Hello, All!

Well, life has certainly been a roller coaster lately. I'm drowning in my research paper, I've been to two concerts (The Koffin Kats and the Phenomenauts), saw "The Rat Pack is Back" two nights in a row, did the corn maze, picked pumpkins, had one mid-term, wrote an essay on Lewis & Clark, and tomorrow Patrick and I heading Portland, spending the day in Portland, seeing Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, then heading back the same night, throwing a Halloween bash, having breakfast the next day with my Aunt and Uncle who are visiting from California, and I have to write a 5 page paper about the American west, followed by a mid-term on the same topic on Monday. *huff*

So...yup. Just checkin' in with all you fine folks! BBVD will be amazing - I saw them in LA on New Years Eve a couple years back, they put on a good show. I hope to get some awesome photos too.

I hope you all have a lovely and safe Halloween!
-Janey

Last week brought the first week of classes. I'm officially in my final year at college. This term brings my history seminar, where we write our 25 page research paper. Think of it as an undergrad thesis. My topic: Vice in Portland during the 1940s and 50s. The essay should be based mostly on primary documents, and this is causing me to spend a lot of time in the Special Collections of the library. All of the documents and books in SC cannot be removed from the library, which means I either have to remain in there, or spend 25 cents a page for them to photocopy items. This is also on top of other papers and other readings for other classes. *sigh*

So, what this gets down to...please pardon the possibilities of being MIA.

Thanks for all of the recent comments and s!
-Janey

The theme for my seminar is Oregon history, and I am leaning toward the idea of writing it about prostitution in Oregon. I have located a museum and archive in Astoria with information, as well as Pendleton which even has a tour of a brothel. But does anyone know of any others in Oregon?

Thanks!

P.S. Mysterious red dot keeps appearing in photos from the D90 - camera in for inspection.

GOOD NEWS! My boyfriend, and main photographer purchased a new camera, a Nikon D90! So, pin-ups will be back in full swing here shortly! As for the old D50, I'll be purchasing it as well as paying for its repair. But I'll at least have my very own awesome digital camera. Before meeting my boyfriend, I shot purely film with an old 1970s Minolta. I was basically dragged kicking and screaming into digital. But after one day at the racetrack with the D50, I was in love.

That's about it. Survived the heat wave from last week, in the process of refinishing a desk I bought off Craig's List, final week of summer term classes next week! There's a lot going on!

Thanks for the love and support!
-Janey

My main photographer, my boyfriend, dropped his camera (which I also use) and it looks like he broke the shutter. He dropped it off at the local camera shop, and they're checking it out. Keep your fingers crossed!

On another note, we're off to the roller derby tonight! Very excited. I'm taking my little Nikon Cool-Pix, but I doubt it will produce the amazing pictures of the Nikon D50.

Thanks again for the lovely comments and favorites!
-Janey

I'm currently enrolled in an Art History course titled: The History of Design. Due on 1 June is a paper on an artist, movement, or design firm. If the topic you wish to write on was not discussed in class, you had to get it approved by the professor. I thought it would be interesting to talk about the pin-up, especially during WWII as morale. The professor extended it to discuss the pin-up in advertising, calender art, etc., which is what I'm running with. I can't believe this - I get to write a paper on the pin-up - for school credit! It's unreal! The upside is I don't have to go to the library (I am rather frightened of our university's library) and I can pull from my personal collection of pin-ups as well.

In photography news, I currently started shooting a series, inspired by my piece "The House Wife". I've slacked off on reading for the past two weeks, and it has caught up with me. Meanwhile, I've also let my apartment go to hell in a handbasket, leaving this weekend a weekend of reading and cleaning.

The motor in my beloved car recently died, and next weekend I am blessed to be getting a new one. Though it will cost more than my car originally did, but I guess that's the cost of having an old car. I recently purchased a Heywood Wakefield dresser off of Cragislist for $100, though it is in desperate need of refinishing, as well as having a new handle made put on it. So that is also on my plate. Mother's Day is around the corner, as well as the boyfriend's 21st, and that of a close friends. Additionally, a friend and former classmate of mine from high school died in a motorcycle accident, and the memorial is next weekend. It's in Portland, and I not sure if I'll make it up there or not, but it is an extra thing to think about.

I do intend to have a few pin-ups up soon since I did have them shot awhile ago. I do hope though however that you have enjoyed my Spirit Converse I created. And I look forward to posting new pin-ups soon.

-Janey

Personally I see little importance or good in it, but I do enjoy the swanky flair of cocktails, and I plan on making my first alcoholic beverage of choice being a martini (shaken, not stirred). I'm also popping by Trader Joe's to purchase some Champagne. As for partying...tonight my mother is coming to visit and I'll do dinner with the family, then Friday night some friends and I are hitting the bowling alley in prom attire, followed by drinks and cake back at my place.

As for birthday pin-ups as a possibility, I would enjoy it, but since it's mid-terms these next few weeks, I'm unsure as to it working out.
Hello, dear readers, watchers and admirers!

Now, today started out so wonderful, the sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. A few friends and I enjoyed a day of thrift store hunting and I came home with an armful of goodies. Then I logged on to DA...I had one note in my inbox. It was to tell me that my latest deviation "Buy Those Bonds" had been moved from the "pin-up" category to "miscellaneous". Now, I understand that this piece isn't simply that of me in vintage army attire, but I noticed that several deviants who I admire had placed similar deviations in the "pin-up" category without removal. Here are some examples:
[link]
[link]
[link]
So, I figured that I would be safe. HA! I try really had to put deviations where I think they should belong, but it seems that I am continually punished while others go unnoticed who certainly do not belong there. So, today I spent about ten or so minutes flipping through the "pin-up" category and reporting on images of girls taking random photos of themselves with their built in MacBook cameras (I will note I am guilty of that, but I don't post them) and they weren't even in vintage attire. I also found a photo of a guy kissing his dog (in contemporary clothing), closeups of girls' butts, photos of celebrity photos (if you can believe that), as well as a picture of a tree, yes, a tree. How is it that these images go under the detection of admins, while my deviation, which the main subject matter is in the pin-up style, with vintage clothing, etc., but with a little embellishment and also in the same vein as other works, gets pulled?

All I can say I am livid, and on the verge of leaving because I can't stand the ineptness of the admins here.

-Janey

He got so nervous prior that, in figiting with his buttons on his suit that he popped a button off. There are quite a few humorous pictures of the situation.

As always, thank you for all of wonderful comments and s!

Love,
Janey

Hello All,

Well, I have survived yet another winter term. As for grades, god knows how good they'll turn out...I finished up finals yesterday, and have spent the past two days shopping to celebrate. It will be nice to have a week without worrying about due dates and such. Next term includes a history class on the car, a physics class on light and color, history of design and my final term of Italian - thank god.

As for pin-ups, I have quite a few on my list, so there should be a few posted soon. There is a car show this Saturday, but indoor shows are the worst when it comes to photography due to the lighting and often reflects off of the cars. Additionally, my brother is (finally) getting married, a week from Saturday. I'm the lucky Maid of Honor, and it comes with its joys as well as its ills. My boyfriend and I are doing the photography for the wedding as well. It's my second wedding that I will have shot and thank god my brother isn't having his dogs in the ceremony - those are the worst.

Hope you are all well,
Janey

My boyfriend saw this on the ticker at the bottom of CNN, and then I found the AP article on-line:

Pinup Bettie Page hospitalized after heart attack

By JAMES BELTRAN, Associated Press Writer James Beltran, Associated Press Writer – Sat Dec 6, 1:52 am ET

LOS ANGELES – Bettie Page, a 1950s pinup known for her raven-haired bangs and saucy come-hither looks, was hospitalized in intensive care after suffering a heart attack, her agent said Friday.

"She's critically ill," Mark Roesler of CMG Worldwide told The Associated Press.

He said the 85-year-old had been hospitalized for the last three weeks with pneumonia and was about to be released when she had the heart attack Tuesday. Page was transferred to another hospital in Los Angeles and remained in intensive care Friday.

A family friend, Todd Mueller, said Page was in a coma. When asked to confirm, Roesler said, "I would not deny that," but he would not comment further on her condition.

Page, a secretary turned model, is credited with helping set the stage for the sexual revolution of the rebellious 1960s. She attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure that were tacked up on walls across the country.

Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses.

Page later spent decades away from the public eye, and during that time battled mental illness and became a born-again Christian.

After resurfacing in the 1990s, she occasionally granted interviews but refused to allow her picture to be taken.

Mueller credits his business dealings with Page for bringing her out of seclusion. He said he first met her in 1989 when he offered her "a bunch of money" to show up at autograph signings.

"I probably sold 3,000 of her autographs, usually for $200 to $300," he said. "Eleanor Roosevelt, we got $40-$50. ... Bettie Page outsells them all."

Fall didn't last very long here in Oregon. After a week of lovely sun and great fall colors, rain has suddenly taken over making the streets reflect the headlights of cars and pulls the leaves from the trees even faster. I feel like it's December. It's cozy when sitting in my apartment looking out, but the moment I step outside...it's a bluster. As do several stores. Michael's is toting Christmas decor like Christmas is only a week away, and Target has already subtly themed their latest circular to Christmas. I often have a strict policy about not allowing Christmas music or decor until the day after Thanksgiving, but that this rate, I'll have Christmas decor up within the next week. I'm trying to hold out until the 20th or so.

Mid-terms were last week and continue this week, with on tomorrow and one Thursday. Over the weekend I hosted a Halloween party, worked and went to the flea-market, which left little time to study. Not to mention Election Day is tomorrow, so get out there and vote!! Oregon has mail-in ballots, so I got my vote in early, and even made it on CNN thanks to their ireport program!

Ciao,
Janey

The other day, my friend and I went shopping and at the end of the day we walked out with both of our Halloween costumes. My friend is going to be a flapper, and I (while I know many won't get it) will be Dixie Cousins of one of my favorite shows, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. The boyfriend is currently thinking of being Brisco and we can do that coupley costume thing, I guess...anyhow, the wonderful thing about my costume (which requires a few personal touches) is that it can play a dual role - Halloween costume and pin-up outfit. For sometime now, I've wanted to do the can-can/saloon girl pin-up. So look for that eventually.

Sorry for the lack of pin-ups, I've been working (being a pin-up girl doesn't pay the bills) a lot lately, and antique show/fleamarket season has been officially kicked off, and I've been quite busy with that. But that's not the most of it - after the show, a friend of mine decided she was going to go back in and buy a CD. I sat outside waiting in the cooler air. After awhile, she didn't come back out, I went in to find her talking with the cute sax player from the band...
"Hey, you old enough to drink?" he asks.
"Well I am" my friend answers.
"I'm not..." I sigh. And without ability to sway them to go somewhere else but Luckey's, my friend walks off with not only the sax player, but the bassist as well. Alcohol is not something I am interested in.
Hello all,

Alright, last time I spoke with you all, I made the statement that I was leaving for good due to some of my pictures showing up in the forum of a Skin Head site with hurtful comments. Those pictures were not linked to DA, they were linked to my actual on-line journal. Additionally, not doing pin-ups has had a rather negative impact on me. Also as I said in my past entry, I am a recovering anorexic and being here helped me. It really, really helped. Since leaving DA, I have had more breakdowns about my body image in the time away than I had within five or so months with DA. So what I am basically saying is that I need this. I need to be here. So, good news, I'm coming back. Really. Yes. I'm going to take many more precautions about my photos as well. Watermarks will be put on all items and none will be available for download.

My return is going to be slow, because I want to take the time to do some touch ups on past photos, and be more selective on what ones are posted. Not to mention I do have my school work. Spring term is a murder. New pictures will be up within the next month or so as well. Several shoots include emulating period pin-ups from such artists as Vargas, Driben, Armstrong, Moran, and Elvgren, of course.

Thank you to those of you who commented on my past entry! And I look forward to your future comments!

Man, I've got my job cut out for me. I doubt many will be posted right off the bat, but enjoy the first few that are indeed returning.

Much love,
Janey

Finals are in a week, and I'm extremely nervous, so Pat suggested doing some pin-ups this weekend to relax--many of which turned out great, but need a little refining, which is Patrick's department. So look for a few new ones sometime soon! Including a small WWII/Korea shoot series called "For the Boys". Some of my all-time favorite shots came out of this.

Not much else going on aside from college killing me. I am switching to History as my major, with a minor in Communication.
Now, normally I use this journal to give updates on pin-up info and the like, but this is too important not to discuss.

Today is National Blog for Choice Day. Why today? Well, it's the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade! Now, I am going to start out by saying I hate abortion. I think it's a horrible thing, but for the safety of some women, it is an option that needs to be available in a clean and safe environment. Some women I do know take advantage of the right to an abortion because they just didn't want to use a condom or something, but wrongly taking advantage of something is everywhere.

Secondly, "Pro-Choice" does not mean "Pro-Abortion". Pro-Choice means you are for the right to contraception, you agree that it is good for women to be able to make choices regarding their sexuality when they find themselves ready, and to do it as safely as possible--this means access to condoms, the pill, the ring, Plan B, etc. Abortion is among the list, though often regarded as a last resort.

While I am not a fan of stats, mainly because they are often so one-sided it seems...I will say that the abortion rate is actually at an all-time low since Roe v. Wade. But I think we can get the rate even lower without harsh extremes.

Better sex education is a start. Abstinence only education doesn't work. Thus, better information on consequences and preventatives should be shared. Remember, knowledge is power. The more educated people are, the better off they are. More education should also go into drugs often used for date rape and how to prevent that from happening. While I don't like the idea of telling girls what to do and what not to do, just don't leave your drink unattended, and also, ask yourself what good does getting drunk really do?

Better access to protection is also important. While I don't encourage early sexual activity, I think school nurses should carry condoms and Plan B, and have information regarding places for girls to go to get the pill, ring or other form of stronger contraception.

Women should plan sex around their period. The week before a woman's period is when she is the most fertile, thus either less sex, or no sex is a better bet. Plan B is something all women should keep on hand. It costs anywhere from $25-$40 though, but better safe than sorry. Men should use spermicidal condoms. They cost the same as normal condoms--at least at Target anyways, $12.69 for a box of 36.

Many colleges now have wonderful health centers offering a wide range of choices. My school has a plan called FPEP (it's a nationwide program) where if eligible, students can get the pill, Plan B, condoms, exams, and much more for free or a reduced rate. The center does not, however, provide abortions, but is a place to turn to to get more information. I highly recommend checking it out if you think sex is in your near future.

If you want to have sex, think before you act. Talk with someone, go get a box of condoms, check out to see if there is a Planned Parenthood nearby. The act of sex is not worth the agony one might go through in an unplanned pregnancy and possible abortion.

I also want to touch on the idea of those who advocate for abortions or have one being labeled "baby killers" because the road goes two ways here. If abortions are outlawed, we go back to back-alley-coat-hanger abortions where women run risk of dying. Thus, those who advocate against abortions, you're "women killers". Additionally, many of those who are against abortion, advocate for the killing of doctors who perform abortions, and even go as far as celebrating a "success" (may I present a re-enactment [link]).

Who am I bashing on here? Only two groups of people, those against choice, and those who wrongly take advantage of abortion rights. Actions to prevent pregnancy need to be taken, whether that is abstinence or the pill, lowering the abortion rate is possible without taking the right to an abortion away.

Winter term has started, and it's going to be horrid...so much reading...essays to be written...deadlines to be made...and all of this without an hour of work this week or next. Image the stress that is going to ensue once that happens. *sigh* New Pin-Ups hopefully next weekend, meanwhile, I hope you have been enjoying my own personal work.

My mood is still "Rant" because of the complete stupidity of some of the admins and mods here on DA. Every day at least once, if not maybe five times a day I look at the recently posted photos for the "Photography > Pin Up" category, and every time I am amazed at what people are putting in there. Self-portraits where you can still see the arm (no retro flavor at all), some are of men spinning a basketball. I have even come across photos of Barbies. One would think these idiots don't read the "Gallery Info" before posting such ridiculousness. Just to make things clear here, this is the "Gallery Info" for "Pin-up" as deemed by DA:

"Retro styled pin-up photography in the 1940's/50's stylized fashions, with emphasis on hair, make-up and period clothing."

I just want to make a couple things clear:
The "Retro styled pin-up" that many think of began in the 1930s and lasted until the 1960s. The well-known Gil Elvgren worked up into the 1970s.
The "Winter Wonderland" series posted was originally taken from this pin-up: [link]
While not exact, she was an inspiration. The series I posted ended up in "Scraps" where I then sent it to "Glamour"
"Wanna Play" was moved to "Scraps", when it was inspired by the pin-up artwork of several pulp books, vintage clothing was used, as well as a period switchblade.
Also, a key item that is overlooked in the idea of pose. Pose is key to being considered "pin-up"

So what I basically am saying is that people need to look at the "Gallery Info" of a category before posting in it and seriously consider some things. I also don't believe that admins have not done their research do deem what is to be in the "Pin-Up" category. God, who knew there were so many idiots here.

This entire entry might be in vain, but I just needed to get it off my chest.

Hello all!

UPDATE: My most recent picture were moved to "Scraps"...grr...Okay, seriously. What the hell is going on? I see people in the "Pin-Up" category who certainly should not be in there! Anyways...Patrick said it might be because I didn't put a "Mature" filter on the stuff, so from now on everything is going to be posted with a "Mature Content" warning for "Sexual Themes" and sometimes "Nudity". Dear god. Admins, go after the people who are posting scans of Johnathan Taylor Thomas and the people who don't even know who Elvgren or Petty are. Sheesh!

Well, as you can see, I am not gone. I chose not to let one little admin ruin my love of doing pin-ups. I figure if something was going to stop me from this it would have to be some real creep. And lately, I haven't gotten any. So...I'm back and with full force. The ones I just put up Patrick and I kicked out just a few hours ago and I have to say I was thrilled to be posing in front of the camera. It's a great start to the winter holiday.

Thanks for all the supportive comments!
Spring break comes to a close (which was just hell), and Spring Term is starting, which I am both excited, and scared to no end. For it includes a women's studies class, a sociology class, and rock climbing!

In more pin-upy news...new items were purchased that hope to get in front of the camera.
-red heels with white poka-dots
-new corset (I have still yet to show off 'em all though)
-retro style men's pajamas
-Three new pairs of stockings

Since I have chose not to delete my account, I ask very simply that those who are viewing my artwork view it as that; artwork. Let me say that again for those of you who didn't quite get it; ARTWORK! Does that mean you can look at it, or other people's artwork for that matter, with your hand down your pants? No. While I understand that some of my pictures could be considered of the sexual nature, they are a far cry from what would be considered pornography, and I would like it if those who comment, fav, and watch be artists, and not here simply to create a collection of naked or half naked women for their sick and twisted pleasure because they have nothing better to do with their lives. I don't think that's asking too much.

I am very much a feminist when it comes to certain topics, and having my body, or any other female body, for that matter, objectified is one of them. If I find out that you are watching or fav'ing my pictures and you are not an artist, and that your favorites only consist of sexually oriented subject matter, you will be blocked. The same goes for sexually oriented comments. I will not tolerate it. Understand?

Just because my gallery is public, I don't believe I should be a part of something I do not approve of. And you, the viewer, are the only person who can make that happen. So if you are so desperate that you must resort to looking at women on the computer for pleasure do not comment, fav, or watch. It's not too difficult, and remember, if you do, I have the glorious power to block you.

I am not deleting my account. If I do, I'm letting the pervs win. And I really don't want that. So, what I am now going to do is ignore those who watch, and fav, and only take action if there are comments of a nature I object to. I really have nothing else to say that wouldn't come across like a rant. So...yeah.

I have chosen to delete my account, because of several reasons. I am so tired of people adding me as friends or adding my pictures to their favorites who are only using deviantART as a website for pornographic use and nature. I am deeply against pornography in every sense, yet do not find what I do as pornographic. But because of the nature of those who look at my pictures view my work as that nature, I am choosing to leave deviantART. I will be deleting my pictures, so they will no longer be available.

Note: this decision is not determined, but in all likelihood is going to happen. And decided to be respectful to those who were respectful in comments and understood the original nature and intent of my pictures.

Thanks to those of you who were respectful, understanding and supportive.
