'Magic,' Bruce Springsteen's new studio recording and his first with the E Street Band in five years, is set for release by Columbia Records on October 2, 2007. Produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, the album features eleven new Springsteen songs and was recorded at Southern Tracks Recording Studio in Atlanta, GA.

Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live in Dublin will be available on-line and in stores on June 5. The release will consist of: a concert DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and separate two-CD set. The songs and videos are drawn from the band's performances in Dublin, Ireland at The Point in November of 2006.

Songs include fan favorites from 'The Seeger Sessions,' radical interpretations from the Springsteen songbook and rare songs appearing for the first time on any Springsteen release.

First aired on VH1 April 23, the stunning solo performance is nearly two hours long and features a total of 8 complete Springsteen songs including "Devils & Dust" and "Jesus Was an Only Son" from his recent acclaimed album 'Devils & Dust.' 'VH1 Storytellers' also contains Springsteen's detailed comments, introductions and anecdotes on the songs' origins, as well as a previously unseen question and answer session between the musician and his fans.

More than a year after its release Bruce won a Grammy for "Code of Silence" in the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance category. The song appears on the bonus disc of the Essential Bruce Springsteen and is a rather obscure choice. It was co-written with Joe Grushecky and first performed live by Bruce in 2000 during the Reunion Tour where the version on Essential was culled from. Bruce wasn't present at the Grammy Awards show and the award was handed out before the live broadcast.

Could this be the new album?

A tracklist of the alleged upcoming album has surfaced on message boards. This is not unusual when a new album is rumored, but usually they are made by wise-asses who want to see how many people they can fool. But this one differs from the pattern in that none other than Backstreets.com mentions some of the same song titles in their new album alert story, and Backstreets usually doesn't publish anything that they haven't verified. The song list looks as follows:

The album's title will be Devils and Dust and the whole thing will allegedly be released on April 26. According to someone who claims to have heard some of the tracks it wil be very countryish with banjo and steel guitar on at least some of the songs. The first four of the titles have appeared before. "Devils and Dust" was rehearsed in soundcheck on the Reunion Tour and before the Vote For Change Tour, "All the Way Home" is the same song, but in a different arrangement, as the one Bruce gave to Southside Johnny in 1991 and that they have performed live together on a few occassions, "Long Time Coming" was performed live several times during the solo acoustic tour in 1996-97 where it was a fan favorite, and "The Hitter" was performed live once on the same tour. The E Street Band involvement is there, but don't expect a full-E Street Band effort.

Video Tracks in the cards?
Is Bruce planning to release a career retrospective multi-DVD set? Rumors are swirling on the message boards [at [link]] after an employee at a multimedia firm allegedly told a friend they are working on a Springsteen project. The project will supposedly include footage of Bruce and the band from way back to the early Seventies as well as newer stuff from Fenway in 2003. Only time will tell if there's any truth to this and how ambitious it is going to be.



2005-01-15:

Nebraska songs turned into literature

In 1991 Sean Penn turned "Highway Patrolman" into a movie called The Indian Runner. Now the whole Nebraska album will be turned into a book of short stories. The book is called Deliver Me From Nowhere and will be published on Soft Skull Press in March. It's written by young author Tennessee Jones, who was only three years old when the album was released. It simply consists of ten short stories that are not only recycling the titles of the ten songs on Nebraska, the short stories themselves are prose versions of the songs, retelling the stories and expanding the universe of characters such as Ralph from "Johnny 99" and Wanda from "Open All Night". And perhaps surprisingly to some, it's not bad at all. It's entertaining and deeply interesting to read these tales in this format. But rather than trusting us, check out Soft Skull Press' website where you can read an excerpt from one of the stories.

New album in the spring - tour to follow

According to a usually reliable source Bruce has finished recording a new album. If true, the release date is expected to be in March or April. The album is described as The Ghost of Tom Joad'ish, but with more instrumentation. The E Street Band has been involved in the recordings, but mostlly individually. A tour lasting at least 18 months is being planned. In a unique move, the tour is expected to start out low-key with only Bruce and a couple of the E Street Band members, but as it progresses more and more E Streeters will join the lineup and add their touch to the new music. As the source says, "The focus of the tour will be to emphasize Bruce as a solo performer and how his music and message are enhanced by the E Street Band". The tour will start out in small venues, but as the band joins in, larger venues willl be used. The smaller shows will mostly be in the US, with perhaps a few in Europe, but a full world tour is expected along the way. Take this information for what it is: unofficial and unconfirmed, but from a source that has been right before. And even if this is what the plan looks like now, it could be subject to change."
