I think it's time I come clean about something....

I've turned into an asshole. Pure and simple.

I wasn't always this way. It took many screwings over several years by multiple entities to nurture my inner asshole-ishness to it's current state. I never wanted to be an asshole, I've always tried being fair and accommodating toward people, but people in general have slowly turned me into one.

Where am I going with this?

I got the "magazine tear" in the mail today. More specifically, I got a copy from a color laser printer as it appears here:

[link]

What's the problem? Well, it's nice and all, but it's not a genuine tear. I could have done the same thing off of my R1800 and have achieved a better looking print too since I've got the original high resolution PSD files, not to mention I use better paper (Ilford) and not something that feels like ancient fax machine thermal paper. So, what's the big deal you ask?

Anybody want to take me up on a bet that IT WAS NEVER A PRINT MAGAZINE TO BEGIN WITH? God knows I've never seen the mag at my local mag shop (and they carry some really obscure magazines from Europe that I've never seen before). What makes me think even more that these assholes were never legitimate to begin with is that that nice "niftmag.com" domain... it's registered under a private registration. NIIIICE! As we all know, legitimate businesses make it so you have to sue them to find out their contact information (which is exactly what you have to do with private registrations; a court needs to subpoena the domain registrar). Doesn't that just instill confidence in these guys? I know I get the warm and fuzzies thinking about it.

The additional insult? THEY CHARGED THE MODEL $30 FOR THE 8.5x11 PRINT! She told me this after the fact on the phone today. They wouldn't even give her a copy of the magazine either... and here's the kick in the shins folks, supposedly they all of a sudden decided to "go green" and became a web-only publication. The magazine is now a PDF file you can download off of the net for, get this, $19.95.

Now, anybody reading this, please answer this truthfully. How many of you are going to pony up $19.95 for a PDF file? My guess... not a single one of you. That's not a dig at any of you, but rather it's to illustrate my next point.

The only people who would buy a copy of that PDF file is either the models appearing in it, or a photographer who submitted their work to them and wants the tear. The whole thing reeks of being a take on the old "your work has been selected" art scam ([link]).

I'm willing to bet $10 that their business model is to convince models and photographers that submitting their work to them for free is beneficial to them for the exposure, but then charge the models and photographers to buy back a "tear" or the PDF magazine itself. They then run a contest where they charge people $1 to vote for their favorite model (and get the models to network and get people to vote for them) to get them to the #1 spot. Pretty "nifty", huh? I guess that's how they came up with the name.

I wouldn't doubt it if the whole thing is being run out of some guy's parents basement...

Oh yeah... almost forgot to mention; at the last minute they apparently pulled my photo of Michelle in the PDF magazine and replaced it with another photo of her that she submitted. So, even if you did buy the digital copy of the magazine, you wouldn't see a copy of my photo in it.

That pinup book that I was solicited to submit work to? It's pretty much the same BS. The author of the book is doing almost the same thing, except that he never brought up the issue of getting a tear/book. I talked to another pinup artist in my area that he solicited and he told her that she could buy copies of the book at a reduced rate.

Can you say "blow it out your ass?" I know I can! I had found that little bit of info out when I was debating going through with it. Maybe it's a bit more clear now why I didn't even bother asking him for copies of the book; I knew he wasn't going to do so. In short, it's a one-way street. I suspect he never told me that little tidbit of info over the phone too because he could tell I wasn't thrilled with his "recognition only" compensation.

For those interested, the name of the book is supposed to be called "Great American Pin-up Art", published by Schiffer Books out of PA, and should be released sometime in 2010. I won't be buying a copy; I hope none of you do either. None of th...

So.. I'm sure most of you who read my last journal have been wondering what choice I made about having my work published in that book. I thought hard about it for a while and took everything into consideration. I even talked to another photographer that the author hit up that he wanted to use their work for free. My response to him was:

"Hello ******,

I received the paperwork that you sent in the mail the other day and I have had time to review it. After much consideration and debating, I have decided not to partake of this endeavor.

My work costs a not-so-insignificant amount of my time and capital to produce. The vendors who produce the products that I use to create the works of art that I make, be it Canon, Hensel Studiotechnik, Wacom, Temptu cosmetics, etc, all require that I compensate them financially for all the products of theirs that I use and do not accept recognition as a valid form of payment. Unfortunately that means I cannot accept recognition as a valid form of compensation for using my work in a commercial endeavor.

If you would like to discuss licensing my work for your book I am open to negotiating a fair rate that would be mutually beneficial to all parties involved. In lieu of that, I cannot accept recognition as compensation for my work appearing in a for-profit commercial publication.

Respectfully,

Manuel Rego"

I received a reply shortly afterwards. The response wasn't quite unexpected:

"Hi Manny,

I understand completely. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Best regards,

******"

Am I a little disappointed? Yes. I'm not heart-broken though. Given everything I've seen, he was only interested in filling the book with whatever pinup work he could get his hands on, be it quality or crap work. While I'm sure that there'll be some people who let him use their work in this book for recognition only, while he and the book publisher profit from it, I'm fairly certain that it'll be work from individuals who just don't care about their work in the first place.

In the end I don't feel that it's fair that not only I, but THE MODELS in the photographs get nothing out of a commercial book and be asked to work for free. "Free Labor" in the United States was abolished on December 18, 1865. I find it upsetting that after an entire war, and not to mention nearly 144 years later, people still try to make slaves out of others in this country and profit from the hard work of others.

The individual had seen some of my pinup work that I had did with a particular model and wants to include my work in a pinup book that's going to be published shortly.

Now on the onset this is pretty cool. It means that I can say that I've been published, and that my work will be seen by a much wider audience. There's only one thing that's bugging me...

...they don't want to pay me to use the work.... :/

Yeah, you read that correctly. We're talking about a rather large book publishing firm here. They're going to be paying the editors of the book to put it together. They're going to be charging the public to buy the book. But, when it comes to the people who's work is actually going to be IN the book, they're supposed to work for free. :/

Part of me is saying NO for obvious reasons, but a part of me is saying YES since it does mean I get published, and my work will get viewed by a wider audience.

What say all? Yes or No? Should I say yes and ask that they send me some copies of the book too? Should I say no and tell them to go pound sand up their rectum? How about supporting your favorite model(s) instead?

It's no big secret that I have very little respect for the prints system here on DA. With the way it's set up, it's almost like working for the RIAA, just less glamorous. I've had a handful of people ask me in the past about buying prints and whatnot, but because of the way DA handles it, unless you sell a print so that you make $0.10 cents off of it, it's so cost prohibitive that nobody wants to buy anything (which is totally understandable).

So, I just want to make it known that if there's a photo that you'd like a print of, if you contact me directly I can sell you a print for a lot less than what I could ever offer it on here for through DA's print system.

For example, a 16x20 inch print, WITH SHIPPING would only be $32.

The side effect is that not only do you pay less for the print, I get more of the profit, which means I CAN GIVE MORE TO THE MODELS.

Obviously I don't expect to make a living off of selling prints. Believe it or not, I'm not really doing this because I'm trying to get money for myself here. I'm doing it because I'm getting tired of models getting the shaft...

So if you won't do it for me, do it for the models.

Now, if you want to do something for ME....

This is going to sound totally off the wall and out of character. In other words, you cannot take the images and photoshop them into your own work, create a derivative work, call it your own work, or try to sell them.

2) WATERMARKS MUST BE KEPT IN PLACE AND NOT...

Kinda....

It's what I initially thought, it's the alternator on my car making all that racket. Apparently the thing died and took out my battery too!

So what's the humor portion here? The service advisor is trying to convince me to put in a NEW alternator.... at a cost of almost $1000

BWHABAHAHAHAHA!!!

I literally laughed at him. . Putting in a new $1000 alternator in a six year old car with 205,000 miles on it makes no sense since it'll be worth more than the car.

So he supposedly goes and checks local vendors to see if he can get a remanufactured part. Ya know, I may be crazy, but I'm far from dumb here.... he tries to convince me that no one makes a remanufactured alternator for my car.

LOL! That's why I already located one from a local parts shop. LOL!

These service advisors, they're so funny!

As I pulled into the parking lot I could hear a really annoying whining noise. At first I thought it was another car that had passed me. As I pulled into the spot though, that's when I realize it was MY CAR making that annoying whining noise. Uh-oh....

Long story short, I've narrowed it down to either the clutch throwout bearing, the alternator, the air conditioner, or (heaven forbid) the main bearing in the engine.

If that wasn't bad enough, as I was driving home from the store I lost all electrical power in the car. I was on the highway when all of a sudden the car just died. The engine kept running, but everything electrical in the car just turned off. Mind you, this was at 2AM...

So here I am coasting along thinking I'm royally screwed. I see that the rear defogger is still on so I hit the button to turn in off to see if I can at least make it to the next exit. Wouldn't you know, the car all of a sudden came back to life?

I made it home, but man.... talk about a bit of a scare.

So anyways, I had the car looked at. Nobody can figure out what's causing the noise. It's only a whisper now compared to what it was on Friday night, but there's something definitely still wrong with it. Guess I'm gonna have to plunk down the cash to have the dealer look at it.

I really shouldn't complain too loudly though. I managed to get at least 205,200 miles out of the car before it started giving me any trouble.

Had my keys in hand, ready to start the car and drive on down that old highway, never to turn back.

Heck, I dunno if anyone's noticed but I had the windows boarded up, curtains draped over the furniture, the gas and the electricity turned off... I was ready to leave for good.

Then I kinda came to my senses.

The past couple of months have been a trip, that's for sure! Those of you who followed the drama can attest to that. At the end of it all, I actually did learn two very important things:

1) Don't sweat the small stuff.
2) Don't alienate your fan base.

It took me longer than it should have to realize that I really needed to pull my head out from my ass. I didn't enjoy the view, and the ensuing muscle cramps were a real bitch. It's sorta like eating a few bars of sugar-free candy w/Malitol, and wondering why you have explosive diarrhea afterwards.

OK, bad example.

*ANYWAYS*, what I'm getting at is it took me a while, but I realized I was taking my frustrations out on the wrong people: YOU.

I had the wrong expectations of this place. Instead of using DA like I should have, I kept trying to use it in a way that, in reality, wasn't going work.

I know that's kinda vague. It's kinda hard to quantify into words. All I can say is that when you start coming to your senses, and a person like KEN MARCUS puts a posting somewhere that almost word for word describes what you've been thinking about doing, you know that:

a) What you were doing in the past was wrong.
b) What you were thinking about doing was RIGHT.
and c) You know what you've gotta do to not only make things right, but what you need to do altogether.

One thing that was driving me insane with DA was thieves. Thing is, they're everywhere. It doesn't matter where you go, there'll always be someone out there trying to make a buck off of other people's work. You can't stop it from happening, but you can go after them.

This place also has it's fair share of assholes too, but to use a quote from Lord DarkHelmut "I'm surrounded by assholes!". The majority of you are good people though; and in reality there's only five people whom I have had to add to my banlist here for being chronic assholes. There's one other snapper head (you know who you are son <img src="http://e.de...

Spring's around the corner, so I figured I'd sell off some unused camera gear. If anybody's interested in the following, send me an email (manny@mregophoto.com).

- Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro (Canon mount). It's in very good condition. All the photos that everyone has seen on here was taken using it. Glass is perfectly clear with no fungus. Focusing ring has some dirt on it (I'd clean it before sending it). Lens hood is a little loose, but can be made snug again. Lens was calibrated and rechipped to work flawlessly with my Canon 5D. It happens to be a really sharp copy of the lens too.

I've owned it since October 2005, which means there's about 1.5 years left on the US 4 year warranty. It was my main lens that I used all the time.

Lens also includes an 82mm B+W multicoated slim circular polarizer. The polarizer itself goes for $199 (this ain't your father's cheap Tiffen polarizer...).

Asking $400+shipping for the lens + polarizer.

- Canon Rebel 2000 w/a Quantaray (Sigma) 28-90 lens and battery grip. This one's old skool folks (it's film!). It takes standard 35mm film, and CR2 batteries. With the included battery grip, it can use four standard AA batteries though.

$50+shipping takes it away...

Obviously, I'm not selling off my other gear (dSLR'S, lenses, lighting equip., etc). I replaced the 24-70 with something "a little better". No, the something "a little better" isn't for sale.

For those wondering, no I haven't stopped shooting. I'll admit, I've turned into something of a prick lately though. I refuse to be the male photographer equivalent of a Diva, but I've become super picky about who I work with and where I display it.

My work's all but gone from here, but that doesn't exactly mean I haven't been shooting at all. I'm toying with the idea of putting up one that I took over the weekend that's REALLY REALLY cool, but I'm having a hard time justifying it really. If someone can make a compelling argument to me about posting it, I'll put it up.

If my work isn't here, then where is my work being displayed online now? Don't think to hard.... The intelligent among you probably just figured out one location. I've been updating my work on a few other locations as well too.

There's more going on as well. Thanks to an individual by the name of James, those of you in the Providence Rhode Island area will be able to see some select prints of mine hanging up in a shop downtown.

I've also been trying to get some of my work into this museum: [link] . I've also been keeping my ear to the ground for juried exhibitions. I have my eye on one at the moment that looks promising.

I've also been talking to my local Fredericks of Hollywood store. Unfortunately they being part of a big conglomerate, you're not going to be seeing my work gracing their pages any time soon. All the same, I've been using A LOT of their clothing for my past couple of shoots (pitty there are so many fucking thieves here on DA, or I'd share them with all of you. ), and if you went into the store and asked them if there are any photographers in the area that they know of who do boudoir photography, they'd show you my port. Not too shabby, huh?

As I said before, I've become super picky about who I work with these days. I still shoot with my muses, and we've got something totally off the wall planned too. On the other hand, I know I've pissed off a few models recently, one especially too. Truth be told, I'm not losing sleep.

Long story short, part of it stems from doing free work for a business that she's helping to promote. The other part was that I was working my ass off to get her photos, and getting nothing in return except for a major attitude (along the lines that she was doing ME a favor by working TFP with me...... . BZZZT! WRONG! Next contestant please! ). I had been blowing her off for well over a month, figuring she'd get the hint. I ended up having a very civil conversation with her yesterday...
