Guys, I need some advice on my bird, Gabriel.

I took him out last night and, to my horror, part of his right wing was caked with blood. He's apparently managed to pull out a blood feather somehow - possibly on a wire from one of the doodads what were stuck in his cage for him to play with.

I've cleaned the wing and found the shaft of the feather that was pulled out. It seems to have coagulated and, considering that there was only blood on his wing and faint traces on the wire in question, there wasn't much blood lost. It also apparently doesn't hurt him at all, because I was able to wipe the area clean and he's still able to fly without problems (as evidence by his grand escape when I was done cleaning).

So, my question: What's the best way to prevent infection or more bleeding? I'm planning to call a vet today or tomorrow, but until then I'm putting the question out here.

To begin, allow me to tell you how I came into possession of this monster of a literary work. An undetermined amount of years ago, the entire hardback set of L. Ron Hubbard's Mission Earth dekology was given to me by the father of a friend for a reason that he has never told me. I had mentioned that I enjoyed science fiction, and the man - with an expression that conveyed the purest of relief - was very quick to show me this dekology, shove it into my hands, and then wave me out the door. There was no damage to anything other than a bit of wear and tear on the cover of the first book, which tells me that he probably didn't even get that far. In fact, I'm thoroughly convinced that he just wanted to get rid of the things. Being 10 volumes of anywhere between 300 and 600 pages in length, I can't really blame him; these things take up quite a bit of room.

These books then spent a couple of years collecting dust in my closet until early spring of 2008, at which point I - desperate for something to take my mind off the final exams just beyond the horizon - decided that it was about time I put my impromptu gift to use.

I then proceeded to waste almost half a year trudging through this horrendously long series. This is roughly 6 months; 92 weeks; 180 days that I could have spent reading my numerous science fiction books that are infinitely better than this ten volume series.

I'm not saying that this series has no good points, gracious no! In fact, I'll begin this wall of text with the (few) positive aspects of the Mission Earth dekology. You see the first good thing as soon as you pick up the first book; the cover art! Yes, if you have the hardback editions of these books, you'll be treated by to a lovely piece of artwork by Garry Grace who, after this series, was apparently never heard of again. Seriously, try googling his name. You get nothing. Nothing. Another positive aspect is the fact that the plot, while long and full of sub-plots out the wazoo, is interesting enough to make you want to continue. In this sense - and only this sense - it is something of a page-turner. As well, some of the characters may pique your interest - in fact, I found that half the reason I was reading was to see more of certain characters and their interactions. Unfortunately, by the end of the series, most of these characters are either dead or simply never mentioned again. And this, my friends, is where we begin to explore - book by mind-numbing book - all of the things that make this series a cruel, mocking joke of a science fiction epic.

We begin with book number one, The Invaders Plan. This, believe it or not, is one of the better books of the series. It is better because, unlike the entire rest of the series, the first book seems to have a decent plot. It also gives us a nice introduction to some of the characters, including the two major ones. We first meet Soltan Gris; the sadistic, sneaky, yet ultimately cowardly narrator. We later come to Jettero Heller, who is one of two characters who are completely and undoubtedly perfect; the only other being his sister. There's a whole slew of characters in between, but these two are the ones that show up in every single book. While the story is incredibly slow (think frozen molassas on Pluto), it's a bit of a page-turner. The draw is a very good thing, because "incredibly slow" is something of an understatement. After over 500 pages of explaining Voltar, the Confederacy, and everything else under the sun, the ship for Earth doesn't take off until the very end. The very, very end. I mean, the book ends just as the ship is taking off. And guess what; almost the entire series moves at this pace! It's like a barrel of fun stuck in a horrible time warp! Oh, there's also the lovely little addition of (bleep)s. Yes, (bleep)s. Every "naughty" word is censored with a (bleep). Hubbard provides an explination of this in the form of a footnote, telling the reader that the robot that translated the book is required to censor all obsceneties. At first, I thought this was sort of clever in a vague sense. Then I read the rest of the volume. Then I read the nine others. It is no longer vaguely clever - oh no, now I flinch whenever I read anything pertaining to (bleep), parenthesis or not. It gets that annoying.

The second book, Black Genesis is where we begin to catch more glimpses of Hubbard's use of satire. Yes, Hubbard enjoys satire. I just returned from the Speed Racer movie~ It was awesome and fun and ~vysearcadia will back me up when I say that I was veryvery enthusiastic. Since I'm still hopped up on excitement, I figure I might as well work it off by typing a long and drawn-out analysis of the movie. How fun!

~*~*SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT*~*~

The first thing I need to say about this movie is that it was definitely made for people who have seen the series. If you haven't seen at least a few episodes of the series, you are more than likely going to be utterly lost due to the distinct lack of setup at the beginning and constant switching between real-time and flashbacks. People who haven't seen the series are also going to find the special effects and overall designs to be utterly stupid, but I will touch on that later.

And now, portrayal and changes made to the characters.

Speed Racer - I thought Speed looked really good and was played very well. Some of the faces he made during the action scenes were sort of iffy, but this is Speed Racer.

Trixie - Like Speed, I believe that Trixie was done pretty well. Looks personality, and all of that good stuff.

Spritle Racer - Spritle. Was so. PERFECT. Major, major props to Paulie Litt for really capturing Spritle's personality.

Chim-Chim - He is a monkey.

Sparky - Sparky was pretty so-so. His personality is a bit on the grungy side, as is his redesign. He also has an odd British accent and this boggles me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that he is absolutely useless in the movie, as it means the producers got this aspect of his personality down to a T. I like Sparky, but even I have to admit that his role was pretty minor in the show. Outside of fixing things, of course.

Max (Pops) Racer - Well, I think his name is Max. Anyway, Pops is played by a large, intimidating man who is very large and very intimidating. I was very pleased by this, and by the fact that his personality was kept mainly intact. His temper was a bit shorter in the series, but outside of that it was a very good representation.

Mom Racer - ...Not. Actually much to say her. She does actually play a role in the film that I really enjoyed, in stark contrast to the series. Because seriously, her and Sparky are just sort of there to take up space. Also, she still doesn't have a name.

Rex Racer/Racer X - See Speed and Trixie. They did put a little trick in for Racer X in order to throw the audience off, and I thought that was sort of nifty in a "oh wow I'm dumb" way.

Snake Oiler - THAT'S RIGHT, GUYS. THEY HAVE FUCKING SNAKE OILER IN THIS MOVIE. HOLY SHIT.

Aaand that's it for the main cast (and Snake). On to the special effects, which is where I am assured that the movie will lose those who are not fans of the original series. The action effects are pretty cheesy. The scene transitions are VERY cheesy. The good thing about this, however, is that they emulate the goofy and over-dramatic action of the original series very well. Also, explosions EVERYWHERE. Fans of the series are likely to appreciate this, and even see it as a fun poke at the original series. People who are not fans, however, are likely to see it as absolutely ridiculous and horribly-done.

The designs also mimic the original series in the vivid colours. Oh, there are so many vivid colours, in the clothes and backgrounds and et cetera. You will see this as soon as Speed takes a step outside, I guarantee it. The colours get dulled down during the time-skips forward, but it's still pretty vivid.

The action and racing scenes were surprisingly intense, and I found myself on the metaphorical edge of my seat many times throughout the film. The only thing that really squicked me was what seemed to be the cars' lack of friction, as they just keep SLIDING EVERYWHERE.

Content-wise, there's a mix of both light-hearted and more adult humor in the film. The slight mix of adult humor surprised me, but not necessarily in a negative way. It was just a shock to hear ass a couple of times, hell a few times, and shit once near the end. Spritle also flipped someone the finger, but I was laughing so hard at it that I didn't quite care.

Overall, I'd suggest the movie to people who are honestly fans of the original Speed Racer series. Everyone else, I really wouldn't recommend it for the fact that it's hard to really appreciate the movie without having some knowledge of the series beforehand, and even "meh" sort of fans may not really enjoy the movie as much.

Okay, so the first one was relatively short. I don't remember too much about it, but it DID involve a comic. A lot of the splash pages and some of the frames had some really gruesome illustrations. I can only remember the faces, but...ever read anything by Junji Ito? Yeah, multiply that by 5 or 10 and you've got what was in there. Anyway, in the dream some kid goes underneath his school for some retarded reason that I have yet to find out. Aforementioned school seems to have its very own system of catacombs, because this is exactly what the area the kid is in looks like. Except there were pipes everywhere. Anyway, if I remember correctly, he ends up encountering someone down there, who then morphs into one of those faces and a gigantic pair of hands and starts chasing the kid. I believe that's where the dream ended - either that or I can't remember anything after that.

It was just before I woke up that I realized that the faces I saw were exactly the level of horror and detail that I strive for whenever I draw anything related to this type of media. I'm not sure if it made things more comforting or more creepy.

Either way, the second dream is the one that freaked me out. I was in this large line of people waiting to get into my father's school (he's an English teacher) for one reason or another. The bell rings and everyone starts to file inside, but there's some guy standing outside the door. Everyone just stands there and stares at him until one of the students takes a few steps forward. At this point, some weird green gas starts pouring out of a vent in his costume (which is bright green and red and makes him look like a rejected Batman villain). As soon as the gas touches the kid, he starts turning into a fucking tree.

Naturally, everyone freaks.

Now, people who know me well enough also know that I have a thing for transformation. It's an interesting concept, and can be totally badass at points (see Bloody Roar arcade fighter. Fuck. Yes.). There are, however, two things that need to be said in this situation.
1) I do not enjoy self-TF. As totally ~*~rad~*~ as turning into a giant snarling...I don't know, werepangolin is, I would not like to do that. Thanks much, bro; I'll stay human.
2) I cannot CANNOT CANNOT get into inanimate TF. It creeps me out. A lot. It's like...that fucking sucks, okay? You go through this omg!transformation and then you sit there as a tree. or a toy. Or whateverthefuck. No. It's just unsettling. I'll stick with huge rabid wereshit, thnx.

So, again naturally, I fucking ran. Fast. While everyone else was running, Sir Dendrophilia was turning as many people into (fucking) trees as possible. He apparently didn't stop there, as ofter the next few days he went on a tree-happy rampage and caused ~*~*~*~MASS PANDAEMONIUM~*~*~*~. At this point I had been hiding out in some abandoned house, and the dream's subject shifted from me to the guy and the point of view changed from first-person to third-person.

So, after the view switched, we see Mr. Bonerforwood talking with some punk. Said punk has apparently promised him some information in return for not being turned into a (fucking) tree. Mr. Pinescent apparently doesn't get his information, because guess who interrupted the conversation? Francoise/Cyborg-fucking-003.

What the merciful flaming shit.

So Morningwood Man is shocked and decides to turn the punk into a (fucking) tree for some obscure reason - probably thought he called the animu cyborg feds on him. Apparently 003 got over her "OMG plees no more violence sobsob" phase, because now she starts kung-fu fighting with The Treehugger. He attempts to use his nasty fucking gas on her, but apparently that doesn't work on cyborgs because not all of their parts are organic or whatever the blood-puking hell my mind made up as an explanation. Anyhow, she somehow gets away and retreats to his evil underground sewer lair. My grandfather and my father use(d) it for screennames/logins in general. When I was first using the internet, I saw that my father had it as his AOL screenname. When I started out on Neopets, I had no idea what to use as a name. Thus, I just went with that. It stuck; and I'm personally glad for it. If I hadn't done that, my animu-obsessed younger self probably would have chosen Kawaiinekodesuwai-chan112.

I like to use a lot of dark and neutral colours when I'm painting, but I'll generally use what the piece calls for. I tend to be hesitant about using bright colours, however.

I tend to spend a lot of time on facial expressions. If the face is obscured, I focus on body language instead.

My bird just flew away.
Well, less 'away' and more 'he's high up in a tree outside my house and there's no way in limbo we're getting him back'.
We've got his cage outside in case his homing instincts kick in, but I don't know if he wants to come back.
I'm sorry if this is overly angsty, but it's just...

I failed.

I failed myself. I failed owning a pet. I failed my family. And I failed Gabriel. It's my fault he got out. I should've clipped his wings, but I didn't because I was an idiot.
And now I can't fix it. That it. Poof. This was the one mistake that ended it.

The only thing I can do now is pray. Pray to God, pray to Saint Anthony, just hope that he'll come back.

I don't want to lose him. :(

EDITEDITEDIT: Mom got him back! She actually got him back! I can't believe it! The chances are...are...
I don't know how to thank her! Heck, I CAN'T thank her ENOUGH! Oh, I'm so happy for have Gabe back!

My Dad actually OK'd me going to Otakon next year.
YES PLEEEEASE.
And I want to cosplay, though the only people I can think of who I could possibly pull off are Chouji and CS2 Jiroubou. Chouji's only a possiblility if I go as time-skip (I am NOT spiking my hair to get it like pre-skip Chouji's. CS2 Jiroubou's a possibility because I can just dye my hair orange.) , and I'm too short for Jiroubou. HELP GUYS I HAVE NO IDEA FGSFDS

Anyone who's been to Otakon, you mind telling me how much registration is? I'm close enough to drive to Baltimore, so I don't have to worry about hotels, but parking and registration I need some info on. Seeing as how this year's Otakon just ended, I can't get it from the website. =(
