Unfortunately the comic is currently at a bit of a stand still, because both of the creators are too busy. However, we're still thinking about it; we've just got personal lives to attend to. In any case, checkout this awesome picture that made us!



Yeah it is at a standstill... hopefully it won't remain that way, though! I just have to make it through the next two months and then I'll be out for the summer!
Next year we'll be living closer together than ever, but, well... to be honest I dunno if we're going to have time even then.

Well guys, I've gotten out of university for the year and I wish I could say I'm home free for a few months but I'm not. Unfortunately for Canidae I'm a little too busy with my own series Rimer (Rimer comes first with me) to work on it much right now. I'm attempting to get a job so I can publish the first book in my series, Ashes of Hope. (As well as keep out of the hole as much as I can.) If you haven't already, checkout the practice comic we're doing The Prayer Fulfilled. Also, if you like any of the art in this gallery, I'm in a bit of a financial pinch and I'm offering commissions ranging from $5-30 CAD. Hope everyone is having a good day!

Other than that... I've been too freaking busy to do art, but I have applied to University and have sent my funding grant application to my first nations band which if I get means four years of schooling without worrying about it! Anyway, I hope to do art asap but I'm just too busy right now.



Ughh not much to report, except I've been researching all kinds of techniques for the comic and I'm starting to get a clear picture of how it will be made. Also, I made a new promo image, so take a peek at that. It's available in the store. There should be more character sheets up soon. I hope to try to get a wacom cintiq before I begin Canidae, but that is, of course, a long shot. Publishing certion manuscripts are far more important.

As the title says, Happy Holidays everyone and sorry for the hiatus! Rosanna was very busy with university and couldn't spare any time. The project is still going well and we've got lots of new ideas for the story. Aleria has been working on a character we've named Stella and Rosanna is trying to get at least two character sheets out this holiday. (With one completed!) So, we'd like to thank everyone for their continued patronage and everyone who has watched us - it means a bunch. Our 2010 start is beginning to look a lot closer now.

We'd also like to announce our new store at zazzle. [link] It's quite cool already and more stuff is being added.



Wow, this Beta testing junk is weird. I think it might be crashing my browser, though that might be the other site I was on... anyway, I've been busy also. I'm co-hosting a dance in January, so a lot of my focus has been on that. However, I am working on a design for Stella, so hopefully that'll be up soon. You guys don't know this, but I've actually done a bit of concept art before. I just don't post it - it's usually for our eyes only. ('cause it's so bad )But as my Lieutenant has asked me to, I'm doing a full colour picture of Stella and I will be posting it. Sometime in the future. Until then: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."


So sorry I've been so busy guys. I finally finished all the prize art for the contest and so now I can stop thinking about that for a while. I dunno when our next contest will be, but it'll likely be a while, because university keeps me very busy and eats up up my free time. I've been working on a lot of designs and this year I hope to do a lot of concept art for the comic. (And not just of the animal characters - I want to make it clear that this is not a wolf comic - a wolf just happens to be the main character.) Anyway, I'm hoping for some cold weather to kill off the pine beetles that are plaguing the western half of my country, so think cold! (Even though cold is icky. )

Aleria discovered this while Rosanna was at her house this past thanksgiving weekend. This is a very big issue and since it relates to the wolves in our comic, we want to help their real life brethren by posting it. Unfortunately we can't sign the petition because we're Canadian, but you probably can. (Seeing as most people on dA are Americans.)

*Yawn* we must be sharing brainwaves (like always) 'cause I'm also extremely tired. And sick. Frick, can life not give me any rest? Anyway, complaining aside, it's not really so bad... there're bad things and there're good things about this life, and we all just kind of have to live with them.
I've been having that dream-sort of feeling lately, ye know, the kind where the world in your dreams and imagination feel more real than "reality"? Anyway, it's a very odd feeling, and when coupled with tiredness and sickness, makes one feel like doing absolutely nothing..
As always, I leave off with a quote. Why? Because they make one think, and I like things that make one think.

Rosanna has some notions and concept art for the story, she just hasn't had access to a scanner to post any. In other news, Canidae is getting a blog on blogger. (It's our cheap precurser to a website.) That will probably be up for the next time we post a journal. Aleria has also been thinking on the outfits for Kai and Kylarra, two of our starring human roles, which means in a few months maybe we'll be able to have some more human character sheets. As soon as Rosanna finishes the prize art, she is making the first human character sheet, which will be of Sierra. Mossheel, Greyclaw, Trigger, Amoroq, Jarosh-as-cougar & ethiopian wolf, Sierra-as-cheetah, Sol and the rest of the sled dogs are all slated for character sheets. Yay.



I'm also quite busy, between school and cooking supper for my family every night as well as cleaning up some nights (I'm actually in the middle of doing dishes right now. *shhh*). However, I am getting back into an artsy mood, so perhaps you guys will finally see some concept art from me! Don't expect it to look anything like Rosy's though, my art pales in comparison to hers - but it'll let you see some of the human designs I've been working on. Kylarra and Kai, two of our characters we carried over from a forum rp that died are going to be immortalized soon - I won 's kiriban, and that's what I'm requesting. I'll be sure to post a link when it's done Other than that, a bit of personal news - school here's not harder, it's easier because it's fun! How much easier? I'm currently getting 100% in Law 12. I know, crazy, right? Anyway, enough bragging. More visits this weekend, but first Rosy has to endure a torturous ride from North Van to Mission with my stepdad. Will she make it? Will she have an anxiety attack from the awkward silence or interrogation-style questioning? We'll let you know next time! Anyway, better go finish the dishes, so I'll leave off with a quote from my English Lit teacher's board of random daily stuff:

Weeee life is fun as an animation student! I'm working on all sorts of stuff and in design class I worked on finalizing designs for Sierra and Tayne Lyarven, two of our most important humans. Sorry the prizes are coming along so slow, being an animation student is really hectic and I don't have much time for personal projects. Often I come home late and just wanna sleep, but I've found a way to do personal projects at school, so expect the prize art to be underway and hopefully all complete by the end of October. (I hope.) I'm also working hard on our practice graphic short novel 'The Prayer Fulfilled' so if you're watching my other account, you'll see the first page up fairly soon. Anyway, I have lotsa concept art for you guys; maybe with Aleria's scanner I'll have it up this weekend or next week! (I'm going to her house this weekend. ) I also have ideas for the climax - weeee!

We both live on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada now; a mere hour and a half away from each other. This means we'll see each other more often, which likely means more story development and whatnot shall take place. Yay!




M'yes, we are! I'm totally loving my school (though I had a rather scary incident in the city just a few days ago, but overall Mission is nice. I've been kinda on an off-art kick, so don't expect to see any concept art from me any time soon. (wait, have I even ever uploaded any? Lol.) Anyway, life's pretty good, though awfully busy. I'm doing lots of clothing research though, it's relaxing! I really hope I get to go to Falcolf's, so hopefully it works out. Ja ne, minna-san!



Well, I'm now a resident of North Vancouver, Canada and I've been studying at Capilano University's commercial animation program. It's fun! I'm really happy here, especially since I can play in the animation lab on the Wacom Cintiq moniters whenever I want practically! What are cintiqs? ONLY THE BEST ART TECHNOLOGY ON EARTH, THAT'S WHAT! Cintiqs are monitors where the screens are like a tablet and you use a stylus with them - which in plain talk means you can draw right on the bloody monitor like it's your sketchbook. It's fricking AWESOME. I love these things, you can zoom in to psd.s uber close in photoshop, which of course exposes all your icky lil' errors but who gives a poop because the end result is twices as awesome as anything you could get out of a normal monitor 'cus you can be more detailed. Makes my poor dear Lappy286 look like a piece of feces. These things are worth like $2000 and I get to play on 'em whenever! Squeeee! Anyyyyway. Being in animation class also means that I'm really busy. Usually by the time I get home (6-7 pm) I'm too tired to do much art or writing. But I WILL get to everything. I've decided to do all my Rimer art (dunno what Rimer is? checkout my other dA account ) at school and I'll do Canidae art at home. Let's hope the method works. Hopefully Aleria is coming over this weekend! Then I get to show her this bad ass new home of mine. I love living here.

The judging worked by Rosanna picking the entries that looked the most like wolves marking wise, then sending her list with her opinions to Aleria. Aleria picked the ones that she liked best and thought represented the goal of the contest. Nightstar came in first because not only did this wolf have very wolf-ish markings, but the design was very original. Wolves often have light silvery markings on their backs, as well as dark markings on their sides and tail tips. They also often have markings that only make it half way down their necks, as Nightstar does. Snowfall captured second by the beautiful realism of his design and the lovely tones of grey in his white pelt and his nice dark tail tip. Reedsnap was the valiant winner of third place for her great design as well as her neat story.

The winners will be contacted via note. These results will also be posted at as well as in our shoutboard here.

Today's News

Reminder: Contest ends July 30th! The more entries the better guys!! (That's in 9 days!!) See journal contest page for details.

Well, we're both pretty transient right now. Aleria is living with family on the coast for the summer and Rosanna is roasting her rear off at her family's new house. Rosanna has been working on character sheets rather randomly, probably because currently she has the artistic oomph of a cushion. (You can tell which one of us is writing this journal, can't you?) In a few weeks Rosanna (*cough*me*cough*) will be moving to North Vancouver, to study commercial animation at Capilano University. Rosanna's current assignment is to make nice character sheets and design all the animal characters for the novel, while Aleria is involved in figuring out the clothes for the humans. Rosanna probably won't start posting human final designs for a while, because she believes she'll be much better at them after she's trained up and doesn't want to have to look at crappy art on the character sheets. Besides Canidae both of us have a lot of other projects running, including Aleria's awesome story 'Darkness and Light' and Rosy's usual horde of Rimer manuscripts.

Rosanna can't wait to live on the coast. She's sick of being so warm and icky feeling all the time from roasting in her house. However, she has learned that watching copious amounts of Bleach is good for Canidae, because it makes her want to draw character sheets!

Note to Aleria: Did you say last time we met up that you didn't put all of Sandstorm's markings on her? It would be cool if you could update your character sheet of her if so, so I could make an officialized version. -Rosanna

Today's News

We'd like to announce that Aleria's entry into the contest, 'Sandstorm' has been withdrawn. This is because Rosanna went and started subconciously blending the character into the story, so to keep it fair for everyone else Sandstorm has been scratched. (Bad Rosy!) Sandstorm is, however, an official secondary character in Canidae now and will appear in the story as Greyclaw's littermate sister.

To everyone else with entries - keep 'em up! We love seeing them and the more entries, the better! Contest ends July 30th 2008 remember!!

We also came up some great ideas for the story while Aleria was visiting Rosanna for her graduation. More plot development is good!!

Today's News

So this weekend I get to go down to Golden, British Columbia, Canada's Northern Lights Wildlife Centre to spend two hours walking with a pair of very real (though tame) wolves and their handlers! I'll be taking loads of photographs and posting them all right here! Besides that, I also plan on writing up a newspaper style report, detailing every minute of the experiance. I've never seen a wolf in my entire life, even in a zoo (but of course in photos and whatnot) so this is really exciting for me. Wolves play such a huge part in not just Canidae, but in my in-progress Rimer novel series as well. (Though the wolves on Rimer are quite different and not quite like the more realistic ones in Canidae of course!) I'm really excited about going to Golden and hiking with the animal that has inspired me almost from the starting block of my life. I didn't start liking wolves when Balto came out, but liked them long before. My favourite subject matter has always been wolves. I mainly started loving them when I was a little kid, likely less than 3 years old, watching a cartoon called White Fang which was based off of Jack London's book of the same title. The cartoon was probably the first thing that ever alerted me to the presence of wolves in the world, since before that I was probably only concerned with dogs, cats and horses - stuff I saw around town. Ever since, I've been in love with the species that is the wolf, specifically the subspecies Canis lupus columbianus which is what the 'north wolves' in Canidae are based off of. C. lupus columbianus is the main wolf subspecies in my homeland - British Columbia, Canada. Supposedly they are one of the larger subspecies.

So anyway, pictures + report (and likely a lot of sketches) coming soon!

First some FAQ.

What's a cameo?: A cameo is a special appearance of a character in a type of media.

If my original character gets a cameo, do you own it? Absolutely NOT. You designed it, NOT me and full credit for the design/ownership will be given to you!

How can I get a cameo? Through winning a contest or buying one, or by one of the production staff of Canidae gifting one to you.

Why are they so expensive? Because I'm going to be drawing your character zillions of times over in the comic and they come with a character sheet, that's why.

Any other questions? Comment below!

For Canidae we're planning on offering two types of cameo; animal and spiriki. Because Spiriki usually have at least two different forms, they are, of course, more expensive. The funds from cameos will go into the publication fund. If you don't have a character but want a cameo, we can design one for you. Cameos come with nice character sheets. (Though not turn arounds, those take too much work!)

Canine** Character: $30 CDN
Spiriki* Character (Transforms into ONE Animal): $50 CDN

*Spiriki are humans who can shape shift into animals. For cameos, I'm only allowing them to have one animal form.

**Canine may be any northern species or dog.

Contest is now open!

Contest Ends: July 30th 2008

1st Prize: 1 digital picture with full background and up to two characters, a nice original character sheet of the winning character and a cameo appearance of the character in Canidae.

2nd Prize: Character sheet & a digital avatar

3rd Prize: Digital avatar

Goal: Basically the idea of this contest is to design a character for Canidae, to appear as a cameo member of Tailchaser's birth pack.

Judging: Will be done by Rosanna Brost, head of animalian character design & the story of Canidae. Entries will be judged upon how well the character applies to the specifications of the contest as well as how well they would fit into the styling of the graphic novel. This is not a contest to see how well you can draw; but rather, how well you can design markings on a wolf. If you cannot draw but want to enter, there is free line art here: [link]

Rules & Regulations:
-Please, no psychedelic wolves (no funky colours); Canidae has a semi-realistic styling and the entry's markings & colours should reflect this.
-No tattoos or ornaments. These are wild wolves that have never known humans, so these items would be highly improbable.
-No wolf dogs. The pack is too remote to have them!
-No funky bright eye colours like purple or pink. Keep the colours realistic! If real wolves don't have a colour, don't use it!!
-Wolves are NOT huskies. Please refrain from making husky-ish looking designs.

Today's News

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a sort of 'design a wolf' contest. I'd post some lineart first of course, so that people who aren't as good at drawing wolves could still enter. The prize would be a digital picture of any one or two of your characters with a nice bg and I would make a nice, original ref (not a sketchy one like what I make for most of my characters) of the character designed by the winner. As well as that, the character would appear in Canidae as one of the wolves in Tailchaser's pack in the graphic novel.

However, there would be guidelines to this contest.
-The wolf character's colours/markings would have to be natural. No pure brown wolves, as they don't actually exist in nature. If you want a character to be mostly brown, that's okay, but they have to have a shot of grey somewhere in their pelts.
-No black wolves would be allowed as there's already loads in the pack. *sorry*
-White, silver, cinnamon, tan & grey, brown & grey and grey wolves would be the colourations allowed. It would be good if people referenced the markings to photos, or said where they go the idea for them.
-Absolutely NO wolf dogs. Tailchaser's pack is too remote to allow for them!
-Names cannot include words that are things wolves wouldn't know about. This means no use of metallic words like silver, copper or gold and no use of human stuff like spears. I'd also request that people stay away from picking names that Kay Fedewa has used. Wolves can have nicknames that are completely unrelated to their actual names, such as how Tailchaser is called 'Bria' by the dogs in Canidae. Today's News

Okay, some of you guys may know how finicky I am about critique, if you've watched me on my other account, so here's the drill. Please do not give critique if it says it isn't desired. Now, some people might wonder why I put the 'no critique' thing up. Here's my reasons:

A. I already know about 90% of the flaws, I don't want people telling me about them 1000 times.

B. Usually the deviations I put as 'critique not desired' are finished. This means critique on them is utterly and absolutely pointless, because I'm not going to revisit the deviation, at least anytime soon.

C. Many times the stuff I put as 'critique not desired' are stuff I'm completely happy with, despite the flaws. It's gotten my 'it'll do' mental seal of approval. This doesn't mean it's flawless, because nothing is perfect, it just means basically that I don't want to think about it anymore.

When I do art, I almost never go back and fix a deviation, unless there's only a few minor things wrong. In this sense, as said up above, critique is rather pointless. Over the years I've developed a method of ruthlessly critiquing my own art, finding stuff I hate about it, then trying to improve on them for next time by making little mental notes. I'll say to myself "I don't like the ears on that one" or "I should of added something to connect the lake to the shore more, looks like the land is just floating on top."

However, there are plenty of deviations in this gallery where I haven't asked people to disdain critique. These are stuff like colour concepts and sketches. Many of these I'm not happy at all with, and I'd welcome some feedback on ways of making them better (this means critique like 'you could make the feet on that look better by...' or 'his eyes look a little pale, I know it's natural, but maybe for the sake of the comic you should make them look a tad brighter so he stands out more!' or 'harness... ]]> =Tailchaser-Bria http://Tailchaser-Bria.deviantart.com/journal/18165725/ http://Tailchaser-Bria.deviantart.com/journal/18165725/ Sun, 04 May 2008 13:46:29 PDT tentatively called 'Canidae.' Today's News

Well, some major plot development has been in the works lately. As some of you may know, a lot of Canidae's story came from a dream I had a few years back. (In fact, I get quite a few 'story dreams' but this is the one that really sunk into me the deepest.) However, the original storyline from the dream, while epic, didn't seem exciting enough to me. So, putting on my thinking cap, lately I've embarked on the seriously fun (and sometimes aggravating) task of trying to make the plot deeper, more diverse and intricate. (Not to mention more exciting.) If you look through my character sheet listings, you might see a few more names in the characters now. This is because I've finally found reasons for certain plot elements.

Sadly, I can't tell you guys about the details of the original dream I had, other than it was fairly fully formed and that I was a wolf in it - our main character, Tailchaser. (Red was also there.)

When I finally do start making the comic, I'd like to warn you guys that this is going to be a long story and while Aleria will be helping me with it, it's still gonna take forever, because at the same time that I'll be creating Canidae, I'll also be continuing to write my novel series and working at the wolf movie. My goal for the comic is to get one page out a month at least. I think that'll work alright, because I'll be putting a lot of effort into each frame and each page will take some significant planning.

Well, I have to go now. I have an animation to finish today....

Guess what guys? My best friend has joined Canidae! Now, instead of it just being me doing all the work, Aleria will be doing the base colouring in the novel! Also, she may be designing some of the background characters, such as dogs and random wolves. I'm really excited about this, because not only do I trust Aleria with my life, she's like my sister and I always enjoy working with her. I've actually been trying to get her into this project since I decided to make it a novel, so I'm super happy! Expect to see some stuff from her on here soon!

Today's News
Well, I've got some products at the store now (link is directly above) including a whole bunch of clothes and various other regalia. You can even get a print of Tailchaser's character sheet, but I really only put that up because I didn't have any prints in the shop yet. Currently most things just have the logo on them, but actual prints are coming soon.

I added some pages, because this place was looking FAR too cluttered. Now you can click links to learn about stuff! Eventually I want to have like dog breed pages sort of, which tell things about various breeds and whatnot that'll be featured in the story. These include the siberian husky, malamute, jack russel terrier, border collie, norwegian elkhound, scottish deerhound and more! I also want to someday have a section on wildlife as well, which would include everything from hoary marmots (gotta love 'em!) to boars, ravens, caribou and (of course) the star species of this story - wolves. I absolutely love the fact that I'm not just focusing on just wolves in this story, like a lot of graphic novels do (focus on one species I mean ) because I like broader spectrums to stories. EVERYTHING. I want to have it all in the story. I want to create a believable landscape of species for the novel.

-All characters must be correct in pelt colour/anatomy to at least 80% of breed/species standard. ABSOLUTELY NO UNNATURAL COLOURS/HAIR.
-Research is done on each species for knowledge of mannerism/society. Characters must act properly.
-Use of tail, ears and hackles in expression essential. Fur gets spiky when angry.
-Landscapes/buildings must look within 70% of realism.
-General drawing style is sort of 'rounded/angular.'
-Wolf characters are very shaggy/lanky, with long legs and large paws. Spiky hackles. Eyes can only be gold, amber or silver.
-North dogs (siberian huskies) are slim & sleek, with long legs and smaller paws. Refined muzzles.
-Draft dogs (malamutes) are very fluffy looking, with boxy bodies, curly fluffy tails and fair sized paws. Boxy muzzles on males.

What, you expected this to be some happy-joy-joy story? No way; as my friends know, I'm often a rather dark story teller and I tend to heavily use sub plots. So you can expect CANIDAE to involve a lot of hardship for the main characters, whether they're just on the sidelines or it's actually happening to them. It'll also be fairly complicated, as not only must it tell Tailchaser's story, but Red's, Sol's, Stardash's and Frosttip's as well. CANIDAE is the tale of not just a few creatures trying to survive, but of two countries, each of which have their own ideas about what will happen, which will effect the lives of the main characters. The shape-shifter people of Spiriki versus the dog speaker nation of Florne - who'll win? Who'll survive? The fate of a land will depend on Tailchaser, but first she must pay attention to her own problems....

Today's News
I now own a cafepress store at [link]
Coming soon will be a Canidae version of the store, once I have some prints to use. My idea is to make a Canidae poster such as what I have for Ashes of Hope at my Rimarian cafepress. My notion for the prints of the Canidae shop are various characters doing things, like running and howling. In the background will be single word, such as 'Hike,' 'Sing' and 'Run.' Sporty stuff that people who don't even know what Canidae is will like. I'm currently thinking of the following ideas for it:

RUN - Tailchaser (because she likes to run)
HIKE - Sol wearing harness (because that's the sled dog word for go!)
SING - Stardash howling (because she's so pretty )
SLEEP - Sugar taking a well earned snooze
JUMP - Red doing that crazy fox pounce

It may take me quite a while to get a good enough idea for the poster. Anyway, what do you guys think of the ideas? The lettering would be in pretty, bright colours.

CANIDAE DESIGN NOTES
-All characters must be correct in pelt colour/anatomy to at least 80% of breed/species standard. ABSOLUTELY NO UNNATURAL COLOURS/HAIR.
-Research is done on each species for knowledge of mannerism/society. Characters must act properly.
-Use of tail, ears and hackles in expression essential. Fur gets spiky when angry.
-Landscapes/buildings must look within 70% of realism.
-Wolf characters are very shaggy/lanky, with long legs and large paws. Spiky hackles. Eyes can only be gold, amber or silver.
-North dogs (siberian huskies) are slim & sleek, with long legs and smaller paws. Refined muzzles.
-Draft dogs (malamutes) are very fluffy looking, with boxy bodies, curly fluffy tails and fair sized paws. Boxy muzzles on males.
