So I cleaned out my room today and I came across a bunch of stuff from middle school. Namely, a bunch of fanfiction and fanart written on widerule binder paper. For some people who've known me since I started getting active on dA once upon a time, it coincides with that particular spark of fandom (Wind Waker, anyone?). I sorta feel embarrassed, but hey, nothing wrong with having an active imagination, even if it did end up ultimately spewing crap.

I did find some neat original art, though, so I'm probably going to be remaking some of those pieces in a futile attempt to submit something of note.
So Rokujou took back her tablet as quickly as she lent it to me. Bye-bye, potential updatework ; ;

Anyway, here's some actual journal content for once: a eulogy of sorts. This'll mostly affect people within the Bay Area (aka you already know this was going to happen/already happened), but here's my eulogy anyway. For those who are queasy of poorly-structured text, it would do you best to stand back!

--

Today was a rather ordinary day. I attended my Sociology class,
then, deciding that I was in the mood for sweets, headed over to Nijiya Market for some milk tea and maple bread. I headed over to my next class - the ever-dreaded Algebra II - and, while taking in a lecture on cube roots and how to be eternally rid of them, I munched and sipped happily on the pair.

After the class (in which half of it was admittedly playing the excellent Mother 3/EarthBound 2 translation), I decided that more milk tea was in order, and visited Strawberry Park, which is this strip mall oriented toward the Japanese community in the Saratoga/Santa Clara area. I did indeed obtain my milk tea from the Mitsuwa Marketplace there, but I also made another purchase: a Japanese keyboard, from a little shop to the right of Mitsuwa, called User's Side (formerly Grow Up Japan).

User's Side billed themselves as a "PC pro shop" from Akihabara, but didn't limit themselves to just PC equipment - they stocked all kinds of import goods, the most notable being video games and video game accessories. Among these were some neat stuff, such as one-handed "RPG controllers", Hori arcade sticks (of which a number have been purchased by my group of friends), official PS2 Multitaps (are these even sold in America anymore?) and game posters (A poster I have from User's Side - a poster for the console release of beatmaniaIIDX 13: DistorteD - hovers above me tacked to the wall). My friends and I visited User's Side every time we passed by Strawberry Park for Kinokuniya runs, and someone out of our group always found something that would come in handy. Even if I passed by alone, User's Side never failed to charm me with their stock. And, most importantly, the prices on their goods were always reasonable and certainly better than what the online stores had to offer.

And now, User's Side had closed, indefinitely, after having given the public two weeks' notice and sale.

I stopped in front of User's Side to stare at it, for I would never be able to see it as it was again. At that time, an employee came out and announced that they were closed. I replied that I was just passing by one last time because they were going away.

After a moment of silence, the employee asked, "Did you want to take a look inside? We still have things that we haven't gotten rid of."

"Sure," I said, and he called to the attendant inside and told him that I would be browsing for a bit.

The lighting in the store was dim. Not much was left inside the shop. A handful of import video games sat on the side, their prices having been reduced to $14 as a last-ditch sales effort. Computer wires and software sat against the wall, a sign in Japanese proclaiming that they had been slashed by 60% to 80% - as an example, their copy of Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection had been cut from $1,100 to something around $200.

And then I spotted the keyboards. A stack of various keyboards had their prices slashed by 80%. I decided that I should at least pay them a final tribute before I would never see the store as it was again, and grabbed a Logitech (or, rather, Logicool - apparently someone beat them to the name "Logitech" in Japan) slimline keyboard. The register rang up the keyboard for eight-plus-tax.

As the attendant gave me the receipt, I inquired, "I'm curious: why are you guys closing down?"

The answer was a nonchalant "I don't even know, to be honest."

And so, I left the store carrying my supposed $40 keyboard and went home. The moment I came home, I plugged the keyboard into my laptop, played Mother 3 for a bit, and started typing this entry in full.

For sure, I will miss User's Side. There is a store in the same strip mall that does still sell import games, but are more focused on offering Japanese mobile phone services to the public, rather than selling all kinds of neat doodads that might catch my eye. They're also pushing their online store in lieu of a brick-and-mortar shoppe, but, for me, there's just something ine...

I purchased what I recommended - a 2oz thing of Silver Needle for $18.
I like taking notes in class, but it's going to be the death of me in Algebra II, where he goes over several thousand things before I realize "oh fuck why am I on Firefox". In fact, this post is being written while he's all like "SIMPLIFY, EVALUATE, AND SOLVE."

On the bright side, the lovely part of this semester is the fact that all of my teachers actually have some sort of personality, which is great. My Sociology teacher cursed (and apologized very, very briefly) at least six times in his opening speech; my 2D design professor made it very clear that she's "an eco-freak"; my Algebra II teacher was all like "okay, you know what, I'm doing this so that I can pursue my somewhat basic dream of good food and good beer". That's an honest man living the American dream right there, rofl.

I love college. The only things I don't like quite so much is the fact that I'm now out of milk tea (apparently he doesn't mind us drinking during class) and I need to go to my car to get some more, but apparently we're going to get a break during this and I have at least two more bottles on stock.

snare

That Caribou Coffee stuff is good at that. This has happened once before; I drank a pint of café au lait in Japan and it ended up having the same effect.

This has at least allowed me to finish Braid, which has the best final stage ever.

I figure I'll just wing my way through the day, as I did that first time when I foolishly had that café au lait. The only difference is that the Japanese café au lait was 110 yen - that's $1 for a quality drink right there, versus that $3 can. Why can't we have really nice prices like that over here? That'd be nice; to top it off, I wouldn't be as poor.

That, or three times as hyper.

snare

Crossposted from LiveJournal~.

Hellohello. It's been a while since I've updated this journal, but I figured I'd tell people I haven't already gotten in contact with (which numbers quite a few). So, a heads-up to people that see me on AIM and whatnot:

In about sixteen hours from the time of this post, I will be departing San Fran for Asia. The planned itinerary involves the Philippines for about ten days, and then I will be headed to Japan for five.

While in the Philippines, I'll be visiting relatives and will be relatively locked in my schedule, so to speak, doing stuff like visit the beach, visit malls (the two major ones in the Cebu area - SM Centre Cebu and Ayala Centre), get attacked by several hordes of mosquitoes in my sleep, etcetera. I'm sure visiting my relatives is going to be an interesting experience - I haven't seen them in about ten to twelve years.

Japan will be the fun part. I'll more or less be free the entire time while we're in Tokyo, which gives me enough time to play ridiculous amounts of Bemani while hooked up to e-AMUSE (and visit a landmark or two thousand, but I HAVE NO LIFE so the majority of it will probably be spent in arcades). I have a list of things to do prepared so that I won't regret not doing something later.

See you all in about two weeks! Hopefully, I'll have stories to share :3

snare

So Hidamari Sketch x365, the second season of yesteryear's awesome slice-of-life/comedy show, started airing today. A fansub was released; I grabbed it ASAP.

Four things to note about x365:

1. The opening is by Tatsh. For those who are unfamiliar with Tatsh, he was a Bemani artist turned anime composer - unsurprising since a number of his works sound quite 'anime'ish, e.g. Sphere, Zenius -I- Vanisher, and most infamously, Xepher; he also contributed a number of songs to Tenga Toppa Gurren-Lagann, which interestingly rebounded back into DDR and pop'n music.
2. There is about three times more animation in the first episode than perhaps the whole series combined. I'm not even joking, there's really fluid animation, and there's so much of it. I expect it to die down within the next few episodes.
3. The story follows the manga timeline. Gone are the days of the anime picking a random month and focusing on its hijinks, this thing is starting over from the beginning and adapts the original 4-koma content wonderfully.
4. Ending, once again, by marble. Marble's done the first Hidamari ending, and follows it up with an equally nostalgic sequel that sorta reminds me of Sousei no Aquarion.

Expect me to wax poetic about the series from time to time. :3 It's so good.

snare

Thus did I have a five-hour sleep this past night.

In addition, for the past few days, it's been so hot that I couldn't take my normal afternoon naps without sweating a ton.

The night before, I set up my fan in front of the window to blow cool air in. This worked to tremendous success; it was still cool when I came back from church service, and played a bit more TF2, then I went to attempt a nap.

An hour later, I wake up as my body temperature starts to rise. I get a bit irked, mount my fan on a chair, and point it directly at my face.

It worked wonders. I slept for most of the afternoon, regaining what I'd lost, having vanquished the menace that is the summer air.

And boy oh boy am I going to savor this victory. :3

snare

Because I can't think of any more content フロム・マイ・ライフ to put up on here, an addendum to the previous entry, with 250% more Nakaji and about 70% more fangirl pandering (once again, I blame *Rokujou, see the omake) than ever before! Enjoy~.

¤

The Ginga was an overnight express train, serving anyone who desired passage from the Kanto region to the Kansai area. It was a bit of an antique train - certainly a bit uglier than their daytime bullet-train counterparts, but it got the job done.
Standing in front of the train was a scrawny fellow, 5’7 in height, a blue scarf covering up his mouth - dusted lightly in stubble. A pair of thin rectangle glasses and a tuft of black hair were perched on top of his pointy nose; the rest of his hair was covered in a conductor’s hat. From the way one couldn’t see his face, one could assume him to be a shady character, but he - rather, Nakaji, for that was his name - hardly was a delinquent.
Facing Nakaji was a girl. She would be a normal girl dressed in burgundy - would be, but her features were blanked out, blurred as though she were a photo taken improperly. Some mixed red lip wavered in the girl’s censored figure, and a somewhat sweet, decidedly nasal voice emitted from it - “I wish you didn’t have to ---”
He woke up in a sweat. The girl’s words echoed in his mind, as he slowly came to consciousness. Where was he? - ah, right, he was in his apartment, dressed in a yukata, draped in a futon on the bumpy tatami floor. Turning his head a little more, he could barely make out the clock next to him - one-ten in the morning some humid summer Tuesday - the month and year were unimportant to his foggy mind.
As soon as he found out the where and when of his current existence, the words of the girl slipped past the cracks of his mind. This frustrated him to no end; he’d been having such dreams since a month ago. The same train, the same station, the same figure. The dream would end invariably whenever she would say something, and that fact - or a lack of, in this case - bit away at his sanity.
He tried to go back to sleep, but his mind, now active, now irked, wouldn’t let him. To combat this particular bout of insomnia, Nakaji decided that a bath - and a shave - would suffice.
He rose from the bed. Into the bathroom he went.

¤

Now stripped of his clothing and surrounded in water and steam, Nakaji once again pondered the dream. The small amount of concentration that it took for him to get a bath up and running had kicked the vision from his train of thought, and here he was, trying to grasp back at it like a falling man reaching for any sort of tether. He did not know why he did so, except that it felt important, and he did not know the particular reason for that feeling, either: the fact about the missing chain of dreams merely existed, with a basis unbeknownst to him.
After soaking in the water for some time, the dream finally started to repiece itself together, frozen in time - slowly: the worn-in train platform; the Ginga, with its doors open; the falling misty rain; the clouds, colored in assorted shades of gray, as though penciled in; his own body, draped in several layers of clothing; and then a figure in front of him. Blurred at first, the body came into focus: denim skirt, then a dark red top, sleeves striped with white. The head, topped with neatly parted black hair, did not have a face. The face was always missing - no matter how much he attempted to pull or at least reimagine the face from the depths of his (dream) memory, the face did not appear as a face. The least he got was nothing. The most he got was an animated blur.
As though some dream god had pressed a ‘ play’ button, the complete scene came to life, and the girl only muttered, “I wish you didn’t have to go.”
With those words, Nakaji suddenly woke up from his reverie, splattering a good amount of water around in the process. He muttered a curse, and lifted his body out of the bath. Taking a fresh towel in one hand, he slowly dried his skin, then twisted the towel over the tub before draping it over his lean shoulders.
He examined himself in the mirror; he was met with a blur. Wiping the fog from his glasses, he put them on and observed his body: pink skin adorned a pair of pink eyes – black pupils, with minute rivers of blood creeping out of the lens staining his normally blank sclera; his black hair, glistening wet from the bath he took moments prior, lay in a mess over his forehead; and just as his eyes darted toward the small hairs on his cleft, his glasses had completely fogged up again. He made no movement to combat this, as he took in several deep breaths of the mist around him.
The bathtub slowly drained itself. When it finished doing so, Nakaji decided that he’d leave the shave for another time...

It may be a bit embarassing to say this, but I've gotten back into writing fanfiction. A single piece.

I want to blame *Rokujou for this one, as it involves Nakaji; I was trying to argue the existence of the Nakaji and Sayuri pairing as legitimate, but she thinks Nakaji should be either alone, or with herself. We tried making a story for the hell of it on the way to dropping her off at a college for tests (she can't drive yet) and I actually tried expounding on it. And I liked it.

I then attempted to edit and rewrite it to the point where people unfamiliar with the pop'n fandom could still read it and still obtain enjoyment out of it; to the point where I can potentially change all of the names (removing every pre-existing notion of any character) and it would still hold its own.

I figured I'd give people a little teaser. Truth be told, it's not much - in fact, it only comprises half a page out of the seven or so I've already written and it doesn't even have much "pop'n" to it as I mentioned prior - but I figure I'd throw it out here.

To those of you who choose to read it, enjoy. To those who don't, I don't blame you.

-=-

Dear Jii-chan,

It’s been a year since we’ve graduated from Nishizawa music school, hasn’t it? How are you doing? I just got a paid internship with TV Tokyo - supposedly, I’m to help compose and provide music for their newscasts, learning from their current music producer Takeda-senpai. I’m actually very excited to start this job - even though it sounds a bit difficult, I’m sure it’ll work out fine in the end. They said that if I was diligent enough, I might even take her place as lead music producer!
So, what have you been up to, presently? I haven’t heard from you at all since that day you left on that train for Osaka. Hurry up and send a reply already - I want to know!

After some careful thought and consideration - what else could she say that could make more use of the stationery she’d purchased and dedicated to this particular person, as she did with all of her penpals? - she let loose a sigh and penned her name in the lower-right corner. After a couple seconds’ more time thinking, she sighed once more and added a heart before folding the letter up threefold and stuffing it in an envelope. On this envelope (which she had already put stamps onto), she wrote an address, and stood up from her chair to place it in the mailbox for pick-up later in the morning.
It was one o’clock in the morning of a rainy September day in the year of 1996.
This girl, draped in a flowery blue nightgown, opened the door to her second-floor room, slipped as quietly as she could downstairs (nevermind the creaks the stairs always made), and made for the door. She grabbed a light green umbrella on the way there - the kind of umbrella that looked like it was made from the same stuff as one of those tubes in a pool. Opening the door and unfurling the umbrella, she made her way to the mailbox and, opening it, inserted the orange-plaid envelope into it.
She skipped back to the door of her parents’ home with a smile on her face, and stealthily made her way back inside.

-=-

snare
