The basis of this contest is devilishly simple. I want you to submit, 12 pieces of written work. Sounds easy enough, but as with everything in life there are some fairly strict guidelines I need you to adhere to.

These 12 pieces may be old, or written new for the contest, it doesn't matter.
The 12 pieces must have a fairly even split of poetry to prose (and also include at least one piece of non fiction). For help on what constitutes 'non fiction' or just to help expand your repertoire then have a look at Lovetodeviate's resource central. [link]
The key to this contest is variety I do not want to read 6 poems about your cat and 6 pieces of prose about your boyfriend. That is not interesting.
Please give them original titles eg titles that relate to the piece and not 'Literati Contest Entry 9' or something like that.
The 12 pieces do not have to be themed around The 12 Days of Christmas (that was just an amusing theme) in fact, I'd prefer if it wasn't, this is about your overall talent, rather than conforming to some bizarre theme.

Does that seem simple enough? If I have omitted a glaringly obvious point, feel free to ask, I am still a little doped up, not quite my super sharp self.

How to Enter

Post all 12 pieces up on dA, either as a deviation or a scrap, I don't mind.
Make a list of 12 links in a note and send it to me. This is where you decide the order of the pieces.
I will try and find some clever way of displaying the entries.
Please only use polished and "perfect" pieces - by that I mean work that you think is the best it can be.
<img src="http://...

Please remember that if any of you cannot make it then feel free to jot down your thoughts and not them to me.

I hope you all enjoyed reading (or re-reading) the book as much as I did and some by the end of the weekend I should have selected another book for us all to read.

</edit>

----------

Gah I suck supremely. I wasn't online for a day or two and I absolutely forgot about the meeting. That and I received a number of emails from people who would like a little more time, therefore in my infinite love I have decided to allow you all an extension.

The official book club discussion will be Saturday 16th of August at 10pm GMT. Remember it is not vital for you to be there, if you can't make it, just note me with some of your ideas on the book for me to add to the piece I am working on for it.

Remember also that the discussion will be for people who have finished the book, so I shall put one massive spoiler alert around the entire chat room for the duration ^_^ anyway, sorry to have cocked this up to some extent. I realise I have been a bit neglectful lately.

This has been brought to me attention by =DKegerreis and it may well come in useful for those of you unable to get hold of a hard copy of the book club book. The Picture of Dorian Gray ebook I have not tried it out but it seems to be the full book. So have a go if you like ^_^

----------

This is my proposal for the small number of you who agree with my theory that 'in order to be a good writer, one must first be a good reader' ...

The Literati Book Club

The concept behind this is very simple...

1) I will give you the title of a book.
2) There will be a certain amount of time set for you to locate the book and finish it, (the time will depend on the length and "difficulty" of the book.)
3) On a set date we can all meet up on the -Literati Lair- dAmn chatroom and talk about the book.
4) You can also give me any feedback about the book, mini reviews, first impressions and so on and I can post them in a separate journal, or even make a news article.

I have a good idea of what the first book may be, however I would like to know who will be partaking in this activity. Basically if you intend to then please send me a note with Book Club in the title, expressing your interest.

I hope this is clear to you all. I am not expecting a vast number of people to sign up, but even if it is only one or two of you, and even if you have already read the book it would be a fab chance to get some good literature down yourself ^_^

Thanks.
xxx/.

BOOK CLUB MEMBERS

<a href="http://warrenisinsane.deviantart....

My attention span is too short to write prose much, so I usually do poetry, but I'm a huge fan of Vonnegut. And e.e. cummings. I'm into all forms of theatre and music, as well.

- U N K N O W N - KARINA;;; I'm a teen with little experience in my writing. Yet, it's my medicine and my addiction. I spend time evaluating and studying literature, and am hoping to become an author not incredibly far down my road. I never back down from critics, and always have room for advice. Pleased to meet you.

- USTULO - I'm 20, and a history student from the UK. I'm a book worm and social butterfly, who thought the two were compatible eh? I'm pretty much a normal student which means I drink, I sleep, I party, I steal the tax payers money, I terrorise the local community and I occasionally do some work. I like to write to escape really or to try and capture the beautiful images that sometimes fill my head.

V

- VERTIGO ART - Name: W.S.
Age: 29
Gender: Male

I have been writing since I was old enough to hold a pen. I had a children's book published at nine years old and never stopped. I have not been as lucky with the publishing aspect but writing is still an outlet - an outlet that has grown as I have. It never questions, judges, or attempts to trap in me in the reality that I strive to escape from.

I write mostly free-form poetry and broken prose.

- VIC RATTLE HEAD 56 - I play bass for a hardcore band and I also write the lyrics, thats why I started my deviant art page. I write lyrics mostly... sometimes love poems... anyway the lyrics I write are inspired by my own experience and the experience of other. I try to make my lyrics deep because I am fascinated by the human psyche and I want to challenge it and make the reader think.

- VIVA LA MONICA - My name is Monica and I'm a writer. My period of writing is taking roots from my very young age.I write because there is nothing in this world that I can imagine to do instead of it.I still haven't published my work on deviant art but I think that with time this will come in option too.I was on several writing contest in my home country Croatia, and yes,I have won several awards. My personal favorite is award Slava Raškaj for young talented poets. No,I haven't published book of poems or novel because I think that I have enough time to improve myself as a writer. My writing skills are still like a young green branch.Anais Nin is my idol.Everything what she wrote is showing me why I am writing too.Of course that she is not the only one who I'm reading. There is also Gabriel Garcia Marquez,Robert Wilson,Nora Roberts,Ernest Hemingway,Dostojevski etc..Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov is my headline book since I've started with reading. In my hands you will mostly see Russian literature.

- VOTE LAWRENCE - Oh hello there!

I didn't hear you come in. but please take a seat, care for a splash of brandy? My name's Marie, and I'm one of the millions of dA addicts around here. I write fiction, primarily fantasy, but I've written everything from trashy romance to technical science fiction, with occasional horrible poems thrown in. My first novel started about five years ago in high school, and I've been writing whatever pops into my head ever since. I'd love to be a writer (professionally) if I actually thought I'd make money doing it. Sadly, since I can't claim more than a handful of completed stories... I rather doubt it. I live to imagine, fantasize, and dream, which leaves me with less reality than most, but I'm not complaining.

- POET OF FIRE - A writer who enjoys writing poetry and posting it on DeviantART, while working on large prose projects that she does not post. However, I do give the ordinary a chance especially when it comes to writing. And it's really hard to describe myself.. I've always loved reading and writing and I'm hoping to learn a lot from critiques and talking to others on here. I'm usually into the darker fantasy/sci-fi kind of stories, and very rarely into nonfiction, and I'll admit that it's a bad thing, but I just can't get into it as easily. I also can't stand stories that have no sense of humor what-so-ever. It doesn't even have to be my kind of humor, just as long as it has a bit in it, I'm usually pretty content.

- KIRAI MEIUN - I mostly write about my OCs and a few things I did as a school assignment. My addiction to writing began when I was 8 and we were asked to write a story involving dinosaurs and a key. Mine was about 4 pages, everyone elses was like 1. I got an award fromt he principal for it! XD And I still have it. I write poetry and prose I stick to fantasy, its what i love to read so its what I love to write. I'm often called Oliver (Twist) for my extremely short haircut. The feared outcast "metalhead-punk weirdo" of my school. I'm in a science high school merged with a normal one, 2nd grade.
I have wandering-outside-the-normal views, a LaVeyan Satanist (no, I don't bite) and a anarcho-communist. I do-enjoy-want-to-have-as-a-occupation almost everything from science to art and from there, philosophy.
In literature, I usually prefer writing poetry over prose and darker themes over lighter. I live in the beautiful country of New Zealand. I've only just started seriously writing and thus I need a lot of help. But I enjoy it immensely. I write both poetry and prose (and philosophy, if that counts). I love to read fiction of a Transgressive nature, particularly anything with philosophical overtones. Anything that really challenges me to think or feel in a way I hadn't previously. I'm on here to improve my writing skills and explore the work of so many talented writers and poets.

- FEARWEN - Hi! Trying to write something useful or find an interesting way to present my ideas. Interested in both poetry and prose. Loves philosophy. I get my inspiration from my life, turning my experiences into my characters' experiences. I also get my inspiration from-and this may sound corny, but it was a friend of mine's idea to start it anyway-my muse, Kisten. He's actually, erm, a character in a book that I really like. I'm not a crazed fan who sleeps with the book under her pillow or anything, though, I promise! My socks? They're white. Sorry, I'm fairly boring. I guess, one thing I can say thats interesting about myself is that I act. I'm on The Unit on CBS, but what I'd really like to do is be a veterinarian. Never too busy to offer a helping hand to a fellow Literati in need, or to share advice on the dreaded writers block - be you a writer of poetry or prose.

----------
0-9

- 7 OUTER ELEMENTS - Greetings. I'm a recreational writer, occasional college student, and full time slacker. I go by many nicknames, all of them, I assure you, other people's ideas, so you can call me what you want. If you'd rather use my more common names, you can call me Outer, Seven (7 if you're really lazy), Sev, or, if you're boring, you can call me by my given name: Steven.

I'm one of those writers that rarely finishes anything, no matter how entranced I am with an idea. Instead, I binge write as ideas take up residence in me, and hope that I finish before the drive leaves me. If I was to make one of those pixel IDs that are running around, I'd rank high on speed and special, low on stamina and attack.

I read voraciously, and have been doing so for as long as I can remember. Non-fiction bores me, in reading and in writing, so fantasy and science fiction are my subjects of preference, especially novels that deal with topics of philosophy or psychology.

I have written much more than I have posted on dA. A lack of confidence and lazy attitude keep me from posting a lot of what I write - even the works I have up, I sometimes want to take down. Especially my weak stabs at poetry, a phase I'm embarrassed to recall. My strength is in prose, and in thinking up nifty ideas for others.

A

- ADMANTINA - I'm Admantina and although I've been at deviantart for a few years, I've only started posting my writing recently. I'm still very much an amateur, but I hope that with more critique I can become truly great. Ambitious, but hey, I can dream right?

- A DORK ABLE - I am a compulsive writer who is attending college with the intent to triple-major in philosophy, linguistics, and perhaps German. I have been writing (mostly poe-try) for as long as my memory serves me. I have been an active member and the Editor of the literary club on my college campus, The Writers' Guild.

- AESTHETIC PARADISE - I'm a music addict, which is generally what inspires me to write (lyrics, poems, stories, the whole nine wonders, you know?). Ah, very much scatterbrained: sometimes I need to try harder to make sense. I want to have a pet penguin... but I think I'll stick to stuffed ones until there comes a day when I won't have environmentalist/crazy wackos after me about it. Currently, I'm trying to figure out how to write about eyes, but haven't been overly inspired to write squat about them. Still thinking. Perhaps I should go get coffee to feed my brain...

- AESTHETIC SINS - I'm a writer, a photographer, and a...Photoshopper? I have chosen to ignore it and have it fixed so I am now able to spend longer on here and go over some things that people have been asking me about. Call this a Club Update if you want.

1) - The Interview

Bless our efforts, a mixture of weird times, computer troubles and mother nature has prevented Fate and I from making sufficient contact over the past week or so. We are working on it, keep getting your questions to her and a final date shall be released over the next day or so. Once both are completed I shall upload the transcripts from BOTH interviews.

2) - The Add-a-Section Story

As far as I know it has not been eaten by ~weakandweary She promised it me last Saturday and I have all faith that she will deliver. There are only two more people to go including her, and then after that I shall proof it, maybe make a few little minor changes to improve the flow, general editing - and then it will go up in the gallery. And once it is there it will be like the club ID you can fave it and comment etc, since it won't be posted anywhere else ^_^

3) - A Book Club

This was an idea I was toying with about the time of the Summer Contest and the interview, the people I spoke to about it seemed enthusiastic. And I just want to know it the rest of you guys would be interested? It would probably consist of 1 or 2 months to get the book and read it, then come on the dAmn to talk about it, and maybe send me your thoughts on the book. This would be entirely voluntary and even if only one or two people want to take part then that is fine, I shall still go ahead with it.

4) Critiquing

I know this club is more focused on the creation of pieces than the critiquing and polishing of them afterwards. And I was considering making a journal entry where every member could post ONE piece to be seen by all the Literati, do you think that is a good idea or a bad idea? I am very keen on the idea of everyone commenting on everyone else's work. I comment as much as I can, but you have to understand that I can get up to 70 to 80 literature pieces a day in my watch box and I can't read them all, let alone critique them all. (That is why a catchy title is always important). So yes, your views on that please?

5) The Grand Summer Contest

At last count there were 17 entries to the contest and rising. I am terribly pleased with how well it is all doing. The pieces that are coming in are on an exceptionally high standard. But I notice, especially in the polls comments, that many people are stating how impossible it is for them to win. I would like to heartily refute this claim. I didn't read one entry that I thought, "well that's it! they might as well just not send in any more this person will win everything" - so EVERYONE has a chance.

I feel, while I am on my soapbox, I should quote ~Leo-Garth who commented on the poll, I also want to change the opinions of a few people who say they will never be able to win this contest. I want to say, although some of these entries are slightly better than others, you ALL have a pretty huge chance of winning, so get your self-esteem back up or bad luck will infect your deviations! SO listen to this lovely individual and have faith and confidence in yourself. </sermon>

The Literati Grand Summer Contest
Also don't forget to check out THE LITERATI GRAND SUMMER CONTEST - if you don't enter we will steal all the shampoo in your world and dump it in your car!

The Daily Prompts
PROMPTS - NOT A CONTEST!

<a href="http:...

This means we shall have two interviews, but this is good because then we can compare the two methods. ^_^

I hope the questions won't double up too much. I know it is short notice but if you happen to be in the dAmn between 10 and 11pm GMT on the 30th then see you there.

The BIG difference between this interview and the last one will be that only Fate may ask the questions, if you have one send it to her to ask. She has worked out an order or flow of her questions and it wouldn't be fair for them to come from all over.

So sorry, if you ask a question when the interview is in progress, I will ignore you

Sorry for all the faff and confusion. I will post both transcripts of the interiews so then everyone can see what happened at both.

----------

RIGHT! It seems there has been confusion en masse about GMT. So, to clarify. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time or the time in London, where I live.

It is very simple. If you do not understand the time difference then go HERE and find your nearest city. Then find London. The difference between these times will be self evident.

OR//.

If you want, you can sit there refreshing that page until 10pm tomorrow night swings round London time, either way is fine with me

still unclear?

----------

How is Saturday 14th June 10pm GMT for you guys? You honestly don't have to attend. I shall post a transcript in the journal. All we need is more questions before then, so ~IrrevocableFate can sort through an ask questions as best as she can.

^_^ for more information read below...
----------

It may have escaped the notice of some of you, but The Literati is the proud owner of it's own dAmn chatroom - LOCATED HERE - therefore I, and some of my wonderful Literati, have been clonking our heads together to come up with some things we can do with our new toy.

And so I would like to announce the very first Literati interview!

Before you get super excited about the grand name we booked to share the sublime secrets of their success, the first interviewee is going to be ME (I know I know, how thrilling!)

Some people have told me that as the leader of The Literati I can be a tad mysterious. Therefore this is a rare chance for to ask me absolutely anything. What I want you to do is post any questions you can think would be either interesting, informative or amusing to ask me, as a comment in this journal.

The interview will be presided over by ~IrrevocableFate and I shall set a concrete date and time after I see the response we get with questions.

That is all, I hope that once we have a suitable format for questioning set up then I can go and stalk someone more interesting than me to be interviewed.

Contest
Don't forget to check out THE LITERATI GRAND SUMMER CONTEST - if you don't enter we shall break into your house and harvest your kidneys...

Regular Prompts
PROMPTS - NOT A CONTEST!

DON'T FORGET, ALL THE PROMPT...

My tribute to the three winners of the first challenge. Please do take the time to check them out - that way, when it's your turn people might what to check your work out too...

ALMALOBANA -

Writer of consistently fantastic work. Having read through almost everything. I would name my favourite piece as, "This Lie"

----------

FRANCINE1991 -

The Queen of the rhyming couplets, her work is clever, different and amusing (she wrote a sonnet to a highlighter ffs ^_^!)

Her gallery may not be as... full as others, but it still hoards these little treasures tucked away that you just have to find.

However overall, my personal favourite has to be...

After a long hiatus from the public view we have conjured up a few new tips for you to graze over to help beat your writers block!

However, do not forget that there are daily prompts up if your preferred method is to simply 'write off' the writers block ^_^

TIP 4 - MEDITATION:

[A tip from Warhaven]

Although it might seem a little "out there" Meditation is also good for curing writer's block, and sometimes does the equivalent of dropping a nuke on it!

This is because the mind is a muscle, just as surely as any physical one in your body, and Meditation is the way by which you exercise it. Exercise it, and it will grow stronger, learn your own mind, and you will have more creativity than before. This doesn't require any outlandish poses or strange mantras, though they are helpful for the serious meditator, simply sitting comfortably concentrating on, but not directing, your own thoughts is a great beginning at meditation.

Hand in hand with this, EXERCISE! The brain IS a physical muscle, and it requires oxygen too! Blood can't flow through fat and so takes longer to reach the brain. Train your body, and it will pump blood better, allowing your brain to work faster, which in turn allows your mind to work better, giving more when normally a block would occur! This doesn't mean get a membership to a gym or buy big bulky equipment, simple push-ups, sit-ups, and walking will solve this nicely and get the blood pumping.

Sometimes though, a block really is a block, a tangled mess of ideas that need straightening out. Sometimes just writing out everything in your mind somewhere separate will fix the block, and you might even find new ideas to explore later.

----------

TIP 3 - BOOKS TO HELP:

[This is a tip from mode-de-vie]

Some great books to help with writer's block:

The Writers Book of Matches: This is a great book of prompts, most of which are one or two lines, that can help "ignite your fiction."

The Writers Block: Literally, a small block of prompts, including things about authors, and other tips for writing. There's also another one similar to it called The Creative Block.

One I just picked up at the store this past weekend! The Pocket Muse: Ideas & Inspirations for Writing: Has great tips for improving your writing, plus tricks and prompts/exercises to get you started. There's also another book with practically the same title; it just looks a tad bit different.

[I fully recommend The Writer's Block I use it all the time when I am writing, and occasionally I use the prompts from there in the "Regular Prompts" section. ^_^]

----------

TIP 2 - KEEP A NOTEBOOK:

It is a truth universally acknowledged that when one has a flash of fantastic inspiration it will fade very quickly. So if you are someone who seems to always get the idea for an amazing name or the perfect opening line on the bus, or out for a walk, at the supermarket or on the moon, remember this very important tip...

NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR NOTEBOOK. Since as long as I can remember, I have kept a notebook, whether it's a little plastic spiral bound notebook, or one of those beautiful black -Moleskine- notebooks that I seriously want (not a hint or anything) - it doesn't matter, just make that little book a part of you , you have no idea how invaluable it will become.

The great author F. Scott Fitzgerald would obsess about his notebooks, often keeping different books for ideas for titles, overheard conversations, names, even lyrics and tunes. You don't have to go that far, but go on, get a notebook and never lose another great thought again.

----------

TIP 1 - TIPS FOR QUICK RELIEF OF WRITERS BLOCK:

These are just basic ideas to try if you have a few minutes spare and a crippling case of THE BLOCK!

* If you are having trouble with whatever you are writing, the classic tip is to move on and write something for a little while and then you will return to the original piece with a fresh head and a clear mind. Simple but effective.

* A great tip for writers block is to change your location. No, we don't mean go to Paris, or even leave the room if you don't want to. Just sit somewhere you don't normally sit. It may be as mundane as moving from the head of the bed to the foot of the bed, or as far out as perching on the lawnmower in the garden shed.

* Change your instrument. If you have been word processing, print off the most current page and continue by hand. If you normally write in pencil, try biro and if you normally hand write your work in the finest calligraphy, you may need help.

* Expose yourself...
