I remember doing an illustration years ago (back when I was in graphic art program).
I t was based on an article in magazine (that I don't remember) about the Corbis digital gallery (owned by Microsoft)
witch had digital right on classic art piece (say Vincent Van Gogh for exemple) I'm not sure if it still the case (about owning the right) but I was discusted about it (comming from Bill Gates it's not realy suprising).
I'll poste the art piece...if I can find it...

I think of art as relflection of a culture (including subculture and alternativ culture) there fore it's identity, sure it's public , but not of public domain. An artist have to pay the rent too...

As it is now the simple fact of adding a c or even posting it on DA grants you copyright and what a legal nightmare it can be whith fan art , including other's work in your work and art thieft)

Other wise if the bill pass only people whit money will be able to get copyrighted, so bad thing for artist...
It will probably even more complex (it can't be your art I've paid the copyright for it).
And who's collecting this money anyway ? And how would that affect other country's copy right laws ?

But it has some interesting ramification to it, what if wee'd pay a one time 5$ to get some kind of electronic water mark (on top of the the regular copy right) that would be incorporated in the file structure for additional protection.

One thing you can do to protect yourself (I'm not 100% sure of this tho), first off doing this just for one drawing is kinda of pointless (unless you think your work is really really really brilliant) do this whit an anthology (say you have created an universe whit character story , written or pictured (or other wise). The put it in an envelope and mail it to your self (mail not email). As long as the envelope remain unopened it's date stamp can used to prove that you created it's content before it was sent. This can be useful if you are doing business whit some one whom you think can violate contract them or what not...

And some how I doubt that the bill will pass, but if it does there is the likely chance that I would close my DA account end remove every thing.

In other news...
My GF will be attending the Quebec book festival (see our web site)

My year in campus Ubisoft is ending , it's been a bumpy ride since after Chrismas but I'm doing better now.
We are working on student made game called Aima I hope it will be playable by the time we are finish, if it's good it may be distributed by steam. There is a good chance that you will see some of the animation i've done when I post my demo reel.
