The MN@ Volunteer Experience (Part 2)

I spoke in the last blog about the MN@ Volunteer Experience and how it should be viewed as a natural cycle with a beginning and an end. This time we're going to focus on my direction for the team and what I look for in new volunteers.

What do you think about when you hear the term "MN@ Volunteer"? Do you automatically think "Oh, they enforce rules on the chat network and forums?" - if so, then you do not really have a clear understanding of what the experience is meant to be.

While moderating #devart and the forums (for example) is certainly an aspect of what volunteers can do, it is far from what I consider to be the most important - and lately I've been trying to take steps to make that more apparent. You may have noticed regular monthly featured chats recently? Or perhaps the monthly Forum Features that the MN@ have cooked up for you?

What I've been trying to do with the MN@ Volunteer experience is to move it towards an air of education and community involvement rather than focusing on "moderation". I believe that a volunteer's experience should be more about organizing and participating in community events, challenging the community, educating, and generally helping the community make dAmn and the forums a better, more involved, and worthwhile venue for their endeavours.

For example, have you ever wanted to hold a featured chat event in your chatroom but didn't know how to go about it? Well, what if the MN@ got together and provided all the info you needed to do that? What if you could ask them questions and they helped you along the way? Wouldn't that be cool? It's not only cool, it's actually something that's being worked on by a couple of awesome MN@ Volunteers!

That is the type of community involvement and education opportunities that I see MN@ focusing on. It's also very telling of what kind of qualities I really look for when scoping the community for new MN@ Volunteers. I'm less interested in how good you "enforce rules" and more interested in what you have to bring to this framework of "education and involvment".

The "TEAM" in MN@ Volunteer Team:
- Together we are more than the sum of our parts.
- To be truly effective and awesome, we must always work as a team. We strive to give honest and effective input and ideas. We discuss and communicate our ideas to better the community. We SUPPORT each others ideas and projects with the excitement and commitment we'd want others to give ours.
- You cannot be an effective MN@ Volunteer in a vacuum - if you never give feedback, never help others with their ideas, never feel like communicating your own ideas, never feel like supporting other MN@'s projects, then the MN@ Team is not for you.

Are you knowledgable and outgoing in the area of dAmn you are interested in:

a) if you are interested mostly in the forums, do you actually live and breath in the forums and know them inside and out? Do you have your pulse on the forum community? Do you know what a counter-thread is? Do you regularity browse more than one specific forum?

b) If you are interested in the chat network, have you run your own successful chatroom? Have you helped run your own chat events? Are you knowledgable about the chat network?

Do you take yourself seriously? (Then you probably won't fit in)

Are you able to get along with others easily?

Are you a team player?

Do you have the time to commit to volunteering? (Be honest with yourself!)

Are you are brimming with ideas that fit into the "education and involvment" framework, can think outside the box, and have the drive and commitment to see your ideas through to the end?

The MN@ Volunteer Experience

I posted this on the #MN-Volunteer's Blog, but for the benefit of the people who do not +watch that yet (and you know who you are ), I'll re-post it in my personal blog...

The MN@ Volunteer experience strives to bring rewards both to the volunteer and the community at large. Volunteering for deviantART isn't really any different than any other type of volunteering situation - it's a two-way street. A specific volunteer brings their own skills and advantages to the MN@ Team, and in turn, the volunteer learns new skills and knowledge that they can then apply to other situations outside the volunteer space. In other words, it's important that volunteers have as much to bring to the experience as they hope to gain from it.

The MN@ Volunteer experience is meant to be a cycle and shouldn't be viewed as being static. My entire approach to managing the MN@ volunteer experience is based upon the underlying aim of creating a fun, rewarding, educating, and exciting experience that they can ultimately take back with them both to the dA community and their personal lives.

I regularly review the MN@ Team with the aim of keeping it in a constant state of flux - bringing aboard new fresh volunteers and transitioning existing volunteers back into the community. There is no defined volunteer period for a specific individual - one MN@ may move on after only 3 months on the team, or another may stay on much longer - this is in no way a reflection of their individual volunteer abilities, and is instead simply a natural part of the cyclical nature of the volunteer experience.

When I let an MN@ know that it is their time to transition back into the community, it shouldn't be a shock to them - they should know that it is only a natural part of the experience, and that they now have this opportunity to bring what they have learned back into the community. Not only that, but they leave knowing that they will open up space for a new volunteer who will be given their own chance to experience volunteering here at deviantART.

So, next time you hear of an MN@ Volunteer who has lost their "@", instead of being disrespectful and asking "OMG WHY DID YOU GET KICKED OFF THE TEAM?!", why not simply drop by their page and respectfully thank them for all that they have contributed? Know that they are simply fulfilling the cycle of the MN@ Volunteer experience and pat them on the back for it.

#help Meet & Greet!

$chix0r announced on Monday in the #CommunityOps Blog some potential changes coming to customer service and how we utilize the #help chatroom on dAmn. If you haven't read it yet please check it out - I'm really excited about it myself.

To kick off these events, we're going to hold a meet & greet TODAY at 1pm PST (in about 2.5 hours) in #help.

The event will last for 2 hours and there will be various Community Operations staff dropping in throughout the event to take questions and offer you the chance to provide feedback regarding what you'd like to see happening in these events.

Please note, due to the nature of the first event being a general meet & greet session, we will not be taking any questions that would involve the exchange of personal, or financial details. Please don't ask us why your friend got banned -- we can't tell you!

#QuillCafe is a chatroom created by *cinnamon-quill to accompany the many writers left homeless after last year's International Novel Writing Month ended, and the #NaNoWriMo chatroom here on dA closed. A few months later, after ~~we developed a thirst for total world domination~~ our chatroom's moderate success, #quill-cafe was formed. With an emphasis on prompt writing and a focus on all kinds of prose and poetry, #quill-cafe is the perfect place for making friends, networking, getting inspiration, and showcasing the best of the best literature on deviantArt. As long as you consider yourself a writer of fiction you'll be welcomed here, whether writing is a passion for you or just a hobby.

I founded this group, and it thrives on the help and support of the fantastic members and of course, my partner in crime, @Little-Vampire!

This group originally started out as a different group with a different name, but after a series of unfortunate events, it had to be removed, so was started again to become #Devious-Jewellery!
It's lost a lot of members in the move, but I hope that some new recruits will show their creative passion and add to the group

The group serves as a multifunctional platform for devious jewellers, mainly keyed on sharing the wonderful jewellery the members create, but #Devious-Jewellery also accepts artisan crafts from our more diverse members. I also aim for the group to be a mini crafting community that can share tips, tricks and tutorials on jewellery, so that even deviants just starting out with jewellery can get advice and step-by-step guides on making their own jewellery.
The groups 'favourites' section also serves as a great place to find wonderful jewellery and helpful resources.

The previous group offered an advertisment station blog where all members can pimp their jewellery and crafts stores. This blog will soon be returning with the chance for new members to share their jewellery and craft shops with other members of deviantART.
Although the group is not a super-group, there are plans for it to become one in the future, and until that happens, our members work will be featured and shared in journals and news articles.

Reaper-X - Who is taking over my journal for Monday.

Hello everyone on deviantART! I hope you are all doing well.

I would like to take this time right now to thank $Tachy-on for allowing me the opportunity to use his Journal as a platform for my intentions and expressions. I appreciate this opportunity and I assure you and $Tachy-on that this will not go to waste. :3 This journal will be a rather large one, as I have a lot to say, not only about myself, but about my group and our affiliates as well as some notable artists I've come to like through my 6 years of deviousness.

This has also given me the opportunity to debut my new CSS, featuring artwork by Laurent Libessart, an artist mentioned further in the blog. I hope by reading this, you will be able to take something valuable from it.

Starting off, I would like to tell you about my group, #DACipher. dACipher is a tutorial group founded founded on Jun 7, 2009. Our style is considerably different from other groups because we are not simply a "TutorialHaus" . We do keep tutorials, but we also seek to bring notable experts of various forms of media to those who want to advance their skills. Another thing that allows us to stand out is the amount of philosophy backing the concept behind our work. Our philosophy is rooted in our namesake, the word "Cipher". A cipher symbolizes anything that is a a circle, be it the letter "O" or the number "0". It also symbolizes 360 degrees: 120 degrees of Knowledge, 120 degrees of Wisdom and 120 degrees of understanding. These things altogether represent completion and we seek to incorporate that into everything we do.

#DACipher will feature adjusting lessons as opposed to straight up tutorials. Each with a sort of assignment to encourage an artist to bring something to the table with a goal in mind. The reason we have these optional assignments is because some artists can get distracted and slow down their creative process without a goal to achieve. These lessons also allow for a closer dialogue between members, heads and contributors.
To bridge the gap even more, we've also started a chatroom for the group. Here we will host events and generally allow members to keep in touch with heads and contributors. It will also provide a platform for members to network with one another, allowing a sort of 'viral positivity' in the vein of the old African proverb "Each One, Teach One." Providing all of these things will help encourage positive growth and stronger commitment within deviantART. Essentially, this is the greatest goal of all within dACipher; feeding the community with something to grow on.

We consider these groups to be crew-mates in the movement and invaluable assets to our growing community. What they bring to dACipher as affiliates helps us continue to progress further in our goal to bring positivity and growth to the community at large. Thanks to their diverse qualities and and concepts, our relationships are not simply button-press friend requests, but an established support system within a circle that encapsulates all of us. I for one, am thankful for their desire to make big things happen, not only with themselves, but with dACipher as well.

The artists here are featured not just because they're skilled in some form or fashion...
