I always thought I was going to be the one to hang on the last when this site went bad.
But now it's just plain gone BAD. I mean, it's greener and beefier than ever (I think it's turning into the Hulk), they haven't really added anything useful except getting the devwatch to actually refresh itself, and it takes ages to load. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but every page automatically refreshes every five seconds or so. That's excessive if nothing else, and wastes what little processing power my computer has left.

All of that I could put up with if not for the popup ads. Yes, dA actually has popups now. At least, there was no other site they could have come from; dA is the only thing I have up in this browser.

So I quit. I'm not really going to do much anymore. Really, I quit ages ago. So I guess I'll still look at people's work and comment occasionally, and maybe do something sporadically as I see fit, but this site has gotten too pretentious for its own good.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

The thing's been going for two days straight, day and night, and there's not a single other cricket around. Or a lightning bug, for that matter. There just aren't any bugs.

Let me rephrase that. There aren't any bugs that I actually like. There are all sorts of little bugs that like to pretend they're dust motes. The walkway behind the pharmacy I work has become a gauntlet of wasps. And some sort of beetle bit my mother's bellybutton.

And aside from that, nothing. No moths. No fireflies. A few spiders, but they were all inside. And one cricket.

I don't know what he thinks he's accomplishing. At least I know the temperature.

...Maybe that's it! It was all nice and vernal, 65 or so, and then BAM ninety degrees well hello. I think either they all got fried or they got so confused they said, "wake me when the weather starts making sense again." Like the kid who winds up walking onstage, alone, when it's supposed to be the full cast. What do you do?

I just realized I'm a lot funnier when I just splurt stuff out of my head onto the keyboard without thinking about it too hard.

G'night.

1. I'm looking back at 2007 as the year of ______.
2. I'm creating a character progression. That'll be up sometime around midnight.
3. I AM ARTISTIC. Anyone who wants an art trade/fanart/comission, I'll gladly do it. Esp. female characters, for some reason. They're just easier to draw right now.

So item 1. 2007 was the year of stuff happening to me without major input on my part. I got accepted into college and got my first paying job. And a learner's permit. All three things were practically dumped in my lap with barely a lifted finger. I still have no idea how. I lead a charmed life.

Item 2 will be a character progression of Carol, since I took the character from nothing to having an entire TV show planned around her in the span of about a year. (Yeah. I never really told you guys the details on that, other than Sylvaeus' appearance.)

Item 3. Anyone? Anyone?

SO HERE'S WHAT THE NEW FOLDERS ARE.
Nobeard nicely organizes all of the Nobeard comics, in order.
Serious work is stuff I put a lot of effort into making look good. This is for what I'd really consider "art."
Not-so-serious work is good for a laugh. Check it out.
Characters contains most, if not all, of the characters I've ever created, designed, or drawn for somebody else. This was mainly for making life easier on the other DRR teams.

That's what my calendar says.

Not that I hate my country or anything, but "Patriot Day" elicits about the same joyous response to the U.S. of A. as "freedom fries" did.

Does anybody remember freedom fries? They were just french fries, but we were so completely patriotic that when France didn't buy in to our little war, we did everything we could to disown them.

And anyway, all the flag-waving didn't really show up 'til the next day, once the nation had recovered its breath. On 9/11, the only patriots (not heroes, patriots) were the hijackers themselves, mindlessly giving up their lives for their leader, who we're pretty certain was Osama.

Ah, but the media agree with me. This day shall always be known as 9/11, just as Independence Day has given way for the more popular and more nondescript Fourth of July. In fact, the only people who still call it Independence Day are those who watched/wrote that sci-fi film.

So yes, happy reverent patriotic Patriot Day, everybody?

And I observe that dA has COMPLETELY changed their database layout. Just look at any deviation. It used to be that the pages were all on the main server, generated by some php in the /deviation/ folder, eg. .../deviation/20395309/ or something like that. Now they're all on the subdomains' separate servers. And as far as I can tell, they're no longer completely random. Yes, there still is that number at the end, but the URL now gives the name of the deviation and the deviant. You almost don't need that little tooltip when browsing!

Okay, Bunto wondered how in the world he had anything to do with the creation of Nobeard, let alone singlehanded.
Here's the story.

Waaay back, when I first joined dA, my art style was transient to say the least. Every deviation looked like it was drawn by a completely different person. Sometimes, if I walked away in the middle of something, it would change mid-drawing. I kinda liked it, but it got in the way sometimes.

Then one day, after discovering I'd created nine or ten characters that I never really did anything with, I decided to run a poll asking which character you liked best. I left the last one "other, please explain" in case I'd missed one.

The results were...well, really, I can't remember. In fact, I don't think I had more than three votes, and all for different characters. One of them was in the "other" category, and scrolling down to see who it was, I discovered this comment from Gregly: "Draw Nobeard teh Pirate."

So I sat there going, "oookay, who is Nobeard" for a while. Then I remembered a year earlier, in Titanic practice, an idea I'd had that never got off the drawing board. It was for a mock-up really bad commercial for some useless utensil called a shoe cutter, with an orange flipper thrown in if you call now. The skit began with the last three seconds of a similarly spoofy anime going on commercial break. It was just some random pirate reaching for a jewel swinging over a pit of fire, nothing more. We named him Nobeard. I then promptly forgot about the whole thing after deciding it was too stupid.

So, back to the first flashback. That day was a boring Saturday, and having nothing better to do, I drew Nobeard, just to bring back the good times. I posted the pencil sketch here: [link]

AND HERE IS WHERE BUNTO COMES IN. He commented thusly: [link]

Reading that, I felt challenged to keep doing stuff. First, I needed a color key, so I colored that picture and uploaded it too. That got a whole lot more critique, and at the time, I saw that as the most wonderful thing that could ever happen to me.

And then I did the first comic the next day. Wheeeeee.

Story over.

PS. Yeah, I know. At some point, I switched the colors on his shirt. It wasn't on purpose. If you must know, it was in the comic called "Bloof."

Hi all, just giving a major update on the progress of 's request/trade song thing.

The electric uke is done. I'm going to go pick it up once the store opens (Monday). This'll be great.

I found a bassist. He, too, knows and loves Commander Keen.

The drums. First, I decided to go with a drum machine, because there really isn't room for a drum kit in my living room. That and I wanted a good, solid beat. Well, I found one, and it sounded okay. I recorded the drums, and...gah. For some reason, when trying to play and record off the stereo mix at the same time, it pegged the CPU. As a result, a couple of buffer underflow errors occured. Then, as opposed to coming in in the middle of the beat, or even skipping it altogether, the stupid program just played the notes whenever it felt like it. THE DRUMS SOUNDED LIKE THEY WERE PLAYED BY AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD.
So I started over with a muchmuchmuch better program that could actually export the sound in stereo. Located 138 drum samples, narrowed that down to about 24, and put them in.

It sounds great.

I'm also ditching Sound Recorder in favor of Audacity, one of the best sound-editing programs I've ever seen. Therefore, say goodbye to mono recordings done in one take. Hello, CD quality stereo!

Bunto, dude, that fanart you're doing to pay for this had better be worth it.

Also, I'm having a thought here. If I were to ever make a career out of this (or at least a freelance job) then I might want to go back and ask some nominal fee from these first few people, say $5. I'm not going to ask anything of Proliator605, since that wasn't a request.

Well, it's official.
I was looking at the first comic when I realized that there's an inconsistency. Somewhere along the line, the stripes on Nobeard's shirt reversed themselves. But to tell the truth, I don't care. What's done is done. I'm not changing now.

Back to the topic at hand: [link]
HOORAY!
Eventually, I'll catch up, and then I'll do simultaneous updates on both here and there.

I'm wondering. Only my relatively new or infrequent visitors ever respond to my comics. Is it just that you've come to expect these comics from me, and go, "Oh, another comic. Whatever." Or are my watchers slowly losing interest?

For the first time in my life, I actually found myself doing something with the little strands of stuff coming out of my face. Seems my moustache was infringing on the corners of my mouth. So, discovering a nifty little trimming tool (not a razor, I don't know what it's called) intended for such purposes, I neatly showed that dark smudge who's boss. My unibrow is gone, too. I actually look like a person now. (I'll be updating my ID shortly.)

It should also be noted that I have been wearing John Lennon shades around the house. Just trying something new, getting me in the right state of mind to be working on stuff.

Also, no word yet on the uke. It should be done any day now. AND I HAVE THE MONEYS. THANK YOU GIANT SNOWDRIFTS.

Oh, and ~Bunto, I'm working on your song. Since you requested it, rather than me offering it, I'll be expecting something in return. That can be anywhere from a nice little piece of fanart to a one-month subscription. I'm going all-out on this song, adding a drumline and so on.

Okay, so I'll admit that the hovercar project was not entirely what I was devoting my life to for the past couple weeks. Not midterms, either, although that was a signifigant chunk of it. No, the major snag in the Nobeard updates was...well.

I was sitting in my room and happened to look up at Teh Amulet (which was hanging on my wall above my desk) when I realized that I hadn't given even a passing thought to why Nobeard would be after such a treasure, nor what powers the stupid trinket posessed.

So I rapidly put my plan into action: I would do some trivial activity as an excuse for not furthering the storyline. I would, during the entire course of the project, try to resolve such a crucial point in the plot.

But thankfully, I came up with something before I finished the animatic, so that's why it's incomplete. I might return to it sometime in the future, when I have another problem....
Why did I buy it? Why did I buy some tacky jewel? Not just because I wanted it. I feel that such a thing could come in handy someday...

I'll let you figure out what that purpose is. (Got it all planned out.)

It's the only way. The theme of this contest: OUTFITS.
Come up with the most random outfit you can and draw a picture of it or take a photo of you in it.
There are some rules, though.
1. You can only draw/wear stuff that you find in your own house.
2. These things must be clothes. This rule can be stretched slightly.
3. It isn't random if it's an entire outfit (for instance, a football player wearing a tutu, tights, and ballet slippers would not be random.)
4. You have to name all the items in the outfit.
This contest will end randomly when I feel like it.
Winner will be randomly selected.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Not funny.
So Gregly got my 1000th pageview, whee. Knew it was coming.
Mainly, this journal is hiding my previous one. If you came here because of the Nobeard fiasco, don't bother, it was a mistake. If you came here to celebrate my milestone number of pageviews, then I really, really would like some fanart. I don't mind fanart, really. In fact, I think I'll be so nice as to say anybody who draws fanart for me will get an automatic and quite possibly some unannounced fanart in return, assuming you have an original character.
By the way, if you wish to draw fanart of me in particular, I'd prefer using the long-haired, grey-shirt wearing version, rather than the old cartoony one. I just think it looked weird when not in sprite form, and it wasn't entirely original.
Uhhhh yeah. I guess this journal really had no other purpose than trying to cheer myself up. I'm still once burned, twice shy about the stuff that happened on the 26th. So it would help if you could help me out here, too.

Well, Gregly just pointed out to me that I am not the only one who has done stuff involving a character called "Nobeard." Here is a rundown of names of people who each have done something with such a charater:

Now, my solution to all of these is to allow the current work they have done exist, but to leave off creating more stuff involving their characters. I may make exceptions, though. That's why this journal entry will stay here until I work stuff out individually with every person mentioned here.

EDIT AND APOLOGY
Yeah, sorry if I've offended anyone, ruined someone's day, or other bad outcomes. I overreacted, and I'm regretting that. No personal punishments/lawsuits will come of this (in case that wasn't clear) and I really don't care anymore. Special thanks to Master-Pirate for pointing out how common this name really is. You can all go back to your regularly scheduled programs.
Does...does anybody know the name of a good PR person, just so this kind of thing never happens again?

--

It is currently in the process of being glued.
Before I did that, however, I discovered that it was still possible for me to play a "C" chord. So I recorded it, in case those were its last words. (See, I'm not entirely sure it will sound quite the same after the fingerboard is put back on.)

Update: it works!!
Granted, there's still some glue sticking out in places, and the fingerboard feels a smidge closer to the strings, it still has that wonky tone to it. I'll be happier now. I'm still saving up for that new one, though. I'd rather not take Hilo out in public.

--
--

I feel kind of sad. Today, just minutes ago, my ukulele died. This would be the same ukulele I've had since I was four.

When I was four, my new sister was on the way, and I suppose my parents thought I was being replaced or something. So they thought of the best parenting trick ever. "Gabe, what would you like the new baby to bring you?" I guess they were expecting something like "a truck" or "candy" or even "a trip to [insert fun place here]." Nooooo.

"I want a purple guitar just my size with stars and moons on it in a rectangular case that's purple with stars and moons on it." I was one specific four-year-old. I got more specific each time they asked. Eventually, they stopped asking.

Well, the baby was due any day, and my parents went into panic mode. So they went to the local music store, and lo and behold, there was a maroon uke in a cardboard case. Close enough to purple to say so. And then they went to a fabric store. Right. On. Top. Of the remnants pile. Was a piece of cloth, same color as the uke, with golden astrological stars, moons, and suns upon it. And there was just enough to line the case. (I think the upholstery is the only reason the case is still intact.) Add a sheet of gold star stickers from Holcomb's, and it was ready.

Delivery day came, and there was the baby, and there was my "guitar." I loved my sister already.

Some such years later, today, I was playing "We'll Meet Again" when the fingerboard (which had been coming unglued for at least three years) fell out. It just fell out. Right in the middle of the song. Good thing I wasn't playing in public.

Well, there have been some other problems with the thing, so I've been saving up for a new uke. I won't be sad to see the old one go, though. I'm still keeping it. I might someday be able to get it fixed. I guess, now that it's temporarily out of commission, I'll name it. I'll give it the name that's been printed on it since it was made. No, not Taiwan. Its name is now Hilo. Hilo 2651.

So this means that I won't be renewing my subscription. But I will once I get my new uke. And I'll still be uploading.

--
