The whole damn floor was flooded, and the water had seeped into the adjoining (carpeted!!) room, leaving a five-foot-long puddle.

I will refrain from swearing, so here's the long and the short of it: I have to spend the weekend (plus Monday and possibly Tuesday) at my parents' place while my landlord and groundskeeper clean up and then shampoo the carpet, as well as try ot figure out what caused the mess in the first place. (They suspect the water leak short-circuited the smoke alarm, which made it trill on and off erratically for the next hour and a half.)

Needless to say, I am pretty shaken and pissed-off, but with any luck they'll fix what went wrong and I'll be able to return home soon. Hey, at least I'm a renter and not the owner---otherwise the clean-up would have been on my shoulders.

Uh, it was a line drawing of a video game character. Is the entire Fan Art section of this site going to be deleted? Cause I distinctly remember numerous DDs that featured copyrighted characters, and ten bucks says the artist didn't contanct McDonald's/Disney/Warner Brothers/etc for explicit written permission first.

Either there's some bizarre e-conspiracy out to get me, OR one of the millions of losers out there who obsess over cartoon characters went report-happy for lack of anything better to do. Hmm, which could it possibly be....

...

Okay, all sarcasm aside, is DA really changing its stance on fan art? Did I miss a newsfee or something? Anybody know what's going on?

The Rules:

1. Anyone can submit as many entries as they wish.
   
2. Anything from G to NC-17 is allowed, but please keep in mind that I don't want you to get banned from DA! (In other words, you can submit outside links as entries, but I encourage you to post them on DA if you want any minor---and I do mean minor---publicity on this site).

   The first ten people who reply to this journal get put up here, along with three of my favorite deviations by them.
   
   But you have to put this in your journal as well, so no cheating!
   
   1. ~DarkAngel-Kameko has a clean and unpretentious writing style which, despite being complex, is almost minimalist in that it eschews the unnecessary frills a lot of young poets use. My three faves are Tourettes because I love the second stanza, Midas for the clever use of allegory, and Running because it sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song.
   
   2. ~subliculous1 draws the most awesome slash ever; her ideas are always original and her facial expressions are lively. My faves are Make Love AND War because it defines "in character" (and is really damn hot!), you can leave your hat on because it has the voyeuristic feel of a hidden security camera (and it's really damn hot!), and mmmmh for its clever, suggestive composition (and it's really damn hot!).
   
   3. ~MetalYoshi has a comically exaggerated drawing style that can easily survive without black outlines, which is quite rare in the world of cartoons. My faves are Vore and Inflation for both its sarcasm and its shimmering shading; DA iD for the Fleischer-esque character (look it up!); and Tutorial since I freakin' love tutorials!
   
   4. ~CoryTheProphet has a bright and slightly aboriginal minimalist style. Since they only have ten pics to choose from, this task is a lil' harder than I thought it would be!
   My three faves are Elisha, since the composition obeys the Rule of Thirds, Volvagia for the use of a (mostly) dichromatic colour scheme, and Tides of Darkness for its concise arrangement.
   
   5. ~TicklishVGScalies 's style is q uite removed from mine---in fact, I'd go so far as to say that our styles are polar opposites. Where I obsessively strive to shade every fucking insignifigant pixel, TVGS is perfectly content to upload pictures with a sharp, minimalist colour scheme. And, for that matter, my deviations are much more anal and pinched than what TVGS has to offer. My faves are That's ticklish for its balance and spontinaety; My friendly friends for its unusual archival imagery; and Teenage Bowser because.... well.... just because, okay? Shut up, that's why!
   
   6. The first word that came to mind when looking at ~Z0har 's work was "friendly". Her style is "friendly". Yeah, it doesn't make sense, but what can you do. She uses gentle colouring and flowing linework and yet her characters never look flimsy. My faves are Screw YOU for character design, Gift art for the watercolour-y feel, and Smarty because, well, I was born in the eighties.
   
   7. If artists are drugs, then =TheBourgyman is ecstacy. He gives us a vision of exaggerated, bubbly faces and candy colours than never get irritating or garish. I try to hate him because he gets like 500 times the faves I do, but he's impossible to dislike.    A preacher gets bombarded with requests for him to integrate local American politics in his sermons, to tell his congregation who and what to vote for, and what topics are Christian enough to support. They wanted him to speak out against gay marriages, let anti-abortion people hand out propoganda in the church, introduce a politician as the church-approved one to vote for, and so forth.
   
   He says NO.
   
   Now, keep in mind this fellow is no bleeding heart left-winger; he is pro-life and thinks homosexuality just ain't right. Personally he seems to support the kind of laws and politics his congregation is pushing. However, like a good man of god, he realizes that church is not about the Democratic candidate taking notes while his Republican counterpart gives his prepared spiel. Church is not about demographics, political flags, lawn signs, or the government in general. Church is not about newspaper headlines, celebrity banter, or anything really to do with the superficialities of the outside world.
   
   Church---the place of worship---should be about deepening personal spirituality, fostering bonds in the spiritual community, emulating the saints and learning from the sinners of ages past, working towards more godly lives, giving aid to the less fortunate, learning about the teachings of your Messiah, et cetera. The church is a place to develop your soul, not your ballot.
   
   In other words, this minister is kicking over the tables in the temple. Does that remind you of someone?
   
   A fifth of his congregation stormed out in a huff.
   
   Personally? I wouldn't want to have this guy as a father or even an uncle, but, god damn it, he's one of the few who has realized that the church isn't the place for candidates to spout off their rhetoric, no matter what side they're on.

   In the not-to-distant future,

   So, without further ado, let's delve into it. Original article in italics (some parts I cut for space---note me if you want to know the repetitive stuff), my comments in regular font.
   
   Whatever happened to the 1800's, when Science was considered a sacred trust? Yeah, they weren't very good at it, and put forth a lot of stupid ideas that flew only because of prejudice and limited knowledge, but they did their best to be honest.
   
   They did a really shitty job and let their personal and religious prejudices cloud their actions and obscure the scientific method---but, man, that was pure, honest science!
   
   If you want an example, just check out any "research" that touches on feminism or AIDS.
   
   When you put research in scare quotes, your credibility drops a few points. Moving on:
   
   Almost all of it is complete crap. Anything that touches both of these subjects is surely garbage. Anything on the environment is running a close third.
   
   So you've made up your mind about a subject already, and merely seeing one of three words flicks a switch in your brain that says "Ignore at all costs". Quite detached, analytical, and scientific, wouldn't you say?
   
   It seems that caring about truth, accuracy, or honesty is now considered quaint.
   
   Actually, "drilling holes in skulls to release the demons of folly because god told me to" is considered quaint.
   
   Although some people, who don't agree with my political views, may find the examples I've given irksome and even predictable, I don't want you to think that this sort of numerical monkey-business is restricted to liberals, feminists, and tree-huggers.
   
   Homosexuals, abortionists, and coloured people do it too!
   
   My point in writing all of this is to demonstrate that whenever you hear a statistic or a number on television, or read it in the newspaper, your immediate response should be
   
   "Never trust a liberal!"
   
   "Where did this number come from? Was there any research? Was the research accurately quoted? Who did the research? Were they impartial?" I do this, even when the statistic or number backs up one of my pet beliefs or theories.
   
   Let's see some evidence of this.
   
   Here's a list of some of the "science" games I've seen in the media and on the Web, in no particular order.
   
   Had you had an education, you would have heard them in English classes referred to as "rhetorical devices".
   
   "Recent studies have shown..."Anyone who includes this phrase in their argument is surely spewing nonsense. Which studies? By whom? I don't even trust most studies that are actually quoted, with names of researchers, institutions, and dates, let alone vague references to something that someone may have researched somewhere.
   
   What does it take to get you to believe---Jesus himself floating from a cloud made of testosterone holding a hand-written affidavit of truth?
   
   Feminists are famous for quoting from studies of domestic violence, noting how prevalent male-on-female violence is, while not mentioning that the same studies found female-on-male violence at almost the same levels.
   
   Which studies? Oh, I forgot... "sources" shouldn't be trusted. When a hairy-legged man-hating rug-muncher says something without backing it up, it's bullshit. When a hairy-legged man-hating rug-muncher says something and can extensively back it up, it's bullshit. When a right-wing man says something without backing it up, you'd better damn well believe it!
   
   If you find twenty studies on a topic and only three back your opinion, then quote only the three that agree with you, and don't mention that there are seventeen more that don't.
   
   And then teach religious mythology in punlic classrooms.
   
   ...Then define a "rapist" as everyone from the man who violently forces a woman to have sex (which everyone was thinking of when they answered the question) to some guy who simply asked a woman a second time after she's said, "No."
   
   ....and after that, does he violently force his dick into her cunt, or does he say "okay" and leave? Didn't you just bitch about leaving out crucial details?
   
   Mary Koss's study of rape on campus is a famous example. She asked women if they had ever had sex that they didn't want with a man who bought them drinks. It's not uncommon for people (not just women) to get drunk then do something that they later regret, so a lot of women answered yes.
