ideas to create a perfect hybrid Virtus. Everyone gets their name attached to the revamped Virtus.

RULES:

In order to enter the jam, there are multiple choices.

Revamp Virtus's look! There's no wrong style, let your mind run rampant, design a new look, update the old, undress him, whatever!
Written entries are allowed. Perhaps you want to revamp the origin, or simply suggest a storyline for the alternate Virtus.

There are 26 Universes, plus three "Outer Realms" that none of the inhabitants can reach. Each universe is designated A-Z. I can't reveal everything just yet, but I can shed some light on details.

Earth-V is the main Virtusverse (The one you have all seen Virtusverse OCs from). Just cause I want to!

Earth A, B, C, F, G, I, J, K, M, N, R, S, and U are "alternate history" universes.

Earth D and H are semi-satiric universes.

Earth E, L, O, Q, X, Y and Z are universes that are homages to well known and traditional pararell dimensions in comic history.

This is a VERY hypothetical question, but here it comes.

If Virtus would ever get animated, which voice actor/screen actor lending his or her voice would make the best Seb Sanders/Virtus?

I was going to include a list of potential voice actours, but I don't know of that many who are not nigh-unreachable legends with billion salaries! (the famous Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Phil Lamarr etc.)

Nothing serious, just random fun. XD

THE GUIDE TO THE VIRTUSVERSE
(Inofficial name, as you all know by now.)

My "superworld" is heavily real-world, comics history and public domain inspired. There are no fictional countries or cities (at least not ones that I have conjured up) and draws inspiration for it's timeline from the Golden Age, the Atomic Age, The Silver Age, The Bronze Age and the Modern Age of Comic Books.

I'm currently pitching together a guide in Word-format, with pictures and information to accompany it. Each volume of the guide centers around an individual country's fictional basis in the Virtusverse, and I'm beginning with mine and Virtus native country, with such sections as heroes, villains, organizations and history.

Once I'm finished with the Sweden volume, which one should start on after that? Should I go next-door to the other Scandinavian countries, or should jump back and forth over the globe?

The famous Swedish hero Exo-Man is not acting like himself. Originally a model citizen who is known to have defeated Skum, the Living Foam and a wide assortments of other supervillains, he now ignores red lights and thunders through the city of Sala on his way to Västerås. But the most shocking revealation is the fact that he's carrying a bag-masked woman in his arms. Has the hero turned rogue? That's for Virtus to find out, but everything is not as it seems...

AFL Semi-finals

Well, my luck ran out on me this time, and I came in 4th in my group.

Can't say that I'm not disappointed, I was 1st for a couple of days. But those who won deserved it, they have shown both creativity and quality in their fights.

Plus, I can hardly wait to see what these people come up with in the three-way semi-finals:

VIRTUS: FORGING OF A HERO

Speaking of Virtus, the V-emblazoned speedster will soon be official. In the origin, you will see a far less powerful Seb Sanders at the start of his career.

The comic will be available in the Swedish superhero fanzine Svenska Superserier, on print in Sweden.

However, those who have requested a translated version will get it sent to them over the net around at the same date as the printed version enters shelves.

So stay tuned, in September/October, Lil' V will make his debut...

FILLING UP THE VIRTUSVERSE...

A project that I launched about two months back, in which I asked for permission to create new characters based on my closest DA friends to operate in my Virtusverse as friends, allies, and even solo characters. However, the co-creator still retains his right to use the character for anything he or she sees fit. So if you wanna add the character to your own rooster of OCs, then be my guest. ^^

THE PROCEDURE:

It's simple, really.

1. You give me a photo and your full name. (For giving the character a civilian look and a slightly tweaked name. If you want your true name to remain secret, however, I'll keep it secret. Also, your name will show up in co-creator boxes along with the character.

2. Choose your superpower. (Only ONE power is allowed. I give some of my creative thinking into it, and we'll soon have something actually original.)

3. Give me your favourite colour(s) and style of choice (Sexy like Witchblade or Vampirella, or conservative like Invisible Woman?) to create a costume.

4. Leave everything to me, but rest assured, you will get to have a say at everything that happens during the creation progress.

5. Don't be afraid to come with suggestions, because suggestions are always welcome. ^^

But anyways, onto the real topic...

How do YOU people establish real-life continuity?

It is well-established that even sci-fi/fantasy comics sometimes gains inspirations from real-life events. I mean, what comic medium haven't used World War II, Holocaust, 9/11, the Cold War and other themes as plot elements in their stories?

Still, people want to accomplish the seemingly impossible by establishing a fictional world where the original origins (such as Spidey's, Batmans etc.) and modern themes such as cellphones, laptops and text messaging are indefinetely tied together. However, there are numerous problems to this such as the main and supporting characters longevity, and seemingly eternal youth.

I think that it's a fairly open discussion, and I would love to exchange thoughts and ideas on how to deal with all "present day-inspired sci-fi settings" such as today's superhero comic books.

Possible solutions:

- Alternate universes, specifically made to separate characters that does not significantly age throughout such as:

- New, fully fictional continuity with no ties to the real world whatsoever

World of Warcraft

Frequently employed by modern day DC and Marvel Comics, this is the most common way out. However, it is not very original nowadays.

My way of establishing a timeline in my fictional universe...

My idea is, to let the story start off in real-time (set in-universe between September/October 2008 and September/October 2009, but you can hardly distinguish it) and later move onto a "slower moving timeline", which if my plans go through still would see the characters age gradually over time.

Once a full year has been moved forward (in-universe) in the comic, I plan to set the exact time for the events, hopefully in larger collections with a stamp reading: "Virtus: Year One - 2008", and then move onto 2009-based stories. (Even if at the time, the real world might already be into 2020.. XD)

Such is my plan for String-V: Earth-1990 (The mainstream Virtusverse in the multiverse, and the setting for most of the comics)

Like it or not, that is my solution and main plan. But I would still love to discuss other possible gateways and ideas with you all, just because I find it interesting. ^_^

With the first part of the offical Virtus story, the origin of Virtus, going into print next month, I'm crossing my thumbs that it will be a success. Well, a minor personal conquest, but let me have this moment to shine, right? XD

Ahem, anyways...

CHARACTER CREATION AND MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON VIRTUS

When I first came up with Speedslide (the prototype of Virtus, and the source of my DA username) in 2006, the idea was simple and hardly original. A speedster.

Now, back then, I didn't have much thought on separating this particular speed demon from the rest. Flash, Impulse, Kid Flash, Sonic the Hedgehog... et cetera, et cetera.

It was not until late 2007 that I decided to break out from the whole speedster genre, and after a search for a name that would be original and easy to remember, which didn't necessarily have to be speedster related but a name that would, I had the choice of Virtue or Virtus. What made me decide on sticking with Virtus, was the fact that Marvel already had a minor character named Virtue, and original names has somewhat became a trademark for my characters.

Next step was to create a visual look. I wanted something that signified a young rookie hero, yet menacing to the evil he fights.

So basically, I broke down and threw away the ole Speedslide design and began from scratch. Then, since I made the character a youth, I decided: "Why not base him on myself? I'm a youth!"

But since most self-based characters are considered "Mary Sues" and "Mary Stues", I tried to still make it a modest character.

If he was going to be a teenager, he needed some acne. That way, I also added some realism to his civilian look. I also aimed for a sort of Spidey physique, but without the six-pack. That gave him a compact, yet sleek look, aerodynamic and fitting for a speedster.

Next, the masked alter ego. I had decided almost at first hand that I was going to go with the classic "capital letter trend" from Supes, even before I had decided on the finished name.

Now that I think of it, perhaps it was fate that had made me glue the V into the fundament of Virtus. After all, if you think of it, the V can mean many things... Vigilante, Valiant, Vigor, Velocity, Velox... Things that go well with Virtus' character. Thinking back on it, I think I managed through this twist of fate to combine the aspects of a speedster into a dark vigilante almost perfectly. Also the name has given rise to some interesting unintentional but simple nicknames that I'll use in-universe in the comics, such as V and Virt...

While there still are super-persons with the V-theme (Some version of Vigilante of DC, Marvel's Vox) in comics, I didn't feel intimidated. By then, I had the creativity to match.

Next up, the look. I took three prime colours. (Red, white and black) Since there already is a "Scarlet Speedster" around, I had to pick between white and black as main colour. I felt that white wouldn't blend well with the characters intimidating appearance in the full-body suit. So black it was. On that, I slapped the red V-marks a little on everywhere where it would look good. I tweaked the design a bit more to give him actual pants, not some painted on tights like other superheroes. And some other visual aspects, such as gloves, and sneakers that were added, I used the whites.

In a retroactive twist, I had accidentally created a visual look that would look good both in full colour and black-and-white.

Next up, an origin. Since I personally feel that making your character some sort of mutant is quite a lazy approach (No offense!), I tried something a bit more classic, which those that are nice enough to ask for a free digital copy of the origin story will realize.

Finally, a personality to match. I based him highly on myself, but I exaggerated some pieces, and you could say that the final result was a blend of Supes boy scout manners, Spidey's youth and shyness, and Batman's one-man vigilantism and dark demeanor. But I gave him a more mediocre intelligence at the scientific field, while he instead has a very wide knowledge of mythology. But his true downfall is his uncompromising and idealistic world view, which often puts him att odds with the international laws. He also lacks the cocky "I'm too fast for you" streak, almost sterotypical for the speedster genre.

If I do say so myself, Virtus may not be the most original teenage speedster around, but he is sure sticking out...

He wrote a poem about a lifestyle choice that I thought he spent alot of time critisizing for being different than his own and I believe I posted a comment as simple as "Gosh, what have you got against that, anyhow?" The man literally flipped out. He not only wrote two journal entries condemning me and calling me things between immature and evil, but he also sent me notes telling me how "disappointed" he was with me. A man that I don't know in real life, have only talked to online for a few days, is "disappointed with me." He blocked me, and I blocked him back.

Not long after I began to get several favorites and then a watch from the account !kyakuchuu. I noticed the similar style of poetry and similar interests but I hate people who make assumptions and I'd rather not be one of them, so I just figured it was another poet with similar interests. "Kyakuchuu" soon after began calling Kayla and I "muses" and writing poems about us as well. 2KL he called them-- and informed me that this meant "To Kayla and Ellie" There is a numerous list of them in his gallery. He favorited absolutely every work of mine with Kayla in it along side of me and also any of my pictures that showed my feet. (foot fetishist, obsessive personality: bad sign) He wrote me notes telling of his extensive admiration for Kayla and I, his plans for other poems about us, thanking me for being his "inspiration". All of this seemed very creepy, but I was always thinking, what if this is really just some eccentric old man minding his own business, and he just hasn't got anything better to do. I would hate to just hurt some innocent old man by lashing out at him for no reason. HOWEVER upon talking to Kayla about this, she has taken criminal justice classes. She said that many of these traits sounded like BAD traits and BAD signs. She told me about a type of serial killer called "collecters" Who will collect information, pictures, anything about their subjects, and obsess over them, for a long time before they make any move. She told me that alot of the time these men will be too smart for their own good and seem kind of innocent but mostly very mysterious. MILLENIUM LEGACY

If I can describe it in short, I would like to call it a "story with traditional heroes in an untraditional setting."

The first part of the story takes place in the US at the 1999/2000 transistion, a few years before Virtus appears for the first time.

The story centers around the last two still living members of the original founders of the superhero team American Silver Society, (Name changed to simply American Society because of the embarassing acronym), Marine Man and Golden Gauntlet, trying to track down the biological as well as spiritual descendants of their fallen comrades...

My birthday turned out real nice, a big cake (Thank heavens for teenage metabolism! X3) and lots of presents:

- A lightboard (So that's the secret to clean pencil lines! And I merely wished for it so I could do some traditional animation... Thanks for the tip, ! ^_^)

- A set of plates and other assortments which will come in handy when I move out. ^^

I won't be back until mid-July, but I hope to see a lot of birthday gifts when I get back... XD Just kidding about the gift part, but for those who know I'm serious about the birthday date, on July 11th I'll turn the big 18!

Also, it has now been confirmed that the first official Virtus story, written by yours truly will be out in newstands by September. Yes, that's right! Virtus is becoming official! Joy! Happiness! And all that happy crap... XD

I was also interviewed by a local newspaper that obviously needed to fill out their pages, and told them all I could without spoiling the story of Virtus and promoting SSS (Swedish Supercomics)

I urge you all to enter 's Swim Suit Jam, because it will be fun! Also, You all have to do something to pass the time until AFL II, right? XD

And don't ever forget 's "Create a villain for the Vigil-verse" Jam, which runs until the end of July, beacuse the ole Kost-M knows when he shouldn't compete with the biggest jam of all... Seriously, we must have set a DA record last time, with over 200 entries! ^^

Also, Me and Virtus will still return for the AFL this August. We ended up on 4th last time, and we won't hold anything back.. As long as it doesn't go against our moral code. ^_^

Well, this is an idea that I've had for a while now, which circles around the fact that at one point in the story I've planned for the future of the official comic of Virtus, he will at some point bring his heroics on a world tour, all the way from his native Scandinavia to the borders of the United States of America.

So I was thinking...

You all probably know that Virtus is highly based on myself (The whole Sebastian Sandberg - Seb Sanders connection probably tipped you off XD)

I did the exact same thing with Wireless, who's based on my dear friend , a great guy who always have been the best bud a guy can have.

But we all know, that he isn't my only friend. Well, he's the one I've known even before I joined DA, but that's irrelevant in this situation.

But you, my closest DA friends, have also been there for me, given me rich conversations and discussions, as well as encouraging my work, inspiring me, and some times, simply tolerated me as a minor nuisance. XD But none of you have ever, and never done anything to hurt me.

So, I want to thank you in the only way I can... By making character homages to you in the Virtus comic!

But it's not just because I love you all. This would also serve to breaking down all stereotypes associated with different countries in the world, because we all know, we are all alike in spirit. ^^

So, if you would like to be immortalized as a supporting character in the comic in a near-future, here's what you got to do:

1. First, I'm very truthful when it comes to characters based on real people. So I will need a photo reference and your full name (Which will be tweaked a bit to not have it misidentified with yourself) sent to me either by a note here, or at my e-mail sandberg.sebastian@telia.com

2. If you want to be a superhero (or a villain, but I'm sure none of you would use your powers for evil) I want you to pick a superpower that you would want more than any other power. One power only. (But there will of course be scientific side effects of these powers, which can be considered second power sets). Or if you just want to be a Batman-type character, or just plain casual, that's okay to.

3. The next step is creating a superheroic costume, which I will do, is to give me your favourite colours. It can be as many as ten or more colours if you want. I will then use my talent (or lack of talent, if you feel that's the truth XD) to make you a costume, but I will off course show sketches to you and let you decide if you like it or not.

4. A code name. I don't want to brag, but I think I'm quite original when I come up with new superhero names, such as Virtus, Wireless, Opacity etc. So let me pick out a few name suggestions, and we'll decide together what fits best.

5. There will be other matters, such as personality and family/friends, but let's leave that until the final stages, shall we?

My father doesn't love me. He has never, truly done so.

And don't give me some religious crap that says that you should show respect for your father, no matter what. I don't want to hear some Siegmund Freud crap either, about not understanding my father. This is not some honey-dipped Hollywood flick where the father and son gets along in the end. This is reality.

Because once you've gotten to know my dad from my point of view, you will probably agree with me, that that bastard doesn't deserve my respect.

My father is neither alcoholic, abusive or sexistic. Overall, he's a goody-two-shoes for any outsider.

I'm saying outsider, because it's only when there's someone else in the building (grandparents, friends, other) that he's any pleasant to be around.

But once you leave the house, the real Mikael Johansson shows his dirty face to his children and girl. (Yes, my parents never married. So sue me, and I'll pull your spine out through your throat.)

My dad complains about everything, from the way me and my brothers prepare sandwiches, to the way my mother have to work overtime as a teacher sometimes, to give those who have fallen behind a chance to catch up.

And you know what's the worst part about this? If something, such as realizing that the toilet paper has run out (while he's just brushing his teeth, mind you), he doesn't simply put a new roll on the holder.

No, instead, he forgets about it, and when we all have diner together, he goes on and on about how useless we are for not replacing the empty paper roll! And when I just can't take it, I scream at him that might as well do it himself, because he sure doesn't lift a finger when he can get someone else to do it. Furthermore, my screaming scares both our dog and my second-youngest kid brother to tears.

You have to agree, screaming is much better than punching his jaw in, right? I was very close in the daily brawl today. There you have the reason for my pacifist ways. If you can resist beating my dad to death, the you can resist beating anything.

My dad is a lazy asshole, who only works at his job at a local mart. Then, when he get home, he just sits around to tell everyone else how we should live our lives, how the proper way is to cook diner, don't take to much salt, etc.

In my family, there are two parents:

Mom = Good influence
Dad = Bad influence

Who does any work? (Both at home and at work)
My dad works at work, and sometimes cleans the floors. My mom works her ass off at work, and always cooks diner for us when she's home.

Who tries to raise their children?
Dad sometimes pay for toys, food etc.
Mom have always taught us right from wrong, how to behave and such.

Who's the best parent?
Definately mom.

My mom have lately been saying that the only reason that she is putting up with dad's idiocy and not separating, is because of me and my three brothers.

That's how great my mom is. No matter how tough a feat, she doesn't let go of it until she has bitten right though. I love her of all my heart.

But my dad... Let's just say, that if he doesn't apologize for being a terrible father figure, then there's no way I'm going to his funeral!

I'm currently in talks with Swedish fanzine "Svenska Superserier" (Swedish Super Comics, but it's just called that because we publish it in Sweden, so anyone is welcome, be it from USA, Great Britain, Germany etc. of any age, any gender, any race, any religion, is welcome!) to get Virtus published in a future issue. Now I have been asked to go on hunt for one, two or more artists to help me out.

As I said, the comic book is a fanzine, and as such it is published by amateurs, such as myself. There's no money in it, but I can promise you full credit for the illustrations.

It's a small step from an amateur to a professional that can take payment for his services.

So if you want to gain fame as an artist and my neverending gratitude, just comment, note or send an e-mail to sandberg.sebastian@telia.com for further discussion with such things as character designs.

A small tip, if you're more than one artist interested in taking part, the job will be split up so that each artist gets less pressure on him or her. For example, if you become two artists, you'll only have to do half of the pages each, and if you're four, a quarter... I think you get the point XD
