My original art has been copied by a manufacturer who is now suing me in federal court to overturn my existing copyrights and continue making knockoffs. I have a strong case, a great lawyer and believe that if I can continue to defend myself, the case will be resolved in my favor. If I run out of funds before we reach trial, a default judgment would be issued against me and could put me out of business. I don't believe my opponent can win this case in court and I don't believe he really intends to try.
I've been getting pretty regular favs and watches. Thanks, people!

Sorry for not answering everyone personally, I've been terribly busy. Being sick, travelling, working, now we're moving... Typical stuff, though, not much special enough to talk about.

Been working on the New Mutants series, volume 3, Mighty Avengers, Dark Reign Fantastic Four, stuff. All for this bloke:

Also, for Jay Fotos, now that Locke & Key is taking a break, we've started on something else to keep us busy until Joe's ready for more L&K. I don't know what's been publicly announced so far, but it's drawn by this insane guy: The artwork is something else. Gabe really loves to challenge himself in new ways with each project. It comes across so different from his L&K work.

Also for Jay, more Frazetta [link] books. Covers for three more Dark Kingdom books have been done, interiors for one have been started. Sorcerer is coming along. I guess IDW is republishing an old ten-page story written by Joe Hill some time ago, "Freddy Wertham Goes to Hell," which you can read a bit about here: [link] Just finished with that.

I still love my job. Wish I could colour more, but it's so awkward on this laptop. I'll have a proper Core i7 desktop built soon, though.

Figured I'd say a bit more about what makes me human.

Some of you may notice the name beneath my nickname, "Eagle." It's my real name, on my birth certicifate and everything. It's a Native American name, though I am not Native.

Long story short, I didn't give it to myself and neither did my parents. I was -born- with it.

I have hardly ever told anyone -why- it's my name. It's a story I hold close to my heart. It speaks to my spiritual beliefs, which can't now be called by any name. Not Native, not Christian, not Bhuddist, not anything I have seen a name for. I am spiritual, but I don't use it as an excuse to do or be anything. I just do what I feel is right and live largely guilt-free, unburdened by what others want me to be.

I have been with a woman for getting on ten years now. She was raised all over Asia as her father was a Christian missionary for most of her childhood. She had many unconventional experiences there, some of which her father corroborated for me before he passed away. I have no reason to doubt her veracity.

One such encounter involved a creature called a "Penanggalan": [link]

I have found no names for her other experiences.

So when a story like this comes up [Burglar: I was held captive by ghost for 3 days [link] I think there's a pretty good chance it's true.

Have you had any unconventional encounters?

I spend all my working hours on this very computer, in Photoshop. So, for fun, I have a bad habit of looking elsewhere.

What do I do for work? Well, I'm certainly not a comic colourist! Nooooooooooooooooooooo.

I'm just a lowly flatter.

Fortunately for me, though, I work for ridiculously fun people.

Some books you won't ever see me credited on include almost all the current Frank Frazetta comics, some of Marvel Zombies Vol 2, Black Summer since issue 4, a French book called "Planche" that isn't out yet, the Beowulf comic adaptation of the movie and Locke & Key, written by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son.

Big, big news about Locke & Key, too: Dimension just bought the rights to make a movie! Much, much joy. I wanna visit the set and see the house, even if it's just a miniature like Spiderwick.

Who do I work for? The colourists, not the companies. 'Swhy I can't hope to get credit.

I've had my work published by Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, Avatar and a French publisher whose name I've never known, but you'll never see a pixel of it, except in Locke & Key where some of my colour choices are making it to the final printed page because my boss is just that awesome.

Now, get the hell out of here and go look at what got done with some of my work: [link]

How the hell my pathetic flat colours [I didn't actually do the first page; he did that one himself] got turned into such magic is beyond me.
See Scott Kurtz' blog post [link] about Ringo if you haven't yet. And if you have no idea who Ringo was, browse his gallery: *Wieringo.

As nice as Mike was and as many friends as he had, he still lived with the regret of being unable to tell his own stories--even I could see it in his sketches. There were worlds he still wanted to explore. But to "pay the bills," he was stuck working on other people's stuff. Granted, there is probably some element of choice there: He could have maybe pushed harder, or talked to someone different, reached out to people who would have been more supportive and willing to pay him for his stories.

So if we take anything away from his passing--besides all the great memories of a great man, which I will always regret not having the chance to have--maybe it's that there should be more room in the industry to do what we want. Even if it's just from time, to time, the big companies certainly make enough money from their flagship titles to give their artists a chance to stretch and do something they really want to do without the fear of being unable to pay the bills some months or meet some draconian deadline on a big series that they should feel priviledged to work on because it's one of the company's biggest or whatever.

Joe Q, as far as I can tell, has already taken some steps in what I see as being the right direction by getting artists' input on what series they'd most like to work on. I don't know about anybody else, but it seems like a start, right?

Fans love the guys making the comics [well, depending who it is...]. It couldn't possibly be a bad thing to let the fans get closer to their favourite creators by letting them touch something of their own. There could even be a monthly anthology book where the big guys let their artists take a break from their regular stuff to do a little story all their own, with support staff to do whatever they can't on their own--colouring, lettering, whatever--so it doesn't look like crap [give it a real fighting chance to mean something, in other words] and let whatever goes into that anthology stay the property of the guy who came up with it. I know that's a taboo, but Jesus, Image isn't just a flash in the pan. And then, depending on fan response, some of these small stories could be given miniseries or even something longer.

Then there wouldn't be that regret. At least they'd give it a chance and wouldn't have to worry about getting paid by a small-time publisher who doesn't have the marketing budget to really get the books in people's hands.

And if there isn't someone with an idea he can do right away, then just don't publish the anthology that month. Since it's just a little piece of a story, it doesn't have to take long to make, then they can get back to their regular series, or whatever. They should be given the support of pro writers to get input on pacing or other details if they're uncomfortable writing it on their own; you know, not left out in the rain to sink or swim completely on their own.

There are so many great stories that could be told.

Leinil Yu's Silent Dragon kicked ass so hard.

There should be pride in the artists too, but not just by showcasing what they can do for the company's main titles.

I've been enormously irritated with Photoshop for about a month now. It kept jamming or flickering like crazy. I'd never had this problem before, so I thought it was caused by my finally upgrading to PS CS2.

Reformatting, reinstalling everything, downgrading to PS 6.0 didn't help.

Turns out the problem was the drivers for my Microsoft Trackball Optical mouse, the likes of which I've been using for a good six years. Replacing it's going to be a pain in the ass, but I'm getting a Logitech G5, so it won't be too much pain. Uses the same drivers as my keyboard, so that works out nicely.

The stupid thing is that people were having this problem as far back as IntelliPoint 5.5. But I only got it after a recent clean reformat and reinstall of everything, with IntelliPoint 6.1.

So what the hell?

Thought it was about time I posted an update for anyone who may or may not care.

I haven't been posting anything new, really. The reason is I got a job as a flatter for a most awesome guy.

Given my history of adoration for Frazetta, my helping on the Death Dealer comics is just pretty much keeping me floored.

'Course, I'm just a flatter, so you won't find my name in the credits, but I still get to see the pages long before all o' y'awll. Neener-neener. Hahahaha.

'Course I'm also not just working on that series or I'd be pretty screwed, so my time in Photoshop these days is consumed with work. The program's not as fun anymore, so I haven't spent much time on my own stuff. What I have done got screwed by my importing the inks I did in Manga Studio to Photoshop so I could colour them. The color management on the file is now fucked, so what I see in Windows when I save as a JPG is completely different from what I see in Photoshop. I've got some ideas how to fix it, but I've got some pages to do right now.

I took to Photoshop years ago and really easily because the logic on the surface functioning of the software made sense to me. But now that I gotta do this stuff professionally, the whole colour management thing is a whole huge new universe in the code that seems to make very little sense to me. Thank God Dave McCaig so generously set up a home for comic colourists full of absolutely rockin' people to help us pathetic n00bers. I'd post a direct link, but I don't know if that's totally couth, so if you're really serious about wanting to find the place, just find his personal blog.
The answer to the trivia question my last journal entry, which apparently nobody cared about, is--according to my own interpretation of the text--man's holy anal sphincter.

What a holiday season... It was really amazing for me. Family, friends... Total quality time. None for dA, though.

So I ain't been here. It's slowing down now, so I'll be on more again. Got stuff to finish up.

Got an Xbox360 from my bloody uncle. Just brilliant.

*Kweli's asking for some help for so please take a look. 'Tis the season... I can't even get any 360 games for myself, so I'm stuck with PGR3 for now. Soon as I can, though... Soon as I can.

Kids don't need insurance companies telling them what problems they can or can't have taken care of. Shouldn't even be a damned option to refuse children medical treatment they need in order to survive. What the hell are they thinking?

I know they weren't for many, but I hope many more had holidays as wonderful as mine were.

Screw whatever you call yours. We're all human. We all bleed red. Why aren't these holiday well-wishes in our hearts year-round? Why do we have to bottle up all our generosity, love, hope and child-like wonder for one or two days out of the year? That's a wasted ratio.

Love your friends, family and neighbours every day of the year, or what right do you have to demand anything of me? I don't want to feed your hate and fear. I don't want the children to pay the price for our useless baggage.

So you didn't get hugged. What's to keep you from hugging them?

No excuses. No lies. Stop fearing, stop hating. Start living for all of us.

With each of us living only for ourselves, look where we are. A man can't even provide for his children. Now imagine if we were all working together. We wouldn't need a space program to distract us from our garbage on the ground. Maybe we'd pick it up and deal with it instead.

Ignore Paris Hilton. Pay attention to the real people around you.

There's no reason for Christmas to be only one day. And I'm not talking about presents.

Good stuff,

Maybe Illustrator would be better for this style of image, though, so maybe I need to look into that...

*EDIT*

Failure. Ended up not happy with what I was doing, so did some rough sketching to loosen up instead.

I've been aware of and browsing devART for some years now, but only just decided to get an account. So here I am. Not much to look at, I know, but I'm still learning, so please try to not be too brutal.

Starting off this new adventure on dA, I thought I'd first put up some drawings, since that's where I started. Unfortunately, I haven't drawn in several years, so these are quite old and not exactly post-scan cleaned. I'm not posting them in chronological order, though. More recent digital stuff to come.

I've always found dA's variety of talented artists inspiring. And now, in this period of transition for my life, I hope to learn from you all.

So I'll be seeing you all around.

ID logo and such to come as I figure all this schtuff out.
