anyway, for those of you who were aware i experimented with computer colouring seriously for the first time in order to enter a contest, i didn't win, but i have learned many new things about colouring. ~unknownspecies was right, the colours do not go all on one layer. you're meant to colour under the lines not over them, and digital colouring and painting are two different things.

considering i had no idea what i was doing i'm still happy with the result [and amazed i didn't wind up with a bunch of colourful blobs]. although i think i'd like to learn more about both colouring and painting on a computer. both seem interesting. i won't be doing anything further before i learn how to, though. there are so many tutorials on here and a lot look helpful, but i have no real idea where to start.

from the looks of things it might be a case of going through many different tutorials and taking a bit from each.

*kankakanka was making sprites a while back, got flooded with requests, and has since put up bases so people who missed out [because the request numbers were in the hundreds] could make their own. thanks kankakaka, they're great =]

i made a maned wolf kurosaki ichigo sprite for me because i'm a geek, and a sprite of ~Proitzen's original character i offered to make, ~unknownspecies requested a sprite though i was going to offer one anyway.

[link]
[link]

~InoshishiUchi and ~Deus-Ex-Letum, if you two want me to make one, let me know, though as deus makes far better sprites than i ever could it'll be funny if he wants one.

the bases you can choose from are in kankakanka's journal. any character/colour variation is fine to suggest but the less additional items/markings, the better i seem to be at it [you want me to pile it with stuff, you risk it looking odd].

and as these are relatively quick to make, i'm not doing anything i shouldn't injury wise.

thanks to all the concerned people who have the decency and sense to yell at me or enforce rest when i'm being too stupid, stubborn, or obliviously determined to do as i should.

first real computer piece i've done, ever.

you people with your all computer art are insane, how can you draw and colour like that, yikes. it'd be faster to paint if i smushed my face into a paint tray, got my eyelashes covered in paint and blinked at a piece of paper [i am so tired, that was so much -work-].

anyway, something like 10 days of solid digital painting later, and i'm done. this was for a banner contest, but i already feel like i've won because -

- i did this practically no handed, moving my left arm/hand at all was causing problems, so it got a few drawn pencil guidelines then nothing else until it hit the screen. then i used only my left index finger and thumb without moving the rest of my arm.

- it is my first real digital piece, right down to the outlines. i was making it up as i go with almost all of these effects or drawing on what i know

- i got it done /just/ before the deadline, whoo.

- just because things happen; which stop me from using my arms, drawing right handed, or even left handed, and colouring using conventional methods, doesn't mean fate/circumstance/injury can stop me participating in life and entering a drawn banner contest if i darn well want to. it just makes it a heck of a lot harder.

all that said, winning would still be nice, but i doubt it's likely [nah i'm not telling them the lengths and effort i went to to either, it wouldn't be fair on the other contestants who also tried their best.] i also had fun doing it [some of the time anyway] hopefully i learned something of computer colouring [other than 'i will have to be insane or very desperate before i try this again']

---------

for injury update news, all joints are starting to pull together again at last, and now i can carefully, carefully try regaining some of the lost muscle while everything continues to heal/set. it'll be a long while yet before i can move my right arm/hand again though.

person who gets the most right answers wins a commission to be completed as soon as i can move my right arm again, or sooner if they want a left handed picture [i am right handed] i don't do nudity/extreme gore/fetish/romance/sex pictures. competition is open to all though you'll have better luck if you know me really well, or use my gallery as a guide [and if you get everything wrong, don't worry, some of these topics are unlikely to appear in years of conversation]. note me the answers if you don't want anyone else seeing possible mistakes, or comment them anyway ;]
Despite being fairly specific, And your problem would be... out favourited the previous maximum favourited Annoyed and out paged viewed 002-Love. First right-handed picture of mine to beat both left-handed title holders. Overall happy, but slightly mixed feelings about that.

Anyway, am recovering from the virus and I bring art! (yes, along with sleeping a lot I drew a few things as well), it won't be scanned for a while yet though.

Something else neat, it seems a few new people have been favouriting and commenting on Voltron's Red Lion (yeah, guess who just looked up how to link to deviations in the help section ). Makes me very happy as I love mecha/robots but am not that good at drawing/colouring them (particularly Zoids) and was pleased with how Red turned out. Seems a decent way to colour robots, so, short of learning how to use digital effects and colouring I might try that combination of media again for future mecha/robot colouring
Edit: Dammit Tori, stop tagging me!

1. Add up the price of the clothes you are wearing.

Have no idea, these aren't my clothes.

2. Add up the pageviews of all the accounts you own.

This is my only account, 316.

3. What have you eaten today?

Pizza, udon noodle soup, a pasty.

4. Write the last thing you heard?

Know

5. List 5 things you see next to you.

Half eaten pasty on a plate.
Beast Wars DVD.
Robotech DVD.
Transformers comics.
Exercise weights.

6. The first word that comes into your head?
Booyah (absolutely no idea why)

7. One funny thing that’s happened to you today?

While watching Robotech, Rick was complaining to Minmay(sp) about how whenever he talks marriage she falls asleep. Someone in my family walked past at that second, stopped, and stared, and we both cracked up laughing. Unfortunately I was drinking coffee at the time.

8. Put your music player on shuffle. Click the skip/next song button 5 times. What’s playing now?

Beats me, I kill the playlist each time I finish with it, and turned it off just before this edit. It'd likely be songs from the bands involved with Bleach or else Transformers the original movie's sound track, as I've been listening to both recently.

It's a Tori induced plot

Post 8 random/interesting facts about yourself:

1. I play the airguitar, in public! YEAH! Subsequently I'm probably embarrassing to be seen with in public. I have a head/sweatband with Rock, Paper, and Scissors, and Air guitar championships advertised on it, it's one of my favourite things to wear (again, likely embarrassing).

2. I'm six generations Australian, my ancestors were some of the first people to arrive in this state. Despite this I have relatively no distinct cultural heritage I can identify with (either from what my ancestors had or from Australia itself). I'm proud and happy to live here most of the time, but it's not like my half greek or half itallian friends, who even if they've never seen Greece or Italy have a heck of a bond and sense of identity in being part whatever (while ignoring their Australian side and the country they live in almost completely). I don't talk like Paul Hogan or Steve Irwin, I sound relatively normal and about the most common difference it makes to my language is that I spell words with an over abundance of U's and S instead of Z a lot.

3. I have been playing video games since I was fourteen months old I'd rather not imagine life without them and I hope I'll always be able to play them. I play most game to completion, and some I play over and over and over and over and over and still find them fun each time.

4. I am now more ambidextrous than I was at the start of the year. I can write and draw left and right handed despite being right handed. Note I didn't say I could write and draw well with both hands

5. I like weird things, and am generally not afraid of stating I like weird things; as I like so many weird things or things that people may be afraid to admit they liked that if I tried not to talk about all the weird things I like and do I would have nothing to say to anyone ever. ;D

6. I don't really like music. That is, I can appreciate it, especially at concerts with real instruments (which I love), and have studied it at highschool, I like playing instruments and making up tunes, but I am not likely to turn on a radio, ever. Or constantly listen to music by various contemporary bands. The only music I really love is usually something either videogame or cartoon/movie/anime sound track related, in which case I will listen to it on eternal loop until the people around me start making whimpering noises and begging for it to stop.

7. I have no true favourite colour. This seems to disappoint people and make it hard for me to take personality quizzes on which favourite colour is a required question. I like many colours and specifically colour combinations. Grey may possibly be as close to I have as a true favourite, I like it for its versatility, various shades, relation to many metal colours, and compatibility with other colours, eg, Red.

8. If my stomach and teeth could cope, I would definitely be 100% omnivorous *chews on a piece of metal*

Not quite sure how these things work, but...I'm also going to be lazy and copy part of what I wrote in reply to the person who tagged me XP

"List ten things about your art, then tag ten people to do the same."

1. I can now draw with some degree of skill, both right and left handed, due to an injury earlier in the year that I am still recovering from. A majority of my gallery's content was drawn left handed. I am Right-handed naturally and drawing left-handed makes me feel upside down some how, is awkward, difficult and slow, but I can draw left handed. Thanks to some encouragement and the fact that it seems sad to let that go to waste, I am still going to draw left-handed occasionally, even though my right arm is recovering and mostly usable again.

2. I hate my mistakes and failed attempts but, without them I would never learn how to make pictures that weren't mistakes and failed attempts. My art teacher made me keep my less than wonderful attempts at things even though I wanted to throw them away, and I think not only did I learn from them, but looking back I can see what progress I've made.

What turns out well is excellent, and what doesn't turn out well is important in knowing how to make more things turn out well, in both writing and visual art

3. I have no real preferred media or subject or even paper size or format (and worked very hard while studying to become skilled in multiple media). Unless I set out to specifically draw something my art process usually involves first thinking of an idea, then what subject matter could be used to represent that, then what media/format would best represent the subject matter. That said, sometimes I just set out to draw something in conte because its fun, or charcoal because I want to make something black and white with shades of grey I do generally like detail and media that allows me to use it, but can enjoy both viewing and making pictures in any media of almost any style or subject.

4. I am better at realistically copying things, and well known for it, however that's not the kind of art I ultimately want to do XD I'd much rather be able to make things up from scratch than act like a glorified outdated camera. I would love to become proficient in anime/manga style, cartooning or just weeeird made up creatures.

5. I have been drawing my entire life, ever since I could hold a pencil, and was drawing recognizable identifiable pictures at age two (you'd think I'd be better at it by now, really ). I have always been obsessed with detail, four year old me realized planks had woodgrain and nails and added them in as best I could (yeah, there is no hope, it's ingrained). I was one of the few kids in my school class to work out the sky went clear down to the horizon and drew it such while everyone else would do a tiny strip of blue near the top of their pictures. Inaccurate detail annoys me no end, always has, I'm trying to work on that though, and I can really appreciate art that isn't 100% accurate or meant to be.

6. I am not good at digital art, my art courses never included it. It's something I'd like to work on, specifically as a webpage designer. I have had some success scanning non digital art and working it into a webpage, but a large amount of it looks dull or doesn't scan well. Computers have so many colours available and digital colouring has a nice solid feel. I'd love to be able to work as well with digital programs as I can with standard art media, and particularly like solid simple colours/pictures, or pictures that look as though they've been done using oil paints only via a computer (heavy layering, extreme detail, darkness working up to light, etc).

7. At least half my art is fluke. Not many people know that. They see one or two really good pictures of mine and think "Oh wow you can draw well all the time" which is not the case. I know how to apply certain media in certain ways to give certain effects, I studied all that but when it comes down to it there's a lot I can mess up in every individual picture and if it makes it to the end without being ruined, and is how I want it to look it's a miracle. I have bad days and sometimes I'm sure an alien has sucked all my artistic skill and talent clear out my head and all I can do is draw ugly weird doodles.

Some people are good all the time, I'm not one of them I've included both bad and good scraps/devi...

I think I finally found every last comment! Many thanks again to everyone who commented, and I'm very sorry for taking so long in replying.

My right arm is going well and I've drawn a total of three proper pictures with it currently (Cue dance of extreme happiness) watch out for them soon.

I became reasonably interested in left-handedness while unwillingly left-handed. I am right-handed although I've always been slightly ambidextrous, and have never tried drawing or writing to any great degree with my left hand before this injury (everything seems backwards and strange). I found a lot of things (example: scissors, taps, doors, the english language) are not really meant to be used left-handed and also read there is a fair amount of negative bias towards left-handed people in many countries still.

I have a few friends who're exceptionally talented artists and left-handed, and although it's confusing to me to draw that way, I know they'd feel that way if they tried drawing with their right hands

One of the ways given that right-handed people become left-handed is through an inability to use their right hand for six or more months (in which case even after they're able to use their right they prefer to use their left) - I couldn't use mine for four, and started 'thinking' with my left hand for the last two of those months, in other words I'd automatically attempt to pick something up with my left, go to touch something or write with my left.

As soon as I was even able to move my right arm a little that started vanishing rapidly, and now even though it isn't 100% healed or usable I automatically attempt to do something with my right arm

Now that I can actually move my right arm to some degree and use it for things such as typing, drawing and writing, my left arm has, except for things my right arm physically cannot do yet, been resigned in what I do to the status it held prior to the injury.

Although... The other day I found myself picking something up with my right hand, and writing several letters on it with my left, before I realised what I was doing, so maybe there is a little left-handed/ambidextrous remnant left from this

I fervently hope my right arm continues to heal, and I never have to be one handed again, left or right, for that matter, but I also wonder what I should do about my left-handed drawings. Some of them I and several other people really liked, and although most weren't up to par with what my right is capable of, they were pretty impressive for using the hand I don't normally use.

I don't honestly think I have the patience to continuously draw left-handed when I have the easier and better option of using my right, but at the same time scrapping all that work and potential in my left-hand seems a waste.

Maybe, occasionally, I'll try drawing with my left-hand sometimes. Just because.

My right arm is finally starting to heal! Although my left isn't too great at the moment (talk about a switch, I'm happy to have either working though). I've done a few right handed scribbles and one or two left-handed things since my last entry, but won't be able to upload them for a bit.

Inspiration is on a low ebb and drawing isn't really easy right now so don't expect any pictures for a while. I am gradually building up the muscles in my right arm again by replying to some long over due comments, but the control and use of my right arm is fairly limited for the moment.
It's been a rough month but things are slowly starting to pick up now.

My right arm is gradually looking like it's back on the road to healing (as opposed to off the road and crashed in a ditch) and I'll see the physio tomorrow again to hopefully confirm that and start again with the tiny build up exercises.

In the mean time I have hurt my left foot, but that's really neither here nor there as I can still walk on it and apart from hurting a lot it's gradually getting better as well.

All in all I have been somewhat slow in my comment replies, because of various rehab rubbish and general crud feeling, and for that I apologize. I will get to them all and reply, it just might take a while

Several people seem to like my left-handed drawings and that makes me really happy (some have even been favourited, and by multiple people! ). I only started this as a way the stem off the creative flood that I couldn't act on with my right arm busted, and as a way to kill the one armed boredom. I thought after my first few attempts that I'd never be able to do anything but bad scribbles with my left hand, but I'm slowly improving. And it's good, I'm really lucky I can still express myself in this way and convey ideas, or just doodle for the heck of it It's all good.

And who knows, by the time my right arm heals my left handed drawings may even be its equal

I haven't been drawing as much lately (Commenting isn't the only thing that's lucked out currently) but I do have several pictures on the runway and ready to take off, I'm just waiting for a helpful relative to come along and help out with the scanning (Yes, the scanning lessons went remarkably well). I have colour withdrawl symptoms also, so I've been trying to work with conte left-handed with limited success and lots of mess (it's a lot harder to use left-handed than my mechanical pencil). There's really no detail to it but I'll scan those too.

I'm also doing the 100-Theme Art Challenge with my ZFT and friend, Proitzen! I had no idea there were 100 though, still, we're onto three now and going well Some of the themes are so odd... 67% is one of them o_O

I just woke up from a very disturbing dream where everything was weird and where I was aware it was very weird, then woke up and everything still felt very weird (my current lack of eloquence is evidence that I'm still kind of asleep ). It reminded me of a video game I used to play when I was four, and part way through the game everything went upside down and you had to navigate about a multistory mansion crawling about on the ceilings...

Er, anyway, speaking of weird backwards upside down things, this entire collection of scribbles will be drawn left-handed. Being right-handed I've never really tried drawing left-handed before, but, since my right arm's been stuck in a sling the last two months and seems it will be for a considerable time yet, I've started using my left.

Expect crud and you won't be disappointed

Updates will be sporadic, being obviously one-handed I can't operate this scanner on my own. I also have no idea how successfully I can train my family to scan anything, let alone pictures, but we'll see...
