I wanted to do an update regarding stock photography. I am not sure how many of my watchers use stock photos in their work, but I have a proposition for those of you who do.

As many of you know, last year I spent a month in Europe photographing my heart out- some models, but mostly architecture and fine landscapes. I came back with over 3,500 RAW images but have barely had any time to work on any of them. In fact, I think that I might have gotten to maybe 15-20 seriously. It's a shame to let some of this work go to waste because I am not sure when and where I will have time to get to many of these projects with my schedule. I'm almost afraid they'll get lost in time and the archives of my ever expanding hard drive collection (over 8TB in work - only 1-5% worked on)...

Soooo.. my proposition is as follows - I'd like to offer some of my untouched raw work up as stock photos for some of you to mess around with - to see what you can do with it. This is something that I have mixed feeling about - sending my babies out into the world to be cared for by others, at the same time, curious and excited to see what some of you amazing artists can with in collaboration.. I'd like some opinions. If I do this - it will be with my non-model work for starters.

What do you all think? Any interest?

The obligatory end of one year, beginning of new statement.

I suppose I should be getting on the ‘writing one of these’ wagon, seeing as so many people are. I don’t recall ever writing one before, what with my terrible memory and all, but if I haven’t, then this year I have good reason to. It’s been eventful to say the least.

I think this is the most I’ve ever talked about myself anywhere.

First and foremost, I took a shot at being self destructive; over partying, over flirting, over indulging. I think my intent was to try and accelerate something in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t trying to harm myself. I’ve just spent a lot of years in a cage that I’ve been trying to escape from and I had some catching up to do. I don’t really know if I was successful, but I’m pretty sure I looked really cool doing it.

It’s been 1 year and 7 months since I quit smoking cold turkey. I don’t really feel any health benefits, but I smell better. The money I saved went to pay for rising gas prices.

Living life in Winnipeg can easily be compared to the EKG readout of your average rotting cadaver. The city as a whole as a black hole. It’s corrupt, economically declining, dead end, and cold. You can see the frustration in the faces of people here. There is a lot of pent up anger and jealousy in the same way that 2 rats in a cage will fight over a single scrap of food. It’s not their fault, it’s about survival. It’s nearly impossible to run a successful business in Winnipeg. Those who live here are finding themselves sinking deeper in the metaphoric quicksand.

So this brings me to my first subject of travel. I have been lucky enough to escape this city several times this year. My adventure began in London, to visit some cousins that I didn’t even know existed until recently. I was able to stay with my family there and I promptly set up home base for my Euro-Trip.

While in London, I met David and his wife Karin. Two amazing people who welcomed me into their lives like an old friend. They took me to Windsor, Oxford, and central London, and best of all to Platform 9 and ¾. They graciously had me over for dinner several times. I’ll never forget their generosity. Also in London, I met and worked with gorgeous Janine Holmes; we shot in a park where she changed outfits while barely hiding behind tiny bushes and got whistled at by nearby construction workers. I had her hanging on trees and posing on branches. During one of our sets, a tiny puppy promptly peed on her pile of clothes. It was funny.

My Cousin, Tahir, and his friend Anks decided to take me out for a weekend of partying in Birmingham. On the way back we stopped off at a pub, in Anks’ home town, and had a proper Sunday roast (I miss that) and a Liverpool game. I was now addicted to soccer and pub food.

My next stop was in Dublin, Ireland, where I had Guinness Stout and Seafood chowder for breakfast! This is where I met Amy MacMahon and Kim Bale. Amy and I shot from day till night all over Trinity College. She’s a sexy sweetheart with a dark side. The next day she gave me a small tour of an industrial shore where we stepped on a lot of barnacles and later that night took me out to a pub drinking with her Irish mates and I promptly tried to start a soccer fight (Go Liverpool!). Now I know that “amn’t” is a word (contraction for ‘am not’ ). I’m sitting here in mortification that my MS Word would even consider underlining it in red as though it was a common spelling error.

I met Kim on the morning I was leaving. This brave hottie showed up at our meeting place wearing a trench coat, fishnet stocking and a very short skirt that doubled as an elastic band. I was wearing 2 shirts, a sweater and jacket and still freezing. We shot at Merrion Square Park, where she was promptly kicked off of a pedestal that I put her on. We also took a photo of her near a sleeping construction worker. After the shoot she invited me to a pub and 5 pints each later, I promptly missed my plane back to London. Her company was worth it. Now I know my tummy is capable to transporting at least 2.5 liters of beer.

Then I was off to Venice, Italy. I wonder if the Italians have a word for ‘asshole.’ Because that’s the word I’d have used the most during my visit in Venice. I don’t want to get into much detail, but I will say that my time out there was spent with my mouth shut and camera out. The 99 cent bottles of wine and 62 cent bottles of Peroni kept me in check.

Berlin. Wow. This was the last place I would visit in Europe before I’d head back to London to prepare for my sad flight home, but one of the most memorable. As my journey was ending, it was just beginning for my friends Janna and Ashley. My high school friend Jon, was now living in Berlin, generously took the time to show us around, when he could. During the day, the history was...

Well.. It finally happend. My trusty Canon 20D bit the bucket. In the middle of an event shoot my camera shot into Err 99, then the shutter went CRAZY and kept snapping on its own - repeatedly.

The display went blank, and even with the power OFF the shutter keeps snapping. The only ways to stop it is to remove the battery. The second the battery makes contact by even slightly inserting it into the compartment (with or without grip - cf card door open - battery door open) the shutter starts to go nuts. I will be taking it into the shop for possible repairs or a burial on Tuesday.

The Moral: Ladies and Gents- ALWAYS have a backup.

The Dilemma: Get a 40D now? OR wait for the imminent 7D/5D Mk2 with no release date in sight. the 5D is out of the question. Aside from the full frame, its is archaic even compared to the 40D.

In the mean time, its time to dust off my ole 10D and use that for this weeks shoots.

DeviantArt Censors Sexist? Or just our betters?

Many of you know that recently I posted 2 mature photos on my DA page.

One was a Penis and one is a Vagina. Both very similar in the why they were shot. Both had identical tags and exactly the same comments, each with a link to the other image.

Today I received this from DA:
“The work(s) listed below have been removed by staff due to a violation of deviantART policy or because its theme or content was judged unacceptable. Your deviantART submissions must obey certain guidelines and restrictions.”

The photo of the penis was removed by deviantArt censors. The vagina photo was allowed to remain.

Why is a penis any more offensive than a vagina? Why is it more offensive than the dozens of other penis photos uploaded to DA everyday? Was the censor merely abusing his/her power for their own personal taste? Or are DA censors now our betters, thus presuming to tell us how we should perceive and create art or how to find beauty in nature?

My photo was represented in a manner in which I felt was to represent my message artistically to my own tastes.

Each photo was an inverse of the other, expressing pride in what we came here with. With these photos and their descriptions, it’s obvious how I ridicule how we illogically hate, shame, fear, oppress, hide, destroy the beauty of our natural selves for no purpose other than to appease close minded minority. Yet we take pride in so much that is morally wrong. The usual suspects: War, social violence, misconstruing our research on useless luxuries. If ‘Sly Stallone’ can kill 250 people in 5 minutes on the big screen; “We’ll make it a video game and market it to our kids.. Just make sure there isn’t a boob in there somewhere.”

Can you build a house, love it and hate the tools it was made with? These are the very tools to create life, to spawn love, attraction, bliss, anticipation.. the most beautiful and inspiring emotions. The same emotions that we adore to be shown by others.

I won’t go into a big Freudian speech here – because I believe that most of you already understand what I mean; the history of mankind starts and ends with the penis and vagina.

My inspiration to post these photos was to counter a letter of venom and hatred towards a fellow photographer ( [link] ). I fight fire with my art as any good artist does. All that hatred and contempt succeeded in doing was spawning more forbidden beauty. For every act of hate, comes 2 more to defy such ignorance.

‘Take away my only means to fight, then sooner will I die in battle against those who would destroy our freedoms.’ Today, deviantArt took that away from me. Today, deviantArt fought for the enemy.

So..
Here they are (penis photo is being hosted elsewhere). You tell me. Did DA do the right thing, or is this simply a matter of power abuse?

Penis: [link]
Click on the file named “dacensored.jpg” (I will not post a direct link to the image in case that is also not allowed)
and
Vagina: [link]

I can only assume that the censors now remove the photo of the vagina to save face as an act of defiance? Or will they do the right thing and bring its inverse back?

Before today, I thought of DeviantArt as an outlet for artists and expression. Today onward it’s just another website that caters to the close minded. I have a feeling that after this, I may be banned from DA (for further exercising my right to expression and free speech). If that’s the case, they don’t deserve to have me here.

-Rahim.

Ps. interestingly enough, the very same photo that was removed by the DA censors was a feature exhibit at a local art gallery – where the curator deemed it appropriate. The numbered print was later purchased by a collector.

EuroTrip

Hi all. I am planning another trip to London / Paris and then hopefully Kenya Africa for a 'whatever' amount of time... I will be leaving on standby in February hopefully..

If anyone is interested in collaborating, please let me know. I have airfair saved up, but will be spending most of my time living out of my backpack. So I'll be the scruffy looking brown Canadian you see rooting through garbage for scraps of food.. stop by and say 'hi'

Thank you all

Just over a year a go, I created a deviant art page by accident, so I could view other artists work. I didn't realize that I'd be required to my work post too. I mean after every time I have a new image, I have to go and update all the other million pages I keep it on. However, deviant art has somehow grown on me more than the others...

So aqain, I wanted to thank everyone for their comments and favorites... I appreciate all of your support.

I finally got my Spyder2 Montior calibration System in the mail yesterday (took long enough) and spent many hours last night calibrating my editing machine and my laptop screen. Big difference.. So much so that I have noticed some colour flaws (assuming the Colourometer itself is not flawed) in small groups of my work. Over the next few weeks I will be colour-correcting and replacing much of those images. What a difference.
