So my wife and I spoke with the director of the local art school here, and she agreed to rent her school out in August. So, if my wife and I can find enough students/participants (between 10-15?) we can put this plan into action. I don't know yet just how much it would cost. It really depends on how many people we can find who are interested. But I do know the idea is possible. there are plenty of inexpensive pensions and rooms to let here in town. for one month, no one would need a visa, just a passport. Food is inexpensive here, and finding models shouldn't be a problem. Nothing should be a problem if I can get students interested in coming.

My main task right now is to create a website, which I'm doing now, and to learn all the facts. If anyone is interested in coming here in August please let me know. There is plenty of nature to draw, paint, and photograph. The town is lovely. There will be good interior space to work in. I believe there is also access to a computer lab, although I don't know what's in it yet. I'm not sure yet if I would be acting as teacher or merely host - it depends on the skill level and interests of those who come. But, if anyone would like to focus a month of art on something specific, please let me know, and I'm sure I can plan a good experience for you.

Well, it's been a year and I couldn't keep my vow to submit an artwork to Spectrum. So, I'm repeating my new year's resolution to do this, before next fall. I want to make a large dragon, possibly watercolor, with detailed scales, a great face, and a barbed tail. We'll see.

It's finally snowing tonight! Tomorrow it'll be very nice out, so I'm going back to Slovak Paradise to take more photos. Hopefully I can get the car this time, because taking the bike today killed my legs and almost got me sick.

Hmmm, I guess I should reflect on this year too. Well, I had my first son. Woot! I also finished grad school. I didn't get a job teaching art anywhere, which sucks. It's also frustrating that I was at a level artistically where I was way above the average for public school teachers, and yet I'm still not good enough to teach anywhere more impressive, such as colleges or ateliers. It also sucks that I don't have time to make art anymore. But I have a job. My family's making more money than it spends, for the first time. And we moved to Europe, which is far superior to the states. I also got healthcare with my job, which is good. Whatever we're doing now, there's still plenty of time to come up with something better. And we're all healthy.

Everyone enjoy the new year!

Hey all. For those interested, I started a sketchbook thread on Conceptart.org. I did it mostly to get some more feedback on my work. Plus, it's always nice to meet new people and such. Mostly, it just has recent work I've already posted here, but there are some newer sketches that I plan to put into my anatomy tutorials, eventually. There are also things I consider too crappy to post here - digital doodles and such.

Alot of the work, (all of it?) is referenced from photos, but I'm always careful to give credit and links where they're due. You can see it all here:

So, some of you may have noticed that my membership was suspended, just after uploading my latest tutorial. It wasn't for the tutorial itself but some misunderstandings on how I promoted it. I don't want to dwell on this, I'm just glad it ended early, and I'm very thankful to the DA staff for hearing me out.

What happened was this. I had posted a popular tutorial on drawing hands. Many people had left comments asking for more tutorials and such. So, when I posted my new one, I sent little notes letting them know about it - BUT ONLY TO THOSE WHO HAD SHOWN GENUINE INTEREST IN MY TUTORIALS!
Not to random strangers. And, I didn't ask for fav's or comments, only serious feedback. If you inspect the comments of these tutorials, you will find that most of the people in question were very thankful for this. There were some people, possibly only one, I'm not sure, who simply forgot who I was, or resented the notes and decided I must be a spammer. One person in particular messaged me asking, "do I know you?" Only two days before, that artist had fav'd and commented favorably on my hand tutorial.

So I was labeled a spammer and suspended, up until I could get a kind admin to review the case and circumstances, and then I got it reversed early. I also promise never to send any notes again. So, if anyone wants to know about new work, you're supposed to watch me - although I'm not asking you to! Please no one ban me again!

So, that's what happened, I'm glad to be back, and I hope no one thinks less of me. There are some lessons to be gained from this:

1. Be careful not to assume the worst in people or jump to conclusions. You can really hurt decent people.

2. There are an infinite number of reasons to take offense in this world - the way someone looks at you, the way they dress, someone's tone of voice, their political views, religion, etc. Not every reason is valid. Yes spam is horrible, especially when the spammer only cares about himself or is trying to hurt you through computer viruses, or to take your money. That's spam. I was only trying to help people. That's why I made the tutorials in the first place.

Oh yeah, also, so during my exile from DA, I managed to find a great clip off youtube. For you music lovers, this one's great. It's a live concert by Ween, playing a cover by Led Zepellin - All of My Love. The video and sound quality is very good, so enjoy: [link]

It took me about eight months to get my first 500, and now just three for the next 500! All I can say is thank you all very much, and I'm very lucky to have found such a great place to meet artists and share work. I'm also working on a large figure drawing tutorial, so I might reach 1500 pretty soon too! Hopefully. It may sound shallow wanting favs, but I cling to that hope that if I get enough, maybe just maybe my art will be seen by someone who might offer me a job, or would show my work in a gallery. Who knows?

There are many people to thank here, and I'd like to give you all a proper feature. I can't here without a subscription, so in a little bit, I'll post a forum thread with all your best work, and I'll link it below. Certain special thanks are in order.

I must thank LouiseOdier (Susanna) for creating a wonderful club where I gained exposure and met some new great artists. She also gave me 37 fav's before going AWOL, taking them back, closing her club, and quiting the site. But still, her help is very much appreciated.

Thank you for giving me so many favorites, ChrissieCool (53), pishum (49), Luzblanca (31), and KTisIroppoiX10 (21)! I'm honored.

So, when I got to Slovakia I accepted a couple part time positions teaching ELL (English Language Learners). It was only about 20 hours a week, leaving plenty of time to spend with Andrew and to paint. The only downside was a small salary and no insurance, etc. A couple weeks back a new job opened up for ELL at a regular school, and so I took it. It starts this week, it'll add about another 20 hours? maybe? to my schedule, and that's just teaching. Correcting papers and planning lessons takes up more time meaning that I have no idea when I can make any art again. It sucks because I have all those supplies I want to dig into. I've been busy sketching figures for a big anatomy tutorial. Plus I have the Grand Canyon Tut to put together... There are endless art projects in my mind, but I think they're all going to have to wait. Hopefully my meager skills won't atrophy and I'll try to post at least something from time to time - I'm not leaving. But I think I'll be much more of a lurker from now on...

All my things from America have finally arrived, after a month or so on a boat - all my clothes, books, and art supplies. Now the question looms, what do I do first? I want to draw through all my anatomy books, eventually putting together a good tutorial here on deviant. I also need to finish a few more pastels to sell. Then, I need to start my main project which is a comic book, which is actually off to a dismal start. I'm unsure about my plot, my character designs, hell even the style of it all... It's all very daunting. I suppose I must start with some character concepts and build off that, although I also need to do some studies of fighting poses and stances. Time to draw off of Youtube...

My name is Thomas Arthur Smith, I go by Arthur, and I am an artist and educator living in Medford, MA. I'm working towards a Masters in Art Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, which I will finish this May. I am a skilled draftsman, specializing in landscapes and waterscapes in oil pastel. Currently I am teaching drawing and painting in an afterschool program at the New Art Center in Newton and ceramics in the evenings at the Red Brick Art Center in Beverly. I am currently working on skill based drawings and paintings to add to my portfolio, showing my knowledge of anatomy, painting & underpainting techniques, figure sculpture, and ceramics. Expect many and frequent updates. I am also writing lesson plans for teaching, and I am always on the lookout for a really good lesson idea. If you're an art student or teacher, and you know a lesson that really works, in any medium, please send me a note. Also, if you're a gallery owner, or someone interested in showing my work, buying my work, requesting a commision/portrait, or looking for an art educator, please email me anytime, at the address listed below.
